"This paper presents a Seebeck-type solid state thermoelectric power generator unit, designed to investigate the possible recovery of radiant waste heat at a silicon plant in Norway where roughly 703 of the total input energy leaves the process as waste heat. The unit is 0.5 m x 0.5 m and is built of 36 commercially available thermoelectric devices based on bismuth telluride p - and n - type semiconductors. Thermoelectric devices directly convert fractions of a heat flux into an electric current (and vice versa) and may therefore be convenient for recovery of waste heat when the heat source is discontinuously available. The purpose of the thermoelectric unit is to give a proof of principle of direct thermoelectric energy conversion on a large scale. We present the initial test results for the generator. At an average temperature difference between the heat reservoir and the heat sink of 98°C, we measured an open ciruit potential of 23.44 ± 0.06 V and the matched load power output was 39.4 W. At a temperature difference of 220°C, we predict the generator open circuit potential to be 40.8 V, which corresponds to an efficient Seebeck coefficient of 242 µV /K, and matched load power output to be 120 W.IntroductionThe world's power demand increases, driven by population growth and increase in living standards and simultaneously global warming is recognized as one of our most serious environmental problems. According to the International Energy Agency[l], the industrial sector accounted for approximately one third of the total global power consumption in 2005. Increasing the energy efficiency of industrial processes thus represents a benign and substantial route for addressing environmental concerns and energy security.In accordance with the second law of thermodynamics, all real processes are associated with lost work which is energy being dissipated as heat to the surroundings[2]. Improving the energy efficiency of industrial processes is about finding the process path associated with a minimum of lost work. The more evenly the losses are distributed, the smaller are the losses [3, 4]. In addition, exploiting the unavoidable waste heat will contribute to improve the energy efficiency. The waste heat may be utilized for heating purposes and/or it can be upgraded to work for instance via some sort of heat engine."

INTRODUCTION The Alimak method of raising (Fig. 1) was intro¬duced in 1957. Because of its flexibility, economy, and speed, it soon became the most used system of raising in the world. With the same unit, raises of various areas, inclinations, and lengths can be driven. Air-motor¬-driven raise climbers normally are used in mines with short raises (Fig. 2). For longer raises electric or diesel-¬hydraulic drives are used. The Alimak raise climber is designed entirely in ac¬cordance with the instructions of the Swedish Board of Industrial Safety (Arbetarskyddsstyrelsen). There are good margins of safety concerning the breaking strength of the material and the raise climber comprises safety devices and features that practically eliminate the risks of accidents. The drive gear of air-driven climbers is equipped with an air-operated brake which is automatically activated when air for the motors is shut off. There is a safety device which activates automatically at overspeed and a speed-regulated brake for descent by gravity, by which the raise climber can be taken down to the bottom of the raise in case of cutoff of the air supply. The raise climber climbs along a pin rack welded to a guide rail which also comprises pipes for air and water. The guide. rail can be extended by using 1- or 2-m (3.2¬or 6.4-ft) sections as the driving progresses. Each guide rail section is bolted to the rock wall by special expan¬sion bolts of Alimak design. Men ride up to the face in the cage, traveling com¬fortably and easily while material is transported on the platform. There is no dangerous climbing up ladders. The men are well protected during ascent and arrive in good condition at the face. The greatest advantages of raise climber systems are flexibility and versatility. This paper is a report on the relationships between petrographic composition, chemical composition, physical properties, and thermal behavior of banded bituminous coal. It describes the relationships between petrographic composition, behavior in various laboratory tests, and carbonizing properties of different petrographic types of coal that occur in relatively thick benches in a single bed of high-volatile A bituminous coal - the Hernshaw bed of Boone County, W. Va. Thin-section microscopic analysis and free-swelling index determinations of the thin-section samples were made of a standard column sample. A standard face sample, a representative channel sample, and representative samples of two prominent petrographic benches of bright and dull coal were subjected to chemical analyses and free-swelling-index, plasticity, dilation, agglutinating, low-temperature carbonization, and BM-AGA retort tests. A float-and-sink separation was also made of part of the standard face sample. The fractions from this gravity separation were subjected to petrographic and chemical analysis and free-swelling-index, plasticity, and dilatation tests.

The generation of low cost power is but one phase of the TVA program for regional development. During the 36 years since TVA began, growth in its generation of electric power has necessitated a shift from a predominantly hydroelectric power system to a combination steam and hydroelectric system. The addition of steam-electric power plants to TVA's generating system was necessitated by the rapid increase in the traditional and defense demands for electric power in the 80,000-square-mile area served by TVA, the need to firm up the hydroelectric power, and the fact that all available sites for sizeable hydroelectric projects had been developed. At present TVA owns and operates 40 power plants--29 hydroelectric and 11 steam-electric plants. The total generating capacity of the hydroelectric plants is 3,105,430 kw, and the capacity of the steam plants is 13,951,135 kw. This provides a total generating capacity of 17,056,565 kw for the plants operated by TVA. Individual capacity of the 112 hydroelectric units ranges from 10,000 to 67,500 kw, and the individual capacity of the steam-electric units now in operation ranges from 60,000 to 950,000 kw. In addition to this generating capacity, TVA distributes the power from 6 U. S. Army Corps of Engineers hydroelectric plants on the Cumberland River. These plants contribute an additional 725,000 kw. Also, under an agreement with the Aluminum Company of America, TVA directs the stream flows and generation of their 423,715-kw system on Tennessee River tributaries and shares with Alcoa in the increased generation resulting from this coordinated operation.

Municipal governments recognize the importance of aggregates in the local economy and the need to manage this resource in the interest of the public good. They have encountered problems with regulating the industry and the dichotomy between the urban need and the rural source. They have suffered from a lack of financial benefit, an adequate aggregate inventory, provincial strategy, economic information and public understanding. A provincial strategy for ensuring the availability of aggregate supplies to developing areas of the Province is essential. The Province should also be responsible for licensing, research, technical expertise on rehabilitation, public education and financial assistance. Upper-tier municipalities (regions or counties) should assume responsibility for resource management, including resource availability, demand characteristics, truck routing, phasing of resource development and sequential land-use planning. Area municipalities (towns and townships) can best determine the social and environmental impact of a specific aggregate development proposal and should therefore have the primary responsibility for the location of new pits and quarries. They should also have the authority to supplement provincial regulations concerning operating standards and the phasing and standards of site rehabilitation.

A major initial and ongoing cost component in many mining operations is that of transporting mined materials and processed ore from the point of extraction or processing to the next operation. For various reasons the transport distance can be significant or in some cases the route may be particularly challenging. The trend to higher production rates to gain economy of scale benefits and capitalise on sales opportunities means that optimisation of transport can play a significant part in profitability. Apart from the cost criteria, increasingly there are other criteria such as environmental restraints, land ownership and security of supply that can have a significant impact on determination of the optimum route and transport vehicle. The paper aims to briefly highlight the important selection criteria and the benefits and disadvantages of the most commonly utilised transport vehicles. It then moves on to looking in more depth at belt conveying, highlighting the unique capabilities of the Metso MRC Cable Belt Conveyor system.

Pressure-composition isotherms have been determinedfor the systems ZrMo2 -H2 between 0" and 900°C at hydrogen pressures between 10-4 and 760 Torr. Tkese studies plus X-ray diffraction analyses of selected compositions show that these intermetallic compounds form a complete series of hydrogen solid solutions within this temperature and pressure range. The partial molar enthalpies and entropies of solution of hydrogen in the three intermetallic compounds were calculated. The solubility of hydrogen in these Laves phases can be related to their free electron concentration. ThE reaction of hydrogen with inter metallic compounds of zirconium with Laves phase-type structure has both theoretical and practical interest. The in-termetallic compounds have structures different from any of the pure metals. In addition the electron to atom ratio of the intermetallics varies appreciably. In the nuclear materials field, these materials are of interest since intermetallic compounds may exist as precipitates in commercial zirconium alloys with transition metals. From studies on the hydrogen reaction, one can establish the stability of the intermetallic compounds relative to the hydrides of the component metals. The intermetallic compounds may also be used as getters for hydrogen and as materials for hydrogen storage. This paper will present the results of equilibrium and structural investigations of the ZrCr2-H2, the ZrV2-H2, and the ZrMo2-H2 systems for the temperature range of 0" to 900°C and the pressure range of Torr to 1 atm. A complete thermochemical analysis will be made of the measurements. Some of the results have been referred to in a survey paper' covering the types of hydrogen behavior observed in zirconium alloys. LITERATURE ZrCr2 is the only intermetallic phase in the Zr-Cr system.' It exists in two allotropic modifications. Between 900" and 1000°C the hexagonal MgZa (C14) structure transforms into the cubic MgCu2 (C15) structure. Beck4 has previously shown that the intermetallic ZrCrz takes up hydrogen into solid solution up to a composition H/ZrCr2 = 1.14 at room temperature and 1 atm hydrogen. A ZrCr2 hydride was stated to have a fcc structure. The binary Zr-V system has been investigated by williams5 although Rostoker and Yamamoto 6 had given earlier a partial phase diagram. ZrV2 was the only intermediate phase found in the system. wallbaum7 reported earlier that the compound ZrV2 hp the MgZm (CJ4) type structure with a = 5.288A and c = 8.664A. This was not comfirmed by Elliot8 nor by Matthias, Compton, and corenzwit9 who reported that ZrV2 has a cubic MgCua LC15) type structure. The latter authors gave a = 7.429A. Also, several authors do not agree on the temperature of the peri-tectic horizontal. It appears that ZrV2 may exist in several modifications. A high capacity for occluding hydrogen was reported by Beck4 who found H/ZrV2 = 1.38 at room temperature and 1 atm of hydrogen. ZrMoz is the only intermetallic phase in the Zr-Mo system.10 ZrMoa is formed by a peritectic reaction of the melt with a molybdenum-rich solid solution. ZrMo2 has the C15-type structure with a = 7.59A. MATERIALS High-purity chromium, vanadium, and molybdenum were used together with grade 1 crystal bar zirconium to prepare the alloys. Several sulfidic raw materials have been flash oxidized in a laboratory furnace in oxidizing atmospheres at temperatures of 500-1100°C. Chemical analysis was used to determine the oxidation degree, and optical and scanning electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive analysis were used for characterization of the reacted particles. The studied materials included both Cu and Ni concentrates and mattes. In fixed conditions, the temperature dependence of sulphur removal rate was found to be equal for all the copper concentrates studied. Nickel concentrates and Cu- and Ni-mattes were, however, found to be less reactive. Most of the particles were found to spheroidize and to fragment to small droplets under intensively oxidizing conditions. The product particles were frequently found to be iron oxide cenospheres or dense spheres with a composition of mixed Cu-(Ni-)Fe oxides.

The purpose of this paper is to look at the costs of tailings disposal, and in particular the comparative costs of different disposal methods in different situations. Costs are often the hidden design parameter. We know that they are important but sometimes feel that it is not very respectable to talk about them in public. It is better from a public relations point of view for it to appear that the decision-making process is driven by environmental factors or best practice rather than looking for the cheapest option. But this presumes that the two are mutually exclusive and this need not be so. These issues are discussed later in the paper. It is also commonplace for the scale of the mining operation to change with time, typically involving increased throughput rates and total tonnage. New ideas in tailings disposal make their appearance. The regulatory attitude can change. Having made a decision about the disposal method at the time of original feasibility study and design it is easy to suppose that the mine is æstuck with itÆ. But that also need not necessarily be so. Careful costing of options may reveal that a switch in method could be cheaper in the long run. The designer will often tend to think in terms of initial earthworks and site development costs. Aspects of power consumption, labour, and periodic campaigns to move tailings pipelines and carry out embankment raises are either overlooked or not given the same emphasis. This can distort the evaluation process. It is productive to think in terms of dollars or cents per tonne as a basis of comparison, not just the total sums. Tailings disposal can cost from as little as 10 - 20 ó/t to over $1.00/t which is a big range. There may be good and unavoidable reasons for the high figure but there would need to be to justify being so far over the industry average. At the same time, mining and processing costs, at least for gold, are around $15 - 20/t. Viewed from this perspective tailings disposal will always be a relatively small component of the annual budget.

Currently, virtually all new electric power generation systems under construction are designed with natural gas as the primary fuel. Factors driving these construction decisions involve sustained low prices for natural gas, environ-mental (and consequent regulatory) risks associated with the use of coal for power generation, and relatively high costs of construction for conventional coal-fired power plants. Despite the unarguable abundance of coal in the US. and worldwide, a fundamental question arises: What will be the role of coal in electric power generation in the 21st century? Congress, recognizing the vital and strategic importance of preserving the coal option for electric power generation, authorized the Clean Coal Technology Program. This pro-gram, with original funding in excess of $2,500 million, is intended to promote the demonstration and commercialization of a new generation of clean, efficient coal-based energy technologies through collaboration and partnering with private industry. The two technologies being demonstrated under this program which are the key to the continued use of this nation's huge coal reserves are coal gasification and the pressurized fluid bed. Either or both of these technologies, coupled with a combined cycle will pro-vide the continuing future coal option, while responding to increasingly more restrictive environmental standards. Recent Congressional budget-cutting efforts, however, could threaten the effectiveness of that model program, and ultimately other subsequent government-industry collaboration.

Work in underground coal mines is repetitive and physically demanding. Workers commonly report a wide range of aches and pains. Management at one mine was concerned about increased reporting of aches and pains by roof bolting machine operators. An analysis of roof bolting tasks was conducted at this mine to identify early warning signs of cumulative trauma. Health and safety risk factors were identified and recommendations to reduce cumulative trauma exposure were provided. Recommendations addressed job procedures, equipment design, and worker awareness of risk factors.

Equations which predict the unsteady-state response of the continuous froth flotation cell to changes in operating conditions are necessary for the rational design of an automatic flotation cell control system. Unfortunately application of automatic control to froth flotation separation equipment has lagged behind application to other types of separation equipment (for example distillation columns, absorbers, liquid-liquid extractors, etc). This may be due partly to the unavailability of suitable mathematical models for predicting the dynamics of continuous mechanical froth flotation cell. This paper presents the results of a comparison of four dynamic flotation models (in transfer function form) using the same set of unsteady-state continuous flotation data. One of the transfer functions tested has been presented previously in the literature (1), another (2) has been accepted for publication, and two are given here for the first time. In addition, data are presented which confirm earlier findings that the mixing in the rotor-stator type cell is nearly perfect. The specific purposes of this paper are to: (1) provide the automatic control systems designer with several alternative dynamic mathematical models of the continuous mechanical froth flotation cell (2) give some idea of the relative a¬bility of each model to predict unsteady-state behavior by fitting each model to the same set of experimental stimulus-response flotation data and (3) provide more insight into the macro-mechanisms prevailing in the continuous mechanical flotation cell. The dynamic models which are presented and tested here all relate the time variation of the concentration of a given floatable mineral in the tailings to a time-dependent disturbance in the same floatable mineral concentration in the feed to the flotation cell.

The use of a field spectrometer to systematically analyse drill samples from over 200 holes around the Permian-Carboniferous Ravenswood gold deposits in north-east Queensland has successfully identified both small and deposit-scale changes in the alteration mineral chemistry. Changes in chlorite composition within the tonalite host rocks are evident at the district scale, with Fe-rich chlorites seemingly more common in the vicinity of the deposits. Significant variations in white mica chemistry also occur, but mostly on the vein selvage scale, with no clear distinction between near-mine and distal compositions. The results indicate that chlorite compositional maps produced from regional field or airborne spectrometer data could potentially be used as a vector to ore in exploring for similar deposits in the area. The existence of local room-temperature plastic flow in germanium, which has been a subject of controversy for nearly two decades, has recently received renewed attention, albeit no more agreement than hitherto. Phenomenologically one major facet of the problem has been reduced to the question whether or not indentation can be effected in germanium without the introduction of cracks. That plastic flow can be induced at room temperature by fracture appears to have been rather convincingly demonstrated recently by Suzuki and Kamada and by Noble and Henisch.1 The literature contains both direct and incidental references to Vickers and Knoop indentations showing no cracks, within resolution of optical microscopy. Recently, however, following a controversy on the subject,2,3 johnson4 made a study of indentations produced by spherical indenters and concluded that these are accompanied by cracking. Fletcher Challenge Limited through its subsidiary Grampian Mining Co Ltd has carried out an ore evaluation of one of New Zealand's largest known deposits of ilmenite located at Barrytown on the west coast of the -South Island, New Zealand.The ilmenite is located in a beach sand environment which has previously been mined for gold. Two analytical techniques were developed to quantify the resource. Considerable difficulty was experienced in this phase of the evaluation due to the presence of major inclusions within the ilmenite grains. Wet and dry concentration circuits, utilizing spiral, wet magnet, high tension and plate electrostatic separators have been G47designed to produce ilmenite from the ore. Studies to utilize the titanium content of the Barrytown ilmenite have been made. Recent work has been directed towards a titanium dioxide pigment process.

Each and every mining operation from a simple sand-and-gravel pit to the largest integrated mine-mill-concentrator-smelter-refining complex has, as its foundation, a quantity of extractable natural resource the reserves. Without reserves, there is no mine, and any concentrating or extracting plant, no matter how sophisticated, is simply so much scrap metal. And, of course, without resources there are no reserves. It is remarkable, therefore, especially in this age of careful planning, high quality engineering, and state-of-the-art financial analysis, that such a fundamental and vital item is so little understood and the subject- of so much confusion. Time and time again it has been the experience of the author, when called in to a mining operation that has run into trouble in reaching projected production targets, to find that the designed-for tons were not reaching the concentrator/extraction plant, and/or the grade of such tonnage was substantially below the forecast and design grade of the plant. The mill blames the mine for delivering below standard tons and/or grade and the mining engineer blames the geologist for overly-optimistic assessment or incorrect interpretation of the deposit. The geologist blames the mining and metallurgy division for wrongly interpreting his data and conclusions, or simply fouling-up a fine orebody.

Shaft guide reaetions in No. 2 Ore Shaft, Mount Isa Mines Limited, have been reduced to a low order of magnitude by the use of self aligning slippers and spring loaded guide rollers. Before commissioning the new 4500 h.p. winder at No. 2 Ore Shaft in January, 1958, it was realised that the increase in hoisting speed from 1800 to 2650 ft/min. would cause high shaft guide reactions which would be increased further when the elongated 12 ton skips replaced the existing 7 ton skips.The Cambridge accelerometer was used to measure the shaft guide reactions and to confirm that progressive skip modifications were resulting in reduced reactions. The skip modifications were completed in 4 weeks.INTRODUCTIONIn 1956 an expansion programme was initiated to increase production from 5000 to 11000 tons per mining day. At No. 2 Ore Shaft the 1500 h.p. winder operated at 1800 ft./min. and hoisted a 7 ton capacity skip. The new 4500 h.p. winder operates at 2650 ft./min. and hoists a 12 ton capacity skip. No. 2 Ore shaft is equipped with two 5 ft. by 5 ft. hoisting compartments (Fig. 1) and any increase in skip capacity meant an abnormally long skip. This feature, coupled with the increase in hoisting speed, could have caused very high shaft guide reactions. Before commissioning the 4500 h.p. winder, a Cambridge accelerometer was borrowed from the University of Adelaide and was used to measure the shaft guide reactions. Rather than carry out an extensive shaft timbering programme, the skips were modified by fitting cushioned guide shoes and spring loaded guide rollers (Fig. 1). Testing commenced in February, 1958, and was completed in March, 1958.

Applications of mathematical statistics to the field of exploration are still relatively new. There are two primary reasons why little has been published in this field. First, if one discovers an effective technique for exploration, he does not like to disclose it. Second, the geologist needs to work closely with a mathematical statistician, and the communications barrier between the disciplines is formidable. The authors, one a geologist and the other a statistician, were interested in the economic benefit which appeared to be possible in the inter-disciplinary area they call "geostatistics."

Our merchant marine is rapidly outgrowing our consular service, according to Edward N. Hurley, Chairman of the United States Shipping Board, who urges that steps be taken immediately to provide facilities abroad for handling the millions of tons of shipping which will be afloat under the American flag in peaceful trade when the war is over. When peace is restored and our present tonnage is scattered over world trade routes, the consular service will be inadequate to handle our ships: Besides, it will have to work against the handicaps of obsolete shipping regulations and, in many cases, lack of experience. There are nearly 100 pages in the United States consular regulations dealing with shipping platters. . Many of these regulations are based on old treaties and many of them are obsolete. There are also differences between treaties with various countries. Our consuls often lack authority to handle matters involving the interests of our sailors and shipowners. Before we can operate a modern merchant marine we must revise, standardize, and simplify this whole mass of regulations and bring them up to the efficiency of other nations' practice.
