Pictured on these pages are the seven RMCMI Scholarship Award Winners for the 1992-93 year followed by a brief profile. All winners were present as guests of the Institute at the June convention in Beaver Creek, Colorado to receive recognition at the Institute Awards Luncheon Monday, June 28. 1993. Each state vice president served as the host for the collegiate winner. In addition to receiving a plaque from the Scholarship Chairman, Alan Czarnowsky, each winner receives $750 tuition credit for the coming academic year. As this is a continuing award, the winners from the previous year will receive another $750 for tuition credit in their senior year if they have maintained good academic standing and are recommended by their university. A resident from each of the eight RMCMI member states is selected from among Board approved institutions. Criteria for these awards to be made in the spring annually is (1) That the award be made to a sophomore student and used as tuition during the junior year. (2) That the recipient be both a U.S. citizen and a resident of the member state. (3) That the recipient have good academic standing, be pursing a degree in a mining related field and have an expressed interest in Western coal as a possible career path. The scholarship program includes curricula other than those in the mining departments, but in engineering disciplines, such as geology, mineral processing and metallurgy. Contributions to this worthy project are tax deductible to each individual RMCMI member or his firm. Through annual donations of $100 or more, the Patrons of the Institute fund the scholarship pro- gram and the various vice presidents contribute the travel expenses to convention for these outstanding young collegiates. Fleet operational effectiveness is fundamental to any operation, becoming highly topical in mines experiencing less than optimal output from their fleets. It is an all encompassing aim to identify those factors that could be improved within production and suggesting solutions in order to optimise the existing fleet and obtain the highest return on capital expenditure. The fleet operational effectiveness of a large open pit truck and shovel operation in Western Australia was examined and a study was undertaken allowing identification of areas falling below target. The annualised hours and production downtimes were investigated to quantify the potential gains of improvements in these areas. The project aimed to maximise direct working hours through determination of the main issues hindering performance. External and internal factors were considered and a continuous improvement program (CIP) was developed. The CIP aimed at internal site-based improvement teams to identify and implement solutions for improvement on a day-to-day basis. Strategies were then identified for the implementation of the proposed changes.

I DESIRE to call the attention of the Institute to an interesting experiment, which may turn out to be an indication of a valuable improvement in the manufacture of steel. As the members are aware, the addition of ordinary spiegeleisen, in the open hearth or Bessemer converter, to a bath of decarbonized iron, has a twofold object,-the recarbonization of the bath to a desired degree, and the remedy of the red shortness otherwise found to be inevitable in the final product. This red shortness is ascribed to the presence of oxide of iron in the molten metal ; and it is supposed that the manganese of the spiegeleisen, uniting with the oxygen of such oxide, carries it into the slag. At the same time there is a small percentage of the manganese usually left in the cast steel, probably to the improvement of its quality. Whatever be the true explanation the effect of the manganese is acknowledged to be not only beneficial, but necessary. But the use of spiegeleisen containing high percentages of carbon limits the quantity that can be introduced, because the carbon must be limited if soft steel is desired. This inconvenience becomes so serious as to prevent the use of ordinary spiegeleisen in the manufacture of steel containing more than, say two-tenths per cent. of phosphorus; since the quality of the steel can be made tolerable only by reducing its contents of carbon in proportion as the

Rio Algom Mines Ltd. owns eight uranium mines and mills in the Elliot Lake district of Ontario, seven of which were producing before 1960. At present only one mine is operating meeting current contract requirements. Under present economic conditions, it is not feasible to mine ore of less than 2.0 lbs./ton U308, although there are very large reserves below this grade. We are interested in preconcentration for three possible applications: to extend ore reserves by permitting use of lower grade ore, to reduce costs on processing of present grade ore, and to reduce capital investment in expanding production to meet future production goals.

This pamphlet and the enclosed video describe a safe, effective and economical method for removing dust from work clothes. Background Information Dusty work clothes can increase a worker’s exposure to respirable dust. Respirable dust is usually considered to be particles having an aerodynamic diameter of 10 microns or less and able to enter and deposit in the gas-exchange region of the human lung. A former U.S. Bureau of Mines report documented a 10-fold increase in worker dust exposure on a number of separate occasions from dusty work clothes.* It was found that once clothes become contaminated, they are a continual dust source until cleaned. The only MSHA approved method to clean work clothes requires a HEPA-filter vacuuming system which is very time consuming and difficult to perform effectively. Therefore, most workers use a single air hose (not MSHA approved) which can elevate dust levels for the worker, co-workers, and the work environment. A substantial amount of engineering technology has been developed that, when applied, can significantly lower respirable dust exposures of workers at mineral processing plants. But even with these improvements, some workers continue to exceed their permissible exposure limit. Elevated exposures increase the potential for developing debilitating or fatal lung diseases. ?e clothes cleaning method described within is an example of a continuing effort to reduce the potential for developing these lung diseases. In April 2003 plant upgrades in the æLow GradeÆ Cadia Hill circuit were undertaken in order to improve concentrate quality and metal recoveries from the flotation circuit. The major changes involved: circuit reconfiguration to allow all concentrates to be reground to less than 38 ¦m prior to final cleaning; increasing ball charge in the regrind mill to fully utilise all of the installed power; desliming of the cleaner scavenger concentrate to improve the circuit water balance; and the inclusion of a gravity concentrator in the regrind circuit to recover more free gold to bullion.Once the flotation circuit had stabilised under the new operating conditions concentrate launder modifications and increased froth crowding on the scavenger flotation cells permitted the introduction of stronger collectors without compromising concentrate quality or circuit stability.Twelve months on, the copper concentrate grade has increased by two per cent and metal recoveries increased by three per cent and seven per cent for copper and gold respectively. The project capital outlay of approximately $2.0 million has been repaid in less than three months. This paper will review the project from the design, construction and commissioning perspective as well as the subsequent debottlenecking exercise that was required to eventually yield the full benefits of this upgrade.

Research conducted in South African mines has demonstrated the benefit of ground penetrating radar for the detection of geologic features and hazards. This is crucial for safety and production considerations in underground mines that are as much as 4 kilometers deep. This paper describes a new ground penetrating radar system designed specifically for high quality data acquisition, in the harsh conditions of deep underground environments, for use by operators with minimal geophysical experience. Design criteria included automated functions, intrinsic safety, light weight and minimal power requirements. Data is processed on the ground surface by geoscientists using a PC.

The U. S. Bureau of Mines has been investigating the application of thiosulfate to recover gold directly from low grade refractory carbonaceous ores for the past four years. Statistical experimental methods were used to determine the effects of various leaching parameters on both gold extraction and thiosulfate consumption. Seven variables were investigated, including thiosulfate, copper, ammonia, sulfite, and sulfate concentrations, leaching time, and leaching atmosphere. This information was used in face-centered cubic (FCC) surface response experiments to define the optimum leaching conditions for a low grade ore. Two models were generated from the data to predict gold extraction and thiosulfate consumption as a function of the leaching parameters. The models predicted a gold extraction of 67 pct and reagent consumption of 2 kg [S2032/mt ore at 0.25 M S2032-, 0.0014 M Cu2+, 0.27 M NH,OH, 0.00625 M SO;-,] and leaching for 16 h. Actual tests resulted in 62 pct gold extraction with 0.93 kg S2032- consumed/mt ore. Subsequent column leaching tests have further demonstrated the viability of applying this technology to recover gold from carbonaceous ores without first pretreating the material. Gold extractions in the column tests ranged from 69 to 78 pct with thiosulfate consumption ranging from 0.4 to 5.4 kg/mt ore. These results compare to <5 pct gold extraction using standard cyanide leaching conditions.

"According to the behaviors of resistivity-temperature of Cu-Sb70 melt, which suggests a partly reversible temperature-induced liquid structure transitions (LST) could occur in this alloy, in this paper, we investigated the dependence of solidification on the liquid state. Both resistivity and temperature were measured to track solidification process. The results show that the nucleating undercooling of the melt which experienced the LST increased and the solidified time decreased. Meanwhile, the solidified microstructures refined evidently, with the microscopic pattern of primary phase changes from disordered pillarlike dendrites into homotaxic ones. Moreover, it is verified that the microstructures would be different if the reversible part of the LST was restrained. The new phenomena and results reflected in this paper suggest that grasping the rules of melt structure change with temperature before material processing will give help for controlling the solidification more effectively and finally resulting in more ideal microstructures.IntroductionThe structure and quality of liquid alloys have a direct and important influence on the structure, performance and quality of the solidified ones. In recent years with in-depth study of liquid structure, researchers have found that some liquid structure transitions (LST) could occur on dependence of the temperature or pressure [1-5]. And the article [6] reported that a pressure-induced reversible LST was found in liquid triphenyl phosphite, which further confirmed the authenticity of the existence of the LST. Furthermore, in our earlier studies of Sn-based melts using resistivity method, some abnormal structure changes induced by temperature have been found at hundreds of degrees above liqiudus, and these LSTs are partly reversible[7]. This phenomenon has been discussed and it is suggested that the reversible LST in Sn-based melts are related to the short-range ordering (SRO) structures of Sn, which are tetrahedron structure with covalent bonding. However, does this reversible LST exist in other melts too?"

I have chosen this topic for my address with the intention of preserving a rather extraordinary record of recurrent additions of capital in the financing of one of the world&apos;s important silver-lead-zinc mines. The recitation of the trials and tribulations which fore-shadowed the rise of Mount Isa Mines to a position of relative prominence in the realm of non-ferrous mineral production may, I hope, be of assistance to some of the younger members of the Institute who may be called upon during their careers to meet similardevelopmental and financial problems.Mount Isa Mines Limited was incorporated in New South Wales in 1924 with an Authorised Capital of 40,000 shares of &#163;20 each.In November 1925 the Company acquired the leases and water rights of the Mount Isa Proprietary Silver-Lead Limited for 6,250 fully paid &#163;20 shares. Shortly thereafter, but in the same year, the &#163;20 shares were split up into &#163;1 shares, thus bringing the Authorised Capital to &#163;800,000.The leases purchased consolidated and brought under one management the principal ore bodies of the Mount Isa area.Transportation facilities were indispensable to the economic future of the field, so the construction of a railway extending the Government line from Duchess, 54 ,miles to Mo.unt Isa, was assured by the passage of a bill in October 1925 by the Queensland Parliament. Under the provisions of the so-called Mount Isa Railway Act the Company was required to idemnify the Government against national loss on this branch line for a period of 10 years.

Foundations supporting power transmission and communications towers are subjected to both compression and uplift loads, often of a cyclic nature. Some novel foundations, combining the beneficial features of grouted and helix anchors with that of compression piles and grillages, were developed by Ontario Hydro during the construction of high voltage transmission lines in Ontario, Canada. In addition to meeting the load requirements, the foundations permit easy installation in swampy areas and also minimize impact on environmentally sensitive terrain. This paper describes the features of these composite foundations and outlines the performance criteria used for their design and installation on the basis of load test results.

This paper outlines a method for rapid production of flat,, granular surfaces on many of the medium hard alloys. Grinding wheels and fabrics on wheels are not used; the purpose is accomplished by rubbing on emery papers and on fine abrasives heaped on hand boards. The advantages of chromic acid in the solutions for etching nickel and copper alloys are explained. Steels may require an additional step in the mechanical smoothing owing to the lack of an ideal etchant. Chloric acid is a rapid etchant for steel. Thirty-six photomicrographs illustrate the steps in smoothing and the clearness with which structures can be rapidly exposed. New structures in low-carbon steels are announced. After a little practice, many materials can be finished within two or three minutes. CUPRONICKELS In the previous papers on the metallography of copper and magnesiurn which the author has presented to this Institute there has been an attempt to demonstrate the advantages of minimizing the mechanical work of surfacing and depending more on chemical means; the present paper continues the research into a still wider field. It is obvious that the success of a chemical method for smoothing and etching depends almost entirely on the use of a suitable reagent. The etchant must remove the surface granulations and outline the structures. A very special type of reaction between reagent and metal must be displayed. Promiscuous corrosion or the intensification of the attack about local couples formed by impurities or components must not be in evidence. There are several reagents that etch highly polished nickel and copper alloys very well. Acidified ferric chloride solutions, concentrated and dilute nitric acid solutions, and nitric and acetic acids in acetone have been used to good advantage for the purpose. However, if they are expected to etch rather deeply—that is, smooth as well as characterize— the results may be far from satisfactory. "Advancing our knowledge about trace metal distribution and abundance provides insight into formation, alteration, and trace element enrichment processes of ferromanganese nodules and crusts. A fundamental understanding of these mechanisms, in turn, has implications for the selective recovery of critical metals and the development of sustainable hydrometallurgical techniques. Synchrotron-based X-ray Fluorescence (SXRF) is a powerful, state-of-the-art analytical tool that can examine geochemical features of Fe-Mn nodules and crusts, such as abundance and distribution of trace elements, in an integrated and efficient manner. By correlating trace element composition and Mn oxidation states in these highly complex samples, it can be determined whether these parameters are related to the Mn oxide mineralogy (vacancy content of crystal lattice) and chemistry.In this study, eleven Fe-Mn nodule and crust samples from three circum-Australian locations – the South Tasman Rise, Lord Howe Rise, and Coral Sea – were analyzed at the Australian Synchrotron, Victoria, Australia. Micrometer-scale spatial resolution of geochemical features, such as concentric growth structures and element distribution, was achieved with high sensitivity (Fig. 1). For instance, Ni could be detected at 10's of ppm to 1 wt% levels. Information on other redox-sensitive trace elements, which are present at 10-1000 ppm levels (e.g., Cu, Co, Ti), were gained by means of fully quantitative elemental composition maps."

CdTe semi-conducting materials have been expected as solar cell materials because its theoretical energy conversion ratio is very high. The actual efficiency still low, however, many research works have been done in order to improve the efficiency. And crystal orientation is one of possibilities for that. In this work, a new method using intense magnetic field for a control of texture of CdTe crystals will be proposed, where the CdTe film was electro-deposited under an intense magnetic field. CdTe is less affected by magnetic field, because of its cubic structure, but Cd or Te has hexagonal structure, which is sensitive for magnetic field. In this paper, crystal orientation of Cd or Te film, which can be utilized as basic layer for CdTe deposition, will be developed.

"Dynamic centrifuge tests were performed on unimproved and improved soil with soil-cement column models. The reinforcing effect of isolated soil-cement columns for reducing liquefaction potential and ground deformation in improved soil were investigated. This paper presents the observed acceleration, pore pressure, and settlement responses under an earthquake base motion for both unimproved and improved soil models. In addition, lateral reinforcing effects of soil-cement columns were also investigated in terms of site stiffening effects and the increasing natural frequency of improved soil. The test results show that the soil-cement columns were rather ineffective in preventing liquefaction triggering in improved soil and in significantly reducing the magnitude of the resulting soil settlement compared to the model with unimproved soil profile. Furthermore, the predicted natural frequency of the improved soil profile estimated using existing design equations is shown to be significantly higher than the observed natural frequency inferred from centrifuge tests results. These design equations assume shear strain compatibility between the columns and the surrounding soil. On the other hand, revised design equations that account for shear strain incompatibility between column and surrounding soil are shown to give reasonable estimates compared to the observed natural frequency of the improved soil model.INTRODUCTIONGround improvement using stiff columns (e.g., stone columns, deep-soil-mixing columns, and jet-grout columns), are often used in practice to reduce liquefaction potential (and associated deformations) in loose soil sites. Typically, saturated silty soils are difficult to densify or drain rapidly due to their lower hydraulic conductivity, so densification and drainage techniques of improvement are often found to be ineffective. Instead, the shear reinforcing mechanisms of stiff columns are considered effective for reducing the seismic stresses and strains, and thereby reducing liquefaction potential in the enclosed saturated silty soils (Baez 1995, Adalier and Elgamal 2004, Mitchell 2008)."

Current industrial compacting and briquetting practices are largely based on trial-and-error techniques. This paper introduces a two-dimensional finite element model of briquetting process in the roller press. Compared with other modeling techniques used in the past, finite element method offers the most versatile approach because it incorporates adequate information about powder behavior, geometry and frictional conditions and offers predictions for the density distribution, the velocity field, the stress distribution, roll force and torque. More over, when the model includes elasticity, it offers predictions on the internal stress state in the briquette after its exit from the roll. This enables to perform realistic computer experiments which are helpful for establishing the forming cavity geometry and process conditions necessary to produce briquettes with the desired properties. Three forming cavity profiles are analyzed. Results from model are verified on experimental roller press and best cavity profile is recommended for briquetting of sub bituminous coal fines.

This study deals with the presentation of the mechanized longwall mining project introduced some years ago to increase productivity and output of Aegean Lignite Establishment (ELI) owned by Turkish Coal Enterprises (TKI.) and the comparison of this method with a planned alternative new mining method called ?shortwall mining? where continuous miners will be introduced as primary coal excavation machines. Following the planning phase, production costs have been calculated for both mining methods on the basis of a panel having a height of 7.5 m. In addition to cost analysis, both methods have been evaluated using ?the multi-dimensional objective system?. In this evaluation the value synthesis has been carried out according to scoring models. Lastly, the advantages and disadvantages of both production methods have been stated by analysing them according to related criteria. In the light of outputs gathered from the analyses, it has been determined that the shortwall mining method will out perform the longwall method. Nautilus Minerals is the world leader in exploration and development of deep ocean seafloor massive sulphide (SMS) resources. The company is currently focused on generating its resource pipeline in the Western Pacific and its first development project for recovery of high-grade copper, gold and silver mineralisation from its Solwara 1 site in the Bismarck Sea, Papua New Guinea. The Solwara 1 site is located at a water depth of 1,600 ? 1,800 meters. Over 150 SMS seafloor surface samples have been collected from chimney structures during dives made by remote operated vehicles (ROVs). In order to obtain an understanding of the sub-surface mineralisation, Nautilus carried out 4 drilling programs between 2006 and 2010 which allowed the calculation of a Canadian NI43-101 compliant resource estimate. The initial 2006 campaign was based on conventional offshore surface driven drill equipment. In conjunction with the subsea remote technology industry, Nautilus subsequently developed an ROV operated seafloor drill system with improved drill core recovery and efficiency. This technology was developed further with a 2010 - 2011 drill program to increase the available geological knowledge at Solwara 1 and adjacent prospects. his paper will provide an overview of Nautilus? SMS drilling requirements and recap the evolution of drilling technology and operations undertaken at Solwara 1 from 2006 to 2011. The paper will also discuss the potential of further developments in drilling techniques and equipment to increase or improve drilling depth, efficiency and data quality.
