Constructed stream diversions are a common element of mine sites across Australia. A review of constructed stream diversion performance in the Bowen Basin funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) in 1999 found over 80 per cent of constructed stream diversions failed to meet regulator and operator expectations. Since that time, improvements have been made in the assessment, design, monitoring and management of constructed stream diversions. Fundamental to these improvements has been the development of a better understanding of the regional stream systems and efforts to replicate the natural stream processes in the function and operation of constructed stream diversions.This paper discusses the history of constructed stream diversions through the Bowen Basin in central Queensland recorded in the outcomes of a series of ACARP funded research projects. Further, the paper reports on the outcomes of a current ACARP funded project that has reviewed the success or otherwise of constructed stream diversions in the region. The assessment has compared the performance of diversions that have been designed to replicate and provide for ongoing stream geomorphic processes with those diversions that were designed and built prior to the development of these design improvements. Integrated continuous mining techniques such as fully mobile in-pit crusher and conveyor (FMIPCC) systems offer inherent labour, energy and environmental benefits to deep pit metalliferous mines. However, before such systems become commonplace, a number of barriers must be overcome.This paper outlines a number of commonly perceived barriers to FMIPCC application, together with a number of suggested solutions. The paper advances a design approach for specifying FMIPCC systems for deep pit metalliferous applications. A novel FMIPCC configuration is advanced using a hydraulic excavator in backhoe configuration. Because of the requirement to minimise belt extensions, a mine planning approach is presented based on a series of parallel and radial belt conveyor moves.The FMIPCC system does not fully replace truck-shovel systems. In the proposed mine plan, sinking is undertaken with truck-shovel systems using a series of box cuts, whereas pit ‘widening’ activities are accomplished via the FMIPCC system. Because of inherent differences in mine sequencing, the net present value derived from the FMIPCC mine will differ markedly from that derived from traditional, nested-pit, truck-shovel mining approaches. Batch leaching of Ohio #1, Ohio #4A and Ohio #5 coals was conducted with the thermophilic. sulfur, oxidizing microorganism: Sulfolobus acidocaldarius. Four different size fractions of each coal, with median sizes of 508, 200, 90, and 49 microns, were subjected for 10 days to leaching in a 5% coal-water slurry at 72°C and a pH of 2. Release rates and extent of sulfate and iron I1 and I11 ions from the coals during the leaching process and distribution of sulfur forms (sulfate, pyritic and organic) in the coal samples before and after treatment were determined. Data indicated that Ohio #1 coal, with an initial sulfur content of 0.6%, showed no significant changes with leaching in total sulfur content or forms of sulfur. The Ohio #4A coal, with initial total sulfur content near 5%, yielded product, for sizes below 200 microns with 90% reduction of pyritic sulfur while the extent of organic sulfur removal varied with coal particle size. Results similar to those for Ohio #4A were observed on the Ohio #5 coal, which had an initial total sulfur content of 3% and a final sulfur content near 1%. The findings were interpreted in terms of basic biological, chemical and physical mechanisms.

IN a previous series of papers, the results of studies made on various types of high purity base titanium alloys were presented. Included in this work were the Ti-Mn' and Ti-Cu' alloys, representative of sluggish and active eutectoid systems, respectively. The present paper gives the results of a simi- lar study made on Ti-Mo alloys as an example of a ß-isomorphous alloy system. Experimental Procedures Alloy Preparation—Six ½-lb ingots were prepared from iodide titanium and high purity molybdenum stock. The ingots were arc melted in a water-cooled copper crucible under an argon atmosphere. Each ingot was melted at least twice to insure homogeneity and complete solution of the molybdenum. This was done by inverting the ingot in the crucible and remelting completely.

The introduction of social media platforms has ushered in a new era of interaction and information exchange, which impact business-to-society relationships. Mining companies are closely watching these platforms, as the industry takes a cautious approach to control flows of information. This paper explores the risks, challenges and opportunities of using social media, based on a qualitative mixed methods investigation with stakeholders from the Canadian mining industry. Generational and language barriers, misunderstanding and limited motivation from regulators make implementing social media platforms challenging and risky at an organizational level. The benefits of social media include being able to mobilize communities and share information in real time. Despite the challenges, the study found that 62% of mining stakeholders are incorporating social media tools, mostly in an ad hoc manner. Flexible strategies for transparent communication and public engagement are creating new opportunities for information exchange.

Screening by centrifugal force is a unique subject, for all vibrating screens, with but one exception, depend on gravity alone to pass material through a sizing mesh or screen cloth. Centrifugal screening is one of the greatest advancements made in screening since the development of vibrating screens. It makes possible sizing in a range previously im-practical by mechanical methods. The centrifugal screen is specially designed for fine sizing from No. 4 separations to finer than No. 100 separations. Centrifugal force provides a positive control of factors that make fine particle separation practical and effective as opposed to gravity which is a fixed force acting only in a fixed direction, The centrifugal screen provides a control of the force of material against the screening surface, and also controls the distance of departure of the material from the surface and its rate of return. The centrifugal screen has a rotating drum that becomes a natural fan blowing air outward through the material being screened and carrying float dust and fines through the apertures with it. Screening by centrifugal force is an unique subject, for with the exception of only one vibrating screen presently on the market, all vibrating screens depend upon gravity to pass material through a sizing mesh or screen cloth. This one screen that sizes by centrifugal force and utilizes gravity only to convey material along the screen, is the Symons V-Screen. The requirements of the industrial minerals industry to meet ever-increasing stringent fine sizing specifications by a practical mechanical method accentuates the weakness of gravity, a fixed force acting in a fixed direction, as a prime force for fine sizing. It was apparent a force other than gravity was needed. This led to the development of a centrifugal screen to meet modern demands for practical fine sizing operations. Gyratory-type screens in use today were originally designed in a day when a 1/4-in. separation was normally considered fine sizing and 1/8-in. separations were extremely fine sizing. Although gyratory-type screens are sometimes used for separating below 1/8-in., they are not practical screens for this purpose. They were not designed to do this type of work. A growing demand for a practical means of making positive mechanical separations in a range of from 1/8 in. downward led to the development of the vibrating screen. THE Northwestern Pennsylvania Oil Producers Association and the United States Geological Survey have cooperated in conducting a pre-liminary study of the character of the flood waters, the relationship of changes in concentration of the salts dissolved in these waters to ultimate flood-oil production, and the original association of oil and water in the Bradford field. Bradford has long been recognized as a dry-sand field. As a matter of fact, there had been little information available on the oil-field waters of northern Pennsylvania until this investigation was undertaken. THE BRADFORD SAND Practically all of the oil produced in the Bradford field comes from one horizon, generally known as the Third, or Bradford, sand. Originally, it was believed that the Bradford sand was equivalent to the Third sand of Venango County, Pennsylvania and the name "Third" unfortunately still persists, although shortly after the discovery of the Bradford pool Carll1 determined that there was a stratigraphic interval of approximately ;000 ft. between the two horizons. The Bradford sand, although varying considerably in thickness and lithology within local areas, is persistent throughout the field. It is of marine origin and, upon both paleontologi-cal and stratigraphic evidence, is regarded as a basal member of the Chemung formation.

Oxidizing catalytic converters are sometimes used by underground mine operators as an emission control device to reduce odor, hydrocarbon (HC), and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions from diesel equipment. The objectives of this report are to quantitatively assess the effects of catalytic converters on diesel exhaust emissions and to make recommendations for their use. Information in this report is from a literature survey and contract research supported by the Bureau of Mines. Catalytic converters are effective in reducing CO, HC, and odors when the exhaust temperature is high enough so that the converter remains above 250° C. Converter temperature is dependent upon engine duty cycle. Catalytic converters increse sulfate emissions and slightly in- crease oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions. If low sulfur fuels are not used, the increase in sulfate and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) emissions can offset any advantages of the catalytic converter as measured by the emissions quality index (EQI). In addition, in vitro bioassays have shown that catalytic converters produce soluble organic compounds, which have increased mutagenic activity with respect to untreated exhaust. Based upon criteria recommended by a joint Canadian-United States research panel, catalytic converters should only be used in special circumstances in underground mines. Vehicles equipped with catalytic converters should operate under moderate to heavy load conditions, and use fuel with a sulfur content less than 0.1 pct.

There was a decline in the Italian oil production in 1933 and also in the footage drilled. A total of about 194,500 bbl. of crude oil was produced in the Emilia district of northern Italy from the same fields in production as in 1932. New drilling to the extent of 80,700 ft. failed to find new production to compensate for the decline in old wells, and no new fields were discovered in spite of an active exploration campaign by the government-owned company A.G.I.P., which has just completed the first year of a five-year exploration program. This company drilled a total of about 33,000 ft. The majority of its tests were drilled in the Po Valley upon locations selected by geophysical methods. This company is changing over to the rotary system for all future wells. It produced about 16,600 bbl. of oil from wells near Salsomaggiore and in the Po Valley. The Petroli d'Italia, which operates the old fields of Montechino, Valleja and Gratera south of Piacenza, has been doing normal development drilling in the endeavor to extend its present fields. Also it was drilling two exploration wells in the Torino district. It drilled a total of about 13,930 ft. and produced approximately 12,645 bbl. of very high-grade oil (specific gravity about 0.765). The Societa Petrolifera Italiana was occupied chiefly in exploratory drilling in the endeavor to extend its producing fields at Salsomaggiore and at Vallezza, south of Parma. It was also drilling one exploration well at Rile dell7Olio near Voghera on the line Milan-Genoa. It drilled a total of 33,849 ft. and obtained a production from its two fields of 165,273 bbl. It also produced 123,220 gal. of casinghead gasoline from Vallezza field absorption plant.

Most of the 154 t (170 st) truck fleets that were predominant in large surface mines in the 1970s and 1980s are approaching the end of their economic life. One replacement option considered by mine operators is a change to the 2 18 t (240 st) trucks. A comparison of load capacities between the 1.54 t (170 st) and the 2 18 t (240 st) trucks indicates a large productivity advantage in favor of the 218 t (240 st) trucks. This advantage, however, is often reduced by a number of site-specific factors. Therefore, a careful evaluation is required to define the actual benefit of changing to the large trucks. This article discusses some important factors that have an impact on truck size selection, based on several different studies. 218 t (240 st) trucks The 2 18 t (240 st) rear dump trucks were first introduced for surface mine service almost 10 years ago. However, it is only during the last few years that this equipment has gained acceptance in the surface mining industry. About 250 units were employed in surface mines worldwide at the beginning of 1992, and further purchase commitments are being made. Encouraged by the mining industry’s interest, all major off-highway mining truck manufacturers now offer 218 t (240 st) models (Table 1). At present, the existing 218 t (240 st) truck fleets are dominated by electric drive trucks. However, recent introduction of a 2 18 t (240 st) mechanical drive truck rounds out the development of this truck size.

You wouldnÆt start excavating before testing core samples, so why would you approve a project plan before all factors have been identified, reviewed and addressed? Even a champion sports team made up of the best players canÆt produce optimal results without a well understood and agreed game plan. Could an F1 racing team produce their outstanding performance without rigorous evaluation and testing of the factors for successful performance? Why would we expect a capital works project team to be able to get it right without an understanding and an involvement in setting and implementing the overall game plan and without an understanding of all stakeholder requirements? For International PowerÆs Hazelwood (IPRH) mine in Victoria, the challenge was development and delivery of a 40 year mine plan, ultimately involving relocation of existing mine operations into an adjacent new coal field, land acquisitions and major environmental and other approvals to allow diversion of three streams, a highway, an Over Dimension route and other infrastructure in a political and environmentally sensitive atmosphere. The lessons from International Power HazelwoodÆs (IPRH) experience are: that the clear set of project principles and guiding values ensured delivery of a robust plan; a robust plan can withstand significant change; and value management (VM) played an important role in providing assurance, to all, that the plan was sound at both the strategic and micro levels. This Hazelwood mine project included five major VM workshops. The first was a critical review process in addition to design and cost reviews. This VM workshop was used to analyse, at a high level, the preferred coal mining sequence and design concepts, together with the interaction between design elements, risks and costs. In addition to this, the workshop provided an agreed common pathway for all downstream decisions. A second VM study was conducted to ensure that the proposed plan and design for relocation of the conveying systems from the existing mine into the new field were planned for optimum achievement from a whole of life cost, time, operational and maintenance perspective, plus the logistics of continuing operations while relocating assets. A third study followed to review the Conveyor Transfer Alliance and review functional design. A fourth VM study workshop was formed at the start of Phase 2 Alliance to ensure that the best value for money was being achieved through the current design, schedule and project arrangements and that all interfaces between parties had been reviewed and responsibilities were clear and understood. Other studies are outlined later in this paper. This paper details the evaluation criteria and processes used in the project evaluation that led to the WestField Mine Development.

This paper is the second of a series recording the results of tests made at various quarries throughout the United States to determine, (1) the relation between the size gradation of feed to, and product from, primary crushers; (2) the particle shape of crushed product; (3) the differences in gradation and particle shape produced by different tries of primary crushers; and ( 4) the differences in gradation and particle shape caused by crushing different kinds of stone. Primary crushing has received comparatively little attention in the technical literature in spite of tine fact that the design of the whole crushing plant should be correlated to the performance of the primary crusher.

After the Loma Prieta Earthquake, which caused major damage to viaducts in the Bay Area, the California Department of Transportation set up a test programme for foundation piles. Funderingstechnieken Verstraeten B.V., beter known as Fundex, was approached, since one of the piling systems of Fundex, named Tubex, is extremely suitable in areas sensitive to earthquakes and we were very much interested to prove the capabilities of this piling system. Equipment For the installation of Tubex and Tubex grout-injection piles special piling equipment is required. Since our company is not only a contractor, but also a designer and manufacturer of piling equipment, all special equipment for our range of foundation techniques is designed and built by our own piling equipment department. This paper describes the concept and development of the use of a uni-delay shock tube system in the timing and initiation of the development rounds, specifically in flat development. It was extended from stoping and now constitutes the only initiation system is use at Kopanang mine. The two explosives initiation systems in general use in underground mines are the conventional fuse-igniter cord system, and the more modern Long Period Delay shock tube system, better known as the numbered LP system. Both are well accepted but have many drawbacks which can result in poor breaking and substantial wastage of the blasting material. Both of these deficiencies cause an increase in the cost of a blast. Hitherto, the limited number of delays available has complicated the use of shock tubes in development blasting. Over eighteen month period to the end of 2007, a project team comprising members from Kopanang Mine and AEL developed a method for the use of a uni-delay shock tubes to time any development round. These uni-delay shock tubes are better known as Reef Masters® or EZ-Stopers® depending on the supplier, and the system has particular application in flat development. During the project, two new shock tube system components were designed, tested and manufactured; namely Splitters and Starter Packs. The system has been successfully tested and implemented in both on-reef and off-reef development ends. At Kopanang, it has now been rolled out across the entire mine. Other AnglogoldAshanti mines are conducting trials and implementations into production sections. Initial results indicate improvements in the ground conditions and excavation profiles. The cost of blasting is showing a downward trend. The authors consider that the system is a tool for use in further blast optimization and will contribute to rationalization of the explosives commodities basket on mines.

INTRODUCTION Almost seventy-five years ago problems in the recovery of sulfides from then designated slime fractions were the impetus for the development of flotation. The fall-off in recovery by gravity methods below about 200-mesh, and the shift from coarser vein deposits to more disseminated ores, particularly for copper, provided the background for flotation's rapid advances. Although the ensuing years have witnessed major improvments both in flotation reagents and in flotation machines, many problems are still with us. And since, with the exception of the unique leaching of chalcocite ores at Inspiration, flotation is still the exclusive mainstay for primary recovery of all base metal sulfides, the solution of these problems as they arise is vital to the well-being of the mining industry. Before considering the problems themselves, it will be useful to review the current status of sulfide flotation in the United States. The last comprehensive survey by the Bureau of Mines in 1975 (1) showed sulfide ore tonnages treated from 1960 to 1975 as summarized in Table 1; Table 2 gives similar data for the flotation of all non-sulfide ores. Noteworthy is the leveling off in sulfide ore tonnages in 1970-1975, with a probable further decline in the past three years, and the sharp drop in the number of plants floating sulfide ores. In contrast, the tonnages of non-sulfide ores floated, as well as the number of individual plants, has continued to increase. In spite of these trends, two-thirds of the total tonnage of the ores to which flotation is applied is still represented by sulfides. Average grades of sulfide ores in 1975 were: about 0.6 percent for copper; near 5 percent for lead; and near 3 percent for zinc. Recoveries averaged in the low 80's for copper; about 95 percent for

Many years ago, a relationship was established between dust inhalation and pneumoconiosis. Since then, various government agencies have regulated crystalline and amorphous forms of silica material in the workplace. In 1987, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified crystalline silica as a probable carcinogen. With this listing, crystalline silica became a regulated substance under the Hazard Communication Standard. The minerals and chemicals industries have responded in various ways. They have: • developed worker and user training programs and literature; • labeled products with appropriate warnings; • continued to implement dust reduction programs; and • developed meaningful epidemiological studies of workers. • begun development of reliable analytical methods for measuring crystalline silica at the 0.1 % threshold level; Background Silicosis historically has been the major health hazard resulting from exposure to crystalline silica. Silicosis is the scarring of the lung from excessive exposure to crystalline silica. It has been recognized as an occupational disease for more than 2000 years, since early Greek physicians noted the respiratory problems of miners, stonecutters, and quarrymen who were exposed to excessive quantities of mineral dust. During the industrial revolution, the incidence of the disease was greatly increased by the use of machinery that increased dust levels. Subsequently, the need for dust control was recognized and measures were instituted. Silicosis is characterized by progressive breathlessness on exertion and develops over the course of years. In the paper presented by F.W. Brackebusch on the "Basics of paste backfill systems," paste fill was presented as a backfill process that offers many advantages over other alternatives such as hydraulic fill and rock fill. It was observed, however, that the mechanics of paste-fill transportation in pipelines is not fully understood and that the success of its implementation in practice depends on the precise control of the proportions of fines, aggregates and water in the mixture. The author emphasized the necessity for laboratory and full-scale testing to determine the suitability of a material to be used as paste fill. Although experimental testing is definitely an important operation in the design of a reliable paste fill, advances in the understanding of the fundamental laws that govern paste flow in pipelines are equally relevant. Ideally, the results of such efforts would provide predictive models for the rheology of the paste and the corresponding pumping-energy requirements. In an attempt to achieve this objective, an ongoing research program has been active at McGill University's Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering. Preliminary results showed that the underlying mechanics of paste-fill flow in pipelines may be described in terms of what is known as "plug flow," as depicted in Fig. 1. Although this flow mechanism has been known qualitatively for many years, few attempts managed to offer a comprehensive model (Gandhi, 1987; Duckworth, 1986). In our model, it is assumed that coarse aggregates present in the mixture form a porous core, which is filled with paste (fines and water) and is surrounded by an annular non-Newtonian (Bingham-plastic) lubrication layer, which enables the mixture to flow with pressure losses that are easily overcome by common positive-displacement pumps. In summary, our model predicts the thickness of the annular lubricating layer, which controls the magnitude of the pressure losses. This is done either by collecting data on the apparent viscosity of the Theologically-active fine fraction and using an analytical equation (Bouzaiene, 1994), or is done by measuring the void content of the coarse aggregates and deducing the thickness as a function of the fine- to coarse (weight or volume) fraction ratio in the mixture for a given pipe diameter and solids concentration. Our model predictions showed good agreement with data from Duckworth et al. (1986), as shown in Fig. 2.? In comparison with shallow foundation, usually higher bearing capacity, smaller average settlement and better stability are the engineering characteristics of pile foundation. Besides, a smaller differential settlement and a lower settlement rate which will converge quickly are more important characteristics. The superstructure of the building with pile foundation may not meet with significant differential settlement. In this paper, settlement records and other data of different kinds of buildings are chosen to illustrate the characteristics of pile foundation. Moreover, some technical problems in connection with foundation engineering solved in consideration of the above mentioned characteristics of pile foundation are also introduced.
