INTRODUCTION R&D activities are needed, at a minimum, for a company's competitive survival followed in importance by the growth and diversification of the company. For most industrial companies, however, R&D is the business area that has been the most difficult relative to confident long-range financial commitments and effective control and relative to its value as a long-term investment. Investors look not only at the current profitability of the company but increasingly at the plans, actions, and quality of the personnel in position to improve the market position and profitability of an organization. "The strongest predictor of investment value is the degree of innovation of the 'company.' I believe this is true of both strategic planning and R&D activities." R&D is the lifeblood of a company's future. If this basic premise-R&D for survival and growth-is believed to be true, why is it necessary to "Sell R&D in your organization? My personal experience, in a number of organizations, is that R&D budget is perceived as a business element area that could be delayed or reduced to improve the bottom line during difficult business conditions. I believe the following quote speaks volumes about this subject-"There is only one thing I know for certain about research, and that is it costs money-lots of it." -Unnamed, Hard- headed Financial Executive. A business must make money and be profitable in order to maintain and create jobs, pay taxes, cover working capital and costs of goods sold, and most importantly, create value for its shareholders. The foremost element of selling R&D, therefore, is to consistently demonstrate the R&D group's contribution to the bottom line.

Flow field hydrodynamics of serpentine flow channels was investigated numerically using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The velocity profile simulated by the CFD model was evaluated with respect to experimental results from the literature. Rectangular and tapered flow channels were compared with respect to mixing and water management capabilities, and pressure drop. The CFD model was further developed to account for electrochemical reaction on the cathode side to determine which channel configuration was most effective in reactant conversion. The velocity profile differences between the channels were found to impact reactant conversion, as the rectangular channel had the highest conversion. With respect to water management, although the tapered channel was found to have a higher overall pressure drop, the rectangular channel was found to have higher shear and pressure forces acting on simulated liquid water droplets in the channel.

This paper addresses the challenges of designing the underpinning of major sub-way station with 4 operating tracks. No. 7 subway extension crosses under the existing 42nd street subway station on the 8th Avenue line. Understanding the history of the original construction, of the current structures and their condition were instrumental in developing a feasible underpinning design that is integrated with the design of the new tunnels. The existing 8th Avenue subway station has a lower abandoned level. Several alignments and corresponding underpinning schemes were studied. The design allows new tunnel construction under the station without interruption of station operations.

Cable charges are theoretically endless. Practically,they are composed of very long sausage like explosive charges. They are primarily used for excavating ditches in soils. Blasted ditches are necessary in agriculture for irrigation purposes and for canals. Horizontal cable charges can be made by using a single or double strand of detonating cord. They can be placed into the mud at the bottom of ditches and used to clean or deepen the already existing ditch. They can also be used for soil compaction. Cable charges have been used for blasting soil in the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Poland, the German Democratic Republic and Hungary. Their use was first mentioned in the first edition of Weichelt's handbook on blasting (German Democratic Republic, 1949).

There is evidence that study of minerals now considered to have susceptibilities too low for magnetic separation should be continued. Present concepts may be false. INFORMATION on magnetic properties of minerals other than magnetite is scanty and sometimes erroneous. Often there is no information at all. W. R. Crane's table of tractive forces published in 1901 is still the best guide in the field, but Crane's data can be used as a guide only, since he ignored such important factors as impurities in the minerals, size, and packing effect. During the 1930's work by the U. S. Bureau of Mines added greatly to knowledge of the behavior of certain minerals in a magnetic field. The USBM bulletin gave for the first time complete magnetic characteristics for magnetite and fragmentary data for a few other minerals. The work reported here covers a study of the magnetic-susceptibility relationships of the wolframite series of minerals and sphalerites as related to their chemical compositions. Theories are proposed to explain divergences found from commonly accepted beliefs. Gouy Method for Determining Magnetic Susceptibility: The Gouy principle has been adequately described in the literature1-3 and applied in various ways.'- It may be summarized by stating that a body of material (gas, liquid, solid, or powder mixed with gas or liquid) of cylindrical shape changes in apparent weight if suspended with one end in a zone of higher magnetic field strength than is found in that portion of the field surrounding the other end of the cylinder. This may be expressed as K2 - K1 A (H2 - H2) - mg. [1] In determining the susceptibility of mineral specimens by the Gouy method, the mineral is reduced to a fine powder and packed in a glass weighing tube. The extreme difficulty of obtaining a short and, at the same time, exact method for the determination of gold and silver in copper-materials has been well illustrated in "Assays of Copper and Copper-Matte," and its discussion, by Dr. A. R. Ledoux and other leading authorities on this subject.* Two general methods were used by the numerous assayers who took part in the symposium initiated by Dr. Ledoux, and whose results are given in the paper and discussion. One of these is the dry or fire-method, consisting of scorification and cupellation, the former being repeated if the percentage of copper is very high, all slags and cupels being assayed and the results so obtained added to the ordinary assay; and the copper retained by the silver buttons being determined and deducted from the combined weight of the buttons obtained from the assay of the original material, the scorification-slag, and the cupel. The other is the wet or combination-method, which, while not involving so much work, requires a longer time. Briefly, it is as follows : The material to be assayed is dissolved in nitric acid, the solution is diluted, and the fine undissolved gold is collected by means of sulphate of lead, formed by the addition of lend acetate and sulphuric acid to the solution, After standing from 12 to 24 hours, the precipitate is filtered off, and the silver in the filtrate is precipitated as a chloride or bromide, and collected by means of sulphate or bromide of lead. The solution containing this precipitate in suspension is again allowed to stand until the precipitate has settled. It is then filtered; both precipitates, containing the gold and silver, are dried, ignited and scorified, either separately or together, and the result is cupelled in the usual way.

Xanthates and dithiophosphates are the most commonly used collectors in the flotation of sulfide minerals. Other reagents such as thionocarbamates, mercaptobenzothiazoles (MBT), mercaptans and xanthogen formates occupy niche positions in industrial collector use. Over the last ten years there has been much activity by chemical companies to develop new collector compositions. The new collectors are aimed at meeting specific process needs such as recovering an increment of valuable metals, improved sulfide separations, increased flotation kinetics, and reducing reagents costs. A review of the patent literature shows that American Cyanamid (Cytec), Dow Chemical, Phillips Petroleum, Sentrachem Ltd., Henkel, Montan Chemicals and Elf Aquitaine, among others, have been active in sulfide collector research. Several companies have achieved considerable success in laboratory and plant tests of the new collectors; however, commercial acceptance for plant usage has been slow. Those most advanced have been plant tested extensively and some are in day-to-day use. The new collector types in this category are: Modified thionocarbamates, dithiophosphinates, organic sulfides, trithiocarbonates, monothiophosphates, and modified thioureas. Others such as substituted mercaptobenzothiazoles and monothiophosphinates have been tested in the laboratory. The chemistry of collectors developed in the last 10 years, their preparation, physical properties and their potential for commercial use are reviewed in this paper.

An extensive laboratory campaign was conducted to find a suitable water soluble collector to replace diphenylguanidine (DPG) in the matte separation process. The examination of the collectors was done by measuring the rate of flotation and the best candidate collectors were selected on the basis of the rate parameters. As a result of this search mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) was selected for a plant trial. A plant trial of two weeks duration confirmed that MBT will produce separations at least as good as those obtained with DPG.

The lesser developed countries (LDC's) may be classified into two categories: 1) oil producers, and 2) non-oil producers. The non-oil producing LDC's, as a class, are at present in very difficult financial straits. (1) Since the quadrupling of world market crude oil prices in 1972, an ever greater share of the LDC's export earnings have gone to pay for oil imports, in-stead of national reinvestment. The LDC's inter-national debts--much of it to pay for oil--have soared to record levels, with consequent limits for future credits. (1) Again, this inhibits future national investments, and there does not seem to be an end to the future increase of Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) prices. Indeed, some of the economic difficulties in some metal markets--particularly the imbalance of production vs. markets for copper, can be traced indirectly to the OPEC cartels' heavy-handed impact on copper producing LDC's which must produce copper at any price to meet their oil bills. (2) Among the major oil importing LDC's are the Philippines and South Korea. 50th nations have substantial cement industries. The South Korean industry is geared for major export markets in the Far East. Both nations have ambitious plans for economic growth in order to accommodate burgeoning populations with ever increasing expectations for high standards of living. These plans had some success, more or less, until the high OPEC oil cartel charges had to be borne. Now, in common with all oil-deficit areas, the Philippines and South Korea are seeking lower cost sources of energy. Both countries have coal deposits. In the case of the Philippines, the reserves are in scattered, relatively small deposits. Most of the coal deposits are faulted, folded and, in general present formidable production problems for limited reserves. Nonetheless production has been on the order of about 70,000 to 150,000 tons per year in the last 30 years. Prior productions (1920-1941) varied between 9,000 Co 150,000 tons per year. (13)

THE primary objective of the young graduate, after the war, will be to obtain a suitable position within the Industry, with adequate pay and opportunity to advance. The positions available to meet this demand will depend on the magnitude and organization of the industry. The size of the mining industry, in particular, will depend on a number of factors, including depletion; new discoveries of mineral deposits; beneficiation of new kinds of mineral deposits, based on research; technical improvements, also based on research, enabling the mining of lower grade deposits; and complex social factors. The organization of the industry will depend on its control and management, which may be greatly affected by social conditions and changes, and may include a wider or a narrower use of technical services. The corresponding training or qualifications of graduates, to meet these conditions, calls for a consideration of educational requirements and facilities in relation to the conditions that are likely to occur. Some forecast of the probable future of the Industry, after the war, based on consideration of. the above factors, is necessary as a basis of discussion, since the graduate must find his place in the industry of that time, and find his work in maintaining and improving it, within the existent social framework. Social factors are pressing and? important at present and their future impact is uncertain. In considering these, a few quotations and extracts may be in order. "A new economic order, based on free access to the sources of raw materials, means free use of the world's wealth by all civilized nations" (The Pope. Also advocated by Churchill and Roosevelt in the Atlantic Charter). "Every citizen should have a voice in the conduct of business or industry which is ?carried on by means of his labour" (Archbishop of Canterbury).

Nickel sulfide ores lend themselves readily to concentration before smelting or pressure leaching, but neither of the major oxidized ore types-the iron-rich laterites and magnesium-rich, soft silicates-has been directly concentrated. Upgrading of crude ore in current practice is limited to cobbing lumps of the harder, lower grade rock (protore) from the softer, enriched silicate ore, because only a small percentage of the nickel in these ores occurs in discrete, contrasting mineral particles. There is no apparent mineralogical contrast in the superficial, iron-rich lateritic ores and, in fact, there is no firm assurance that the nickel atoms are within the lattices of the limonite minerals, or else irregularly adsorbed on the limonite. Within underlying, "rotten rock" silicates, occasional veinlets of garnierite and related nickeliferous silicates are found.1 The garnierite veinlets are only incidental, and the majority of the nickel atoms occur as erratic replacements of magnesium atoms in the micaceous chlorites of the ore mass.

During the last two decades, China has expanded its iron and steel industry very quickly, from less than 100 Mt/a steel production to over 700 Mt/a. It caused big increases in both domestic iron ore production and imported iron ore quantities year by year. The mode of iron ore supply has changed from almost all domestic supply to major tonnes of imported ore plus domestic ore supply. Over 200 blast furnaces with volumes larger than 1000 m3 each have been built and put into operation. Sinter machines have been enlarged quickly. There are now 135 sinter machines with =200 m2 sintering area each. Pellet production increased from 11.94 Mt in 1999 to 210 Mt in 2011, resulting from rapidly increasing domestic concentrate supply and rapid development of the grate-kiln process. The typical ferrous burden constitution is high basicity sinter plus pellets plus lump. The pellet proportion increased and the sinter proportion decreased gradually. A lot of technical improvements, like deep bed sintering, sintering with a high ratio of limonite, composite sintering, pellet process optimisation, a high ratio of hematite in pelletisation, blast furnace operation with low-grade ferrous burdens and hazardous element control, etc have been made to enhance iron burden quality and to reduce hot metal cost. Chinese iron and steel production is expected to increase slightly in the next few years. Its overcapacity should be controlled effectively. Given the variations of iron ore supply, pellet production will keep progressing in terms of production scale and pellet quality, the sintering process will be improved further by various measures to utilise different ores efficiently, and ferrous burden constitution will be optimised continuously to realise the lowest cost of hot metal production.CITATION:Sha, Y and Wang, Z, 2013. Knowing the location of voids/fractures in roof rock will be greatly helpful for roof support design. The drilling parameters obtained during normal roof bolt installation cycle provide a fast and economic way for determining void location in roof rock. In this research, feed pressure and rotation torque are found to be good indicators for identifying the voids, based on the results of a series of laboratory experiments. A set of computational rules has been developed to locate voids in mine roof using the measured roof drilling parameters and implemented in MRGIS, a software package developed to allow mine engineers to make use of the large amount of roof drilling parameters for predicting roof geology properties automatically. Anew feature, 2D map+3D figure display, is also added to MRGIS.

The development in the laboratory of mall salt cavities illustrated that the rate at which salt dissolved was affected by the rate at which fresh water was injected into the cavity. Experiments carried out with small salt cores indicated, however, that the rate of salt removal with forced convection was not significantly different from that with natural convection, provided the flow was in the laminar range. The rate of salt removal was apparently controlled by the water salinity, which was indirectly determined by the rate at which fresh water was injected. With turbulent flow at the salt surface, the rate of salt removal could be increased several-fold with the same salinity in the cavity. A quantitative evaluation of the rate of salt removal under natural convection was attempted by using techniques developed for the analogous heat convection system. The values of the rate of salt removal obtained experimentally were considerably greater than the calculated values due to surface irregularities. To determine the effect of these irregularities, the rate of salt removal was found for a smooth surface by experimentally determining the rate of salt removal as an irregular surface developed and then extrapolating this trend back to initial time. Excellent agreement between the experimental and calculated values then were obtained. INTRODUCTION Underground cavities leached from massive salt formations have been used extensively for many years for storing LPG products. The development techniques for storing methane gases in the liquid state at a low temperature leads to speculation that underground salt cavities of controlled geometry may be quite important in this field. In any case, the increasing number of salt cavities used for storage indicates an impending need for a better knowledge of the washing process to efficiently develop maximum storage volumes within specified regions. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss some aspects of -the mechanism of the dissolution of salt in the formation of cavities of controlled geometry. Although no attempt is made to resolve the problems that may be associated with the storage of methane in the liquid state in salt formations, the fact that salt cavities can be formed at reasonable cost would appear to justify investigation in this direction. Further, underground cavities have the advantage of allowing storage at higher pressures (and hence higher temperatures) than surface installations. Although the thermal conductivity of salt is somewhat higher than frozen earths, 0.017 cal/(sec) (cm)(c) for salt at 32F vs 0.005 cal/(sec) (cm) () for ice at this temperature, this disadvantage is offset by the higher storage temperature in underground cavities. For example, at atmospheric pressure, the temperature of liquid methane would be —258F. In a storage cavity at 2,000 ft, the pressure would be approximately 1,000 psia, which would allow a storage temperature of -9OF. The formation temperature would be roughly 110F at this depth, hence the total temperature differential would be 200F. Under surface storage conditions the corresponding temperature difference would be some 333 F (75 F + 258 F). The results of this difference can be compared more readily by substituting the appropriate values of thermal conductivity, temperature difference, heat capacity and density into the solution of the diffusion equation for the unsteady linear conduction of heat. For the underground salt storage, the heat flux is 15cal/(sec) (sq cm), where t is the time in seconds from the initiation of the cooling. For the surface system, and using the thermal properties of ice at the average temperature, the corresponding figure is 21cal/(sec) (sq cm). Hence, the heat losses through ice under surface conditions would be some 30 per cent higher than the underground salt storage. This ratio would vary, considerablv. Of course, for other conditions, but it indicates that an advantage over surface facilities may be obtained by storage in underground salt cavities.

The US Bureau of Mines investigated the selective electrowinning of Ag and Au from cyanide solutions contaminated with Cu with the goal of decreasing the amount of Cu codeposited. Decreasing Cu codeposited will reduce refinery costs. Direct current was applied to the cell in pulsed and square wave voltages at 0.7 A h/150 mL of solution. Times tested for each cycle ranged from 1 to 10,000 msecs. Graphite, lead and stainless steel were evaluated as electrode materials. Square wave electrowinning at 70°C (158° F) gave the best separation of Ag and Au from Cu. Applying 2.5 V during the duty cycle, 0.0 V the rest of the period, a duty cycle of 10% to 30%, and a period of 100 msecs to 1000 msecs gave the following results: Ag concentrations decreased from 34 µg/mL to 0.1 µg/mL. Au concentrations decreased from 54 µg/mL to 0.2 µg/mL and Cu concentrations remained almost constant at 560 µg/mL.

Fly rock is common when blasting shallow holes and during secondary blasting. Although the required quantity of explosives for secondary blasts is less, noise and fly rock can have an enormous environmental impact. This paper mainly deals with field experiments on blast-design parameters and addresses some precautionary measures that can be taken when pop shooting.
