"Copper electrodeposition from synthetic and authentic acid mine drainage (AMD) is inhibited by ferric iron (Fe(III)), through re-oxidation of copper. Polarization to –2.5 V versus standard hydrogen electrode prevents the dissolution of predeposited copper from the cathode. Above pH 1, copper deposition is independent of Fe(III) concentration to approximately 25 g/L. Fe(III) is reduced to ferrous iron (Fe(II)), with a high combined current efficiency for iron and copper reduction. In a divided cell, the conversion of Fe(III) to Fe(II) is almost quantitative, with efficient transfer of acidity from catholyte to anolyte. Prospects for developing electrochemical technology for complete remediation of AMD are discussed.RÉSUMÉ En raison de la réoxydation du cuivre, le fer ferrique (Fe(III)) nuit à l’électrodéposition du cuivre à partir de drainage minier acide (DMA) véritable et synthétique. Une polarisation à -2,5 V par rapport à l’électrode standard d’hydrogène empêche la dissolution du cuivre déjà déposé de la cathode. Multiple seam mining is predominant throughout the central Pennsylvania Appalachian coal fields. Wide ranges in individual seam thickness, coal quality, and overburden characteristics are common throughout the region. On typical mining permits, ranging from 404 x 103 to 2023 x 103 m2 (100 to 500 acres), often as many as eight seams are concurrently mined, with each interburden requiring unique economic and environmental consideration in the mine plan. Specifically, this paper presents several planning tools and operational guidelines developed in response to current regulations for the special handling of potentially acid-forming materials as they are related to development and operation of multiple seam mines.

A probabilistic slope stability computer model was developed at Utah State University and independently evaluated by CH2M Hill Consulting Engineers as a design and analysis tool. Volume I of this report describes the model and Volumes III and IV are users manuals for the computer programs. This volume (Volume II) constitutes the report by the CH2M Hill. It includes a description of a field investigation and stability analysis of an existing tailings dam. Based on the results of the analysis, the tailings dam was evaluated for redesign using probabilistic considerations. Conclusions are made regarding the usefulness of the model as a design tool.

"As part of a major diversification project, RHI AG, through its plant in Drogheda Ireland, has developed a Caustic Calcined Magnesium Oxide (CCM) for use in the Cobalt (Co) & Nickel (Ni) hydrometallurgical extraction industry. In the course of the project, the company investigated the chemical and physical properties of a number of different Magnesia’s used in Co & Ni hydrometallurgy applications and has been able to determine the important parameters for a successful Magnesia for this application. A number of live plant trials have confirmed the results of this testwork and the company is now proceeding to produce this product in commercial quantities at Premier Periclase Ltd., the RHI AG plant in Drogheda, Ireland. This paper will outline the development work conducted by the company and highlight the important chemical and physical properties that make a successful CCM. Much of the research was conducted at the RHI Technology Centre in Leoben, Austria. In addition, a number of external laboratory studies were conducted on behalf of RHI AG. The result of this work has allowed the company to develop a Magnesia product with optimised properties for use in the Cobalt and Nickel hydrometallurgical extraction process.INTRODUCTION Premier Periclase is part of RHI AG, a globally operating supplier of refractory products, systems and services, headquartered in Vienna, Austria. The company produces Magnesia from seawater at its plant in Drogheda, Ireland. While the main focus is on production of refractory grade Dead Burned Magnesia for the steel industry, the plant also produces a number of different grades of Caustic Calcined Magnesia as well as Magnesium Hydroxide products. As part of a major project to diversify the company’s product base, the use of CCM in the Cobalt (Co) & Nickel (Ni) hydrometallurgical extraction industry was investigated. One of the company’s highly reactive grades of Caustic Calcined Magnesia was found to be particularly suitable for this application. In an effort to understand what makes a successful Magnesia for hydrometallurgy the chemical and physical properties of different Magnesia’s used in Co & Ni hydrometallurgy were investigated. This paper and conference presentation outlines the findings of this process."

The extractive industries addition to the International Valuation Standards (IVS) is scheduled for publication in the next edition of the IVS book in January 2005. This will provide guidance for valuation of minerals and petroleum industry assets of all types for all appraisal uses. It will provide asset valuation support to the International Financial Reporting Standards for the stock markets of the world, and a global umbrella standard which can be supplemented for local needs by institutes and regulators. This paper discusses implementation of the IVS within the minerals industry and important issues that the industry should confront.

Clays from the Santa Elena Peninsula, south-east of the Ecuador coast, were investigated with a view to identifying their main mineralogical, physical, chemical and textural characteristics as well as their potential for industrial use as adsorbents. Identified as calcic bentonites, two representative samples from the Tosagua Formation (Oligocene to Lower Miocene) were selected for acid activation trials. The selection criterion was based on the greatest amount of clay fraction (<2 ¦m fraction) associated with the greatest content of montmorillonite. For the activation treatments, HCl and H2SO4 solutions of 4, 6 and 8 N were used in a stirred glass reaction vessel with the clay sample under reflux during four hours at temperatures of 70¦C for HCl and 85¦C for H2SO4. Mineralogical analysis by X-ray diffraction (XRD), chemical analysis by X-ray fluorescence (XRF), differential and gravimetric thermal analysis and measures of density, surface area and porosity indicated the changes occurred in the crystal structure of the montmorillonite. The acid treated clays were utilised in trials of purification and decolourisation of soybean vegetable oil in a ratio of 2:100 (clay/oil) at 90¦C for 30 min, under constant stirring. After centrifugation of the suspension, the wavelength of the bleached oil was measured by UV-visible spectrophotometer and the bleaching capacity of the clays was determined. The best bleaching capacity of the samples was obtained with 6 N H2SO4 acid-activated clays. The bleaching capacity was compared to Tonsil, a commercial acid-activated clay and similar results between them evidenced the potential industrial application of the Ecuadorian clays to bleaching of vegetable oil.

One of the most important problems of reservoir mechanics is the prediction of the behavior of a gas and oil producing reservoir for a variety of production programs. In the absence of a knowledge of the behavior of even idealized systems, it has been difficult, if not impossible, to determine which production program would yield maximum economic recovery. The problem was formulated mathematically many years ago, hilt a solution of the equations had never been obtained because of their extreme complexity. The solution of the problem became possible, however, with the advent of modern computing machines. This paper describes a digital method of solving the problem and discusses some of the results which have been obtained to date. The IBM Type 701 Electronic Data Processing Machines located at IBM's New York Scientific Computing Service were used successfully to perform the computations. The flow of gas and oil through a reservoir can be described mathematically by two second-order, nonlinear partial differential equations which must be solved simultaneously. All derivatives were replaced by finite differences to bring the equations into a form suitable for digital calculations. A number of finite ditference formulations were investigated and one form was found which resulted in stable, convergent solutions. This form was used to obtain .solutions for both radial and linear systems producing by solution gas drive. The results presented in this paper are: (a) saturation profile within the hypothetical reservoir vs. time, (b) pres.strre profile within the hypothetical reservoir vs. time. (c) gas-oil ratio vs. cumulative recovery, and (d) ultimate recovery. The saturation profile clearly shows the effect of critical gas saturation. The saturation near the well-bore drops quickly to the critical gas saturation and remains essentially at that value until the remainder of the reservoir also has dropped to the critical gas saturation. The pressure profile shows a smooth variation of pressure across the reservoir. The gas-oil ratio drops slightly during the early stage of production until the critical gas saturation is reached, rises rapidly from then on and eventually passes through a sharp maximum just before the economic limit of production is reached. For the radial example presented in this paper, the average oil .saturation of the reservoir at a time corresponding to the limit of economic production was 56.5 per cent and the ultimate recovery was 6.86 per cent. The difference between change in saturation and ultimate recovery is caused by .shrinkage of the oil phase. The solution time with the 701 Computer is sufficiently short to permit an economically feasible investigation of the effects of variation of the many parameters which describe an oil reservoir. In particular, the ultimate recovery for various systems can he determined as a function of rock and fluid properties, of well spacing. and of production rate. INTRODUCTION The effective planning for maximum economic depletion of oil reservoirs is one of the major problems confronting oil producers. The most important part of the planning is prediction of the response of the oil reservoir to a particular production program. The Bureau of Mines designed a down-fired refractory-lined combustor that efficiently burned pulverized coal to produce a gas suitable as working fluid for an open-cycle gas turbine. The gas contained relatively little carbon, so the load on the ash-separation equipment was significantly reduced. Moreover, reduction in carbon content of the gas increased the average density of the solid particles making them more amenable to removal by centrifugation. Centrifugal-type separators failed to remove sufficient ash; however, to limit blade wear enough to achieve operating periods generally deemed necessary for commercial practicability.

AREAS in which the surface de-posits consist of organic material -known in some parts of Canada as muskeg and in Europe, more generally, as peat lands -have long been some of the least rewarding of lands of the north temperature zone. Even in such countries as Great Britain, Holland, and Denmark where a good deal of incentive exists to develop all available land, the use of peat land has been negligible except as a source of fuel. Only recently have efforts shown promise in re-claiming these lands for farming or for forestry. Russia has large areas of peat and use is made of it for power generation. The Russian people have also ?developed a variety of machines for handling peat, which would indicate that they are well ahead of the Wes tern World in their technical and physical ability to solve some of the problems. Certainly in Canada, where there are over 500,000 square miles of muskeg, the economic aspects of this problem are important. This is especially true in considering the shifting emphasis to northern development. Not only is muskeg in possession of great stretches of terrain, thereby rendering it useless for agricultural purposes, but it is apparently moving into forested areas and reducing their productivity. In addition, it lies as a great barrier to movement in the search for and development of such natural resources as petroleum, natural gas and minerals generally. This situation has long been recognized in Canada but only recently have organized efforts been made to study the problems and search out ways of overcoming them.

The regional structure of shear and deformation zones in the belt, which is recognisable in plan view on Landsat TM images, is interpreted in terms of a conjugate-shear model. Gold mineralisation is related to this framework at a variety of scales. The principal recurrent structural geometries hosting deposits at mines such as Motapa, Durban, Charliesona, Cecil, Sunace, Turk group, Queens district, How, Peter Pat, Matabele Sheba, Goodenough, Old Nic and Bushtick are associated with shear zones and folds and include conjugate systems (shears, shear intersections, kink sets), side-step systems (en echelon segmentation, duplexes, monoclinal inflections, antiform-synform couplets) and interactions of the two. Linear sections of shear zones are generally poorly mineralised. The same geometries are identifiable on all scales from local to regional, so sections of regional structural lineaments or areas within mines should be prioritised for further investigation or development on the basis of the gold-bearing geometries observed to be dominant locally

"The investigations to improve the process data have been done in order to stabilize the functioning of drying units. The scheme of turnings preparation with centrifuging and subsequent thermal degreasing (tandem) is proposed. To improve the efficiency of the process the scheme of reclamation of the centrifuge fugate is developed with production of oil and service circulating water. Empirical dependences of the turnings temperature influence on the lubricant-coolants content in centrifuging are gained. When the turnings temperature is increased to 80 C the residual content of LC is decreased by 1.5%. The investigations aimed to improve the preparation of non-ferrous turnings have allowed to decrease the melting loss by 15-20%; to stabilize the process of thermal drying of turnings; to decrease sharply (by 60- 70%) the volume of LC combustion products; to reclaim the centrifuge fugate and produce oil and servicecirculating water.Non-ferrous turning and primarily aluminum and copper alloys turning is a stable source of secondary raw materials for metallurgical works.Direct by lubricant-coolants (LC) of various types: synthetic, semi synthetic, oily and emulsions.On the base of investigations concerning various methods of the non-ferrous turning processing the favorable one has been selected taking in to consideration the economy, ecology and quality of the finished product (alloy). Two-stage process is developed. The main idea of the process is the elimination of the lubricant-coolants (LC) to the limit specified in advance. The applied method is centrifuging with subsequent final elimination of LC by thermal method.Constant value of LC content at the inlet of the thermal unit excludes practically the oxidation of metal and as a consequence increases the output by 10 –15 % in metallurgical processing."

Many models have been suggested in the past to obtain a satisfactory fit to flotation data. Of these, first-order kinetics models with a distribution of flotation rate constants are most common. A serious limitation of these models is that type of the distribution must be pre-supposed. Methods to overcome this limitation are discussed and a procedure is suggested for estimating the 'actual' distribution of flotation rate constants. It is demonstrated that the classical first-order model fits the data well when applied to coal flotation in narrow size-specific gravity intervals. When applied to material which is fractionated on the basis of size alone, the use of three parameter models, which were modified from their two parameter analogs such as rectangular, sinusoidal, and triangular, gave most reliable results.

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are investigating the causes and mechanisms of roof failure in underground mines. It is expected that a better understanding of these causes and mechanisms will lead to better layout and support designs that will help prevent accidents and fatalities associated with fall of ground. Two numerical experiments were conducted by NIOSH researchers using the Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua (FLAC) computer modeling program with a strain-softening continuum to simulate fracture zones. Two models, one of a round hole in a plate and one of a rectangular opening, were constructed and boundary conditions were applied to simulate far-field shear. The Particle Flow Code in Two Dimensions (PFC2D) computer program was used to look at the effects of far-field shear in generating fractures around an underground opening, but these models are preliminary until boundary conditions, strengths, and stiffnesses are matched to the FLAC models. Results showed that shear zones propagated from the opposite corners of openings in directions that appeared to be determined by opening shape and far-field stress. Tensile failures also formed and extended away from these shear zones. The consistent direction of shear deformation with respect to far-field shear provides a plausible explanation for preferred directions of shear as seen in geologic environments.

Introduction This paper is an amplification of the paper presented by the writer at the last (1930) Annual Meeting of the Institute (1), and is somewhat in the nature of a progress report upon the introduction of pyrite into the field of Canadian consumption. The burner installed at the plant of the Canada Power & Paper Corporation, St. Maurice division, has been slightly changed in dimensions and has been put into continuous operation during the past year. As predicted, it has been possible to somewhat increase the steam consumption and at the same time decrease the amount of sulphur remaining in the calcine. The grade of the sulphur-dioxide gas produced has been maintained very steadily at 12 per cent, and sufficient experience has been obtained to determine the renewal cost of continuous operation. The object of this paper now is to encourage the development of pyrite, particularly by-product flotation pyrite, as it is shown that there is a very definite field in Canada for this material and that all the previous objections to the use of pyrite have been overcome, and that the use of the material in practice in paper mills has been developed to such a point that the operation of manufacturing the sulphite cooking-liquor is as simple as, or simpler than, the present style of operation with the use of sulphur.

Coal is Australia’s highest export earner and Australia is the world’s largest exporter of coal. With coal now being extracted from deeper reserves under increased risk profile, and in the interest of aiding the stability of coal supplies, Japan is funding a number of safety projects in Australia and China. The CSIRO, Australia’s premiere research organisation with the country’s largest exploration and mining research group, are currently undertaking a jointly funded Japan-Australia safety project at Anglo Coal’s new Grasstree Colliery in central Queensland. The project, entitled Mine Communication and Information for Real-time Risk Analysis, will deliver step-change capabilities in data integration, decision support, gas monitoring, geo-technical monitoring, emergency response and personnel safety to the Grasstree Colliery. Some key activities include: developing and installing underground coal mine Ethernet LAN components, real-time monitoring of gas and geo-technical sensors, MODBUS serial to TCP/IP converters, e-reporting of underground conditions, emergency guidance systems and underground trials of Internet Protocol telephone and video. The project seeks to integrate (in real time) key data sets from the comprehensive and diversified range of propriety system currently in use at mines (ventilation, strata, operations e.g. haulage, pumps, conveyors etc) into a single integrated risk management interface. This interface will filter the data through a rules-based inference engine that will cross reference the various data streams, compare with past events and outcomes associated with the similar historical data and present this “intelligence” to

Additional testing of two prototype instruments for the discrete detec­tion of submicrometer particles in metal and nonmetal underground mines is described. The detectors are designed to utilize properties of submicrometer particles to distinguish between those produced by fires from mine ambient particles primarily resulting from diesel engine exhaust. One instrument is based on the ability to pyrolyze fire produced parti­cles, but not diesel exhaust particles. An alarm is produced when the ratio of pyrolyzed to unpyrolyzed particles exceeds a preset value. The other detector utilizes a continuous flow ion chamber preceded by a denuder to remove charged particles. Discrimination against diesel produced submicrometer particles results because the diesel particles are naturally more highly charged than fire produced particles. In-mine testing was conducted over a period of several months. Both in­struments exhibited an ability to discriminate against diesel exhaust. However, problems with the recording equipment, and with the instruments themselves, due to large ambient dust particles, prevented enough data from being obtained to choose between the two methods. Recommendations to correct the problems are made.
