"Ore is the economic portion of a mineral deposit that can be extracted economically. Hence an ore type is a classification of the ore based on one or more dominant characteristics in order to enable communication between unit operations and/or technical disciplines.In project evaluation, ore types are often defined early based on geological observations by geologists and initial metallurgical testing is based around this classification even though a number of processing options can be under evaluation. However, the geological drivers of performance for each of these processes can be very different and the ore type classification for one process may not be relevant for another. In operations an ore type, as either defined in the project evaluation phase or those that evolve with additional knowledge, is unlikely to provide the knowledge required across all the unit operations. The ore type has a meaning to someone but does not necessarily for all unit operations across the value chain.Geometallurgical or orebody knowledge has evolved through the consideration of multiple processes within the value chain, the improved understanding of variability of process performance within ore types and the effect on the complexity of the mineral extraction processes. Furthermore orebody knowledge has been moving from personal based knowledge and understanding to a more process oriented approach where measurement and spatial and process performance modelling is playing a greater role. Advances in mine planning and scheduling allow for both detailed analysis of the block model and the expected extraction processing attributes across various time scales. This capability of analysing and describing the complexity still requires to be communicated to the various unit operations, which may be beyond the traditional classification of an ore type.The limitations of an ore type and potential alternatives to enable the relevant information to be communicated to the relevant groups are outlined through a number of case examples across the value chain.CITATION:Jackson, J and Young, M F, 2016. This report provides concepts for two automated longwall mining systems; one for operation in a 42 to 57-inch thick section of the Lower Kittanning coal seam, the other in a 57 to 72-inch thick section of the Pittsburgh seam. The Lower Kittanning concept uses a single-drum bidirectional shearer and 500-ton capacity 4-leg chocks and the Pittsburgh concept uses a double-drum shearer with 500-ton shields. Each concept is designed to produce in excess of 2,500 tons of clean coal per shift with a 6-man face crew. The automated longwalls consist of off-the-shelf control system hardware attached to standard longwall equipment. Control hardware includes a control and display console; prime and backup mini-computers; multiplex data transmission, power, and control lines; several remote terminals which serve as interface junctions; and various sensors and actuators located on the longwall equipment. The system can be operated either fully automatically, remotely or manually.

Underground fractured aquifers in the Ernest Henry deposit are to a large extent controlled by deposit scale brittle structures. The underground mine has been subdivided into nine water zones based on hydrogeological characteristics, including conductivity and connectivity, within the mining areas bound by these structures. The nine water zones and the hydrological characteristics of the associated structures are utilised for risk assessing mine development and for targeting diamond drilling dewatering activities. Wireline and conventional underground diamond drilling techniques have been used throughout the network of underground aquifers with the aim of dewatering areas within the mining footprint. These dewatering drilling campaigns have historically been highly successful at lowering aquifer water levels throughout the underground workings. As part of recent mine expansion activities, diamond drilling has intersected high pressure (>507 psi), high temperature (>50°C) and high flow water (>3 L/sec) in as yet unconstrained underground aquifers. Groundwater is typically conducted through rubble and clay rich faults, further hampering progression of drilling. Drilling through fractured aquifers at depth presents both mine planning as well as safety challenges. Recent drill holes have been delayed or abandoned when aquifers hosting this high pressure, high flow water have been intersected, risking mine planning deadlines. Recent technological innovation developed to control groundwater outflows from the diamond drill hole whilst drilling has been trialled at the Ernest Henry Mine. This case study focuses on the utilisation of alternative drill methodologies to allow the current drilling campaign to continue without delay, whilst also improving safety conditions encountered on the drill site.

Underground miners may be exposed to hazardous quantities of toxic gases, such as carbon monoxide (CO), generated from mine fires or explosions. Every underground miner is required to carry a filter self-rescuer (FSR), which when operated will remove CO from the miner's breathing air. In addition, every underground miner must have a self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR) near the worksite that will supply breathing oxygen. In many situations, miners do not know when to don either rescuer since they do not know if there is a fire in the mine, nor do they carry instrumentation necessary for the detection of the toxic, colorless, and odorless fire product CO. If each miner carried a personal CO alarm, which would respond to high concentrations of CO, the miner would then be alerted when to don either the FSR or SCSR and exit the mine. A prototype personal miner's CO alarm called PEMCOAL was developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The PEMCOAL unit is small enough to be carried on a miner's belt, has a flash lamp visual alarm, requires no calibration for use, and uses a chemical sensor that changes color by reaction with trace quantities of CO. The chemical sensor was tested at concentrations of CO from 10 to 1,000 ppm, at temperatures from 5° to 40° C, and with several potential mine gas interferents. The PEMCOAL alarm times were sufficiently fast to warn miners before they are exposed to hazardous quantities of CO.

"INTRODUCTION Mining activities must be safe and profitable. These two requirements influence each other. The purchase and implementation of safety improvements costs money. Injuries and illnesses at mines stop or delay production and may result in additional costs or a loss of profit. Other effects of injuries and illnesses include the negative influence on employee morale, corporate reputation and conflicts with contract partners. Based on this researchers asked the question: are mines with lower rates of injuries and illnesses more profitable than mines with a higher frequencies? One aspect of this research is the evaluation of the safety situation and the measurement of benefits of safety improvements in the German mining industry. In the following paper, this part of the research will be examined. The main aim is the evaluation of injury rates in different German mining sectors and regions in Germany. SELECTION OF GERMAN MINING OPERATIONS The research team decided to focus the study on the salt and potash and the aggregate and industrial minerals mining industries in Germany. These two mining industries are different in the number and size of operators, structure of the industry, pricing and markets. The selection of two different industries adds to the clarity of the evaluation. Salt and potash mining industry The German salt and potash industry is primarily located central Germany. All salt and potash mines in Germany are underground operations. In 2015, the German potash industry employed 8,100 employees and generated a total revenue of 2 billion Euros. German potash reserves include magnesium compounds like kieserite (MgSO4·H2O), in addition to sylvite (KCl) and carnallite (KMgCl3·6(H2O)). The German salt industry employed 2,300 people in 2015 and generated revenue of 800 million Euros (Krueger, 2015) There are seven mining companies with salt and potash operations: esco-european salt company GmbH & Co. KG, K + S Kali GmbH, Saline Luisenhall GmbH, GSES Glückauf Sondershausen Entwicklungs- und Sicherungs-gesellschaft GmbH, Südwestdeutsche Salzwerke AG, Wacker Chemie AG and Südsalz GmbH. In this way, esco – european salt company GmbH & Co. KG is an affiliated company. Esco was founded as a joint venture of K + S and Solvay in 2002, since 2004 K + S is the sole holder (esco - european salt company GmbH & Co. KG, 2016). Likewise, the Südwestdeutsche Salzwerke AG has a controlling interest in Südsalz GmbH (Südsalz GmbH, 2016). Aggregate and industrial minerals mining industry The aggregate mining industry in Germany is comprised of many small mining operations and relevant companies. According to the German Department of Economics (BMWi, 2015), the following industrial materials are classified as aggregates: fluorite, barite, kaolin, quartz and quartz sand, quartzite, silica, loamy and foundry sand, pegmatite sand, shale, clay, bentonite, schistose, limestone and dolomite, gypsum and anhydrite, basaltic lava and lava sand, gravel and split, pebble and silicic sand and peat."

This Code for the Valuation of Mineral Properties (the “CIMVAL Code”) is the result of a review more than a decade after the release in 2003 of the “Standards and Guidelines for Valuation of Mineral Properties” (the "2003 Standards"). The purpose of the review is to update the 2003 Standards to reflect domestic valuation, international valuation, and regulatory developments. The CIMVAL Code was adopted by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy & Petroleum (the "CIM") Council on November 29, 2019. The CIMVAL Code supersedes the 2003 Standards. The 2003 Standards were dated February 2003 and were adopted by the CIM Council on March 9, 2003 as the first comprehensive set of standards for Valuation of Mineral Properties in the Canadian mining industry. The 2003 Standards followed recommendations of the Mining Standards Task Force of the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Ontario Securities Commission, where in its Final Report (January 1999), the CIM was specifically asked to form a committee of valuation practitioners to review and advise on standards for the Valuation of Mineral Properties. The Special Committee on Valuation of Mineral Properties ("CIMVAL") was created on May 5, 1999 with the mandate to recommend standards and guidelines for Valuation of Mineral Properties to be used by the mining industry in general. The CIMVAL Code is limited to the Valuation of Mineral Properties (including any interests therein) and does not cover valuation of corporations or other entities that hold Mineral Properties as assets. The CIMVAL Code does not cover petroleum and related assets. CIMVAL recommends that the CIMVAL Code be followed for all Valuations of Mineral Properties, including those required by securities administrators and stock exchanges. However, when a Valuation is required under the applicable rules of securities administrators or stock exchanges, such rules prevail to the extent of any inconsistency.

Responsible management of cyanide solutions and tailings on gold processing plants worldwide is an important aspect to these operations and is regulated via guidelines provided by the International Cyanide Management Code, an industry initiative designed to minimise cyanide risk to operators and the environment. Here we demonstrate the unprecedented causal relationships surrounding the saline (>14 000 mg/L total dissolved solids - TDS) and hypersaline (>50 000 mg/L TDS) cyanide solutions in gold plant tailings in the Central Goldfields of Western Australia, resulting in zero wildlife mortalities on three sites over the study period of almost one year. Wildlife interaction and ingestion is significantly lower than that experienced at other gold mine sites, with more rapid degradation of weak-acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide within the tailings storage facility (TSF). A rigorous chemical sampling using a novel æminimal accessÆ robotic sampler device and wildlife observation exercise was carried out at two hypersaline mine sites: Barrick Kanowna Belle (BKB) and Gold Fields St Ives (GSI) and one saline site, Barrick Granny Smith (BGS). The data was compared with available reported chemical sampling and wildlife observation data from a previously operational fresh water site (<2000 mg/L TDS) that had experienced wildlife mortalities, Case Study D (CSD). The comprehensive body of work, along with cyanide degradation test work carried out in the laboratory, was analysed via hypothesis development and testing, causation analysis and dynamic chemical modelling. The non-mortality effect on these sites appears to hold over a further four years of routine wildlife and cyanide monitoring by site personnel. This study has helped these three mine sites achieve and maintain full Compliance Cyanide Code status over a significant period while removing the need for operating the detoxification plants they would otherwise have required.CITATION:Adams, M D, Donato, D B, Schulz, R S, Smith, G B, Gibbons, T, Davies, S and Hillier, D, 2013. The changes that are happening in the world of metallurgy, and with it university education, are generational and require generational responses. Some of the key issues facing metallurgical education and ongoing professional training are explored. What will be required of metallurgical engineering professionals in the coming decades? What knowledge and skills will be needed? How to provide the educational and learning pathways, and how to attract smart young people into this profession? These are issues more readily addressed by tertiary institutions in conjunction with industry; perhaps the greater challenges lie in building and maintaining competencies post-graduation. There is a need to establish and maintain a system that supports graduates and enables them to develop further into competent expert engineers able to successfully address complex engineering challenges.

Samples of fine coal refuse were obtained from 11 coal preparation plants throughout the United States. These samples were characterized by ash analysis, particle size, and mineral composition. From the characterization, geographical locations, and the dewatering equipment being used by the plants, five sites were selected for obtaining bulk fine refuse samples. The selected coal preparation plants were using for final dewatering thickeners followed by: a vacuum disc filter, a filter press, a belt press filter, a centrifuge, and a settling pond. None were using thermal drying. The moisture content of the final cake varied from approximately 23% to 50% depending upon the feed material, flocculant addition, and the type of equipment. The filter press gave the lowest moisture content followed by a belt press and then either a centrifuge or vacuum filter. The centrifuge products were all dried to an approximate 5% moisture in a thermal dryer.

JAN. 17-In what appears to be a general spirit of post-Christmas emotional malaise, most adult Americans have bidden farewell to the Forties and turned with no perceptible enthusiasm toward the Fifties. The dying decade had started amid a phoney war which verged on the romantic, stirred the pulse with excitement and seemed far away. A phoney peace dominates the new decade. The romance is no longer there. Nor is the excitement. Nor is the distance. While most of the world preferred to be chronologically correct and hold off for another year before celebrating the demise of the first half of the twentieth century, the United States with true competitive enterprise and a great whirl of words scurried into the second half a year early. This undue haste might perhaps have been dictated unconsciously by a yearning for the pattern of history to be repeated. For many centuries, ever since Roman times, the second half of most centuries tended to be far more tranquil than the first half. In Washington, Mr. Truman got on both sides of the mid-century line with all the aplomb of a good politician. He told Congress early in January that "the state of the Union continues to be good," as it nears "the midpoint of the twentieth century." Later he spoke of moving forward into the second half of the century. He promised an infinitely better life for everyone, whichever side of the mid-century line, and reaffirmed his prescription toward that end: assistance for small businesses; more houses for the middle-income groups; tougher anti-monopoly laws, retention of rent controls; development of natural resources; better insurance against the hazards of old age, idleness and unemployment; better medical care and education, civil rights legislation; new labor relations law and production payments to support farm incomes. All this was to be coupled with suggestions on how to balance the budget. The bloody and confusing 1940's had brought to most men's minds a fear of the future such as they had not known for centuries, and Mr. Truman's objective is to temper that fear. Only time will tell whether the terminal point of such a philosophy would or would not belie the old English proverb citing inability to both eat and have a cake. Brave words to the contrary, the national budget persisted in sliding off into the red. The smell of further inflation was equally persistent. And just to impart a little more zip to the trend, the American Federation of Labor announced its intention of seeking "substantial" and "large" wage increases this year. The AFL forewarns of a business slump after June and a 10¢ an hr wage in¬crease for each worker "will be enough to reverse the prospective downward trend and start a rise." Thus it goes-"the way to halt a drop in demand for labor is to raise the price of labor." Elsewhere in the harassed world, beleagured individualists in New York achieved a local triumph of sorts for one of the freedoms denied by the Soviet and Nazi systems-the right of escape, some escape at least, from the servitude to decibels. Grand Central Station weakened perceptibly at Christmas on its 5-min commercials and bore down heavily on "Hark, The Herald Angels Sing," and on New Year's Day capitulated entirely by abandoning the broadcasting of canned music and slugs of advertising slogans. In Europe, M. Bidault's Assembly majority fell away and newspaper accounts of the incredible monstrosities of political trials beyond the iron curtain were supplanted by headlines marking the birth of Princess Yasmin. The latter was surrounded by Byzantine splendor but otherwise showed no apparent deviation from the accepted norm. In Western Germany, Dr. Adenauer began to speak up more boldly, and the whole fabric of Allied policy towards the defeated enemy further dossolved under the impact of rivalry with the Russians. In the Far East both the Americans and British seem somewhat embarrassed by Chiang Kai-shek's refusal to lie down. Dual thinking regarding the "squalid and useless struggle in the China seas" is such that newspapers give sympathetic accounts to an American ship running supplies to the Communists at Shanghai while calling for help for the recognized Chinese government in Formosa. And with Britain recognizing Communist China they may well have to team up with Russia against the United States to kick the Chinese representative off the UNO Security Council, the Far Eastern Commission and the Allied Council in Tokyo. Far Eastern policy has never been a bipartisan matter and as General Chiang retreated to his final redoubts in Formosa and Hainan, a number of Republicans pecked away at Administration lassitude. Senator Smith advocated the occupation of Formosa and Messrs. Hoover and Taft asked for use of the Navy. Mr. Acheson has stood firm, however, against military aid. None the less, a study will be made of the Generalissimo's chances. Mr. Truman has a private purse of $75 million for the Far East and some $94 million in frozen ECA funds. Mr. Truman will likely trade some of this money for support of new Marshall plan appropriations, always mindful, of course, of Mr. Acheson's plan to drive a wedge between the Chinese and Moscow, and his wish to avoid any revival of imperialist nightmares throughout the Orient. Research conducted into backfill drainage at Mount Isa Mines since 1992 is described. Piping in draining backfilled stopes has been the primary cause of bulkhead failures and emphasis is placed on research into the piping mechanism. Laboratory and in situ tests aimed at understanding the piping mechanism have been conducted and the results are presented. A case history of piping in a draining bench stope fill mass is described and a technique for reducing the potential for bulkhead failures in bench stopes is presented. Hydraulic fill is produced by standard cycloning of tailings and the overflow (reject material) is sent to thickeners prior to placement in the tailings dams. Research into the partial introduction of thickener underflow into the backfill system and its influence on backfill drainage is also described.

The Bureau of Mines has investigated the recovery of alumina by hydrochloric acid leaching of calcined kaolinitic clay . Bench- scale studies indicated that horizontal belt filtration was a pprraaccttiiccaall method for separating the siliceous residue from aluminum chloride liquor generated in the leaching step . Miniplant -scale continuous testing was performed to evaluate the filter circuits and to compare filtration response of different calcined kaolin feed materials and of different agitatorbaffle designs in the leaching reactors . Soluble alumina recovery with a single filter ranged from 94 pct with minus 10 -mesh feed more than 96 pct with minus 35-mesh or misted feed . Process advantages were confirmed for the calcined misted kaolin feed material prepared by a Bureau-developed misting process . With two filters in series , an overall filtration rate of 100 lb solids /hr.ft - 2 of filter area was attained with a soluble alumina recovery of more than 99 pct . More than 99.5 pct alumina recovery was obtained with a thickener and a two - filter circuit for either the minus 35-mesh or the misted feed . Modifications in leaching reactor design made to decrease particle- toparticle attrition were successful and significantly increased filtration rates and decreased flocculant requirements .

The Bureau of Mines has devised and demonstrated a process for recovering Ni and Co from low-grade domestic laterites. The process consists of four major steps: (1) reduction roast, (2) ammoniacal leach, (3) solvent extraction, and (4) electrowinning. Several solid-liquid separation steps are required that affect the economics of the overall pro-cess. In this study, two techniques for solid-liquid separation, centrifugation and thickening, were investigated. This report presents the results of (1) laboratory and pilot plant studies to determine parameters for sizing centrifuges and thickeners and (2) an economic study of the two techniques, based on the requirements of a commercial-size (5,OOO-tpd) laterite processing plant. Sizing and other equipment-related recommendations, based on data from the Bureau's studies, were obtained from commercial manufacturers. The costs of thickening and centrifugation, including all the unit operations affected, were determined by the Bureau's process evaluation group. The total operating costs ~or separation using the two techniques (including depreciation on the capital cost of equipment) were found to be quite close: $17.26 per ton of laterite for centrifugation and $18.15 per ton of laterite for thickening. For centrifugal separation, the greatest cost was found to be the initial capital cost for the separation equipment; using thickeners, the greatest cost was for re-agent recovery.

Silver and gold bearing ore from the Troy Resources NL Casposo Gold-Silver Project, located within the San Juan Province of Argentina contains a complex mix of gold, silver, electrum and silver sulphides in the ore. Casposo is a typical low sulphidation epithermal style gold–silver deposit where mineralisation is hosted within rhyolite – andesite flows and breccias. Veins are typically banded quartz–chalcedony colloform - crustiform banded with quartz - carbonate infill. Mineralisation is associated with an assemblage consisting of quartz, chalcedony, adularia, calcite, illite, sericite and trace sulphides. Gold and silver occur as electrum, native silver, sulfosalts and silver sulphides. This paper presents a case study that describes the process selection, development and engineering of a tailored process plant for the recovery of gold and silver from this ore.The original feasibility study, modelling, metallurgical testwork and engineering studies are outlined. The final flowsheet was based on minimising capital cost, operability, recovery and minimising technical risk.The process flowsheet uses the traditional Merrill Crowe route because of the high silver to gold ratio in the feed and achieves maximum gold and silver recovery while providing a common facility for future ore body treatment.

Canada is a world class producer and exporter of minerals and mineral products. It is also a major exporter of minerals. Canadian open pits are highly mechanized and use state of the art equipment and support technology. During the past few years significant productivity improvements have been achieved by taking advantage of larger equipment; in pit crushing and conveying; truck dispatch systems and electronic management tools. The most recent developments in Canadian Open-pit Mining are related to hydraulic transportation and the application of Global Positioning Systems. Mine planning is computerized; environmental issues are dealt with in all phases of planning; equipment modifications are pursued with vigor to keep them functioning in the hostile Canadian North.

No processo de lingotamento contínuo em uma Aciaria, existe o distribuidor, este a princípio exercia apenas a função de reservatório intermediário do aço líquido, ficando entre a panela e o molde, distribuindo o fluxo aos veios para que se tenha uma solidificação mais controlada. Atualmente o distribuidor exerce outras funções, como a melhoria na limpidez do aço. Um dos mecanismos utilizados para que haja essa melhoria no distribuidor, é o difusor de argônio. Este mecanismo ocorre através de uma cortina de gás inerte com capacidade de flotação de inclusões de classificações endógenas e/ou exógenas. Esse trabalho tem como objetivo testar e comparar o desenvolvimento do difusor de argônio e identificar sua eficiência na limpidez do aço. A técnica adotada para determinação da eficácia do difusor foi através da retirada de amostras no distribuidor e molde durante o processo de lingotamento contínuo, essas amostras foram analisadas no laboratório para que fosse determinada através de métodos indiretos, a medição de alumínio total. Constatou-se que os tipos de aço usados nos testes, tem capacidade de chegar ao lingotamento contínuo já com altos teores de limpidez, mas, mesmo assim, a quantidade de inclusões de alumina observada no molde apresentase bem mais baixa no veio com difusor de argônio.

This report examines the feasibility of Employee Assistance Plans for the coal industry. Three issues are examined in detail. First, the prevalence of off-the-job factors such as alcoholism, drug abuse, and marital problems are examined in a sample of miners from the eastern, midwestern, and western underground coal fields. Then data were presented that examined the link between these off-the-job factors and behaviors critical to the mines such as absenteeism and turnover. Lastly, we examined the effectiveness of the major Employee Assistance Program in underground coal mining--the HELP Program. The report contains recommendations on whether coal mining companies should implement these programs and how these programs should be designed.
