Sensor-based bulk ore sorting is a form of preconcentration that autonomously measures and physically separates discrete bulk ‘pods’ of run of mine (‘ROM’) or primary crushed material. This case study examines the results of a full scale bulk ore sorting trial undertaken at Cozamin mine in Zacatecas, Mexico in 2019. The bulk ore sorting plant comprised primarily of a mobile jaw crusher, fixed conveyor, MR analyser, and diverter gate. Results of the trial demonstrate that bulk ore sorting could deliver a net improvement in copper metal fed to the processing plant of 6-8 per cent within an equal gross tonnage of ore. Copper metal increases were the result of improvements in mining recovery, where valuable mineralisation is recovered from marginal or sub-grade material that would otherwise be discarded as waste or stockpiled as low-grade. The increase in mining recovery more than compensates for metal losses suffered in the bulk ore sorting plant.

The growing demand for energy combined with the need to protect and preserve the environment have become prime considerations in the design of efficient coal handling ports and their associated stockpiles. The transportation system is analogous to a connected chain which originates at the mines and terminates at steel mills or power plants, in which the port and the stockpile reserves are a vital link. Railroad transportation costs can be minimized by rapid discharge of the cars which, in turn, requires that an adequate stockpile system be available. Ocean transport costs can be minimized by having an efficient high capacity ship loading system and sufficient quantities of coal on hand -all of which also requires an efficient stockpile system to meet shipping demands. The connector between the two modes of transportation, therefore, is the port stockyard. It is here at the interface that optimization of land utilization and materials handling equipment results in a total transportation chain that can operate as a smooth efficient system. Multiple origins of coal require the simultaneous handling of large quantities of coal of many grades. Railroad transportation logistics often limit and define the incoming arrival patterns and limited rolling stock often require priority treatment for railroad operations. The physical limitations of prime ocean frontage require that coal stockpiles be built close to residential or industrial areas which entail strict environmental controls. Large capacity, enclosed coal stockpiles for ocean shipping have not yet been considered feasible but may be forthcoming in the near future. Several have been analyzed.

The thematic mapper (TM) aboard Landsat II records image data at seven wavelength intervals or bands. Three record the visible region; three record reflected IR energy. A false color image combining bands 7, 4 and 2 rendered as red, green and blue respectively provides maximum discrimination of rock types in arid regions. Structural analyses and interpretation defines regional structures, large volcano-tectonic features intrusive complexes, all which localize mineralization. Special digital processing using the ratio: Band 3 / Band 1 can identify limonites and other iron minerals. The ratio: Band 5/ Band 7 identifies clays and alunite. These ratio images show features and patterns of hydrothermal mineral systems: ?patterns of sulfide and alteration zoning in large porphyry systems, and zones of strong silica, quartz-alunite-illite, and pyrite-sericite in epithermal centers. Thus, digitally processed Landsat TM images are a cost effective and rapid means to recognize altered areas and define targets for large mineralized systems.

METALLURGICAL coke and the by-products of the carbonization of coal continue in strong demand. Nearly 500 new by-product ovens were constructed in 1943. Output of by-product coke in the first ten months of the year was about 2 1/2 percent higher than in the corresponding period of 1942, but beehive production remained on approximately the same level as last year and constituted about 11 per cent of the total coke output.

Thermal and metallurgical coal mining in Queensland has resulted in mines which contain voids due to open cut mining. While there are several proposals for greenfield coalmines or expansions to existing operations, many existing open cut coalmines are reaching maturity and most will leave one or more residual voids in place. The rehabilitation of mine voids is challenging. Water held in voids will evaporate over time leaving solutes to concentrate. This is likely to lead to poor water quality with limited practical use. The most basic practices to rehabilitate voids have historically involved stabilising the high and low walls, bunding to provide flood protection, and preventing public access. Regulatory reforms for mine rehabilitation were introduced in Queensland as part of the Mineral and Energy Resources (Financial Provisioning) Act 2018, and aimed to strengthen progressive rehabilitation planning, limit risks to the environment and improve outcomes for local and regional communities. Under the reforms, the goal for rehabilitation of voids is to achieve a safe, stable, and non-polluting landform, which can sustain a post-mining land use (PMLU). The reforms also introduced a requirement to describe rehabilitation of mined land in Progressive Rehabilitation and Closure (PRC) plans, replacing the description of such plans in Environmental Authorities (EAs). The reforms are not retrospective and recognise historic approvals for voids, meaning established voids will remain in the landscape as non-use management areas (NUMAs). A helicopter-mounted lake-sediment and lake-water survey was carried out over Grenville rooks in the Renfrew area (parts of Renfrew and Lanark counties) during four days of October, 1975. In the course of this survey. 1150 square kilometers were covered, with 246 lake-sediment and 276 lake -water samples collected from every body of water on which the helicopter could land. Sample sites, which averaged one per 4.6 square kilometers, included lakes, ponds, beaver ponds, swamps and marshes. Lake-sediment samples were taken using a G.S.C. sampler. Waters were collected directly into polyethylene bottles. At each sample site , surface and bottom-water pH, dissolved oxygen content, conductivity and temperature were measured using a Martel. Water Quality Analyzer. The lake sediments were air dried and then ball milled to pass a minus 80-mesh sieve. Lake sediments were analyzed for U by delayed neutron activation and for Mo, Cu, Zn, Pb, Fe, Mn, Ni and Co by atomic absorption techniques. The organic content of the sediments was determined by loss on ignition at 450 °C. Lake waters were acidified with nitric acid on the day of collection. The U content of the water s was determined by fluorometry; the Cu, Zn, Pb, Fe, Mn , Ni and Co contents of the waters were determined by solvent extraction - atomic absorption techniques. A close relationship was found between bodies of granitic, syenitic and pegmatitic bedrock and elevated U levels in the lake sediments. The Hurd Lake and White Lake granitic intrusive were encompassed by an annulus of higher U activity. Field inspection revealed that the U concentrations occur within a zone which may represent a contact metamorphic aureole. Within these complexes, anomalous concentrations of U appear to be associated with Mo. Information derived from the lake-water data reinforces the geochemical distributions outlined by the lake-sediment survey . This survey was carried out in order to develop optimum sampling and analytical procedures for geochemical reconnaissance of the Grenville Province that may be carried out under the auspices of the Uranium Reconnaissance Program.

A statistically designed pot grate- kiln test program was conducted to determine the agglomeration process variables necessary for increasing the low temperature disintegration resistance (LTD) and reducibility (R40) of magnetite-based Empire acid pellets. The ASTM tumble index and compression strength were to be maintained at an acceptable level. Six process variables, bentonite addition level, preheat time and temperature, firing time and temperature, and cooling rate, were investigated within the constraints of the Empire plant. The bentonite addition level and firing temperature had the largest effect on pellet properties. The results of this program were verified during a pl ant trial. The target firing temperature at the Empire Plant has been decreased for increasing the LTD and R40 of commercially produced Empire pellets

"Research projects towards developing a sound understanding of the factors controlling the performance of gravity thickeners have been conducted by the AJ Parker Cooperative Research Centre for Hydrometallurgy since 1988 through AMIRA International. The current phase of this work, the three year P266D “Improving Thickener Technology” project, has 27 sponsors comprising mineral processing companies, reagent suppliers and thickener manufacturers.These projects have resulted in the development of a range of tools and techniques to address flocculation, thickening and associated dewatering issues. A number of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models have been developed to predict likely full-scale thickener performance under various process conditions, based upon a knowledge of thickener design, plant flows and assessment of the flocculation behaviour of the feed slurry. At the same time, various laboratory and plant studies have been used to quantify important thickener processes, and to provide validation of the CFD models. These numerical and experimental capabilities have been applied to various thickener issues across a broad range of mineral processing operations, leading to significant process improvements and substantial financial benefits.This paper presents an overview of the work conducted during these projects, focussing on the research tools, the nature of the information that has been gained and the implications for thickener performance."

A vital aspect of environmental impact assessment for surface mining operations is the determination of potential effects on water resources. This topic has been the subject of much recent concern, controversy and legislation. As increasing data become available regarding the types of hydrologic effects that may be anticipated, methods for safe guarding our water resources can be refined. In view of our current energy situation, the need to develop coal re- sources in a timely and economic manner is apparent. The challenge to the mining industry is to develop these resources in a manner that is also compatible with the beneficial use of water resources in mining regions. For this reason, thorough evaluation of the hydrology of potential mining areas in consideration of proposed mining processes and relevant legal criteria is essential. While pre-mining hydrologic investigations often suggest generalized potential effects, a more reliable method for evaluating specific potential effects is to establish and maintain a hydrologic monitoring program. Such a program must be carefully designed to suit the specific project and its location. This paper describes an approach for selection of criteria for designing a monitoring program for a proposed coal surface mining operation and gasification plant in southwest North Dakota. Woodward-Clyde Consultants (WCC), recently prepared an environ- mental impact report for the ANG Coal Gasification Company (ANG), a subsidiary of the American Natural Gas Company. The mining will be carried out by The North American Coal Corporation (NACCO). Preparation of the report provided the opportunity for the development of a sensitive and economical monitoring program which would function as a baseline hydrological data gathering network as well as act an an early detection system for hydrologic effects of the proposed mining.

"IntroductionLaboratory and industrial grinding tests have shown that the process of size reduction of metal containing ores can be significantly influenced by chemicals added to the slurry being ground.,The terms grinding aid or grinding additive refer to a substance which, when mixed into the mill contents, causes an increase in the rate of size reduction. The increased rate can be used to grind a higher feed rate to the desired product size or it can be used to produce a finer product size at a fixed rate. Whether the use of a grinding aid is justified in any given situation depends on the cost of the substance versus the improvement of output or product quality obtained with its use.A wide variety of grinding additive mechanisms have been suggested in the general mining literature (1,2,3,4,5,6,7). The prevention of particle agglomeration, slurry cushioning of grinding media impact, grinding media coating, changing the strength of macro porous rocks, and chemical adsorption on flaw surfaces to change bonding forces and surface energy have all been suggested. More recently, some grinding additive work has been carried out (8,9,10,11) which suggests that the use of efficient chemicals to control the fluidity of dense slurries is a viable economic approach to achieve improved grinding rates. These increased grinding rates are achieved with no increase in power to the grinding mills and apparently with no increase in media consumption costs. Unlike much of the previous work with grinding additives, this recent work is accompanied by a rather complete engineering characterization and prediction of performance capability. The chemicals involved were chosen so as to efficiently control the viscosities of slurries under conditions of high shear yet not adversely affecting flotation, flocculation, and other downstream surface chemistry operations."

In the current study, bio-oxidation tests were carried out in shaking flasks with a flotation concentrate containing the sulphides pyrite, arsenopyrite and gudmidite. The tests were performed with mesophilic microorganisms (At. ferrooxidans) at 30 °C and also with the moderate thermophile S. thermosulfidooxidans, at 50 °C. The effects of (i) previous adaptation of the microorganisms to the concentrate, (ii) ferrous iron concentration and (iii) pulp density (2%, 4% and 6% (w/v)) on the dissolution of the sulphide were studied through arsenic extractions. S. thermosulfidooxidans was more sensitive to the pulp density in comparison to At. ferrooxidans as a reduction in sulphide oxidation was observed with the increase in the solid content to 6%. Therefore, the mesophilic strain was selected for further work, which comprised a rolling bottle experiment at 10% solids. After 40 days of bio-oxidation, the solid material was subjected to cyanidation, which revealed 85% gold extraction as compared to 21% from the original concentrate. The antimony sulphide grains in the bio-oxidized product showed similarity to what was observed in the original sample, suggesting such particles were not susceptible to the bio-oxidation process.

This eight-chapter document is the second volume of a two-volume report that presents a comprehensive outline of coal-mine electrical power systems from theory to practice. Together, the two volumes contain the vital aspects that go into planning and designing a mine power system. Building upon Volume I, the subject of protective equipment and relaying starts Volume II, first as an introduction in Chapter 8, then by a treatment of device selection in Chapter 9. Chapter 10 continues system protection in terms of transients and overvoltages. Chapter 11 describes the design of major power equipment, including power centers, switchhouses, and substations. Solid-state applications in mining are given in Chapter 12, and batteries and battery charging are discussed in Chapter 13. Chapter 14 covers electrical-equipment in hazardous locations of mining operations. The report concludes with Chapter 15, a discussion of electrical maintenance as well as some specific mine electrical problems. Information on surface and underground use is included in all these chapters. An index finishes the documentation and is cross-referenced to both report volumes.

Design and construction of deep foundations and basements is increasingly becoming more complex, as the density and frequency of urban development increases. This growth brings various associated challenges in the form of design considerations and construction challenges. This paper discusses some of the challenges routinely encountered as well as some specific complications in this area, based on author’s experience gained through exposure as specialist contractor (designer), consultant and specialist consultant, along with some information on how these challenges were overcome. The paper highlights some of the key aspects of design coordination and importance of having an awareness of the overall perspective. Examples will be used to illustrate practical problems and the approaches used to respond.

Introduction Froth flotation is one of the most common unit engineering operations in use today. Its aim is to upgrade the quality of coal by removing ash/pyrite and separating selected minerals from undesired gangue materials. Flotation has been successfully practiced at the industrial scale for more than 50 years. Its use is increasing due to the ever decreasing feed grades of the coals and minerals being processed. Flotation has also shown itself to be a flexible process that lends itself well to many solid/solid separations. Thus, with surprisingly little equipment modification, separations can involve very different particle sizes and densities, and relative weight ratios of materials to be separated. In addition, the flotation process is economic, especially when compared to size reduction, its associated precursor process. Flotation also lends itself to continuous operations with a given equipment configuration. The operation must exhibit an ability to vary feed rate of solid to the process by as much as 50% without a total collapse of separating efficiency. In addition, the mechanical flotation cell is scaleable from 2.8 to 57 or 85 m3 (100 to 2000 or 3000 cu ft) with surprising ease relative to other unit engineering operations over the same relative size increase. The separating medium used is water. Most of the chemicals required - pH regulators, frothers, collectors, activators, and depressants - are all relatively inexpensive and common. They are not usually used in large quantities. Froth flotation is certainly one of the most versatile and forgiving unit operations in the chemical, mining, and agricultural industries. The problem with the industrial flotation process is that it is fairly easy to get reasonable results and relatively difficult to get excellent results. Why is it so difficult to fine tune the froth flotation process? There are some obvious reasons and a few not-so-obvious factors. The obvious category would certainly contain the tendency of natural feed materials (ores and raw coals) to have variable physical, metallurgical, and surface properties. This occurs even when special care is taken to minimize such differences with blending. There is another obvious reason for difficulty. An inherent broadness of the feed particle size range to flotation results from using any of the common industrial-scalefine grinding devices - ball-, rod-, or autogenous mills. Research has been done into the chemical reagent and equipment aspects of flotation. It has shown strong interactions (limitations) of chemical reagents and equipment on larger and smaller particles. The point is that current flotation practice works best on average- or medium-sized feed particles. The greater the amount of large or small particles, or of both large and small, the more difficult it is to achieve excellent flotation results. Other reasonably obvious factors include: • variations in mineral type and liberation sizes; • water chemistry variations such as those involving Ca", C03, or Fe", or various soluble metal cations; • the presence of stray organic materials such as returning soluble reagents or partially degraded reagents in reuse water; • the lack of reliable on-line instrumentation for monitoring and control; • frequent equipment malfunctions of all types; • excessive feed rates for installed plant capacity; • poor operator interaction with the process; and • poor reagent dosage control. There are less obvious, but real limitations to flotation. These are inherent in the design and operating characteristics of the most common cell design in use today - the mechanical flotation cell. Individual performance attributes of the chemical reagents used, along with their manner of use, also carry limitations. The bulk of this paper will deal with chemical reagents and their use. Chemical reagents In 1979, the author and his co-workers were asked to invent and implement, at the industrial scale, new flotation reagent chemistry. After reviewing some of the literature (Sutherland and Wark, 1955; Klassen and Mokrousov, 1959; M. Fuerstenau, 1962; D. Fuerstenau, 1976; and Leja, 1982), a series of carefully controlled plant scale tests were set up. These tests were designed to understand existing reagent scale-up from the laboratory to the plant. They were to quantify at the plant level the effect of some of the more important, controllable chemical reagent factors (frother and collector type, frother and collector dosage, pH effects). Many contributors have added to the fund of knowledge in the basic sciences related to mineral dressing during the past year. During 1964, the French edition of the Proceedings of the VIth International Mineral Processing Congress together with discussions was printed. Also, complete Preprints of papers delivered at the VIIth IMPC were published in September1. Over a third of the papers presented at VIIth IMPC dealt with fundamentals. COMMINUTION It has been postulated by Ponceleta that flaws need not exist before a stress is applied but rather the flaws are created at the tip of a propagating crack at a stress well below the theoretical breaking stress.

Waste water produced from coal preparation plants posses several problems during dewatering and solid/liquid separation. The natural sedimentation rate of the particles present in colloidal and finely divided suspended form is very slow. Flocculation technology is being applied in most of the coal washeries to recover water which is being accomplished through the use of inorganic salts, polymeric flocculants or both depending on the chemical and physical characteristics of the pollutants present in the waste water. The waste tailing water from Piperware coal preparation plant, Central Coalfield Limited (CCL), India, is highly turbid containing ~ 16000 NTU with negative surface charge in the pH range of 2 to 10. Polymeric flocculants in conjunction with fine magnetite is investigated to achieve faster settling rate with lowest level of water turbidity. The conditions affecting the interaction between the reagents and the turbid particles present in the tailings water are investigated. It is possible to bring down the turbidity of the water to < 90 NTU from very high turbid tailing water by using 2 mg/L of the polymeric flocculent in combination with 0.1 g/L of magnetite at natural pH of the tailing slurry. It has been found that finely divided positively charged magnetite particles in combination with the flocculent selectively coat the negatively charged impurities present in water and thereby increase the settling rate under the influence of a magnetic field.

For many years the Federal Bureau of Mines-in cooperation with other agencies-has been making investigations and compiling and publishing reports and statistics on accidents in the various branches of the mineral industry.4 Its assistance has been enlisted also in health, safety, and ventilation problems&apos; incident to the driving of many large tunnels in the United States in recent years. As part of this work the Bureau has compiled considerable statistical and other information on accident experience in the tunneling branch of the heavy-construction industry. It has always been difficult to obtain up-to-date information on tunneling methods and tunnel accidents. Published accounts of tun¬nel construction furnish much interesting material of engineering, historical, or fiscal value, but usually little or no attempt is made to discuss and critically analyze the means taken to preserve the health and life of employees.

Optimisation projects are regularly undertaken without knowing the root cause of an issue. It is all well and good to trial a multitude of flotation reagents, change the operating characteristics of your flotation cells, or add more media into your ball mills, but time and again, root cause analysis traces issues back to the performance of hydrocyclones. In JKTech&#39;s experience, hydrocyclones are poorly operated and maintained (in both primary grinding and regrind circuits), exacerbating issues that many operations commonly experience.Recent case studies are presented where JKTech has been engaged to improve the process only to discover that the hydrocyclones were the main issue. At one operation it was found that the hydrocyclone feed density gauge was reading significantly lower to the actual density. Following re-calibration of the gauge, and with further improvement of cyclone operational and design parameters using JKSimMet, a significantly sharper efficiency curve was achieved. This resulted in improvements to downstream recoveries while alleviating pumping capacities that were previously constrained by fines and water caught up in recirculating loads.Several other case studies are presented which may seem to be relatively basic, but many basics seem to be getting lost in the day-to-day responsibilities of the modern plant metallurgist. Simple fixes to hydrocyclones can result in significant production increases, but more focus is needed in monitoring these to sustain the benefits.CITATION:Wong, B and Vizcarra, T G, 2018. This Bureau of Mines report describes a process for recovering chromium and other metals from superalloy scrap. Laboratory-scale experiments were conducted to test a complex flowsheet utilizing a wide range of extractive metallurgical operations. The novel basis for the process is the fonnation of a sulfide matte in which chromium is concentrated in a discrete chromium sulfide phase. Mineral processing and hydrometallurgical procedures are used to separate chromium sulfide from the other matte constituents. The products of the process are a chromium-nickel alloy suitable for reuse in the superalloy industry, electrolytic nickel, electrolytic cobalt, and iron-molybdenum residue. Recovery of the principal elements contained in the scrap is chromium--93 percent, nickel--99 percent, cobalt--96 percent, and molybdenum--92 percent.
