A preliminary investigation has been conducted to determine the conditions for the precipitation of phosphate from the liquor produced after a hydrochloric acid pre-leach and rare-earth recovery from a rare earth containing fluorapatite concentrate from the Nolans rare earth deposit in the Northern Territory of Australia. The results show that at 50oC the phosphate can be precipitated in two stages using limestone to produce a Stage 1 precipitate containing most of the impurities including iron (94%), aluminium (92%), fluoride (98%), uranium (84%) and thorium (94%), followed by a relatively pure Stage 2 dicalcium phosphate precipitate (DCP) containing only 0.05% Fe, 0.05% Al, 0.1% F, 0.01% U, and <0.01% Th. The initial Stage 1 precipitate contained about 25% of the phosphate while the remaining 75% reported to the Stage 2 phosphate precipitate. Depending on the required radioactivity specifications, the amount of phosphate in the Stage 1 precipitate could be reduced. Reagent requirements were 11.4 kg limestone (as pure CaCO3) per cubic metre of solution for the Stage 1 precipitate and 39.7 kg limestone (as pure CaCO3) per cubic metre for Stage 2. The analysis of radionuclide balance indicated that radionuclides deported mainly to the final filtrate (86.4%) compared to Stage 1 precipitate (5.4%) and Stage 2 precipitate (8.2%). Settling and pressure filtration tests indicated the precipitates were both readily settled and filtered. The final moisture contents of the Stage 1 and Stage 2 precipitates were 62.5% and 49.3%, respectively.

Introduction In the Twentieth Annual Report of the Mcintyre Porcupine Mines, Limited, for the year ending March 31st, 1932, the General Manager, Mr. R. J. Ennis, said: "During the period under review, the plans outlined in last year&apos;s report have been completed, and all operations have been centralized in the new plant adjacent to No. 11 shaft. The new mill went into operation on May 27th and attained its rated capacity of 2,000 tons per day on November 15th. The new shops, warehouse, change-house, and general offices were occupied on December 1st, consummating the change from the old to the new plant ... "Silicosis is now definitely recognized as an industrial disease, and progresses rapidly when associated with tuberculosis. In an effort to combat its prevalence and progress, the new change-house was designed to build up the men&apos;s resistance to this and other forms of disease. It provides for a complete change from underground to street clothing, with a shower bath and solarium treatment in the interval. &apos;Unfortunately, in almost every goldmine, a very small percentage of the work-men are not adverse to taking some of the high-grade ore for their own purpose. This, in turn, tends to cast suspicion upon the honourable as well as the dishonorable employees. The new change-house routine discourages this practice and eliminates unjust suspicion, to the satisfaction of all concerned with the Company&apos;s operations".

Surface coal operations in which mining activities are conducted above old underground workings experience hot holes after drilling. In a coal mine, hot holes are defined as shot holes, which after being drilled have an in-hole ambient temperature of 40°C or above or show a temperature increase of 3°C or more during monitoring. Hot holes and other cavities, such as cracks, pose health and safety risks to workers, such as exposure to hot air and high concentrations of noxious gases released from these holes. In addition, workers may be exposed to premature detonation of explosives caused by in-hole temperature increases and chemical reactions. To this end, Coaltech Research Association commissioned a project to develop a Best Practice Guideline for the management of hot holes. This paper is a compilation of the activities conducted in the development of the Best Practice Guideline between 2021 and 2022. The activities included a review of standard operating procedures and hot-hole temperature-measuring and -monitoring devices, and the assessment of current hot-hole procedures at selected mines. The results indicated that management of hot holes requires a focus on pre-emptive risk assessment of mining blocks, identification of hot holes using the correct temperature-measuring devices, and continuous monitoring of hot holes from the time of drilling until just before blasting. Hot-hole management accessories, such as polyvinyl chloride sleeves, were found to be effective in insulating the hot-hole emulsion from the rock mass temperature, thus preventing the potential for premature detonation.

Underground and opencast coal mining has been ongoing since 1896 on the Stockton Plateau, West Coast, New Zealand. Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) from historic and current mine workings has had an adverse environmental impact on the surrounding aquatic environment. The two main catchments affected by ARD are those of the Mangatini and St Patrick streams. These catchments flow into the Lower Ngakawau River, which holds high amenity value for the local community. Water quality targets set by Solid Energy for 2010 in the Ngakawau River include increased pH and clarity and a decrease in certain dissolved metals. &nbsp; At-source ARD minimisation options are the first stage in mitigating the effects of mining acid forming rocks and reducing acid loads in the Mangatini and St Patrick stream catchments. ARD minimisation techniques reduce the quantity of acidity generated and thus reduces the treatment required. Treatment will be required for many years at Stockton due to current and historical acid formation. This paper looks at the treatment options that Solid Energy has been investigating including limestone leach beds, engineered wetlands, oxic limestone drains, and limestone dosing of catchment drainage. Particular focus is given to fine limestone dosing of the Mangatini stream and subsequent water quality improvements.

The long-term supply of nickel to society was assessed with theWORLD7 model for the global nickel cycle, using new estimates of nickel reserves and resources, indicating that the best estimate of the ultimately recoverable resources for nickel is in the range of 650–720 million ton. This is significantly larger than earlier estimates. The extractable amounts were stratified by extraction cost and ore grade in the model, making them extractable only after price increases and cost reductions. The model simulated extraction, supply, ore grades, and market prices. The assessment predicts future scarcity and supply problems after 2100 for nickel. The model reconstructs observed extraction, supply and market prices for the period 1850–2020, and is used to simulate development for the period 2020–2200. The quality of nickel ore has decreased significantly from 1850 to 2020 and will continue to do so in the future according to the simulated predictions from the WORLD7 model. For nickel, extraction rates are suggested to reach their maximum value in 2050, and that most primary nickel resources will have been exhausted by 2130. After 2100, the supply per capita for nickel will decline towards exhaustion if business-as-usual is continuing. This will be manifested as reduced supply and increased prices. The peak year can be delayed by a maximum of 100 years if recycling rates are improved significantly and long before scarcity is visible.

The composite nature of titanomagnetites found on the west coast of the north island of New Zealand is an important parameter in the beneficiation of the black beach sands for export to Japan. To investigate this composite nature, borehole and plant samples from the Waipipi Ironsands Ltd property were subjected to a series of separations in heated Clerici solutions at densities varying from 3.2 to 4.6 g/cc. The resulting density fractons were analyzed magnetically and a set of distribution curves for composite grains proposed. In addition the experi¬mental data was plotted to produce titanomagnetite sand &apos;washability curves" which illustrate the possible problem areas in beneficiation that may arise due to composite titanomagnetite grains. From this data a set of guidelines are suggested for interpreting the curves in terms of ease of gravity concentration. The composite nature or liberation of titanomagnetite grains is shown to favor high and low grade composites with few intermediate compositions being isolated. The relationships between grain size, borehole depth and liberation are examined and related to beneficiation procedures for the black sand deposit.

The processors of Florida phosphate rock face constraints similar to those of other mineral operations--leaner ore, more complex treatment schemes and a product which sells for a penny a pound. IMC Fertilizer is a dominant producer in this market with its current operation of five processing plants. An emphasis by their management in maintaining and improving plant performance has continued unabated for some 15 years. This has resulted in a commitment to the importance of routine automatic sampling of product and in process streams, the generation of reliable assay and size distribution data, the accurate measurement of process flows, and the computerized "rendering" of this information into weekly and monthly material balances which provide consistent measures of process performance. In addition, there has been a parallel program to monitor and improve the performance of flotation reagents and to evaluate process modifications or changes in equipment. This paper will describe the evaluation techniques that have evolved over this period and indicate how the historical data base is used to identify plant problems early and help in their solution.

Intelligent ore delineation refers to the ability reliably to characterize the geological setting of a mineralized body and its grade distribution. This necessitates using all available geological information in a timely and efficient manner, such that effective geological control is achieved. The importance of geological control is paramount to improving the efficiency and competitiveness of underground mines. As a result, the development of new geosensing tools designed to provide more reliable and timely information should be a priority. However, as the sensing tools advance then so, too, must the decision support system in order to allow the full benefits of these tools to be achieved. One potential system considered able to provide this architecture is ’true 3D-GIS’ (Geographical Information System). GIS promises to provide a seamless data flow and to connect information currently unavailable to the underground mine operations by bringing together previously disparate and spatial data sets in a visually effective and timely way. This paper considers the potential revolution GIS offers over the flow and use of data in mining by focusing on the integration of geosensing data and GIS to facilitate intelligent ore delineation.

This report contains the Phase I findings of a study to select and test devices for preventing lack of alertness in haulage truck drivers. The extent of the problem was determined by visiting surface metal and nonmetal mines, interviewing drivers and safety personnel and reviewing accident reports. A number of devices for detecting a lack of alertness were considered and three were recommended for testing in actual operation.

Study of the fire problem on large mobile mining equipment ? Identification of equipment most prone to fire, to serve as a design case example ? Design of an improved fire protection system ? Demonstration of the developed system This effort was performed during the period June 1972 through May 1973, and was conducted in two phases. Phase I, June through November 1972, was devoted to identifying the fire problem and developing and evaluating design criteria. Phase II involved translating the design into hardware and demonstrating its effectiveness during actual fire tests, first on a wooden mockup of a truck, then on an operating truck at a working mine site.

India is the world’s third-largest producer of coal and is endowed with the fifth-largest coal reserves in the world. Surface mining straddles the entire domain of the Indian coal mining industry, yielding over 88 per cent of production. With continually rising domestic demands, it has to shoulder the responsibility of sustaining the requisite increase in coal production and chasing commensurate stripping targets. Such an ambitious task calls for the deployment of smart technologies. In such a demanding situation, cast blasting of overburden has emerged as a promising alternative for enhancing production and productivity of dragline pits.The cast blasting technique reduces stripping costs significantly as it utilises the chemical energy of explosives in place of mechanical energy to move large volumes of overburden quickly. Proper application of cast blasting not only reduces overall mining costs but also increases coal production. This paper investigates and evaluates the potential of the cast blasting technique, with special reference to dragline pits employing the rehandle method of extended bench. The economic feasibility of the technique is also ensured under different scenarios so that considerable benefits would accrue to the individual surface coalmines. To underline the efficacy of the technique, different cast blasting models have been formulated under a range of operational and economic scenarios that resemble present day practices in India. In this study, laboratory and site studies were performed to investigate the usability of a new insertion apparatus designed for the split-set type of friction bolts. The new apparatus decreases the friction during the bolt insertion by a temporary diametric compression of the split tubes. According to the results, the new precompression apparatus was found to be advantageous in terms of the insertion practicality and prevention of the buckling problem. By allowing increases in the ratio of bolt diameter to drill-hole diameter, the new apparatus was found to supply relatively high normal stresses and friction capacity in drill holes after opening its clamping mechanism.

In the manufacture of steel by any process the refining period involves the partial elimination of the metalloids carbon, manganese, phosphorus, and silicon, by virtue of their reactions with ferrous oxide. At the end of this refining stage the metal consists chiefly of iron in which small amounts of these materials are dissolved. Unless some deoxidizer is added to the steel at this time, the reaction between carbon and ferrous oxide will continue with such force that it is impossible to form sound steel in the ingot molds. Instead, the product will exhibit a marked porosity due to the formation and trapping of carbon monoxide-the product of the reaction mentioned. However, if deoxidizers are added, steel may be obtained which is dense and free from gas bubbles. At the same time the deoxidation products will remain in the steel as impurities. For example, silicon additions form SiO2 or combinations of SiO2 and FeO. Additions of manganese form deoxidation products consisting of various proportions of MnO and FeO. It is also quite obvious that simultaneous additions of manganese and silicon will form oxide combinations either in the binary system MnO-SiO2 or in the ternary system FeO-MnO-SiO2. Work at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Carnegie Institute of Technology and the Metallurgical Advisory Board, involved the study of such deoxidizing reactions and their products. In this connection considerable information is necessary concerning FeO, MnO, SiO2, and Al2O3, and their various combinations. Some of the most needed data are the melting points of all of these materials. At the outset of this work ordinary methods of melting point determinations were found to be inadequate for various reasons, and the procedure finally selected involved the use of the micropyrometer with occasional corroboration by quenching methods. The reasons for this selection, together with a description of the apparatus, are given in the following pages.

Overexposure to noise remains a widespread, serious health hazard in the US mining and other industries despite 25 years of regulation. Most categories of illnesses and injuries associated with mining have improved, with the exception of hearing loss. The drilling of rock in a confined work environment contributes to high levels of noise exposure in mining. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to reduce the noise exposures of jackleg drill operators and to prevent additional cases of noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) by developing and evaluating low-cost retrofit noise controls for equipment. This report describes the procedure for the measurement and reporting of noise from portable pneumatic tools such as jackleg drills. The technique used in this research allows for the determination of the source A-weighted sound power levels and the radiation patterns in octave and 1/3 octave bands. Overall sound power level is also determined. This paper also reports the results obtained by using this procedure to evaluate a SECO S215 standard production drill and a CSIR Miningtek prototype rock drill incorporating engineering noise control measures. It was found that by using the manufacture?s recommended operating pressure of 496 kPa (72 psi) that the CSIR prototype?s sound power was 10 dB(A) less then that of the SECO S215.

"During the industrial electrowinning of zinc, uneven growth can cause short-circuits and make the deposits more sensitive to the presence of impurities that can significantly impact current efficiency. To produce levelled zinc deposits, additives such as glue, licorice and sodium silicate are often added to the electrolyte. Even in the presence of additives, uneven zinc growth still takes place because of the combination of hydrodynamic and electrolysis conditions in the cell house. Recent advancements in imaging spectroscopy and scaling analysis have opened an avenue to further study the effects of additives on zinc growth morphology. In this study, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and scaling analysis have been used to monitor zinc growth characteristics including roughness, periodicity, aspect ratios and growth mechanisms as a function of electrolyte composition as well as deposition time. Zinc was electrodeposited from an industrial electrolyte containing a host of additives onto an aluminum cathode with a platinum wire serving as the anode. AFM images of the samples were collected to obtain 3D topographical information on which scaling analysis was performed to extract details on root-mean-squared (rms) roughness, periodicity (grain size), aspect ratio of surface features and growth mechanism. This analysis provided information on the mechanism by which the previously mentioned variables can impact short term growth and also provided a prediction of expected growth at long deposition times.INTRODUCTIONElectrowinning is one of the final stages in the industrial production of zinc metal. It is during this process where dissolved zinc ions undergo electro-reduction from an acidic electrolyte onto an aluminum cathode and are later recovered by stripping the zinc metal from the substrate. However, due to the nature of zinc growth as well as the various operating conditions, zinc deposition may occur unevenly, sometimes causing short-circuits that can cause electrode damage and reduced zinc production."

Increasing exploration costs and the need to reduce the time-frame from exploration to production presently demand formalized procedures to assist exploration planning and reserve analysis. Exploration planning is basically required to select the most cost-effective drilling/sampling program, and to flag the needs for data of greater relevance and reliability. Reserve analysis is necessary to determine the sensitivity of grade-tonnage relations, and to clarify the economic implications of mining when alternative technical choices are to be considered.

M.S. Azun I do not at all agree with the basic points of the author&apos;s conclusion. The use of lognormal or normal model to respond to the attribute distribution function should be carefully questioned. If fitting a distribution function of regionalized variables is the main purpose, one may employ one of certain well-known families of distributions, such as Tukey&apos;s lambda functions. For instance, the distribution function of gold assay values studied by Krige (Krige, 1978) may fit the lognormal model well, but one should not exclude that the basic idea of using the distribution function of observed data is to have insight of the physical mechanism that gives rise to the regionalized variables. In Applied Geostatistics, there are many examples considering only lognormal or normal model for the distribution function of geostatistical data even if the observed distribution function has more than one mode. Of course, using lognormal or normal model always brings easy computation for the statistical properties of attribute under investigation. Still, I object to adopting any of those models without having any "statistical inference." As seen from the author&apos;s paper, lognormal and normal model produce the same average grade (0.746% copper) and almost the same sample variance. Therefore, which model explains the probabilistic behavior of ore deposit is always an important question that should be replied by the geostatistician using not the common sense but the statistical and probabilistic methods. For kriging procedures, such as linear kriging, one should describe either second order stationary properties or bivariate properties of regionalized variables. Second order properties, such as correlogram function or semivariogram function, are the inputs of the so-called kriging equations. Selecting one of any useable models for the observed second order properties, such as spherical model, is not easy since the models are not based on the correlations structure of the regionalized variables. How those models being used in Applied Geostatistics can be distinguished is another important problem. One may develop many fitting models to respond to the observed second order properties of regionalized variables. However, I suggest that the model should be based on the probabilistic behavior of geologic process. The author used spherical model for copper, wolfram, and silver grades from isotropic sector (Fig. 2, 4, 3b) and exponential model for silver grades obtained along raises in isotropic sector (Fig. 3a). It seems that those semivariograms given in Fig. 3b for isotropic sector and Fig. 4 may be described by the random model implying that regionalized variables do belong to renewal process (Azun, 1983). If I knew the total number of data points used in estimation, I may prove that my conclusion is correct. Recalling the test for the first order sample correlogram value, the test procedure is introduced such that the independence is rejected if [ ] where Za/2 is the a/2 percentile of standard normal random variable and N is the total number of samples used in estimation (Azun, 1983). For the other observed semivariogram functions I suggest the author might try to use the so-called "Markovian model" describing not only the correlation structure of regionalized variables, but also the physical mechanism that produces the regionalized variables. The Markovian model for correlogram function is, [ ] The Markovian model for the other second order properties of ReV are also derived. T ve B, in the above equation, show, for example, structural change and mineralizational variation in a considered deposit, respectively (Azun, 1983). In selecting any model, it is not easy to search for the "best" response to the observed second order properties of ReV&apos;s. The Markovian model, based on a theoretical understanding of underlying mechanism, gives more information about the occurrence of regionalized variables and respond to all properties. Random model and the so-called hole effect structure can be easily defined as a special form of the Markovian model (Azun, 1983). An estimation of any second order properties of regionalized variables may be computed through (N-1) lag. However, the dependency between the regionalized variables may be deemed to have "died out" after the so-called stationarity width (range). In practice, the estimation is carried out through 25% of the total number samples available. Therefore, the large fluctuations around the zero level and variance for correlogram or covariogram function and semi-variogram function, respectively, cannot be observed. Since the number of pairs involved in the estimation of higher second order properties is small, the estimation variance at those lags is large. There is no need to show higher order estimated second order properties. The purpose of this paper is to provide general information about the bioaccessibility of metals and specific information about the use of bioaccessibility in risk assessments (human health risk assessments [HHRA] or ecological risk assessments [ERA]) and a list of sites where regulatory agencies have approved the use of bioaccessibility data in risk assessment. The memorandum also cites current U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) guidance as well as state specific guidance where applicable. BRIEF HISTORY OF METAL BIOACCESSIBILITY TESTING AND METHODS The bioaccessible fraction of a constituent is that fraction that dissolves or desorbs from its matrix (e.g., soil) in the gastrointestinal tract and is available for absorption (USEPA 2007a; ITRC 2011; ITRC 2017). This is different from the bioavailable fraction, which is the percentage of the amount of an element that an organism is exposed to that is absorbed by that organism during a given time under defined conditions (USEPA 2007a). The bioaccessibility factor is the percentage of a metal that is potentially available for absorption and, therefore, is a conservative estimate of the bioavailable fraction since all that is available for absorption may not ultimately be absorbed into the organism’s system. Currently, there are two main techniques for estimating bioavailability of metals within a medium: in vivo animal studies (time-consuming and often cost-prohibitive), and in vitro tests that simulate human, or animal digestion in a laboratory setting. In vitro and in vivo test methods and protocols have been extensively evaluated by numerous researchers (Ruby et al. 1996; Rodriguez and Basta 1999; Sips et al. 1998; Sips et al. 2001; Molly et al 1993; Oomen et al 2002; Kelley et al. 2002; Oomen et al. 2003; Furman et al. 2006; Drexler and Brattin 2007; Basta et al. 2007; Wragg et al. 2009; Wragg et al. 2011; Chaney et al. 2011; Bradham et al. 2015; Bradham et al. 2018). The most recent scientific literature demonstrates that protocols used to estimate the bioavailability of metals to mammals also predict bioavailability of metals to birds as well (Beyer et al., 2016).

The treatment of Turam data by conventional procedures does not permit the interpreter to make any estimate of induced current magnitudes. This problem may be overcome by using an alternative data treatment procedure. It is shown that the conventional and alternative procedures are equally satisfactory in terms of their ability to provide the location of line currents and estimates of conductor quality. A full description and evaluation of both procedures is presented in conjunction with field examples to show how the alternative procedure may assist interpretation when used to complement the conventional approach.
