For a long time it has been known that it is possible to deduce conclusions about the physical constitution of the interior of the earth from the records of natural earthquakes obtained by stationary seismographs. In view of this fact it is surprising how late, relatively speaking, geologic prospecting by seismic methods has been taken up, although the first suggestion was made 40 years ago- that travel-time curves of artificial explosions might be used for the study of the change of the velocity of seismic waves as depth. Further suggestions of practical applications of artificial explosions for geologic purposes were made by Belar,2 by von dem Borne,3 by Benndorf4 and by Galitzin,5 but it was not until 1919 that Mintrop obtained. a patent on the seismic prospecting method which he has applied commercially on a large scale ever since. Dr. Mintrop came to this country with his method at about 1923. Since that time, several. American oil companies have developed seismographs of the mechanical type for the vertical component similar to that of Mintrop's (Humble Oil Co., Dr. Ricker). Other consulting geophysical companies designed other types of seismic devices, the simplest of them for the recording of the first impulse being the geophone (McCollum Geophone Co.). The galvanometric recording method as first proposed by Galitzin is being used (Geophysical Research Corpn.?) and use is being made even of the piezoelectric properties of crystals for portable seismographs (F. Rieber).. There is such an enormous variety of all kinds of portable seismographs, vibrographs, accelerographs, etc., that it is difficult to decide just what kind is preferable. Unfortunately, nothing has been published as yet about American designs of portable seismographs, except the Wood Anderson torsion-seismometer. After Mintrop's design of portable seismographs, other constructions were made.

The development of the modern highspeed vibrating screen, together with the increasing availability of long-lasting stainless-steel screen cloth for relatively fine-mesh separations, means that more screen circuits will be used in the future. It seems pertinent therefore to examine a few characteristics of screen-circuit products, and especially the points of difference as compared with products of classifier circuits. The most noticeable change that takes place when substituting screening for classification in a grinding circuit is a substantial drop in the circulating load, owing to the greater ease with which the "fines" leave the circuit. Where circulating loads of 500 to 600 per cent are considered fairly normal in classifier grinding circuits, the grinding circuit equipped with screens for equivalent work will have a circulating load of only 20 to 75 per cent. As a result, the products of screen circuits will show a minimum of overgrinding or sliming as compared with a classifier circuit. The desirability of this characteristic will naturally vary according to the metallurgical requirement in each case. Because screen separations make a sharper division according to particle size, the products of screen circuits can be expected to show greater crowding of particles near the point of separation. These changes in product characteristics are so important that other factors, both in the grinding and concentration processes must be adjusted if the operator is to take full advantage of the increased tonnages and higher efficiencies available to him through the use of the screen circuit. One factor that too often is overlooked when changing to screen circuits is the importance of adjusting the ball-mill or rod-mill charge, to compensate for: (I) increased tonnage of new feed, (2) decreased circulating load, or (3) more granular character of feed. These same factors should also be taken into consideration for their effect on the various types of concentration or flotation equipment that may follow the screen circuit. Over a period of years, this equipment has generally been designed and adjusted to the product of the classifier, therefore it seems obvious that some research on the adjustment and adaptation of concentrating and flotation equipment to screen-circuit products will be most profitable to the operators. To illustrate the points mentioned above, the results from three recent installations follow, with data on the comparative characteristics of screen and classifier circuits. A range of separation from 10 to 48 mesh has been chosen, using two general types of screening equipment and two types of classifiers. The first of the installations of which the results are to be examined is that of an iron-ore installation where eastern magnetite was being concentrated prior to sintering. This report covers the preliminary phase of an investigation of clays, shales, and certain rocks in Wisconsin to determine the feasibility of processing lightweight aggregate in the State. The study was extended to include rotary-kiln testing of a limited number of shale samples, and to an appraisal of the Maquoketa shale resources in eastern Wisconsin. A total of 45 samples of clays, shales, and other argillaceous rocks of Wisconsin were tested. The lower Maquoketa shale is the only material found to date that offers possibilities as a source of material that can be processed in a rotary kiln for lightweight aggregate. Bedrock occurrences of the Maquoketa shale are found in the eastern and southwestern parts of the State. The populous southeastern region of Wisconsin presents a large potential marketing area for lightweight aggregate. For this reason special study was directed to the Maquoketa shale in the eastern district.

During 1997 two different types of coal mine inertisation equipment were trialed in separate underground coal mines in Queensland.In April 1997 tests of the Polish developed GAG-3A inert gas generator were carried out at the Collinsville No 2 Coal Mine. These demonstrations indicated that the GAG-3A device was applicable in underground coal mines and that with respect to inertisation rate the device outperformed all other currently available techniques. The unit was assembled rapidly and operated safely during surface and underground trials and no mechanical problems were encountered with the device. The GAG-3A is not suitable for every fire scenario particularly if large volumes of fresh air are being drawn into the mine(where multiple units may be required), but with respect to the selection criteria developed by the Moura Implementation Process Task Group 5 criteria, the unit performed up to the specifications required.

Tier; production of thorium of high purity by the Ca-CaCl2 reduction has been described by Marden and Rentschler,1 who also reported some of the properties of the coherent, ductile metal obtained from this pure thorium powder. The present paper describes the properties of thorium produced by the Ca-CaCl2 process modified in some details to meet commercial conditions. The principal effect of these changes in process has been an unavoidable increase in the oxide content of the thorium.

This paper describes the MillMapper technology developed for condition monitoring of liners and other operational parameters in grinding mills used for mineral comminution, by presenting a case study of its application. MillMapper provides maintenance engineers, operations managers and process and plant metallurgists with quantitative, accurate and reliable condition monitoring data for informed decision making regarding the maintenance and metallurgical aspects of such mills. MillMapper uses calibrated laser scanners for the capture of three-dimensional surface representations inside a mill during a shutdown so as to determine shell, feed and discharge liner thickness at a resolution of several million data points, a procedure that nominally takes five minutes to complete. Once several data sets over time have been collected inside a mill, MillMapper can be used for liner wear, liner wear zone, liner weight, ball charge volume, ball charge weight and intelligent profile tracking over time. Liner tracking in combination with site defined reline and failure criteria and with throughput tonnage data is utilised for change out prediction of each separate liner segment type.

Historically, key closure risks have been studied during operations and then further assessed as cessation of mining approaches. Only in the past couple of decades or so has progressive rehabilitation and closure become an integral part of regulatory frameworks, sustainable mine planning and more recently, new project and development planning. It is now broadly accepted that the best closure outcomes occur when rehabilitation and closure are properly considered upfront, during the early stages of a mine development project and well before mining occurs. Increasingly, regulatory processes are requiring more diligence on early closure planning, often as part of the environmental impact assessment (EIA) and approvals process, rather than later in dedicated closure study phases. There is an opportunity to use the information generated during this phase to make better decisions on project selection, design, mining methodology and all other facets of the mining operation.

Optimising for Net Present Value (NPV) with a strategic optimiser such as COMET, Prober-E, Blaser or Minemax has hitherto lacked a dynamic method for analysing the so-called third-order outcomes (such as Carbon emissions) of optimisation within life-of-mine planning. Optimisation, per se, has natural effects on carbon emissions in a life-of-mine plan. Contemporary strategic planning employs a mathematical optimiser to make sense of non-linear data (ie a block model) and produces a best-NPV optimised mining schedule, within a set of constraints. The very act of optimisation influences emissions, and in a dynamic way.

SEEBECK discovered, in 1821, that if, in a closed circuit of two metals the two junctions are at different temperatures, an electric current will flow in the circuit. In the case of an iron and a copper wire, for example, current will flow from copper to iron at the hot junction, or from iron to copper at the cold junction. Two factors combine to cause the current. An electromotive force exists between the two metals, the magnitude of which, depends upon the temperature and upon the metals; this is called the Peltier e.m.f. If a single wire of homogeneous material is heated at one end, an electromotive force is developed between the ends of the wire, the magnitude of which depends upon the metal and upon the difference in temperature; this is known as the Thomson e.m.f: The total e.m.f. acting in the circuit is the sum of the Peltier e.m.f. at the two junctions and the Thomson e.m.f. in each wire, consideration being given, of course, to the algebraic signs of the four e.m.f.'s. The paper presents previously unpublished results derived from an unique interaction moitoring program conducted in the Sydney Coalfield of Nova Scotia. An abandoned, sealed longwall gateroad was re-entered and instrumented prior to extracting a longwall face 140 m below it. Instrumentation included piezometers connected to a constant head tank to monitor subsidence, and horizontally mounted extensometers to measure strains associated with subsidence. Survey levelling data was also collected. The monitoring results have allowed a number of significant conclusions to be drawn, all of which were either unanticipated or contradict current mainstream thinking. Firstly, interaction subsidence was less than anticipated. Secondly, the effects of rate of face advance on the development of the subsidence profile are evident. Thirdly, compressive strains are shown to remain in the subsided strata. Finally, strata response to undermining was almost immediate. The impact of these findings on the extraction of longwall panels beneath flooded workings in the Sydney Coalfield are discussed.

The offshore production of oil and gas resources has been active in the Gulf of Mexico since Kerr- McGee drilled the first commercial well out of the sight of land in 1947. Since then, approximately 60% of the offshore oil/gas production structures used globally have been erected in the GOM to support the production of energy resources’. The shallow, shelf and shelf edge waters of the Gulf of Mexico have reached or are rapidly approaching production maturity, requiring that the fixed structures used to support energy production be removed or otherwise disposed of by suitable means. The use of energetic materials has been determined to be a safe, efficient and cost effective technology to remove fixed offshore structures whose service life has been exceeded.

The mineral processing industry supplies raw materials to a wide variety of manufacturing sectors. Large companies such as Ford, Microsoft, and Johnson&Johnson have pledged carbon neutral supply chains in the coming decades, leaving suppliers to reevaluate their energy sources [1–3]. National Renewable Energy Lab [4] has partnered with over 700 organizations with similar goals in mind. The energy needs are broad in scope in the mineral processing industry. Generation IV of nuclear reactors, which is currently under development in both the private and public sector includes a class called microreactors like the small modular reactor XEnergy plans to install at Dow Chemical’s Gulf Coast facility by 2023 [5]. As the name implies, these are smaller than the utility scale nuclear power plants in operation today, and are intended to be more versatile. A specific reactor core design, along with modules could be selected to fit a certain application without needing to design a greenfield power plant. Basic water cooled designs could easily supply shaft work, electricity, and low grade process heat to a facility. More advanced designs, such as molten-salt-reactors and high-temperaturegas-reactors can achieve higher temperatures needed for ore roasting. Similarly, these reactors could produce hydrogen by high temperature electrolysis to use as combustion fuel and reducing atmosphere in blast furnaces.

With the introduction of Cast Blasting techniques, field controls of Drilling & Blasting operations became more important. New drills were purchased which were equipped with sophisticated instrumentation and more accurate drilling plans were required. Concurrently a decision had to be made on the replacement of borehole logging equipment owned by the mine. The use of a contractor to log blast boreholes was eventually decided upon, the information gained from this operation is used in the short-term drill and blast planning and may also be used to assist in the coaling operation if density I quality correlations prove acceptable.

The aim of this paper is to present an innovative method to help delineate potential target volumes for haematite-goethite mineralisation as opposed to more magnetic ores. This is achieved through interpretation and modelling (2.5D and 3D inversions) of ground magnetics and gravity surveys over the Koolanooka South prospect in Western Australia. The targets are assumed to be dense and weakly magnetic and hosted within banded iron formation (BIF) horizons. Geophysical interpretation (2D map) was performed using a variety of processed magnetic and gravity images (Betts et al, 2007) to determine the distribution of lithologies, to understand the structural architecture and to map out any anomalous areas of excess density (possibly indicating goethite alteration). The created geological map is used to build geological cross-sections (geometrically consistent) that were modelled (in 2.5 D) against both potential field datasets. The crosssections are consequently used as the framework to build a 3D geological model. The model defines 3D volumes of rocks including several BIF horizons. The distribution of densities and magnetic susceptibilities of the BIFs is inverted within the GOCAD«-VPmg environment to reduce the misfit between the response of the model and the observed gravity and magnetics. By combining the results of both petrophysical property distribution it is possible to map out (using classical GIS type queries in 3D) volumes of higher density and lower magnetic susceptibility.

When it comes to safety in the mining and extractive industries, success is literally a matter of life and death. Anything short of perfection is not acceptable. In recent years, the mining industry in the United States has made tremendous strides in terms of health and safety for its workers. Part of that success has come with an increased focus on the issues of safety, an intense examination of procedures, liberal sharing of best practices and a focus on the synergy between safety, reliability and environment. During his closing keynote address of the Safety Management & System Reliability Conference in Minneapolis, MN on Nov. 15, Joe Driscoll, vice president of Great Basin Gold, showed a calendar from the coal fields in Pennsylvania from the early 1900s. The calendar marked the number of mine-related deaths each month. Some months, the number was as high as 50. It was an illustration of how far things have come, but there is still much more work to be done.

"The National Safety Competition of 1930, the seventh annual contest conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines to promote safety in the mines and quarries of the United States, has been concluded, and the five winners of the bronze trophies, The Sentinels of Safety,' which are provided by the Explosives Engineer magazine and awarded annually for the most excellent safety records, have been determined by the committee of award. One trophy was awarded to an anthracite mine in Pennsylvania, one to a bituminous coal mine in the same State, one to an iron-ore mine in Michigan one to a gypsum mine in Ohio, and one to an iron-ore opencut mine in Michigan.These trophies were awarded to the companies for having the smallest loss of time from accidents in proportion to the total number of man-hours worked by all employees at their mine or quarry. Honorable mention was awarded to each mine or quarry that ranked second, third, fourth, or fifth in its own ground and to all plants that were operated without a lost-time accident during the contest year. Eighty-four out of 337 plants that competed for the trophies were operated without an accident that disabled an employee beyond the day on which the accident occurred.Under the contest rules, all mines and quarries were divided into five groups, four of the groups representing different classes of underground mining operations (anthracite, bituminous coal, metallic ore, and nonmetallic mineral), and the fifth group repre-senting the quarrying or opencut mining of minerals whether metallic or nonmetallic. Twenty-seven mines were included in the anthracite group, 68 in the bituminous group, 52 in the metal group, 24 in the nonmetallic-mine group, and 166 in the quarry and opencut-mine group. The total of 337 mines and quarries was 26 more than the number of plants that completed the contest during the previous year.The committee of award which determined the winners of the contest was composed of seven members, all known throughout the mineral industry but not connected with the United States Bureau of Mines. The committee included W. H. Cameron, managing director of the National Safety Council; William Green, president of the American Federation of Labor; James F. Callbreath, Secretary of the American Mining Congress; T. T. Read, Vinton professor of mining of Columbia University and editor of Mining and Metallurgy; C. B. Huntress, executive secretary of the National Coal Association; A. J. Curtis, assistant to the general manager of the Portland Cement Association; A. T. Goldbeck, director of the bureau of engineering of the National Crushed Stone Association."

The effect of fragmentation size distribution as it relates to front end loader productivity was evaluated by comparing loader cycle times to fragmentation size of the shot rock. At Gold Mine in Southern Utah, a gold deposit containing both limestone and sandstone formations were blasted in the same shot.
