In a certain sense, the explosives industry began in the 13th century with the invention of black powder, which is an intimate mixture of sulfur, carbon black or charcoal, and potassium or sodium nitrate. For several centuries thereafter, black powder was the sole general purpose energetic material, serving as an igniter, propelling charge, bursting charge, and blasting agent. By today’s standards, black powder is totally inadequate for the latter three functions, but its use continues as an igniter for propellant charges because of its unique ability to ignite and burn under ambient conditions. The history of the development of black powder was reviewed by Rose (1980).

Concentration and composition of rare earth elements (REE) and major elements in the sediment samples from the IOM H11 Fe-Mn nodule deposit, eastern part of the Clarion-Clipperton nodule field (located between the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone - CCFZ; tropical Pacific), have been studied. We show the controls on REE concentrations and described vertical/horizontal variability of selected metals in pelagic sediments from the CCFZ. According to Kato et al. (2011), who analyzed 2000 seafloor sediment samples at 78 sites of the Pacific Ocean, deep-sea mud shows high concentrations (2230 ppm maximum) of ?REY and could be potential resource of these elements in the future. However, our work does not fully confirm that sediments in the IOM H11 are significantly enriched in REE.

For this reason a raw material policy, both national and international, is necessary to ensure access to new mineable deposits which are still available in Germany. Further on, knowing market conditions is a must for sustainable development. At least sustainability and resource efficiency in potash and rock salt mining are achieved by constantly developing new technologies as well as optimizing the organization and improving qualification of workers."

In an underground mine, different mining activities such as undercutting and cave progression generate redistribution in the present in situ stress field, and these changes are represented in the rock mass through induced seismicity.In order to study and analyse the induced seismicity generated in El Teniente, a block model was developed to account for the dissipated seismic energy through different areas of the mine from 1992 to 2015. More than 2.1 million seismic events were unified and classified in 3D in order to be used for the interpolations. The resultant model variables account for the accumulated energy releases in a monthly time resolution, and provide the ability to intersect different 3D entities with the stored information in the blocks, and estimate the energy evolution inside these entities.The generated model was used to analyse the geotechnical variables that determine the seismic response for the rock mass in the mine, such as geometry and direction of advance of the undercut fronts, lithological domains, and to study the ‘work’ the rock mass needed to go through in order to generate caving in areas with different stress settings.A specific area of the mine under high-stress conditions was analysed by studying the seismic energy associated with two subsidence caves interacting around the project, the modelled lithology. Using the same approach two adjacent projects are analysed to understand the released energy from the rock mass based on different stress and geotechnical settings for each project.CITATION:Córdova, E, Brzovic, A and González, R, 2016. "The role of flash flotation in precious metal recovery is reviewed. Interacting flash flotation and gravity recovery is discussed. The GRG test can be used, when linked to the behaviour of gold in grinding and classification units, to predict the recovery of GRG by flash flotation. The Cadia mill in New South Wales is used as a case study of circuit design, performance and simulation. It is shown that high throughput coarse grind applications such as Cadia require very effective fine GRG recovery systems in the primary grinding loop, which are more consistent with flash flotation than batch centrifuge concentrators (BCCs). BCCs can effectively recover a significant fraction of the GRG from flash concentrates, as predicted by laboratory testing and confirmed at a growing number of mill sites.INTRODUCTIONThe GRG test was designed to characterize Gravity Recoverable Gold (GRG) ten years ago (Woodcock and Laplante, 1993; Laplante et al, 2000), in response to the need to predict how much gold could be recovered from the main circulating load of grinding circuits using centrifuge concentration. The amount of GRG is not itself a prediction of gravity recovery: the performance of a gravity circuit nested in a circulating load also depends on the type and size of unit used, how much of the circulating load is treated, and how many times GRG is recycled and presented to the recovery circuit. The GRG test was first used in a simulator to predict gravity recovery (Laplante et al, 1995), and indeed most of the early tests targeted ores or prospective ores for which gravity recovery was an obvious match. As the test became more accepted, more and more samples returned a verdict that precluded the use of gravity recovery, or made it marginal. Typically, such ores are either copper-gold or base metal ores in which the GRG content is often fine (largely below 105 um) and ranges from 8 to 33%. Extensive simulation and plant sampling tests, either published (Laplante et al, 1997) or proprietary, show that full scale gravity recovery for these applications is generally below lo%, and can be as low as 2%. Not in all cases are such low recoveries economically unjustifiable, since there is documented evidence (Darnton et al, 1992) that a significant proportion of the gold recovered, at least in the case of base metal ores, would not have reported to the copper or zinc concentrate and received NSR credits."

Two Rb-Sr ages are discernible in data concerning the leucocratic granite which is the youngest pre-sedimentation phase of the crystalline basement complex at Rum Jungle, Northern Territory, Australia. Whole-rockdata suggest that intrusion of this unit took place at about 2400 my ago, with a probable initial ratio around o·707; whole rock-potassium feldspar tie-lines indicate redistribution of strontium at about 1800 my ago. The former age correlates with other measurements on rocks which form basement to the mantling Pine Creek Geosyncline; the latter correlates also with isotopic evidence for regional metamorphism and emplacement of some younger intrusive granites elsewhere within the geosyncline. A few K-Ar ages, from scattered localities, conform generally with the later event or events which appear to have some connection with the structural deformation clearly observable both in the complex and the surrounding metasediments. It is these younger events which appear to match the residual evidence for the earliest detectable concentration of uranium minerals in the Alligator Rivers district.

Theoretical flotation models suggest that there is a positive relationship between bubble-particle collision rates and turbulent kinetic energy dissipation. Fine particle flotation performance is generally enhanced by increased collision frequency and hence higher energy dissipation. Contrarily, increased turbulence in the rotor-stator region is related to higher detachment frequency of the coarser size range. Therefore, the optimal modes of recovery for the 'fine' and 'coarse' size classes appear to be diametrically opposed. Industrial applications have previously confirmed that applying greater power to flotation slurries yields significant improvements in fine particle recovery. However, recovery of the coarser size class favours a different flotation environment. An improvement in the flotation kinetics of the fine and coarse size classes, provided there is no adverse metallurgical influence on the intermediate size ranges, is obviously beneficial to the overall recovery response. Managing the local turbulent kinetic energy dissipation, and hence the power imparted to the slurry, offers the benefit of targeting the particle size ranges exhibiting slower kinetics. FLSmidth recently introduced the practical implementation of this concept. In principle, it decouples flotation regimes where fine and coarse particles exhibit preferentially recovery. In the case of naturally aspirated machines (Wemco®), it is referred to as Hybrid Energy Flotation? and incorporates at least three phases: > Standard flotation machines (standard energy input, rotor speed (r/min), rotor size/type) at the beginning of the row, where flotation is typically froth-phase limited and operational and set-up parameters have a limited influence on the recovery > Higher-powered flotation machines (high rotor speed, high-power rotor size/type) at the end of the row to improve fine particle recovery > Lower-powered flotation machines (low rotor speed, low power rotor size/type) to enhance coarse particle recovery. A CFD-based flotation model is used to highlight the effect of turbulent dissipation energy on attachment and detachment rates. Preferential collection zones for fine, and 'coarse' particles are predicted for both forced-air and naturally aspirated machines. The greater predominance of UG2 ore types, coupled with the skewed feed distribution of platinum group metals (PGMs) to the finer size fractions, suggests that PGM flotation circuits are not designed for optimal recovery across the size distribution. The application of the hybrid energy concept to PGM flotation offers a possible shift towards a more efficient flotation circuit solution through a managed distribution of energy.

Previous methods for measuring the flow of solids in Jnrdraulic conveying have not considered the important effects of slip velocity and particle concentration. In this paper an extension of the method proposed byShirato et al. (J. Chem. Engng. 'Japan, 1: 164-167) for determining mass flow in a vertical conduit is outlined.The present method consists of measuring' the volumetric flow of the slurry (by a magnetic flow meter for instance) and the density of the slurry in two pipe sections of different diameters. Effects of variation of slip withparticle concentration, not previously considered, are allowed.Problems involved in estimating the density of a slurry from differential pressure measurement are discussed.The major problem is the uncertainties in estimating frictional losses due to the wall in two-phase flows. The greater reliability of a more "direct" technique, such as by 'Y-ray absorption, for measuring solid concentration is emphasized.

The sulphides can be arranged in a series determined by the relative amounts of ionic and covalent bonding present. This series is similar to the paragenetic series common to most sulphide ore deposits. Investigation of the surface tensions of the corresponding heavy metal iodides by the maximum bubble pressure method throws some light upon this relationship. It is shown that the surface tension of molten iodides decreases as the chemical bonding within them becomes more covalent. These results are interpreted in terms of the constitution of the melts, and are extended to cover the case of sulphides in solution in a silicate melt. It is concluded that sulphides tend to lower the surface tension of silicate melts and that this tendency becomes greater as the bonding within the dissolved sulphide groups becomes more covalent. A possible relationship between this conclusion and the origin of paragenesis in sulphide ore deposits is indicated.INTRODUCTIONIt is well known that the order of deposition, or paragenesis of sulphide minerals is remarkably similar in hypogene ore deposits throughout the world. This widespread similarity points towards the operation of some fundamental process which must be intimately connected with -the genesis of these ores. This study aims to investigate the effects of operational variables on concentrate grade, recovery, separation efficiency, and kinetic parameters of the copper flotation process. For this purpose, the effects of the pulp solids content, collector and frother dosage, and preparation and concentrate collection time were studied using a Taguchi experimental design. The results of statistical analyses indicated that the concentrate collection time and pulp density were the most influential parameters on concentrate grade. Considering copper recovery, concentrate collection time, collector dosage, and pulp density were the most significant variables, in decreasing order of importance. Also, the separation efficiency was mostly influenced by the concentrate collection time. Furthermore, kinetic studies showed that the second-order rectangular distribution model perfectly matched the experimental flotation data. The highest kinetic constant of 0.0756 s−1 was obtained from the test, which was performed with 35% solids content and 40 and 20 g/t collector and frother, respectively. The highest predicted copper recovery of 99.57% was obtained from the test at 30% solids content, and the collector and frother dosages of 40 and 15 g/t, respectively

Electron microbeam analysis of metallurgical samples covers abroad field and has applications in the areas of minerals processing, hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, physical metallurgy and corrosion. Some idea of the possibilities of microbeam techniques can be illustrated by examining the following example of a run of mine gold ore sample. Milling and bulk chemical analysis of the ore will provide major and minor element analysis as well as the gold grade. More detailed chemistry can also reveal the presence of trace elements that may be advantageous or deleterious to downstream processing. Electron microbeam analysis can provide additional information in the form of size, liberation, association and composition of the gold, the percentage of refractory gold, the size, liberation, association and composition of enclosing sulphide or arsenide phases and the levels and association of the trace elements that may affect processing. In most cases electron microbeam analysis complements bulk chemistry, and does not replace it. Both techniques should be used in parallel for maximum effect. This paper touches on the origin and history of electron microbeam techniques, as well as the theory behind microbeam analysis and processing. The more common types of instruments and their applications will also be dealt with briefly.

There are challenges in mining deep tabular ore deposits using the open stoping method, particularly mining remnant panels towards the end of mine life. The remnant panels have experienced stress concentration and are in the failing or post failure state causing drilling and loading difficulties, ground movement, induced seismicity and ground instability problems. As more mines are going deep, without effective ground control management, the mine production will be interrupted and equipment damage and personnel injury are likely to occur. Mining at Falconbridge Lockerby Mine located in the Sudbury Basin was concentrated in the deep zone from late 1990s to 2004. The remnant panels situated approximately from 1800m to 1920m below surface were mined in 2004 before the mine closure. These panels were in the central section of the orebody along strike. The orebody was relatively narrow ranging from 5m to 15m and steep dipping at 70o to 80o. Because of the retreat mining sequence and the mining depth, stress concentration, wall closure and seismicity had caused a number of mining difficulties. Managing these challenges was critical in achieving the mine production target without compromising personnel safety and excavation stability. A comprehensive ground control management approach was adopted to mine the remnant panels at depth. The measures taken included ground movement monitoring, understanding the movement pattern of the footwall rock and selecting appropriate support systems, analyzing seismic monitoring data and defining re-entry protocol, brow support design and restricting access. This paper presents these ground control measures and the experience gained in successfully mining the deep remnant panels at Lockerby Mine.

A high explosives shock tube has been constructed and developed to test blast resistant windows with pressure versus time waveforms similar to waveforms generated by arena testing. Calibration of the high explosives shock tube, or Large Arena Test Simulator (LATS), included numerous tests performed by detonating varying charge weights at different distances from three piezoelectric pressure sensors located at one end of the shock tube (where the test subject would be installed). The maximum reflected pressure and positive phase impulse were calculated for each waveform generated in the tests. Pressure versus distance and impulse versus distance graphs were generated. Results have been graphed in order to predict charge weights and distances that correlate to the desired pressure and impulse at the end of the tube for future tests. This is a valuable tool when testing expensive, job specific components so the loading requirements are met on the first attempt.

Falls of small pieces of rock from between roof bolts continue to cause fatalities and to injure hundreds of coal miners each year. Roof screen is the most effective way to prevent these incidents, but some mines are reluctant to use it because they believe installing screen can be awkward, expensive and time-consuming. The most common type of roof bolting machine used in mines today is the dual boom, outside-controlled roof bolter. Mines who install roof screen using these machines have developed some machine modifications and techniques to ease roof screen installation. This paper describes some successful techniques and machine modifications that are being used in productive mines to assist with roof screen installation. Since the material handling involved with roof screen installation can expose miners to an increased risk of musculoskeletal injuries, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) ergonomists, designed machine modifications and implemented a series of tests to evaluate roof screen handling procedures for outside-controlled, dual boom roof bolting machines. Roof screen installation can also have a positive economic impact on a mine by reducing the cost of injuries, workers’ compensation, required spot or re-bolting, and clean-up of long term travel and belt entries.

Drilled displacement piles are being increasingly used as foundation elements, particularly in projects requiring fast construction. Different types of drilled displacement (DD) piles are available in practice. DD piles are classified according to the drilling tool design and installation method. The capacity of a DD pile, depending on its type, is between the capacities of geometrically similar nondisplacement and full-displacement piles installed in the same soil profile. This paper provides an overview of the different types of DD piles and their installation techniques and describes three design methods used in practice. It also compares DD pile capacities obtained with these design methods for two different sites.

"An attempt to review the recent literature on comminution reveals at once that the subject has many ramifications and that the applications are so diverse that there are very few general statements which can be made.It. seems reasonable to start classification on the basis of size of material as Input to the comminution process. However, we find that this can only be done in a very imprecise manner.The initial step of breaking rock from its natural state of very large pieces in geological formations into sizes suitable for processing is accomplished by blasting. This step in the process has not been ex-amined in this project except to note that great changes have been made during the last decade or so in the explosives used, and in the method of handling them. We should determine what effect changes in mining methods can have on the need for crushing.The second step in the process is usually primary crushing, performed by gyratory or jaw crushers. The largest chunk which can be fed to a jaw crusher depends on the size of the machine, and should be larger than the largest fragment produced in the miring process. It is obvious that the larger the crusher, the less care required in mining to en¬sure the absence of rocks too large to be crushed. The optimum size of crusher to minimize overall cost of mining and reduction is not at all obvious, and no information on this point has come to light in this investigation.It is rather generally accepted that size reduction is most efficiently done in small stages, and that different machines have different opti¬mum size ranges of feed. For example, crushers are preferred for sizes above about 1"", rod mills for the range between 1"" and 0.1"", ball mills are preferred from 0.1""down to perhaps 10 microns, and vibratory mills, or jet mills, below 10 microns."

"Pyhäsalmi Mine in Finland has a long history of continuous process development. The concentrator processes Cu-Zn-sulphide ore with high recoveries. An on-line flotation simulator has been developed to maintain and further improve the flotation performance. Consisting of a flotation kinetic dynamic model, and interconnected with process control software, the simulator can be used for training new control room operators in various scenarios. For daily operation, the model parameters are continuously adapted to take into account the changing process conditions. On-line simulator tracking the process can provide the process operator new information in several ways: a) values of unmeasured process variables are obtained by displaying the corresponding simulator values, b) predictions of future process states and outputs are calculated and displayed, c) information of changing process parameters can be used as an indicator of e.g. change in the processed ore type. This paper describes the adaptive simulation system and its usage at the Pyhäsalmi concentrator.IntroductionPyhäsalmi massive sulphide orebody is located in central Finland. Operation of the mine started in 1962 and it is currently producing copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) and sulphur (S) concentrates. The concentrator control and optimization system has a long history of successful continuous development during the past decades (see e.g. Huuskonen & Moilanen, 2010). An on-stream analyzer has been a part of the automatic process control since 1968 (Lähteenmäki, Miettunen & Saloheimo, 1999). First control algorithms based on a flotation mathematical model were developed in 1971 (Koivistoinen & Miettunen, 1985). In 1990’s the development of a froth machine vision systems started (Kaartinen, 2009; Kaartinen, Roine & Hätönen, 2009). More recently Pyhäsalmi Mine Oy has been involved with several national development projects dealing with particle size distribution measurements (Kaartinen & Tolonen, 2008), spectral analysis of flotation slurries (Haavisto, Kaartinen & Hyötyniemi, 2008), and dynamic simulation of flotation processes. Geologic faults have always been a plague to the mining industry, and have often reduced a mining venture from a profitable to a marginal operation, and even at times have forced companies to liquidation or bankruptcy. The use of geology as an economic tool in coal mining is not generally recognized, particularly in coal deposits which are horizontal or essentially flat-lying, in which faulting might not be prevalent. However in pitching coal seams, the existence of faults is considered an inherent challenge, as the inclination of the seam or seams per se, is a product of geologic disturbance. The problems of faults are a constant challenge to the management of the Thompson Creek Coal and Coke Corp. in their operations in Pitkin County, Colorado, where high grade medium volatile coking coal is mined. The background for this paper has been provided by the experiences of these operations, in overcoming the effects of faults in mining, and resolving the fault structures. The properties of the Thompson Creek Coal and Coke Corp. are located in central Colorado, 13 miles southwest of Carbondale, Colorado, a tow] on the main highway between Glenwood Springs and Aspen, Fig. 1. The elevation at the mine portals is approximately 8000 feet: there is a relief of some 2.000 feet to the adjacent ridges rising away from the [nine portals. 'The entire present production of these properties totaling 180.000 tons of clean coal per year is trucked to the railhead at Carbondale, Colorado, from whence it is shipped to the Geneva Steel Plant at Provo, Utah. The properties were initially opened in September 1952. A total of 125 men are currently employed with the production conting from the Number 1 and 3 Mines, and development workings of the Number 2 and 5 Mines respectively. While the No. 2 Vine was opened in 1953 prior to No, 3 Mine, the encountering of faults without sufficient development work accomplished to sustain production, necessitated the diversion of manpower to the other [nines for economic considerations. This paper aims to summarise the discovery of the QTS Central resource, a previously unidentified +1 Mt inferred resource that lies between two major CSA resource systems.The 1.7 Mt at 5.76 per cent Cu, QTS Central ore system represents 1/6th of the CSA mineral resource and was discovered in 2014 based on the accumulation of historic exploration records dating back to 1989.The CSA deposit consists of five ore systems hosted within turbidite-derived siltstones (CSA Siltstone) and lesser sandstones (five per cent) of the Devonian Amphitheatre Group. The host sediments strike approximately north–south with a steep westerly dip and exhibit a well-developed east dipping cleavage. Most CSA mineralisation is hosted within dilation zones at the intersection of cross-cutting structures and is interpreted as epigenetic in origin.Alteration and weak mineralisation, up plunge to the reported QTS Central mineral resource, was initially detected in 1990 during a downhole electromagnetic conductivity (EM) study, where one hole indicated an off-hole conductor, later tested with four diamond holes. One of these diamond holes intersected 3 m at 7.5 per cent Cu at 200 m. Development of the 9070 Subway drive in 2005/2006, linked the QTS North and QTS South workings and intersected structures interpreted to host QTS Central mineralisation. Subsequent drilling proximal to the 9070 Subway in 2007 identified an up plunge extension to the QTS Central zone (UDD07152: 1.8 m at 6.3 per cent Cu from 10.7 m). Work on QTS Central was largely forgotten until 2012 when the mining of a 450 m infrastructure drive provided a platform to test the anomalous grades. In December 2013, drill hole UDD13055A intersected 20.9 m at 7.2 per cent Cu from 378 m. By the end of 2014, the QTS Central inferred resource was 1.0 Mt at 6 per cent Cu and 18 g/t Ag (Hosken and Apaza, 2014). Late in 2016, further infill drilling occurred from two fronts to increase confidence in the QTS Central resource. The results of this drilling are expected late in 2017.The current interpretation indicates the QTS Central system consists of two main lenses hosted within closely bedded sandstones and siltstones. The sandstone in general is not mineralised, being heavily silicified, while the siltstone is mineralised and chloritised. The main mineralised lens is 75–200 m along strike and 450 m high. Massive sulfide feeder structures lie at the core of the two main lenses, although the characteristics of the QTS Central system tend toward the mineralisation being more chlorite-rich than in QTS North and QTS South.CITATION:Apaza, E and Neumayr, R, 2017.
