Introduction Despite perennial economic turbulence, Argentina continues to push ahead with efforts to develop its fledgling hardrock mining industry. The country lacks the infrastructure and mining history of neighboring Chile, but contains vast areas of great resource potential. The eastern slope of the Andean Cordillera in west-northwest Argentina is a relatively little-explored region offering geology highly conducive to the occurrence of base and precious metals deposits. Past exploration has concentrated on locating and evaluating porphyry copper-molybdenum (Cu-Mo) type occurrences. Comparatively little attention has been given to precious metals potential. An interesting and important group of base and precious metals prospects in northwestern Argentina occurs within and adjacent to the Upper Miocene Farallon Negro volcanic complex in Catamarca province. The volcanic complex contains numerous base and precious metals vein occurrences, high gold porphyry copper prospects, and possible disseminated gold targets that have attracted relatively minor attention in the past. Various geologic aspects of the region have been reported by several workers (Llambias, 1970, 1972; Caelles et al, 1971; and Sillitoe, 1973). Regional geology The Farallon Negro volcanic complex is located within the Sierras Pampeanas morphostructural province about 200 km (125 miles) east of the main Andean Cordillera (Fig. 1). The Sierras Pampeanas is characterized by north-south-trending basin and range topography that developed during the Miocene and Pliocene. Uplifted blocks are composed mainly of lower Paleozoic metasediments and granitoid plutonic rocks unconformably overlain by Tertiary redbeds and minor carbonates. A consistent landward migration of volcanic and intrusive ac¬tivity occurred in this region of the Andes from the early Mesozoic through the mid-Tertiary. The Waihi Region is host to many low sulphidation epithermal Au-Ag deposits. The Golden Cross mine located at the head of the Waitekauri River, eight kilometres NW of Waihi, was a gold mining operation that placed significant emphasis on environmental management. An assessment of the influence of this mining project on stream sediment geochemistry (Fe, Mn, As, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd, Ni, Ag and Se) in the Waitekauri Catchment has been made. Effective waste management during the mine operation appears to have prevented contamination of stream sediment. Trace metal concentrations in the Waitekauri Catchment sediment have generally decreased since 1987, and are currently mainly below the ANZECC (2000) sediment quality guidelines. However, elevated As levels were recorded in the Upper Waitekauri River and Battery Stream, exceeding guideline values. Elevated levels of Cu, Pb, Zn and Cd were found in the Huanui Stream, a tributary of the lower Waitekauri River. This reflects the influence of past mining operations in the valley, as well as natural weathering of hydrothermally altered Coromandel Group andesite. At a number of sites, Mn concentrations also exceeded sediment quality guidelines, and this may be derived from the remediated Golden Cross mine site.

Steel fiber reinforced concrete segmental rings are the final tunnel lining for approximately 85% of the alignment for a 6.706-meter (22-foot) internal diameter tunnel being built as part of the East Side Combined Sewer Overflow Tunnel Project. This paper describes the approach adopted for the design of the steel fiber reinforced concrete segments, the development of the performance criteria for the segments, and the testing program used to confirm the performance of the materials and segments in the laboratory and in the field.

he flotation studies on hematite were carried out using di (2-ethylhexyl) Phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) as the collector. The possible mineral reagent interaction was studied through electrokinetic and dissolution studies. The shift in zeta potential (PZC) and decrease in dissolution of iron in the presence of D2EHPA indicated that D2EHPA was specifically adsorbed on hematite surface. The adsorption imparted necessary hydrophobicity for flotation of hematite. Hematite could be floated selectively from hematite and quartz synthetic mixture. "The recovery of gold from ores is often accompanied by the release of other species in the leach solution. This state of affairs leads to depleted free cyanide levels in the slurry. Therefore, separation and quantification of these cyanicides and free cyanide at different stages of the cyanidation process as well as in waste solutions is crucial to provide mitigation tools by preventing leaching of deleterious metals for environmental considerations.COREM and the research group of Prof. Larachi have been working together on the control of gold passivation and cyanicides during cyanidation for several years. Previously, a first capillary electrophoresis (CE) protocol for the speciation of sulfur and cyanicides (SCN-, Cu, Fe) during cyanidation of gold complex sulfide ores was developed and validated for assessing industrial process water.The separation of zinc cyanide complexes used to be confronted with a number of difficulties due to the weak and/or undetectable cyanocomplexes in formally available CE protocols. Moreover, according to our knowledge, no direct CE protocol exists to separate free cyanide. Therefore, a new study aimed at developing a second CE protocol for the detection and quantification of cyanide complexes of zinc and nickel as well as of free cyanide in the cyanidation process water.To achieve this goal, six common carrier electrolytes such as pyridine, trimellitic acid, 4-methylbenzylamine, sodium chromate, phthalic acid and tris base were studied, using an indirect UV detection method. The best results were obtained using sodium chromate for which all ions were successfully separated and quantified. In addition, the effect of electric field strength, injection volume, electro-osmotic flow (EOF) modifier and background electrolyte (BGE) concentration were examined, while peak height, peak area and noise were considered for optimization.As a result, the new protocol is expected to complete the initial CE protocol by detecting cyanide complexes of zinc and nickel as well as free cyanide. Moreover, analytical determination of free cyanide in the presence of weak cyanide complexes achieved by the new protocol was also compared to conventional titration using silver nitrate solution. This new CE protocol will contribute to applied research and help plants to better understand and eventually control the behaviour of cyanidation circuits."

The distribution of copper between liquid silver and liquid iron, Fe-C, and Fe-C-Si alloys was studied at 1600°C. From the data and the activity of copper in silver obtained from the phase diagrams, the activity coefficients of copper in iron up to 3 atomic pct are log y, = 0.90 — 2.4 N, and y": = 8.0. The effect of carbon up to saturation is expressed as log y = 1.8 Ni. The effect of silicon up to 11 atomic pct is insignificant. SLOWLY rising copper content of steel being produced is focusing attention on the lack of information on the behavior of copper in liquid steel. Chou' measured the activity coefficient of copper in liquid iron through its distribution between liquid silver and iron. He obtained a value of 9.12 at infinite dilution. Chipman' calculated the activity coefficient of copper in liquid iron at 1600°C from the phase diagram and obtained a value of 12. Ameiln and Pfeiffer- investigated the possibility of removing copper from liquid steel through the use of lead, silver, and bismuth as solvents. They also calculated that the activity coefficient of copper in liquid iron would be increased five or sixfold by addition of 4 pct C. Langenberg and Lindsay' are investigating the effectiveness of lead and sodium sulfide in removing copper from liquid iron. The experimental method was similar to that used by Chou' and Chipman and Floridis." Silver, copper, and iron were melted together, the copper distributing itself between the two layers so that at equilibrium a,.,, (in Ag) - a,.,, (inFe) and N,.,, (in Ag) yc,, (inFe) (in Ag). [21 N,.,, (inFe) Thus, from the concentration of copper in each layer and the activity coefficient of copper in liquid silver, the activity coefficient of copper in liquid iron can be calculated. The effect of an alloying element such as carbon on the activity coefficient of copper can also be determined from its effect on the distribution, provided the new element is essentially insoluble in silver. The one serious limitation of this method is the increasing mutual solubility of silver and iron in the presence of a third component. The mutual solubilities of pure iron and silver are negligible, but increase with increasing copper concentration beyond the range investigated. Ag-Cu System—The activity coefficient of copper in silver at 1600°C had to be estimated, since direct experimental data are not available. Kawakami" measured the heat of mixing of Ag-Cu alloys at 1200°C by a calorimetric technique. Scheil' calculated the heat of mixing in this system by use of the phase diagram, assuming that the solution is random and that the heat of mixing is independent of temperature. AngloGold Ashanti Ltd nominated Sunrise Dam Gold Mine as a case study via their involvement with the long-running Australian Mineral Industry Research Association (AMIRA) International P9P research program (AMIRA, 2015) . A group of researchers from the Global Comminution Collaborative (GCC) conducted a comminution circuit survey and review together with a large group of graduate metallurgists, senior metallurgists and operators. Fundamental and applied research understanding was used to identify productivity and efficiency improvements around the crushing and grinding circuits. The limitations of current scientific knowledge were identified through this process and this will allow future research to be more focussed on what is required by industry.The comminution circuit at Sunrise Dam comprises three stages of crushing followed by two stages of ball milling. The secondary crusher and primary ball mill classification were identified as the primary limitations of the circuit. The secondary crusher was found to be underperforming through overall equipment efficiency (OEE) analysis and an improved chamber design was identified by Chalmers University. This improved design will promote higher power utilisation, choke feeding and a finer crushed product for the milling circuit. The primary ball mill product is classified by a combination of a trommel, 3 sieve bends and a hydrocyclone. The combination of poor classification and coarse, competent feed led to a situation where the primary mill was overfilled with rocks, reducing grinding rate due to cushioning of impact. In recent years, determining bearing capacity of piles from in-situ testing data as a complement of static and dynamic analysis has been used by geotechnical engineers. In this paper, different approaches for estimating base bearing capacity of piles from SPT data has been compared and evaluated. A new method for pile base bearing capacity in sand is proposed using SPT records. Data averaging, failure zone extension, and plunging failure of piles have been addressed in the proposed approach. A data bank comprising 10 full scale static load tests on instrumented piles and 26 dynamic tests, analyzed with signal matching technique by CAPWAP software, was used for validation. The SPT data that was performed close to pile locations is also included in the data base. Comparison of current methods by error investigation with Log-Normal approach demonstrates that the proposed method predicts pile base capacity with more accuracy and less scatter in comparison to other methods.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) conducted a joint survey to determine the range of coal particle sizes found in dust samples collected from intake airways of US coal mines. The last comprehensive survey of this type was performed in the 1920s. The size of the coal dust is relevant to the amount of rock dust required to inert the coal dust, with more rock dust needed to inert finer sizes of coal dust. Dust samples were collected by MSHA inspectors from several mines in each of MSHA's 10 bituminous Coal Mine Safety and Health Districts. Samples were normally collected in several intakes at each mine. The laboratory analysis procedures included acid leaching of the sample to remove the limestone rock dust, sonic sieving to determine the dust size, and low-temperature ashing of the sieved fractions to correct for any remaining incombustible matter. The results indicate that particle sizes of mine coal dust in intake airways are finer than those measured in the 1920s. This finer size coal dust in intake airways would require more incombustible matter to be effectively inerted than the 65% incombustible specified in current regulations.

Cementitious seals are made of foamed cements with strength ranging from 100 to 600 psi. These cementitious seals are usually used at locations where the seal will be subjected to some convergence, assuming that this material can absorb entry closure without compromising the structural integrity of the seal. Prior to 2006, Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) conducted full-scale tests on various cementitious seals designed to meet or exceed the 20-psi horizontal static load requirements of the old 30 CFR1 75.335. Both hydrostatic and dynamic loading tests were conducted. The structural response (pressure and displacement readings) obtained from these tests were recorded. The stability of the cementitious seal is based on balancing the load applied to the face of the seal from the explosion against the shearing resistance at the seal/rock interface. Therefore, the properties of the seal/rock interface, such as stiffness, cohesion, friction, etc. are critical to determine the stability of a cementitious seal. These properties are usually assumed by the researchers in their models. This paper emphasizes the importance of having the correct properties of seal/rock interface in the numerical modeling. FLAC 3D models were developed to simulate Celuseal2 cementitious seals subjected to both hydrostatic and dynamic loadings. Using the hydrostatic and dynamic loading test data conducted at LLEM, the static and dynamic properties of the seal/rock interface were back calculated. The FLAC 3D models showed good agreement with the test results.

The Dy deposit is a 21 Mt Pb-Zn-Ag-Au SEDEX-type massive sulphide resource located in the Anvil District, Faro, Yukon. This relatively unexplored orebody lies at a depth of 480 to 920m below surface, dips 20 to 35o and comprises vertical ore thicknesses of 3 to 28m at a 9% Pb + Zn cut-off grade. The deposit has been tested at depth with 63 surface diamond drillholes, but has not yet been explored or developed by underground means. Over the past decade, pre-feasibility investigations were conducted for two separate owners of the property to determine the economic viability of developing an underground mine at Dy. Following these previous studies an assessment was undertaken between 1998 and 2000 to further investigate geotechnical considerations for underground mining. The results and conclusions drawn from this study provide direction for possible future exploration at Dy.

The relationship between the maceral composition of coal and the strength of the coke produced from that coal has received a great deal of attention in recent years.Studies using two Bulli Seam coals, and blends of Bulli and Wongawilli Seam coals, from the IIIawarra Measures of the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales were carried out.The optimum range of vitrinite was found to lie between 45 per cent and 60 per cent (mineral matter free).Above and below this vitrinite range coke strength deteriorated. Coke strength indices increased with rank, and the optimum vitrinite content increased with an increase in rank. These changes require confirmation as trends by testing a third level of rank. It was noted that vitrinite content decreased with an increase in the specific gravity of separation of the coal.Use of petrographic analyses will increase confidence in choosing coals for coking, provided the coals are well known. Such analyses offer the possibility of greater flexibility in coal purchases and the possibility of producing a marketable blend from coals, which have limited market potential. Critical base coals for blends can be conserved.Significantly more work is required before coal reserves can be utilized to optimum advantage. This work would require extension of the studies discussed in this paper and, in particular, the testing of a wider range of rank.

Deposits of the metalloids arsenic and antimony occur in quartz veins of mesothermal hydrothermalsystems in the South Island as arsenopyrite (AsFeS) and stibnite (Sb2S3). Arsenopyrite and stibnite occur in natural exposures in gold-mining areas, and additional arsenopyrite and stibnite have been exposed to the atmosphere by mining activity. At present the drinking water limits for dissolved As and Sb are 10 ppb and 3 ppb respectively. Sampling and analysis techniques are critical to determination of metalloid concentrations at these low levels. Endeavour Inlet in the Marlborough Sounds is an historic mining area (late 19th Century) with elevated As and Sb in waters emanating from mineralised rocks. Waters running out of abandoned adits have concentrations of As and/or Sb up to ppm levels. Natural waters have high Sb and low As, and the As levels increase markedly where anthropogenic activity has exposed rock. Changes in Sb/As ratio could potentially be used to quantify the anthropogenic component of metalloid mobility on mine sites on the 100-year time scale.

Aragonite was synthesized in addition of Mg2+ ion and SrCO3 seed by carbonation process, and the best condition and mechanism of the synthesis was studied by analysis of continuous pH change, ICP, XRD, and SEM. As MgCl2•6H2O addition increased, aragonite phase increased at condition of CO2 flow rate of 100 mL/min and stirring rate of 250 rpm. It was the dissolution of Mg(OH)2 that determined overall reaction time. As SrCO3 seed addition increased at 0.2 mole MgCl2•6H2O, the amount of aragonite increased and the aspect ratio was from 5 to 9. And it was thought that Mg2+ ion prohibited calcitetransformation of aragonite formed by SrCO3.

Talk some about your background. Mining, particularly coal, runs in the family. I come from a mining family, one generation re-moved. Both of my grandfathers worked in the coal mines. My mother?s father had worked as a coal miner in the South Hills area of Pittsburgh after coming to America from Croatia. My father?s father (who died of black lung long before I was born) had been born in America and worked as a mine foreman and superintendent in mines just outside the Pittsburgh area. My father often talked about when, as a child, he accompanied his father underground on Sundays to check the mine pumps. While I never expected to go into mining, I often read some of my grandfather?s books on mining technology that my father had kept. I started college at Penn State and drifted into mining engineering as my third declared major. I was finally realizing the importance of a career choice. I?ve never regretted that decision. One of my children, Mark, has followed me into mining engineering, much to my surprise and pride. Evidently, he had been listening to the many conversations I had with friends and colleagues in the industry and never considered any other career path. He has since married another mining engineer, Kray Davis Luxbacher, so we truly have a mining family and can talk mining when we get together. My other children are in more mundane lines of work and rapidly tire of the mining discussions. I?ve worked for operating companies: Pittsburgh Coal Co. (then a division of Consolidation Coal Co., and a company I believe both of my grandfathers had worked for), Island Creek Coal Co., and a research organization: Occidental Research Corp. I am now with Glenn Springs Holdings Inc., dealing with legacy issues (primarily environmental) related to Occidental?s previous mining operations (coal and minerals). As such, I have a broad view of the industry and the critical changes that are shaping our industry.

The paper point out how APC (Advanced Process Control) can be implemented in a stepwise fashion, where each step demonstrates a return and builds towards the overall achievable benefit. Initial efforts focus upon areas that demonstrate the highest potential for quick payback. By attacking small, contained scope, the APC solution is manageable from both a commercial and technical perspective. While this approach results in a slower implementation with correspondingly delayed payback, it provides tangible benefit and addressees the fiscal reality of many operations.

Few departments of mining, metallurgical or petroleum engineering in the United States have critical mass. Cost per student credit hour (SCH) in departments across the country are usually the highest among engineering departments, which are the highest on campus. Almost all departments are operating at fixed costs and enrollments could easily double without incurring much additional cost. However, the cost per SCH would remain unacceptably high and the probability of doubling enrollment is nil. Declining enrollment is a more likely future. The pressure to reduce SCH from university administration is unrelenting. And it has the potential for doing serious damage to program quality when standards and requirements are lowered in attempts to maintain enrollments and increase retention.
