"The Con-Rycon mine is located on the north shore of Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories within the present city limits of Yellow-knife. Development work on the Con property started in 1936, resulting in a mine-mill complex which produced its first gold brick on September 5, 1938. Since that date 5,000,000 tons of ore have been mined yielding 3,000,000 ounces of gold. At present there are 220 employees at the mine.MineThe mine has 1.22 miles of vertical shaft, 41 miles of level development and 10 miles of inclined raises. There has been 1,000,000 feet of diamond drilling in search of ore. The temperature at the 4900 level (4400 feet below sea level) is 68 deg. F.The present mining method is cut and fill. The majority of the ore mined today passed through an internal winze before reaching the main shaft. The long haulage and double handling will be eliminated with the completion of a new shaft presently under construction to the 5800 level.MineralizationThe ore treated today is from the Campbell shear 1vhich is characterized by lenses and veinlets of coarse textured quartz containing some carbonate, sulphides and finely disseminated as well as visible gold. This paper presents a review of several models of roadheaders being used in today?s tunnel projects. The features of different models of roadheaders are presented and compared. Roadheader size and cutter power generally determine which roadheader is best for a particular job. We will also present a model for matching features of the roadheader to the anticipated ground conditions such that the most efficient machine is selected for the project.

Outline This paper will consider the implications of the mine closure provisions set out in the new Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act and draft regulations. A comparison will be made with the existing provisions in the Minerals Act and the mine closure policy of the Department of Minerals and Energy (DME). The paper will consider whether the new provisions have the potential for improving performance as regards mine closure. It will investigate the financial provisions requirements and the implications of these provisions for mines. It will consider the requirements for a social and labour plan and consider the implications of this for mine closure and its funding. It will analyse the provisions relating to the transfer of environmental liabilities to third parties and consider the implications of this in the case of closing mines and non-closing mines. Finally it will consider the issue of residual legal liability of a mining company once a closure certificate has been issued.

The selection of Sydney and Port Kembla for the First Ordinary Meeting of the Institute for 1938 was, no doubt, a recognition of the celebrations marking the 150th Anniversary of the first settlement of this country. In selecting a theme for my Presidential Address, I propose to depart from the precedents of my distinguished predecessors, as I feel that this year of celebration is the natural year for a brief review of the history and progress of the Institute.In July, 1892, the Amalgamated Mining Managers' Association of Australasia held its Annual Conference in Ballarat, Victoria, when Mr. Uriah Dudley, who attended as a delegate from Broken Hill, brought forward the advisability of the formation of an Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Mr. Dudley was authorised to take such action as he thought fit, and the result was the formation of a Provisional Committee in Broken Hill of men who were mostly members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. An evaluation of a nuisance-emissions-discriminating smart mine fire sensor system was made in an operating coal mine. These field evaluations were conducted to determine the sensor system's ability to discern nuisance emissions, such as diesel exhaust, emissions from flame cutting and welding operations or hydrogen gas from a charging station, from real fires and to compare the number of falsely reported fire alarms generated between the sensor system and a standard carbon monoxide (CO) monitor. The sensor system's ability to operate successfully in the working environment of an operating coal mine was also evaluated. The smart mine fire sensor system consisted of four sensors whose data outputs were fused with the use of a neural-network-type computer program. Long-term trials were conducted in a haulage way, a belt entry, and a track entry. The system functioned successfully in the belt entry, in accordance with its developmental goals, where the sensor system even discriminated events not anticipated during development. It was not totally effective in the haulage way and track entry, though, due to a combination of significant diurnal air temperature variations, dust, and mechanically induced vibrations. Also, deteriorating rib conditions contributed to operational problems in the haulage way evaluation. In general, the smart mine fire sensor provided nuisance emissions discrimination and was shown to be a viable new approach for mine atmospheric monitoring, enhancing miner safety. This paper describes the in-mine evaluation of the smart mine fire sensor system and discusses recommendations for improving the system.

The problem of determining the optimum exploitation life of machinery, namely the optimum time for machinery and equipment replacement, represents a complex and highly responsible engineering task. Taking into consideration the situation prevailing at coal pit mines in Yugoslavia, the tasks of this class are very complex and difficult. To make a decision on replacement of capital equipment and machinery, such as bucket wheel excavators within the mentioned systems, understands a management task of utmost responsibility. It requires high professional and analytical knowledge as well as the reliable arguments, based on multidisciplinary professional approach. In this paper, the authors present their views on the problem of establishing the optimum exploitation life of bucket wheel excavators, offering an algorithm, based on dynamic programming, as a solution. Breaks in coal slurry impoundments can threaten the lives and health of area residents, destroy homes and businesses and contaminate water supplies. This dangerous potential looms over coalmining regions in West Virginia and throughout Appalachia. The Coal Impoundment Project was begun in June 2003 to provide an inventory and mapping of active and abandoned impoundments in West Virginia. The project also provides the public with specific information about the impoundments in their communities. It is dedicated to alerting residents of danger and evacuation plans, reducing risk to residents and finding alternatives to impoundments. Since its first year, more than 100 impoundment sites have been added to the project’s Website.

Introduction More and more women engineers are joining the traditionally male mining industry. Are they successful? Do they encounter special problems? How do men in mining respond? How can the mining industry effectively use its female resources? What contributes to the success of a woman in mining? What can male engineers do to ease the entry of female professionals into the workforce? An STM survey conducted last spring provided some answers to these questions. All BS graduates in mining, mineral engineering, and extractive metallurgy from 1960-1979 were surveyed. Nearly 60% of the female graduates, from 17 universities, completed questionnaires. The women were asked why they chose mining, how they relate to predominantly male co-workers, what job skills they have gained, and what areas of work they most enjoy. They were also asked how problems of a two-career family are solved. Data were gathered on salaries, titles, specialties, and products handled. Respondents, assured of confidentiality, are identified only by title. Many male mining executives were also questioned for their advice to women in mining. Profile of the Survey Participant The "typical" female mining engineer works with coal, is employed by an operating company, feels she works very hard to prove her abilities, does not want to be treated as an anomaly, and someday wants to be an independent consultant. Of the respondents, 44% listed coal as the most familiar product, 12% said copper, and the rest listed products from industrial chemicals to oil. Titles varied widely but women managers are rarely found. However, the majority of the survey population graduated after 1976 and thus lacks substantial experience. Of 102 female graduates, only 25 graduated before 1977. Since then, there has been a steady increase. The American Association of Engineering Societies reported that in 1980 more than 100 degrees were awarded to women in minerals engineering. Education Highly Valued Twenty-two percent of the women surveyed had graduate degrees, 38% planned further education, and 12% listed a PhD as their goal. The majority of graduate degrees are in technical fields. There were only two MBAs. Five women intended to pursue law degrees, and one woman, with a mining engineering degree and an MBA, is a part-time law student. Along with advanced education, the women agree that production experience is needed for career advancement. However, only 28% of the women have worked in production. Many women, especially younger grads, commented that these are the toughest jobs to get. This is a universal complaint, from males as well as females, though women seem to encounter more opposition. Several women mentioned they were small or slight of build and managers tended to shy away from hiring them for production jobs. Two-Career Marriages The most difficult problem for two-career couples is relocation. Whose career takes priority? Fifty percent of the women said transfers or offers would be examined on a case-by-case basis, weighing pros and cons for both parties. The husband's career took priority with 47% of the women; their own careers, with 3%. These statistics conflict with comments from two employee relations managers. Both said most female engineers they've encountered are married to men who follow their wives' careers. Seventy per cent of the married respondents said their husbands were also engineers. Four said their husbands were engineers at the same company. Some male and female engineers met on the job; others joined the company as a "package deal." Both partners being engineers can ease relocation problems, since an area or company offering one spouse a job can often provide a spot for the other. A company may benefit by getting two new hires for the relocation costs of one. Most companies contacted have policies that allow married couples to work at the same division, but discouraged them from working in the same department. With 40% of today's marriages ending in divorce, one risk is that one or both parties may quit. One personnel executive said there were several couples, each spouse in a different discipline, who were work¬ing out very well at his division. However, he recognized the potential for problems if, for instance, one gets promoted and the other doesn't, or salary increases are unequal. The personnel executive said he has actively recruited married couples, and would again, were each person competent.

"PURPOSEThe purpose of this presentation to the Canadian Mineral Processors is to review gold heap leaching systems currently in use and discuss their applicability to Canadian ores. The author's experience with the development and operation of heap leaching spans the past four years at. Pinson, and visits to many ether heap leaches in the western United States.INTRODUCTIONBy way of introduction to the heap leaching system, I will describe in slight detail the method used at Pinson Mining in northern Nevada. This will be followed by a discussion of optional methods in use at other operations visited.The Pinson orebody is a finely disseminated, well-oxidized hydrothermal deposit. Gold particles are finer than 20- microns. The orezone hostrocks are metamorphosed and silici¬fied limestone and shale. Sulfides and carbonaceous materials are negligible.The Pinson open-pit mine has operated since June 1980. It produces 1500 tpd of C.I.P. mill feed averaging .10 oz gold per ton, and 1500 tpd of heap leach material averaging .025 oz gold per ton. Cutoff grades are 0.04 for mill feed, and 0.01 for heap leaching. Stripping ratio is 9 tons of waste and leach grade to 1 ton of mill feed.The project is located in northern Nevada at 4900 feet above sea level.,Winters are fairly severe, with freezing conditions affecting operations from early December through April. Although officially designated as ""high-mountain desert"" country, snow and/or freezing rain occur almost every week of the winter.To date, all Pinson production-scale heap leaching has treated run-90,000 tons of ore are stacked on 300 foot square clay leach pads. Cyanide leach solution is applied through ""wobbler"" sprinklers at .0025 gpm/sq ft for 60 to 90 days. The pregnant solution flows from the heap by gravity to plastic-lined ditches, into a collection sump and then through buried piping to the 2.2 million gallon pregnant solution pond."

In the HC FeMn production, better utilisation of coke and electric power is vital for reducing the production costs. The higher manganese oxides in the charge are reduced to MnO in the prereduction zone, where also the Boudouard reaction is active. These gas-solid reactions are to a large extent decisive for the total consumption of both coke and electrical power in ferromanganese production. In the present work formulas for calculating the Degree of prereduction have been developed for industrial practice. It shows that the typical Degree of prereduction is between 10-40%, but it may in good periods be as high as 60%. Statistical analysis has been done in order to find how various operational parameters influence the Degree of prereduction. A few parameters were observed to have an effect on the prereduction. Comilog ore definitely had a positiveinfluence on the prereduction, Comilog sinter and Mamatwan ore probably had a positive influence on the prereduction, all in relation to the average prereduction in the selected periods. Meanwhile, As man ore definitely, % H2O in raw materials and increasing Hd probably, had a negative influence on the prereduction. The findings for these raw materials were very much in coherence with the results of laboratory scale experiments performed, where the CO-reactivity of different ore materials was studied.

Risk management is an established loss-control methodology that has been applied successfully in many industries. Recently, interest in this structured approach has grown in the mining industry. The main objective of this research was to develop a risk-assessment process, which is a part of risk management, that can be used by the U.S. mining industry to more thoroughly characterize risks associated with haul truck-related fatalities. The assessment is based on historical data obtained from the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) investigation reports, which includes 113 fatal incidents that occurred from 1995 through 2006. The risk-assessment process used in this research involves the following basic steps: identification of the risks, risk analysis and risk evaluation. The preliminary hazard assessment (PHA) method is used in identifying and quantifying risks. Risk levels are then developed using a pre-established risk matrix that ranks them according to probability and severity. The resulting assigned risk value can then be used to prioritize control strategies. This paper is a part of a detailed study on risk assessment for equipment-related fatalities in mining sponsored by the Western U.S. Mining Safety and Health Training and Translation Center.

Several years ago, Hudco Industrial Products began experimenting with the idea of levitating a conveyor belt with a film of air, much like the puck on an air-hockey table. While conducting its research, the company found out that some Russian and Dutch companies attempted the concept during the 1970s. After studying those conveyors, Hudco determined that its design was better. The Hudco advanced air-supported conveyor consists of an air-tight plenum, or chamber, that runs the length of the belt. The topside of the plenum has a formed trough. It corresponds to the profile of conventional troughing rollers. Low-pressure air is provided to the sealed plenum from a low horsepower blower. This pressurized air is metered and released through the central portion of the trough and reacts against the underside of the belt. The differential pressure between the top and bottom surfaces creates the lift to support the loaded belt. Airtight covers are installed to seal the transported materials in the plenum trough.

Between 1989 and 1991, the greatest number of accidents in surface coal and metal/nonmetal mines involved haulage trucks. In 1995, the most frequently cited factor contributing to the 100 fatalities in these mines was powered haulage. In 1996, over 50% of the 84 Fatalities in mining that year were in surface mining. Because some of the world's largest mobile equipment is used in surface mines, and this equipment is involved in so many accidents and fatalities, new technologies are needed to alert truck drivers and people in spaces around the truck to the possibilities of collisions.

THE cyclone thickener has two important applications in wet washing plants: (1) water clarification, and (2) fine coal recovery. The thickener consists of a conical chamber into which the fluid is injected through a tangential nozzle at the periphery of the large end. The solids of the slurry are concentrated and removed from the apex of the cone while the "thinner" portion is discharged from a central tube in a flat head at the large end, fig. 1. The advantages of the cyclone thickener are that large volumes of slurry may be treated with small space requirements and that the underflow concentration may be controlled easily and readily to meet varying feed conditions. Control of Washery Water Solids Concentration: The first requirement, in the process of controlling solids concentration, is that the solids be removed from the body of circulating water at the rate at which they are introduced. Federal regulations require that methane liberated at the face be diluted and removed to maintain methane gas concentrations below 1 pct (CFR) in working places and intake air courses. The delivery and distribution of intake air at the face is critical for effective face ventilation. Improved techniques for monitoring the movement of intake air to the face are needed. A test system was developed and a computer program written for using a three-axis ultrasonic anemometer to measure airflow in a simulated mine entry. Results of tests conducted in the entry showed that the anemometer is a valuable tool for measuring mine airflow conditions near the face.

The effect of transition elements which form binary solid solution upon the recrystallization temperature of zirconium has been investigated. All additions raised the recrystallization temperature. A correlation is obtained between the logarithm of the rate of change of recrystallization temperature with atomic percent solute and the free atom ground state electron configuration of the solute element. ThE work of Abrahamson, et al., on dilute binary solid-solution alloys indicated a correlation between the free-atom ground state electron configuration of the solute and either the brittle-ductile transition or recrystallization temperature. These studies were carried out on bcc base materials. The implication is that the outer s and d electrons of the solute are the prime determinant of the absolute rate of change of recrystallization or transition temperature. Furthermore, the limit of linearity has been shown to be a function of solute electron configuration for recrystallization in iron and vanadium. To date no Complete systematic recrystallization study of dilute binary zirconium base alloys has been made. It is the purpose of this study to note whether the change in solvent structure from bcc to hcp will influence the correlation. It was also desired to learn more of the role of the electron configuration of the solvent on recrystallization temperature. PROCEDURE All alloys were made using 99.87 pct Zr with 0.01 Cr, 0.04 Fe, 0.006 Hf, 0.003 Mg, 0.003 Mn, 0.003 N, and 0.080 0 (132 BHN). The solute elements were 99.9 pct pure. According to the published binary phase diagrams6 and metallographic examinations at X750, all alloys used were solid solutions. The alloys were arc melted and remelted six times in the form of cubic 200-g buttons under an argon atmosphere. They were then hot pressed at 950°C to 0.450 in., upset pressed to 0.350 in., and annealed at 800°C for 1 hr. The specimens were then Blanchard ground to 0.250 in., removing 0.050 in. from each side. The grain size of the material at this stage was found to be 8000 100 grains per sq mm. The specimens were then cold rolled to 0.130 in. and cold pressed to 0.125 in., yielding 50 1 pct cold work. All alloys were then chemically analyzed for the principal addition. The interstitial contents remained at the values of the starting material when checked on random alloy specimens. The rolled sheet was cut into 6.75 by 0.25-in. lengths and heat treated in a gradient furnace for 1 hr. The gradient was 250o to 900°C over the 6-in. length, recorded continuously by six thermocouples resting on each specimen. Control was 3oC, accomplished at the hot end. The recrystallization temperature was determined metallographically using polarized light. The criterion chosen was the point on the specimen showing the first recrystallized grain at a constant magnification, X200. Specimens were repeated, and the agreement was found to be 3°C.
