In Bangkok due to the prevailing condition of subsoil (existence of considerably weak stratum at top part) deep-seated large diameter bored piles of over 50 m depth with 0.8 -1.8m in diameter have been mainly used for heavy structures such as high rise buildings, elevated expressways, flyovers and more recently for underground subway stations of the first Bangkok MRTA system. As a part of pre-planned quality assurance regime and retrospective investigation, integrity of the piles are tested to obtain the information with regard to the potential deficiencies of the constructed piles which may have formed during pile construction process or may have been attributed by other activities after construction of the piles. An overview of three commonly used non-destructive tests such as sonic integrity, sonic logging and high strain dynamic load tests on deep-seated piles in Bangkok subsoil is presented in this paper. Advantages and limitations of each integrity test are discussed.

South Africa and Australia are the biggest suppliers of zircon sand to the international zirconium industry. However neither South Africa nor Australia is well known for zircon beneficiation. Geratech Zirconium Beneficiation Ltd (GZB) continued with additional research on sodium hydroxide (NaOH) cracking of zircon sand during 2002-2003. In 2003 GZB started extracting zirconium from zircon sand by means of NaOH cracking on a commercial scale. Experience has shown that temperature profile and atmospheric control inside the furnace is crucial for the beneficiation of zircon sand. Silica carryover to zirconium chemicals could result if a high temperature is used. Once the sodium silicate is extracted from the sodium zirconate and dissolved in hydrochloric acid, two distinct routes can be followed to precipitate various zirconium chemicals. The most common route is to precipitate zirconium oxychloride crystals (ZOC), with subsequent purification from all contaminants (crystal route). Less known is the process (liquid route) that involves the direct precipitation of zirconium basic sulphate (ZBS). This route will yield a less pure product, with contaminants such as silica and titanium. An important factor in this route is the prevention of silica gel formation, which could hamper final product filtration. For applications like paint drying (zirconium octoate) or antiperspirants (zirconium hydroxychloride) low levels of contaminants have no effect on the final product. The advantage of the liquid route is fewer production stages compared to the crystal route. The disadvantage of the liquid route is that the market for the products will be significantly smaller. The optimum solution could be a plant design that could cater for both routes. Another example of an application of zirconium chemicals is the use of ammonium zirconium carbonate (AZC) in the paper industry. Zirconium basic carbonate (ZBC) is dissolved in ammonium carbonate to produce AZC solution. AZC is used mainly in European countries in the paper industry. For example, carton boxes were initially produced with formaldehyde as the binder, however, it has now been replaced with AZC since formaldehyde is considered toxic. AZC reacts with the cellulose fibres in the paper to act as the binder. The resulting product is not toxic, and printing ink dries very quickly due to the porous paper structure. Other applications of zirconium chemicals involve the use of acid zirconium sulphate tetrahydrate (AZST), zirconium orthosulphate (ZOS), potassium zirconium carbonate (KZC), and zirconium hydrous oxide (ZHO). Fluoride-based zirconium chemicals like zirconium tetra-fluoride (ZrF4) and hexafluoro-zirconic acid (H2ZrF6) are used in the aluminium industry. Zirconium oxide (Zr02) can be produced from any of the abovementioned precipitated chemicals via a high-temperature decomposition process. The physical properties of such oxides can differ tremendously, depending on the final application. The fired density of sanitaryware is typically 5.8 g/cm3, compared to milling media at >6.1 g/cm3. The required fired density is achieved by controlling the precipitation and decomposition conditions for these two oxides. The same applies to stabilized and mixed oxides, for example where zirconium oxide acts as an oxygen carrier in fuel cells.

THE {120}(001) texture has been reported in near 50 pct Ni-Fe alloys <0.004 in. thick1,2 and in copper 0.014 in. thick.3 This texture is one of two types of secondary recrystallization textures observed to replace a cube texture matrix and is desirable in Fe-Ni alloys because of its unique magnetic characteristics.1,2 However, the conditions for and mechanism of the {120}(001) formation are not well understood.3 During an investigation of the influence of alloying elements on the magnetic characteristics of 49 pct Ni-Fe alloys with a sheet thickness of 0.014 in., we have observed the growth of {120}(001) secondaries when strong deoxidizers such as aluminum and calcium were present. It is believed that this observation in unique and provides additional insight with regard to the mechanism for {120}(001) texture formation. Three alloys were prepared with electrolytic iron and nickel and contained a nominal 49 wt pct Ni. Alloy A was a straight binary Fe-Ni alloy, whereas intentional additions of 0.013 wt pct Ca to alloy B and of 0.59 wt pct A1 to alloy C were made. Ingots were forged at 1100 C, hot-rolled to 0.150 in. gage, pickled, and cold-rolled to 0.014 in. The reducibility of three different manganese ores with coke was studied. The three ores were reduced to different extents under the same experimental conditions. The investigations showed that in the temperature range of 900-1000 ×C, Fe2O3 in the ore was reduced to metallic iron. MnO2 was reduced to Mn3O4 in all cases except one in which it was reduced to Mn2O3. The kinetics of reduction was controlled by different mechanisms in the different ores. Temperature had a significant influence on the reducibility of the ores.

The REFLUX Classifier is used to perform particle separations on the basis of density utilising a set of parallel inclined channels positioned above a vertical fluidised section. In continuous mode, feed enters part way up the vertical section, while fluidisation water is introduced from below. Lower density particles are conveyed upwards and collected in an overflow stream, while high density particles segregate onto the inclined surfaces, settle to the base of the system and empty via an underflow stream. Pressure transducers are used to measure the suspension density in the vertical section. This suspension density is maintained by a pneumatically controlled underflow valve to maintain a target suspension density or ‘set point’.Previously, Galvin et al (2010) demonstrated the significant improvement achieved via a new laminar-shear separation mechanism, achieved by utilising closely spaced inclined channels in the REFLUX Classifier. For the separation of low-density coal particles from mineral matter, a channel spacing of 6 mm proved effective; however, for the separation of gangue minerals from much higher density minerals such as iron ore, the shear-induced lift needs to be even higher. In this paper, we examine the influence of two different channel widths on the continuous processing of an industrial iron ore feed in the REFLUX Classifier. It was found that when moving from 6.0 mm to 3.0 mm channels, the ability of the system to reject coarser gangue material and retain finer high density material across a particle size range from 0.125 to 1.0 mm was increased, resulting in a higher grade product.CITATION:Hunter, D M, Zhou, J, Iveson, S M and Galvin, K P, 2017. The TerraSpec is a compact field portable mineral analyser that uses non-destructive reflectance spectroscopy for mineral identification. The instrument uses and measures infrared and visible light that is absorbed by certain covalent and molecular bonds (AlOH, FeOH, MgOH, CO32-, OH, H2O and NH4) within the lattice of a mineral at specific wavelengths producing an absorption spectral profile. A variety of minerals can be detected including clays, micas, carbonates, and hydroxides as well as some sulfates and silicates. However, not all minerals are detectable, such as quartz and feldspar. Alteration minerals replacing volcanic rocks have been studied for several epithermal prospects in the lower Waitekauri Valley (Sovereign, Jubilee, Scotia and Jasper Creek) and a geothermal field in the Taupo Volcanic Zone. At the Sovereign, Jubilee, Scotia and Jasper Creek prospects previous XRD investigations determined well developed clay mineral zonation with illite in the west (Sovereign and Jubilee) grading into interstratified illite-smectite (Scotia) and smectite (Jasper Creek) to the east. Although the percent of illite within interstratified illite-smectite could not be determined and some illite-rich illite-smectite (&gt;90 per cent illite) and some smectite-rich illite-smectite (&gt;90 per cent smectite) could be misidentified as illite or smectite respectively, the TerraSpec survey determined the same zonation of illite to illite-smectite and smectite. Common chlorite, rare calcite and local kaolinite were also detected. At the geothermal field, the TerraSpec was primarily used to determine the occurrence of kaolinite, dickite and alunite, which form in acid conditions. Widely spaced (every 50 to 100 m) XRD results are in excellent agreement with closely spaced (every 5 to 10 m) TerraSpec results that further determined the occurrence of these minerals in previously unrecognised intervals. It also determined the occurrence of zoned smectite, illite-smectite, illite, and chlorite alteration. Overall, the TerraSpec is a rapid mineral identification technique that is very useful in delineating the occurrence and distribution of certain minerals in both epithermal deposits and geothermal fields. Although the TerraSpec cannot detect as many minerals as XRD, the TerraSpec allows data collection at a sampling scale and speed (real time) that is not practical by XRD.

The importance of incorporating fundamental principles of rock material response and failure mechanics into a pillar strength design model has been demonstrated. To accurately assess pillar strength, a model should account not only for the characteristics of the coal, but also for those of the surrounding strata. The interactions between the pillar and the surrounding roof and floor dictate ultimate pillar strength. Confinement, or the lack thereof, provided by roof and floor frictional end-constraint is one of the most significant factors in the strength of very wide pillars. The best conditions for end-constraint occur with ideally strong roof and floor. In this paper, it will be shown that weak roof and floor may decrease the ultimate pillar strength by as much as 30% compared to ideal conditions. Field observations confirm this pillar strength reduction in the presence of weak roof and floor. Furthermore, rock partings within the coal have a variable effect on pillar strength, depending on the parting strength. A competent shale parting within the coal reduces the effective pillar height, thus increasing the ultimate pillar strength; a weak claystone parting slightly decreases the strength. Imposed load distribution also has a significant effect on pillar strength, such that asymmetric pillar loading, similar to that observed in pillars adjacent to high extraction mining, reduces the ultimate pillar strength below that of equivalent pillars subject to uniform load distributions.

Roof bolter occupations in underground coal mines continue to experience overexposure to respirable dust. One potential source of dust in roof bolting operations is the exhaust from the roof bolter dust collection system. A wet exhaust conditioner (?water box?) has been developed to reduce dust emissions from the exhaust of the vacuum dust collection system on roof bolting machines. The exhaust conditioner consists of a muffler chamber and a water chamber with four internal partitions to direct airflow over the surface of the water. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducted a series of laboratory tests to assess the respirable dust capture ability of this device as compared to the standard exhaust muffler. To determine the dust collection efficiency, both devices were placed in the exhaust stream of a simulated roof bolter dust collection system. Gravimetric samplers were operated upstream and downstream of the exhaust conditioner and muffler to evaluate the ability to capture both respirable coal and limestone dust. Researchers observed a 41 percent reduction in dust concentrations for the water exhaust conditioner in the laboratory configuration. Significant levels of dust deposition in the sampling chambers may have contributed to this effective capture rate.

Many, if not most, of today&apos;s pollution liability claims are related to events ("occurrences") that happened in the past. This fact creates an opportunity to obtain a large amount of insurance coverage at essentially no cost. Furthermore, in many cases, this insurance coverage is readily available. Scenario #1 For some 15 years, an underground gas tank has had a slow leak. The leak has now been discovered because the gas has contaminated nearby wells. As a result, an expensive $1 million cleanup is required. In addition, a liability suit has been filed for damages due to the contamination of nearby wells. Consequently, legal expenses are being incurred. Are all of these actual and potential costs insured? Obviously, if you have a pollution liability policy in place, the above costs will probably be insured. I say probably because business liability policies are not uniform. But, what if you don&apos;t have a pollution liability policy and what if your current general liability policy excludes all pollution liability (as most of them do today)? Under these circumstances, it first appears there is no insurance for this $1 million cleanup and liability suit. But this is probably not the case. You may well have insurance coverage, and you may well have much more insurance coverage than you ever expected. And, the insurance that I&apos;m referring to is already in place. You simply need to find it and learn how to use this insurance - I&apos;m referring to your old policies. In many cases, old liability insurance policies provide coverage for claims made today, because these policies were written on an "occurrence" basis of coverage. In fact, most still are written this way. This means that the insurance policy covers bodily injury or property damage liabilities (as defined in the policy) arising out of&apos; "occurrences" or accidents that happen during the policy period regardless of&apos; when the claim for damages is made. Therefore, for insurance purposes, the key question is: when did the "occurrence" take place? If someone falls and breaks a leg, that is clearly an "occurrence." The broken leg occurrence is, therefore, insured by the liability policy that was in existence at the time of the fall - regardless of when the claim or suit is filed, if ever. However, the answer to this question is seldom an easy one when you are looking at a pollution claim. In our scenario, the tank had a slow leak over 15 years, but property damage was not discovered until now. The question of when the "occurrence" (as defined in the insurance policy) took place has been litigated and continues to be litigated in many courts across the country. But, most often the answer has been that, for insurance purposes, the "occurrence" is the entire period that the tank was leaking (15 years), even though the contamination to the water was not discovered until 1987. This means that the person or company that is insured can potentially use all of its general liability policies (if they are "occurrence" policies, and most were), which were purchased during the 15 years from 1972 until 1987. And, these policies will potentially insure all of the claims and related exposures that arise out of this leaky underground gas tank. Scenario #2 In our first scenario, the claims and expenses were insured by past general liability policies because the claims arose out of events in the past, which, in turn, caused damage. Let&apos;s look at another example. In this scenario, Company XYZ has received a request to help clean up a landfill site because 10 years ago, XYZ dumped some toxic substances at the site, which was totally legal at the time. XYZ has not dumped anything at the site since this time. Nevertheless, XYZ is now being required to contribute $2 million to the cleanup of this site. In this scenario, if you had purchased "occurrence" general liability policies 10 years ago, these 1977 policies would (potentially) apply to the current $2 million cleanup claim. And, the reason is that the "occurrence" leading to the 1987 claim took place in 1977.

An analytical procedure is presented for evaluating the stresses in linings of bored tunnels caused by kinematic soil-lining interaction. Three cases of interaction as produced by the following conditions are treated: (1) relaxation of in situ soil stresses near a lining following its installation; (2) overburden pressure at the soil surface; and (3) free-field soil response resulting from an earthquake. Non-dimensional formulas and graphs resulting from parametric studies are presented for practical tunnel design applications. The procedure is applied separately to a steel lining and a concrete lining for a site located at the lower end of Market Street in San Francisco through which a BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit)tunnel passes.

The evolution of surface mine layout configuration is a function of the schedules and sequence of material excavation within the optimized layouts. The production schedules and sequence of materials movement from multi-bench and multi-face operations are difficult to plan and execute. However, the ability to maximize the profit or net present value of an orebody is largely dependent on the mining schedule. The mining schedule will determine the life of the mine, the projected cashflows, and the investment requirements over the mine life. The pit geometries, pit expansion rates and the periodic volume of materials from different benches in a multi-bench, multi-face open pit mine determine the equipment requirements. The volume of materials excavated, as well as pit layout changes from circular and elliptical geometries of an oil sands mine were modeled using analytical geometric and parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) and solved within Matlab. The results show that the geometric values are almost the same as those obtained from PDEs for different pit configurations. The economic analysis shows that both the current mining system (CMS) and the cyclic excavator conveyor belt control system (CycEx CBCS) are viable with high NPV (= $3.20 × 1010), PI (> 19%) and IRR (> 29.02%) with short discounted payback periods (= 3.24 months). The CycEx CBCS option is more economic than the CMS option. Its NPV is 1.27 times that of the CMS option. The PI and IRR for the CycEx CBCS option are respectively 2.24 and 1.13 times that of the CMS option. As well, the CycEx CBCS option has almost half the DPBP of the CMS option. The CMS option has an operating cost of $1.386 per tonne ($2.774/barrel) while that of the CycEx CBCS option is $0.779/tonne ($1.558/barrel). These results show that the CycEx CBCS option is the better option for mining companies working on oil sands deposits to invest in.

The production of natural abrasives varied in quantity and value compared with 1976. Output of tripoli-type materials was approximately the same in both quantity and value. Special silica stone products decreased in quantity and increased in value. Garnet production decreased both in quantity and value. The production of emery increased and the production and value of manufactured abrasive material was approximately the same. Foreign Trade Imports of abrasive materials were 23% more in value than in 1976, and exports plus reexports increased in value 10%. Net imports, the excess of imports over exports and reexports, were $35.3 million. The volume and value of all abrasive materials exported varied.

The ore itself is gold associated with the sulphide mineral arsenopyrite and contains some pyrite, pyrotite, plus chalcopyrite. Proven and probable reserves at December 31, 1997 were at 4.04 million tonnes at 4.6 g/t and underground exploration continues to confirm the extension of the ore zones to depth."

In 2005, CANMET-MMSL used its pool of expertise in ground control, open pit and underground mine engineering, mineral processing, information technology and applied mineralogy to launch a mine-to-mill research project. The objective of the project was to optimize the distribution of rock breakage energy among blasting, crushing and grinding activities, thereby maximizing the efficiency of energy utilization within comminution processes. Tests were designed to demonstrate that this approach could reduce energy consumption, thus contributing to the reduction of green house gas (GHG) production in the Canadian mining industry. The project was accomplished in collaboration with DynoConsult and Dyno Nobel Canada Inc., a world leader in commercial explosives. Data analysis from 12 blasts (six with electronic and six with pyrotechnic detonators) in three different geological formations of a quarry (soft, medium and hard rock) shows that electronic blasting technology increases rock fragmentation by 15% (in hard rock) to 20% (in soft rock). A more uniform rock fragment size distribution is also obtained. The impact of the improved quality blast product on downstream processes of the quarry is a productivity increase of 5% in rock excavation and transportation, an energy reduction of 10% at the primary crusher and an increase of 15% of the primary crusher throughput. Extended to the Canadian mining industry, such results would represent a GHG emission reduction of about 0.05 Mt/y. A soft-sensor prototype, based on primary crusher data (i.e., energy consumption, throughput, feed and product size distribution) and a simplified computerized process model, was developed for on-line measurement of the rock operating work index. Additionally, 385 rock samples and specimens were collected and prepared to determine the tensile and compressive strength of the rock material, to evaluate the aggregate crushing work index and to examine the development of micro- and macro-fractures by means of binocular and SEM microscopy. Blast-induced rock damage was evaluated at the end of the laboratory-testing program. Even though a reduction of rock hardness of around 30% was observed after blasting, the impact of the blasting method (i.e., use of electronic or pyrotechnic detonators) on the induced rock damage could not be observed. It is either absent or not perceptible with the accuracy of the measuring techniques and the number of samples analyzed.

Ultrasonic ranging sensors are inexpensive, have no moving parts, have no lenses to clean, are normally small and unobtrusive, and can measure distances through moderate amounts of dust, smoke, and humidity, so they are well suited to underground mines. In the work reported here, conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, researchers tested ultrasonic ranging sensors for their abiity to define rib line features for computer-aided navigation of underground mine mobile equipment. The investigation began with laboratory tests of field of view, angle of incidence, intersensor variation, and ranging accuracy of the individual rangers in a ring array produced by Denning Robotics of Wilmington, MA. The results showed that the sensors have good accuracy and low variability. Additional experiments at AMAX&apos;s Henderson Mine showed the sensors could accurately and reliably measure the distance to mine features, including convex and concave corners and rib intersections. The results showed that when used properly, the ranger data are accurate enough for reliable mine vehicle navigation When used incorrectly, ultrasonic rangers do not provide the anticipated data. Therefore, this report explains the principles of ultrasonic range measurement, describes the ranger&apos;s strengths and weaknesses, and explains proper ranger use and data analysis.

This paper presents a compilation of physical properties of rocks from the Bushveld Complex. The database consists of more than 900 measurements each of thermal conductivity and density. The data are well distributed from localities around the Complex and most rock types are well represented. Thermal conductivity and density are shown to vary widely in the ranges 1.8-4.2 W m-1K-1and 2600-4200 kg m-3respectively. Although only 190 heat capacity measurements are available, this parameter is quite uniform for most rock types present, 800-900 J kg-1K-1, except for chromitite, which has a lower average, 750 J kg-1K-1. Rocks encountered in deep platinum mines are particularly well characterized and this has important implications for prediction of mine refrigeration requirements. The heat flux into a semi-infinite region with properties typical of the Bushveld Complex as a function of time is substantially lower than an equivalent model for the Witwatersrand Basin.

Gold deposits in Interior Alaska are commonly coincident in time and space with reduced, mid-Cretaceous granitoids. The True North deposit of the Fairbanks district is several km from such granitoids, but yields mineralization ages indistinguishable from the Fort Knox granite-hosted deposit. True North, however, resembles sediment-hosted epithermal Au, demonstrating the variability of intrusion-related Au deposits in metamorphic rocks. The True North deposit (14M tons at 1.5 gpt) is hosted within a carbonaceous thrust complex separating eclogite facies from amphibolite facies rocks, located > 5 km from mineralized granite outcrops. The ores contain anomalous Sb, As, and Hg (stibnite is the most common sulfide) with ankerite-sericite alteration in steep NE-striking ?feeder? shears and low angle thrust shears. Nearest hornfelsed rocks are located > 1 km away, and across several high-angle faults. Fluid inclusion data indicates trapping temperatures of ~250C from low-density, low-salinity fluids at P < 0.5 kb. Au was originally present as solid solution in sulfides; minable ores are restricted to the oxidized upper 100 m of the deposit. The considerable differences between this deposit and the temporally equivalent Fort Knox intrusion-hosted deposit indicate no one description adequately characterizes this deposit type.

During the last two decades, China has expanded its iron and steel industry very quickly, from less than 100 Mt/a steel production to over 700 Mt/a. It caused big increases in both domestic iron ore production and imported iron ore quantities year by year. The mode of iron ore supply has changed from almost all domestic supply to major tonnes of imported ore plus domestic ore supply. Over 200 blast furnaces with volumes larger than 1000 m3 each have been built and put into operation. Sinter machines have been enlarged quickly. There are now 135 sinter machines with =200 m2 sintering area each. Pellet production increased from 11.94 Mt in 1999 to 210 Mt in 2011, resulting from rapidly increasing domestic concentrate supply and rapid development of the grate-kiln process. The typical ferrous burden constitution is high basicity sinter plus pellets plus lump. The pellet proportion increased and the sinter proportion decreased gradually. A lot of technical improvements, like deep bed sintering, sintering with a high ratio of limonite, composite sintering, pellet process optimisation, a high ratio of hematite in pelletisation, blast furnace operation with low-grade ferrous burdens and hazardous element control, etc have been made to enhance iron burden quality and to reduce hot metal cost. Chinese iron and steel production is expected to increase slightly in the next few years. Its overcapacity should be controlled effectively. Given the variations of iron ore supply, pellet production will keep progressing in terms of production scale and pellet quality, the sintering process will be improved further by various measures to utilise different ores efficiently, and ferrous burden constitution will be optimised continuously to realise the lowest cost of hot metal production.CITATION:Sha, Y and Wang, Z, 2013. The widely accepted kinetic model for the gaseous reduction of hematite is critically examined. The formation of the wustite layer during internal reduction cannot be explained in terms of solid-state diffusion. Present evidence indicates the existence of a micropore system in the wustite adjacent to the magnetite with the gas/solid type of reaction occurring not only at the iron/wustite interface but also at the wustite/magnetite interface. During the partial reduction of dense hematite pellets, in a controlled atmosphere, porous magnetite and wustite are formed as products. The mean pore size, as measured by mercury injection, increases with time at constant temperature and with temperature increase over the range 6500C to 950&#176;C. The sizes of the pores indicate that Knudsen diffusion is the principal gaseous transport mechanism across thick layers of magnetite or wustite.The kinetics of the gaseous reduction to iron are consistent with a mixed control mechanism involving the interaction of gaseous diffusion effects with a first order reversible chemical reaction at the iron/wustite interface. Because of the larger pore sizes in the iron layers, ordinary molecular gaseous diffusion must be the principal transport mechanism. The usual experimental methods used for establishing the validity of chemical rate ~ontrol are incapable of differentiating between the mixed control- mechanism and exclusive chemical control.Some implications of mixed control kinetics are developed, including a predicted independence of rate on reducing gas pressure at higher pressures.INTRODUCTIONAn extensive literature review of the reduction of iron oxides has been compiled recently by Themelis and Gauvin (1962). From the large number of papers published and the widely divergent opinions of workers in this field, it appears that a simple unified quantitative analysis of reduction kinetics is not possible.
