The Institute is desirous of securing the photographs of Adolph Patera and Albert Serlo, two deceased honorary members of the Institute. All resources within the ken of the Secretary have been tried out to secure these photographs without avail. If any, of our members can give us suggestions which will lead to the accomplishment of the desired ends, such suggestions will be much appreciated.

Introduction and Literature Survey This is the second in a series of papers coming from this laboratory on the correlation of the low temperature tensile properties of tin-binary alloys with microstructure. These engineering data and those of the previous paper1 were obtained as the initial part of a long-range program to determine the changes in the fundamental mechanical properties accompanying the beta to alpha phase change in tin and its binary alloys below 13.2°C. Since it appears now that the more fundamental studies will be delayed,* and since no summary of the low temperature properties of these tin-base white bearing alloys was found in the literature, it was decided to publish all the engineering data thus far obtained. Accordingly, the tensile properties of thirteen binary alloys containing from 0.1 to 60 pet cadmium and 0.1 to 10.43 pet antimony measured at six temperatures from —196 to +23°C are presented here and their variations rationalized in terms of microstructure. A literature search showed that these systems had not been investigated at low temperatures, although both the tin-cadmium and tin-antimony2,3,4,5 and the tin-rich corner of the ternary system67 have been studied at room temperature. Hanson and Pell-Wal-pole5 and Homer and Plummer4 determined the tensile properties of alloys containing from 0 to 10 pet cadmium. The same authors3 determined the tensile strength and elongation in the tin-antimony system from 2 to 18 pet antimony at room temperature while Pell-Walpole et al.6,7 studied the properties of high tin and tin-antimony-cadmium alloys. Since there were many variables besides composition in these tests, it was difficult to make a valid comparison with the room temperature data of the present study, but in general the tensile strength and ductility values are in reasonable agreement. Pell-Walpole2 also determined the effect of grain size on the tensile strength of pure tin and 1 pet alloys of both antimony and cadmium. The true maximum stress was found to decrease exponentially as the number of grains in the cross-section increased. This effect of grain size was strikingly revealed in the present work, as indicated in a later section. Hanson and Pell-Walpole8 placed the solid solubility limit of antimony in tin at 3.5 pet at 20°C, increasing to 4 pet at 190°C, and then sharply increasing to 10.3 pet at 246°C (the latter being a peritectic point). Their results are in disagreement with those of previous investigators,9 and the discrepancy seems to lie in the micro-graphic observation of the second phase

A sampling technique has been developed for procuring a sample of sinter representative of the entire depth of the sintering bed. The sampling method involves the use of an open-bottom metal basket that rides on the grate of the sintering machine and when removed contains a sample of the sintered product. Additional data have been obtained to indicate that the tumbler test is a suitable means of measuring sinter strength.

TRANSIM II is a general purpose mining-oriented transport simulation program. It features the accurate modelling of locomotive tramming systems involving interferences and queue build- ups, as well as inter-level transport facilities linking bunkers of finite capacity. Features of the program are described, and a number of practical applications briefly reviewed including studies of optimal train capacities, pulling schedules, tip and bunker capacities, and operation of simple traffic-light systems.

This paper presents and discusses the results of thirty-one fracture toughness tests on Pennsylvanian Age Clay Shale. Two different orientations for this anisotropic material were studied and two series of tests were conducted, namely, 1. a test series to determine the effect of moisture content on fracture toughness, and 2. a test series to study mixed mode fracture. Increased absorbed moisture is found to reduce fracture toughness. Several analyses of mixed mode failure are found to give varying non-conservative predictions of failure stress intensity level.

The smelting of titaniferous ores for the past hundred years has not been successful because of thickening of the slags in the furnaces. The interest in the utilization of these iron bearing materials has been due to the extensive deposits which have been found in various parts of the world.1 The literature contains references2 to the use of titaniferous ores in blast furnaces. None of these attempts has met with success due to the lack of sufficient information as to the cause of failures and to economic considerations. Evaluation of the published information, as to the probable cause of failure in various attempts, has indicated that the presence of lower valence titanium oxide and formation of titanium carbide contributed to the failure. It was apparent that severe reducing conditions which are present in a blast furnace had been one of the factors for such failures. The previous smelting operations had as a primary objective the recovery of iron from these ores. Under these conditions the highest recovery of iron could only occur with severe reducing conditions. Application of Melting Point Data The application of the melting point data, from the system CaO-MgO-Al2O3-TiO2 reported in another paper,3 to the smelting of titaniferous ores required an extrapolation of these melting points due to the presence of other impurities from the ores. Likewise, a study of the effect of varying FeO and reduced titanium content of the slag was necessary before the data could be fully applied. The melting point data under oxidizing conditions had clearly indicated that a fluid slag with a melting point in the temperature range of 1370°C could be obtained. The smelting of a titaniferous ore had as a primary objective the production of a high titanium slag which was fluid and substantially free of iron and low in trivalent titanium. Since production of a high titanium slag was of primary importance, rather than the recovery of iron from these ores, the smelting concept could be altered to a marked degree. The ferrous oxide could be maintained at higher levels than is the normal practice in iron ores slags without being detrimental to the slags, although a loss in iron recovery resulted. During the reduction of the molten mixtures of ferrous iron and titanium, carbon acts as the reductant for changing the valence of the titanium and iron. The reaction can go further than in the case of the reduction which occurs in iron-titanium solutions. The formation of metallic iron removes iron from the system, so that the titanium oxide can be reduced to trivalent and divalent titanium oxides and also form titanium carbide which removes the titanium from the slags as a soluble constituent. The problem, therefore, resolves itself into maintaining the proper amount of ferrous iron in the slag thereby avoiding the formation of appreciable amounts of trivalent titanium and no divalent titanium oxide or titanium carbide. As described in a previous presentation and in various patents, the Minerals Sciences Div. of UOP, Inc., has developed a modified reduction roast ammonia leach process for nickel laterites. This process gave considerable improvement in extraction over the conventional Caron approach as practiced in Cuba, Australia, and the Philippines. This greatly improved response was obtained with a wide variety of ores. This paper describes the pilot plant flowsheet and reviews the design features unique to the UOP process. Operating results from pilot plant campaigns are compared with bench scale results. Operating problems and their solutions are also discussed.

F. W. Matthiessen, who, with E. C. Hegeler, of La Salle, was one of the creators of the zinc industry in the-United States, was born in Altona, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, Mar. 5, 1835. He was one of a family of remarkable brothers, two of whom were long absociated in this country with the sugar and glucose industry. Mr. Matthiessen was educated at Freiberg, and came to this country in 1857 with Mr. E. C. Hegeler, after having, in company with that gentleman, visited the mining districts of Germany, Belgium, and England. They first went to Friedensville, near Bethlehem, Lehigh County, Penn., wherc attempts had already been made to produce zinc from the ore deposits found in that place. The ore was a he silicate but all attempts to extract zinc from it had failed. Mr. Matthiessen and Mr. Hegclcr were successful, but declined to invest their money in the zinc industry at Bethlehem because 01 certain local conditions. Hearing of the discovery of zinc -ore in the West, they visited both Wisconsin and Missouri and thought of settling in the coal region of East St. Louis. Finally La Salle, as being near to the Wisconsin fields and having much coal, was selected ae the site of the new smelting company, and on Dec. 24, 1858, the first shovelful of dirt was turned for the buildings of the new industry. The Civil War at first interfered with the manufacture of zinc, but afterward a lively demand for the metal arose and the future success of the institution was established. A large rolling mill was added in 1866, and in 1881 the manufacture of sulfuric acid as a byproduct was begun. Mr. Matthiessen also developed the Western Clock hlanufacturing Co. of La Salle, which manufactures the Big Ben alarm clock, from a small plant having 25 men to the present large institution which employs some 2000 workers. Mr. Matthiessen's affiliations with other metal industriefi have been numerous. But the contributions of the great zinc manufacturer to the causes of philanthropy and education have made his name known throughout the country, beyond industrial circles. He has given to the city of La Salle probably a sum total of $500,000 in various benefactions. Among the objects of his philanthropy were the La Salle-Peru Township High School, which he has made a model institution of secondary education for the entire United States; also the Tri-City Hygienic Institute of La Salle, Peru, and Oglesby, Ill., which he endowed for $200,000 This Hygienic Institute, which is unique in the United States, has a traincd staff of health officers, bacteriological laboratory, medical library, infant welfare station, milk station, free dental clinic, school nurse, and isolation hospital. Mr. Matthiessen was elected mayor of the City of La Salle three times and gave generously to the municipality of which he was the head. He also saved for the people of Illinois one of the great scenic districts of the state, Deer Park, with its cafions and natural beauties, which he con-verted into a model scenic resort, and the proceeds of which he gave to the charities of the Tri-Cities in which he lived. He died on Feb. 11, 1918.

Meetings of this committee were held at the Institute headquarters on April 18, May 2 and 15, and June 19. At the meeting of June 19, the Secretary reported that letters of invitation to apply for membership in the Institute had been sent to all the alumni of the School of Mines of Columbia University and also to all State Mine Inspectors and their deputies. He also reported the securing of lists of the alumni of the Harvard Engineering Schools, and of the Mining Schools at Houghton, Mich. ; Butte, Mont. ; State College, Pa.. ; Seattle, Wash.; Fayetteville, Ark. Laramie, Wyo.; Montreal, Canada, and Worcester and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institutes. Arrangements were made to invite all these to join the Institute. It. was suggested that a member of the Institute resident in Australia be appointed to this Committee, also one from Japan. Attention of the members of the Committee was drawn to the fact that letters requesting others to join the Institute will be written in the offices of the Institute if desired. The applications for membership received recently have been as follows: March, 30; April, 62; May, 70; June, 54. The next meeting will be held July 17. THOMAS T. READ, Secretary.

The Purpose of this paper is to present an overview of research underway at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory to investigate some of the more attractive options for controlling trace element contamination of coal refuse drainages. * The control methods under consideration include chemical and physical methods to immobilize or remove undesirable contaminants prior to refuse disposal, the treatment of refuse disposal sites with attenuating agents to prevent the discharge of contaminated water, and the direct treatment of refuse drainage as it emerges from the refuse disposal site. The results from these laboratory studies suggest that many of these techniques are technically feasible for controlling trace element contamination of refuse dump drainage.
