The shortage of adequate construction sites and their difficult location has compelled many engineering structures to be planned in old mining areas in Japan. This paper shows, first, the characteristics of the excavated underground environment and next, the necessary preventive measures during construction of surface structures. Where the depth of a mined out area is relatively shallow, there is a tendency of cave-in consequent to surface loadings. The effect of surface loadings is inversely proportional to the depth of goals. Finally, a power plant project is studied as an example.

JET piercing is a licensed process developed by Linde Air Products Co. Experiments with this method lapsed during World War II, but in the decade that followed the process was expedited. Two types of drills mount the jet piercing equipment for blastholes. The turntable of one machine rotates the complete stem system as well as the blowpipe, which emits three individual flames at different levels. Depth penetrated is limited by length of the blowpipe mounted in the rotary mechanism. This machine has successfully drilled blast- holes in Minnesota taconite.

Geologists take the role of mine geologist when they apply their science to the design and operation of a specific minerals project. In doing so, they use the entire spectrum of procedures in economic geology and engineering geology to deal with a specific system of orebodies and associated environment. The objectives are established by stages in the life cycle of a mining operation as it goes from a prospect to a development project and on to a mine. This paper summarizes the elements of a mining geologist's role, with examples highlighted from the preceding papers.

A piece of arid, strip-mined land in southeastern Washington recently yielded over 22 bushels of winter wheat per acre-without irrigation. The surprising crop yield is the product of an innovative reclamation technique-one of several methods now being developed as alternatives to traditional reclamation. Conventional reclamation methods are not always successful on strip-mined acreage in the arid West. Replanting native vegetation usually requires fertilizer and irrigation-both energy-intensive commodities in arid regions. Now, promising alternatives which rely solely on rainfall for irrigation are being offered by two research teams.

With over one year experience, Western Deep Levels Ltd., reports satisfactory operation with new features of its 200,000 ton per month gold reduction plant. Western Deep is Anglo American group's newest gold mine. It is situated 43 miles west of Johannesburg on the West Wits Line and will ultimately be extracting ore from a depth of 13,000 ft. Although the plant was put in production in March 1962, after a three month break-in period, construction of the fifth milling section was not completed until last month.

Gravitational field anomalies have been observed over many igneous intrusives of medium (4000 sq km) to small (100 sq km) size in outcrop area. These studies give good results because the residual anomalies can be separated from larger-scale crustal anomalies and density contrasts usually are present. Although unique solutions are not possible, the analysis of the gravity anomalies place important limits on both the areal and depth extent of the intrusive bodies. Of all possible geophysical techniques, gravity studies offer the most promise in the determination of the shape in depth of intrusive bodies.

Transportation cost is a key factor in both the profitability and competitiveness of coal marketing. With coal exportation growing rapidly, moisture control is important. Although in some cases, too much moisture reduction can lead to losses in transportation and pollution problems, there is normally justification for reducing moisture by mechanical means as much as possible. This paper reviews current technology of dewatering coal fines and examines the comparative capabilities of screens, filters, and centrifuges. Financial considerations are stated and implications of capital and operating costs on selection are discussed.

Samples of copper-lead concentrates from the mine of Cia Minerals Santander, Inc., a Peruvian subsidiary of the St. Joseph Lead Co. were recently subjected to special analysis. This concentrate was known to contain bismuth which, under some circumstances, might have incurred a smelter penalty. In this case, customers for the concentrate accepted it and requested a higher concentration of bismuth. Although chemical analysis would disclose the presence of the metal, it was not possible with equipment available at the mill in Peru to determine the mode of occurrence in the fine grained ores.

In the long range production planning at the Matsumine mine, a management target is to maintain a desired production rate and to keep fluctuations in copper and zinc grades within given allowable limits. A simulation model was developed to find, on a trial and error basis, how feasible and practical the target may be under certain constraints on the underground mining sequence. A number of simulation runs have been made to obtain the most suitable production rate for the long term. In this paper, an outline of the simulation model is described.

This paper outlines in a step-by-step approach all of the major tasks to be undertaken for the design of a complex multi-seam open pit coal mine. Examples are drawn from three such projects in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales, Australia, where computer techniques for equipment production rate estimation, mining block layout, and mine scheduling were used extensively. The paper is divided into two sections - Conceptual Planning and Detailed Planning; and the various tasks associated with these sections are discussed in detail, with examples of typical problems to be overcome.

BEFORE World War I, and even prior to World War II, lithium was considered among the rare elements. Mining was limited to exploitation of a few well selected sources of rich minerals recoverable by hand cobbing methods. Within the past five years the situation has changed radically. Many new sources have been explored and developed, principally in Canada, North Carolina, and Southern Rhodesia. The prime raw material for lithium recovery is spodumene. In Southern Rhodesia, however, both petalite, a modified spodumene, and lepidolite, a lithium mica, are being mined in quantity.

THE Eastern magnetite industry has not failed in its contribution to the war program during the past year. Man-power shortage was the critical problem in maintaining production and for the last half of the year, owing to lack of man power, it was necessary for some mines to change from seven to six days per week schedule. At Cornwall, Pa., the mine operated by the Bethlehem Steel Co. produced approximately 2,000,000 tons of crude ore and 1,200,000 tons of iron ore concentrates, a decrease of about 10 per-cent compared with the previous year. Railroad haulage in the open-pit at this mine was discontinued, being replaced by Mack trucks of approximately 30 tons' capacity. At the Mt. Hope mine in New Jersey, the Warren Foundry and Pipe Corp. produced about 195,000 long tons of crude ore obtaining 70.000 long tons of lump ore and 35,800 long tons of concentrates. An additional 24,500 long tons of concentrates was produced from a stock pile of 47.000 long tons of crude ore accumulated during the latter half of 1943, following the fire in their old dry mill. This is a story of progress through research, invention and innovation-progress that made a small mine in Missouri into a large and prosperous corporation. The St. Joseph Lead Co. was founded in Borne Terre, Missouri, in 1864. At that time, the mine consisted of a narrow trench eight feet deep; the mill was a hand-operated jig; and the smelter, a charcoal oven with a sloping hearth. During the first year, production was suspended for two months because of an invasion by the Confederate army. There have been few interruptions since that time.
