A large room-temperature mechanical-hysteresis effect under cyclic tensile loading was observed in zivconium specimens prestrained at 77°K so as to form large numbers of (1121) twins. The observed hysteresis loss was a maximum when the prestrain was just under 1 pct It also depended strongly on the maximum applied cyclic stress, but only moderately on loading rate and temperature (-72°to 100°C). The phenotnena have also been studied in terms of the elastic aftereffect where the data has been found to cotlforln closely to the functional relationship between strain and time, c = -RT/a In tank ft. t to)/Zr, for strains cts large as about 10-4 This eyication can be derived directly from the strain-rate equation There may be important commercial implications to the present discovery since it appears that within rather wide limits it may be possible to obtain any desired magnitude of damping capacity in zirconium melal. The damping propevties may also be given directional characteristics. It is shown that the observed anelaslic phenomena can he explained on the assumiplion that they are the resuilt of stress-induced twin-boundary movements in which the average twin increases its thickness by only a few percent. In polycrystalline zirconium, a grain is least favorably oriented for slip when its basal plane, containing the (1130) slip directions, lies nearly perpendicular to the principle normal stress. Mechanical twinning is favored by this orientation and under simple tensile deformation at room temperature the primary twinning mode is {1012).' The (1012) twinning shear is small (0.17) so that, during deformation, twin growth does not greatly enhance ductility. At 77°K, on the other hand, the predominant twinning mode shifts to {1121), and many thin (1121) twins can form at small strains.' Twins thus nucleated can grow readily during subsequent room-temperature deformation and permit easy deformation in unfavorably oriented grains. In addition, the (1131) twinning shear is large: 0.63. These facts have lead to a process' for greatly improving the room-temperature ductility of zirconium when it contains a sizable fraction of grains with basal planes nearly normal to the stress axis. Optimum results are obtained by slightly less than 1 pct prestrain. The effect is large so that a 50 pct elongation increase is readily attained. A large room-temperature mechanical-hysteresis effect has also been observed in zirconium specimens prestrained at 77°K. The present paper is concerned with some aspects of this effect which the experimental observations strongly indicate is primarily the result of strain-induced {1121) twin-boundary movements. This clearly suggests that mechanical twins formed by plastic deformation can cause anelastic effects similar to those previously observed2 for annealing twins and twins associated with phase transformations. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES All specimens were prepared from arc-melted sponge zirconium plate stock as previously described,3 which has a preferred orientation with basal planes aligned parallel to and uniformly distributed around the rolling direction. Both lonti-tudinal and transverse tensile specimens, with axes parallel and transverse, respectively, to the plate rolling direction, were cut from this plate. In a longitudinal specimen most grains are favorably oriented for slip, while in a transverse specimen a large fraction are unfavorably oriented. Prestraining at 77°K was performed in two ways. In one, annealed zirconium plate stock was cooled in liquid nitrogen and then rolled in the transverse plate direction to strains varying from 0.5 to 12 pct. Cylindrical 1/8-in.-diameter by 1-1/4-in.-gage-length tensile specimens were machined from this material. In the other, previously machined tensile specimens were prestrained in tension at 77°K between 0.2 and 3.8 pct. Type FA 25-12 SR4 strain gages were cemented to all specimen gage sections. All tests were performed on an Instron testing machine of 10,000-lb capacity. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Fig. 1 shows a typical two-cycle room-temperature stress-strain diagram for a specimen prestrained 0.65 pct by rolling at 77°K. The maximum stress in both cycles was 14,500 psi. Note that in the first cycle the loading and unloading curves are unsymmetrical so that a residual strain, er, remains after unloading. Electrodiffusion in y cerium reported by Henrie has been confirmed and a Preliminary estimate made of the relative rates of electrodiffusion of iron, cobalt, and nickel. These diffuse to the anode at rates decreasing in that order. In addition, copper and manganese exhibit slow, but detectable, diffusion to the anode and molybdenum exhibits detectable diffusion to the cathode. The electrodiffusion of carbon, .zirconium, antimony, magnesium , and silicon in y cerium could not be detected. Iron and cobalt diffuse in y cerium at rates proportional to the current density and with no apparent dependence on temperature. Decreasing polarization of iron and cobalt with increasing temperature, which cancels the expected rate increase, would account for this behavior. The electrodiffusion rate of iron in y uranium and in E plutonium has been measured. Diffusion of iron is anode-directed. Tin was found to diffuse to the cathode, in y uranium, at an appreciable rate. In all of these solvent metals, negative ions diffuse to the anode and positive ions to the cathode. The potential field effect appears to account satisfactorily for these results. FROM early experimental work summarized by Jost1 and Seith,2 the driving force for electrodiffusion was attributed to the potential field acting on ions in a metal. More recently, Heuman,3 Wever,4 and Huntington5 have shown that momentum interchange between conduction electrons and mobile entities in the metal contributes to electrodiffusion. Electron momentum interchange is anodically directed and the direction of diffusion resulting from the field force is dependent upon the charge on the diffusing entity. These two effects may either reinforce or oppose each other. Glinchuk6 has pointed out that momentum transfer in defect conductors should be cathode-directed and this appears to be the case as demonstrated by wever's4 work on iron. Barnett's7 work, on the other hand, indicates that, even in defect conductors, electrons show a negative E/m ratio when accelerated with respect to the lattice and should lead to anode-directed momentum transfer. In discussing this problem, Wever and seith8 suggest that defect electrons interact preferentially with activated ions so as to allow a net movement toward the cathode while still maintaining an electron momentum transfer in the anode direction. Williams and Huffine9 and Henriel0 have demonstrated that electrodiffusion may be useful for purification of yttrium and cerium. In yttrium, Williams and Huffine note that movement of several metallic impurities toward the anode is in keeping with observations in most other metallic systems and indicates that yttrium remains a normal electronic conductor at least to 1230°C. Close inspection of their data shows, however, that oxygen, nitrogen, and the transition elements diffused toward the anode, while nontransition elements diffused toward the cathode. This suggests that potential field effects may have been appreciable. The present work was concerned with the applicability of electrodiffusion as a technique for purification of plutonium, but, because of the obvious hazard inherent in work with this metal, experiments to develop the technique were carried out using cerium and uranium. The results of electrodiffusion measurements on these metals and on plutonium are reported here. EXPERIMENTAL The metal specimens prepared for this work were 6 in. long, 1/4 to 1/2 in. wide, and 1/16 to 3/32 in. thick. The uranium specimens were machined from a bar which analyzed 310 ppm Fe and the electrodiffusion of iron was followed by spectrographic and by chemical analysis. Cerium and plutonium specimens were cut from sheet rolled from ingots obtained from molten salt-metal equilibrations during which radioactive tracers were introduced. The electrodiffusion of the tracers was subsequently determined by counting methods. The specimens were electrolyzed between nickel electrodes containing resistance heaters used to equalize the specimen and electrode temperatures, thereby reducing thermal gradients. The temperature of the electrodes adjacent to the ends of the specimen was measured with chromel-alumel thermocouples which were connected to the heater controls. The surface temperature of the specimen at a point midway between the electrodes was measured with a sapphire rod pyrometer, the output of which controlled the dc power supply. This assembly was enclosed within an evacuable chamber containing a quartz viewing window. The temperature of the specimen over its entire length could be scanned with a portable pyrometer through

The purpose of this research is to determine (I) the efficiency of small banks of enriched gar driven by methane in displacing oil from a porous medium and (2) the effects of variation in bank size and composition of that efficiency. Most of the experiments were conducted in a sand-packed tube 20-ft long and 1/2-in. in diameter. The hydrocarbon system generally used was methane, butane and decane at 2,500 psia and 160°F. The results of these experiments indicate that, in the regions contacted by the gas, a small bank of an oil-miscible gas driven by methane can displace all of the oil in a piston-like manner. If the enriched gas is of such composition as to remain immiscible with the oil, displacement of oil is less efficient than for the miscible case, and the gas bank travels through the sand with a velocity less than that of the driving gas. These data along with theories discussed imply that smaller banks and less total gas are required when the enriched gas and oil are miscible. INTRODUCTION Widespread application of enriched-gas drive to the recovery of oil rests upon a key factor — the use of limited quantities, or "banks", of enriched gas. At the present time, the value of liquefied petroleum gas or other enriching agents discourages their use in a continuous injection technique, or even in a large bank, except in a few isolated reservoirs. If small banks of enriched gas driven by methane were as effective in displacing oil as is continuous injection, the enriched-gas drive process might be applied to a larger number of reservoirs. Previous research on the mechanics of the enriched-gas drive process reported by Stone and Crurnpl and by Kehn, Pyndus and Gaskell has utilized continuous injection of enriched gas. This work has shown that two types of displacements occur. With gases containing sufficient intermediates. the oil is displaced misciblv and complete recovery is obtained from the regions swept. When gases are used which contain insufficient intermediate hydrocarbon for miscible displacement, oil is displaced immiscibly. In the latter type, selective solution of the intermediate hydrocarbons causes a swelling and reduction in viscosity of the oil and leads to an increased recovery over that obtained by dry-gas (methane) drive. The size of the enriched-gas bank necessary for efficient displacement of oil is determined by those factors which cause deterioration of the bank. A differentiation may be made between those factors which operate on a microscopic scale and those which act on a macroscopic scale. On the smaller scale, the enriched gas mixes in the direction of flow by diffusion and convection with the fluids immediately preceding and following it. On the larger scale, the gas may by-pass the oil by flowing through permeable streaks, by overriding the oil because of density difference, or by fingering because of unfavorable viscosity ratios. In such cases, the enriching material tends to mix with the oil both laterally and in the direction of flow. The increase in effective area available for diffusion and dispersion of the enriching components leads to a faster degradation of the bank and a need for a larger bank than is necessary for those cases in which no by-passing occurs. The effects of such macroscopic factors in the deterioration of enriched-gas banks have been reported in a separate paper by Blackwell, Terry and Rayne. The present study was confined to the factors which operate on the smaller scale, in particular to the behavior of banks of enriched gas in sands uniformly swept by the gas. Experiments were designed to answer the following questions. 1. Can small banks of enriched gas driven by methane be used to secure oil recoveries comparable to those obtained by continuous injection of enriched gas? 2. What is the optimum bank size (the minimum bank size necessary to obtain a recovery comparable to that obtained by continuous injection of the same enriched gas)? 3. How many total pore volumes of gas must be injected to obtain the maximum recovery when the optimum bank size is used? 4. What is the effect of varying the number of enriching components in a gas bank? This report describes the experimental investigations and discusses the results in terms of their significance to reservoir behavior.

The many factors that control bumping must be carefully studied for each coal seam where bumps occur, and specifications known to exclude bumping should be incorporated in the mining plans. This calls for complete knowledge of the seam's characteristics and its adjacent strata, and in many instances these characteristics are not revealed until the seam is actually mined. Pressure and shock bumps, the two general types, occur jointly and separately. In this discussion no differentiation will be made. Whether pressure or shock, they are treated as bumps, and both must be eliminated. Bumps in mines have occurred in several places throughout the coal fields of the world. A study of many of these occurrences indicates that geologic characteristics, development planning, and mining procedure have contributed. But more specifically, there are conditions usually associated with bumps: thickness of cover, strong strata directly on or above the seam, a tough floor or bottom not subject to heaving, mountainous terrain, stressed and steeply pitching beds, and the proximity of faults and other geologic structures. Mine planning should incorporate these known factors (not necessarily in order of importance): 1) Main panel entries should be limited to those absolutely necessary to ventilate and serve the mine. This reduces the span over which stresses may be set up that will later throw excessive pressures on barrier and chain pillars when they are being removed. 2) Barrier pillars should be as wide as practicable so that they will be strong enough to carry the loads thrown on them when final mining is being carried out. 3) Pillars should never be fully recovered on both sides of a main entry development if the barrier and chain pillars are to be removed later. The excessive pressures placed on the main chain and pillar barriers by arching of the gob areas can result in bumping when these barriers are being removed. 4) Full seam extraction is better accomplished by driving to the mine boundary and then retreat-drawing all pillars. If there are natural boundaries in the mine—such as faults, want areas, and valleys —retreat should be started there. 5) Pillars should be uniform in size and shape. The entire development of the mine should call for uniform blocks with entries driven parallel and perpendicular. Only angle break-throughs should be driven when necessary for haulage, etc. 6) For better distribution of rock stresses and reduction of carrying loads per unit area, both chain and barrier pillars should be developed with the maximum dimensions. 7) Pillars should be open-ended when recovered. If they are oblong, the short side should be mined first. Both sides of a block should not be mined simultaneously, but under no circumstance should the lifts be cut together. 8) Pillar sprags should not be left in mining. If they are not recoverable, they should be rendered incapable of carrying loads. 9) Pillar lines should be as short as practicable. (Three or four blocks are adequate). Experience has shown that rooms should be driven up and retreated immediately. The longer a room stands, the more unfavorable the mining conditions. This contributes to bumping. 10) Pillars should not be split in abutment zones (high stress areas lying close to mined out areas) and if slabbing is necessary, it should be open-ended. 11) Pillars should be recovered in a straight line. Irregular pillar lines will allow excessive pressures thrown on the jutting points. Experience has shown that the lead end of the pillar line can be slightly in advance. 12) Pillar lines should be extracted as rapidly as possible. This appears to lessen pressures on the line and render abutment zones less hazardous. 13) Extraction planning should call for large, continuous robbed out areas. Robbing out an area too narrow to get a major fall of the strata above the seam tends to throw excessive pressures on a pillar line. 14) Timbering in pillar areas should be adequate but not excessive. Too heavy timbering or cribbing is likely to retard roof falls and throw excessive weight on the pillar line. 15) Experience has shown that when pillar lines have retreated 800 to 1000 ft from the solid, bumps can occur. Because this distance may vary in different seams, impact stresses should be studied for each individual condition. In any event, extra precautions should be taken against bumps in this area. This list of controlling factors may or may not be complete. It probably is not, but it covers most of the problem's significant aspects. The question is whether or not bumping can be eliminated. The answer is that bumping can be minimized and possibly eliminated if these and other established factors are thoughtfully considered and incorporated in the mining and extraction plans. If a mine has already been developed or the pattern set so that little change can be made, then it will be necessary to adjust to the most nearly practicable system that can incorporate the known factors.

Forty years ago the atom was split and the Age of Fission dawned. Uranium was the element used in this earth-shaking accomplishment. Thitherto almost unknown to the man in the street, uranium soon became widely and persistently sought. And the quest for this unique material is not likely to diminish during this century. To find is one thing; to own is another. Who owns uranium in the ground? Where no mineral rights in the land have been severed by devise, grant, reservation or lease, the uranium belongs to the fee simple owner of the land. But where there has been a conveyance or reservation of all or part of the "minerals", determining WHAT a substance is has been the traditional way of determining WHO owns it. What, then, is this element called uranium? The 1907 edition of Watts Dictionary of Chemistry calls it "a lustrous, hard, silver-white metal". Of nature's three prime divisions it falls within the embrace of the mineral kingdom - substances neither animal nor vegetable. In its natural state uranium always is combined with other elements or substances in the form of an ore mineral. May we, then, put to rest any doubt or question as to the nature of uranium and classify it for all purposes, including that of ownership, as mineral? Not quite! That self-same logic would find oil and gas primly ensconced in the animal or vegetable kingdom. Technically, oil and gas are not minerals but legally they have been classified as such. Why? The Supreme Court of Tennessee sought the answer in 1897 in the case of Murray v. Allard, 43 S.W. 355. After citing authorities pro and con, and while admitting their origin to be "decomposition of marine or vegetable organises" that court firmly concluded that since they were obtained by a form of mining, oil and gas were minerals. From the above example two elementary truths emerge. First, for purposes of ownership, uranium is and will be whatever the courts say it is. Secondly, the courts historically and currently favor a practical rather than technical test to determine the "mineral" character of a substance. So now we turn to the jurisprudence for enlightenment and definition. EARLY CASES ALLOT URANIUM TO MINERAL OWNERS Two early cases involving the ownership of uranium followed what had been well-settled mineral within the meaning of the conveyances involved, confirming ownership in the mineral owners. In 1956 the U. S. District Court for New Mexico in the case of New Mexico and Arizona Land Company v. Elkins, 137 F. Supp. 767, appeal dism'd 239 F.2d 645 (10th Cir. 1956), found that a 1946 deed reservation of "all oil, gas and minerals underlying or appurtenant to said lands" included uranium and thorium. The court reasoned that uranium and thorium, being minerals within the scientific, geological and practical meaning of the term, would certainly constitute minerals within the purview of the reservation. While agreeing that uranium and thorium were "minerals", defendants argued that at the tine of execution of the conveyance it could not have been the intention of the parties to reserve them because they had no commercial value in the locality and were, in fact, not known to there exist until their later discovery in 1950. The court re¬jected, as a matter of law, this "lack of knowledge" theory citing the Supreme Court of Kentucky holding in Maynard v. McHenry, 113 S.W. 2d 13, that: "The mere fact that a particular mineral has not been discovered in the vicinity of the land conveyed or is unknown at the time the deed is executed rules of construction and held that uranium was a does not alter the rule . . ." that a grant or exception of "mineral" in a deed includes all mineral substances which can be taken from the land unless restrictive language is used indicating that the parties contemplated something less general than all substances legally cognizable as minerals. Further, argued the defendants, the only feasible mining procedure for such substances was open pit or strip mining, which would destroy the value of the land for grazing or agriculture. Finding that the language of the reservation was clear and unambiguous, the court would not permit the admission of extrinsic evidence as to mining procedures required. Elkins is the first uranium case construing the granting clause involved. In 1958 the Texas Court of Civil Appeals at San Antonio, in Cain v. Neuman, 316 S.W. 2d 915, no writ, held that a 1918 lease conveying "all of the oil, gas, coal and other minerals in and under" the land involved covered uranium. The lease provided a royalty of 1/10th on "other minerals." "We find no Texas precedent which discusses uranium," said the court, "but the usual arguments that uranium is not embraced within a lease are that the ejusden generis rule excludes uranium from the meaning of the lease

Sanitary land filling has become one of the most widely used methods of disposing of solid refuse. A principal concern of regulatory agencies and the public itself is that landfill operations do not degrade the physical environment, including water resources, and the ground-water reservoir in particular. Knowledge of ground-water and engineering geology can guide landfill operations into suitable terranes or develop measures to compensate for natural limitations at a particular site. Experience and research in Illinois suggest four activities relating to landfill disposal that warrant attention by geologists and engineers: (1) regional delineation of favorable and unfavorable hydrogeologic conditions to facilitate planning and preliminary screening of potential landfill sites; (2) site evaluations, with considerations of geologic materials, topography, water levels, flow systems, and local occurrence and use of water resources; (3) research on aspects of the hydrogeologic environment that control effects of, or are modified by, landfills; and (4) formulation of practices in the siting, construction, and operation of landfills that prevent, mitigate, or isolate deleterious effects. The first two activities are basically in the domain of earth science, requiring the application of fundamental concepts of geology and hydrology and conventional site-exploration methods. The third activity, research, requires contributions from geology as well as other disciplines, including soil physics, sanitary engineering, and chemistry. The fourth calls for policy decisions by regulatory agencies and elected officials, using the contributions of scientists and engineers. Throughout history, man has disposed of unwanted materials by dumping. As urbanization has increased, haphazard dumping practices have given way to disposal under more controlled conditions because of increasing congestion of population and production of waste and greater concern for public health and environmental amenities. Many states and communities have already outlawed open dumping and open burning of refuse. The only practical methods of disposal of large volumes of refuse, therefore, are contained, high-temperature incineration, or burial in a sanitary landfill. In Illinois, regulation of solid waste disposal has been delegated to the Environmental Protection Agency. Each session of the legislature since 1965 has passed increasingly strict laws regulating waste diposal. As a result, the work of evaluating sanitary landfill sites has increased significantly for both the Department of Public Health, now the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Illinois State Geological Survey, which advises the Agency on matters of ground-water geology and pollution. In fact, our ground-water staff spends as much time on studies relating to waste disposal, primarily sanitary landfills, as on ground-water resource studies. Many other geological agencies are experiencing similar demands for increased assistance in solving waste-disposal problems. This paper summarizes some of the salient features of the sanitary landfill concept, describes activities of the Illinois Geological Survey in ground-water and engineering geology relating to landfills, and suggests policies that need consideration. A sanitary landfill is located and operated in such a way that vermin and pests, nuisances, and degradation of air and water are kept at acceptable levels. Some of the physical requirements of a sanitary landfill are all-weather roads for year-round access, fences to retain blowing paper, a daily cover of at least six inches of suitable earth material, and a final cover of at least 2 ft of earth material. Dumping into or adjacent to standing water generally is not allowed. Two common operating techniques are used. In the first, trenches are dug, the refuse is placed in them, and the earth removed from the trenches is used to cover the waste. In the second method, area fill, refuse is placed in low ground and covered with earth from adjacent high areas. The hydrology of the site is a prime consideration in locating sanitary landfills. Putrescible refuse, if saturated above field capacity, produces a leachate that usually has a high concentration of dissolved solids.2 As the leachate also acts as an agent for transporting bacterial pollutants, it constitutes a potential pollution hazard. To reduce the production of leachates, the topography of the landfill area should be such that surface water will not flow into or through the fill. Operations that will result in refuse disposal below or near the highest known water-table elevation may be required to take corrective or preventive measures to protect the ground water. In practice, under humid conditions such as prevail in Illinois, locations where disposal can take place above the water table are relatively few because surficial materials are commonly fine-grained, which permits slow gravity drainage and results in high degrees of saturation (100% moisture content) near the surface. At some sites, although disposal has taken place above the water table, ground-water mounds have developed, resulting in permanent saturation of the refuse. An accurate value of formation water resistivity R, is essential in calculating formation porosity and fluid saturation from electrical well logs. In the cases where R, has not been measured directly, it must be obtained from other data, e.g., the SP curve. This paper deals with another approach: how to calculate R, from the chemical analysis of the formation water. INTRODUCTION It is known that the resistivity of aqueous solutions of pure salts depends on their concentration and on the temperature; the concentrations are given in MPL (mg of solute per liter of solution), or sometimes in ppm (mg of solute per kg of solution): MPL = ppm X specific gravity. Values for different pure salts are available in the literature, but not for solutions of mixtures which are of practical interest. The major component of the dissolved material in almost all formation waters being sodium chloride, it is customary to express the resistivity of formation waters in terms of equivalent sodium chloride concentration, i.e., the concentration of a solution of pure NaCl which has the same resistivity at a given temperature as that of the formation water under consideration. Thus, the problem of calculating R, from the chemical anaylsis can also be stated as how to convert the other constituents of the solute into equivalent NaCl concentration. Salts dissolved in water are at least partly dissociated into ions, and do not conserve their identity. If known amounts of several salts are dissolved in water, the solution does not necessarily contain the same salts in the original proportion, but perhaps some other combination of the ions, along with free ions in solution. This is why the chemical analysis of formation waters is often given in terms of ions, as if all dissolved salts were completely dissociated. Our problem then boils down to how to convert the concentrations of the various ions to equivalent concentrations of Na' and C1-. Dunlap and Hawthorne' have proposed to convert the concentration of all other ions to equivalent Na' and C1-concentrations by means of constant multipliers; e.g., 0.95 for Ca"; 2.0 for Mg"; 0.27 for HCO 3-; 0.5 for SO, -, etc. Their factors were based on measurements made at 68F on 26 formation water samples from the Texas Gulf Coast, ranging in concentration from 1,500 to 75,000 ppm. The Dunlap method is widely used in electric log interpretation, and is often extrapolated beyond its original concentration range. A comparison of R, values calculated by this method and values actually measured on formation water samples has shown large discrepancies, especially at higher concentrations. Therefore, two new methods were developed at Sinclair Oil Corp.'s Tulsa Research Center to calculate equivalent sodium chloride concentration from the chemical analysis of formation water samples. FUNDAMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS The resistivity of a solution, or its reciprocal the conductivity, at a given temperature is determined by the charge, concentration and mobility of the ions actually present. Monovalent ions such as Na' or C1- always carry the same charge. Compounds of polyvalent ions, however. may show incomplete dissociation, e.g., NaSO; + Na' instead of SO,-- + 2Na'. This happens especially in more concentrated solutions. Only very dilute solutions are completely dissociated, as assumed in the chemical analysis report. At higher concentration, the degree of dissociation depends not only on the nature and concentration of the particular salt under consideration but also on the nature and concentrations of the other solutes. Mobility of the ions depends on the viscosity of the solution. It also depends on the degree of hydration of the ions, which in turn is a function of the nature and the charge of the ions and also of the amount of free water available per ion, i.e., the total ionic concentration. The net effect is that the conductivity increases slower than proportional to the concentration, even if a solution contains only one salt such as NaC1, and is different for different salts (Fig. 1). Conductivity can even decline with a further increase in concentration, e.g., if additional salt is little dissociated but ties up some of the free water and/or causes an increase in viscosity. In solutions containing more than one salt, the contribution of one salt to the total conductivity depends not only on the fractional concentration of this same salt, but also on the concentration of all other solutes. A perfect method would give the conductivity or resistivity of a solution as a function of the concentrations of all solutes present. This is so complicated as to be impractical, and a simpler method must be found which is of acceptable accuracy. The Dunlap method, on the other hand. is too simple because it askmes that at any concentration the contrih-

WHEN diamond drilling was introduced in the Rhokana mines in 1939 it was used principally for pillar removal and for completion of the upper portions of shrinkage stopes which were being affected by increasing pressure. This method of drilling long blastholes proved so successful that it was extended gradually to cover stoping, pillar recovery, and hanging cave work. BY 1949 virtually all the ~roduction of Mindola and Nkana was being obtained by this method. At the present time 87,500 ft are drilled each month by the 80 diamond drills in daily operation. Responsibility for control and issue of diamond drilling equipment and crowns, as well as tabulation of all performance figures, was taken over by a sPecially formed Roto drill department, which also investigated the problems encountered with this new method. To assist this department a fully equipped test chamber, Fig. 1, was established underground where performances of various types of machines and equipment could be studied under conditions as nearly uniform as possible. Since the establishment of this department, which was eventually taken over and incorporated into the study department, considerable experimental work has been done on every aspect of the subject. The problems can be classified broadly under four headings: improvement of drilling equipment, crown design, machines, and stoping layouts. One of the major problems with drilling equipment has been to eliminate vibration. Owing to flexing of rods in the hole, severe friction is set up on the back end of the 'Ore barrel and On any high spots in the rods, inducing harmonic vibration in the string of rods and causing the crown to chatter against the face. This not only causes premature crown failure but also reduces penetration speeds and increases wear on the machines and rods used. In the early days, when only holes of EX size were drilled, vibration was largely overcome by periodic greasing of rods and core barrel during each run, but with the change-over to the larger BX hole it became obvious that application of grease by hand was inefficient and time-consuming, and attempts were made to perfect a self-lubricating core barrel. A series of these core barrels was made up and tested and a number of the latest type were used under normal operating conditions, but although footages up to 120 ft were drilled without refilling the overall performance was inconsistent, and the idea was shelved in view of the success of the stabilizer rods referred to later in this paper. At the same time tests were made with barrels 5 ft and later 6 ft long instead of the normal 2 ft. Although a slight improvement was noticed, greasing was still necessary. It was found that rod vibration increased as the core barrel became worn, and in an early test chamber experiment crowns drilled with a worn core barrel averaged 95 ft with a diamond loss of 4.76 carats, whereas the same type of crowns with a new barrel averaged 228 ft with a diamond loss of 3.13 carats. until then all BX drilling had been done with B-sized rods, but during a test on a string of BX-sized rods it was noticed that vibration was negligible. Because of the larger surface area of metal bearing on the sides of the hole, however, the friction and resistance of rods of this size rendered them impracticable on any but the most powerful of the machines, The use of stabilizers spaced evenly along the rods was the next logical step, and for this B couplings, see Fig. 2, were set with three tungsten carbide inserts 1 in. long placed around the periphery equidistantly and at an angle of 45" with a right hand lead. These were placed immediately behind the core barrel and then at 12-ft intervals, as it was found that vibration still occurred when the stabilizers were more than 15 ft apart. The effect of these stabilizers was immediately noticeable; holes were drilled with a minimum of vibration, penetration speeds were improved, and as it was no longer necessary to grease the rods there was a marked decrease in the overall drilling time for each hole. While tests were being made with the stabilizer comeb periodic were taking place with a set of tapered threaded rods, and because there was marked improvement in efficiency it was decided to incorporate the stabilizers and tapered threading in all new rods ordered for Rhokana. The feature of these rods is that only four full turns are required to tighten the coupling as against nine for the present type of B rods. Also, as they are self-centering it is virtually impossible to crossthread them. Each rod has a male 5" tapered Acme thread, Fig, 3, on one end and a female at the other, so that separate couplings are unnecessary, and every fifth rod has an

The Petch relation between the flow stress and the gain size is derived from a consideration of gain boundary sources of dislocations without the need of dislocation Pile-ups. Three mechanisms for inierpreting the yield stress: the gain boundary strength, the unpinning of Frank-Read source near a grain boundary, and the generation of dislocations from the grain boundary are compared and the condition of their equivalence is shown. The effect of the average angle of misfit of pain boundaries is found to be sma11 and so is that of the average angle of misfit of subboundaries having impurities. The effect of impurities on the ledge density in the grain boundary is treated thermodynamically and a relatwn is proposed for the variation of Petch slope with impurity activity. The effect of temperature on the Petch slope is interpreted as due to the change of ledge structure in the grain boundary. It is indicated that the effect of annealing temperature may be more important than that of the test temperature and therefore should be studied. The effect of plastic strain on the Petch analysis is deduced from a work-hardening equation in which the generation of dislocations has first-order kinetics and the annihilation of dislocations has second-order kinetics. It is concluded that the Petch slope will decrease with plustic strain if the rate of annihilation of dislocations is sufficiently large. Critical experiments which may shed light on the mechanism for the Petch relation are suggested. THE relation between the yield or flow stress, 0, and the grain size, l, was first proposed by all' and later studied more extensively by Petch and co-workers, who also proposed a similar relation for the fracture stress and deduced from these a grain-size effect of the ductile-brittle transition temperature. The microscopic mechanism used by all' and petch2 involves a pile-up of dislocations of like sign generated from a Frank-Read source. The yielding or flow takes place when the pile-up exerts sufficient stress at the grain boundary so that the plastic deformation can propagate from one grain to another. If the average strength of the grain boundary is ai and the average length of the pileup is lp, the Petch slope, k, is given by" where p is the shear modulus, b the Burgers vector, and v the Poisson ratio. This slope will be independent of the grain size if l/lp is a constant. This is possible, since, if the Frank-Reed source is situated near the grain boundary, lp = 1, and if it is situated in the middle of the grain, Ip = 1/2. cottrell,12 also using the pile-up mechanism, proposed that the stress concentration at the grain boundary will initiate Frank-Read sources near the grain boundary and in this manner a Lüders band can propagate from one grain to another. Assuming that the average distance between the Frank-Read sources and the grain boundary is 1, and the unpinning stress of the Frank-Read sources is op, Cottrell obtained the following Petch slope: This slope will be independent of the grain size if ls is independent of the same, which is not as obvious as the condition, Ip = I for Eq. [2]. In addition to this assumption, the direct relation between the Petch slope k and the unpinning stress, up, was recently questioned by Johnsonon grounds that it is inconsistent with the following observations: the independence of k with temperature and strain rate, and the small k in columbium, which, like iron, has a sharp yield point. As pointed out by ohnson," the most important objection both to the Hall-Petch mechanism, in which the strength of the grain boundary plays the role in yielding, and to the Cottrell mechanism, in which the unpinning of Frank-Read sources plays the role in yielding, is the lack of direct observation of the pile-ups. The dislocation structure in deformed iron has been examined recently in the electron microsope.'-' Dislocations appear to be generated from grain boundaries or other interfaces; they form clusters and tangles within the grain at very early stages of deformation, even in the Lüders band, if the deformation is slow or at normal and elevated temperatures. Although it is still too early to interpret bulk properties from thin-film observations, it does seem worthwhile to look for a mechanism for the Petch relation which does not require dislocation pileup. SUBBOUNDARY SOURCES In order to show that a consideration of grain boundary sources can lead to the same Petch relation as does the consideration of the strength of the grain boundary, we shall first discuss the case of a simple tilt boundary whose elastic properties have been studied in detail.17 The strength of a partially

Impurity-induced low-temperature recrystallization of cold-worked tungsten was inuestigated with emphasis on the influence of nickel on the reaction. Palladium, nickel, aluminum, manganese, platinum, and iron greatly lower the recrystallization temperature of doped tungsten, which zs normally very high, but the recrystallization temperature of electron-be am zone-refined tungsten wzre is slightly raised by conlacl with nickel. Recrystallization can be induced at low temperature by the presence of solid nickel on the surface of doped tungsten wire, but apparently not by exposure to nickel vapors alone. Approximately 200 ppm of Ni dijjused into 10-mil wires at 1200 from a deposit of nickel on the surface produced total recrystallization, whereas more than 600 ppm of Ni could be absorbed frotn a vapor source without altering the fibrous structure of cold-worked tungsten. Once initiated, nickel-induced recrystallization required a continued source of' nickel for propagation of the recrystallization front. The solubility of nickel in fibrous 10-mil W wire was approximalely 500 ppm at 1150' C, and the activation energy for penetration of the recrystallization front was 52 kcal per mole. In many applications the usefulness of tungsten depends on critical control of its structure. Cold-worked tungsten with the fibrous structure developed by suitable thermo-mechanical treatment has a low, but technologically significant, ductility. It has long been known1 that traces of nickel, and perhaps other metals, are profoundly deleterious in doped tungsten, because they induce recrystallization at low temperature, which produces a brittle, equiaxed grain structure. This effect appears to be an exception to the general observation that recrystallization is impeded and the recrystallization temperature raised by the presence of impurities.2"9 Previous studies7-'' of the annealing and recrystallization of tungsten wire have divided the phenomenon into prior recovery stages, primary recrystallization and secondary recrystallization. The present investigation is concerned principally with primary recrystallization which is defined here as the replacement of the fibrous structure of deformed tungsten by equiaxed grains. The objective of this study was to explore the nickel-induced recrystallization reaction in tungsten and attempt to elucidate its mechanism. As well, an effort to define which other elements give rise to low-temperature-induced recrystallization was carried out. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The procedure adopted for these experiments was essentially to bring nickel and other elements into diffusive contact with cold-worked tungsten wires. The process of recrystallization was followed as a function of time and temperature by light and electron microscopic observations. First the influence of nickel on the recrystallization temperature of arc-melted, zone-refined, and variously doped tungsten wire was determined by electroplating a deposit of nickel on the surface of the wire and annealing at a variety of temperatures for 3 hr. The chemical analyses of the tungsten wires used in this investigation are given in Table I. The surface of the tungsten wire was etched with Murakami's slution' and approximately 0.005 in, of Ni was deposited from a Watts-type low pH bath14 for the conditions of these experiments. Variations in plating thickness from about 0.001 to 0.005 in. had no discernible influence on the resulting structures. The wires were then annealed in an atmosphere of dry hydrogen to establish the recrystallization temperature. Concurrently, un-plated specimens were annealed to establish the recrystallization characteristics of nickel-free wire. The criterion of recrystallization was that the fibrous structure be completely replaced by equiaxed grains after a 3-hr treatment of temperature. This provided more reproducible results than use of the first recrystallized grain or a fixed proportion of re-crystallized structure as the critical observation. The structures encountered in longitudinal and transverse sections were examined by both light and electron microscopy at magnifications up to X32,000 using parlo-dion-carbon replicas shadowed with platinum for the latter method. Second, the influence of a variety of metals on the recrystallization temperature of 0.010 in. D alumina-silica doped tungsten wire, AW136-64, was determined. The elements were applied by electroplating whenever possible. Alternatively, they were vapor-plated on the tungsten wire and a greater thickness built up by coating with a dispersion of metal powder in nitrocellulose lacquer. Elements not amenable to either of these procedures were merely slurry coated on the tungsten. The recrystallization temperature was determined as above. Third, the nickel-induced recrystallization process in doped wire was studied more closely by electroplating 8 mils of Ni on 65-mil alumina-silica doped tungsten wire, AW153-NS10, and exposing the wire to temperatures of llOO°, 1200°, or 1300°C for various times in a hydrogen atmosphere. A circular recrystallization front, 'Onsisting of equiaxed grains, developed at the periphery Of the coated tungsten wire, and the advance of this front into the fibrous interior was studied. These experiments employed relatively coarse 0.065 in. D wire because the 0.010 in. D wire recrystallized too quickly to permit observation of the pene-

Miscible phase displacement of oil from reservoirs has been emphasized in the past few years. The reason for this emphasis lies in the high oil recovery attainable by this process. Removal of capillary effects in the reservoir leads to recoveries approaching 100 per cent in the area contacted by the miscible phase. The miscible slug process is one means of obtaining a miscible displacement. Here a band or slug of I,PG is injected into the reservoir prior to gas injection. The idea is to maintain the band of LPG "wedged" between the gas and oil phases and thus achieve a miscible phase displacement. A second method lor achieving miscibility is through the injection of a gas which is not miscible with the reservoir fluid but which develops a zone of miscibility in [he reservoir through mass trans-ier with the reservoir oil.' This mass transfer results in either an enrichment of the lean injected gas by intermediates from the oil or an enrichment of the oil by intermediates from a rich injection gas or one that has been enriched on the surface by LPG addition. We are interested here in discussing the process in which miscibility is developed at the displacement front by the evaporation of interrnediatcs from the oil phase into the gas phase. This process "builds up" its own slug of miscible material at the displacement front and therefore does not require the injection of LPG to obtain miscibil-ily. Each process has its own area of applicability. Generally, the high pressure gas process is applicable only with reservoir fluids which con-!ain a high concentration of inter- mediates. If the high pressure gas process is technically feasible at pressures less than 4,500 psi, it is probably more desirable economically than the slug process. The slug process has broad applicability in the shallower reservoirs and with reservoir fluids which contain a relatively low concentration of LPG and natural gasoline constituents. This paper deals with some new concepts of the high pressure gas injection process where it is proposed that flue gas can be substituted for hydrocarbon gas without sacrificing our goal of miscibility. MECHANISM Introduction Considerable effort has been devoted to study of the mechanics ot the high pressure gas injection proc-one generalization result-ing from some of these studies was that the composition of the injected gas is relatively unimportant in establishing the miscibility pressure* for a given reservoir fluid. This generalization is correct for the composition range of gases typically encountered in the field. Two such gases are a gasoline plant tail gas containing 85 per cent methane and 15 per cent ethane, and a field separator gas containing 70 per cent methane and 30 per cent heavier components. The most important factor which sets the miscibility pressure in the operation is the reservoir fluid composition, particularly the concentration of LPG-natural gasoline constituents. The injected gas is the agent by which the LPG-natural gasoline constituents are concentrated at the displacing front to create a miscible displacement. Based on these results, it appeared feasible that some inexpensive gas, such as flue gas, might be substituted for hydrocarbon gas for use in the high pressure gas process. A re-examination of the phase relations of the high pressure gas injection process should clarify the principle behind using flue gas (essentially nitrogen) as an injection gas. Three Component Diagram The phase relations of the high pressure gas injection process have been illustrated by the use of the three component diagrams.'," In Fig. 1 we have arbitrarily represented the multi-component reservoir system by three components; methane, ethane through hexane, and heptanes plus. The solid curve ABC is the phase boundary curve. It represents the locus of compositions which have fixed saturation pressure at a fixed temperature; the lower branch AB shows bubble point compositions, the upper branch BC, the dew point compositions. Point B is the coniposition of the critical mixture at this temperature and pressure. The dashed lines (tie lines) connect vapor and liquid compositions which are in equilibrium. Let us consider Reservoir Fluid D which we wish to displace in 21 miscible manner by gas injection. Let us further restrict the discussion to the case where miscibility between an injection gas and the reservoir fluid at the displacement front is developed by gas enrichment in the reservoir. For this case, any gas whose composition lies between Points C and E on the right side of the three component diagram can be used to give a miscible displacement of Reservoir Fluid D. This is true because the more mobile injected gas moves faster than the displaced oil and is in continuous contact with virgin oil at the displacement front. On the assumption that stress or strain relaxation occurs as the result of a thermally activated process, equations are derived relating to tensile experiments that give the strain as a function of the time under the condition of constant stress, and the stress as a function of the time for constant strain. It is demonstrated that if the strain-rate equation i = previously proPosed by Kuhlmann., is used as a starting point, then the relaxation of strain at constant stress may be expressed by the equation c = (-RT/(Y) 1tz tanh (t + is the strain capable of being relaxed at any given instant. Similarly, it is shown that the relaxation of stress at constant strain may be given by a = (-RT/B) In tanh (t + t0)/27, where a is the instantaneois value of the relaxable stress. The fact that these relationships reduce to well-known empirical equations at both large and small values of the stress Or strain is also shozcn. The present theory is shown to agree well with experimental data obtained from tensile elastic aftereffect experiments on a zirconium specimen prestrained at 77 k as to make it strongly anelastic. It is also demonstrated that elastic aftereffect data obtained using torsional specimens ?,Lay agree reasonably well with the equation derived for the case of tension. RELAXATION experiments are often employed as a means of studying metallic deformation mechanisms.' The simplest and most commonly employed techniques involve stress relaxation at constant strain and strain relaxation at constant stress. In general, however, investigations of this nature have been seriously handicapped in the past by a lack of suitable equations giving the time dependence of the relaxing variable over an interval that extends from small strains up into the region where internal-friction experiments become strain-amplitude dependent. This paper presents a derivation of such a set of equations for the case where the time-dependent part of the strain is anelastic or recoverable and the specimens are loaded in simple tension. The relaxation of strain under the condition of constant stress will be considered first. Let us assume that strain relaxation occurs as the result of a reversible thermally activated process that occurs at a number of relaxation centers lying in an elastic matrix. Then, following Kuhlmann,2 we may express the rate of strain relaxation as follows: where C is the strain rate, AFx the free energy of activation of the process controlling strain relaxation, a, the effective or average resolved stress at the relaxation centers, u an activation volume, R the universal gas constant, T the absolute temperature, > a factor with dimensions of a volume that accounts for the strain contribution of a successful operation of a unit process, N the number of relaxation centers per unit volume, and v the Debye frequency. The first term on the right of Eq. [I] represents a strain rate in the direction favored by the stress, while the second term represents the rate in the opposite direction. It is implied in Eq. [I.] that both F and v are symmetrical with respect to the two basic directions of operation of a relaxation process. Eq. It is also implied that v, 7, and N do not depend strongly on a, . In deriving a relationship for the strain as a function of the time from her equation, equivalent to Eq. [2], Kuhlmann2 chose to consider only the limiting cases where the time was either very small or very large. It will now be shown that it is possible to integrate Eq. [2] to obtain a single equation valid over a wide range of strains if the concept of relaxable strain is introduced. The use of this quantity, which is the difference between the instantaneous value of the strain and the value of the strain at complete relaxation, represents the primary point of departure of the present theory from that of earlier workers. THE introduction of a substitutional alloying element, X, appreciably complicates calculation of the thermodynamics of the formation of proeutectoid ferrite from austenite. As noted in the preceding paper,' the positional entropy of the interstitial species is the principal component of the free energy of an interstitial solid solution with which theory has so far been able to deal. One would expect, however, that other components of the free energy of this type of solid solution may be significantly altered by the addition of a substitutional alloying element. Even if the assumptions are made, by analogy to the case of Fe-C alloys,' that changes in the positional entropy of carbon represent a significant part of the thermodynamic effects of an alloying element, and that the remaining effects can be taken into account by fitting the equations developed on this basis to experimental data on Fe-C-X phase diagrams or on the activities of carbon in alloyed austenite and ferrite, the experimental information available on either of these quantities is not yet sufficiently accurate or extensive, respectively, to make such an approach useful. An attempt made by Zener on the former basis to explain the effects of alloying elements on the thermodynamics of Fe-C alloys in terms of a temperature-independent "free-energy change" (actually enthalpy hane') required to transfer 1 mole of an alloying element from austenite to ferrite, in which the "free-energy change" was determined by fitting the theoretical relationships developed to Fe-C-X phase diagrams, thus proved inadequate in part because of deficiencies in the available ternary-phase-diagram data.= Other difficulties of a more fundamental nature, however, also indicated the desirability of a different approach to the problem.3y4y6 zener6 subsequently proposed that the free-energy change associated with y — a transformation in pure iron can be decomposed into magnetic and nonmagnetic components. Alloying elements were assumed to affect those components separately. One parameter was used to describe the quantitative effect exerted on each component. These parameters were evaluated from Ms (martensite-start) temperature data and from other experimental information usually either readily available or measurable with acceptable accuracy. Zener applied this treatment only to the calculation of Fe-X phase diagrams in which X is a ferrite-stabilizing element. In the present study, this treatment is extended to include austenite-stabilizing elements, and then combined with treatments previously considered for Fe-C alloys1 to permit calculation of the thermodynamic quantities of interest in the austenite - proeutectoid ferrite transformation in Fe-C-X alloys, where a number of representative, and commonly used alloying elements are chosen for X, including Si, Mn, Co, Mo, Al, Cr, and Cu. The results are used to explain important features of the partition of alloying elements between austenite and proeutectoid ferrite, as reported in a companion paper7 on the basis of electron-probe analysis, and to provide some additional understanding of the influence of alloying elements upon the kinetics of nucleation and growth of proeutectoid ferrite. Portions of this treatment6 have been clarified in the course of a review by Kaufman and Cohen.3 The consolidated summary of these developments with which this section is begun provides a basis for further clarification of the treatment, from which extension to include austenite- as well as ferrite-stabilizing elements is a natural consequence. However, I thought it might be interesting for me to relate some of the experiences we had with equipment similar to the vibrating filter as described by the' authors. At the Tamaqua flotation plant of the Lebigh Navigation Coal Co. approximately 40 tons per hour of froth concentrate carrying 60 pct by weight moisture are produced. The major problem encountered at this plant is the dewatering of this coal froth so that a satisfactory product can be sent to market. In the original design of the plant a centrifuge of solid bowl type was included for de-watering this material. The centrifuge did not work out as well as we had hoped. High maintenance costs and moisture content in the cake were obtained. A Robbins dewatering screen was installed at a later date with the idea of using it in conjunction with the centrifuge. The froth concentrate from the flotation cells was fed directly to the Robbins dewatering screen. The cake from the screen carried approximately 55 pct of the feed solids. Moisture in the cake was approximately 24 pct by weight. The underflow from the screen carried 45 pct of the feed tonnage at about 80 pct moisture by weight. The underflow product was then pumped into the centrifuge with the idea of using the cen-trifuge for recovering the tonnage lost through the screen. This circuit did not operate as satisfactorily as we expected. The only benefit derived was in the reduction in the power consumed by the centrifuge. The maintenance on the centrifuge was approximately the same as previously. The next step in our experiments was to pump the underflow from the screen into a cyclone thickener which was mounted directly over the vibrating screen. This thickener increased the concentration of the solids to approximately 60 pct by weight and dropped the mate- rial back 011 the filter cake which had formed toward the discharge end of the screen. Unfortunately, the screen was not capable of handling this additional tonnage, and our experiments stopped at that point. We have been considering installing a second screen to make possible the complete mechanical dewatering of this product by the use of the dewatering screen and the cyclone thickener. Another possibility under study is to pump the underflow from this screen to a thickener which is available in the flotation plant, and to combine this thickeued underflow with the original feed going to the screen. Again, however, a second dewatering screen will be required to handle the total tonnage. 0. R. LYONS*—I had an opportunity to read this paper ahead of the meeting, and I did a little pencil engineering on it. As Mr. Bertholf said, it is very difficult to make a comparison and to carry the results of work at one plant over to what might be expected at another. What I did was to find information on filtering operations more or less comparable to the type of operation that Mr. Bertholf has with his vibrating filter. The only information that I was able to find was for drum type filters, and I found the operating characteristics of the vibrating filter and the drum type filters were very similar. The moisture contents of the cakes were almost identical. The output per square foot was about the only way that I could compare their capacities— using square foot of screen area against square foot of filter area—and I found the capacity of the vibrating filter to be slightly greater per unit area than the capacity of the drum-type filters. W. H. NEWTON†—Do I understand that the only escape for the solids is by overflowing the thickener? That is, does the filter have a chance to recover all the solids except that lost in the thickener overflow ? W. M. BERTHOLF (authors' reply)— Actually, the only escapc from that part of the circuit is over the top of the thickener. There are other places the fines could be lost in the washery. but once they get into that part of the circuit, they must go over the top to escape. W. H. NEWTON—I would like to ask Mr. Lyons if, in the study of rotary filters, he has any basis for comparison of operating costs? 0. R. LYONS—No, I had no information on costs. The only information I was able to find was on screen size, moisture content, and tonnage output per unit area. W. L. McMORRIS*—Are you wasting that overflow water or re-using it? W. M. BERTHOLF—Right now, we are not re-using it. D. R. MITCHELL† —What is the approximate per capita cost of one of these units? W. M. BERTHOLF—It appears to be somewhere in the neighborhood of $200, for the screen. W. H. NEWTON—The cost would be about $2500 for the complete unit including the vibrating power unit. G. A. VISSAC‡—I do not like to come on the floor after I have been talking so long, but I thought you might be interested in our experience in dewatering, as well as drying our very fine coals. We have used both centrifuge and vibrating screens. The type of vibrating screens we have used in Canada are called the Zimmer. That is a screen of German construction, and I guess it is along the same lines as the dewatering screens you are using now. We use wedge wires, and the minimum size opening is a quarter of a millimeter. In our experience, the cheapest way is still a dewatering bin. A dewatering bin takes 48 hr to do work that takes 20 min in a dewatering screen. We use old wedge wire from our driers which we cover with brattice cloth, and

The collecting properties of the fatty acid type collectors for barite were studied using zeta potential measurements, infrared spectroscopy, and Hallimond tube flotation tests.
