In the Texas Panhandle 277 oil wells and 60 gas wells were completed during 1942, as compared with 647 oil and 52 gas wells completed in 1941. Fourteen dry holes were drilled in the Texas Panhandle in 1942, of which five were wildcats, resulting in four failures and one gas-field discovery in Sherman County; the latter being Hazy-Herrington-Marsh No. I Bivins completed for 5,600,000 cu. it. ol gas from 2989 to 3226 feet. During the year 1942 the Texas Panhandle produced, by counties, the following quantities of oil:

In the spring of 1935 the authors undertook to compare the geomagnetic and direct-current carth-resistivity methods of tracing a concealed dike along its strike. An area near Chapel Hill, North Carolina, was selected, where a diabase dike was known. For rapid reconnaissance the magnetic method offers several advantages ovcr the electrical. The resistivity method is useful in determining the position of underground water, a factor of consideration in regions where mining is contemplated. All factors considered, the coincidence between the positions of the dike as determined by the two methods is striking.

SEVERAL years ago the frequent breaking of wheels on the 66-cu. ft. cars used with the underground electric haulage suggested that the numerous frogs in the track might be a contributing cause toward this breakage. As a remedy a spring frog was thought of, but the 30-lb. rails used were too small for such a de-vice to be made, that would stand the work. In a book on mine tracks a sketch of a pivoted central switch point suggested a pivoted rail to replace the frog,

They came from Paris, Washington and Rabat; two directors, two chief geologists and the president of our own local subsidiary company. Such a meeting was not unprecedented, but it seeemed to us that our president was overzealous in arranging for inspections of each exploration site. One was a problem. Jacques, our president, had concocted the idea that we should lead this learned, mature (not exactly aged) group into the desert to see newly found anomaly. It was in virgin country and had been marked by dropping a flour sack on it from the air.
