THE first session was held in the small hall of the Academy of Music, on Tuesday evening, February 18th, 1879. The proceedings were opened by the reading, by President Eckley B. Coxe, of the following Address : SECONDARY TECHNICAL EDUCATION. Technical education is a subject to which both the American Institute of Mining Engineers and the American Society of Civil Engineers have of late years given much attention, and deservedly so. We all remember the admirable address of our former President, Mr. Holley, at the Washington meeting, upon this subject, and the very interesting reunion of the two societies in Philadelphia for its discussion. The problem to the solution of which the meeting devoted its attention was, "Shall the practical education of the engineer in the mine, in the rolling-mill, in the workshop, or in the field, precede, be contemporaneous with, or follow his theoretical studies in the technical school ?" I do not propose to add anything to what was so admirably said by so many of our leading engineers on that occasion ; but I shall ask your attention to another question in technical education, which seems to me equally worthy of our consideration, and which, I am sorry to say, has as yet attracted but little attention in this country. It is, "Shall the apprentices (I call them so for the want of a better general name), who are growing up and learning their trades in and around our mines and works, and from whose ranks the master mechanics and foremen of the future must be taken-shall they be provided with some means of obtaining as much theoretical training as may be necessary to enable them properly to understand the various processes and operations that they may be called upon to superintend, and not be obliged to pick up, as best they may, here a little and there a little truth mingled with much error?" In the former case, those who have the ability and industry to avail themselves of the advantages that should be offered to them would fit themselves to become real foremen, men who would understand and appreciate the true engineer and his methods. Of late years the young men of this country who have wished to enter our profession have had great facilities offered to them for so doing ; there have been undoubtedly great improvements in the methods of instruction; and although I am very far from imagining that no further progress can be made, or is demanded, yet I feel sure that

FOR the first ten months of 1942, on which data are available at the time this is written, the coal-mining industry achieved a most creditable safety record, and ha1 figures for the year may show a record surpassing that of 1941 in which the industry reached the best accident rate in its history. The ten- month accident rate for both bituminous and anthracite mining in 1942 was 2.197 fatalities per million tons of coal mined, compared with a revised rate of 2.271 for the same months of 1941. The bituminous rate decreased from 2.139 in 1941 to 2.039 for ten months of this year, and the anthracite rate shows a reduction from 3.707 to 3.699 for the same period.

BEFORE the war we often heard the term "Big Business." And there were complaints of the ills and abuses attributed to bigness in business. Although there were examples where the small businessmen spoke for their rights and sought protection from the bigger ones, it has only been in recent war years that a tendency has developed definitely to divide the business of our nation into the big and the small. In some cases, those with an eye to the political value of the vastly greater number of small businessmen of the country have fomented this division by hurrying to the protection of these more numerous voters, and intentionally or not have emphasized in their writings and verbal attacks any and all differences of these interests that could either be found or fabricated to, suit the occasion. It has become another example of breaking the people into classes and thus setting up the basis for the claims of one class against another, and the subsequent demand for legislation and Governmental aid. The terms "big" and "small" are purely relative. One businessman, employing a hundred men, told me recently he did not know which adjective would be more appropriately applied to his operation. He did not know whether he should join the small operators' group that had been organized, or should consider himself big. He said that his present plant seemed big to him when he looked back to its humble beginning many years ago with a couple of men in two rooms. Yet, when compared with many of his competitors who employ thousands, his was small. He did add, however, that he probably became big one day a few years ago when the union moved in and organized his employees.

The study of the energy used in crushing operations has advanced from a period of perplexing confusion to one of greater clarity. Only within the last few years has any true conception of the work in crushing been possible, owing to the chaotic state of theoretical knowledge. For some 20 years a controversy existed between those advocating the Rittinger law and those advocating the Kick law. The Kick law now appears to be definitely out of the picture, and crushing efficiency may be based confidently on the Rittinger theory. There also seems to be a generally crystallized conception as to the meaning and nature of sub-sieve material. There is needed a simple, direct method for determining surface on a crushed ore product, and also a simple and accepted method for size determination on minus 400-mesh material. The Crushing Law The Rittinger(l)‡ theory of crushing was advanced in 1867 and the Kick(3) theory in 1885. While the Rittinger theory might have been accepted without much question and actually had been accepted by many investigators, a serious doubt as to its validity was raised by Stadler(10) who upon purely theoretical grounds proclaimed the Kick "law" as the true law of crushing. According to Rittinger the energy required in successive steps in reduction increases geometrically, while according to Kick the energy increases arithmetically. These "laws" therefore are at variance, and the establishment of the true law was recognized as of first importance. Many simple experiments have been made to demonstrate the application of the Rittinger theory to crushing, and it would seem that its simplicity should favor its acceptance. Experimental evidence, however, was not convincing, as no reliable data could be obtained on the finer material from a crushing or grinding operation. Gates,(13) Bell,(19)

A study co.mbining stress-strain .measurements in conjunction with transmission electron microscoPy has been made with near equiatomic Fe-Cr alloys which were aged for various times at 500°C. Associated with this aging is a marked increase in deformation twinning. The outstanding feature of these twins is that they generate stress fields sufficiently great so as to give rise to spontaneous dislocation loop nucleation nearly normal to the propagating twin. This observation is in agreement with the theoretically predicted elongation of the stress field of a dislocation Perpendicular to its direction of motion as it moves near the speed of sound. Dislocation loop nucleation is more difficult in the longer aged alloys so that this energy absorption mechanism is not effective in hindering twin propagation. Since crack nucleation can readily occur near the tip of a twin, the aged alloys become extremely brittle when deformed in tension. Iron-chromium alloys in the vicinity of the equiatomic compositions become severely embrittled when aged at about 500°C. Fisher et 01.' have shown that this embrittlement is related to the decomposition of the original random Fe-Cr solid solution into a chromium-rich and an iron-rich phase. In addition, Mar-cinkowski et a1.' have shown that twinning becomes an increasingly more important mode of deformation as the aging time is increased. These results have been recently corroborated by the transmission electron microscopy study of Mima and amauchi . The Fe-Cr alloy thus seems ideal for verifying the predictions made in Parts I4 and 115 of this investigation where the behavior of large static or blocked twins and those of large dynamic or propagating twins, respectively, were investigated numerically. It was thus decided to measure the stress-strain curves generated by embrittled alloys that were aged for various times and to examine sections by transmission electron microscopy. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Electrolytic iron and electrolytic chromium were vacuum-melted and poured into ingot form. The composition of the resulting alloy was found to contain 46.0 wt pct Cr (47.8 at. pct), the remainder being iron. The resulting ingot was swaged above 850°C into 0.250-and 0.400-in.-diam rounds. Compression samples of 0.250 in. diam and 0.400 in. long were cut from the smaller-diameter rounds. These samples were then sealed in evacuated quartz tubes and annealed for 30 min at 1150°C to produce a uniform and equiaxed grain size of mean diameter equal to 1.73 mm. They in turn were rapidly quenched from 850°C so as to preserve the condition of random solid-solution characteristic of the elevated temperature. The samples were then aged for various times up to 300 hr at 500°C in a massive Pb-Bi alloy bath. The samples were next polished and tested in compression at room temperature as described in Ref. 6 using an Instron tensile testing machine. The strain rate used was 0.05 in. per in. per min. The remaining larger round was converted into compression specimens of 0.325 in. diam and 0.500 in. long. This larger diameter enabled wafers of sufficient size to be prepared for examination by trans-mission electron microscopy techniques after subjecting them to a suitable strain. Foil preparation is described in some detail in Ref. 6. All foils were examined in a type HU-11A Hitachi electron microscope operating at 100 kv. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Fig. 1 shows the effect of aging at 500°C on the room-temperature stress-strain curves of the FeCr alloys. For greater clarity the origin of each curve has been displaced upward. The same origin has been used for both the 0 and the 0.1 curves. It is apparent that with increased aging times a sharp drop in load is observed at the yield stress which becomes more pronounced as aging proceeds. A loud sonic burst accompanies this drop and subsequent metallographic examination shows the sample to contain numerous twins. For intermediate aging times, a number of smaller twin bursts follow the initial large one. The total plastic strain associated with the twinning mode of deformation can be obtained by adding up the contributions AE~ from all i twin bursts, i.e., £,¦££,-, in the manner illustrated schematically in Fig. 2. The contraction of the specimen, as measured from the strip chart of the Instron, after suitably correcting for the elasticity of the machine, was converted into true strain using the assumption that there was no volume change and that the sample remained cylindrical. IN the decreasing order of the tonnages involved, the uses of phosphates can be grouped conveniently into three general classes, namely, fertilizer; chemicals for military, industrial, and technical purposes; and mineral feed for livestock. The quantity of phosphate used as fertilizer, principally in the form of superphosphate, has always exceeded by far that used for all other purposes, though in recent years a marked increase has occurred in its consumption for the other two general classes of uses. Prior to the present century large quantities of superphosphate, as well as a considerable portion of the production of phosphorus chemicals, score made from bone materials which were plentiful and cheap in some areas and which could be more easily processed than phosphate rock for the manufacture of chemicals. Today, however phosphate rock has almost completely displaced bone as a raw material for the manufacture of chemically processed phosphates in nearly all countries of the world.

ZAY JEFFRIES, who has been awarded the Douglas medal, established in 1922 by a group of the friends of the late James Douglas for distin-guished achievement in non-ferrous metallurgy, is one of the most notable graduates of the South Dakota School of Mines where he took his B. S. degree in 1910. The following year he was manager of the Ideal Mining Co., at Custer, and in 1911 he became instructor in metallurgy at the Case School of Applied Science, Cleve-land, where he remained until 1917, and in 1918 he took his D. Sc. degree at Harvard. During all this period he was engaged in experi-mental and consulting work for the Electric Railway Improvement Co., t h e Cleveland Steel Tool Co., the W. S. Tyler Co., the Lincoln Electric Co., the Aluminum Castings Co., and the Cleveland wire di-vision of the General Elec-tric Co. He is now en-gaged in general consulting work, especially for the Aluminum Co. of America, the General Electric Co., and the National Tube Co. He has contributed to the Transactions papers on the determination of grain size in metals (with A. H. Kline and E. B. CRUDE oil production in the United States during 1938 reached approximately 1,214,355,000 barrels, an average of 3,327,000 barrels per day, or 5 per cent below the 1937 record output of 1,279,160,000 barrels. The decreased production did not prevent the stocks of all products from increasing to a total of 575,954,000 barrels by Sept. 30, an increase of 10,957,000 above the total on Jan. 1, or an average daily storage increase in all products of 40,135 barrels. The increase in total stocks was made entirely in the refined products, stocks of crude oil during the first nine months of 1938 having actually declined 7,155,000 barrels to 299,671,000 barrels, or an average daily decline of 26,209 barrels. The minerals barite (BaSO4-barium sulfate) and witherite (BaCO3-barium carbonate) are the chief commercial sources of the element barium and its compounds whose many uses are nearly hidden among the technical complexities of modern industrial processes and products. Barite, the major ore mineral, is extremely vital to the petroleum industry which in 1980 consumed at least 90% of the world's production of 8.8 million tons as a major ingredient of the heavy fluid, called mud, that is circulated in rotary drilling of oil and gas wells. The remaining 10% of the barite production was consumed chiefly in the manufacture of barium chemicals and glass and as a pigment, filler, and extender. Barite occurs throughout much of the world and is available from three major geologic types of deposits-vein and cavity filling, residual, and bedded-in sufficient quantity at competitive prices to meet current demands. The world's demand for barite is expected to increase, and geologic circumstances are favorable for the discovery of new deposits of commercial value. Witherite is much less common and abundant than barite, although it is more desirable in many ways as a raw material for the production of barium chemicals. The United States has not produced witherite since about 1950; England is currently the chief producer of witherite. End Uses Most of the world's barite production since 1926 has been used as a weighting agent for the muds circulated in rotary drilling of oil and gas wells. The muds fundamentally are mixtures of water, clay, and barite in different proportions that vary according to local reservoir conditions. Muds with a specific gravity as great as 2.5 are used. The mud is pumped down the hollow drill stem, passes through the bit at the bottom of the hole, and rises to the surface in the space between the drill stem and the wall of the hole. In the course of this circulation the drill bit is cooled, cuttings are removed, the drill stem is lubricated, the walls of the hole are sealed, and the hydrostatic head of the column of weighted fluid helps to confine high oil and gas pressures. The latter feature aids in prevention of gushers, thus reducing both environmental pollution and waste of oil and gas resources as well as conserving the natural reservoir pressure for greater production and rate of recovery of the products contained in the rocks. Barite is particularly well suited for drilling mud because it is clean, easy to handle, soft (nonabrasive), heavy, virtually inert chemically, and relatively inexpensive compared to many other available heavy materials. Barite is used in the manufacture of glass in continuous tanks. The addition of barite homogenizes the melt and gives greater brilliance and clarity to the finished glass. Ground barite, both unbleached and bleached by sulfuric acid, is a common industrial filler, extender, and weighting agent. The rubber industry is a major consumer of barite as a filler. Barite also is added to bristolboard, heavy printing paper, playing cards, rope finishes, brake linings, clutch facings, plastics, and linoleum, to name but a few uses. Bleached barite has long been an extender in white lead paint because of its weight. The low index of refraction of barite, however, makes its ability to cover marks poorer than some other substances, but its low capacity for absorption of oil is a good feature. Off-color or unbleached barite can be used as a filler in colored paints. In the construction industry, some lump barite is used in concrete aggregate to weigh down pipelines buried in marshy areas and to shield nuclear reactors. Because barite absorbs gamma radiation well, its use reduces the amount of expensive lead shielding otherwise

Conclusions reached in a paper by weertmanl are amplified in a mathematical and graphical way. It is shown that in a stressed crystal a straight dis-location may be in a position of unstable equilibrium with respect to helix development, and how a small perturbation may start the dislocation off on its helical path. Helix development occurs by diffision; bulk diffusion is necessary for development from a screw, but core diffision is sufficient for development from an edge dislocation. For a mixed dislocation helix development can take place by core diffusion if the helix also climbs; a diffusion reversal takes place when the slope of the helix equals the slope of the Burgers vector. The work done on a crystal by the external forces is graphically shown to be consistent with the direction of motion of the dislocation in helix development. Finally a detailed mechanism for tangle formation from helices is presented. In the course of helix development a glide situation may be reached where a segment of each helix loop lies in a slip plane in which it can expand by glide. Thus is it visualized how a helix can deteriorate into a tangle. A paper by weertmanl proposes dislocation-tangle formation by a helical dislocation mechanism. The present paper amplifies Weertman's arguments in a mathematical and graphical way and presents some further ramifications of the proposed model. The importance of dislocation tangles is discussed in Weertman's paper and the references cited therein. The mechanism of their formation is not yet understood. Weertman proposes that in cold-worked crystals conditions exist suitable for the conversion of straight dislocations into helices and subsequently into tangles. Helix formation occurs by a diffusion process and Weertman proposes that at low temperatures only core diffusion is important. The present paper necessarily repeats some of Weertman's work. Since the mathematical development and notation used are slightly different from his, this was thought necessary for clarity. GEOMETRY OF THE HELIX weertman2 has shown that the equilibrium form of any dislocation line is a helix if it is assumed that the energy per unit length (line tension) of the dis- location is constant. For the special case that no external forces act on the dislocation, the helix reduces to a straight line. We shall assume in this paper that the dislocation has a helical form even when it is not in equilibrium. The parametric equation of a helix is, see Fig. l: where a is the radius of the cylinder tangent to the helix, and 270 the pitch of the helix. The pitch is related to v, the number of turns per unit length (along the axis) by the relation: When a = 0 Eq. [I] gives a straight line in the z direction. The growth of a straight dislocation into a helix is now described mathematically by letting a vary from zero to its final value. North Louisiana (including all townships north of the Louisiana base line) had a year of normal development in 1940, marked by the discovery of two shallow oil fields producing from the Wilcox formation in La Salle Parish and a large increase in drilling in the old Caddo shallow field. This renewal of shallow drilling activity led to a somewhat unexpected increase in the number of wells drilled, although the total footage and average depth continued to decline, as in several preceding years. Well completions and depth statistics for 1940, with previous years for coinparison, are as follows: Wildcat producers in 1940 include the discovery oil wells in the Olla and Nebo fields; also three gas wells in the vicinity oi the Olla field and a shallow gas well, which opened a new field or extension in the Greenwood area of Caddo Parish. This table illustrates the lack of important deep discoveries since 1937, in which year the Rodessa, Lisbon and Cotton Valley fields were being actively developed. Operators have been forced to return to the old type of shallow drilling, which necessarily means smaller producing wells. Oil production in 1940 was 24,381,760 bbl., a decrease of 867,880 bbl. from 1939, or 3.44 per cent. The newly discovered fields of La Salle Parish produced over a million barrels, and other increases worthy of note were at Cotton Valley, Caddo, Sligo and Sugar Creek. The greatest decrease was again at Rodessa, although this remains the principal producing field. Geological Names Revised Deep drilling during 1940 did not provide a great deal of new geological information. However, by agreement of a majority of the members of the Shreveport Geolog- ical Society, the names of some of the Lower Cretaceous formations have been revised in the interest of greater clarity and in order to make the descriptions agree better with the facts discovered in recent years. The geological section is discussed in detail and reasons for changes in nomenclature are stated in a recent publication by Ralph W. Imlay. PRIOR work on the Zr-Cu phase diagram by Alli-bone and Sykes,' Pogodin, Shumova, and KUGU cheva,' and Raub and EngeL3 as confined largely to copper-rich alloys. The investigations of Raub and Engel were the most recent and seemingly the most complete of these. Alloys from 0 to 68.3 pct Zr were studied principally by thermal analysis and microscopic examination. These authors reported an inter metallic compound ZrCu, (1116°C melting point) and two eutectics, one at 86.3 pct Cu (977°C mp) and the other at 49 pct Cu (877°C mp). The solubility of zirconium in copper was reported to be less than 0.1 pct at 940°C. The zirconium melting stock consisted of Westing-house "Grade 3" iodide crystal bar (nominally 99.8 pct pure). It was treated by sand blasting and pickling (HF-HNO, solution) to remove the surface film of corrosion product, resulting from grade designation tests. The crystal bar was cold rolled to strip, lightly pickled again, and cut into pieces approximately 1/32 in. thick and 1/4 in. square. These were cleaned in acetone, dried, and stored for charging. The high-purity copper (spectrographic grade) was supplied by the American Smelting and Refining Co. with a nominal purity of 99.99 pct. These copper rods were rolled to strip, cut into squares the same size as the zirconium platelets, cleaned in acetone, dried, and stored. Equipment and Procedures The equipment used for melting and annealing the zirconium binary alloys and for the determination of solidus curves has been described in connection with previous work on the Ti-Si system' and in recent papers in this series describing the studies on eight binary zirconium systems.5-' Techniques employed for preparing and processing the alloys were also similar to those used in the above references. Ingots of 20 g were melted under a protective atmosphere of helium on water-cooled copper blocks in a nonconsumable electrode (tungsten) arc furnace. The ingots were homogenized and cold-worked prior to isothermal annealing to aid in the attainment of equilibrium. The specimens were heat-treated in Vycor bulbs sealed in vacuo or under argon, depending on the temperature of the anneal. Quenching was accomplished by breaking the Vycor bulbs under cold water. Temperature control was within ±3OC of reported temperatures. Thermal analysis was primarily relied on to determine eutectic levels, peritectic levels, and compound melting points. The induction furnace incipient melting technique was also used but did not provide the accuracy obtained by thermal analysis in this system, which involves much lower solidus temperatures than the other zirconium systems. A special technique for the determination of characteristic temperatures was employed in the case of several intermediate phases and their eutectics which displayed very small differences in melting temperatures. Specimens were sealed in Vycor bulbs and annealed at a series of very accurately controlled temperatures. Metallographic examination was then employed to reveal incipient melting. Furnaces and techniques in general were described previously.' The echant used was 20 pct HF plus 20 pct HNO3 in glycerine unless otherwise stated. Results and Discussion The chemical analyses of the majority of alloys prepared for the determination of phase relationships in this system are given in Table I and a brief summary of the equilibrium anneals employed is given in Table 11. In a preliminary program, alloys containing 1, 4, and 7 pct Cu were annealed for three different times at each of the temperatures 700°, 800°, and 900°C. No change in the relative amounts of phases present was detected after 350, 150, and 75 hr at the above temperatures, respectively. The times listed in Table II were accordingly chosen as a result of these preliminary tests. Zirconium-rich alloys containing from 0.1 to 10 pct CU were reduced by cold pressing from 58 to 8 pct, depending upon thk alloy content, homogenized for 7 hr at 900°C, and then reduced 80 to 13 pct by cold rolling, again depending upon copper content. Other alloys were studied in the cast, or cast and annealed conditions. The contracted scope of investigation for this system included the range 0 to 50 atomic pct Cu. This approximate region is shown in Fig. 1. Due to evidence of phase relationships departing considerably from those proposed by Raub and Engel" in the 50 to 100 atomic pct range, the investigation was extended to cover this composition area rather thoroughly also. Fig. 2 is a drawing of the entire diagram. The labeling of some phase fields was omitted in Fig. 2 for the sake of clarity. An expanded view of the zirconium-rich region, with the experimental points necessary for its construction, is given in Fig. 3. The generally accepted value of Vogel and Tonn8 or the allotropic transformation a + 862' ±5OC, was employed in the construction of these diagrams. A careful study revealed that the "Grade 3" crystal bar used in this investigation actually transforms over the approximate range 850" to 870°C, due to impurities. It must be expected that this two-phase field in unalloyed zirconium will cause some departures from binary ideality in the very dilute alloys. Zirconium-rich Alloys: The a + ß transformation temperature is decreased from 862" to about 822°C by increasing amounts of copper. Thus, a eutectoid reaction, fi ß a+ Zr,Cu, occurs at a composition of about 1.6 pct Cu. The eutectoid level was determined to lie between the alloy series annealed at 815" and 830°C. A process has been developed to refine high-grade commercial aluminum to 99.99 pct purity. This enzploys precipitating titanium, vanadium, and zirconiu~ as borides. The upgraded liquid is partially crystallized under conditions that prevent massive freezing. The resulting crystals are compacted and washed free of adhernig impure liquid aluminum by melting the top crystals while draining off the liquid. Finally, the bottorn portion of the crystal bed is melted and removed as the pure product. Leakage from the crystallizat~on vessel is prevented by a layer of alumina granules that are not wetted by the aluminum. ALUMINUM of 99.99 pct purity is desired in a variety of applications. These include electrolytic capacitors, catalyst carriers, decorative trim for automobiles, aluminum powder, and high-strength alloys. This market was for many years filled by refining commercial-purity aluminum in a three-liquid-layer electrolytic cell of the type originally proposed by Hoopes. To meet the expanding need for lower-cost high-purity aluminum, a refining process based on chemical precipitation and fractional crystallization was developed. The availability of this super-purity metal was announced in November 1961, and three patents1-3 relating to the process were issued in 1965. An alternate process, comprising continuous fractional crystallization of a portion of a liquid-aluminum feed stream under conditions of strong agitation at the surface of the growing crystals, was published by Dewey4 in 1965. Earlier proposals by Larsen 5 and by Regner6 also emphasized the advantage of rapid agitation of the melt in the region of the crystallization zone. johnson 7 more recently proposed extracting purified aluminum from an alloy by mixing crystals of pure aluminum into the molten alloy, allowing them to grow, and removing the pure aluminum as by casting. Aamot's 8 recent patent describes a freeze refining process that involves controlled partial freezing against cooled moving retort walls. The Alcoa process to produce high-purity aluminum is schematically described in Fig. 1. Relatively pure aluminum is treated with boron in a furnace (a) to precipitate high melting point impurities, the supernatant liquid is transferred to a crystallization vessel (b), the liquid is partially crystallized with mechanized "tamping" (c), the remaining impure liquid is tapped out and the crystal bed partially and directionally re-melted to wash the underlying crystals (d), and the balance of the crystals is melted and withdrawn as high-purity aluminum (e). PRINCIPLES OF FRACTIONAL CRYSTALLIZATION Commonly encountered impurity elements form two types of systems with aluminum. Titanium, vanadium, and some other transition elements in periodic groups IV, V, and VI are the high melting point impurities. Initial solidification of aluminum containing small percentages of these elements will produce solid markedly enriched in them at temperatures slightly above the freezing point of high-purity aluminum. Most other elements, such as silicon and iron, produce eutectic type reactions with aluminum. In this case the first solid formed on initial solidification at temperatures slightly below the freezing point for high-purity aluminum is markedly depleted while the remaining liquid is enriched in these elements. The equilibrium change in composition during solidification of aluminum contaminated with silicon, iron, or titanium is illustrated in Fig. 2. Two metallurgical tools have acquired wide use within the past several years as a means of studying the transformation characteristics of steel. One is a technique used first by Bain and Davenport for determining the transformation characteristics of a steel at constant temperature; the second is the end-quench hardenability test. Constant-temperature transformation curves like those of Bain and Davenport have done much to rationalize the metal¬lography of steel; however, in commercial practices, constant-temperature transformation is seldom encountered, therefore only rarely can such curves be directly applied. The real reason for the determination of such curves lies, in the fact that they provide a way of thinking about transformation that is both convenient and productive. The end-quench hardenability test is a more practical means of studying transformation, for, by correlating positions on the hardenability bar with shapes of different masses, an almost direct application of the results can be made. Unfortunately, the end-quench test, though practical, can do very little toward improving the metallurgists' way of thinking about transformation. These two metallurgical tools, dealing with precisely the same phenomenon, should be very closely associated in metallurgists' minds. Actually, they are frequently pushed into separate mental corners and considered as being more or less distinct and unrelated. The reason for this is that no strong connecting link between them has been developed. An attempt is sometimes made to relate these two tools by projecting the critical cooling rate on the isothermal transformation plot as illustrated in Fig. I. The critical cooling rate is considered as a constant rate-though in practical applications, cooling rates are never constant-and this constant cooling rate is given uniform significance from the Ae temperature down to the temperature of initial transformation. A little thought indicates the errors of such a procedure. Certainly the time interval spent just below point A of Fig. I cannot be as effective in promoting nucleation as is the time interval spent just above point B. Yet the procedure represented in Fig. I considers all the time spent between temperatures A and B to be just as effective in promoting nucleation as though all the time were spent at temperature B. Furthermore, change the shape of the isothermal curve between points B and C in any way desired, and the required critical cooling rate is not changed one iota. This cannot possibly be true. Such a way of thinking about critical cooling rates not only is incapable of giving any results that are quantitatively satisfactory but is likely to give very misleading qualitative results.

The electrical resistance of a series of V-H alloys (0 to 3.5 at. pct H) has been measured over the temperature range G° to 360°. Interstitial impurities made contributions to the residual resistivity, but not the ideal resistivity. The contribution of hydrogen in solid solution is expressed by Ap = 1.12 microhm-cm per at. pct H; but the contribution of precipitated hydride was negligible. A portion of the so1vu.s for the V-H phase diagram is presented. The solubility limit is given by In N (at. pct H) = (5.828 i 0.009) - (2933 i 44)/RT. Comparison of critical temperatures joy hydride precipitation and published critical temperatures for hydrogen embrittlement suggests the two are related. ThiS study was initiated as part of an investigation of the mechanism by which small concentrations of hydrogen embrittle the hydride-forming metals at low temperatures. It has already been shown that, in the case of hcp zirconium, a reduction in ductility accompanies the strengthening resulting from precipitation of a finely dispersed hydride phase.''' Our attempts to detect a similar precipitation of a second phase at low temperatures in V-H alloys by transmission electron microscopy have been thwarted because we have been unable to prepare thin foils that are representative of the bulk material with respect to hydrogen concentrati~n.~'~ The present investigation establishes the solvus of the V-H system at subambient temperatures. Subsequently, we hope to be able to determine whether the embrittlement temperature is related to the critical temperature for precipitation of the hydride in a given V-H alloy. veleckis5 has proposed a partial phase diagram for the V-H system based on extrapolations of the pressure-composition relations he measured at higher temperatures. Kofstad and wallace' conducted a similar study of single-phase alloys but did not attempt to establish the phase diagram. Zanowick and wallace' and ~aeland' have studied a portion of the phase diagram by X-ray diffraction, but they investigated no alloys in the hydrogen concentration range 0 to 3 at. pct, the range of interest to us. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The vanadium was obtained from the Bureau of Mines, Boulder City, Nev., in the form of electrolytic crystals. The analyses supplied with them listed 230 ppm by weight metallic impurities, 20 ppm C, 100 ppm N, and 290 ppm 0. The crystals were electron-beam-melted into an ingot that was rolled to 0.64 mm. Strips, 60 mm long and 4.2 mm wide, were cut from the sheet, and both rolled surfaces were ground on wet 600-grit Sic paper to produce specimens 0.4 mm thick. They were wrapped in molybdenum foil, vacuum-encapsulated in quartz, and annealed 4 hr at 1273°K. The specimens were annealed in a dynamic vacuum of 2X lo-' Torr for 30 min at 1073°K for dehydrogenation, and charged with the desired quantity of hydrogen by allowing reaction with hydrogen gas at 1073°K for 2 hr and cooling at 100°K per hr. Purified hydrogen was obtained by thermal decomposition of UH3. Sixteen specimens were studied: two contained no hydrogen and the others had hydrogen concentrations between 0.5 and 3.5 at. pct (hydrogen analyses were done by vacuum extraction at 1073°K). Electrical resistances were measured by the four-terminal-resistor method on an apparatus similar to the one described by Horak.~ The specimen holder was designed so that both current and potential leads made spring-loaded mechanical contact with the specimen. The potential leads were 30 mm apart, and the current leads were 55 mm apart. The current was 0.10000 amp. We used the following baths for the indicated temperature ranges: liquid nitrogen, 77°K; Freon 12, 120" to 230°K; Freon 11, 230" to 290°K; and ethanol, 290" to 340°K. Temperatures lower than 77°K were achieved by allowing the specimen to warm up after removal from liquid helium. Temperatures above 77°K were measured by a calibrated copper-constantan thermocouple (soldered to the specimen holder) and below 77°K by a calibrated carbon resistor. The temperature of the bath changed less than 0.l0K between duplicate measurements of the resistance. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Typical plots of resistivity p vs temperature T are shown in Fig. 1. DURING the past few years the amazing developments of the chemical industry have inspired so much publicity that the feature writers assure us that we are entering a "Chemical Age," industrially as important as the "Steel Age" and the "Electric Age," so-called. Whether or not these assurances are overstatements, it is a fact that the expansion of the chemical industry during the past 25 years has been enormous. The Chemical Bureau of the War Production Board calculates the value of chemicals produced during 1944 at $8,300,000,000, no small sum even in inflated dollars. As concerns us of the Southwest oil and gas country, four significant trends of the chemical industry are most important. (1) Many of the recently developed chemical products are new creations, not substitutes,. as new and original as the invention of the light bulb, and with a field for exploitation almost as wide. (2) Many of these chemical products will enter the mass consuming markets, which require enormous tonnages of products, and such markets are setting up an industrial demand for chemicals on a mass volume basis, compared to the relatively high-priced low-volume basis ordinarily considered as the chemical outlet of the past. (3) Most of the processes involved in producing these chemicals are adapt. able to the use, all or in part, of natural gas, oil, or refinery gases as raw mate-

THE function of gas in the development and production of oil has far reaching consequences that should be emphasized. The technical aspects of the subject have recently had a great deal of attention but less thought has been given to fundamental concepts underlying oil and gas law and the many customs and practices that have grown up in the industry. I shall re- view briefly the advance in knowledge of the subject and attempt to relate these concepts to legislative, judicial and operating problems. Early writers on oil and gas in Pennsylvania noted their close association in oil pools and their contemporaneous decline in output; also, that as gas pressure decreases so does production, that new offset wells reduce the output of existing wells, and even that tubing a well lengthens its flowing life. Expanding gas was deduced as the principal expulsive force. These fundamental observations had been made at least as early as 1880.l They were treated, however, as academic considerations and did not greatly influence law or practice for many years except to instil into all operators an urgent desire to hasten offset drilling to obtain as much of the flush as possible.
