CLARENCE N. FENNER.-Mr. Gelstharp, chief chemist of the Pitts-burgh Plate Glass Co., has directed my attention to the fact that that company was using optical pyrometers obtained from the Leeds & Northrup Co. several months before the members of the Geophysical Laboratory arrived at Charleroi. I am glad to make this correction. The chief object of my paper was to emphasize the necessity of careful temperature control in the making of optical glass and to describe the kind of tests to which an optical pyrometer should be subjected at a glass plant in order to obtain information regarding the closeness with which its readings correspond with true temperatures under the condi-tions which prevail in each particular case.

No matter how perfectly sectioned or skilfully manufactured the rails used may have been, or with what care the road-bed may he maintained, legitimate results from these important factors cannot be secured unless proper attention is bestowed upon the joint-fastenings. In this country, splice-bars of various patterns furnish the practically universal joint. Other forms have been used, and are now being experimentally tested, but the typical American rail-joint consists of angle-plates or splice-bars. At the same time, it is true that scarcely a railroad engineer is satisfied with his joint. He may consider it the best of which he has knowledge, but at the same time he is well aware of many of its weak points.

The first Rodpeb mill ever built and placed in full scale successful operation went onstream in mid- 1960 at Marquette Cement Manufacturing Co.'s newly modernized portland cement production plant at Nashville, Tenn. It replaced a third stage of fine crushing and two 7x22-ft Compeb mills in the wet raw slurry grinding department. The Rodpeb mill at Nashville is similar in appearance to a Compeb mill but is larger. The mill, which operates in open circuit, is 9 ft in diameter and 38 ft long. The rod compartment is 12 ft long, with the rods being 11.5 ft in length and ranging in diameter from 4 in. down to about 1 in. The weight of the rod charge is 100,000 lb. The liners of the rod compartment are of the Lorain design.

No PETROLEUM, in commercial quantities, is found in France except the small production of the Pechelbronn field (Fig. 1) in Alsace, which produced 75,000 tons in 1923; therefore the test of the petroleum prospects of the Limagne is most interesting. Under the superintendence of M. Termier, chief engineer of the French mines, a well near Crouelle (Fig. 2) was drilled in 1921 to a depth of 856.3 m. (2808 ft.); at different depths favorable showings were encountered. The well, however, was abandoned because of drilling difficulties. A second one is now being drilled near the same place.

Computer data processing and ore reserve evaluation techniques, mainly based on geostatistical methodologies, have been developed at Agip Mining Division with the assistance of the Department of Mining Engineering of the University of Rome. A number of computer programs are available when facing problems such as optimization of sampling patterns, minable reserve estimation, grade control of output, and so on. In the present paper, the aims and the criteria followed in developing these programs are discussed. Some recent examples of application are also cited.

Basic electric-are furnace steel production mainly involves the use of two separate types of slags. The first, known as the "melt down" or oxidizing slag, which is in most cases removed from the furnace mechanically, and the heat finished under the second or deoxidizing slag, which is commonly known as the "finishing slag.'' The melt down slag is formed by the addition of lime or limestone to the charge, which combines with the oxides formed during the melting period and the product of any bottom erosion that may take place.

Strength, permeability, and deformational properties of a rock mass are influenced and often controlled by the geological discontinuities within the mass. These properties are often determined by physical tests conducted within and on portions of the rock mass under consideration. Any extrapolation of these test results to other portions of the rock mass assumes that a similar pattern of discontinuities, having similar properties, exists throughout the region of extrapolaion. A survey in which various joint properties of interest are measured may be conducted to sample the joint population of the mass. Suitable data manipulation and handling techniques are developed to permit the definition of the joint population of the rock mass. The validity of the extrapolation of test results may then be assessed.

This test is based upon the fact that metallic copper will precipitate gold and silver upoil its surface from acid solutions. Of course, the fact is not new, but its application is probably so. I have used the method with success; it recommends itself by the rapidity and ease with which it may be carried on. An auriferous cyanide solution, if made acid with sulphuric acid and boiled with finely divided, pulverulent, metallic copper, will, within a short time, deposit its gold-content on the copper. Any silver in the solution is also precipitated. If this mixture is now filtered, the filter and contents may at once be subjected to a crucible assay treatment, and its lead buttons cupelled and determined. If, instead of taking cement-copper, or any metallic copperpowder, a solution of bluestone is used after acidification, and a few small pieces of sheet aluminum are added, and the solution boiled until all the copper has come down, the result as to the precipitation of gold and silver is the same. COAL blending, in the preparation of coal before coke making, is so commonly practiced as to be almost universal. But the reasons underlying this practice, the benefits resulting from it, and the materials used in blending vary widely. This paper will outline the various phases of the subject and present information which may be correlated with work that has been done elsewhere. It will deal entirely with work done on the high-volatile coking coals of the western part of the United States, special emphasis being given to the coals of Colorado and Utah.

THE test of the English cupellation furnace should be so supported that the cupeller can change readily the elevation of the test, and at the same time watch the litharge channel. It is also important to raise or lower either side, independently of the other, in me of uneven wear of the side walls or of the breast. If the refined silver is poured from the test, it is much better to control the lowering of the test from the front than to raise the back by screws or a lever. In order to enable the cupeller to manipulate the test with one hand, when the litharge is running, and to pour the refined silver from the test without aid, I have altered the common support to the test, as shown in the accompanying drawing. The common method of supporting the test is by four screws, working in cross-bar nuts beneath the test. The points of the screws set, into the test plate upon which the test rests. These screws are usually worked by pounding or pulling upon the heads, which may be either small pulleys or straight bars, as shown on the back screws in the drawing. Accurate modeling of the semivariogram is an extremely important step in the geostatistical analysis of mineral deposits. Automatic fitting of a mathematical model is often possible but not necessarily desirable. Significant geologic and statistical information must be taken into account in the fitting process, which is not always available to the computer. Manual model fitting is, on the other hand, extremely time consuming. Interactive graphics are best suited to optimize the process. Many interactive methods are described, which are adapted to modeling semivariogram in one-, two-, or three- dimensional environments.

Efficient field direction and types of equipment needed to meet transportation problems are considered only to the extent that the desire to produce the best possible records must sometimes give way to the factor of cost. As in all engineering projects, alternative possible methods of operation must be considered in the light of relative costs as well as of the quality of results obtained, Cost may be in the background of much that is done in the field operations, but only the effect on record quality will be considered here. Record quality at a particular shot point may vary with the various factors of spread character (relative positions of geophones and shot point), shot-hole depth, formations opposite position of shot, size of charge, the effect of repeat shots, surface geology and culture in the immediate vicinity of the geophones, recorder instrument characteristics, particularly filter.

The control of thickener operation has proved difficult due to a lack of understanding of thickener operation and the long retention times involved. This is particularly true in counter current decantation circuits where the interact ion between thickeners further complicates the control problem. In this paper, the control aims and controlable variables are identified, and the development of a control system is discussed. Models of the sedimentation process, as carried out in thickeners, have been primarily aimed at thickener design. These models are examined and utilized in a dynamic model development. A preliminary dynamic model of the thickener operation is discussed here with relation to control application and its use in CCD circuit control examined.
