IN 1942 the outstanding characteristic of the petroleum industry was the multiplicity of war-induced distortions in virtually every segment of the business. So devastating was the success of the Nazi submarine campaign along the shores of the western Atlantic and on transoceanic routes that within six months after our entry into the war petroleum rationing was necessary in the East Coast area. The conquest of the Netherlands Indies by the Japanese three months after the opening of the war in the Pacific cut off our normal sources of rubber, and in our first year of war nationwide rationing of gasoline had to be invoked to conserve rubber-borne transportation facilities. Meanwhile the oil industry faced the imperative necessity for rapid expansion in the output of aviation gasoline and later accepted the vast responsibility for developing a new industry. synthetic rubber manufacture. Probably no other essentially peacetime industry has been forced to make so many complicated adjustments, yet its response to its wartime obligations has been nothing short of dramatic.

Members of the Society of Mining Engineers may well regard it as rather unusual that a paper on this subject is being presented by someone whose first taste of mining came at the age of 60 or so - someone who last heard of cathodes and anodes in 1938. On the other hand, the title does refer to the financing of a mine and at least I can claim to have spent all my business life since the war until 1981 in the world of banking, though this inevitably means that I have been used to looking at these and other problems through what you might regard as the wrong end of the telescope. The lending of money, and more particularly the provision of finance for commerce and industry, is the central job of a banker and I have been involved in this in various ways over many years, but regrettably only very marginally in the world of mining. As you will see from what follows, the rather specialised form of finance which RTZ required was, to my regret, not provided by the British banking community since the great majority of the finance came from American banks and, to a lesser extent, from German banks. I am most indebted to Mr. Roy Wright for a great deal of the nuts and bolts in this paper. He was one of the three central figures in the growth and expansion of RTZ during the 1950's and 1960's and was right at the centre of the negotiations with bankers, with governments and with many others. The going, as you will see, was far from easy. The essential basis for the financing of each of the RTZ group's mining projects was a firm long-term sales contract for sufficient of the output of the particular mine to produce the cash flow necessary to service the loans. Wherever possible, loans were raised in the same currency as the sales contracts were made. Each sales contract was designed to give the customer the product he wanted with a long-term assurance of supply and at the same time to give the bankers the protection they required. Thus the marketing concept and the financing concept for a particular mine formed one overall plan, and talks with the customers and the bankers were conducted in parallel until a satisfactory marketing/financial package was agreed in principle. Preliminary talks were begun soon after the discovery of a potentially viable orebody. As confidence about a discovery increased, customers were persuaded to enter into contingent sales contracts before the very detailed and costly business of the economic and technical feasibility study of the mine was launched; such a study might cost 10% or more of the estimated total capital cost. At the same time provisional understandings were reached with the bankers. The contingent sales contracts usually gave a period of grace of eighteen months to two years, during which time the decision whether or not to continue with the mine had to be made. This decision rested mainly on the result of the feasibility study and also on coming to a firm agreement with the bankers. If all went well and the mine went ahead, then the contingent sales contracts became firm, but they fell away if the decision was negative. The Company was fortunate that during the whole period when its major mines were being developed, world trade was increasing rapidly and Japan was becoming a dominant industrial power. The Japanese supported many of the mines, including Hamersley Iron Ore, Lornex Copper, Bougainville Copper to name a few, with the basic long-term sales contracts that enabled their development. The Germans supported Palabora and to a lesser extent Bougainville. The mines were financed as individual projects generally with a loan/equity ratio of about 65/35, without legal recourse to RTZ for the loans. RTZ was, however, responsible for providing any capital overruns required to bring the mines into commercial operations. Nevertheless, the RTZ management regarded itself as morally responsible to the lenders because, Palabora aside, the sales contracts had either a fixed selling price (like Hamersley), an indexed price (like the Elliot Lake Uranium Mines and Mary Kathleen), or a floor price (as in Lornex, Bougainville and Rossing). In explanation of the delay, which may have been noted by members of the Institute, which has affected both the Bulletin and Volume .59 of the Transactions, we may mention that our printers, in common with nearly all publishing concerns in the country, have recently been overwhelmed with work on text books and similar technical matter required in connection with the education of the student-army recently inaugurated by the Federal Government. Although we regret the delay in the issuing of our periodical, we cannot help feeling- that our publications are perhaps second in importance to the needs of the army. It is to be hoped that the present excessive demand for printing of- this sort will soon be passed, after which we shall resume publication with more punctuality.

There is an extensive literature relative to gas, oil, and the more solid hydrocarbons; but when it has all been digested and summarized, the resulting information is far from being satisfactory. The problems which have received the most attention are naturally those which relate to the successful exploitation and utilization of the deposits. From what is known of their geologic occurrence, theories have been formulated and rules laid down for the guidance of prospectors. The technology of the products has been made the subject of special chemical investigations. The geologic interrelation of the hydrocarbons, however, has not been considered in a broad manner, and the principles which have governed the origin of the economic bodies have been but imperfectly expressed. INTERNAL The year 1976 was another outstanding year in the operation of the Institute and in the success of its varied activities. Total AIME membership reached 59,773 for a gain of. 6.4 percent. Total revenue increased to $5,111,2 10, up 22.4 percent, and balance sheet assets increased to $8,479,612, up 12.2 percent from the previous year. AIME and its constituent units conducted 30 technical meetings during the year, and attendance was up at most of them. Publications issued by the Constituent Societies continued a healthy growth. During the year 9 new local Sections were established, and at the end of the year the Institute had 150 Sections, with 19 of them overseas. Details on all of these operations are on pages 2 and 3 of this report.

TO these reports you are referred for additional details of the year's activity. Finances.-Income for 1933 from all sources totaled $121,690 com- pared with $138,331 in 1932. Incidentally, this exceeded the income as estimated in the budget by $7,190; the largest item being a "surplus" of $3,316 over the budget expectancy as to member dues. As compared with 1932 the most important items of shrinkage in income were $9,000 from dues and initiation fees; $5,500 from the magazine, MINING AND METALLURGY; and $2,500 from sales of publications other than the magazine.

The equilibrium of gaseous H20-H2 mixtures with liquid iron-columbium alloys in the range 0.2 to 2.4 pct Cb shows that the activity coefficient of oxygen is strongly diminished by Cb. The oxide in equilibvium with the melt is identified as CbO2. The equi-librium constant at 1600 deg C is [%Cb][fo. % 0]2 = 2.9 x 10-4 where log fo= —0.14 [%Cb]. The deoxidizing power is comparable to that of vanadium, COLUMBIUM (niobium) is finding increasing use as an alloying element in steel. It forms several stable oxides and is removed from the steel bath by oxidizing slags. The specific oxide formed in steel-making is not known although Sazanov snd Shvarts-man,' in their study of its partition between slag and metal, have assumed this to be Cb2O5 It is the purpose of this study to determine its deoxidation equilibrium at 1600°c, the nature of the oxide formed and the interaction between columbium and oxygen in the melt. The investigation was based on the reaction H2 + O=H2O; Kl=ph2o/(pH2[%O]) [1] in which 0 signifies oxygen dissolved in the liquid Fe-Cb alloy. The method and equipment of recent studies2,3 were utilized. In brief, the molten alloy, contained in a small crucible, is held in a controlled mixture of steam, hydrogen, and argon until equilibrium is reached. It is then cooled quickly in a stream of helium and analyzed for columbium and oxygen, the latter by vacuum fusion.4 The solubility of the oxide in liquid iron is determined by visual observation of scum formation on the surface of the melt. Crucibles of MgO proved unsatisfactory because of partial reduction at the metal interface. Pure A12O3 crucibles were heavily blackened by the melt and could not be used at high concentrations of columbium. Silica crucibles were more satisfactory but these introduced some silicon into the melt thus necessitating an uncertain but small correction for its effect on the activities of the other solutes. In silica it was possible to observe the scum formation when the melt became saturated and there was no apparent reaction between scum and crucible. The procedure for saturated melts was as follows. The alloy charge composed of electrolytic iron and columbium grain was melted and held at constant temperature. The gas ratio H2O:H2 was progressively increased by raising the saturator temperature until a point was reached at which a bright film appeared on the surface and covered it completely. This film could be dissolved by raising the temperature of the melt and it reappeared when the temperature was lowered. Under a partial film covering, utilizing bare areas for temperature measurement, the melt was brought to equilibrium with the atmosphere by holding at temperature for about 1 hr as suggested by Dastur.5 INTERACTION IN THE MELT Several experiments were made without columbium to establish a base in silica crucibles. The results are shown in Table I. Except for one run, they agreed well with Floridis1 comparable results in other crucibles. The value of log K1 is taken from Table I as 0.58. This is slightly larger than Floridis' result, probably because of less elaborate safeguards against thermal diffusion. Results obtained in the Fe-Cb-0 series in which no scum formed are shown in Table 11. The equilibrium ratio Kl is defined as ph2o/(ph2[%O]). It is related to the equilibrium constant K1 as follows:

Approximate solutions are presented for the heat-flow equations in a loss-free linear system with a moving source and with heat transfer by convection and conduction, representing in situ combustion in an oil reservoir. The rate of heat generation and the velocity vf of the source (flame front) are assumed constant. A cold front or convection front caused by the cooling effect of in-jected air develops behind the flame front and moves with velocity vc, which is determined by the thermal properties of the air and rock. Because of thermal conduction the fronts are not sharp; i.e., they do not represent temperature discontinuities. The following solutions apply after a sufficiently long time. where Q is heat generated per unit volume of formation, k is thermal conductivity, CF is volumetric heat capacity, a is thermal diffusivity, and subscripts 1 and 2 refer to values behind and ahead of the flame front, respectively. The parameter CF2 is contained in v . Te is initial reservoir temper- . C2 e ature and air-injection temperature. Other mathematically possible solutions are presented. The different solutions result from the use of different values for various physical parameters. The solution just presented is thought to be most commonly applicable. INTRODUCTION In this paper, approximate analytical expressions are derived for the temperature profile developed in the underground combustion method of oil recovery. A qualitative description of the process may be found in a paper by Tadema.1 The flame front is regarded as a moving source with a constant rate of heat generation. Heat transfer is by conduction and convection. Previous publications, of which a few are cited here, 2-5 have also attacked this problem and have presented solutions pertaining to different methods of approximating or idealizing the process studied. The present paper also treats an idealized case: linear flow is assumed for heat and fluids, and vaporization and condensation effects are neglected. The results obtained are similar to those derived by Bailey and Larkin,3 but are obtained by an entirely different procedure. The method used here should give considerably greater insight into the physics of the in situ combustion process. Four types of cases are considered, distinguished by thermal and fluid-flow properties of the system. A constant rate of heat generation and constant rate of flame-front advance are assumed. Flame-front temperature is determined for each case using a heat balance which involves the entire temperature profile. The applicability of the different solutions to real systems is discussed after they are all presented. Again, this is done for the purpose of understanding better the physics of the process. Consideration of the nonapplicable solutions and of the reasons for their not applying is significant. In a paper by Cooperman,4 the only case solved is one considered here as not applicable. Fluid flow, as such (pressures, saturations, oil recovery, etc.), is not treated. This subject has been covered in a paper by Wilson, et al.6 Also, we are not concerned with requirements for continuance of the process; we only attempt to determine the temperature history for cases where the process has continued for some time. The grain-refinement effect of electromagnetic stirring of Sn-Pb alloys during solidification is investigated at higher field strength and in larger-sized samples. It is found that the grain-refining effect is due to a crystal multiplication phenomenon rather than a nucleation phenomenon. The effect increases with sample size for a fixed field strength and a fixed supercooling bath temperatures. The effect in other alloys was investigated. IN a recent publication1 it was reported that significant grain refinement could be produced during the solidification of a supercooled melt of Sn-Pb alloy when a critical degree of electromagnetic stirring was present in the melt. Thus, for a particular supercooling, AT, a critical magnetic field, Hc, existed at which the number of grains per unit volume, n, increased rather abruptly by a factor of 103 to 104 as the field, H, was increased by a small amount. It was further found that the undercooling at which the melt spontaneously nucleated, ?Tn, was independent of the magnetic field. These authors matched their experimental results against the qualitative expectations of existing theories and found each theory somewhat unsatisfactory. One important question that was not answered in this previous work was "should the effect be classed as a nucleation phenomenon or as a crystal-multiplication phenomenon?" Other valid questions that need answering are: i) do higher magnetic field strengths alter the nature of the results?; ii) what is the effect of higher lead content in the alloy?; iii) what changes occur when one extends the experiments to larger-diameter samples?; and iv) is this a universal effect applicable to the grain refinement of all materials? The present work directs its attention to answering these five questions. The

The response of the Guard Electrode sonde (LL3) and the Laterolog (LL7) can be mathematically computed only for cases that do not represent realistic conditions. A resistance network analogue that simulates a number of typical—although idealized—formations was used instead to obtain, for both devices, a large number of resistivity logs and current distribution maps. From these data, charts were prepared for estimating true resistivities under a number of conditions. Some of these charts and current distribution maps are presented. INTRODUCTION Two main benefits are expected from a resistivity log: (1) obtaining geological information for mapping and other purposes, and (2) obtaining petrophysical data, based on true rock resistivity. The geological information can be derived from any resistivity curve having sufficient vertical detail, but true rock resistivities frequently are difficult to determine with desired accuracy because we do not have sufficient interpretation data. This is particularly true for the records given by the Laterolog tools. The object of this paper is to throw some light on the factors affecting the responses of these tools so that better resistivity data can be obtained from Laterologs. LATEROLOGS Laterolog measuring systems are of two types: the LL3 sonde, frequently called "Guard", and the LL7 sonde. Both measure the resistance between a single exploring electrode placed in the borehole and a faraway return electrode whose influence will be assumed here to be negligible. Although the principles of these tools have already been outlined,1-3 it is desirable to review them briefly in this article. LL3 Fig. 1, left side, represents a long cylindrical, vertical current electrode placed in a medium of uniform resistivity. The current leaving the center section of the electrode flows essentially along horizontal lines, delineating a surface having the shape of a biconcave lens. It is the elec- trical resistance offered to this particular group of current lines that is measured by the Guard tool. This is done in practice by having a long cylindrical electrode consisting of three sections physically and electrically separated by thin insulating washers, as shown in the center of the figure, and keeping the three sections at the same potential. It is obvious, for all practical purposes, that the current and potential distributions about this electrode are the same, as if we had a continuous electrode of same dimensions. Because the three sections are electrically separated, the resistance seen by the center section E can be independently measured. This section will be called the exploring electrbde, or E electrode. Its height generally is from a few inches to 1 ft. The outer sections are the guards G, which are several feet long. The combined length of the three sections is from 10 to 12 ft for the tools currently used in the petroleum industry. Let V denote the potential difference between E and the faraway return electrode, and I be the current flowing between these two electrodes. The resistance (Re) seen by the exploring electrode is VII, and the corresponding apparent resistivity is Ra = k(Re),............(1) where k is the tool calibration factor. The previous description establishes that the Guard tool uses that central portion of the sonde from which, in a uniform medium, the current follows essentially horizontal paths. THE development of a cement that will resist the destructive action of sea water and other corrosive waters is a problem that has occupied cement chemists for the past one hundred years. It has been found that of the various salts that commonly occur in corrosive waters, sodium sulphate, magnesium sulphate and magnesium chloride are most destruc-tive to cement. Many investigations have been carried out in the United States, in Canada, and in Europe to solve the problem of what constitutes a sulphate-resistant cement, and during the past 10 years some of the findings give definite information in this respect. COMPOSITION OF CEMENT Portland cement is composed of four major compounds: 1. Tricalcium silicate 3CaO.Si02 (C3S) 2. Dicalcium silicate 2CaO.Si02 (C2S) 3. Tricalcium aluminate 3CaO.Al203 (C3A) 4. Tetracalcium aluminoferrite 4CaO.Al203.Fe203 (C4AF) The two calcium silicates are the main contributors of strength. The tricalcium aluminate contributes some to the early strength of the cement but has the least resistance of the four compounds toward the attack of sulphate waters. The tetracalcium aluminoferrite does not contribute very much to the strength, but is far more resistant to sulphate waters than the tricalcium aluminate. When hardened cement is exposed to water containing sodium or magnesium sulphates, these salts will react with the hydrated tricalcium aluminate in the cement and form compounds that will cause a swelling, disruption and crumbling of the hardened cement.

The basic research program of the Scientific Coal Research Institute at Ostrava - Radvanice into the problem of geophysics has been influenced by the specific nature of present urgent geo- physical problems in mines and directed to attain higher grade of effectiveness, safety, and overall economy in mining activity. The research has been divided into two basic trends: Seismoaccoustic research deals with questions pertaining to safety in mining especially when work is in coal seams under "heavy roofs", i-e., thick beds of sandstone prone to rock bumps and characterized by caving. Methods have been developed with the definite aim to determine the time and space prognosis of critical states of tension in the rock mass when stability is disturbed as a result of mining activity. Seismic research is directed towards the determination of detailed structural and tectonic elements of the internal geological formation of the Carboniferous rocks, the establishment of continuity or tectonic faulting of coal seams, and the evaluation of magnitude, shape, and time changes in the rock mass surrounding the mine workings. The measurements have been applied either from the surface or in the underground workings according to the specific nature of individual problems. Satisfactory results have been obtained in some branches of this research, other branches being still in the stage of development. Remarkable results have been achieved in the development of seismoaccoustic methods designed to establish the time prognosis of dangerous dynamic phenomena accompanying the process of strata deterioration above the worked longwall face. Introduction Chemical and mineralogical constitution play a very important role in the processing of ores because they dictate the method, either physical or chemical, for extracting the mineral or metal. Similarly, the mineralogical nature of the ore, especially the grain size of the valuable minerals, is very important in its processing. The fineness of the grain may be such that physical separation pro- cesses may be eliminated in preference to chemical techniques. In the past, very little attention has been devoted to the geo- logical and mineralogical occurrences which may be potential sources of ores by both the geologist and mineral processing engineer. On the one hand, geologists have devoted less attention to lower grade, complex mineral deposits, and, therefore, may have inadvertently curtailed an exploration 2rogra.m. On the other hand, the metal- lurgists have neglected to study in detail the geological environ- ments and mineralization of potential ores with the view of deter- mining the critical parameter that could assist in economically processing complex submarginal deposits. In the final analysis, a chemical processing technique converts the valuable metals to a mobile state under conditions similar to those which deposited originally in the host rock. The relationship between ore-genesis and chemical processing is close when the process of mineral or metal deposition in a particular ore deposit is understood--putting the metal in solution by reversing the process of deposition is re- latively easy. For this reason, some researchers and educators have been stressing the importance of ore-genesis, geochemistry, mineral equilibria, and ionic equilibria in studying and explaining the

I have thought it well to lay before the Institute some account of the Vallecillo Mines, now, I believe, the only paying ones in American hands in northeastern Mexico, including the States of Nuevo Leon, Coahuila and Tamaulipas. The authentic history of these mines dates from their ownership by an American Company in the year 1851, when they were bought by the Vallecillo Silver Mining Company of New York. They had been worked before by the Spaniards, but had been abandoned for many years, on account of the heavy expense of drainage and the constant incursions of the Indians. The company commenced work with several well-known New York capitalists among its stockholders, and had a large fund of both money and enthusiasm. The first point of attack was at a shaft on a mine known as the Jesus Maria, which had the most favorable traditions. Extensive buildings were put up, and two sets of pumps were successively tried. After the second pump, with a steam-cylinder 5 feet in diameter and 10 feet stroke and a plunger 20 inches in diameter, had failed to do more than hold the water, with infinite labor, at the 250 feet level, and after a thorough exploitation of the whole mine above that level had failed to yield more than some $30,000 worth of ore, it was resolved to abandon the effort. Given: One large, but dated open-pit copper mine and processing plants, down about one third in production capacity in decade because of declining ore grade. Solve for: Restoration of former peak capacity without further losses during period of reconstruction. That is the problem that Kennecott's Utah Cop- per Division began solving in 1963. Most of the work went to a task force of engineers, several of whom were plucked out of line jobs and assigned to the so-called "Expansion Project" for the duration. There was no doubt from the beginning that effective cooperation between Expansion Project engineers and operators was critical to success, and personnel was chosen accordingly. This foresight paid off. The Expansion Project is all but complete, and the Utah Copper Division is returning to its rated capacity of 300,000 tons per year of copper metal.

Introduction The design of a mineral processing flowsheet involves many factors. The importance of the sample can not be overemphasized. Competent and thorough mineralogical examinations are important as an aid in designing the test program. Designing and conducting the laboratory test program is basic to the design of the flowsheets. In the project under consideration a flotation pilot plant was conducted to prove the process and to provide a realistic prediction of metallurgical results. Moreover, the pilot plant operation provides important pilot plant design data. Finally, accurate and clear reporting is essential so that the information developed can be utilized advantageously by the client and the engineering firm. The design of a minerals processing flowsheet is a team effort. Engineers from the mining company, the research organization, and the engineering firm all contribute to the effort.

Many mining engineers considering in place leaching for the first time are uncertain as to how to evaluate ore bodies for potential leachability. Evidence presented in this report emphasizes the critical role of permeability in such evaluations. Whether an engineer is considering leaching "tight" formations typified by the porphyry copper deposits of the southwest or the permeable uraniferous sandstones of Texas and Wyoming, permeability measurements are the keystone of any testing program. Permeability tests range from cheap and easy to highly expensive and sophisticated operations. Constant head, variable head, and pumping tests all have application in evaluating ore bodies for in-place leaching. Costs of these tests will not unduly deflate the pocketbooks of most mining companies. The basic procedures for selecting and running these field tests--including preparing suitable wells--are reviewed for the benefit of newcomers to in-place leaching.
