The production of petroleum in Venezuela during 1931 was approximately 118,767,000 bbl., a decrease of 18,904,000 bbl., or 13.7 per cent, compared with the previous year. This is the first break in production, which has risen steadily since 1920, and is attributable to restriction of output and drilling operations, in harmony with lessened demand, rather than to any real decline in potential production. Venezuela ranked third among the world's producers, having lost second place to Russia. The Bolivar coastal fields, which were extended approximately 14 miles southward during the year, continued to supply most of the oil. La Concepcion, Los Manueles and Quiriquire all showed marked increases. A new field of light oil was discovered on the north coast near Puerto Cumarebo, State of Falcon. Exports declined 15.7 per cent, from 137,377,000 bbl. in 1930 to about 115,800,000 bbl. in 1931. Crude oil in storage at the end of the year amounted to 7,450,000 bbl., a decrease of 2,150,000 as compared with 1930. Tankage utilized is about 40 per cent of the available space. A drastic decline in drilling activity reduced the number of wells completed in producing areas from 401 in 1930 to 116 in 1931. Only three wells were drilled in the Lagunillas field proper, but, the amount of closed-in production and proven acreage gave assurance of a satisfactory potential output. Of the 1580 wells drilled to the close of 1931 in the producing areas of the Bolivar Coast, 631 were active and 853 were closed in; 96 had been abandoned. The status of the active wells at the end of 1931 was as follows: flowing, 331; pumping, 99; gas-air lift, 201. Producing wells closed in numbered 452; workovers, 8; totally inactive, 393. Lago Petroleum Corp. and Venezuela Gulf Oil Co. placed in operation the first units of their electric power plants, the former at Punta Gorda and the latter at Las Morochas, and are replacing steam power in their operations as rapidly as possible. Compressor stations were also installed for use in connection with air-gas lift operations. A considerable volume of gas was treated in gasoline extraction plants, the tail gas being recom-pressed and utilized together with natural high-pressure gas, for stimulation of production.

John Philip Zannaras (Registered Professional Engineer, Congress, Ariz.)- The authors show in their [Fig. 4] the cumulative results of grinding with two sizes of bails, one 30 mm and the other 20 mm. The Gaudin-Meloy probability for breakage for a single fall used by the authors in their paper is given by their [Eq. 6]. Another form of [Eq. 6] is given by Gaudin-Meloy in their paper as follows: [ ] From the definition of A given by Gaudin-Meloy it is obvious that A30 is greater than A., it therefore follows from the foregoing equation that according to the Gaudin-Meloy formula the probability of breakage for a single fall of all the balls in the 20-mm experiment was more than 2.25 times the probability of breakage in a single fall of all the 30-mm balls which is contradicted by the authors' experimental evidence in [Fig. 4] in which is shown that much more grinding took place with the 30-mm balls. In fact the authors present convincing evidence that the Gaudin-Meloy work is erroneous because their work is based only on a geometric configuration and on ambiguous and uncertain definition of A and disregards the fact that the distribution of fracture depends on other important and indispensable factors including the intensity of stress caused on the feed grain by the balls. That there is an immense and chaotic variation of stresses caused on the feed grains by the balls is shown by a formula, derived by this writer and published in 1955. The derivation of this formula is given in the Appendix of this discussion; it contains the variables in the operation of ball mills and is based on the science of mechanics-not on probabilities. [ ] where T is the unit stress in pounds per square inch produced by the moving load, h is the height in feet through which P has fallen, E is the modulus of elasticity of the rock, P is weight of one ball, and L is the size of the grain (assumed to be a cube of side L). It will be shown by this writer's formula that when a 30-mm ball strikes any size of feed grain it will cause 1.837 times higher stress than the 20-mm ball when striking the same size grain. It will be shown that when the 30-mm ball or the 20-mm ball strikes a feed grain of 0.1 mm it will cause 90 times more stress on the grain than when it strikes a 2-mm grain.

The structure, composition, and morphology of the carbide phases present in the nickel-base superalloy, Mar-M200, hare been determined and three carbide phases observed. The MC carbide is a solidification product, and the M23 Co and M6C carbides are both prod~icts of solid-state precipitation. The identity of each phase usas determined by both X-ray and electron-diffraction techn~ques. Compositions of all three carbides were studied using the electron beam micro-probe analyzer and by unalyszs of electrolytically extracted residues. Optical and electron microscopy were employed in order that the time/temperature -dependent behavior of the carbides might be observed. Supplementary studies were completed on thin foils and oriented single crystals to determine the mor-phology and orientation relationship of each phase with that of the matrix. MAR-M~OO* is a high-temperature, creep-resistant superalloy designed for use in the as-cast condition. The "as-cast" microstructure consists of a solid-solution matrix, referred to as gamma (y), which contains a general, coherent precipitate of the inter-metallic Ni3(A1,Ti) referred to as gamma prime (?). As a result of dendritic segregation during solidification, a degenerate, spherulitic ? -?' eutectic constituent is present at the grain boundaries and the in-terdendritic regions, which is nucleated by the y on the dendrite tips. A primary carbide phase, a solidification product, is also present at the grain boundaries and in the interdendritic areas, and an additional carbide appears at the grain boundaries as a fine discontinuous precipitate. The alloy is particularly susceptible to heat treatment. For example, the mechanical properties of the columnar grained mater- ial are substantially improved by solution heat treatment, followed by an intermediate temperature age. Metallographic examination of heat-treated material reveals, however, that exposure to elevated temperatures has a marked effect on the microstructure of the alloy; in particular, it is observed that precipitation of considerable amounts of various carbide phases occur. The following investigation was carried out to determine the morphology, composition, and behavior of the carbides in Mar-Ma00 as an aid to the determination of their effect on the mechanical properties and stability of the alloy. THE PRIMARY MC CARBIDE The MC carbide phase appears in the interdendritic interstices and the grain boundaries. In directionally solidified Mar-M200 the carbide appears as very small particles in the chilled region, Fig. l(a), whereas in material less affected by the chill, it becomes larger and develops a dendritic morphology, Fig. 1(b). Step polishing of metallographic specimens from this region shows that in directionally solidified material the individual carbide dendrites are connected in a dendritic network within the metallic interdendritic interstices, whereas in material from the chilled region and in conventional Mar-M200 they are discontinuous, isolated dendrites. No orientation relationship exists between the primary carbide and the matrix.

EARLY workers attempted to study the structure of alloys by measurement of equilibrium electrode potentials in aqueous solutions containing ions of the metals from which the alloy was made.1 The method was subject to such limitations (e.g., the difficulty in attaining electro-chemical equilibrium at low temperatures) that it has not been widely used by metallurgists. Recently, Seltz and co-workers have introduced a greatly improved method for studying alloys by measurement of equilib-rium electrode potentials in molten salts.2-4 The mathematical treatment is the same, of course, as for equilibrium potentials of amalgams in aqueous solutions.5 This method will probably find extensive use, since it makes possible not only the deter-mination of phase fields of equilibrium diagrams but also the determination of certain thermodynamic quantities which can be used advantageously in metal-lurgical calculations. However, the method presents difficulties. With many metallic and alloy electrodes, reversibility is not readily obtainable. Also, the difficulty of obtaining suitable material from which to make the cells is increased as the temper-ature is increased. Moreover, the necessity of carrying out measurements in a vacuum requires additional apparatus and intro-duces considerable difficulty, especially at the higher temperatures.

Results are presented of a study on the combined influences of ingot dendrite am spacing and thermo-mechanical treatments on the fracture behavior and mechanical properties of high purity 7075 aluminum alloy. The most important single variable influencing mechanical properties was found to be undissolved alloy second Phase (microsegregation inherited from the original ingot). Ultimate and yield strengths were found to increase linearly with decreasing amount of alloy second phase while ductility increased markedly. At low amounts of second phase, transverse properties were approximately equal to longitudinal properties. In tensile testing, microcracks and holes were invariably found to originate in or around second phase particles. Fracture occurred both by propagation of cracks and coalescence of holes, depending on the distribution and amount of second phase. IN most commercial wrought alloys, second phase particles are present that are inherited from the original cast ingot. These include, for example, non-equilibrium alloy second phases such as CuAl2 and impurity second phases such as FeA13 and Cr2A1, in aluminum alloys. A previous paper1 has dealt with the morphology of these second phases in cast and wrought aluminum 7075 alloy, and with their behavior during various thermomechanical treatments. In this paper we discuss the influence of the particles on mechanical properties and fracture behavior of the alloy. Previous experimental work indicating a direct and major effect of second phase particles on mechanical properties (especially on ductility) includes the work of Edelson and Baldwin on pure copper.' Also relevant are the many studies demonstrating the important effect of nonmetallic inclusions on the fracture of. steel.3'4 Work on aluminum includes that of Antes, Lipson, and Rosenthal5 who showed that a dramatic improvement in ductility of wrought aluminum alloys of the 7000 series is achieved by eliminating second phases. It now seems well established that included second phases play a dominant role in controlling ductility (as measured, for example, by reduction in area in a tensile test) of a variety of materials. There is, therefore, considerable current interest in the mechanisms by which second phase particles affect ductile fracture. Experiments done by various workers have shown that second phase particles or discontinuities in the microstructure are potential sites for nuclea-tion of microcracks and of holes,6-l3 which then grow and cause premature fracture and the loss of ductility. Theoretical attempts have been made to explain the observed phenomena; most are able to explain observations qualitatively, but lack quantitative agreement. Much experimental work needs to be done to aid extension of theoretical models. A recent review article by Rosenfield summarizes work in this general area.14 PROCEDURE Material used in the previously described study on solution kinetics of cast and wrought 7075 alloy1 was also used in this study. Procedures for ingot casting, solution treating, and working were described in detail in that paper. Test bars were obtained for material of 76 initial dendrite arm spacing (11/2 in. from the ingot base) and 95 µ initial dendrite arm spacing (51/2 in. from the ingot base) for the following thermomechanical treatments (solution temperature 860°F; reduction by cold rolling). a) Solution treated 12 hr, reduced 2/1, 4/1, and 16/1. b) Solution treated 12 hr, reduced 16/1, solution treated approximately 5 hr after reduction. c) Same as a) except solution treated 24 hr prior to reduction. d) Same as b) except solution treated 24 hr prior to reduction. e) Same as d) except solution treated 20 hr after reduction. Test bars were taken both longitudinally and transverse to the rolling direction. Transverse properties are in the long transverse direction; since the final product was sheet (0.030 in. thick), properties in the short transverse direction could not be obtained. Test bars were flat specimens, of gage cross section1/-| in. by 0.030 in. and 1/2 in. gage length. After machining the test bars, they were given an additional 1/2 hr solution treatment of 860°F and aged 24 hr at 250°F. Three bars were tested for each location and thermomechanical treatment, after rejection of mechanically flawed bars. The average results of these three bars are reported. Elongation was measured using a $ in. extensometer and reduction in area was determined using a profilometer to measure the area after fracture. INFLUENCE OF THERMOMECHANICAL TREATMENTS AND SECOND PHASE ON MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Results of mechanical testing are presented in Figs. 1 to 4 and in tabular form in the Appendix. A general conclusion from results obtained is that details of the thermomechanical treatments studied were important only insofar as they influenced the amount of residual second phase. The region of metallic ore deposits in northern Chile, southern Peru, western Bolivia, and northwestern Argentina occurs in arid zones at altitudes as high as 6 km (19,700 ft). Because surface water supplies are meager, new mines require unexploited sources of water. Prolific ground water aquifers occur in salar basins in this region of the Andean Highlands. Exploration water wells have been constructed and aquifer characteristics have been tested in eight salar basins. Results indicate ground water quality is good. Aquifer transmissivity and storage computed from results of pumping tests indicate maximum capacities of more than 170 L/sec (2700 gpm) for individual production water wells. Results of investigations conducted by the authors demonstrate that ground water reservoirs in the Andean Highlands comprise a source of large quantities of water for the mineral industry.

In some districts of the bituminous coal field the problem of constructing bulkheads to seal off water under pressure is becoming increasingly important. Recently this matter has been brought very much to the front by the loss of a large Illinois mine due to failure of a bulkhead that separated it from several old, flooded mines. As this great misfortune has provoked much inquiry about proper bulkhead design, it is felt that a description of the successful and extensive water-sealing practice at three mines that have different natural conditions will be of considerable interest to those connected with properties having a present or future water problem and to engineers that may have to design safe bulkheads of economical construction. These three mines are the Saxton and Dresser, near Terre Haute, Ind., and the Hegeler, near Danville, Ill. All three have water conditions that make it necessary to regularly seal off all worked-out sections of the mine, and there are considerably over a hundred bulkheads in each. AS far as the writers know, these three mines are the only ones in the bituminous coal fields of the United States with anything like so large a number of water seals and experience, although a number of other mines are known to have a few bulkheads. More detail will be included herein on the Saxton mine than on the others, as the writers are more familiar with it. General Mining System All three of the mines use the same general panel room-and-pillar system, which consists of rooms turned both ways off room entries and a solid block of coal left on all sides of the completed panel except on the cross-entry side, where a heavier pillar is pierced by two entries for haulage and air. On completion of the panel the two entries arc sealed and the panel is then isolated from the rest of the mine. Owing to water conditions, no pillars are pulled; recovery inside the panel barrier pillars is approximately 65 per cent.

THERE are regularly manufactured in the eleven Bessemer steel rail mills of the United States, 119 patterns* of steel rails, of 27 different weights per yard. This list does not include patterns which, although still largely inn use, are regarded by experts as obsolete, and which would swell the number to nearly 300; nor does it include all, the patterns for which rolls are kept on hand to fill a possible demand; nor does it include extra pattern,- rolled in one finishing groove by opening or closing the rolls so as to get different weights with the same contours. The list embraces only those separate patterns which are subject to current orders. How thoroughly modern these patterns are, is shown by the fact that of the whole 119, there are but five patterns of conspicuously bad shape; all the rest more or less completely illustrate the standard features,-a heavy bead,. light web and flanges, and a good angle :to hold the fish-plate. Sixty-two per cent. of the patterns have the "Chanute" head, which was not designed until 1874.† Sixty-four per cent. of the 119 patterns are embraced under five weights per yard,; three only of these vary from standard type; there am thus 76 patterns, all of them modern and standard, to represent five different weights, for which five patterns would perfectly answer. Of the 60-lb. rails, there is only one of the pear-head type, while a dozen of the bevelled head templets cannot be distinguished from each other * From all the works 188 patterns were sent to me as standard. Of these I found 119 different shapes and 69 duplicates. † Since this paper was read I have seen at the Bethlehem Iron. Works the templet of a 68-pound Lehigh Valley rail, with the bevelled head, usually called the "Chanute" head, and marked "Templet of 1872." This is shown on Plate II. I learn that iron rails, with bevelled heads, were rolled at Bethlehem prior to 1870.

This name is applied to the present mining law, as enacted in 1872 and since, to indicate its leading characteristic—in which it differs from all previous mining laws of this or any other country. The earlier act, passed in 1866, was practically the first attempt of Congress to deal with the question of mining titles upon the public domain. It was framed after nearly twenty years of acquiescence on the part of the Government in the self-constituted tribunals, officials, rules, and customs of the mining districts. In its recognition of these, and in several other particulars, the act of 1866 was open to serious criticisms. It is the purpose of this paper, not to trace the history of legislation on this subject, or show in detail what were the faults of the earlier law, but rather, by a discussion of certain aspects of the present law, to point out how great a revoluition it has effected in the rights of mining locators, and to indicate some of the difficulties attending its application. In the attempt to correct the vagueness of the act of 1866 an entirely new elernent was introduced into the law, bringing with it a new set of difficulties. Under the act of 1866 and the miners' customs which it followed, the lode was the thing claimed and subsequently acquired by patent. And the claim to a given number of feet on the longitudinal course of the lode was rooted in 'a discovery of any part of the lode in any part of the claim. ("Extensions" could in many districts—perhaps universally—be located and claimed on the strength of the discovery in the principal claim to which they referred; but this is a point not essential to the present discussion.) It was not necessary to find the outcrop or the upper edge of a lode in order to lay a valid location upon it. An explorer, sinking a shaft and intersecting a lode not already discovered and claimed by another, could claim by that discovery the number of feet along that lode which the local laws might permit (not exceeding the maximum set by the United States statute) whether his sur-

U.S. environmentalists have tended to oppose all new energy developments. Their efforts may be counterproductive because opposition to, say, offshore oil directly leads to the continued use of other energy sources that may have a higher social cost. Rather than attempting to eliminate all pollution from energy production, which would be prohibitively expensive, one should minimize the social cost of energy production for the given demand. Linear programming is used to rank various oils (California State and O.C.S., Gulf of Alaska, Prudhoe Bay, Athabasca tar sands, oil shale and certain foreign crudes) in terms of their social desirability. The objective is to minimize the cost of supplying the California market, subject to resource, sulphur and oil spill constraints. Social desirability is indicated by the inclusion of the oil in the optimal solution and the size of the associated shadow price. the larger the shadow price, the greater the benefits of increased production. The more negative, the greater the cost associated with forcing consumption of that fuel. The environmental shadow prices indicate the size of the trade-off between a particular environmental standard and minimum cost. The trade-offs can be surprisingly large. any reasonable spill standard can be achieved by changing the development pattern. Generally, the further offshore, the smaller is the environmental degradation, but the more expensive is the oil. Foreign oils can be economically and environmentally inferior to domestic oils. Crude from the California O.C.S., San Joaquin Valley end Prudhoe Bay appears a valuable resource, while the Gulf of Alaska, synthetic and foreign crudes appear marginal to submarginal.

The manufacturing and domestic consumers of anthracite are beginning to realize the fact more fully, that the coal purchased for any one year does not seem to burn so freely, does not fire with so little trouble, and does not last so long as that purchased during other years, or vice versa. Where coals of different sizes, or from different districts, are offered to the trade by the same or competing salesmen, the question suggests itself, which shall we buy ? Among housekeepers, who are the most numerous class of consumers, though on the smallest scale, distinction is seldom recognized among these anthracites. By other consumers the coals are grouped into those which, when burned, will produce either a white or a red ash, special qualities being arbitrarily attached to each. Others, again, know only of three varieties : (1) Those from the WYoming and LacKawanna fields, or the coals shipped from the northernmost basins over the railroads running through northeastern Pennsylvania direct to New York—notably, the Delaware. Lackawanna and Western, Delaware and Hudson, and Erie railways; (2) those shipped by the Lehigh Valley Railroad and the Lehigh and Susqaehanna division of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad down the Lehigh Valley ; and (3) those shipped over the main line of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad down the Schuylkill Valley. In special localities, where a favorite coal is largely used, the consumer will speak of one class, composed of his favorite coal, which possibly comes from two or three collieries, with a total aggregate annual production of less than a million tons; and of a second class, composed of the coals from all the other collieries in the anthracite

When a mine has ore averaging 5% lead, 7% zinc, 0.60% copper, 1/4 oz gold, and 6 oz of silver, adequate reserves, power and water, easy access to market, and is situated in beautiful natural surroundings with the advantages of a big city within a few hours drive, there is little left to be desired. Such a mine is the Mayflower mine of the New Park Mining Co. situated 30 miles from Salt Lake City in the Wasatch Mountains near Keetley, Utah.

Maintenance of desirable plastic flow properties of weighted drilling muds may be greatly simplified by use of centrifugal classification to control the drilled solids content. The new application of a decanting type centrifuge to separate and reject the low density solids from the weighting material results in a drilling mud of greatly improved quality with lower values of yield and rigidity. Its practicality and economy has been proven in field operation. The degree of separation of light and heavy solids is not limited by the machine, but by the particle size distribution of the solids in the mud. Removal of the low density component of drilling mud that makes chemical treatment necessary permits a marked reduction in chemicals. The main uses of the centrifugal process are the treatment of muds while drilling, the reclaiming of discorded muds, cleaning up of workover muds, and the reduction in lime content of mud for completion. INTRODUCTION Drilling mud in any circulatory system is made viscous and difficult to pump by gradual accumulation of drilled solids which pass through the shale shaker and are continually reground. In a weighted mud containing a large proportion of barite by volume, the amount of drilled solids that may be tolerated is greatly reduced. Much effort has been expended to control by chemical treatment the effects of such solids. Though chemical treatment is quite effective, the time eventually comes at deeper depths after enough drilled solids have entered the system when a portion of the mud must be discarded and replaced with water and more weighting material. Once begun, this process is generally continued at frequent intervals with resultant high maintenance costs. At the termination of drilling, mud highly contaminated with light solids and spent chemicals is poorly suited for completion operations.' It is likewise limited in utility for other drilling operations. This investigation was conducted for the primary purpose of determining an acceptable mechanical means of removing the lightweight solids from weighted drilling muds in order to maintain viscosity at a minimum. A decanting type of centrifuge was selected from the various possible methods of mechanical separation. The centrifugal process has been employed in this country for this purpose in central mud reclamation systems in California in earlier years. It also was used for treatment of weighted muds on the Gulf Coast.' In more recent years only sporadic attempts have been made to employ it in the field on weighted muds. DISCUSSION OF PROCESS Selection of Apparatus Two factors favor mechanical procedure for the separation and removal of drilled solids or clays from the mud circulatory system. First, the greater specific gravity, 4.1 to 4.3, of the barite would promote more rapid settling than the clays whose specific gravity range is from 2.5 to 2.7. Second, the relative coarseness of the barite particles also facilitate faster settling of this phase. A decanting type of centrifuge was preferred for this process over other possible methods for these reasons: 1. Requires no costly additives or excess dilution. 2. Centrifugal force affords greatly accelerated separation as compared to gravity.

THE man who forgot to mail the letters his wife gave him was for once justified at Tulsa, for envelopes, scratch paper and tablecloths were all in demand and through the two days of the meeting of the Petroleum Division, pencils were busy everywhere sketching out diagrams, drawing curves, figuring, or just taking notes. Those attending took the serious papers seriously, and discussion was wide-ranging but pointed. Despite the highly technical character of the papers presented, the chairmen had never to call for discussion; it was only necessary to say the paper was open for it. Both days the meetings lasted until after five in the afternoon, and it was enthusiastically voted to advance the meeting hour on Friday, in order to give more time. In all, ten papers, abstracts of which appeared in MINING AND METALLURGY for October, and copies of all but two of which were available in print, were presented in the two days, and no more could have been handled to advantage in that time. All but one of these dealt with problems of production engineering. That, the opening paper, was a general review of demand, supply and price in 1928, by Campbell Osborn, in which he argued for the price control of production and showed how the economic conditions determined development. J. Elmer Thomas presented a carefully prepared review of the same data, but came to somewhat different conclusions as to trend, and J. E. Pogue pointed out that in recent years it has been the manufacturing rather than the producing industries that have been notably profitable. Arsenical gold ores occur in many parts of the world, including numerous mines in Canada and the western United States. Free gold is often finely disseminated in the grains of sulfide minerals, arsenopyrite, pyrite, orpiment and realgar. Generally a sulfide concentrate is produced by flotation. Arsenical ores or concentrates are not amenable to direct cyanidation and therefore are considered refractory. A wide variety of roasting equipment and conditions have been used by the mills to remove arsenic and sulfur from these concentrates. The resulting calcine is easy to cyanide and gold is recovered from the cyanide solution by zinc dust cementation. Room-temperature potential-pH diagrams and high-temperature phasestability diagrams are presented to discuss the chemistry of the gold cyanidation, cementation, and roasting steps in the presence of arsenic. The environmental aspects of arsenic discharge are also included.
