To contact the commercial OPAP-kerosene solution with CH3OH – H20 solution, we used the appropriate concentration of DOPAP / MOPAP solvent. By using this treated OPAP solvent, uranium can be recovered from wet-process phosphoric acid. Electric DC power is supplied on the dual side of the ion-exchange membrane of a specially designed box-type mixer settler. U(VI) is reduced to U(IV) in the cathode and U(IV) is oxidized to U(VI) in the anode. Uranium is extracted in the cathode by treating it with OPAP solvent. Next the uranium is stripped from the loaded OPAP solvent by concentrated phosphoric acid in the anode. After 300 hours of continuous operation total recovery of uranium is as much as 95%.

The possibility of using unidirectionally solidified, two-phase alloys as an approximation to fiber composite materials is investigated. The short-term me.chanical properties and failure modes of unidirectionully solidified A1 (rich)-Cu alloys containing ap -Proximately 0, 17.5, and 27.7 vol pct of 0 phase 'fibers" are determined at temperatures from 25" to 500" and compared with those obtained for conventionul SAP alloys. In a previous publication,' hereafter referred to as I, the possibility of understanding some of the room-temperature mechanical properties of unidirectionally solidified castings was explored. For Al(rich)-Cu and Al(rich)-Mg two-phase alloys over a substantial range of compositions, the yield and ultimate strengths and common ductility measures were very adequately predicted from the principles of fiber strengthening4 and the analysis of ductility outlined by Gurland and Plateau." The results obtained in I suggest the possibility of using unidirectionally solidified, two-phase alloys to simulate fiber composite materials where the inter-dendritic second phase or constituent acts as the reinforcing material. Recent attempts concerning the fabrication of fiber conlposites have concentrated on producing composites with a good bond between fiber and matrix and with very long fibers so that their maximum contribution to the strength of the composite may be realized. However, these objectives are difficult to attain in practice and present fabrication processes are either extremely laborious or costly.13 The slow, unidirectional solidification of eutectics has received considerable attention as a method for producing composite materials. 5,6 This method can fulfill both of the above objectives but it is currently laborious, expensive, and has the additional disadvantage that the volume fraction of reinforcing phase cannot be easily varied. On the other hand, unidirectionally solidified, two-phase alloys, also with a good bond between the phases, are relatively easy to make and the volume fraction of reinforcing "fibers" can be easily varied by changing the average composition of the alloy. The disadvantage of the cast alloys is that the mechanical effectiveness of the "elongated interdendritic reinforcements" (EIR)* may be reduced due to their rela- tively short lengths, the w factor in Eq. [2] of I. However, if the EIR have a high strength their contribution can be considerable. For composite materials containing discontinuous cylindrical fibers of various lengths the ultimate strength is given by1 where it is assumed that the composite fractures when the fibers fail. In Eq. [I], a, is the stress in the matrix just prior to failure of the composite, Vf is the total volume fraction of fiber reinforcing constituent, Vf(l+) is the volume fraction of fibers whose lengths exceed the critical length, I,, which is defined as the shortest length of fiber in which the stress can build up sufficiently to break the fiber. af is the fracture strength of the fiber material, w is a factor accounting for the discontinuity of those fibers whose lengths exceed I,, 1-/d is the average aspect ratio of those fibers whose lengths are shorter than I,, and t is the shear stress in the matrix at the fiber-matrix interface. The factor w is dependent on the length of the fibers and also on whether deformation of the matrix occurs plastically or elastically. However, for a given length of fiber, w is smaller when elastic deformation of the matrix is assumed.' It is of interest to consider the properties of simple unidirectionally solidified, two-phase alloys at elevated temperatures in view of the possibility of using suitable modifications for high temperature service. Knowledge of the creep behavior of these materials is still rudimentary (although under active investigation) and the present paper concerns itself with short time tensile properties of some alloys similar to those investigated in I (i.e., unidirectionally solidified Al(rich)-Cu alloys). Unidirectionally solidified alloys containing 5.6, 17, and 23 wt pct Cu were tested parallel to the direction of solidification at temperatures from 25" to 500°C. In the present investigation, the alloys were homogenized for 2 days at 535°C giving a matrix of homogeneous a phase (5.2 wt pct Cu) and an interdendritic constituent (EIR) which was completely Q phase (53 wt pct Cu). EXPERIMENTAL Alloys of nominal composition 5.6, 17, and 23 wt pct Cu (containing approximately 0, 17.5, and 27.7 vol pct 8 phase, respectively, after homogenization at 535°C) were prepared by melting 1200 g of A1 (99.99 pct) in a high purity graphite crucible and adding the appropriate amount of freshly cleaned copper chips (99.9 pct). The molten alloy (at 700°C) was poured into a preheated graphite mold (also at 700°C) and the ingot unidirectionally solidified by impinging water on the steel baseplate of the mold. The year 1932 has been one of exceptional significance for the Gulf Coast. Because of many new oil fields found, the most outstanding of which, Conroe, has assumed national importance, and because of new prospective areas extending through Montgomery, Polk, Tyler and Newton counties into Louisiana, there has been a stampede of operators to the Coast. During the year, development and discoveries have shown a marked trend away from the shallow or intermediate depth type of salt dome fields, with their treacherous flanking sands, to the deep-seated type of domes with their more continuous blanketing sands. The potency of some of the deep-seated domes such as Thompsons and Conroe, in Texas, and Iowa in Louisiana, has for the time at least, dispelled the disappointment of such deep-seated domes as Mykawa or Sheppard's Mott. Whether the newer deep-seated prospects, as yet little developed, will prove Conroes or Mykawas remains to be seen. In any event there is much for us yet to learn of the Coast. During 1932 a total of nine new oil fields and four new gas areas were discovered, which compares with seven new fields in 1931 and three fields in 1930. Of the nine new oil fields two were in Coastal Louisiana. This is the largest number of new oil fields found on the Coast in a single year since 1929, when 11 new fields were discovered. Not only because of the number of new fields has 1932 been notable but also because these new fields represent new productive areas that total 16,000 acres or more, or over 70 per cent of the total productive area known on the entire Coast at the beginning of 1932. In addition to the fields discovered in 1932, four new areas, or extensions around domes or fields already producing, and at least 11 new oil sands and three new gas sands have come to light. We may well say that 1932 has been the banner year for the Gulf Coast, in spite of depressed economic conditions and continued and more emphatic restriction of production. With the exception of 1901, when oil was discovered on the Coast and 1924, the year in which geophysical prospecting was in:lugurated, 1932 has been its most outstanding year.

As the radical element has secured control of the various local printers' unions of New- York City, 250 magazines have temporarily suspended publication rather than grant their demands. The actions of. these local unions have been repudiated by the officers of the different inter-national unions, who are seeking in every way to carry out their agree-ments with the publishers. The charters of the local pressmen's and feeders' unions have been revoked by the international officers and new local unions are being formed. Members of the typographical union are not, as yet, directly affected by the strike, but many of them are taking "vacations," which accomplishes the same purpose as the strike but without the odium. The Engineering and Mining Journal, with true engineering spirit refusing to admit insuperable obstacles, is sending out a two-page printed market bulletin, together with two typewritten pages, making an an-nouncement of its predicament and giving brief items of mining news. Thus s brought home to the members of the mining profession in a very direct way the pernicious results of unrestrained control of labor organi-zations-by foreign and un-American elements. No sermon on this sub-ject is required, as the facts themselves are sufficiently eloquent.

THE CHAIRMAN (B. B. GOTTSBERGER, Miami, Ariz.).-On your trip today through the Inspiration and Miami mills you have seen in actual operation the machines which represent the changes adopted in grinding methods in the Miami district from the beginning of operations in March, 1911. In one section of the Miami plant are three Chilean mills not yet discarded, representing the first machines adopted. In another section, pebble grinding is still in operation, while in the balance of the plant, pebbles have been replaced with iron balls. In all cases these machines are handling a feed which is the product of roll, grinding down to about ¼ in. in, size. The latest step in grinding in the district, You saw at the Inspiration plant, where in Marcy mills a filed, the larger pieces of which remain on a 2-in. opening, is being reduced in one operation to a product of which only about 3 per. cent. remains on the 48-mesh screen. A detailed comparison of the methods used at the two plants would be very instructive but our own work at Miami has not yet reached a point where such a comparison is possible, the reason being that our final product is not yet fine enough. By means of larger Hardinge mills operating in closed circuit with Dorr classifiers soon to, be installed in one section of the plant, we hope to obtain, under properly balanced operating conditions the same end result as at Inspiration. It, might interest you, however, to know some of the results we have obtained here by the substitution of balls for pebbles. With pebble grinding, using three 8-ft. by 22-in. mills, followed by one 8-ft. by 66-in. mill for regrinding the coarse product of the primary mills, we handled 636 tons per 24 hr. in one section of the plant. Substituting balls for pebbles in the first operation and using two mills in place of three we obtained a tonnage of .714 tons to the section. With the use of balls both in the primary mills and in the regrinding mills, the tonnage for one section was raised to 822 tons per day. Coincident with this increase in tonnage, we also obtained a greater efficiency. The use of pebbles in all mills showed 21.5 per cent. plus 48-mesh material in the final tailing, which figure was reduced to 13.9 per cent. for balls followed by pebbles, and to 4.6 per cent. with the use of balls both in the primary and regrinding mills.

INTRODUCTION Studies relating to the Oakville aquifer as presented in this report and by Henry et al. (this volume), are part of a larger , comprehensive examination of regional and local stratigraphic, hydro- geologic, and geochemical parameters within the Oakville Formation recently completed by the Bureau of Economic Geology. The Oakville serves both as a major Gulf Coast aquifer and an important uranium host (Fig. 1). Regional and local controls on hydrodynamics and hydrochemistry have important implications for hydrochemical exploration, the establishment of premining baseline parameters, and the design of post mining restoration procedures. Investigations of the Oakville Formation were de- signed for the purpose of determining the response of the aquifer to uranium extraction and were funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency under grant numbers R-805357-01 and R-805357-02. Physical Stratigraphy Physical stratigraphic analysis shows that the Oakville Sandstone, a lithostratigraphic unit deposited by a major coastal-plain f luvial system, consists of five mappable, component depositional elements (Figs. 2 and 3). Each major component element is the product of one or more rivers traversing the Miocene coastal plain. In turn, each river possessed a unique sediment load, discharge characteristics, and source terrane. Consequently, each element exhibits distinguishing geometric and compositional parameters that potentially influence the flux and hydrochemical evolution of contained ground waters (Galloway, Henry, and Smith, in preparation). The Oakvil le Sandstone, as mapped and interpreted as a lithostratigraphic unit in the study area, corresponds closely to the Jasper aquifer system, an equally well-defined Gulf Coastal Plain hydrogeologic unit (Baker, 1978). Principal surrounding hydrogeologic units include the underlying Catahoula confining system, the Jasper aquifer system itself, and the overlying Burkeville confining system (lower Fleming mudstones). The Evangeline aquifer system includes much of the Fleming Formation. The Jasper aquifer system is bounded above and below by relatively less transmissive, finer grained confining systems, although absolute transmissivity varies greatly within both the Jasper and confining units. Lithostratigraphic and hydrogeologic boundaries coincide almost exactly within the Hebbronville flu- vial axis (Fig. 3). Correspondence of geologic and hydrostratigraphic boundaries is good within the George West axis; farther to the northeast the correlation of the Jasper aquifer with units mapped as Oakville Formation diverges to varying degrees. A complete analysis of these trends and a study of the depositional facies comprising the Oakvillle are included in Galloway, Henry, and Smith (in preparation). REGIONAL HYDROGEOLOGY The stratigraphic, compositional, and structural framework of the Oakville Formation and the mosaic of interrelated depositional facies that are combined in this framework play a key role in defining the hydrogeology of the Oakville. Furthermore, a combination of climate and hydrogeology, as well as past and present socioeconomic conditions, has determined water and land use patterns within the region of Oakville outcrop. Utilization of Oakville Ground Water Stratigraphic control for determining which wells produce ground water from the Oakville aquifer was established by preparing structural and isopach maps of the Oakville Formation using regional electric log cross sections. Surface elevation and screened interval data (or total well depth, if open-hole completion techniques were used) from each water well, combined with the stratigraphic data, allowed accurate assessment of the producing aquifer for individual wells. A diaphragm diffusion cell suitable for use with liquid metals was designed and tested by measuring the diffusion coefficients for a Hg-10 pct In alloy at 25°C. The binary diffusion coefficient and the coefficients for In and Hg tracers were measured at this composition. The measured coefficients for both tracers were less than the binary diffusion coefficient. When these coefficients were combined with the activity correction term of Darken, the predicted binary coefficient was somewhat higher than the experimental value. In recent years a number of investigators have been studying diffusion of liquid metals in order to gain a better understanding of the liquid state and to examine possible applications to liquid metal processing. The bulk of this work has involved either self-diffusion or diffusion of low concentrations of solute metals in an essentially pure solvent metal. The most common experimental technique employed has been the capillary-reservoir method of Anderson and saddington1 since it is well-suited to measurements involving low concentrations of solutes. As an expansion of previous studies, an investigation of the variation of diffusion coefficient over large composition ranges has been undertaken in this laboratory. Although it is possible to modify the capillary-reservoir method for such measurements, the technique loses its principal advantage of requiring only small quantities of solutes. Therefore, it was felt desirable to investigate other possible experimental techniques applicable to measurements over large composition ranges. A technique which has been used widely in measurements of other liquid systems and seemed potentially applicable to studies of liquid metals was the diaphragm cell. This method has been found to combine relative simplicity of operation with accurate and reproducible results. In use with normal liquids, the tyiical diaphragm cell utilizes a porous glass disk. However, because of the high surface tension, it is not possible to use a diaphragm of such fine pore structure with liquid metals. Furthermore. projected use at high temperatures makes the use of glass undesirable. Consequently, the first problem was the search for an appropriate cell design. EXPERLMENTAL Diaphragm Cell. A number of possible cell designs were examined. Prototypes of several were constructed and tested. The final design is shown in an exploded view in Fig. 1. The cell consists of two identical chambers, one on either side of a 0.20-in.-thick partition. The chambers are 0.15 in. deep and have a volume of 3.45 cu cm. Each chamber is provided with two small threaded holes for filling and emptying. The filling holes may be sealed with stainless-steel screws. Drilled lengthwise through the center partition is a 0.250-in.-diam hole. Inserted into this hole is a rod having seven 0.059-in.-diam holes drilled radially through it. The total "hole" volume is 0.078 cu cm. When the rod is properly aligned, the holes in it constitute the "diaphragm" through which diffusion occurs. The center section was of Teflon and the rod and face plates were of Plexiglas. Four such cells were constructed and used in this study. Subsequent to this investigation, a similar cell constructed entirely of iron was fabricated and tested at higher temperatures. Several considerations led to this final design. It is desirable to minimize the volume of the cell chambers to decrease the time required for a measurement. However, the total volume of metal in the diaphragm must be small in comparison with that in the chambers. To facilitate filling and emptying it is desirable to have a diaphragm which may be closed.

One of the chief difficulties with which the operator of a coal washing plant has been forced to contend is the handling of the very fine coal. First he has the problem of separating the fine coal from washery water. This is usually accomplished by the use of settling cones or Dorr thickeners: in either event the separated fine coal contains a high amount (40 to 80 pct) of water and, somewhat loosely, dependent upon the size of the coal particles present, may be known as sludge or slurry. His second problem is the satisfactory further dewatering of such separated sludge and/or slurry. At the coal washing plant of the Colorado Fuel and Iron Corp., washed coal from the Deister Plat-O tables is sluiced to a stationary inclined de-watering screen provided with 3/16 by 1-in. slots, and the coarse coal passing over this screen is conveyed by a Baum-type elevator and a flight-type distributing conveyor to a battery of Carpenter centrifugal driers. The fine coal and water passing through the openings of the primary dewatering screens, plus the fine coal passing through the screens of the centrifugal driers (and no small portion of which is the result of the disintegrating action of these driers) is pumped to two 30-ft Link Belt settling cones. The sludge recovered as underflow from these cones was formerly dewatered on stationary screens having 1/16 by 1-in. slots and discharged on top of the coarse washed coal in the Baum drainage conveyor; but after a relatively few hours of op eration the circulating load of fine coal on this conveyor built up to a point where it became necessary to reduce the quantity of feed to the washing tables. The original arrangement of our coal washing and dewatering equipment is shown in Fig 1. In order to regain the loss in active throughput which had been caused by this circulating load, an installation of six vibrating filters was made during the year of 1936. This resulted in an increase in normal tonnage of washed coal from 1430 to 1750 tons per 8-hr shift, a gain of slightly over 22 pct. This increase in throughput has made a very substantial decrease in the " conversion cost" per ton of washed coal. Since the vibrators were installed, we have gained about 2,000,000 tons in production, compared to what would have been produced in the same number of shifts at the former rate. Putting it in slightly different form, we have saved in the past 12 yr the cost of 1400 operating shifts in the washery. Fig 2 shows the location of the vibrating filters as applied to the original flowsheet. It will be noted that the sludge from the bottom of the settling cones is passed through a distributing box and thence to the filters. The de-watered coal from the filters is de-livered to the conveyor receiving the dried coal from the Carpenter driers.

With the imperfect knowledge that me have of the geology .of the country in general, and of the numerous mining districts in particular, it is impossible to present an accurate idea of the geographical and geological distribution of the mineral deposits of the Mexican Republic. But, notwithstanding this, it is elear that the deposits are concentrated in limited regions of the country, and that certain deposits are so closely associated as to indicate, beyond doubt, a genetic relationship. The mineral deposits are numerous, and the most of them are found in the western part of the country in a zone following a SE.-NW. direction from Oaxaca to Sonora. In the eastern

IN the practice of ore finding the geologist is continually confronted with the question of oreshoot extension, so that the general problem seems worthy of systematic investigation. This problem appears when the reserves are estimated and when the advisability of deepening the shaft comes up. Moreover, there is need for lower development cost to keep pace with cost reductions in other departments, or even to offset a rising cost of ore finding or ore following. This can be gained by close geologic control of the development; and much of the geology involved is that bearing on the downward, upward, and horizontal extensions of shoots. Furthermore, the purchase of a mine or prospect often depends directly on the question of shoot extension; because it is seldom that the ore is fully developed and the purchase price is almost invariably based largely on "possible" and geologically prospective ore. Most current methods for estimating '(possible" and the more nebulous classes of ore are crude and indecisive. In the following pages the extension of oreshoots is the major theme, although the more basic subject, the general art of ore finding, is given some space. (A) Direct Methods of Extension Prediction (I) Extrapolation and Interpolation of Shoots by Use of Conventional Geologic and Assay Plans, Projections and Cross-sections There is little need for stressing the desirability of detailed geologic plans, assay plans, projections, and cross-sections as a basis for the study and extension prediction of shoots. Underground and surface mapping, in most cases, ought to be done in exhaustive detail. All features of obvious bearing should be mapped and it is good practice to record all possible details, some of which may become significant when studied in the ensemble. It should be emphasized that the mapping should be done with an impartial mind, with interpretation reduced to the minimum. The symbols of the map can be made to distinguish observed facts from interpretation.

Tmzsile tests were performed on Armco iron samples, at various ternpe.ralures and strain rates, ocer a wide range of grain sizes. Analysis of the data suggests that the plot of the lower yield stress, against d-1/2,where 2d is the acerage grain diameter, is not linear (as is often assumed) but is concave toward the d. axis over the range of d-from 7 to 53 . The different values of the parameters obtained by other workers can be explained, in part at least, by the observed curvature. This curvalure is shown to be consistent with a model of yielding based on dislocation pile-ups; however, the values of obtained by fitting our data to this model differ appreciably from the values generally reported. The equation proposed by Cottrell, viz.: is a plausible empirical fit to the experimental results. The purpose of this paper is to comment on the validity of the widely used linear relationship first proposed by all' and Petch and coworkers2"4 between ay, the lower yield stress, and 2d, the average grain diameter, for bcc metals, viz.: Many workers, see Refs. 2 to 7 and Table 11, have fitted this equation to their experimental results and have obtained acceptable fits over the relatively narrow range of grain sizes used by most of them. Indeed, in some cases, so few data points were available that any more sophisticated fit would have been irrational. In most of the interpretations,'-' oi is thought to be a measure of the friction stress accompanying dislocation movement, and ky was originally inter- preted as a measure of the dislocation locking but is now believed by Cottrell" to be a function of the dislocation creation rate. In the "unpinning" theories, k, is equated to where od is the unpinning stress and 1 is the average distance from the boundary of the grain where yielding is taking place to the nearest dislocation source in an unyielded grain. Other considerations (see, for example, Refs. 11 and 12) lead to equations with a similar form to [I] where different meanings may be attributed to the parameters. While there are doubts as to the physical significance of the parameters i and k, they continue to be used by many workers; interpretations of the variations in the behavior of ferrite materials following certain treatments, e.g., aging,'3 neutron irradiation,14 have been given frequently in terms of these parameters. Some theories of the mechanical behavior of bcc metals are based on this relationship. We have investigated experimentally the oy - d-'lZ relationship for Armco iron over a wider range of grain sizes and with more data points than those given in published results. The analysis of our data suggests that the oy—d-'" relationship is not linear but is in fact concave towards the d-'I2 axis. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The experimental work was carried out on 3-mm-diam Armco iron rods which were prepared by wire drawing from 5-mm-diam rods. By annealing in vacuum at temperatures between 7000 and 1200°C for various times, grain sizes from 7 to 20,000 grains per sq mm were obtained, the grains in all cases being regularly shaped. Grain sizes were measured by lineal interceptand by area methods; only specimens with Amax/A values of 3 to 6 were used in the Petch-Hall plots (where A is the average area of a grain and Amax is the area of the largest grain observed). For all the specimens used, the number of grains in a cross section exceeded 50, which should be adequate to avoid grain size effects.'= Tensile tests were performed at 296", 219, and 17l°K, using

The axis of the middle portion of the Ural mountains is made up chiefly of highly compressed igneous and sedimentary schists, considered of Devonian age by the Russian geologists, with large areas of serpentine (peridotite originally) gabbro, etc,, intrusive in the schist series. In addition there are large areas of probably older granitic and gneissic rocks. The nickel deposits referred to in this paper are found in the Devonian schists and their associated igneous rocks. The gabbro-peridotite intrusions probably took place in late Devonian or early Permian time, inasmueh as the Permian and Carboniferous beds lie at gentle angles on the Devonian series on the west slope of the Urals. Perhaps the first attempt to work a nickel deposit in the Urals was made about 1866 in the Revdinsk district, which is situated southwest of Ekaterinburg. 3 was informed by a Russian that a wet method of extracting the nickel was tried but was not a commercial success. This deposit has been described by Muller,l Foullon, and Karpinski.3 Beck4 gives an abstract of these papers. ; Lying to the southeast of the Revdinsk district, the Sissert estate intervening, is the Verkhne-Ufalei district, which is traversed by the railroad from Ekaterinburg to Cheliabinsk, as shown on the map, Fig. 1, there being a station on this railroad at the iron-smelting town of Verkhne-Ufalci. About 7 versts (4.6 miles) north of this town is the Nijni-Karka-dinsk iron mine, which is a limonite deposit. In one of the shafts in this mine a serpentine rock showing a green mineral was encountered. A sample of this mineral collected in 1910 was tested by Mr. Wyatt, chief chemist of the Karabash laboratory of the Kyshtim Mining Works, and determined as nickel ore. THE " Munroe effect" of shaped explosive charges was discovered by Charles E. Munroe more than 50 years ago (in 1888), but it was not until World War II that it was put to any practical use. Both Allied and Axis armies used the principle effectively in bazooka projectiles, artillery projectiles and in fixed shaped charges. The first two were used primarily to combat tanks and other armor and the latter to assault pillboxes and other fixed concrete emplacements. Many engineers and others who saw the military application of the jet effect of shaped charges believed application would be possible in many industrial fields where blasting is used, such as mining and quarrying. Some work has already been done on the problem of making shaped charges applicable to mining operations. Experimentation conducted at the National Tunnel and Mines' was directed primarily along the lines of use of shaped charges for secondary blasting in connection with long-hole stoping methods. Experimentation initiated earlier and conducted by the author2 at the University of Utah on a more scientific basis was directed at revealing the basic principles of the functioning of shaped charges, as well as the feasibility of using them in mining operations after the principles of their operation had been clearly defined. It was found that: (I) a given design of charge required an optimum standoff to make it most effective, either in penetrating solid rock or steel (see Fig 3); (2) for a given design of charge there exists an optimum ratio of charge diameter to charge height above which the increase in effectiveness of the charge decreases rapidly (see Figs 4 and 5); (3) partial confinement has the effect of making charge performance much more consistent; (4) the higher power and higher velocity explosives tested are much more effective than relatively low-strength explosives; and (5) shaped charges may be adaptable to mining operations in secondary breakage and drilling blasting holes. Fig I is a diagrammatic sketch of the action of a shaped charge for two types of cavities, while Fig 2 shows the approximate manner in which the jets are believed to be formed when an explosive wave encounters the cavity, approaching it from the top. The experimentation already completed has laid the foundation for further research in the study of shaped charges. The velocity and attenuation of elastic waves in sandstones were measured as a function of both pressure and fluid saturation. A large change occurs in these quantities if water is added and the rock is not compressed, but the change is small if the rock is subjected to a large overburden pressure. Measurements were made by vibrating cylindrical samples in both the extensional and torsional modes at frequencies up to 30,000 cycles/sec. Formulas were derived which enable the attenuation of dilatational waves in dry rocks to be deduced from the data. Similar experimental methods were used to investigate the properties of unconsolidated sands. Velocities were found to vary with the 1/4 power of the overburden pressure and attenuations to decrease with the 1/6 power. The effects of grain size, amplitude and fluid saturation were studied. Formulas by which the effects produced by a jacket around the sample may be calculated were derived. The practical application of these results to formation valuation is discussed. INTRODUCTION The attenuation of elastic waves in the earth has been of interest to the seismologist and geophysicist for many years, but only recently to the petroleum engineer. Engineering interest has been brought about by the success of velocity logging devices, for it is possible by modification of these instruments to measure the attenuation of sound waves in addition to their velocity and, hence, deduce the mobility of formation fluids as well as the porosities of the rocks which contain them. The main problem is to decide whether field measurements can be made with sufficient accuracy to be of practical use. This problem can only be solved after we know the magnitude of the attenuations which are typical of the earth at various depths. The logarithmic decrement of a fluid-saturated rock is the sum of a "sloshing" decrement and a "jostling" decrement, the former caused by the mobility of the fluid contained within the rock and the latter by the granular framework of the rock. Sloshing decrements can be calculated' using Biot's theory, but the jostling losses are less well understood. The present paper reports an experimental investigation of jostling losses in consolidated and uncon- solidated sands, particularly with respect to the effect of overburden pressure and fluid saturation. Born' showed that the decrement of a sandstone may increase dramatically when only a few per cent by weight of distilled water is added, and that the additional loss is proportional to the frequency of vibration. His measurements were made with no compressive stress on the framework of the rock. M. Gondouin3 investigated similar phenomena for fluid-saturated plasters but also did not compress the samples. In the present paper it is shown that compression of the framework reduces this effect, so that at depth the jostling decrement of a sandstone may be expected to be almost independent of fluid saturation and frequency. Decrements for many sedimentary rocks have been given by Volarovich,4 but all for the state of zero overburden pressure. Anomalously low velocities have been logged in shallow unconsolidated gas sands. Results of the present investigation confirm that these velocities are not caused by correspondingly high attenuations, because the jostling decrement in a packing of sand grains is small and much less than in a consolidated sandstone at the same depth. Velocities in sands have been measured by Tsareva5 and by Hardin6 as a function of pressure, but the corresponding decrements do not appear to have been measured previously. The widely used "resonant bar method" of measuring velocities and decrements was employed. Comments on variations of this technique have recently been published by McSkimmin.7 The main novelty of the present technique was the application of pressure to the samples. It was found possible to do this by placing the apparatus inside a pressure vessel, provided the conditions leading to large additional losses were avoided. These conditions are discussed below. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE Cylindrical samples were caused to vibrate in both the extensional and torsional mode of vibration and the amplitude of vibration was measured as a function of frequency in the neighborhood of a resonant frequency. The resonant frequency, fr, is related to the corresponding elastic modulus by the formulas where E and N are Young's modulus and the modulus of rigidity, p is the density of the sample, and A the wavelength of the vibration.

It was found that a critical boron content exists which yields the maximum boron-hardenability effect in hypoeutectoid steels, as was predicted from the mechanism proposed in a previous paper. The hardenability of boron steels with boron contents between 0.00005 and 0.0017 pct was dependent on the boron content, austenitizing temperature, quenching temperature, and austenite grain size. The effects of these variables on hardenability can be explained by the mechanism previously proposed for the boron effect. A MECHANISM has been proposed to explain the effect of boron on the hardenability of steel.' As the title indicates, this paper treats of the degree of liberation of minerals after grinding. To obtain the supporting data a "tool" not commonly used by metallurgists has been employed. It is the "heavy solution." The advantages gained through its use are shown. Actual ores were employed in order to make the study concrete. The selection was somewhat incidental and happened to embrace the red iron ores of Alabama. So, any reader interested in these ores will find some of their properties described. The red ores constituted the material examined and a somewhat new adaptation of heavy solutions was the tool of examination. If either the ores or the tool interest the reader these notes may be of some value. The writer's chief interest was in the rate of liberation of locked grains. Ores are generally ground preparatory to concentration and as long as the concentrators make suitable products the effectiveness of the grinding is likely to be unquestioned. But when suitable products are difficult to make, an investigation becomes imperative. In such a case a dissection of the ore might be made to find the cause of the trouble. Such a condition of unsuitable products exists in the low-grade red iron ores of Alabama. They are difficult to concentrate. To be sure it might be said that the concentration of iron ores is a new thing and that the ore-dressing methods are undeveloped, but a glance at the industry reveals an abundance of methods and devices for almost all imaginable conditions. Concentrating machinery has not taken a part in this investigation; the use of it would have been only machinery testing, and should never precede the ore testing which consists of such methods as herein outlined. When the properties of the ores have been gleaned the machinery may be used more effectively.

Kiln Products commissioned a Waelz kiln 4 metres in diameter by 75 metres long, in South West Africa in March, 1969, to recover nine in a form suitable for the production of electrolytic zinc. The raw material consists of a mixture of zinc silicate concentrates and zinc rich tailings purchased from an adjacent zinc mine - the mixture containing 20% to 25% zinc. The chemical composition of the ore is tabulated and the initial test results are described. Due to the comparatively low temperature at which the ore starts softening the kiln has certain unusual features to enable the temperature to be controlled within the necessary limits. A detailed description of the kiln, the starting-up problems and present operating conditions and results are presented.

To the successful functioning of the geomagnetic method of exploration in engineering and geological practice there are two prime prerequisites : the measurability and the interpretability of significant magnetic anomalies. A magnetic anomaly may be defined as a permanent distortion of the earth's magnetic field, in order to distinguish it frog the distortions, either cyclic or irregular, which vary with time. So far as known, time fluctations have no directly assignable geologic significance in terms of rock formations, while anomalies may be considered to be directly caused by the difference in the magnetic properties within and between the formations of the substances that make up the earth's outer shell. As is effectively pointed out by L. B. Slichter,1 the effects which these differences produce on the magnetic field may be extremely minute or extremely great, depending upon the magnetic properties of the formations. Thus the actual anomalies may range from the infinitesimal to a magnitude considerably greater than that of the earth's field. The geomagnetic method of exploration has shared in the deluge of experimental effort which has lately swept geophysical prospecting to its present important place in engineering and geologic practice. But to date more of this effort has been expended upon the measurability of anomalies than upon their interpretability. The tendency has been to strive for the development of instruments and especially field techniques capable of measuring minute anomalies with a precision far beyond that for which there can be any hope of adequate interpretation other than as interesting phenomena having numerous possible causes. Such efforts, of course, are highly commendable in the field of so-called pure science, which includes the accumulation of undigested detailed observations and admits of interpretation by multiple hypotheses, but in engineering practice the factor of economy must enter. Those instruments and techniques are most desirable which can most rapidly measure the interpretable range of anomalies with the precision necessary

THE consensus of opinion in the published literature on. Grecian magnesite is that it has been formed by alteration of the serpentine, which in turn was itself a product, of metamorphism from the original olivine intrusion. The general opinion seems to be that the magnesite was formed by descending waters heavily charged with CO2. Inasmuch as this opinion is held by engineers far better qualified than I to speak authoritatively on this subject, I hesitate to dispute that theory. However, certain occurrences coming under my observation do not, to me at least, seem to-entirely substantiate this theory. LOCATION Most of the Grecian magnesite comes from the Island of Euboea, although more recently some deposits have been opened on the mainland near the City of Saloniki, which prior to the war was Turkish. The island, comprising a state or province in the Greek political structure, is roughly 110 miles long and varies from 10 to 30 miles in width. It lies off the east coast of the Greek peninsula in the AEgean Sea with its long axis extending in a northwest-southeast direction. It is separated from the mainland by a long narrow arm of the sea known as the Atalanti Canal. Chalkis (Halkis), the capital on the west coast of the island, is the northern terminus of a branch of the state-owned railway and is connected with the mainland by a single-span, movable, highway bridge, roughly 150 ft. long.
