An investigation of the relationship between properties of the elements and type of binary diagram formed was conducted. It was found that, for each type of equilibrium diagram, the factors for the size, valence, electronegativity, period, melting point, entropies of fusion, and sublimation calculated for each pair of elements cover a range of values. However, these factors show sufficient relationship to the equilibrium diagram so that the correlation of several of them can be used to predict the type of diagram formed, or at least limit the choice to only a few types. ThE goal of the metallurgist concerned with alloy development has always been to find a method that predicts the properties that can be obtained when a certain metal is added to another one. In most cases a qualitative predictiton of properties can be made if the equilibrium diagram is known. However, this means that for new metals the alloy development has to start with the experimental determination of the equilibrium diagrams. Because this determination is at least as complicated and time-consuming as the determination of the properties themselves, most alloy development has taken place by trial and error, and the study of the equilibrium diagrams has followed rather than preceded the creation of new alloys. Alloy structures and properties depend on the interaction between electrons and a complete knowledge of these interactions would permit prediction of structure and properties of alloys. Unfortunately direct measurement of these interactions is extremely difficult and somewhat doubtful and only properties that depend on them can be measured easily and with certainty. Study of the relationship between properties of the elements and equilibrium diagrams is not new. Besides the well known Hume-Rothery rule of the necessity of an atomic diameter fit within 15 pct for extensive miscibility in the solid, and the wide knowledge of the effect of such factors as size, electronegativity, electron-atom ratio on solid state features,"' work relating to liquid state and liquid-solid reactions can be found in the literature. Orebodies with intricate three- dimensional shapes (such as porphyry molybdenum deposits) are difficult to model using geostatistics or other computer- assisted methods. 'The strong trends in their spatial grade distributions occur as mathematically complex shapes and prevent the customary assumption of local stationarity that is required for accurate ore reserve estimation. "Zoned Kriging", a new method developed by AMAX, solves this problem directly by using the geologist's interpretation of the ore zones as a parameter in the kriging equations. The geological basis and methods used in the Climax ore zoning technique are reviewed and discussed relative to their application in zoned geostatistical modeling. The Zoned Kriging technique is described and demonstrated using data typical of mineral de- posits.

This paper deals with the phenomenon of water held in a leach dump due to capillarity. Water is shown to be retained in the fine pores of the ore as well as in the interstices between the rock and soil particles. Upon drainage, Chino leach dump material shows two distinct capillary systems and a double capillary curve is often obtained. Both the igneous and the sedimentary rocks composing the leach material are shown to have appreciable porosity but little permeability. Fluid flow is, therefore, restricted to the interstices between the rock and soil particles. The irreducible water saturation for the aggregate is found to be 884 for the -48 mesh material and 235 for the448 mesh to one inch material. The composite sample of minus one inch dump material had an irreducible water saturation of 52 percent. The irreducible water saturation in the fine pores of the ore was found to be between 73 and 76 percent. Very coarse pores or channels between large rocks exhibit essentially zero capillary retained water. The presence of fine material in a dump can cause high water saturations to be retained and these saturations may be mistaken for perched water tables. Perched water tables can be drained but capillary water will be retained. Capillary pressure data can aid in distinguishing between perched water tables and capillary retained water.

The Trixie mine is located in the East Tintic Mining District. Since production began in 1970 over 450 000 tonnes of ore grading 239 grams of silver, 6.9 grams of gold, and 1.2% Cu have been mined from veins in Cambrian Tintic Quartzite. Detailed geologic mapping and extensive sampling are essential for compiling the data base required for efficiently developing and mining known reserves as well as planning exploration and development work. Although the basic techniques used by the geology group at the Trixie were developed many years ago, the reduced activity in underground precious metal mining in the U.S. have made these techniques less familiar to many presently active geologists. The increased activity in precious metals search and exploration again offer cause for the application of these techniques as a prerequisite to efficient exploration, development and production.

With drilling costs playing a pivotal role in the economics of most mineral exploration programs, there has been a significant effort over the past decade to trim expenditures in this area. One result of these cost-cutting measures has been the substantial shift to use of rotary drills. By the mid-1970's, rotary drilling accounted for six times as much footage as core drilling in exploration work. Among the various rotary drilling techniques, the use of dual-tube drilling for continuous sampling is attracting growing interest. Factors such as drilling speed and cost advantages, coupled with favorable comparisons between chip samples and solid core samples, have helped to spark this interest.

One of the major difficulties in predicting the performance of oil reservoirs from their early pressure history lies in the uncertainty of estimating the volume of the liquid hydrocarbons contained in them. As a first step in filling this need, an equation was developed to determine the Inolal liquid volume of pure hydrocarbons over a wide range of temperature and pressure. This maximum deviation was that found when comparing the calculated and observed values over a temperature range of 86° to 482°F and a pressure range from the bubbl-point ro 10,000 psis. The equations expressing the correlation for. mixrurrc were developed from 647 experimental measure-rilents of volume on 47 bouom-hole samples covering ; temperature range of 72" to 250°F and a pressure znge from bubble-point ro 5,000 psig. The average absotute deviation was found to he 1.6 per cent with the maximum for any measurement of 4.9 per cent. INTRODUCTION Accuratc information of the pressure-volume-temper-iiture behavior of hydrocarbon liquids is of considerable importance in the field of both applied and theoretical science and, especially, in the solution of petroleum reservoir engineering problems. These PVT relationships can be expressed graphically, in tabular form or as equations of state. Equations of state for gases have been developed based on the ratio of pressure, temperature and volume to the pressure, temperature and volume at the critical points of the hydrocarbons. These equations have been successful in yielding values fairly accurate for reservoir engineering purposes. For liquids, however, relations of this type are more complex and have not yielded useful results. The composition of reservoir liquids is normally expressed in terms of the moles of hydrocarbons C,? C,. C,. elc, per mole of mixture. The composition must include the fraction of a mixture such as C,,, which cannot be separated with reasonable time and effort into specific hydrocarbons. Although there are several equations of state having variable degrees of accuracy applicable to pure liquid hydrocarbons, none includes a means for estimating the volume of mixtures as a function of temperature. pressure and composition expressed in this manner.

AS these annual occasions in honor of Henry Marion Howe continue through the years: there is progressively less likelihood that the lecturer will have had personal knowledge of Dr. Howe. The present speaker is one of those who unfortunately had no opportunity to come under the inspiring presence of this great metallurgist. A review of Howe's work shows it to cover a comprehensive range of interests and to evidence an impressive richness of detail. Not only was Howe at home in the laboratory, but he was familiar with the processes of iron and steel making and had a real understanding of them. His writings include much that is descriptive of processes with a wealth of material that is becoming of increasing historical value. He recorded his studies of the theoretical aspects of processes and published at least two process classifications, one in 1890 that was lengthy and somewhat theoretical, and a second in 1906 that was more of a practical listing. Wide as Howe's field of interest was, it is significant of the circumstances of his time that he gave- little consideration to raw materials or to their effect on iron and steel making processes. In 1933, Waterhouse, Howe lecturer for that year, presented a descriptive summary of the major steel making processes, and in 1946 Joseph discussed the blast furnace process. Otherwise Howe lectures have not dealt with processes as major subjects. In today's lecture, with no effort to describe the mechanical arrangements of iron and steel making facilities, it is proposed to examine the essential technological elements of the processes, to explore the inter-relation of these elements, and particularly to seek recognition and understanding of those factors which determine why certain processes are or are not used. The discussion of this lecture will deal with the major well-known large tonnage processes, with only such attention to processes of minor tonnage and special character as may be warranted for explanation by contrast. Subject to the errors of generalization and the shortcomings of condensation involved in presentation limited to a single hour, it is proposed to examine broadly but intensively those operations which convert raw materials into steel. It is an innovation for a Howe lecturer to discuss the raw materials of the iron and steel industry, but the changing circumstances of passing years intensify the influence of raw materials on processes and require the metallurgist to be alert for the process adjustments that may become advisable or mandatory. For a half century the metallurgical processing of iron and steel has followed a surprisingly straight path, but this does not necessarily mean that there are no curves in the road ahead. MOST of the commercial colored gold alloys for jewelry applications are based on the Au-Ag-Cu-Zn system. Although work has been done on the constitution of the Au-Ag-Cu system.'-4 there are no reports in the literature on the effects of zinc additions in these alloys. We have metallographically determined the a =al + a2 transformation temperatures in 91/2- and 131/2-karat alloys in which varying amounts of zinc have been substituted for copper and silver. Delayed failure in steel occurs by controlled initiation and growth of a crack. The incubation period for crack initiation was measured. Crack initiation and Propagation are controlled by interaction between hydrogen concentration and triaxial stress state. The incubation period results from stress-induced diffusion of hydrogen to the point of crack initiation. THIS paper describes the phenomenon of delayed failureland the kinetics of crack initiation and propagation in uniformly hydrogenated steel. The investigation was prompted by service failures of high-strength-steel components at applied stresses far below the conventional yield strength, after the part had successfully sustained equal or higher stresses for an extended time interval. This delayed failure phenomenon, often termed static fatigue, is associated1 with the presence of hydrogen. This is not surprising, since the voluminous literature on flaking and hydrogen embrit-tlement demonstrates that hydrogen may exert a potent embrittling influence. Flakes, or internal hairline cracks in alloy-steel forgings, are related to the presence of hydrogen retained from the steel-making process.2 On the other hand, embrit-tlement arises from hydrogen introduced during surface treatments such as acid pickling or electroplating. Laboratory delayed failures have been induced in notch specimens of 4340 steel by electrolytic charging of the specimen surface with hydrogen and subsequent static stressing.l,4,5 Static fatigue was observed over a wide range of applied stresses; however, failure did not occur below a critical applied stress, designated as the static fatigue limit. In this instance the extended time for failure resulted primarily from the macroscopic redistribution of hydrogen. A crack formed to the depth of the hydrogen enriched "case* upon loading; further crack growth naturally awaited diffusion of hydrogen into the material ahead of the crack. The crack-propagation rate was therefore controlled primarily by the macroscopic diffusion of hydrogen into the specimen interior during the test. Thus, in this instance static fatigue was associated with the movement of a gross concentration gradient. However, delayed failure in steel of uniform hydrogen concentration is of greater fundamental interest, as well as commercial significance. With a homogeneous hydrogen distribution a different mode of delayed failure might be expected. As the heterogeneous hydrogen distribution became more uniform,4,5 the initial crack-propagation rate decreased markedly and, in fact, what appeared to be an incubation period for crack initiation was observed. However, the macroscopic concentration gradient precluded an accurate evaluation of these observations. Although the existence of an incubation period, up to this time, has not been established definitely, it is not amiss to point out some implications of the concept. It is of interest in all hydrogen-induced embrittlement phenomena, such as flaking, delayed failure, and hydrogen embrittlement. Much discussion has centered around the possibility of an

L. S. Darken—It is indeed gratifying to find that the results of the two different methods here reported are in substantial agreement with each other and with the earlier work1 of two of the authors. Dr. R. P. Smith, of our laboratory, has been conducting some experiments at 1000°C to determine the diffusivity of carbon in austenite by a third method— the steady state method. This work, which will soon be reported, is far enough advanced that we can say it is in substantial agreement with that of the present authors. The only disparity which might be considered significant is in the high-carbon region, where we find that the diffusivity rises a little less steeply than indicated in fig. 8. F. E. Harris—The authors have presented an impressive arrangement of data concerning the diffusion of carbon in austenite. Of particular interest is the compilation, table IV, which is repeated in col. B of table V for direct comparison with values (col. A. table V) from a formulation using a single Q value of 31,000 cal as the activation energy for diffusion. This comparatively simple formulation has been used quite successfully in the practical application of calculating the carbon added (or removed) through the face in carburizing and decarburizing experiments, where the face concentrations are held quite constant for known times and temperatures. Literally hundreds of tests have been so checked where the computed and experimental values have varied by less than 5 pct. For higher temperatures, where proper carburizing data are hard to obtain, the diffusion couple is treated as a decarburization of the high-concentration bar and as a carburization of the low-carbon member. The analysis has been limited to a maximum of 1.40 wt pct carbon. The agreement between cols. A and B in table V may be considered fair, if a liberal viewpoint is taken. The use of a diffusion couple has one serious drawback, in that comparatively small amounts of carbon pass through planes of concentration close to those of the initial high-carbon and low-carbon members, and hence small errors become important. THE history and efficiency of 40-ton capacity dump trucks for surface waste removal at the New Cornelia opencut copper mine, at Ajo, Ariz., are summed up in this paper. Tabulations of truck performance, together with detailed cost figures, prove the value of truck transportation for certain special operations at a large mine. Emphasis is given to the fact that truck transportation not only reduces the haulage costs but also reduces the breaking ground and shovel-loading costs per ton. The New Cornelia opencut copper mine is in the desert. The climate is ideal for seven months of the year, but the five summer months are uncomfortably hot. The elevation is 1820 ft. above sea level and the annual rainfall is approximately 6 inches. The ore body is a monzonite-porphyry deposit. The waste-rock capping consists of hard rhyolite, conglomerate and porphyry. All the material is hard and cannot be excavated without blasting. The rhyolite and conglomerate waste is very blocky. The weight of the rock in place is 2.16 tons per cubic yard. The average mine production per day is 22,000 tons of ore and 18,000 tons of waste rock, the latter consisting of surface rock and material within the ore body too low in grade to send to the concentrator. The rock is loaded by electric shovels with 4 ½ -cu. yd. dippers. The primary transportation of ore to the concentrator and waste to the dumps is by 30-yd. dump cars and oil-burning steam locomotives; therefore truck haulage of waste is a minor factor of the New Cornelia operation. However, as New Cornelia was one of the first mines to use large-capacity dump trucks for haulage, the results obtained are of interest. EQUIPMENT On the south side of the New Cornelia is a hill rising about 500 ft. above the normal surface elevation, roughly 1000 ft. in diameter at its base, called locally Arkansas Mountain peak. Exploratory drilling in this area developed additional ore that could be made accessible for open pit operation only by moving the mountain face a maximum distance of 400 ft. to the south. The slope of the mountain adjacent to the pit averaged 35°, and the small area involved precluded the use of train haulage for the removal of the 4,000,000 tons of waste estimated above the normal pit elevation. A study of dump-truck haulage at Boulder Dam and San Gabriel Dam led to the decision to use large-capacity end-dump trucks rather than smaller trucks, for the following reasons: 1. The truck would have to withstand the impact of hard, heavy chunks, some of them weighing as much as 10 tons, which would be dumped from the 4 ½ -cu. yd. dipper. 2. The coarse, rocky, abrasive material would soon damage a light truck body. 3. The body of a small truck could not be efficiently loaded with coarse rock.

The control of autogenous grinding circuits is very similar to the control of conventional grinding circuits. In both circuits the classifier must be operated to achieve the required degree of mineral liberation. Crude ore grade and grinding mill density are important in both circuits. The biggest difference between the control of the two circuits is the pronounced effect that crude ore changes have on autogenous circuits. The importance of crude grade, weight recovery, size and hardness is greatly magnified because the crude ore in the autogenous circuit is also supplying the grinding media. Crude ore sizing is a particularly critical factor in achieving efficient primary autogenous milling. Because of the above, computer control is advantageous for autogenous circuits. Changes in crude ore may necessitate rapid changes in the entire circuit control strategy, and only a computer can facilitate these changes. Also, the techniques of control are very different for conventional and for autogenous grinding. Set-point control is usually satisfactory in conventional circuits, but the multiplicity of varying conditions in an autogenous circuit usually require some type of computer optimizing search routine. Autogenous mills can be separated into two general types. In primary autogenous mills the media is obtained from the mill feed, and in pebble mills the sized pebble media is added separately from the material being ground. ALTHOUGH flotation of coal is considered relatively new in the United States by coal-preparation engineers, actually it has been practiced to some extent for the past 30 years, It is practiced much more widely in Europe than in the United States. Commercial plants are operating in nearly all major coal-producing countries of the world. A froth flotation plant has been operating since 1930 at the Champion No, 1 preparation plant of the Pittsburgh Coal Co. Unfortunately the term flotation is widely used in the United States by coal-preparation engineers to designate dense medium processes of coal cleaning. As used here, flotation means those processes for cleaning fine sizes of coal in which the coal is collected in a froth or matte at or near the surface of a pulp. The refuse particles remain in the pulp. Two distinct types of flotation are practiced: froth flotation and agglomeration. FORMS OF FLOTATION The theory of the principles of flotation and of the physicochemical foundations surrounding this process has become a complex and scientific field and coal-preparation engineers contemplating use of flotation processes would do well to study the works of Gaudin, 2, 5 Taggart, 3 Zimmerman, 4 Wark, 6 Ralston, 7 Petersen. 8 Bulk Oil Flotation.-In this process the separation of mineral from gangue is accomplished by virtue of the fact that minerals of metallic lustre, as sulphides, or hydrocarbons, as coal and graphite, are wetted preferentially by oil in the presence of water and consequently pass into the interface between oil and water; while gangue or rock is wetted by water and remains in the medium. Beginning in 1860 with Haynes and later between 1897 and 1907, at least 25 patents were granted for bulk oil flotation. Large quantities of oil are required, generally 3 to 25 per cent by weight of feed, and recovery of such oil is a major problem. The Elmore process 3 (1901 and 1902) is an example of a bulk oil process, The Trent process (1902-25) has been used for the cleaning of coal on a commercial scale, According to E. W, Davidson 9 there were five such plants operating in the United States by 1925. They have since been abandoned.

The Laredo oil district, South Texas, includes an area of approximately 200 miles long north and south and 75 miles wide, embracing the following counties: Starr, Zapata, Jim Hogg, Webb, Duval and McMullen. The area is relatively old in respect to the production of oil, as the first oil was discovered and produced in the Piedra Pintas field in Duval County on Sept. 10, 1905. Since that date, continuous new discoveries have contributed to the development of this district until, at the present time, it is one of the important oil-producing and gas-producing areas in the world. The year 1937 also had its share of new discoveries in the district, including not only new oil fields but also new sands in already producing pools and important extensions to existing sands and fields. Among the most important field discoveries, by counties, are: Duval County..... Benavides, Sweden, Thomas-Lockhart, Labbe and Lundell fields Jim Hogg County.. Las Animas field McMullen County. Ezzell field Starr County...... El Tanque field Webb County..... Killam and Oilton fields Of these, Benavides, Oilton, Killam and Ezzell have so far proved themselves most important; the Benavides field, Duval County, showing by far the most activity. For the year 1937, therc were 283 wildcat tests drilled in this district, of which 35 were oil producers, 20 completed as gas wells and 228 abandoned as dry holes. Duval County, as usual, received the greatest amount of wildcat drilling, having 21 oil wells, 5 gas wells and 63 dry holes completed during the year for a total of 89 tests.
