Predictions of creep closure for periods ranging up to more than 1,000 years are needed for designing a radioactive waste repository in a salt formation. Such long-term predictions must be based on the use of laboratory and field test results extrapolated by numerical modeling. Laboratory test results are presented which show highly variable creep behavior for salts from different sites as well as salts from the same site. Comparisons of measured creep closures against predicted closures are presented for two deep boreholes in Louisiana salt domes and for an exploratory shaft and drift in southeastern New Mexico bedded salt (WIPP). These data illustrate the significant uncertainties involved in long-term closure predictions and indicate the critical need for site-specific, in situ closure measurements over extended periods of time for repository design.

The high-temperature steady-state creep behavior of a series of dilute copper-silicon alloys was studied to determine the effect of stacking fault energy on the creep-rate. The steady-state creep rate is, when taken at equivalent diffusivities decreases with decreasing stacking fault energy. The stress and temperature dependencies of is suggest that creep is a difusion controlled dislocation climb process. Electron microscopy studies of the creep substructure revealed: 1) the subgrain size is not a function of the stacking fault energy in these alloys, 2) the dislocation density not attributed to the subgrain walls seems to be higher during primary creep and decreases to a lower steady value during steady-state creep, and 3) the dislocation density during steady-state creep decreases with decreasing stacking fault energy. In the past few years numerous investigators have studied the influence of stacking fault energy on high-temperature creep strength. Most of these investigators have confined their attentions to studying the relationship between steady-state creep rate, is, and stacking fault energy, ?, when samples are tested under conditions of comparable stress and temperature. For the case of fcc metals, it was initially shown by Barrett and Sherbyl and since confirmed by many others2"4 that is decreases with decreasing ?, often following an empirical relation of the form i ?m where m is a constant about equal to 3. The application of theory to explain this observation has not been entirely successful. One of the main difficulties has been the almost complete lack of structural information (dislocation density, subgrain size, and so forth) for samples with different stacking fault energies, tested under high-temperature creep conditions. weertman5 has attempted to explain the stacking fault energy dependence of is on the basis of a dislocation climb mechanism. Assuming that both the rate of dislocation core diffusion and the ease of athermal jog formation decreases as ? decreases Weertman has argued that the rate of dislocation climb and hence the creep rate should also decrease as ? decreases. One questionable aspect of Weertman's analysis is the assumption that core diffusion down extended dislocations is slower than core diffusion down unextended dislocations. The only experimental work done in this area, by Birnbaum et al.6 on nickel and Ni-60 Co, has shown the core diffusivity to increase with decreasing ?. Theories of steady-state creep based on the diffusive motion of jogged screw dislocations often seem unable to predict even the qualitative nature of the es- relationship. Assuming that Weertman is correct in his assumption that the dislocation jog density decreases with decreasing ? then the jogged screw theories predict an increasing dislocation velocity with lower ?. It is usually assumed that the increase in dislocation velocity implies a corresponding increase in creep rate. However, two other factors must be considered before such a statement can be made. That is, we must know how both the mobile dislocation density and the effective stress (the difference between applied stress and internal stress) vary with ?. Significant changes in either one of these factors could outweigh any change in dislocation velocity accompanying a change in ?. And with the slower rates of recovery expected in low stacking fault energy materials it seems likely to expect both mobile dislocation density and effective stress to be dependent on ?. Sherby and Burke7 have suggested that stacking fault energy influences the creep rate in an indirect way. These authors cite evidence that the steady-state subgrain size generated during high-temperature creep is a function of ? decreasing with decreasing ?. Assuming the creep rate to be proportional to the area swept out by each expanding dislocation loop and that subgrain boundaries are good barriers to dislocations, then the creep rate should be proportional to subgrain area, hence increasing as ? increases. A critical evaluation of any of the above theories requires more quantitative information concerning the dislocation substructure generated during high-temperature creep. Accordingly this investigation was undertaken with an aim of studying the influence of stacking fault energy on tbe steady-state creep characteristics of a series of dilute copper-silicon alloys. Special emphasis was placed on studying the strain dependence of both the dislocation configuration and density. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE Dilute copper-silicon alloys of the compositions shown in Table I were tested in tension at constant stress. The relative stacking fault energy of these alloys has been determined and is shown in Table 11. In this investigation, polyethylene terephthalate (Mylar) was coated with various thicknesses of a vapor-deposited silvel- precoat followed by a uapor-deposited zinc using several orders of- magnitude variation in deposition rate of both the silver and zinc. The grain size and resistivity of the zinc film was primarily a function of the silver precoat thickness (in the range of 0.001 to 10 average Agprecoat thickness) and a secondary function of the zinc film thick-ness. The silver and zinc deposition rates were found to have a minor effect on the characteristics of- the zinc film. Electron and X-ray dilffraction results slwwed that all zinc films exhibited a fiber texture mith the (0001) axes essentially perpendiculav to the platze of the film When coating nonmetallic substrates such as paper or plastics with zinc metal vapors, it is found that the zinc will not condense unless extremely high evaporation rates or very low substrate temperatures are used. In 1931, Fraser' reported a procedure whereby zinc could be made to condense on nonmetallic substrates by depositing a very thin precoat of silver. Utilizing Fraser's method, the ermans' developed a commercial process of making "metallized film" capacitors during World War 11. The metallizing process, which was introduced in the United States shortly after the conclusion of World War 11, became one of the first large-scale commercial applications of vapor-deposited metal films and remains one of the larger applications in the electronics industry. The process, as developed by the Germans, consisted of depositing a thin precoat of silver on lacquered, kraft paper followed by a conducting layer of zinc. The resulting silver-zinc film was used as the capacitor The term silver-zinc will be used throughout thiz paper to mean a metal film formed by an extremely thi layer of silver, 10A or less in average thickness, and a zinc film IOOA or more in thickness deposited on the silver film. ---. electrode with the lacquered paper being the dielectric. The Industrial Board of the Department of Commerce has been formed under the chairmanship of George N. Peek, formerly vice-chairman of the War Industries Board. This Board is to put into practical effect a program for the readjustment of prices for basic materials in such a fashion as to create a firm foundation on which the consumer can base his future purchases, and the producer can form necessary estimates. It has the assistance of the Council of National Defense. One of the first steps off the Board was to call into conference the leaders of industry. At these conferences the general conditions of the country are carefully considered and an effort made to determine and understand the principles that should be applied to permit the successful solution of the problem. It will be the endeavor of the Board to act promptly by consulting and interchanging views with these representatives of industry in the fullest and freest manner possible with a view to aiding and assisting industry in general to resume activities to the fullest practicable extent.

I HAVE already referred to this interesting locality in the opening address, but at the request of some of the members of the Institute, brought before them specimens of the ore and the accompanying rock. The ore, which is cassiterite, is also met with elsewhere in Maine, at Paris and Hebron, but it there occurs associated with orthoclase, quartz, tourmaline, and beryl, in concretionary granite veins, which cut the micaceous gneisses of the White Mountain series. At Winslow the veins traverse an impure gray micaceous limestone, which is found in many parts of this region, and is subordinate to the same gneissic series. The veins, which are seldom more than an inch or two in thickness, are abundant through a considerable breadth of the rock, and are interlaminated with it, occupying places between the sedimentary layers, which are distinctly marked by different shades of color. Occasionally, however, they cut across the stratification for a little distance, showing that the disrupting action was not always confined to tearing the layers apart. The vein-stone consists of purple fluor-spar, and silvery white mica with quartz. In this gangue the cassiterite, nearly black in color, is disseminated in small crystalline masses, sometimes one-half an inch in diameter, and is associated with a little mispickel. I have only seen the veins as exposed at a single point, but was informed that similar veins holding the ore are met with at a distance of several thousand feet

THE production of crude oil in Wyoming rose to 44,290,010 bbl. in 1923 and declined, during 1924, to 39,295,030 bbl., a decrease of about 11 per cent. The Salt Creek field supplies 75 to 80 per cent. of the production. Pipeline runs from the Salt Creek field reached a maximum in November, 1923, at a daily average for the month of 116,437 barrels. During 1924, the gas pressure in Salt Creek has declined rapidly and the production dropped to about 60,000 bbl. per day. Part of 'the decline during the last few months was due to lack of power to pump the wells. The electric-power plant of the Midwest Refining Co. did not begin to deliver current until the middle of December, by which time several hundred wells were off production. The cold snap in December, which brought, the temperature down to 30° below zero on the 17th, tied up operations almost completely and the average production for the month was only 49,545 barrels. As more wells are being pumped and the number of dead wells reduced, the production is rising and was up to 61,000 bbl. during the last week of January. A further increase is expected as the weather becomes warmer. The production of Salt Creek, by months, during 1924 is given in Table 1. The purpose of this paper is to present some data and comparisons regarding three types of Rheolaveur plants washing bituminous coal from the Pittsburgh seam. It deals only with the sections that handle coarse coal. The Rheolaveur system consists of launders or troughs in which coal and its associated impurities are conveyed by water. The impurities. being heavier than the coal, settle toward the bottoms of the launders and are drawn off through specially designed openings called Rheo boxes. Fundamentally, each plant consists of straight-sided, flat-bottomed launders of varying width and length, each launder equipped with one or more Rheo boxes for the removal of high-grauity fractions of the feed that are undesirable in the cleaned coal. Each launder has at least two longitudinal sections, the first with a slope of from 11/2 to 4 in. per foot of length, called the classification section. The single-box launder has a classification section followed by a washing section ahead of the box. A two-box launder is a single-box launder followed by a washing section and a second box. The slope of the washing section between the first and second boxes is determined to some extent by tonnage. At the end of the classification section, which may. vary from 8 to 15 ft. in length, the slope abruptly flattens out to a slope of from 92' to 1 in. per foot of length. This flatter section of the launder, called the washing section, may vary from a few feet, in a single-box launder, to 15 ft., in a two-box launder. Raw coal entering the head end of what we choose to call the "primary" launder or launders is pushed down the classification section by a stream of water entering the head end of the launder with the coal. As it strikes the washing section, of lower pitch, the velocity of flow is retarded and the heavier particles of slate, pyrite, bone, etc., take their places on the bottom and are drawn off as they pass over the Rheo boxes. Activity in the oil fields of the state was at a low ebb during the year because of the longest period of low prices that has yet prevailed, which has been detrimental to both the eastern and western sections of the state. Production for the state as a whole shows a drop of 209,192 bbl. during 1939, the total being 5,356,963 bbl. The loss is in the production of the western division, where a loss of approximately 300,000 bbl. more than offset a gain of approximately 100,000 bbl. in the eastern division. The loss in the western division can be attributed to decline in drilling activity due to the low prices prevailing, which were caused by flooding of the normal markcts with cheap Illinois crude. The gain in the eastern division is the result of repressuring operations begun in previous years and now showing results, and not to any renewed drilling activity. Gas development in western Kentucky during 1939 was of minor importance. In eastern Kentucky approximately 50 producing gas wells were drilled, which were sufficient for present market with excess reserves already developed. With the severe winter and additional industry load every gas well connected has been on line for the past three months. Although all demands are being met, development will be greatly increased during 1940 to meet depletion. From the geological point of view, the drilling activity in the western division developed additional information of benefit. Several wells on blocks of acreage assembled in previous years were drilled in the deeper parts of the Western Coal Basin—southern part of the Illinois Basin— giving for the first time accurate information about the Pennsylvanian and lower formations down to and through the Devonian.

FactoRs entering into the market value of coal are its grade, and the cost of labor, material, and capital. Reduction in these costs cannot be expected in the future, and it therefore follows that greater economy in their use must be accomplished if it is desired to hold the present markets; more tons of product per unit must be obtained in a given time from both men and material, and means devised for increasing the percentage of lump and domestic sizes. This paper is presented for the purpose of inviting discussion and stimulating thought in regard to the influence of methods of procedure and plans of mining, upon the quality of coal, the economical use of labor, material, and capital, and the cost of production. Even the better methods of the present day leave much to be desired, and a review of the reasons and necessities for their use may be of value in pointing the way to more economical mining. The writer does not attempt to discuss untried methods of mining, but rather to state clearly and concisely a summary of the results obtained under the several methods of procedure that have been adopted. In some instances a high degree of concentration has been effected, and comparisons of the results obtained with the results of lesser degrees of concentration form an interesting study. It is believed that much may be accomplished in improving the quality, and in the more economical use of labor, material, and capital, by concentration, and it is to concentration in particular that your study is invited. The writer, who has occasion to visit many mines, most of which are under different management, has been inclined to the opinion that improvement has been retarded in many ways and that mining has not as yet been entirely freed from the early-day practices which were forced upon it. Practices resulting in lack of concentration, to which reference will be made, are: The absence of robbing, necessitating the frequent interposition of barrier pillars; lack of system and of proper supervision, resulting in losses of life and coal. The crude-oil production of Germany without Austria during 1938 amounted to 3,864,518 bbl., representing an increase of 21.7 per cent over the 3,173,373 bbl. produced in 1937. Adding the Austrian production, the crude-oil production of the new German Reich totaled 4,259,717 bbl. during 1938, representing an increase of 25.3 per cent compared with the respective figures of the previous year. According to published official data, and using a conversion factor of 1 metric ton equaling 7 bbl., the oil production of Germany in 1938 was as shown in Table 1. A semiofficial publication1 states that the program of the crude-oil industry for the second year (1938) of the four-year plan was successfully accomplished. According to the same source, new drilling developments at the following localities were promising: Reitbrook near Hamburg, Heide in Holstein, Eicklingen-Sandlingen near Celle, Steimbke near Nienburg, Worms in the Rhine Valley, Gifhorn near Braunschweig, Mölme near Oberg, and at other places. The drilling activity for oil is illustrated by the figures in Table 2.

The mechanical responses and residual defect structures in 70/30 brass and type 304 stainless steel following explosive shock loading and cold reduction by rolling have been studied. A distinct relationship was observed to exist between the residual mechanical properties and micro structures observed by transmission electron microscopy. Shock-loaded brass deformed primarily by the formation of coplanar arrays of dislocations and stacking faults at lower pressures, and twin-faults (deformation twins and €-martensite bundles) at higher pressures (> 200 kbar). The micro -structures of cold-rolled brass were characterized by dense dislocation fields elongated in the rolling direction. Stainless steel was observed to deform by the formation of dense arrays of stacking faults at lower shock pressures and twin-faults at high shock pressures (>200 kbar). Lightly cold-rolled stainless steel deformed similar to low Pressure shock-loaded stainless steel, but transformed to a' martensite in heavily cold-rolled stainless steel. Discontinuous yielding was observed for the heavily cold-rolled stainless steel, and stress reluxution in the weyield region for cold-rolled and shock -loaded stainless steel was interpreted as an indication of the ability of twin-faults and stacking faults to act as effective barriers to dislocation motion. A simple model for the formation of the planar defects and a' martetnsite is presented based on the propagating of Shochley partial and half-partial dislocations. A considerable effort has been expended over the past decade in an attempt to elucidate the response of metallic-crystalline solids to the passage of a high velocity shock wave (e.g., smith,' Dieter,2 and zukas3). While it has been possible to obtain relevant information pertaining to the residual defect structures and mechanical properties, there have been few rigorous attempts to draw a direct comparison between these structures and properties. In addition, numerous investigators have recently observed the occurrence of deformation twinning in shock deformed fcc metals (e.g., Nolder and Thomas,4 and Johari and Thomas5), but little attempt has been made to elucidate the mechanisms of formation of these defects. Comparative data for metals deformed by shock-loading and the same metals deformed by more conventional modes of deformation such as cold-reduction by rolling is also generally lacking. The present investigation therefore has the following objectives: 1) to examine the mechanical properties of some explosively shock loaded and cold-rolled fcc metals of low stacking-fault energy as a function of their residual substructures; 2) to present a simple model for the formation twin-faults and related defect structures in the low stack-ing-fault energy materials of interest (70/30 brass, ySFg= 14 ergs per sq cm; and 304 stainless steel, ySF = 21 ergs per sq cm); 3) to make some deductions with regard to the residual characteristics of dislocation and planar defect substructures in cold rolled and shock loaded 70/30 brass and type 304 stainless steel. In particular, it was desirable to characterize the residual hardening effects of particular deformation substructures. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Sheet samples of 70/30 brass (0.005 and 0.15 in. thick; annealed at 659°C for 2 hr) and type 304 stainless steel (0.007 in. thick; annealed 0.25 hr at 1060°C) of nominal compositions shown in Table I were cold-rolled in one direction only to produce reductions in thickness of 15, 30, 45, 60, and 75 pct in the brass; and 5, 15, 25, 35, and 45 pct in the stainless steel. Identical sheet samples in the annealed (unrolled) state were subjected to plane compressive shock waves to various peak pressures ranging from 0 to 400 kbar in the brass and 0 to 425 kbar in the stainless steel; and with a constant peak pressure duration of approximately 2 microseconds. A detailed description of the shock loading technique has been given previously.6 Tensile specimens 1.0 in. in length and 0.125 in. in width were cut from the cold-rolled sheets (tensile axis parallel to the rolling direction), and the shock-loaded sheet specimens. Stress (load)-strain (elongation) measurements on the tensile specimens were made on a Tinius-Olsen load-compensating tensile tester using a strain rate of 2.7 x 10-3 sec-1. Tensile tests were repeated at least twice, giving essentially the same results. Stress relaxation measurements in the preyield region were also made using an initial strain rate of 5.4 x 10-4 sec-1. In addition to tensile and stress relaxation measurements, Vickers microhardness measurements were made on all samples. A total of 100 microhard-ness readings were obtained for each specimen following a light electropolish to ensure uniform surface conditions for all tests. The hardness averages ob-

One of the most vital problems in the manufacture of steel at present is the occurrence of the defects that have been popularly termed "snow flakes," "flakes," or "scabs." Particularly is this the problem of many manufacturers who, during the past 2 yr., have undertaken large-scale production for the first time. A study of the microstructure of such defective material throws considerable light upon the nature of these defects and is essential before measurcs may be taken for the elimination of the defects. Flakes do not appear to be found in the plain carbon steels; they have been found. however, in abundance in some of the simple alloy steels that are being used in such vast quantities; vie., nickel steel of the approximate composition, 0.40 carbon and 3.5 per cent. nickel, and in the chrome-nickel type. The present article summarizes the characteristic features of defective steel of the flaky type as they have been found by laboratory study of numerous specimens, and it aims to show the conditions within the metal that are favorable to the occurrence of this type of defect without entering into the details of mill practice (size of ingot, design of molds, rate of cooling, distribution of cooling stresses, etc.), all of which conditions appear to play a role in the production of these defects. MacrostrUctURe To one familar with flaky steel, the appearance of "snow-flakes" is unmistakable and is not to be confused with other types of defects. Figs. 1 to 6 show the appearance of fractures of steel showing this type of defect; the white silvery area, which always has the appearance of being of a very coarsely crystalline structure, in the specimen stands out in bold contrast to the darker background and readily justifies the use of the term "snow-flakes." The 1943 designation of districts for the Transactions† has caused some confusion because of the elimination of the West Central Texas district and the allocation of the counties of this district to the North Texas district and the North Central Texas district. The North Central Texas district as herein defined includes the counties of Brown, Callahan, Cole-man, Comanche, Coryell, Eastland, Erath, Fisher, Hamilton, Hood, Jones, Lampasas, Mills, Nolan, Palo Pinto, Parker, San Saba, Shackelford, Stephens, Stonewall, Summerville, Taylor, Throckmorton and Wise. These counties as listed are the counties of District 7B, State Railroad Commission. This district covers the south central crest and the west flank of the Bend flexure north of the Llano uplift. The west flank of the Bend flexure is on the east boundary of the Permian Basin of West Texas. The North Texas district, District No. 9, State Railroad Commission, includes the counties of Archer, Clay, Cooke, Foard, Hardeman, Jack, Knox, Montague, Wichita, Wilbarger and Young. The area of this district covers the crest and south flank of the Red River uplift and the north central crest of the Bend flexure. The greater part of the oil and gas produced in the past from the North Central Texas district has been from Pennsyl-vanian strata. Some oil and gas has been produced from the lower Permian (by the latest selection of the Pennsylvanian-Permian boundary') and minor amounts from the Mississippian and Ordovician sediments. Increasingly important quantities of oil and gas are to be expected from the older sediments by deeper development in proven fields and by new discoveries. Most of the oil and gas in the district has accumulated in localized, well-defined structural traps in limestone and sandstone reservoirs and in traps due to stratigraphic changes in sedimentation, mainly porosity traps in limestone and sandstone lenses, both usually associated with some structural feature. The Stripper Well Premium Plan as adopted by the office of the Federal Price Administrator has been an aid to the producers of stripper wells. The producers are pleased to receive the subsidy to prolong the plugging of wells, but they are not too pleased with the subsidy plan in principle. Most independent operators are in favor of, and think they are entitled to, an increase in the market price for oil. The price is not adequate to meet the requirements of the average independent operator with the continued advance in production, development and wildcatting costs. Old and new pipe lines for oil and gas leading out of the state are removing reserves at an alarming rate. Curves showing the rate of discovery versus production and pipe-line deliveries in and out of the state make a cross that sooner or later will be fatal to the state. Wildcatting not only needs a price increase but every other available incentive and encouragement.

In the extension of molybdenum single crystals at room temperature, the slip planes were found to be of the type (1101; the slip direction <111>. Theories of plasticity of body-centered cubic metals have been examined, and an explanation based upon planes of highest atomic density seems plausible to explain the plastic behavior of molybdenum single crystals. IN body-centered cubic metals, slip has been reported to occur on several planes; these are of the type {110), {112), and (123). Andrade has correlated&apos; the operative slip planes in body-centered cubic metals with the testing temperature relative to the melting point. In this correlation, if T is the absolute temperature at which slip takes place and Tm the absolute melting point, then the acting slip planes in body-centered cubic metals may be arranged as shown in Table I. However, deviations from this correlation have been reported in iron and iron-silicon alloys2 and also in molybdenum deformed at a temperature around 2400°C." In the case of iron and other body-centered cubic metals or alloys in which all three slip planes have been reported to be active at any one temperature, the crystallographic mechanism of slip is not well understood. Numerous investigators in this field have assumed that the resolved shear stress is a deciding factor. Such considerations were given by Gough in his experiments with repeated torsion of iron single crystals4 and recently by Opinsky and Smoluchowski in their study of iron-silicon alloys," and will be dealt with later in this report. A third possibility is that slip lines in body-centered cubic metals may be formed by alternate slip on nonparallel (110) planes and not by slip on any plane of higher indices. This was advanced by Elam in the case of ß brass." Since (1101 planes are planes of highest atomic density in the body-centered cubic structure, this hypothesis would be in accordance with the plastic behavior of metals in other systems, namely, face-centered cubic and hexagonal close-packed. Experimental evidence in support of this hypothesis is lacking. Nevertheless the work of Barrett, Ansel, and Meh12 has definitely demonstrated that the slip resistance on {110} planes in iron is very much smaller compared with that on (112) and (123) planes. In the present investigation, molybdenum single crystals were carefully documented as to the operative slip planes and lattice reorientations after plastic extension at room temperature. In three crystals studied, (110) planes were found to be active invariably rather than the (112) planes, which were previously reported for molybdenum at this temperature&apos; and predicted by Andrade&apos;s theory.&apos; In two other cases (112) and (123) planes seemed to operate together with (110) planes as active slip planes. However, it is believed, after careful analysis of crystallite and lattice rotations, that slip on (112) and (123) planes may be spurious. Particular reference will be made to the formation of asterism, lattice rotation, and crystallite rotation in an attempt to show that slip apparently observed on {1121} and (123) planes is actually slip on nonparallel {110} planes. Materials and Treatment Sintered molybdenum rods ? in. in diam, obtained from the Fansteel Metallurgical Co., were reported to have a purity of 99.9 pct.* One specimen, Mo-13, ¼ in. in diam, was supplied by Westinghouse Electric Corp. THE present system of competitive exploitation of oil pools results in losses, both of petroleum and of profits. Under a competitive system the owner produces or withholds his product according to the price, which reflects the demand, but in the pe-troleum industry the producer does not have complete control over the expansion and contraction of his out-put. Under a series of court decisions, reviewed in detail in the paper, petroleum is not covered by- the general theory of English common law that the owner of land owns everything from the center of the earth to the sky within the areal limits of his property, but is considered to be his only when he has reduced it. to possession, which he can only do by taking it out of the ground. If A can obtain possession of the petro-leum which is beneath the property of B without tres-passing on B&apos;s property he commits no legal wrong and B has no defense except to get it into his (surface) possession before A takes it. No one would expect an. owner under such a system to forego the possibility of securing some oil from his property in order to in-crease the ultimate production of the pool. The pe-troleum industry. should offer a constructive program, that will eliminate losses and protect the interests of individuals as far as possible. If improved methods of oil recovery can be applied the quantity of petroleum recovered might be double or even treble the amount recovered by ordinary procedure. But increased recovery is not the only benefit from pool development. In brief, the following advantages can be claimed for unit operation: 1. Saving in development and operating costs. 2. Less danger of damage to the fields by defective wells. 3. Development is better gaged to fit market demand and to effect the most efficient recovery of oil. 4. More oil, gas, and gasoline can be marketed. 5. By regulating pressures, recovery .of oil and gas will be greater and the wells will flow longer. Reagan County (Big Lake), Rainbow Bend and Cabin Creek are examples of longer life of pools thus obtained.
