MANY processes for cleaning coal that are in use depend primarily on physical properties of coal and refuse other than specific gravity and surface conditions relating to froth flotation. These properties are' shape, coefficient of sliding friction, resilience, friability, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical conductivity. In many of these processes specific gravity does have some effect and many separators are designed to utilize more than one of the physical properties cited. Although the processes described herein do not have a widespread application, yet for specific coals and specific conditions, they are economically important. A problem confronting many coal-mining districts is the marketing of the slacks or screenings and dust passing the final sizing screens. Proc¬esses in commercial use installed primarily to increase the form value, and hence the market value, of these slacks and dusts include briquetting, packaging, and low-temperature carborization. MECHANICAL PICKERS Machines utilizing shape, frictional resistance, and differences in resilience of coal and impurities are usually called mechanical pickers. They require a closely sized feed, therefore their use is confined to the pea, nut, and egg sizes. Various types of these devices are described by Berrisford, 1. 2 Taggart, and Yeele.

Feed preparation circuits, which involve such unit processes as size reduction, classification, and beneficiation are inherently a capital and operating cost intensive part of synthetic fuels plants. These circuits, as encountered in similar minerals industry operations, have until now been designed more or less by individual experience and preference mainly because of the large number of variables involved. As a first step towards a computer-aided design tool, a flowsheet simulator has been developed based on an executive program which can connect and drive modular subroutines according to the proposed circuit. The most efficient and appropriate mathematical models were selected as modular sub- routines among available sources such as SPOC, ASPEN, and DOE. Advantages and limitations of this kind of approach are discussed from the system architecture and methodology transfer standpoints with special emphasis on synfuels circuits.

A simple and inexpensive clay imprint core orienting device has been developed by Dr. R. D. Call. It has a minimum of moving parts, is durable and easily used by drillers, and adds only 15 minutes to a core run. Conventional wire-line drilling and a drill hole inclined 30° to 60° from the horizontal plane are required. The device will not operate in a vertical hole. The orientor is an eccentrically weighted downhole device which can be constructed in a mine shop from an old inner core barrel and lead. Modeling clay is packed in the core lifter case, which is screwed on the downhole end of the orientor. A clay imprint of the bottom of the hole is taken after each coring run. This imprint is matched to the top of the succeeding core run, the drill core is pieced together, and a reference line representing the drill hole is scribed on each core. Fracture attitudes are measured relative to the reference line and the core axis. On recent drilling projects, tests for imprint reproducibility were conducted. The results of these tests show an average variation of f3" in location of the scribed reference line between imprints. Comparisons of surface mapping data with oriented core data are good. It is rare that the entire length of drill core in intensely fractured zones can be oriented because it is impossible to piece the core together. However, if a triple tube set-up is used, a modification in the scribing procedure can result in a good statistical sampling of the fracture population. Attitudes of major structures have been oriented with this technique.

On February 1, 1971, United States Steel Corporation, Lorain Works began operation of its first BOP facility equipped with a partial combustion gas cleaning system.- This shop consists of two 220 ton vessels. Figure I schematically describes this partial combustion gas cleaning system and highlights the necessary features for it-s safe and efficient operation. Waste gases are drawn into the membrane hood by a 2250 H.P. induced draft fan and are first quenched by the six inch bull nozzle at the top of the hood. Larger solid particles are separated from the gas in the quencher venturi and final scrubbing takes place in the P-A high energy venturi scrubber before the cleaned waste gas is burned in the flare stack. Scrubbing water is routed through a cyclone separator and then cycled into one of two 100' diameter thickeners. Underflow sludge which averages 20% solids is dewatered by 100 H.P. centrifuges. The clear overflow from the thickeners is recycled first to the P-A venturi and then to the quencher before returning to the thickeners.

Comp. -A uranate of uranyl, lead, usually thorium (or zirconium), often the metals of the lanthanum and yttrium groups; also containing the gases nitrogen, helium and argon, in varying amounts up to 2'6 p. c. Calcium and water (essential?) are present in small quantities; iron also, but only as an impurity. The relation between the bases varies widely and no definite for- mula can be given. Radium was first discovered in this mineral and it has been shown that it and the helium present are products of the breaking down of the uranium.

Mr. Eschholz discusses the particular case of large precipitators installed in connection with large metallurgical operations, and receiving their high-potential energy through the conversion of alternating current to direct current by means of the mechanical rectifier. He classifies these mechanical rectifier installations, according to source of power, as follows: System A.-Applications utilizing individual alternating-current generators, either single-phase or polyphase, installed exclusively for furnishing energy to one or more transformer-rectifier-precipitator units. System. B.-Applications having no special alternating-current generators, but utilizing the existing alternating-current industrial or lighting mains to supply the energy to one or more transformer-rectifier-precipitator units. System C.-Applications receiving their energy from high-tension power circuits supplied directly to potential regulator-rectifier-precipitator units. I do not intend here to enter upon a detailed technical discussion of the foregoing classes, which would really interest only the manufacturers of electrical apparatus and the electrical engineers. INTRODUCTION The production of fines is an unwanted side-effect in most crystallization processes. The definition of “fines" is relative to the size of the desired product and varies from <30 mesh for coarse KC1 fertilizers to subsieve organic material produced by salting-out pro- cesses. Sometimes a well-developed fines distribution is necessary in the production of large crystals, e.g. the fines removal stream from a potash crystallizer. The production of fines is usually not desired in a crystallization separation step. However, product purity can either improve or degenerate with a decrease in crystal size depending on the relative importance of product washing vs mother liquor occlusions in determining over-all purity. Typically, both washing efficiency and mother liquor occlusions decrease with decreasing particle size. Fine crystal distributions have historically been difficult to measure and categorize; however this situation is changing rapidly with the use of electronic particle counters of the electrical zone- sensing or light scattering type. In fact, fine-crystal measurement is perhaps the key to better understanding and control of coarse- crystal crystallization processes. The fine-crystal distribution carries much useful information from which nucleation and growth rates can be inferred. The purpose of this paper is to briefly discuss a few crystallization processes in which production and/or measurement of fines is important and to categorize the process conditions which yield a fine- crystal product.

Extraction of uranium from ores is being accomplished by processes which, for the most part, subject the entire ore to acid or carbonate leaching. Ore deposits with a U3O8 content below 0.10 pct U3O8 are seldom considered suitable for treatment by leaching. A preliminary concentration that would enrich the uranium content of an ore by a simple, low cost process based on physical properties of the ore might result in some low grade deposits becoming commercial ores. In addition, the process might be employed in existing operations to reduce transportation and leaching costs and to increase capacity of existing leaching plants.

Previous research at the Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology indicated that it is practical and economically feasible to place stiff back- fill in a cut-and-fill stope. This backfill would reduce wall closure and high stress buildup in pi1llars, thus alleviating rockburst potential. Three ;topes from the Sunshine Mine, of the Coeur d’Alene Mining District, were chosen for a test verification of this concept. Although the first stope was lever mined beyond the initial cut (for economic reasons), some vibrating wire stressmeter results were obtained and found to compare favorably with numerical predictions. Some other instrumentation devices were built and tested, but never installed .

The Elliot Lake uranium deposits are contained in a pebble conglomerate which is similar throughout the basin. This paper compares the solid-liquid separation circuits of two nominal 3000 T/d acid leach uranium concentrates treating Elliot Lake ore. One concentrator employed rotary vacuum drum filtration for solids removal and washing, the .other used counter current decantation in torque arm thickeners. Capital and operating costs, operation and maintenance, and metallurgical performance of the two solution recovery methods are compared and contrasted. A recent development, removal of the sand fraction ahead of C.C.D. and separate sand washing in hydraulic cyclones, is also discussed.

PINE Creek mine of Union Carbide Nuclear Co. is some 23 miles northwest of Bishop, Calif., in the Sierra Nevada Mts. Office and mill are 7800 ft above sea level, the 1500 level portal is at 9300 ft, the A level portal at 10,800 ft, and the 3050 portal at 11,500 ft. Original claims were located in 1916, and the mine worked intermittently until 1936, when it was purchased by Union Carbide Corp. Since then the property has been operated continuously, except for two brief periods when operations were suspended because of manpower shortages. Mine production through 1956 amounted to 2,792,425 dry tons of ore.

Few of the present generation of American steel metallurgists are aware of the very important part taken by Swedish engineers in the successful development of the Bessemer proeess, and I am afraid some of the older ones have forgotten it. Certainly, I think, most of us would have said that Terre Noire was the first to introduce the use of metal direct from the blast-furnace. It is very well, therefore, that honor should be given to whom honor is due. I can speak from personal experience upon one part only of Prof. Akerman&apos;s paper; namely, the effect of the temperature at which the molten metal is cast upon the quality of the finished steel. Longwall mining is the term used for the underground extraction of a wide and deep panel of coal. Such a panel may be blocked out by one or more entries on either side ("head" and "tail") of a longwall face. If all the entries are pre-driven, the panel extraction is termed longwall retreat mining. With one exception, all the longwall faces in the United States are of this type.1 Prior to the general decline in the rates of production with Continuous Miners, the development of the multiple entries generally kept ahead of the longwall extraction rate. This is no longer the case: longwall extraction rates far exceed the rate of development. In addition to this problem, in newly established mines, the development of a haulage and bleeder system based on multiple entries results in a lead-time of three years or more before longwall mining can be applied.
