The grain size of a metal or alloy is one of the most important factors determining its properties. In steels, for example, grain size affects hardenability, toughness and machinability; in brasses, grain size is related to hardness and deep-drawing quality. In the field of heat-resistant alloys, grain size has a marked effect on ductility, creep and endurance strength. In order to determine these effects, as well as to control the properties of materials, many accurate and rapid measurements of grain size must be made. This paper presents a new and improved method for the estimation of grain size. Usual Methods OF EvaluatiNg Grain Size A frequetly used method of estimating grain size is that of comparing the image of a polished and etched specimen on the ground-glass screen of a metallographic microscope with standard grain-size charts. Several types of standards are available for use with different classes of microstructures. Geometric Grids.—The Metals Handbook' has a series of hexagonal grids ranging in size from ASTM No. I to 8. Idealized Grain Networks.—Idealized grain.boundary networks for ASTM grain sizes I to 8 are included in the American Society for Testing Materials Tentative Standard E 19 - 39 T, standard Micrographs & Metals Handbook and ASTM Tentative Standard E19-3gT contain micrographs of hypo-eutectoid and hypereutectoid steels ranging in grain size from No. I to 8. The grain size of annealed brass (diameter of the average grain in millimeters) is obtained by comparison with 10 micrographs of varying. grain size in ASTM Tentative Standard E 2-39 T. A handicap to accurate evaluation of grain size by this method is the fact that it is difficult to compare photographs in a dimly lighted room with the image on the ground-glass screen, or, if the general illumination is increased so that the printed standards may be clearly seen, the contrast of the image of the unknown is decreased. It is easier to estimate grain size by comparing a micrograph of the unknown with the grain-size standards. However, photographing every specimen on which the grain size is desired is too costly in time and materials to be practicable. For hardened steels, the Shepherd or Jernkontoret fracture grain-size standards are very accurate and useful, but this method obviously cannot be applied to ductile alloys such as brass, stainless steels and austenitic heat-resistant alloys. (New York Meeting, February, 1912.) ELECTROSTATIC separation of ores in its present form is generally known as the Huff' process from the name of Charley H. Huff, of Boston, Mass., through whose constant and persistent labors (with the invention of Clinton E. Dolbear as a basis) the successful commercial process embracing separative machinery and the various electrifying devices has been developed step by step, and the finances for the long period of development provided, and the method finally established and recognized throughout the world as an important and successful addition to the ore-dressing department of metallurgy. The permanent field-success of electrostatic separation began in 1908 with a 20-ton Huff experimental mill built specially for the purpose by the American Zinc, Lead.& Smelting Co., in Platteville, Wis., a plant which was a success from the start and was gradually increased in capacity as the market-conditions warranted to 100 tons of concentrates per day. Much credit is due to the above-mentioned company for its initial venture, and for its assistance in applying the process to field use. Prior to 1908 electrostatic separators had been installed and operated (but for a comparatively short time, however) in a number of places; some under the patents of Mr. Dolbear by himself and associates, and some under the patents of Lucien I. Blake and Lawrence N. Morscher, by W. G. Swart, mining engineer, of Denver, who has always been a courageous advocate of electrostatic separation. Due to the difficulties experienced in the generation of the electrical charges, the primitiveness of the separators, the wooden construction instead of iron as at present, the lack of control of the electrical fields and other difficulties overcome by the later inventions of the Huff Electrostatic Separator Co.,

ESSO PRODUCTION RESEARCH CO., HOUSTON, TEX. A mathematical model that represents the conduction heating of a rock formation of limited permeability is formulated. Heat is introduced by the injection of a hot condensing gas into horizontal fractures through the formation. The fractures are assumed to be equally spaced; the flow of fluid is linear. The model consists of three coupled partial differential equations and two functional relationships. Temperature histories for both fractures and formation are obtained by numerical procedures. Application of the model in predicting in situ heating of oil shale is illustrated with four sample cases. Influences of shale thermal diffusivity, fluid pressure in the fracture and fracture spacing upon heating rate are demonstrated. In all cases considered, several years were required to heat all the formation to 700F with 1,000F steam. Less than 32 per cent of the injected heat was utilized for heating the shale. To facilitate extensive calculations of this type, a set of seven dimension-less quantities are derived. With this dimensionless system, the effect of controllable parameters on economics can be explored. INTRODUCTION Vast deposits of hydrocarbons are contained in oil shale formations in the western United States and in other countries. These hydrocarbons, known as kerogen, are difficult to recover because they are immobile solids and because the rock formations in which they are found have very limited permeability. The kerogen can be converted through pyrolysis to recoverable liquids and gases if the formation temperature is elevated to the range 600 to 800F. To accomplish this heating, the formation might be artificially fractured and a hot fluid injected into the fractures. If the injection and production wells are vertical and the fractures horizontal, interwell communication will be established and the hot fluid will flow from an injection well to a production well. In this process, some of the heat in the fluid will be given up and conducted into the formation. Products of pyrolysis will flow from the heated rock matrix into the fractures and be produced, commingled with the injected fluid. The practicality of such a process is strongly influenced by the rate at which heat can be transferred from the hot fluids to the formation. An analysis of this heat conduction problem is the subject of this paper. Linear flow of a condensing gas through a set of horizontal, equally spaced fractures is considered. Temperature histories for both fractures and formation are obtained from numerical procedures. The analysis also applies to formations containing streaks of natural permeability instead of fractures. Heat flow problems similar to the one treated here have been studied by other workers. Thomas1 has solved a radial problem in which he considers the injection of a noncondensing gas into a single, horizontal fracture and approximates the temperature profile in the fracture by a step function. The solutions to other problems, which are less similar to the present problem than the one treated by Thomas, have been reviewed by Spillette.2 In addition to these mathematical studies, a field test of an in situ shale oil recovery process using hot natural gas as the injected fluid has been reported.3 The first part of this paper is concerned with the mathematical development of the problem. The differential equations, boundary conditions and functional relationships which describe the physical model are formulated and the equations are cast into finite difference form. The method of solution of the difference equations is discussed (Appendix B). The second part of this paper presents results computed for a typical oil shale formation for which steam at 1,000F is the injected fluid. I. INTRODUCTION. THE general drift of the discussion as to the relative merits of pressure- and exhaust-fans has resulted, if we may judge from the prevailing practice, largely in favor of the latter. The subject has been hitherto treated, however, with special reference to highly gaseous mines, the effect of the form of ventilation upon dust-explosions having been too little considered. Even in mines containing practically no gas, dust-explosions may occur; and if, as I believe, pressure-fans are to be preferred for their effect upon dust, it may be worth while to reopen the debate, and to challenge the advisability of exhaust-ventilation under certain conditions. There are several forms of colliery-ventilation, which may be described as follows: Plain or simple pressure-ventilation, in which the fan acts as a pressure-fan, and the movement of coal is unobstructed at the surface by doors or equivalent devices in drifts or shafts, the traveling and haulage thus being in the return-current. Plain exhaust-ventilation, in which the fan acts as an exhaust-fan, the movement of coal being likewise unobstructed at the surface, and the traveling and haulage being in the intake. Obstructed pressure-ventilation, in which the movement of coal is obstructed at the surface, in order that the traveling and haulage may be in the intake. Obstructed exhaust-ventilation, in which the movement of coal is obstructed at the surface, in order that the traveling and haulage may be in the return. The apparent advantages in running a fan "pressure" during working-hours, and " exhaust" between shifts, seem to justify the recognition of this combination as a standard form of ven-

The solvent extraction of chromium 111 has been studied for the system Cr 111, H,SO., H,O/RNH/RNH., xylene, where the primary amine used was Primene JMT. Rate studies have shown that extremely long equilibrium times are required, ranging from 1 hr at 80°C to 20 days at room temperature. Heating the solution prior to extraction increases the rate of extraction. The variation in the amount of Cr 111 extracted is an inverse function of the acidity of the aqueous phase. Thus, the slow rates of extraction appear to be connected with the hydrolysis of the Cr I11 species. Extraction isotherms for the extraction of Cr 111 have been obtained for two sets of experimental conditions, namely at 60°C and for a heat-treated solution cooled to room temperature. The separation of Fe 111 from Cr 111 and Cr 111 from Cu 11 in sulfate solution by extraction with Primene JMT has been studied and shown to be feasible. A survey of the literature relating to the solvent extraction of chromium showed that, although many systems exist for extraction of Cr VI, only a very few reagents have been found to extract Cr 111. The extraction of Cr III by di-(2-ethyl hexyl) phosphoric acid has been reported by Kimura.' A straight-line dependence of slope —2 was observed between log D,, and the log mineral acid concentration at constant extractant concentration. Since the slope of this plot reflects the charge on the ion extracted, it must be concluded that a hydrolyzed species of Cr III is being extracted. Carboxylic acids generally do not form extractable complexes with Cr III but di-isopropyl salicylic acie does extract Cr 111. Simple acid backwashing of the organic phase, however, failed to remove the chromium. Similar difficulty in backwashing was found by Hellwege and Schweitzer8 in the extraction of Cr I11 with acetyl-acetone in chloroform. The extraction of Cr 111 from chloride solutions by alkyl amines has been reported4-' but the maximum amount of extraction achieved in these studies did not exceed 10%: From sulfate solutions, however, Ishimori" has shown that appreciable amounts of Cr I11 were extracted by amines. The amines used were tri-iso-octyl amine, Amberlite LA-1 (a secondary amine, Rohm & Haas) and Primene JMT (primary amine, Rohm & Haas). The efficiency of extraction with regard to amine type was primary>secondary> tertiary. Appreciable extraction of Cr I11 was recorded for Primene JMT as the aqueous phase acidity tended to zero. The major difficulty with Cr I11 in solvent extraction systems stems from the nonlabile nature of the ion in complex formation. This accounts for the slow rate of extraction generally experienced and the difficulty encountered in backwashing the Cr I11 from the organic phase in the case of liquid cation exchangers. Consequently, the possibility of extraction of Cr I11 as a complex anion is attractive since the backwashing problems should be minimized in this way. From published data, it appeared that the extraction of chromium from sulfate solutions of low acidity by primary amines afforded the best chance of success for a useful solvent extraction system for Cr iii This paper presents the results of a study of the extraction of Cr I11 from sulfate solution by Primene JMT and examines the application of such an extraction procedure for the recovery of chromium from liquors containing iron and copper. Experimental Chromium solutions were prepared from chrome alum in sulfuric acid and sodium sulfate so as to maintain a constant concentration of sulfate ion of 1.5 molar. Solutions of Primene JMT were prepared in xylene and the amine equilibrated with sulfuric acid/sodium sul-fate solutions, of the same acidity as the chromium solution, until there was no change in acidity between the initial and final aqueous phases. The solutions of Primene JMT conditioned in this way were then used for the equilibration experiments. Equilibrations at 25°C were carried out in stoppered conical flasks shaken in a thermostat; equilibrations at all other temperatures were carried out in stirred flasks in a thermostat. After equilibration, the phases were separated and analyzed for chromium. In the tests on the rate of extraction, small samples of equal volume of both phases were withdrawn from time to time and the chromium distribution determined. The chromium analyses were carried out either coloi-imetrically using diphenyl carbazide, or volu-metrically using addition of excess standard ferrous ammonium sulfate and back titration of the excess iron with potassium dichromate. The oxidation of Cr 111 to Cr VI in the case of the raffinate solution was effected by boiling with potassium persulfate in the presence of silver nitrate and, for the backwash solution, by boiling with sodium hydroxide and hydrogen peroxide. Results Preliminary experiments indicated that extraction results were effected by the age of the chromium solution, higher distribution coefficients being obtained with solutions which had been allowed to stand for some time. AT Grand Saline, some 65 miles east of Dallas, the Morton Salt Co. of Chicago has for some years operated a brine pumping and evaporation plant on a salt dome. They recently drilled trial holes to obtain data on the dome, preparatory to opening, a new mine, with the following results: The dome is in the form of a truncated cone, with an average of 210 ft. of cover. The top of the dome is approximately one mile in diameter, with the town of Grand Saline lying over the northern rim, and the sides slope off at an angle of 50" to 80" from the horizontal. The deepest holes were drilled to 900 ft. without penetrating beyond the salt, and indications are that the salt deposit is several thousand feet thick. As the deposit increases in area with the depth, there is undoubtedly enough salt to supply a mining operation for an almost unlimited period of years.

The object of this investigation was to determine the distribution of chemical elements within a large, killed alloy-steel ingot, by sulphur printing and quantitative chemical analysis. With regard to segregation in steel ingots, the factors of melting practice, pouring temperatures, mold design, etc., and the mechanics of solidification and its attendant functions, have been the subject of intensive study over a period of years by many investigators. Notable among these is the Sub-committee of the No. 5 Committee of the British Iron and Steel Institute. For an exposition of the many problems awaiting the researcher on the heterogeneity of steel ingots, the methods of attacking these problems, together with some of the answers, the reader is referred to the nine reports and numerous papers of that committee and its membership. Steelmaking Data Melt.—The heat was made in a 70-ton direct arc-type basic electric furnace. Furnace charge consisted of nickel-chromium-molybdenum steel, most of it in the form of heavy mill scrap. All of the scrap was charged cold. The standard double-slag method was employed, the heat being finished under a strong carbide slag. Aluminum was used as the deoxidizing agent. Tapping tempera- ture, as observed with an optical pyrometer, was 3000°F. Detail of Mold and Ingot Size.—Details of the ingot mold and the ingot itself are given in Fig. I. Teeming.—Teeming temperature of the subject ingot as observed with an optical pyrometer was 2830°F. The ingot was top-poured directly through a 1 1/2-in. nozzle and required 7 min., 44 sec. to fill up to the hot top. An additional 2 min., 30 sec. were required to fill the hot top. The ingot was stripped hot and charged with the remainder of the heat into an annealing furnace. There it was given the standard annealing cycle used for these ingots. Subsequent heat-treatments are described elsewhere in this paper. Sectioning and Preparation for Sulphur Printing Because of previous favorable experience in sectioning ingots up to 21 1/2 in. square with an oxyacetylene torch, it was decided to use this method to section the subject ingot. The ingot was preheated to 900°F. for 12 hr. It was then placed on a steel bed in a horizontal position so that the longitudinal axis was level and parallel to the track of the motor-driven torch carrier. Two cuts were made, one 2 in. above the longitudinal axis and the other 2 in. below. The time required to make each cut was approximately 75 min. The cutting operation is shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The 4-in. thick slab was mmediately charged into a furnace standing at 1200F.

A reservoir mechanism of sulfur recovery by the Frasch process is presented. Improving the economic, of recovery appears to be largely a well, rather than a reservoir problem. A most important factor is the limitation of the lateral extraction of .sulfur about the wells due to the almost vertical .flow of the injected hot water. Model studies are described which confirin the mechanism of sulfur recovery by presently used methods. Studies on a five-spot system indicate improved econo171ics regarding recovery, recovery rate, therinal efficiency, and well spacing. INTRODUCTION Sulfur mining by the Frasch process is one of the most important methods of sulfur production. Developed by Herman Frasch in 1894, it enjoyed a rapid growth and presently supplies 40 per cent of the world's sulfur and about 80 per cent of the U. S. sulfur." The Frasch process of mining the underground native sulfur deposits involves melting the sulfur in place by introducing super-heated water into the sulfur bearing formations, and producing the sulfur as a liquid. Many problems are encountered in mining these native sulfur deposits, and sulfur production depends chiefly upon the nature of the sulfur deposit and the underground thermal efficiency of the heat transfer system. THE RECOVERY MECHANISM Sulfur is typically found in salt dome cap rock as crystal aggregates occurring within the cavities, seams, and pores of limestone and gypsum formations.' Sulfur-bearing limestone is typically cavernous, vugular, and fractured. Porosity averages about 20 per cent and sulfur saturation averages approximately 25 per cent by weight.1,15 Vhe sulfur bearing formations are very heterogeneous in nature and physical characteristics vary widely within small distances. Total cap rock thickness may vary from 50 to more than 1,000 ft, and net productive thicknesses from a few feet to a few hundred feet. In most cases the upper portion of the limestone formation is barren of sulfur, varying from 5 to 200 ft in thickness.1,15,33 The immediately overlying sediments and the underlying dense anhydrite formation provide permeability barriers to the flow of water from the cap rock section.'" Sulfur wells are drilled with conventional oilfield drilling rigs. Fig. 1 illustrates the casing program of a completed sulfur well. The cap rock sections are drilled with core bits and continuous core logs are recorded. After coring, the cap rock section is underreamed to a diameter of 9 7/8 in. The bottom of the 8-in. casing is welded closed and rests on the bottom of the drill hole, which extends through the cap rock to a few feet above the bottom of the sulfur-bearing formation. The 8-in. pipe contains 5 ft of 3/4-in. perforations on 6-in. centers and 15 ft of 1-in. perforations on 1-ft centers. The 20-ft perforated section is set opposite the lower 20 ft of the sulfur-bearing formation. The 4-in. sulfur pipe is set inside the 8-in. water line on a seat ring at the top of the 5-ft section of 3/4-in. perforations. The mining water, heated to about 330°F under a pressure of 250 psi, is forced down the annulus between the 8-in. and 441-1. pipes and through the 1-in. perforations to the sulfur-bearing formation. LIQUID metal solution calorimetry is a convenient method for determining the heats of formation of solid compounds. In this technique the heat of formation is the difference between the measured heat effects on dissolution of the compounds and of mechanical mixtures of the components in the liquid metal.' The heat of solution of the mechanical mixture may be calculated from the measured heat effect. At infinite dilution of the solutes, this heat of solution is equal to the sum of the heats of solution of the separate components. If the heat of solution of one of the components is known, the value for the other can be derived; if both are known, they may be used to check the accuracy of the calorimetric technique. The heats of formation of the tellurides of cadmium, indium, tin, and lead have recently been measured by metal solution alorimetr. The heats of solution of indium, tin, lead, and tellurium at infinite dilution in liquid bismuth at 623"K, calculated from the measured heat effects on solution of the mechanical mixtures, are in good agreement with the published values. The heats of solution of cadmium and of tellurium calculated from the measured heat effect on solution in bismuth at 623'K of mechanical mixtures of cadmium and tellurium, however, do not agree with values estimated from the literature. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE AND RESULTS The Heats of Solution of Indium, Tin, Lead, and Tellurium in Bismuth. The heat effects were measured when mechanical mixtures corresponding to the compounds In,Te, InTe, In2Te3, In2Te5, SnTe, and PbTe were dissolved in bismuth. The calorimetric procedure and the method of calculation have been described elsewhere.' The heats of solution of the mechanical mixtures were obtained by subtracting the change in heat content per gram-atom of the sample between the addition temperature (273°K) and the bath temperature (623"K), (H623°K - H273°K)S, from the measured heat effects. The calorimeter was calibrated with pure bismuth. The reported values of the measured heat effects are based on (HGoK - ^273oK)Bi = 4.96 kcal per g-atom.3 The measured heat effects are found to be linear functions of the solute concentrations of the bath in the dilute solution range. The values, extrapolated to infinite dilution, are listed in Table I, together with the heats of solution of the mechanical mixtures calculated using the published values of (H 623°K - H273°k)s for indium, tin, lead,3 and tellrium. All the error limits quoted in this work represent the spread of values obtained. The heats of solution in liquid bismuth at 623°K of mechanical mixtures of indium and tellurium in four different proportions were determined. Values of the heats of solution of the two components were then calculated from the resulting four simultaneous equations: The heats of solution at infinite dilution of tin and lead in liquid bismuth at 623°K were calculated from the heats of solution of the mechanical mixtures of tin and tellurium and of lead and tellurium using the heat of solution of tellurium calculated above. These values of the heats of solution are listed in Table I1 together with some published values for comparison.

PHYSICAL AND CLIMATIC DIVISIONS. PERU is divided into three regions-the coast, the sierra, or high mountainous region, and the a montana," or forest region of the Amazon basin. The Coast.-The coast is an arid region. No rain falls excepting in the extreme northern part, which borders the Gulf of Guayaquil. There is, however, a slight precipitation in the form of mist (garua), which occurs on the coast hills during the so-called winter months. The aridity of the coast is due principally to the antarctic or Humboldt ocean-current, which, being cold and having a temperature lower than that of the land, absorbs rather than produces vapors. The coast mists occur during the season when the land is relatively cold. Near the Gulf of Guayaquil the antarctic current diverges from the coast, so that in the Tumbes valley and adjacent country the conditions in the summer months are such as produce rains. In the remaining valleys of the coast, agriculture is made possible only by means of irrigation, and is accordingly very limited in extent, although rich and varied. In the northern and south-central portions of the coast, plains extend inland from the sea, while in the southern part there is a coastal plain separated from the Pacific by a range of coast hills. Between the northern and south-central plains, as well as between the south-central and southern, the foothills of the sierra descend to the seacoast. The Sierra.-The sierra embraces the high land dominated by the lofty cordilleras of the Andes. In the southern part of Peru there are two cordilleras, the western and the eastern, which enter from Chile and Bolivia respectively, and inclose between them the Titicaca Lake basin. To the north of Lake Titicaca these cordilleras unite in the knot of Vilcanota, south of Cuzco. From this knot three cordilleras, known as the western, the central, and the eastern, extend to the northward, reuniting in the

R. F. WOOD,* Sandusky, Ohio.-I made a few tests of gun-metal specimens, after I noticed the results on quenching -reported by the Bureau of Standards. The data of one such test are given herewith. The bars were heat treated and quenched before they were machined, and in all cases they were brought up to 700° or 800°. They became extremely brittle,, showed almost no elongation, except such as was caused by the failure of the pieces to fit together after they were pulled, and the tensile stength was reduced from around 35,000 to about 13,000 lb. per sq. in. In addition, the weakening effect of the quenching seemed to be almost as marked when the bar was allowed to slowly air-cool from red to black, and then quenched, as it was by quenching directly from the red heat. Test Bars.-Rough size, 9/16 in. diam. over test section, grips 13/16 in. diam. Cast two in a flask, one on each side of a block 8 by 4 by 1 in. and fin-gated thereto from the grips but not from the test section. Poured with flask in inclined position, with gate to lower end of block and riser from upper end of each test bar. Bars were machined to ½ in. over the test section, after heat treatment. Casting the Bars.-Charge of 1500 lb. consisting of 400 lb. of new metals and 1100 lb. of G turnings and scrap was melted in open-flame oil furnaces and then poured into a 1-ton ladle. From the ladle 150 lb. was poured into a preheated No. 50 crucible, land from this the flasks of test bars were poured. The six flasks are indicated below by the numbers 1 to 6 and the bars in each flask by the letters a and b, thus 4a and 4h, for instance, were the two bars in flask No. 4.

Following this established theory, in 1669 Jean Picard, Marquis Malvasia and others crossed silken fibers in the mutual focus of their astronomical instruments." If by this Mr. Scott means that Huygens and Picard first devised and applied cross-hairs to the focus of the telescope, the writer cannot agree with him. ESTIMATED United States crude-oil production during 1943 established a new annual peak of 1,500,000,000 barrels, a daily average of 4,118,000 barrels. This would be an increase of 315,000 barrels per day, or 8 per cent over 1942 and 7 per cent over 1941, the previous peak. During the first ten months of the year, production jumped from 3,782,000 barrels per day in January to 4,400,000 in October. Available data for the last two months of the year indicate a leveling off of this trend, with daily rates slightly above 4,400,000 barrels.

LABOR. conditions have finally caused rock-drilling machines to supplant hand drillers in the Japanese mining industry, and have encouraged this study. During a period of three years 25,000 tests were made on 67 different American, Japanese, and European rock drills, using, respectively, the Paynter testing machine, and drilling in granite and limestone. Recorded were: air consumption, speed of rotation, torque of rotation, foot-pounds of striking energy, air pressures, input horsepowers, and speed of rock penetration. The author expresses his views on the interrelation of these factors and offers theoretical support, as well, by formulas based upon the mechanics of impact. He discusses the different designs of the valves, cylinders, piston hammers and rotation devices involved in the different types of rock drills, with respect to their merits and defects and offers conclusions about the factors that should be considered in the new design of a superior rock drill. The author's mathematical demonstrations and arguments for a value of "best feed clearance" of the drill bit from the rock are based upon the hand-operated screw-fed type of hammer drill. Automatic feeds have not been considered in this paper except for the tests on one drifter with air feed, 10 air-feed stopers, and some hand-held blockholers. The following classes of drills, with one of each model, size, or type, were tested: 23 heavy drifters, 34 light drifters and hand-held drills, and 10 stopers. The Cordero mine is located in the Nevada portion of the Opalite Mining district that straddles the Oregon-Nevada state boundary. The mercury deposits of the district occur along the margins of the broad east-west graben valley of McDermitt Creek. The only other major producers, the Opalite and Bretz mines, on the northern margin of the graben have thus far exploited only shallow deposits within 100 feet of the surface. Through December 1965, Cordero has produced 94,680 flasks of mercury, the most of which came from the large underground cinnabar deposit. Nearly all of the mercury ore deposits in this district have been found in Miocene rhyolitic intrusives, flows, tuffs, and lake beds. These rhyolites have been argillically altered at depth and extensively silicified at or near the surface. These silicified areas or "opalite" masses were the original cinnabar-bearing outcrops.

L. S. Darken—Laboratory investigation of deoxidizing and other steelmaking reactions is usually centered, at least first, on the determination of the equilibrium or equilibria involved. This seems a reasonable procedure since equilibrium, if attained, depends only on composition, temperature, and pressure; hence conclusions derived from data on small experimental quantities are applicable to a heat of steel providing eauilibrium is attained in both cases. A knowledge of equilibrium serves as a useful framework even though we may know that practical conditions do not correspond to complete equilibrium. On the other hand, nonequilibrium or rate phenomena depend on a wider variety of conditions and are more difficult to interpret; conclusions applicable to laboratory conditions may or may not apply to larger scale phenomena. Hence the attainment or nonattainment of true equilibrium in the experiments here reported is of critical importance in evaluating their significance. Since some of the statements in this paper and in the closely related preceding one (on aluminum deoxidation) imply some doubt on this matter, I should first like to ask the authors whether their conditions are intended and believed to represent equilibrium. I should like to point out three considerations which seem to cast considerable doubt on the achievement of equilibrium, at least of the particular equilibrium under consideration. 1. In the experiments on manganese deoxidation the authors point out that they could not maintain the manganese-oxide slag on top of the metal in their rotating crucible, and hence they substantially dispensed with this slag. This leads to serious trouble in the interpretation of the results, for any equilibrium is, of course, a particular specific equilibrium—in this case Mn + O = MnO The experimental deletion of the upper layer of manganese oxide means that if equilibrium is attained at all it is attained between the metal and the MnO which has soaked into or adhered to the crucible (under the metal) and has dissolved substantial amounts of the crucible material including impurities. These impurities may constitute a significant portion of the slag by virtue of the small total amount of slag, even though the crucible is relatively pure. Hence there would seem to be a strong presumption that the equilibrium (if attained) involves not a pure MnO (or MnO — FeO) slag but one saturated with alumina and containing perhaps considerable impurities which substantially lower the concentration and activity of MnO, causing the above reaction to proceed to the right further than it would in the absence of alumina and impurities. Hence it is not surprising that manganese here appears as a better deoxidizer than found by other investigators. The present results may represent equilibrium with a slag of unknown composition which seems unlikely to be particularly related to plant experience. 2. The curves representing the observed silicon deoxidation (figs. 3, 4, and 5) are all drawn with a discontinuity in slope at about 0.02 pct oxygen. This point is interpreted as corresponding to the three-phase equilibrium, metal, slag, solid silica. The type of construction shown in these figures (though apparently fitting the data) is contrary to a fundamental principle of heterogeneous equilibrium as pertains to the construction of phase diagrams. According to this principle, the two solubility curves (each of the two portions of the curves in figs. 3, 4, and 5) must intersect in such manner that their (metastable) extensions must lie outside the homogeneous field rather than inside as in these figures. In other words, the "point" in these curves should be aimed in the opposite direction, if it is to be interpreted as corresponding to the three-phase equilibrium. The construction adopted is in violation of the second law of thermodynamics. This matter is discussed in detail in several texts and also by Lipson and Wilson.&apos;" The same criticism applies to the later figures representing conditions for manganese additions. The occurrence of this discontinuity or break at 0.02 pct oxygen casts further doubt on its interpretation. The earlier investigation of this system by Korber and Oelsen is in substantial agreement with the several recent findings of Chipman and coworkers that the oxygen content of iron in equilibrium with silica and silica-saturated iron oxide slag is about one third to one half that (0.24 pct at 1600") of iron saturated with pure iron oxide; thus there seems reliable evidence that iron saturated with silica and iron silicate slag at 1600" contains about 0.1 pct oxygen, or certainly much more than the 0.02 pct proposed in this paper. 3. In the quarternary system iron-silicon-manganese-oxygen one of the equilibria involved may be written 2 Mn + SiO2 (solid) = 2 MnO <slag> + Si The activity of SiO, is constant (if equilibrium is attained) by virtue of its presence as a substantially pure solid. At not too low metallic manganese content, the activity of MnO in the slag is constant by virtue of the fact that the slag is substantially pure manganese silicate saturated with silica and hence of constant composition. Thus the equilibrium constant for the above reaction is asi/a2Mn. Barring unanticipated large changes in the activity coefficients, the equilibrium constant may be adequately approximated for the composition range covered as [% Si]/[% Mn]2. Thus a plot of log [% Mn] against log [% Si] would be expected to be linear with a slope of one half as found by Kijrber and Oelsen. In the present investigation the slope (shown in fig. 15) is found to be one. It is difficult to believe that this finding represents a correct equilibrium determination, since it is at odds both with prior experimental investigation and with. theory. In view of the above points it seems that, although this paper reports many interesting findings, there is room for considerable skepticism as to the attainment of equilibrium and as to the conclusions drawn. Since 1904, when exploration of the Mayari deposits of iron ore in northeastern Cuba was undertaken, there llas been increasing interest in these ores. With nickel and chromium present, also titanium in sufficient quantities to attract attention, as well as extremely low phosphorus and sulfur contents, the iron founder is naturally interested in the utilization of RInpari ore for pig iron for the better grades of finishrtl iron products. Discussion of the paper of E. C. HARDER, presented at the Pittsburgh meeting, October, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 94, October, 1914, pp. 2573 to 2586. I. C. WHITE, Morgantown, W. Va.-I have seen some of the great iron-ore deposits described in this paper. -One of these in the State of Minas Geraes appears to be an immense mountain of iron ore about 2,000 ft. in height. All over its surface from bottom to top may be seen large masses of rich iron ore, varying in weight from a few pounds to several tons, and from all that one can judge without exploitation, the quantity of available ore is certainly very large in this particular mountain. Whether it will prove a mere surface deposit or shell, like the famous Iron Mountain of Missouri, is for future exploration to determine. The question of transportation is the main factor in determining the availability for exportation of these Brazilian iron ores. There is no coal in Brazil that can be manufactured into coke without expensive previous treatment, since the best of the raw coal in the States of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catharina, and Parana, contains about 35 per cent. of ash, of which about 6 per cent. is sulphur, and coal of this composition cannot be utilized in iron smelting without purification. When I was chief of the Brazilian Coal Commission in 1904 to 1906, I had a cargo of this coal shipped to Balk, Germany, and treated in the great coal-testing plant of the Humboldt Engineering Works, located just across the Rhine from Cologne. It was found that by crushing and washing the Brazilian coal, it yielded 33 per cent. of briquetting coal, containing only 10 to 12 per cent. of ash (of which 1 per cent. was sulphur), and 42 per cent. of slack coal, with 25 per cent. of ash and low in sulphur, so that about 33 per cent. of the Brazilian coal could be converted into coke of fair quality, as shown by the following average of three analyses, using air-dried coal, of briquets made from the Barro Branco coal bed, State of Santa Catharina: Moisture 1.56 Volatile matter 31.66 Fixed carbon 56.73 Ash : 10.05 Total 100.00 Sulphur 1.34 Phosphorus 0.003 B.t.u 13,395
