THE writer has carried on experimental work for several years with respect to the simultaneous dissolution of gold by cyanide and the adsorption of the dissolved gold on activated charcoal in ore pulps, fol-lowed by the recovery of the charcoal by flotation. The results of this experimental work have been sufficiently encour-aging to suggest a new process based on the principle of simultaneous dissolution and adsorption of gold, applicable to certain ores and tailings that cannot be treated to advantage by countercurrent decantation or filtration. Applications for patents have been filed and The Dorr Company, Inc. has the exclusive right to license the use of the process. The purpose of this paper is to describe such a process, state its pos-sible advantages and immediate field, and give some results obtained on a laboratory scale.

Gold was discovered at the Haile mine in Lancaster County, South Carolina, in 1827 or 1828, and since that time the mine has been worked intermittently by both open-pit and underground methods until its forced closure in 1942 by World War II. Production figures are incomplete, especially for the early years, but the total gold produced is estimated to have been greater than 200,000 oz. Thus, the Haile mine has been the most productive gold mine in the eastern United States. The upper, residually enriched ores were relatively rich, but the bulk of the production has come from the mining of lower grade ores. General Geology The Haile mine is located in late Precambrian or early Paleozoic rocks of the Carolina slate belt at the edge of the Atlantic Coastal Plain [(Fig. 1)]. The metamorphic grade is lower greenschist facies and the rocks have been folded into a sequence of northeast-trending isoclinal folds. The gold is associated with siliceous, pyritic, and kaolinized felsic pyroclastic and tuffaceous rocks in an interbedded volcanic and volcanoclastic sequence of felsic to mafic tuffaceous rocks and argillaceous sediments [(Fig. 2)]. The ore bodies occur in two northeast trending zones approximately 500 m apart; each zone is 30-70 m wide and 600 m or more in length, with possible extensions to the east beneath the Coastal Plain sediments. Mineralogy. Gold in the Haile mine is always associated with siliceous and/or pyritic ores. The gold occurs in at least three states: As native gold as originally deposited; as residual gold derived from the breakdown of pyrite; and as gold included in pyrite. Major associated minerals in addition to quartz and pyrite are kaolinite, sericite, and iron oxides. Minor molybdenite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, copper sulfides, sphalerite, rutile, and topaz are also present. Petrology. The gold-bearing ore zones vary from highly siliceous rocks to pyritic massive sulfide lenses. This variation is most easily seen today along strike from the Haile pit to the Red Hill pit. Ore grade material still exposed in the wall of the Haile pit consists of a highly siliceous and very thinly bedded rock containing minor pyrite. Along strike, the character of the mineralization changes to pyritic massive sulfide lenses occurring interbedded with siliceous horizons at the Red Hill pit. The siliceous rocks vary from the thinly-bedded material as just described from the Haile pit to silicified fragmental-appearing rocks to totally recrystallized cherty rocks lacking any recognizable primary features. Scattered, apparently at random, throughout the very thinly-bedded and very fine-grained ore face of the Haile pit are seemingly anomalous silica-rich clasts or concretions up to 5 cm in diameter which will be discussed later in this paper. Alteration. One of the most striking features of the Haile deposit is the alteration mineral assemblage which is intimately associated with the siliceous and pyritic ores. This altered material has been intersected in drill core at depths greatly exceeding the modern weathering profile and is, therefore, of hydrothermal origin rather than from supergene processes. This "sericite," actually a fine-grained mixture of sericite, kaolinite, and quartz, can be shown to stratigraphically underlie the gold- quartz-pyrite zone, and is well exposed in the open pit just southeast of the Haile and Bumalo pits. Relict textures indicate that this highly altered material was originally a felsic ash flow. Other similar alteration zones have been found in outcrop and drill core underlying the remaining ore bodies. Thus each of the mineralized zones consists of two parts: A siliceous and/or pyritic gold-bearing ore zone which is stratigraphically underlain by a zone of high alumina minerals, in this case sericite and kaolinite along with variable amounts of quartz. A green chrome mica, presumably fuchsite, is present in trace amounts in the high alumina zone. Genesis An adequate model to explain the origin and distribution of the gold deposits in the Carolina slate belt is presently lacking. Worthington and Kiff1 suggested a volcanogenic origin for certain gold deposits in the North Carolina slate belt from the waning exhalations of felsic volcanic piles. They also pointed out that such an origin has similarities to many epithermal precious metal deposits located in more recent volcanic piles in the western United States. A further key to the understanding of the genesis of the gold mineralization at the Haile mine is the close association of the mineralization in siliceous and sulfidic horizons to the genetically related and stratigraphically underlying high alumina alteration. Such high-alumina alteration is common around felsic volcanic centers in the Carolina slate belt and the mineralogy as seen today consists of some combination of kaolinite, sericite, pyrophyllite, kyanite, andalusite or sillimanite depending on the local prevailing grade of metamorphism. Accompanying the high-alumina alteration are large quantities of pyrite and iron-oxide minerals as well as characteristic minor accessory minerals often including base metal sulfides, fluorine-bearing minerals (topaz, fluorite, apatite), titanium-bearing minerals (ilmenite, rutile),

Recent publicationsl.2 establishing the presence of cross-slip in strained metallic single crystals oriented wholly within the area of single slip as predicted from the generalizations of Taylor and Elam3 described these markings as they appeared during the initial stages of the deformation process. At that time, the plane having a common glide direction with the primary slipping plane was reported as the cross-slip plane although the specific direction was not confirmed. Consequently, in continuation of the research, it seemed advisable to investigate the micro-graphic appearance of cross-slip together with the Laue back-reflection X ray analysis and stress-strain data during the later stages of the deformation process. Accordingly, a single crystal of brass (72.75 pct Cu, 0.01 pct Fe, 0.01 pct Pb, 27.23 pct Zn) was polished mechanically and repolished electrolytically after the manner described in the earlier paper.' Three pairs of flat surfaces, parallel to the specimen axis, and (1) perpendicular to the plane containing the pole of the primary glide plane and the specimen axis, (2) perpendicular to the plane containing the pole of the cross-slip plane and the specimen axis, and (3) perpendicular to the plane containing the slip direction and the specimen axis, were polished mechanically and repolished electrolytically, resulting in a final minimum gauge diameter of 0.4864 in. in a gauge length of 3.36 in. The specimen was elongated in tension and load-extension readings were taken following the method described in the initial investigation.' Observed reorientations were obtained from a series of Laue back-reflection photograms at the center and ends of the gauge length and at various positions around the circumference of the specimen. These were interpreted after the manner of A. B. Greninger.4 Cross-slip (Fig 1 and 2) was found with the first appearance of the primary slip clusters and usually joined members of these clusters. In addition, a third set of entirely different markings (Fig 3) could be noted. The displacement of this third set by the primary slip lines was measured as 8300 at. diam (3.04 microns). Since the specimen was carefully observed at high magnifications before any deformation and no markings of any type could be noted, it would appear that this third set was formed during the deformation process prior to the initiation of classical primary slip. Additional extensions produced no unusual change in the appearance of either cross-slip or the third set of markings. The number of lines increased with increasing elongation and appeared, generally, in areas where earlier markings were present. The continuity of the clusters of cross-slip lines in Fig 4, 5 and 6 illustrates that they are neither noticeably displaced by nor do they displace the primary lines at this stage. In Fig 7, cross-slip appears in a long narrow localized band approximately 45 degrees from the stress axis. This somewhat resembles a twin band except for the lack of a sharp boundary. After a shear of 0.257, suffcient additional glide occurred on the cross-slip plane to displace the primary slip lines (Fig 8). Generally, where a large number of cross-slip lines could be observed in an area on one flat surface, few cross-slip lines appeared on the diametrically opposite position on the parallel flat (Fig 9). These, of course, were not matched observations on the same glide ellipses. It was extremely difficult to make such comparisons. The third set of markings (Fig 10) was extensively displaced by glide on the primary slip planes. A plot of the width of primary slip clusters versus their displacement of the third set of lines is shown in Fig 11. The slope and the linearity of the plot suggest that each primary glide plane slips to a constant maximum value of shear before further slip is transferred to another plane. A shear value of 0.28 was determined in this case. Heidenreich5 has presented a similar schematic representation of glide for aluminum. After the specimen had attained an elongation of 51.8 pct, corresponding to a shear of 0.973, cross-slip appeared very prominently in certain areas as shown in Fig 12, yet at diametrically opposite positions very little cross-slip could be noted, Fig 13. Classical conjugate slip was found at this advanced stage in the deformation, Fig 14, which corresponds to the axial location shown at 12 in Fig 15. It should be noted that cross-slip occurs within the conjugate slip clusters and on the same plane as the cross-slip associated with the closely spaced primary lines which constitute a background in less distinct focus. THE founding of the American Institute of Mining Engineers in 1871 came at an unusually significant moment in the life of our country. The industrial revolution, in which mineral production played a major role, was just getting underway. The iron industry, established several decades earlier, was reaching sizable proportions. In 1871 pig-iron production was approaching 2 million tons, and the industry had spread as far west as Missouri and Wisconsin. The chief sources of iron ore were Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and Michigan. The age of steel was in its infancy; production had not yet reached 100,000 tons per annum. The gold rush to California two decades earlier and the discovery of other gold and silver bonanzas in the West paved the way for the transcontinental railways, which were then being built and which contributed much to the subsequent development of the great copper, lead, and zinc districts of the Rocky Mountain area. Regular production of copper in the Michigan peninsula and of lead in Missouri and the upper Mississippi region had been established for many years but on a scale dwarfed by the quantities later required as technical progress, invention and enterprise made possible the rapid expansion of industry. The paper seeks to present the results of experimentation in room and pillar stopes with different ground conditions to determine the safe working span. In the experimental stopes, ground movement was monitored with gradual widening of the room span. The field measurements included closure between the stope walls and the extent of ground movement in the hangwall using borehole extensometers. hock bolting was used as an exclusive support system which enabled introduction of scrapers for improving productivity. In one nine, phosphate bed, 3 to 3.5 m thick dipping at 45O and overlaid by weak laminated shale, was worked at shallow depth of cover. h the experimental panel, five s topes were worked with spans varying from 5.5 to 7 m. In the second mine, the chalcopyrite orebody up to 6 m in thickness dipping at 25 - 30" was worked at a depth of 1100 m. The hangwall consisted of fairly competent schistose rocks and therefore 10 to 15 m wide spans could be experimented. The field measurements confirmed that in the phosphate mine with weak shale roof, 7 m span could be safely worked with subsequent caving of the bolted roof. In the copper mine, 15 m span could be worked and the stopes required subsequent backfilling for better ground control.

During July and August, 1899, the writer took advantage of an opportunity of going to Shansi to gather some information concerning the geology and value of the already famous coalfields of that province. The long journey, mainly on slow river-boats, and the limited time at command, allowed only about ten days of work to be done in the coal-fields around Tsê Chou. The geologic structure and the rock-formations were found to be simple and quite regular, so that in that time the accompanying sketch-map (Pig. 1) was made, and a fairly good idea of the distribution of the coal and general geologic features was obtained. The map was made by measuring a base-line about three-quarters of a mile long, triangulating for principal points over the field, and filling in the details by rapid sketches. The few elevations marked on the map were taken with an aneroid barometer. Only a few of the great number of towns and villages that are within this densely populated area are shown; and the coal-mines indicated are not the only ones within the area, but the ones where most of the following information about the coal was obtained. The value of this coal-field was first clearly set before the scientific and commercial world by Baron von Richthofen,* who made a geologic reconnaissance of Shansi in 1870. Since that time the hostile attitude of the Chinese government and people towards foreigners and their enterprises has kept the coal-fields from being developed. But the last few years of rapid change in the conditions of China have at last apparently opened a way for the exploitation of this coal-field. At present it is impossible to estimate closely the amount of oil obtainable from a given area of land. However, after the completion of a few properly distributed prospect wells, one can calculate the approximate yield of the sands penetrated, with a probable error of say 50 per cent. Even rough predictions of this kind are of value in large operations. Without wells upon it, one can never be absolutely certain that an area will produce any oil whatever, and one can only indulge in wild guesses of the probable productive area, before the geological structure has been carefully contoured and the top of the basal water plotted on a map. This requires wells. At times it is desirable to form an idea of the possible yield of oil in advance of drilling, as in cases where the price asked for undeveloped land seems too high, but where the probability of finding oil is furnished by neighboring development, supported by the geology. In such cases the most one can do is to make an estimate of possible maximum yield, which may of course far exceed results, and which is of use mainly in the prevention of excessive initial investment. The method is very significant in a general way, as in regions like the Bighorn Basin, Wyoming, where the productive sands in the Cretaceous shale are so few and so thin and fine that they cannot develop very great production, although the high quality of the oil probably will counterbalance this defect sufficiently to give local profit in favorable areas. Reservoir Capacity of Sands.—The porosity of a stratum is the measure of its maximum reservoir capacity for liquids and gases. The porosity may be determined experimentally and must be used in connection with the total volume of the sand.

The solid solubility of lithium in aluminum was determined by two independent techniques, electrical resistivity and microhardness, and the results are in close agreement. The solubility limits X-ray diffraction studies of the intermetallic compound LiAl indicate that its composition is nearly independent of temperature when in equilibrium with the terminal solid solution of aluminum. THE investigation of the aluminum-rich portion of the aluminum-lithium system at the Savannah River Laboratory was prompted by the observation that over-aged alloys consistently differed from the equilibrium states predicted by the latest published diagrams. Chemical analyses of these alloys showed their impurity contents to be quite low; therefore, the results obtained should have very nearly coincided with true equilibrium. A survey of the literature disclosed that previous studies had been made with metallographicig or electrical resistivity methods,4'5 but that agreement between results and technique was poor as evidenced in Fig. 1, which also includes the present results for comparison. The discrepancies have been attributed to impurities,3 and this is undoubtedly true in the early work.1'4'5 The latest Studies,''~ conducted with starting materials of higher purity, employed metallographic analysis, a technique that is quite sensitive to local homogeneity and depends strongly on subjective interpretation. In the present work the problem of defining solubility limits was approached in two ways. The first measured a physical property, electrical resistivity, at the equilibrium temperature. The second, a micro-hardness characterization of a diffusion zone, is a room temperature evaluation of a mechanical property under conditions removed from equilibrium. A close correlation between two such basically different approaches would strongly justify confidence in the results. The existence of phosphate of lime within the State of Florida has been known for over a decade; but until the spring of 1887, the extent and value of its deposit.;, possibly with one exception, were unsuspected. In that year Col. T. S. Moorehead, induced by a statement made by Mr. J. F. Le Baron, examined the gravels of the Peace river, recognized the importance of the deposits, acquired such tracts as were regarded as desirable, and established the pebble-phosphate industry, making his first shipment in May, 1888, to the Scott Manufacturing Company, of Atlanta, Ga. The establishment of the pebble-phosphate industry upon Peace river was followed, a year later, by the discovery in Marion county of an entirely different class of phosphate, now commonly known as hard-rock phosphate. This discovery was made early in June, 1889, by Mr. Albertus Voght, in a well which he was sinking upon his place near the site of the present town of Donnellon, about 20 miles southwest of Ocala. To it, more than to any other cause, is due the rapid and remarkable development of the present great industry of the State. It was, however, Mr. John F. Dunn, of Ocala, who turned to advantage the accidental discovery of Mr. Voght. After acquiring a knowledge as to the chemical composition and value of the material, Mr. Dunn and hid associates purchased several thousand acres of land and organized the Dunnellon Phosphate Company for active operations. From Dunnellon as a center, prospecting rapidly extended in all directions, until at the present day important mines have been opened over a well-defined tract more than 200 miles long and about 6 miles wide. THE process of recrystallization has not as yet been explained satis-factorily. Some definite conclusions could be drawn from recent investi-gations, such as, for example, that recrystallization is a process of nucleus formation and crystal growth 1and that the orientations of the nuclei correspond to some fragments of the original crystals, which have been considerably distorted during deformation.2 There are, however, a number of metals and alloys crystallizing in the face-centered cubic system, which form a particularly simple orientation if recrystallized as a sheet.3 Such a sheet is almost a single crystal with the cubic axes parallel to the rolling, transverse, and normal directions of the sheet. This preferred cubic or (100) orientation of the recrystallized sheet has been considered to be very different from the rolling structure of the same metals,4 but there are two reasons why this last supposition remains open to controversial discussion. The first reason is academic: In practically all cases except the one mentioned above, close correlations and similarities between rolling and annealing orientations have been observed; for instance, in iron and steel sheet.6 Secondly, no deformed metal actually forms a-simple orientation. In any thoroughly investigated case a number of different orientations and considerable scattering or deviations from the ideal orientations have been found., It is generally true that investigations on single crystals have shown that a definite orientation is approached in stretching or in compression of an originally undisturbed crystal.7 In the special cases, however, where the initial orientation was close to an important crystallographic direction that differed from the final "ideal" orientation, the resulting orientation changed very little by deformation, staying somewhere in the vicinity of the initial orientation." In 1882, The Arizona Copper Co., Ltd., acquired producing copper mines at Metcalf and Morenci (locally called Longfellow). Metcalf is situated a distance of 7 miles, and Morenci a distance of 6 miles from the general office of the company at Clifton, Ariz. A reduction works with five blast furnaces was built in the center of the town of Clifton in 1884 and operated until January, 1914. Concentration of oxidized ores was begun in 1890-1891, in a mill built adjoining the smelter, and id October, 1893, a leaching process was started for treating tailings from the oxide mill. A sulphide concentrator with 300 tons capacity was built at Clifton and started treating chalcocite ores in July, 1896. This was the first mill to treat low-grade copper-siilphide ores successfully. Another concentration mill for sulphide ores was erected at Morenci in 1900. The sulphide mills are now being remodeled to treat ores by concentration and flotation, with a capacity of 4,000 tons at Morenci and 500 tons at Clifton. The leaching plant has not been running since September, 1914. ZAY JEFFRIES (author's reply to discussion *).-Messrs. Merica's and Humfrey's criticisms of some of my conclusions are rendered in the true scientific spirit by means of which differences of opinion are gradually smoothed out and all participants are benefited. It is true that the statement of generalizations on such a complex subject is hazardous, but I shall endeavor to point out the explanations for the discrepancies noted. Owing to the fact that I am now submitting a long paper on the same general subject to the Institute, my present remarks will be brief. Dr. Meric&s Assumptions' I agree with No. 1 and No. 2, with the modification that the A (amorphous) metal between grains of annealed metal has substantially the same properties as that at slip planes in deformed metal, but the two have different arrangements with reference to C (crystalline) metal and they may be in different conditions as regards internal stress, thickness, and nature of contact with C metal. Assumption 3.-I believe Fig. 1 is wrong. I know of no evidence to substantiate the curves. I believe cc (elongation of C phase) = 0 (approximately) at all temperatures and ?A (elongation of A phase) has finite values at elevated temperatures only; but these play no important direct role in the ordinary deformation of metals at low temperatures. I believe Ec (elastic limit of C phase) = Tc (tensile strength of C phase) because as soon as C metal begins to deform permanently it would rupture were it not for the A metal generated by its breakdown. We know that Ec = Tc in brittle crystals and a crystal cannot be permanently deformed without generation of A metal. Therefore Dr. Merica's

INTRODUCTION This paper deals with the development of the sublevel open stoping (SLOS) method in lead orebodies at the Isa Mine of Mount Isa Mines Limited, during the last ten years. Open stoping in different forms has been used at the Isa Mine for many years. Prior to the period under review, stopes were small, pillars were not always recovered, and scrapers extracted the ore. By the end of the sixties, the use of load-haul-dump units was becoming more widespread. Wagner ST5's were the mucking units for the lead cut and fill stopes. Some of the open stopes in 5 orebody above 13 level had 100 kW slushers, but the more southerly stopes were the sites for the introduction of diesel front-end loaders for extraction. In the early seventies, new methods were used in the block of six stopes in 2 and 5 orebodies between 8 level and 13 level and a trial stoping project was undertaken in 7 orebody between 11 level and 13 level to determine possible stope dimensions for the extraction of the Racecourse orebodies below 13 level. By the mid-19701s, stoping was well underway in 5, 7 and 8 orebodies between 13 level and 15 level, using the 'triplet' system, incorporating cemented hydraulic fill to allow greater pillar recovery. As the eighties were entered, development of the Racecourse orebodies below 15 level commenced, as did preparations for 1 orebody in the upper levels of the north end of the mine. In both cases, the pillar recovery method has been changed to reduce the amount of cemented fill required for pillar recovery. GEOLOGY Most of the lead orebodies at Isa Mine lie chiefly to the north of the central shaft complex. They are bedded sulphide deposits in a host rock called Urquhart Shale, which dips at roughly 650 to the west. The main minerals are galena and sphalerite, with the silver mineral, freibergite, being contained in the galena. To the hangingwall of the sequence are the Black Star orebodies (1, 2 and 5) which are relatively wide, pyritic and with low to above average grade lead. The Racecourse orebodies (6 to 16) lie to the footwall, and have a large variation in width, low to high grade lead, and gradation in the lead to zinc ratio from north to south. Stope outlines are often determined by economic or engineering considerations rather than geological. The published extraction reserves are 56 million tonnes of primary ore, containing 150 grams of silver per tonne, 6.4% lead and 6.5% zinc. Traditionally, it has been regarded as lead ore, although the dominant revenue earner varies from time to time. In the Black Star orebodies, the ore and hangingwalls are more competent and open stoping has long been used. The major Racecourse orebodies which have been open stoped are 7 and 8 orebodies. This has been where the orebodies are wider (to the south) and where hangingwall conditions allow. This latter aspect has been greatly influenced by the presence of 'silica dolomite1. This tough, relatively homogeneous, non-bedded rock is, in fact, the host rock for the copper mineralisation at Mount Isa, and provides a competent hangingwall for some of the lead stopes. While the shale's bedding and jointing has a major influence on the ground conditions, there is a major fault system which causes local problems. The principal virgin stress direction is perpendicular to the bedding, but the local stress situation is complicated because of shielding by filled stopes in the hangingwall copper orebodies and because of the interaction between orebodies being extracted to the footwall. Most development on strike is mined with a 'shanty-back’, with the back being as close to normal to the bedding as possible. This is near parallel to most jointing and the principal stress direction. Figure 1 is a plan view of 14 level north, which provides a representative horizontal section through the orebodies. A typical cross section is shown in Figure 2. The narrow, parallel footwall orebodies can be seen to differ from the wider hangingwall orebodies.

The phenomenon of recovery of cold-worked metals is interesting not only because of its practical importance but also because of its fundamental significance in solid state reactions. Although extensive investigations1,2 have already been made in an attempt to discover the mechanics of the recovery process, many of the observations have not yet been satisfactorily correlated to provide a completely consistent model for the process. The wide differences in the recovery rates of various properties can be cited as a typical example of one of the difficulties that are encountered. Frequently, for example, the electrical resistance will have almost completely recovered before any recovery in tensile strength can be detected. Of course, such differences in the recovery rates of different properties might be explained by assuming that each property is a unique function of the work-hardened state, and consequently each property exhibits its own unique recovery rate. The assumption that different properties are uniquely related to the work-hardened state cannot be denied. On the other hand, the properties that recover at different rates often exhibit more or less parallel changes upon work-hardening. This suggests that the microstructural changes attending recovery are not exactly the reverse of the changes attending work-hardening. Several types of imperfections must be postulated in order to account for this apparent anomaly. The different recovery rates for various properties, then, are due to the different recovery rales of the type of imperfection to which each property is most sensitive as well as the unique dependence of each property on the cold- worked state. This concept assumes that a simple model of the work-hardened state consisting only of one type of imperfection, such as Taylor's type of dislocation patterns, is inadequate to cope with the diversified phenomena attending work-hardening and recovery. Although current models for the work-hardened state are not useful for describing all aspects of the recovery process, the general trends of the recovery of each postulated type of imperfection as a function of time and temperature should be at least qualitatively deducible from the rather well developed laws of kinetics of reactions in the solid state. Consequently, recovery data might prove useful for elucidating some aspects of the complexities of the work-hardened state of metals. A preliminary attempt to study work-hardening by investigating recovery rates of cold-worked metals is outlined in the following pages of this report. Experimental Procedure Many properties recover when cold-worked metals are annealed below their recrystallization temperature. Therefore, electrical resistivity, thermal electromotive force, X ray diffraction line widths, X ray diffraction line intensities, elastic spring back, density and other physical and chemical properties have been used to study the recovery process. Major interest, however, has generally been directed toward the recovery of the mechanical properties such as hardness, yield strength, and tensile strength. But a search of the literature suggests that the effect of recovery on the true stress-true strain curve has been neglected, in spite of the current recognition of the fundamental importance of such an investigation. An investigation on the effect of recovery treatment on the true stress-true strain curves in tension, therefore, was undertaken in the present study. Commercially pure aluminum (99. + pet Al) in the form of 0.100 in. thick rolled sheet of 2S-O aluminum alloy was selected as the material for this investigation because rather extensive correlatable data are already available on the recovery of some of its properties. Tensile specimens having a 6 in. long gauge section and a uniform reduced section width of 0.500 in. were machined from the sheet in accordance with a design that has previously been reported.3 All specimens were selected with their axes aligned in the rolling direction. In order to eliminate the effects of previous work-hardening and the effects of machining, the specimens were annealed for 15 min. at 750°F before testing. During tensile testing the loads were measured by means of a proving ring (sensitive to 1/2 lb) in series with the specimen.4 Strains were determined from the extension of a rack and pinion strain gauge sensitive to a strain of + 0.0001. (written discussion*).There is one feature of the fire-refining of electrolytic copper which I believe should be mentioned when the relation of oxygen content to the "pitch" or "set" of refined copper is under discussion; that is, the segregation of impurities. Variation of "pitch" or "set" is frequently noted in castings of different shapes, cast at the same time from the same furnace, though the oxygen content remains identical. For instance, it is possible to cast two wire-bars in the same shaped molds from the same ladleful of copper, the one 2 in. thick showing a good level set, the other, 4 in. thick, being overpoled. Also, when two bars are cast of the same weight and at the same time from the same furnace, one bar in a copper mold at the proper temperature, the other in a mold that has been allowed to get overheated, the bar in the hot mold will show

An insight into the mechanism of electrocrystallization of copper in simulated commercial acid electrolytes has been surmised from scanning electron microscope analysis of laboratory prepared specimens. The growth takes place in three overlapping stages. In he first, lasting approximately one hour at 200 amps/sq m, a propensity to epitaxial growth is observed. During the second stage a preferred orientation developed. The crystallography of the deposit showed a strong preferred orientation with the [111] direction normal to the surface. Triangular pyramids with (111) faces and (111) texture is a common result. In the third stage, occuring at longer deposition times, side growth, dendrite-like branching is common. The obsermtions have some elements in common with published results for highly purified electrolytes. Several significant differences were observed. The truncated pyramidal and block type growth discussed in he literature is suppressed under the conditions studied. The results are briefly discussed in terms of the screw dislocation, fault, and layer type growth mechanisms of crystal growth.

In September last I had my attention called by Mr. R. G. Leckie to a deposit of nickel in the township of Orford, province of Quebec. In many ways it has proved to be a subject of great interest. As this ore is, as far as I can learn, entirely new in mineralogy and metallurgy, it has seemed to me that it would be a matter of interest to the Institute to have laid before it, in a short paper, the peculiarities I have met with in studying it. This deposit of nickel was first described by Dr. T. Sterry Hunt, our President, in the Geology of Canada, 1863, p. 738, in the follow ing terms: " The general diffusion of nickel throughout the magnesian rocks of the Quebec group has been already noticed.
