The stoichiometry ranges ofNiOl+y and LiFe,O,-d were established by high-temperatwe electrochemical meas7rements in a stabilized-zirconia electrolyte cell. The results were consistent with doubly ionized cation vacancies in NiO,+y and interstitial lithium or iron ions in . The defect structure of the ternary ferrite was derived from the consideration of equilibration with respect to oxygen between the solid and the gas phase. The absolute magnitudes of defect concentrations were calculated. Pavtial molar enthalpies of oxygen in the compounds were calculated and interpreted in terms of the enthalpy of defect formation in these crystals. NICKEL oxide (NiO,,?) is a metal-deficient, p-type, extrinsic semiconductor whose properties are consistent with a structural model based on the presence of cation vacancies as the predominant ionic defect at sufficiently high temperatures and oxygen activities. A survey of previously reported conductivity studies and the presentation of some more recent conductivity measurements will be given in a later paper.' The absolute magnitude of the equilibrium vacancy concentration in NiO has been reported from combined conductivity and thermogravimetric data of ' However, disagreement exists concerning the state of ionization of the nickel vacancies in NiO. Some authors3-' have proposed that the predominant defects in NiO are singly ionized nickel vacancies and positive holes (h') formed by the reaction where, accorhng to the notation of Kroger and Vink,6'7 Oq represents an oxygen ion on its normal lattice site. Other authors"27E have proposed that doubly ionized nickel vacancies (V{i ) and positive holes are predominant and are formed by the reaction One purpose of the present investigation was to establish the nature of the predominant defect in NiO,+? as well as its equilibrium concentration and thermo-dynamic properties at elevated temperatures and known oxygen activities. To accomplish this purpose, the coulometric titration of oxygen into and out of NiO was accomplished using a galvanic cell involving the calcia-stabilized zirconia electrolyte. The ternary oxide, lithium ferrite (LiFe50,-6) is ferromagnetic and has the inverse spinel structure LiFe,O,-d Thus, in the ideal stoichiometric XY204 lattice, Fe3 ions occupy one-eighth of the tetrahedral (A) sites, and i' and Fe3' ions share at random one-half of the octahedral (B) sites within the fcc sublattice of oxygen ions.g The structure and thermodynamics of the spinel structures have been comprehensively decribed.'-' A recent compilation of literature for lithium ferrite is also available. 15 Oxygen-excess LiFe50sis not expected to exist because both i' and 17e3& ions are in their highest normal valency states (positive hole formation is not favorable). As will be discussed, equilibration of the ferrite crystal with oxygen of a surrounding gaseous phase will result in the introduction of equilibrium concentrations of ionic and electronic defects. In the Results and Discussion section a defect model for LiFe50,-d is proposed. This defect model is tested by high-temperature coulometric titration experiments. EXPERIMENT The oxygen activities in nonstoichiometric NiOl+, (and also LiFe,O,-d) were measured by means of coulometric titration with the high-temperature galvanic cell The critical characteristic of a suitable experimental cell is the complete isolation of the phase to be investigated in a minimum sized chamber which is free from extraneous sources and sinks for oxygen (leakage). Then oxygen is only admitted to the chamber or removed from it in known amounts by coulometric titration, which involves the passage of oxygen ions through the solid electrolyte with electrochemical oxidation and reduction reactions at the platinum contacts to the electrolyte. The experimental cell is shown in Fig. 1. The cap of the cell was the tip from a closed-end alumina tube, which was found to be leak-free from a helium leak-detector test. This alumina cap was about 1.2 cm OD and about 1.5 cm high. A Zircoa calcia-stabilized zirconia tablet (crucible lid) of 1.5 cm diam and 0.3 cm thickness served as the solid electrolyte. A Pyrex ring of about 0.1 cm thickness was placed between the electrolyte and the cap. The electrolyte tablet was painted with platinum paste on the entire outer face and on that part of the inner face which would be within the enclosure; these electrodes were further prepared by heating in air at 1000°C for 2 hr. Nickel oxide powder, listed as 99.999 pct pure, was purchased from Leico Industries, Inc. Pills of the NiO were cold-pressed and sintered at 1050°C for 3 hr in a platinum crucible. Quebec Cartier Mining Co. operates a low-grade iron ore deposit at Lac Jeannine, Que., which is located at the extreme southwestern end of the Quebec-Labrador Trough (Fig. 1). The facilities there include one of the world's largest concentrators, a hydroelectric plant of 60,000 hp, and the modern town of Gagnon. A 191-mile railway connects the mine to the seaport situated at Port Cartier on the St. Lawrence River. The harbor in Port Cartier can accommodate both lake and large ocean- going vessels and is also the site of a major grain terminal. The concentrator in Lac Jeannine is designed to produce some 8 million tpy (tons per year) of specular hematite concentrate, containing 66% Fe, from approximately 20 million tons of crude ore. An annual stripping program of 5 to 8 million cu yd of waste rock uncovers the required ore. Approximately 100,000 tons of ore and waste are removed daily on a year-round, 24-hr-per-day basis. The open pit covers an area with maximum dimensions of 8,000 x 2,600 ft (Fig. 2). Present mining plans call for an ultimate depth of approximately 1,000 ft below original ground level. The rocks in the pit area are typical of this portion of the Grenville geological province. They consist largely of marble, quartz rock, pegmatite, iron formation, and stratigraphically older gneisses. The iron-ore formation consists of medium to coarse-grained specular hematite in a quartz host rock. The formation occurs locally in a plunging, anticlinal form. The topography in the vicinity of the mine is rolling, with maximum variations in elevation of about 400 ft. The hills are thickly wooded with birch, black spruce, and some tamarack. Lakes and muskeg areas are plentiful. Precipitation and temperature records have been kept since 1959. The annual rainfall has ranged between a low of 23 in. and a high of 42 in.

IN THE FIELD of track haulage, interest has seemed to center on the question of larger mine cars both for handling material from loading point to shaft bottom or surface, and for shuttle service. Saving of time in car changing is obvious if larger cars are used. In addition, shorter trips result where car transportation is from face to opening without transfer. This also brings about side-track and equipment savings. Track shuttle service, using large automatic-dump cars (10 tons) between loading machines and trip loading point, has been a satisfactory solution for the operator who mechanizes a working mine regularly equipped with a large number of small mine cars. This development in track shuttle haulage, has made track installation and maintenance increasingly important, requiring closer supervision.

THE TERM "engineer" has been defined in many ways by many men broadly speaking the statement that "an engineer is one versed in or practicing any brar1c.h of engineering" is sufficient. A rather close relation exists between the sciences of surgery and engineering. A successful surgeon must have the capacity to perform the most delicate work, under extremely circumscribed conditions. This portion of his education is purely mechanical and although marvellous in itself, it must remain secondary to that greater possession, a thorough knowledge of human anatomy coupled with a comprehensive understanding of human psychology. In sub- stance, the surgeon must not only know how to operate but what is more important, he must be able to decide when, if ever, the operation should be undertaken.

Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 189 consists of a record of the scientific data obtained in the iron blast-furnace slag investigation which is reported in Technical Paper 187, "Slag Viscosity Tables for Blastfurnace Work." It includes a description of the method of preparing the synthetic melts, construction of an improved electric furnace, and refinements in laboratory methods of measurement. Only the general features of the work and the conclusions drawn from the experimental data can be given attention here. Silicates in the Liquid State In the manufacture of refractories, Portland cement, glass, and porcelain, and in pyrometallurgical operations, importance attaches to the behavior of-silicate compounds at temperatures beyond the range of common experience. This field of research has not been investigated as carefully as its scientific and industrial importance would seem to warrant. Probably the most important of the unsolved problems in the chernistry of silicates is the question of their stability in the liquid state. That little progress toward the solution of this problem has been made is not strange if there be borne in mind the difficulties attending experiments made at temperatures at which silicates become fluid, and the comparatively short time since it became possible to measure these temperatures. On the other 'hand, considerable progress has been made in the study of the compounds in the solid state because of the directness and simplicity of methods of optical examination. Important advances have been made by the Geophysical Laboratory at Washington in recent years. At Buffington Station, Gary, Ind., Universal Atlas Cement operates fourteen 8 x 101/2 x 155-ft cement kilns in mill 6 and two 11 x 360-ft kilns in the Harbor plant. The No. 11 and 12 kilns in mill 6 are equipped with Manitowac recuperator sections. This report describes studies in measuring exterior shell temperatures on several of these kilns and the development of a traveling radiation pyrometer with certain novel features. Preliminary Work: At first various temperature-sensing devices were placed on the steel shell: 1) crayons with calibrated melting points, 2) colored paints with temperature-calibrated pigments, 3) aluminum paints with temperature-calibrated binders, and 4) metal-stem dial thermometers. The colored paints and aluminum paints failed to indicate the temperatures correctly. The crayons and thermometers did indicate fairly correct temperatures, but it proved impossible to apply enough of these on the shell to detect all the potential areas where hot spots might develop. Furthermore, considerable labor was required to apply these sensors and read the temperatures. Consequently no further work was done with these devices. Formation of Hot Spots: In the burning or clinker-ing zone of a cement kiln, the thickness of the protective coating and thickness of the brick govern the amount of heat transmitted to the steel kiln shell. Usually the protective coating consists of 4 to 8 in. of fused cement clinker. The formation of a hot spot is usually caused by loss of coating? that is, localized areas of the coating become thin or fall away from the refractory. This is generally caused by excessive temperature in the burning zone over a fairly long period of time. It may also be caused by a sudden thermal change in the burning zone. Variations in raw feed composition and in feed rate require changes in the fuel and air rates, and when these are not appropriately altered, conditions may develop in the kiln that will result in loss of coating. Luminescence on the kiln shell indicates that a hot spot has developed to a point that usually alters the refractory's thermal conductivity properties. When this thermal weakness zone occurs in the burning zone of the kiln, constant vigilance is required to protect it by maintaining proper coating. Even so, it has been the writers' experience that within a period of several days to about four weeks the hot spot usually recurs with greater severity. This necessitates shutting down the kiln and re-bricking the affected area. One of the prerequisites of a good burnerman is the ability to maintain a protective coating despite the many variables in operation. When he knows that it is getting thin or that an area has dropped off, he reduces the firing rate and kiln speed and brings feed into the affected area in an effort to rebuild the coating. But when powdered fuel is burned, the atmosphere of the kiln may prevent the burnerman's observing the condition of the coating closely at all times without taking off the fire. It is not considered good practice to do this frequently, as it imposes a thermal shock on the coating and upsets operation of the kiln. To help the burnerman scan the shell of the kiln along the burning zone, therefore, a radiation pyrometer, connected to a potentiometric recorder, was mounted on a slowly moving steel cable. The theory of operation, construction details, and adaptability of the radiation pyrometer are included in an excellent monograph' and also in a textbook.' Shell temperatures of the Atlas Cement kilns were measured with a Brown Instruments Div. low intermediate range Radiamatic unit, of range 200" to 1200°F, and a circular chart Electronik potentio-metric recorder, of range 500" to 1000°F. In Bulletin 59095M the supplier publishes standard calibration data (millivolts vs degrees Fahrenheit) for this radiation pyrometer, These data, however, apply only to flat surfaces having emissivities of unity. Calibration of Radiation Pyrometer for Use on Curved Surfaces: When applied to surface temperature measurements, the radiation pyrometer reading depends on the nature of the surface, the material of which it is composed, and also to some extent on the temperature of the surroundings. Although the present radiation pyrometer is designed to give a calibrated response under ideal (black body) conditions when used commercially, it must be calibrated empirically. The calibration procedure, given below, follows that described by Dike (Ref. 1, pp. 38-39). (Salt Lake Meeting, August, 1914) THE purpose of this paper is to review the history of the Drumlummon, one of the famous old mines of the West. Mining engineers, when sent to examine new mines in old districts, or to decide whether an old property, under new conditions, will pay to re-open, have had difficulty in learning anything authentic regarding workings which are under water, and historical facts about the working character of the ore, the total production, and the value of the ore with increasing depth. Not many years elapse after the pumps are pulled, before maps, books and records are destroyed, and the value of the publications of the Institute would be increased if they contained the history of many old mines now abandoned. The unsuccessful efforts of the writer quite recently in trying to obtain reliable information about a gold mine which was reported to have produced several million dollars between 1880 and 1888, the workings of which are now partially caved and under water, impressed upon his mind the desirability of having a permanent record of old properties. In this particular case, the owners insisted that under present conditions of improved methods of treatment -particularly by the use of cyanide, which was not an applied process when the mine was operated, the property. could be made to pay a handsome profit on ore left in sight in the old workings, but no assay records could be found to confirm these assurances, and even the records of bullion shipments had been destroyed. If surveys and maps were made as the work progressed, no trace of them could be found, and therefore opening of the ground through a new shaft and drifts therefrom would be attended by some risk while exploring near the old workings. Fatal accidents by flooding under these conditions have occurred, and as an evidence that miners have fears of such dangers, it was urged upon the Mining Committee during a recent session of the Montana Legislature, by a delegation of

The occurrellce of such a large amount of gold in the Hart-eel granite, even though the surmised existence of similar areas is not new, brings freshly to mind the pegmatite type of mag-matic differentiation lately brought again to attention by occurrences at Silver Peak, Nev., described by Spurr; and in Alaska, described by both Spurr and Brooks. In both localities granitic rocks or dikes are thought to pass into metalliferous quartz-veins. An interesting association in this connection is the occurrence of diamonds in residual pegmatitic clay of Sail Juao de Chapado, Brazil, described by Derby :' (P. 142) "Bodies of pegmatite are quite common in the older rocks of Brazil, both in the diamond regions and elsewhere, occurring not only in the gneiss and granite, but in the schistose series as well. Those that have been examined are dike-like in their mode of occurrence and granitic in composition.'' (P. 143) '" The question of the eruptive or secretionary origin of pegmatites has long been a subject of discussion among geologists.... The recent studies .. seen] to have clearly established that most if not all of them are essentially eruptive masses, though possibly modified in some way by aqueous agencies. Even before becoming acquainted with the literature of the subject this view had seemed to me to be the only acceptable one as regards the typical pegmatites of Brazil." What is pegmatite ? J. F. Kemp says :2 "... veins or dikes—it is an open question which is the more correct term— are met formed of very coarsely crystalline aggregates of the same minerals that constitute granite. These are called pegmatite and in them is the home of graphic granite, the curious intergrowth of quartz and feldspar, such that a cross fracture of the blades of quartz suggests cuneiform characters.... In regard to the larger veins or dikes it seems improbable that true igneous fusion could have afforded such coarsely crystalline aggregates, and so we are forced to assume such abundance of steam and other vapors, i.e, mineralizers, as to almost, if not quite, imply solution."

This paper presents an analytical solution of the problem of freezing of a semi-infinite slab with constant surface temperature; in this analysis accoz~nt is taken of the heat evolution during the solid-state transformations in the frozen skin. The regions where transformations occur are treated as plane isothermal heat sources; i.e., the rates of transformations are assumed to be infinite. In the model considered, three plane heat sources are assumed to be present in the frozen solid. The solution yields the temperature distribution in the solid, the rates of movement of the heat sources , and the rate of movement of the solidification front. It is shown that, although the sum of the heats of transformations in the solid is about 20 or 43 pct of the heat of fusion of iron or manganese, respectively, the effect of the heat evolution in solid-state transformations on the rate of solidification is insignzficant. IN several recent mathematical studies of solidification of liquid metals'-3 no account was taken of the heat evolution accompanying the solid-state transformations. In the case of, for example, steel, there are several phase transformations 6 -y, y -a, and the magnetic transformation. Whether or not a significant error is introduced into the mathematical simulation of solidification processes by the omission of the heat effects associated with these phase transformations is not known. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effect of these phase transformations on the temperature distribution and the rate of solidification based solely on the heat transfer point of view. That is, for the sake of simplicity, freezing of a pure metal with solid-state transformations will be considered. The mathematical model which represents the present problem includes four moving heat sources representing freezing and phase transformations, 6— y — a — ferromagnetic. The thermal properties such as conductivity and specific heat, and so forth, are different from one phase to the other. But they are considered to be uniform over any particular phase. The usual Fourier heat flow law is employed. The concept of conservation of energy is applied at every heat source in order to estimate their rate of movement. The temperature distribution in the solid and the positions where transformations occur are expressed analytically in terms of error function solutions and four coefficients which are determined from four nonlinear algebraic equations. These coefficients can be calculated either by trial and error or by any numerical method. TENTATIVE -reservations for the cruise to Vene-zuela and the West Indies have been coming in nicely, but there is plenty of room yet for mem-bers and their friends. The exact schedule is even yet not entirely fixed. Owing to difficulty in securing the release. as, early as had been hoped, of the Lapland, which is so particularly well adapted to this cruise, the time has been shortened. The steamer is now scheduled to sail at midnight on Jan. 30 or 31, the exact date still to be determined, and to return on Feb. 20. This change will so shorten the time as to permit many more to attend as they need not be so long. away from their business. It .will necessitate cutting out the pro-posed day at Kingston in Jamaica, and, if the steamer is -not available until Jan. 31, may also necessitate passing Bermuda without a stop. The time remaining will, however, allow a stop of one and a half days at Havana, a full day, on the Canal, Zone with opportunity to go through the locks, the Culebra Cut, and to see Panama, and the five days, planned in Venezuela: Just how many can be taken into Lake Maracaibo and the oil fields will depend on the local transportation that can be made available. It may be necessary to restrict this shore party as to numbers, but if so, something interesting will be provided to fill the time of the others. At other points accommodations will be ample for all Members of the excursion will get back in time to register and attend the smoker on the opening day of the meeting as also possibly the Monday after-noon sessions if any be held. The usual Institute rules for excursions will be fol-lowed assigning space in the order of application with members first. Guests vouched for by members will be heartily welcomed. The steamer rate varies accord-ing to the accommodations chosen. There are a limited number of one and two berth rooms at the minimum of $250 per passenger with plenty of room at $300 to $500, according to space and location. At prices from $750 up per passenger rooms with private bath are to be had. Plans are on the-basis of two people in a three-berth room. The scope of this article covers only the mathematical principles involved in discounting to present worth future expected profits and it is believed answers definitely two questions, which were raised at a recent meeting of the Committee on Methods of Valuing Coal Properties, as follows: 1. The accumulative effect of carrying charges on the value of coal mines showing definitely the number of years beyond which the coal may not be mined at a profit and subsequent to which the possession of any unmined coal will be a liability rather than an asset. 2. The effect on the valuation of coal mines, in the presence of the carrying charges described in question 1, of an increase in plant capacity and production. In general, in considering these questions, it may be stated that the consideration of an increase in plant capacity and production follows as a matter of course after a determination has been made of the year beyond which no profits are to be realized (giving the carrying charges accumulative effect, or in other words capitalizing the carrying charges, as shown hereinafter). For example, if it is determined that any coal that is unmined after 45 years will have no value or less than no value, the question immediately arises as to whether or not a plant should be constructed that would result in a yearly production great enough to extract the entire tonnage in a time less than 45 years, and if so the number of years less than 45 years that would, from a financial standpoint, be the most desirable, all under the assumption that the market for the product or the transportation facilities are such that the yearly production can be increased to the desired amount. Specifically, the carrying charge is considered herein as yearly expense, such as state or local taxes, which are assessed each year against the total tonnage remaining in the ground (or the total coal acreage remaining) at the beginning of the year, at a fixed rate per ton (or a fixed rate per acre) OF a fixed percentage of the assessed value, in the latter case it being necessary to convert such percentage into a rate per

The theory of gravitation is based on Newton's law that any two bodies exert a mutual attraction which is proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them; i. e., A = KMRm2 (1) where K is a constant, M and m are the respective masses of the two bodies, and R the distance between them. In the earth's gravitational system, the earth is one of the bodies; the other may be any body within or without the earth. In theoretical discussions and calculations,in regard to gravity, that other body usually is taken as a unit of mass: in the C:. C:. S. system, a body of one gram in mass. Gravity and Level Surfaces Gravity is defined in geophysics as the force of attraction exerted by the earth, towards itself, on a body of unit mass. The intensity of gravity is usually expressed in dynes of force or in centimeters of acceleration In geophysical work in America, most commonly it is expressed in dynes (per gram) with the "per gram" understood and not directly expressed. In geophysical work in Europe, most commonly it is expressed in centimeters per second per second (cm. /sec.2) and less commonly lrierely as centimeter-gram-second units (c. g. s). At sea level, the intensity of gravity amounts very nearly to 980 dynes. The vertical is the direction along which the attraction of gravity is exerted at any point. In most cases, it is very nearly, but not quite, perpendicular to the earth's surface. The path that would be taken by a body falling freely through space toward the earth is vertical at each point and may be spoken of also as ('the vertical," or as the line of the vertical, or as a line of force of gravity. At the earth's surface it comrrlonly is very nearly, but not quite, a straight line.

It is only in recent years that substantial progress has been made in developing a physico-chemical picture of the solid state. The molecular concept, so useful in dealing with gases, was naturally carried over to the field of crystalline solids; it has resulted in the firm implanting of erroneous concepts that only now are being eradicated successfully. Two simply written and effective books on the subject are Crystal Chemistry by Stillwell' and An Introduction to Crystal Chemistry by Evans. A more complete treatment of the subject is available in a book by Wells. The monograph by Hucke14 also touches on a subject most easily perceived by reference to the brief introduction by Bragg; that master of the field. These texts make it clear that while some solids are built of molecules, many are built of ions, others of atoms connected in the form of giant molecules, and still others of cations and electrons. The various lattices in which these entities are systematically arranged, the joint use of several of these entities, and the transitional character of some of the bonds make for the great variety of crystalline solids. The purpose of this paper is to point out a most important corollary of present views on the structure of solids. In this connection the classification of solids in Table I is helpful.

THE Philippine Islands. have produced no oil commercially, nevertheless, oil is known to be present at various places in the islands.1 Although all attempts to produce oil commercially have failed, no intelligent, persistent exploration has been carried out. The Richmond Petroleum Corpn. a subsidiary of the Standard Oil Co. of California) and a syndicate, headed by Ralph Arnold are at present engaged in exploring Bondoc Peninsula in Tayabas Province, one of the promising Philippine areas, in a manner that promises to test the petroleum possibilities adequately and intelligently. How can the petroleum resources of an entirely undeveloped area like the Philippines be estimated, where not even the areal extent of the various geologic formations is known? Obviously no calculated figure for assured future production can be derived. Yet a study of the evidence of the occurrence of petroleum, the character of the possible reservoir beds, the probable source rocks, the character and size of favorable structures, and the area over which petroleum-bearing rocks are known to occur, will throw some light on the question. The fact that rocks of the same geologic age and similar composition have been explored and are producing in Borneo, Sumatra, and Java to the south and in Formosa and Japan to the north also affect the problem, so that one can obtain some idea of the quantity of petroleum that may reasonably be expected from the Philippines. It is this measure of the possibilities rather than a definite calculation of petroleum reserves that is presented herewith. This paper will not attempt to describe, nor even to enumerate in detail, the occurrences of petroleum in the Philippines as such data have already been published. The mill was built over a mine previously worked but abandoned in 1912 because of the leanness of the ore and the large quantity of water encountered. The ore prices prevailing—$100 a ton in June, 1915, as against $50 in 1912-—favored the new undertaking. The mill was designed for good recovery so that it might operate in times of depression. In design and equipment, the mill is exclusively local in conception and construction. Former Exploitation The tract of land is a part of the large Guinn holdings; 70 acres are comprised in this particular lot, which is situated just a mile north of the center of Webb City on the Alba line of the Southwest Missouri Electric Railway. The ore lies 242 ft. below the surface at the top of the knoll which is surrounded by the well known properties: Black Cat, Ground Floor, Florence, Hurry-Up, Electrical, and Mercantile. Since the abandonment, in 1913, of the Yellow Dog a bit farther to the north, the Black Cat, Ground Floor, and Florence workings had been flooded. However, as there was no cut through from this side into the area it was proposed to exploit, it was thought that moderate pumping facilities would take care of the water. Three shafts had already been sunk to the ore horizon during the previous operations; the ground was connected by wide drifts and possibly 10 acres mined out, principally about the two southerly shafts which at surface are 8 and 13 ft. lower, respectively, than the collar of the shaft at which the new mill was built. The former mill on the lease was known as the Bohemian Girl. This mill, built in 1910, was removed after some 3 years' work. HIGHLY pure metals are needed for low-temperature electron transport studies in progress. Recent improvements in purification techniques, such as zone refining, have made it possible to obtain metals with improved purity. For some metals, the improvement has been to the extent that ordinary analytical techniques are inadequate and special methods are needed.1 For other metals purification is more difficult, so that simple but rapid analytical methods are desirable as an aid in evaluating the effectiveness of purification procedures. Furthermore, it is desirable to be able to determine the impurity level of the sample or ingot with the minimum of physical disturbance of the material. In order to aid in the preparation of purer metals, techniques involving the measurement of electrical resistance at liquid-helium temperatures have been devised for studying impurity distributions in zone-refined ingots and other bulk samples without destroying the ingot or its geometry. The method yields information on the variations in purity along the length of the ingot or sample and provides a measure of the overall purity of the material. Compared with ordinary analytical methods, the resistivity method is rapid, sensitive, and does not require significant physical disturbance of samples with reasonable shapes. It has the disadvantage that resistance measurements are not specific, i.e., they do not identify the impurity. However, this disadvantage is offset by the advantage of being able to establish a measure of the overall purity so far as electrically active" impurities are concerned. METHOD AND ITS BASIS The method is based on the well-known fact that the resistivity, at Liquid helium temperatures, of a reasonably pure metal containing no regions with additional phases decreases with increasing chemical purity or a decrease in the number of physical defects. It is convenient to separate the total resistivity into three parts: where is the resistivity due to the scattering of the conduction electrons by the lattice vibrations or phonons, p is the contribution due to physical defects, and originates from the effect of chemical impurities in the metal. Insofar as Matthiessen's rule is obeyed,2 pphys and pchem are independent of temperature. Except possiblyin the very purest metals, ptherm is negligible at liquid helium temperatures and For zone-refined metals, which normally are well annealed and consist of large grains, at the chemical purity levels thus far attained the available data indicate that pphys is negligibly small or at least constant throughout the ingot. ThIS reports on some work done on the solubility and diffusivity of oxygen in liquid silver. Solubility. Improvements in the measurement of the solubility of oxygen in silver and silver alloys were made because precise data were needed for calculating diffusion coefficients of oxygen in these alloys. The apparatus and the procedure used were similar to those of Parlee and Sacris.' The main improvement was in the temperature-measuring technique. A MV30 mullite protection tube containing a calibrated Pt-Pt, 10 pct Rh thermocouple was inserted in the reaction tube from the top through a vacuum-tight swage-lok fitting. The protection tube was well-immersed in the liquid silver, which was heated by induction. A Leeds and Northrup potentiometer was used in connection with the thermocouple. All runs reported were made at 1 atm. The temperature range investigated varied from 940" to 1200°C. The ternary point in Ag-0 phase diagram2 is at 939°C and 0.32 wt pct O. This point was reinvestigated using the above-described apparatus and was found to be at 939°C and 0.315 wt pct 0. It was determined by observing the sudden evolution of oxygen at this point while the solubility measurements were made. The point was easily reproducible if precautions were taken to keep the liquid silver essentially in equilibrium with oxygen and to lower the temperature very slowly. All of the results of this new solubility investigation are plotted in Fig. 1. They are represented by the "least-squares" line shown in the figure and the following equation for solubility at po2 = 1 atm: log% O =695.4/T - 1.086 This equation differs only slightly from that proposed by Parlee and sacrisl and that of Diaz, Masson, and Richardson.3 The points of Parlee and Sacris, using an optical pyrometer, are shown for comparison.

THE important advances that have been made of recent years in mining and milling methods and in mechanical equipment at mines need no re- telling, but there has been a remarkable growth in one type of equipment which has gone nearly unnoticed. That is the increasing use of storage-battery locomotives underground. Since the war the number of these locomotives and their field of use have increased tremendously; their growing acceptance represents an al- most complete reversal of opinion from an earlier period when they were generally looked upon as in- adequate for the strain of mine service. At the time when storage-battery powered units were first making their bid for recognition, the use of power in haulage had already passed through several phases; hand tramming, rope haulage, compressed air locomotives, even gasoline locomotives, had all been used, ending finally in the general adoption of the electric trolley locomotive for practically all power-haulage requirements. It was, and is, conceded that the trolley loco- motive met more adequately the varied and severe conditions of mine service than any previous type of haul- age unit. Subsequent developments have had to endure comparison and surpass in performance that type of haulage before changes would be considered.

Monazite has had a Cinderella-like history. Although nearly go per cent pure rare-earth compound (rare-earth phosphate) it was sought at first not for the rare earths but for the sake of a minor constituent—thorium. The thorium, essential for the Welsbach gaslight mantle, was present in only small quantities and the principal constituents, the rare earths, were largely discarded. Gradually, however, the rare earths have developed uses of their own and today have left the thorium far behind in value. Occurrence Monazite was first produced commercially about 1886, in North Carolina, where it was collected in small sluices by farmers who found it in stream beds on their land. The deposits were later exploited on a larger scale, but were mostly abandoned in a few years, when monazite from Brazil came upon the market in far larger quantities. Domestic production ceased entirely in 1906. The Brazilian source is still active, together with Indian, Dutch East Indies, and Australian deposits. Several other localities in the United States have yielded monazite, but none of these has produced commercially as yet. Monazite occurs originally in pegmatite~ and gneisses, through which, unfortunately, it is scattered in highly dispersed form. All commercially useful deposits consist of transported monazite sands liberated by erosion and concentrated by the action of water, which has sluiced away lighter materials and concentrated the heavy (D = 5.0 to 5.2) grains of monazite, together with ilmenite, zircon, garnet, and other dense minerals. The Carolina deposits were in stream beds; most of the other deposits mentioned are on or near the seashore, where the action of the waves has served to concentrate the monazite. In most cases today, the sands are worked to obtain the ilmenite and zircon, as well as monazite. The minerals are separated by means of sluices, dry tables, and magnetic separators, and each is finally obtained nearly pure. No crushing or grinding is necessary. The concentrates are shipped in fiber bags.
