FOR more than 25 years evaluations of coal cleaning units have appeared in many publications, and during this time considerable progress has been made in developing the theory and techniques of calculating washery results. A variety of characteristics have been defined over the years, many receiving general recognition during the first post-war Coal Preparation Conference in Paris in 1950. Coal preparation has become a science, and the approach to preparation problems is being revolutionized. Formerly, for example, if a coal operator wanted to know the performance of a given cleaning unit for a particular grade of his run-of-mine, he either shipped a carload to the manufacturer for a test run or relied on a report of a test carried out on a coal similar to the one he intended to clean. In modern practice the expensive, time-consuming test work generally can be avoided if the washability curves of the coal in question and the error curve of the cleaner are known. Normally a guarantee can be given on the strength of this information. General acceptance of modern standards has thus reduced the need for pilot-scale models of existing types of coal cleaners. Needless to say, the method requires exhaustive and accurate information on the cleaning unit and on all the additional circumstances affecting its results, in- formation that ultimately can be secured only from actual tests made in the laboratory or in the washery.

The kinetics and mechanism of transfer of a constituent across a slag-metal interface are fundamentally important because many metallurgical processes involve the existence of a slag phase and a metal phase. Industrial processes seldom proceed to equilibrium, and information of the rates and modes of reactions are therefore often of greater practical importance than equilibrium data. A study of the kinetics of sulphur transfer across a slag-metal interface under reducing conditions will contribute a great deal toward a better understanding of desulphurization in the blast furnace process. The general principles existing in the transfer of a constituent, such as sulphur, across a slag-metal interface can be extended to similar transfer phenomena in other metallurgical processes. The present paper will demonstrate how such studies will lead to fruitful results from both the practical and theoretical standpoints. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The apparatus used was, simple. A graphite crucible 15/8-in. id, a wall 1/8-in. thick, and a depth of 4 in., was packed in an outer fused silica tube with powdered magnesia. The crucible assembly was rotated at a speed of 235 rpm inside an in- duction coil. A charge of 250 g of Armco ingot iron was introduced into the graphite crucible and melted by induction heating. The melt was held at a desired temperature for 3-5 "'in., aftcr which 7.5 g of granular ferrous sulphide was added and the bath was held for another 3-5 mi11. A metal sample was then taken by means of a fused silica tube and a rubber suction bulb. Immediately after the metal sample was taken, 30 g of a prefused and crushed slag were introduced. The Jeffrey operation of Canadian Johns -Manville Co. , Ltd., at Asbestos, Quebec, is considered to be the world's largest asbestos mine. It accounts for approximately 37% of Canadian production of chysotile asbestos and about 13% of world production. Rated capacity is over 600,000 stpy (540,000 mtpy) of fiber, of which well over 90% is exported to the United States and seventy other countries. During the early 1970's the company completed a five-year modernization and expansion program which included the installation of a unique 72 in. by 93 in. gyratory crusher to handle the extremely blocky serpentinized peridotite ore. Because of the large diameter of this crusher the top ring of the shell was made in two halves which were bolted together. Hundred-ton trucks dump from two sides of the crusher into the 200 st (180 mt) dump pocket which is equipped with dust collecting ducts in the walls of the other two sides. The installation was designed to accommodate the eventual use of 200 -ton trucks. Crushed ore at a. size of 7 ½ in. (191 mm) falls into a uniquely designed crushed ore pocket equipped with three sloping steel sides and one vertical side, which make it totally live. Infrared heaters installed in back of the hopper sides prevent the ore from sticking to the steel. Another interesting feature is an eccentric removal bridge which is permanently mounted inside the crushed ore pocket. The two halves of the bridge are let down by electric winches to form a platform on which the eccentric cart travels and from where maintenance is done. Level indications in the crushed ore pocket are by radioactive indicators. Under the crushed ore pocket is a 72 in. by 28 ft (1.83 m by 8.5 m) apron feeder which operates at 7. 2 to 50 fpm (2. 3 to 15. 3 mpm). Crushed ore is discharged to a picking belt for tramp removal. A crossbelt magnetic separator is also mounted over this belt. Permanently mounted belt reels are also situated over the picking belt to facilitate the changing of this unit. A 60 in. (1. 52 m) wide takeaway belt then elevates the crushed ore to t.he surface facilities. Instead of discharging to a crushed ore stockpile, the takeaway conveyor delivers the ore to a 300-ton distribution bin. The ore is then screened and secondary crushed; and the plus ¾ in. (19 m) is "stored in a 3,000 ton bin while the minus ¾ in. is dried and then sent to storage. This system of directly screening primary crushed ore is similar to that used at both the Endako molybdenum and Gibraltar copper operations in British Columbia. DEFORMATION of cold-rolled fcc metals and alloys produces one or the other of two types of rolling textures, usually referred to as the copper type or the brass type. The pure fcc metals, with the exception of silver, develop the copper-type texture when rolled at room temperature. Silver, brass, and many other alloys develop the brass-type texture. Transition from one texture type to another can also occur. Solute additions to pure copper cause a transition from the copper-type to the brass-type texture.' Varying the deformation temperature also produces texture transitions. Copper rolled at -196°C developed the brass-type texture2 and silver rolled at elevated temperatures, 200°C, developed the copper-type texture.374 The work of Haessner,' Smallman and Green,6 and Hu and coworkers3'4 seems to have established an apparent correlation between the type of rolling texture (and the texture transition) and the stacking-fault probability. Thus materials with low stacking-fault energies are thought to develop the brass-type texture while high stacking-fault energy materials develop the copper-type texture. Mikkola and cohen7 measured by X-ray diffraction techniques the stacking-fault probability, a, in the ordered and disordered fcc alloy Cu3Au. Unexpectedly, ordered specimens showed about twice the stacking-fault probability as the disordered ones. Marcinkowski and Zwe118 also found stacking faults in ordered Cu,Au, but not in the disordered CusAu. More recently, Camanzi and coworkers9 have shown that the intrinsic stacking-fault energy of Cu3Au undergoes a considerable decrease (approximately 100 ergs per sq cm) when passing from the disordered to the ordered phase. In general, deformation reduces order'' but some of our measurements showed that some long-range order still remains in Cu3Au after cold reduction by rolling 80 pct. From the above considerations Cu3Au offers the possibility of studying the texture transition in fcc alloys without varying either the temperature or the composition. If the stacking-fault energy correlation is correct, an initially ordered alloy should develop the brass-type texture during rolling while a disordered alloy should develop the copper-type texture. The present communication describes some initial results of experiments designed to investigate this possibility. The rolling textures of ordered and disordered Cu3Au samples were determined after various amounts of deformation. The ordered sample had an initial long-range-order parameter of S = 1, determined from X-ray diffraction. The grain size of both the ordered and disordered samples was the same, and the initial textures of both were also identical and approximately random. No obvious differences in the deformation textures of the ordered and disordered materials were detected up to 35 pct reduction and the (111) pole figures of Fig. 1 resemble that of pure copper. However, with reduction larger than 35 pct and less than 50 pct, a marked deviation from the copper texture was noted in the ordered material. INVESTIGATION by German chemists during the World War showed that particles of iron oxide form rapidly in iron pipes carrying hydrogen gas under pressure when the gas contains small amounts of water. Under these conditions, the gas frequently exploded when expanding into a dirigible. The explanation of the explosions lies in the building up of a charge of static electricity in the flow just beyond the orifice and the ignition of the gas by a spark accompanying discharge of the electricity. Friction between the moving particles and the pipe generated the electric charge, which was manifested by a pale blue glow formed in the flow at pressures above two atmospheres. In one experiment, this glow, at eighty atmospheres, extended for a distance of forty to fifty centimetres, but did not ignite hydrogen and air mixtures until the charge was col-lected by a conductor and discharged across a gap between electrodes placed at the side of the column of gas. Autoignition did not occur when this discharge was effected at a distance from the gas column, nor if the gas used was thoroughly dried and free from impurities. The electric charge has been studied by placing various wire and screen conductors in the outcoming stream of gas, Guest having summarized these experiments. The application of these conclusions to fires in petroleum and natural gas issuing uncontrolled from wells is made in the following paper, citing the ignition of a wild gas well in Texas.

The Giesche Spas Akcyjna, in Polish Upper Silesia, produces zinc, lead and coal, together with many byproducts emanating from the zinc-lead ores. The development of the concern in the 230 years of its existence has been influenced not only by metallurgical improvements but also to an unusual extent by political and economic factors. The company was founded by George Giesche, who was born in 1653 and died in 1716, and who in 1704 received from Emperor Leopold I the exclusive privilege of mining and selling galmei1 in Silesia. His children, who retained the business, gave the name to the firm—George von Giesches Erben. After 1802 modifications in the Prussian mining and corporation laws limited the rights formerly enjoyed. The family concern became a corporation and expanded its activities, building smelters and opening new mines. The establishment of the present eastern boundary of Germany resulted in the transfer of nationality of a large part of the mines and surface plants to Poland, which, in turn, necessitated the formation of a Polish company, the Giesche Spólka Akcyjna. The first concentrators at the Bleischarley mine were built between 1854 and 1860 and owing to dual ownership were two in number. They were used only for the treatment of galena. In 1873 a concentrator was built for the treatment of sulfide ore preparatory to treatment in the Recke roasting plant, which was the first to have an acid plant for recovery of the sulfur gas. This concentrator was replaccd by a larger one in 1888, when the present orebody was opened up. At the same time, a mill was built for the treatment of the galmei. The concentration of the sulfide ore resulted in a much higher grade of feed for the zinc plants after the first troublesome steps of the roasting process had been worked out. Consequently, the oxide ore in its primitively concentrated state was no longer highly valued as a retort charge. and steps had to be taken to increase its zinc content.

The Pyhäsalmi mine of the Outokumpu Co. is located in central Finland (Fig. 1). The deposit was discovered in the autumn of 1958. Construction of the mine was started a year later, and production began on Mar. 1, 1962 (Fig. 2). At present, 750,000 metric tons (mt) of ore and a nearly equal amount of country rock are mined annually. Slightly over one-half million tons of various concentrates are produced per year, of which 85% is pyrite concentrate, 10% zinc concentrate, and 5% copper concentrate. The pyrite concentrate is treated in the company's pyrite smelter,1 yielding elementary sulfur, sulfur dioxide, and iron-oxide cinders, as well as electric power. Thus all the sulfides, totaling 75% of the ore, are of economic value. This is a fact which had a bearing on the development of the stoping method. GEOLOGY The ore is of breccia type containing fragments of country rock of varying sizes. It is coarse-grained pyrite ore containing sphalerite and chalcopyrite as a matrix between the pyrite grains. Only small amounts of pyrrhotite have been observed in certain marginal parts of the orebody. The ore averages 0.85% Cu, 3.0% Zn, 38% S, and 33% Fe. The orebody extends from the surface down to at least 500 m, which is the lowest level from which present information has been obtained. Horizontally, the orebody is 650 m long. It is 75 m wide at its central part, narrowing towards the ends (Fig. 3). At a depth of 115 m, the orebody suddenly narrows down to a thickness of 25 to 30 m. In the northern part of the orebody, the dip is 50° to 70°, but elsewhere it is almost vertical (Fig. 3).

This paper describes in quantitative terms the effect of sharpness of classification on the performance of the closed grinding circuit. The analysis is based on a large number of laboratory experiments designed to simulate the two most common industrial closed grinding systems. The experimental results show quantitatively the degree of improvement achievable by more efficient classification. In an earlier paper1 the senior author has presented a trend showing qualitative analysis of mill and classifier performance in tile closed grinding circuit. According to this analysis, the master key to a major improvement appeared to be effective removal of finished fine material from the classifier sands, or in other words, improved sharpness of classification, leading simultaneously to a substantial reduction of the circulating load. One purpose of this paper is to present the results of a quantitative investigation of the closed grinding circuit. Another is to set forth the essential pertinent variables revealed by the quantitative experiments carried out by the junior author. In the two most common systems of closed-circuit grinding, (1) feed to the circuit is introduced into the grinding unit, normally the ball mill, operating in closed circuit with the classifier; or (2) feed to the grinding circuit is introduced into the primary grinding unit, normally the rod mill, discharging into the classifier in closed circuit with the secondary grinding unit, normally the ball mill. In the following discussion, these two systems are analyzed separately in the indicated order. BALL MILL - CLASSIFIER CIRCUIT The Test Apparatus and Procedure: The test appara- tus included: (1) a F 195 mm x 220 mm laboratory ball mill rotated at a speed 77% of the theoretical critical speed, and a 7-kg batch of F 20 mm-F 50 mm steel balls; (2) a conventional 65-mesh test sieve and a Ro-Tap sieve shaker serving as a classifier; and (3) a Permaran instrument manufactured by Outo-kumpu Co. for surface area determinations by the permeability method. As no continuous closed-circuit experiments could be brought about on a laboratory scale, the process was broken down into alternating grinding and sizing steps in such a way that the new feed plus the returning sands always formed a batch of 1000 gm. For each selected grinding period and for each selected sharpness of classification the basic steps were repeated six times. Steady-state conditions were then reached. Crystalline vein quartz was used as a test material. Feed to the process consisted of -10-mesh fraction of this quartz crushed in rolls. This fraction included 15% of-65-mesh material. Experimental Results: The general flowsheet is shown in Fig. 1. Table I gives the essential data obtained representing steady-state conditions under the indicated set of variables. The table is based on 110 grinding experiments, 440 screen analyses and an equal number of specific surface area determinations. Fig. 2 shows the relationship between the cumulative net energy consumption and the cumulative number of mill rotations as evaluated by separate experiments. Note that this relationship is not linear but is instead represented by a slight curve. The data given in Table I are presented in graphical form as follows: Fig. 3 shows the produced -65-mesh material in grams per minute vs. time of grinding in minutes; the sharpnesses of classification at 65 mesh were 100%, 75% and 50%. It is clearly indicated that the highest-capacity figures call for relatively short grinding times and for the sharpest possible classification. Fig. 4 presents the specific surface area on the final -65-mesh product in square centimeters per gm vs. time of grinding in minutes. IN March 1949 the Calaveras Cement Co. was sued by five landowners whose properties are located in the vicinity of the plant. These landowners-all of them cattle ranchers-sued for dust damages of $120,338 and for an injunction preventing the company from casting dust upon their properties in injurious quantities. The issue was split, the jury deciding the amount of damages and the court handling the injunction features. The action came to trial before a jury in April of that year and resulted in damages being awarded in the amount of $7,508. A month later the court issued its injunction requiring recovery of stack dust to an 87 pct minimum.

Lime and dicalcium-silicate crucibles were equilibrated with molten iron and liquid slags containing iron oxide and small amounts of sulfur. The oxygen content of metal, iron oxide activities, and desulfurization values of the slags were determined in the temperature range 1530 to 1700°C. The influence of magnesia in the slag and the temperature dependence of the solubility of lime in liquid iron oxide and the ferric oxide content were established. The temperature contour of the liquidus surface of iron-silicate slags saturated with lime and dicalcium silicate was also established at 1600°C. THE importance of the role that slag composition plays in the refining of steel has been known for many years. Numerous studies have been made using actual plant data in order to establish the relationship between the composition of the slag and metal during the refining of a heat of liquid steel. These results rarely represent equilibrium conditions since completion of the various chemical reactions involved in steelmaking is seldom realized. In order to establish quantitatively the equilibrium conditions existing between the slag and metal, several laboratory studies have been conducted in the past 20 years to determine the reactions important in slag control. These investigations have included studies of simple liquid basic and acid slags as well as more complex slag systems which approach those commonly found during the refining of a heat of steel. Since most of the previous studies of simple basic iron-oxide slags equilibriated with molten iron were made in magnesia crucibles, it was not possible to establish the distribution of sulfur and oxygen between molten iron and slags consisting only of the three essential components, lime, silica, and iron oxide. This investigation was undertaken to establish the equilibrium conditions for simple lime-iron oxide and lime-silica-iron oxide slags. Accordingly, it was expedient to prepare crucibles both of lime and dicalcium silicate to establish the equilibrium conditions between molten iron and iron-oxide slags saturated with the refractory materials and free from other components. The only other studies of the equilibrium between molten iron and lime-saturated slags are those of Fischer and vom Ende, 1, 2 in which the solubility of oxygen was determined in an air atmosphere. The National Bureau of Standards received, in August 1940, a number of samples of bridge wire taken from the cables of the General U. S. Grant suspension bridge over the Ohio River at Ports- mouth, Ohio. These cables were 7% in. in diameter under the wrapping and each was made up of 1458 ungalvanized wires of No. 8 gage in 3 parallel-wire strands. The choice of ungalvanized wire was based on the previous satisfactory performance of similar wires in other bridges over periods of 20 to 50 yr. of service(1).2 After about 12 yr. of service a number of breaks were discovered in the Portsmouth bridge cables, most of them at the anchor- age shoes, and they were replaced by cables made up of galvanized wire(2).

THE high standards of living and improved national security that industrialization can bring are so evident that no country can be named that does not cherish the hope of industrializing. With such a universal aim, why do many countries unable to develop their own industries accomplish so little toward attracting the foreign private investor, who alone can provide them with the necessary capital and skill? Obviously, because they fail to under- stand what constitutes a favorable climate for investment, because they have false notions about being exploited or dominated by the foreign investor, or because they are so nationalistic they refuse to permit outside assistance. The purpose of this paper is to aid the citizens and policy makers of developing countries in achieving their aims, by defining the conditions which en- courage investment and portraying the results of a policy of encouragement. AS a member of the Institute and as the president of the National Coal Association, I come before you today in a dual role. As an Institute mem-ber I welcome the opportunity to make complimentary reference to the growing support which bituminous coal operators are giving to programs looking to the advancement of the engineering profession, and to suggest plans whereby these programs may be enlarged to mutual advantage. As a representative of the bitu-minous industry, it gives me special pleasure to express the appreciation of the industry for the services ren-dered to it by members of your profession. Needless to say, there is a close relationship between the engineer and the coal operator. With increasing frequency and in the interests of the industry, the engineer is becoming more of a factor in the business of producing coal. I need look no further for an out-standing example of this encouraging trend than to Samuel A. Taylor, who not only is a bituminous coal producer but also has risen to such eminence in the engineering profession as to have been chosen the head of this great body of technical men, the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. There are many coal operators whom I might mention as having achieved distinction in the engineering world, such as Howard. N. Eavenson, chairman of the .Coal and Coke Committee. And I would be guilty of a serious .oversight if I failed to make reference to Eckley B. Coxe, one of the founders of the Institute in 1871, a prominent anthracite operator and credited with several important inventions. While it is true that a. considerable number of execu-tives of coal-producing companies in this country came up through the engineering ranks. the proportion of mine executives in England, France, and Germany who are graduate engineers is much larger than it is in the United States. In France all members of the staff are engineers and such is the case in Germany up to the owner of the mine. In Germany the owner is not so frequently an engineer as is the rule in France.

Surface mining of coal is widely condemned as a despoiler of the countryside and wastrel of land and natural resources. Yet the fact has been as widely ignored that the ingenuity of those engaged in developing the methods and equipment utilized in surface mining have made several hundred million tons of coal available for utilities and industry which could never have been mined by any other method. While doing this, the surface mining companies have recovered nearly 100% of the coal in the mining area instead of approximately 50% as is common in underground methods. Efficiency has been increasing constantly, thereby maintaining low cost to the customer. Mining has provided economic health in many areas by virtue of the direct payrolls and by the attraction of other industries to enjoy low cost, dependable fuel supplies. Surface mining of coal generally falls into two categories: contour mining, which is the result of mining in hilly or mountainous terrain where the hillside or slope limits the width of the area which can be surface mined; and area mining, which results from the surface of the land being approximately parallel with the coal seam so that a wide area may be mined in a succession of pits or open cuts.

It seems to the writer that no very important improvements require to be made in order at least to keep up the present production for many years to come.
