ONE of the important problems in the design of structures and machine parts subjected to rapidly applied loads is the determination of the strength and ductility of the material itself under such conditions. Realizing the need for such information, many investigations have been carried out in the past. Most of these experiments have been made using notched bars in bending either with the Charpy or Izod impact machine. While yielding valuable data on the effect of notches in the energy absorption of the material and on the condition of heat-treatment, this form of test does not lend itself readily to a determination of fundamental stress-strain relations. For this and other reasons, more attention has been paid recently to the tension impact test. An extensive literature already exists on the subject and only those investigations somewhat closely related to the present paper will be mentioned. For a more comprehensive list, the reader is referred to the Symposium on Impact Testing of the A.S.T.M., 1938. The work of Mann,1 Clark and Dätwyler,2 Nádai and Manjoine,3 Winlock and Leiter,4 Deutler,5 and Brinkmann,6 however, deserve especial mention. In most of the previous investigations on the subject, when stress-strain relations were obtained under high rates of loading, it was the common procedure to determine stresses based on the original area and strains based on the original length. Stress-strain curves were then constructed by plotting [So = ooT as a function of eo =o] where A o and Lo refer to the original area and gauge length, respectively. At present there exists a paucity of true stress-strain data in the impact problem. The advantages of constructing so-called true stress-strain curves in order to reveal the fundamental physical properties of the material for the tension test were discussed recently by one of the authors? It was shown that the true physical behavior of the material in the tension test could best be represented by plotting the average true stress, [S = P] as a function of [e = q' = log A-le = log Lo] where P, A, L, S, [e], and q' refer to the load, the cross-sectioned area while the load P is applied, the actual gauge length, the average true stress, the true strain and true reduction in area, respectively. Besides giving a better physical representation, the method has certain additional advantages in that the stress-strain curve so plotted becomes a straight line from the maximum load point to fracture. The construction of such curves, however, while comparatively simple for the slow rates of loading customarily used in the tension test, presents certain difficulties for tensile impact in that both loads and diameters are required throughout the test. THE great activity with which the oil resources of the northern Cantons of the State of Veracruz have been developed has largely resulted from the great success obtained by the important explorations carried out since 1902 in the Ebano district in the North, and several years later near Tuxpam, in the South. It must not be thought that these successes were quickly obtained, since the preliminary studies by good experts, the acquisition of what were thought to be the most promising coast lands, the extensive clearing thereof, and finally the number of unsuccessful drillings at great depth, signified an original outlay of some ten's of millions of dollars before finding commercial oil. The discovery of oil in industrial quantities at Cerro de la Pez, Ebano district, and the famous Dos Bocas gusher some years later, which was burned, once and for all made famous the Veracruz coast, where today is concentrated the Mexican output of mineral oil. In .1917, this production was nearly 50,000,000 bbl. It is well known that this output represents only a fraction of what the wells in actual production can furnish, because with adequate means of transportation and storage, the present extraction could be somewhat over 300,000,000 bbl. a year. These enormous potential oil resources of the Veracruz coast proceed from a relatively small number of wells, scattered over a few oil fields, separated from each other by large unexplored areas, wherein may be found other favorable fields which, in time, will undoubtedly become just as great centers of oil production. Experts who know our Gulf Coast believe that lands with commercial oil resources lie not only between the Panuco amid Tuxpan Rivers, but that indications are that the oil zone of Mexico, with more or less interruption, takes in the coast zone from Northern Tamaulipas to the foot of the Sierra Madre of Chiapas, and the banks of the Usumacinta River. This generalization is not merely the outcome of optimism, but is the result of the persistency with which one finds, throughout this Gulf Coast, the most usual characteristics upon which we depend for recognizing oil-bearing lands.

GEOPHYSICS differs from geology and physics in many respects. In the first place, geophysics is a complex science embracing the fields of seismology, geomagnetism, geoelectricity, geodesy, meteorology, volcanology, physical oceanography, physical hydrology, tectonophysics and exploration geophysics. Geology is also a complex science and so extensive in its various fields that no one can master them all, and no part of geology deals in any sense with several of these fields of geophysics. In the second place, geophysics makes use of methods and instruments that are derived primarily from the science of physics. Geology, on the other hand, has methods of its own and it draws its borrowed techniques and its instrumental equipment not only from physics but also and perhaps primarily from chemistry and biology. The difference, therefore, between the geophysicist and the geologist lies partly in the phenomena that are observed, partly in the methods and instruments with which each carries on his exploration; but partly also, and perhaps principally, in the habitual attitude of mind and in the background of specialized training with which each approaches the problems presented by this planet of ours. The geologist as such, therefore, is no geophysicist. On the other hand, the physicist is not a geophysicist either. Isolation of each problem in a closed laboratory system under complete control is fundamental to the methods of the physicist. The geophysicist must apply physical instruments and physicomathematical reasoning to the study of physical quantities in their undisturbed natural environment. What, then, is a geophysicist? In the sense that he is a trained expert in all of the geophysical sciences, I do not believe that such a person ever existed. It would be beyond the possibilities of a single lifetime. I think there is confusion in our ideas and in our use of terms. We are not all thinking of the same thing when we say geophysics or geophysicist; yet we seem to talk as though we were. It is as absurd to say that the whole of geophysics belongs to geology because the field of a particular type of geophysicist-the exploration geophysicist -calls for some knowledge of geology as it would be to say that the whole of biology belongs to geology because a particular type of biologist-the paleontologistneeds some knowledge of geology. DEVELOPMENT OF A GEOPHYSICIST Since it is impossible to become an expert in all the fields of geophysics, and since students entering college seldom know the field they will choose as a career, what would we suggest as the best general preparation for work in geophysics, whether as a meteorologist, an oceanographer, a seismologist, a geodesist, a geomagneticist, a volcanologist, a tectonophysicist, a hydrologist, or an exploration geophysicist? THE Star shaft is near the north boundary of the group of mining claims belonging to the Ground Hog Unit of the American Smelting and Refining Co., near Vanadium, N. Mex. The shaft bins and surface plant are served by a siding from the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe railroad, and this factor of railroad transportation influenced the choice of site. This paper describes the shaft sinking only, and does not cover the surface plant or other parts of the mine or its equipment. Experience with this shaft seems of interest because of the mechanical mucking, good rate of progress, and the costs obtained at the present level of labor and material costs. The shaft has four compartments, as shown in fig. 1. Equipment: Riddell Mucker: The mucking was done by a clamshell bucket and a Riddell mucker, which, as in other shafts sunk with this machine, consisted of a carriage mounted on axles with double flanged wheels that traveled back and forth on a swinging track, parallel to the long axis of the shaft (fig. 2 to 6). Three air motors were mounted on the carriage; one hoisted the clam, one operated the bucket opening and closing device, and the third moved the carriage along the track. The carriage was designed with guide shoes and could be hoisted to the surface in either skip compartment without trouble (fig. 4). During blasting operations the clam was tied on the rails and the carriage was hoisted up a few sets to protect it from flying rock. No attempt was made to hoist the carriage and clam together lest the clam catch in the timbers. The track on which the carriage operated was built of extra heavy 6 in. pipe with 1x2 in. strap welded on top for rails. A 1/2x4 in. angle was welded on the bottom of the 6 in. pipe with a 1 in. round rod welded in the angle for a filler and additional strength. The end or cross pieces of the track which kept the track to gauge, were also made of reinforced, heavy 6 in. pipe and were bolted to the long members on which the carriage traveled (fig. 2 and 3). This section of track was used, instead of heavy railroad rails, for two reasons: (1) this section would bend before it snapped and was much safer for the men in the bottom; and (2) it was a better blasting shield, and protected the timbers better, in fact, only five wall plates were broken by blasting in 1926 ft of shaft, although 150 to 225 lb of 40 pct powder was loaded per round, depending on the ground conditions. The swinging track was supported by four 5/s in. hoisting cables anchored to the end plates. There were also four safety cables fastened two to three sets above the carriage, which would catch the carriage if one of the supporting cables should fail for any reason (fig. 7). Clamshell Buckets: Two clams were used, each of 3/s yard capacity, both manufactured by Blaw Knox, Nos. 662 and 663. The No. 663 clam was 4 in. wider and 5 in. shorter than the No. 662, but seemed to dig and load more satisfactorily. It was easier to hoist and lower when it came up for repair. IF IT IS true that Sir Walter Raleigh lost his head for his failure to find gold in the Guianas, the trumped up charge of "treason" might better have been "con-tributory negligence." That systematic investigation and development of the gold-bearing areas of both Dutch and French Guiana have not been accomplished is not due so much to the lack of gold as to the geo-graphical, physical and climatic conditions of the two colonies. The Dutch, as a people, are not prospectors. The French look upon "Cayenne," or French Guiana, as DJOEKA BOATS USED IN RIVER TRANSPORTATION. just what it is: a penal colony, which produces a certain amount of balata, gold and essential oils, all of which can be purchased from the natives with far less physical exertion than they can be secured from the "bush" or jungle. The colonies have had their gold "booms," and dur-ing these periods the production has increased to a considerable amount, but the hardships to be endured in reaching the fields, the cost of transporting tools and supplies, the ever-present fevers, the bite of the "57 varieties" of insects and, lastly but not leastly, the abundance of rum in the seaport towns, dampen the ardor of even the strongest; the production of gold is left to the "pork knocker" or illegal gold digger and to the comparatively few producing "mines."

THE axis of the middle portion of the Ural mountains is made up chiefly of highly compressed igneous and sedimentary schists, considered of Devonian age by the Russian geologists, with large areas of serpentine (peridotite originally) gabbro, etc., intrusive in the schist series. In addition there are large areas of probably older granitic and gneissic .rocks. The nickel deposits referred to in this paper are found in the Devonian schists and their associated igneous rocks. The gabbro-peridotite intrusions probably took place in late Devonian or early Permian time, inasmuch as the Permian and Carboniferous beds lie at gentle angles on the Devonian series on the west slope of the Urals. Perhaps the first attempt to work a nickel deposit in the Urals was made about 1866 in the Revdinsk district, which is situated southwest of Ekaterinburg. I was informed by a Russian that a wet method of extracting the nickel was tried but was not a commercial success. This deposit has been described by Müller,1 Foullon,2 and Karpinski.3 Beck4 gives an abstract of these papers.

Oil is found in commercial quantities in the islands of Sumatra, Java, Borneo, Tarakan and Ceram. The oil deposits of the Dutch East Indies and Sarawak are with one exception of Tertiary origin and as a rule are bound to anticlinal structures. The number of layers varies in most fields and in some of them asmuch as 14 oil-producing levels have been established. The crude oil varies rather much in composition. Some of it, particularly from North and South Sumatra, has a gasoline content up to 50 Per cent. Borneo produces mainly wax oil, while the Tarakan oil can be used directly as liquid fuel. In Java both wax and wax-free oil are produced. ' In all important fields installations have been erected to treat the wet gas. The lean gas is used for gas-lift purposes, Marietta process, and as fuel for boilers and motors, either in the fields or in the refineries. Formerly only percussion systems (Canadian, Californian and a drilling system devised especially for the purposes of the Royal Dutch Petroleum Concern) were applied in the Dutch East Indies, but in recent years the rotary system has been predominant and good results have been obtained with it. The deepest producer has recently been struck in South Sumatra at a depth of 1624 m. (5328 ft.), with a daily production of about 350 cu. m. crude oil. The crude is brought by an extensive system of trunk lines to the refineries, of which one is in North Sumatra (Pangkalan Brandan), two arc in South Sumatra near the town of Palembang, two in East ,Java (Tjepoe and Wonokromo), one in East Borneo (Balik Papan) and one in Sarawak (Miri). INTRODUCTION The stabilization of slopes is not a design problem. A slope is designed before it is made. For a slope to be stabilized it must already exist. The basic problem has existed for a long time. It started with cuts in soil and rock made in the 18th century during the construction of the canals which were developed at that time, and continued into the 19th century with the development of the railways, and in the 20th century with motor roads and lately open pit mining. It is not difficult to stabilize a slope, but certain questions must be asked and answered. These are: i) How much stability is required? ii) For how long is it required? iii) How important is the cost? These three questions indicate the basic problem of Civil Engineering, which is that the solution to any problem is a compromise between safety, cost and time. Stabilization of slopes is no exception. If the slope exists why is stabilization a problem? There are many possible reasons, for instance, a neighbouring and similar slope may have failed, or it may be necessary to change the conditions of the slope, steepen it, increase its height, put weight at the top, or construct a building at the foot in which case added security is required, or guarantee its stability for a longer time. MECHANISM OF FAILURE In order to pick the correct method of stabilization the mechanism of failure must be understood and the immediate cause of failure known. Often to remove the cause is the best remedy. The mechanism of failure has been studied over a period of many years in landslide problems. Pit slope failures are very similar to some types of landslides. (1) (2) (3) (4) In one sense there are many causes of landslides. Terzaghi lists 19. This means that there cannot be a standard solution to a stabilization problem. In another sense, it can be said that there is only one cause, which is gravity. (written discussion ?).-There are few mine officials who will not say that there is, great need of vocational schools in mining communities, but the absence of success of so many of these ventures makes them wary about establishing such schools. They have neither the time nor the facilities to study the systems and to analyze the factors that have made certain schools a success and others a failure. In the first place, it is difficult to secure the proper instructors. Educators cannot make the appeal to the workmen, because of their lack of experience, and experienced men who are capable of the appeal are not usually educators, knowing nothing about the presentation of the subject. Then, too, there is ordinarily no objective in a mine school. The workman is not reached by a school that makes him merely a more valuable man to his employer, unless he can participate in the gain. An objective, as promotion or financial gain, would appeal to the man and would make for regular attendance. Usually vocational schools are run like all others-a number of subjects at a time, continued from one day to another. This is impractical for the workman, whose mind cannot work like the mind of a school boy. The school boy is spending most of his time in school work, while the man is doing it as a side issue, and he cannot be expected to pick up tonight's lesson where last night's left off. The workman is accustomed to the idea of completing a job and doing one thing at a time; his mind is trained that way, and for this reason a school that works on the principal that each lesson is a complete job, with no reference to the previous or following lesson, will go a long way toward removing one of the things that has caused many failures. The usual vocational schools .in mining communities are either very elementary, or are run by the engineering staff and, consequently, are too advanced. There is no plan between. It is believed that there is a possibility of a halfway type, but this is a subject that is large enough for a paper by itself and is entirely, too broad to be presented as a discussion.

The first use of electric punched card accounting machines as an aid in calculating reserves at the Sullivan mine in Kimberly, B.C., was made in January, 1948. At that time their use was limited to totalling individual reserve blocks for the various reserve classes and for calculating total metal content. The immediate objective was to increase speed, improve accuracy, and to effect some savings in labor that could be employed more usefully elsewhere. It was recognized also that the potential for achieving even greater advantages was excellent. The initial experiment proved so successful that it was inevitable that the use of the method would expand. Thus, for the past nine years assay data from core hole and development headings have been processed by these machines and the results integrated with the program of calculating reserves. It was also learned that the machines could store and classify a large amount of other information concerning the mining characteristics of each reserve block in addition to tonnage and metal content. This has proven very useful for the preparation of monthly production reports as well as in long term planning, in forecasting production schedules, and in analysing the results achieved.

The value of the earth resistivity method in groundwater studies in Illinois has long been recognized. Owing to the sharp electrical contrasts between sand and gravel deposits and glacial till, alluvial silt or underlying shale, much of the earth resistivity prospecting has been of a relatively elementary nature and has been highly successful. Approximately 90 pct of earth resistivity interpretations by the State Geological Survey have been accurate for practical purposes. Four studies involving fairly simple geologic situations are presented in this paper as typical cases. FOR the past 20 years electrical earth resistivity exploration has been used in Illinois in many phases of study undertaken by the State Geological Survey, chiefly in locating and outlining deposits of water-bearing sand and gravel from which to obtain ground water for municipal and industrial supplies. At least 43 municipalities in the state derive their total water supply from deposits of sand and gravel discovered by resistivity methods. These deposits occur in both Quaternary and preglacial valleys and within much of the glacial drift which covers a large portion of the state. In recent years there has been much demand from rapidly growing municipalities for help from the Illinois Geological Survey to extend existing well fields. Water supplies for many and varied industries constitute a considerable portion of the Survey's studies. The diminishing need of water supplies for railroads has 'been accompanied by an increasing demand by the oil industry for water for secondary recovery programs. The instruments used by the Illinois Geological Survey follow closely the commutated direct current circuits developed by O. H. Gish and W. J. Rooney' using the Wenner2 electrode configuration. More recently replacement of the hand-driven commutator by a synchronous vibrator has led to increased ease of operation and accuracy. Continuing improvement of equipment and technique has led to many changes in the instruments, but the operating theory remains the same. In the field operation at a selected station, four electrodes are set at equal distances in the ground 6 to 10 in. deep, in a straight line. The major development in stabilization of the oil industry during 1933 was the transition in the United States from state control to federal control in many of the functions that government is presumed to exercise. A brief review of the influences leading to that transition is given here to suggest its significance and to assist in forecasting its further development. Bitumens were known to the ancients and have been applied to minor uses since earliest historic times, but it was not until after the discovery of oil in considerable quantities near Titusville, Pennsylvania, in 1859 that it was made the basis of extensive commercial undertakings. In 1859 little was known about the origin of oil and gas, the nature of these deposits, and the physical laws that controlled their accumulation. Scientists soon began to study them, but 50 years or more of active oil-field development had elapsed before sufficient geological information had been accumulated to point the way toward efficient recovery of these products. In fact, only within the past five years has the function of reservoir energy become widely understood, yet it is a primary factor in oil recovery. discovery near Titusville, this infant industry has developed into an industrial giant. In complete ignorance of their destructive effect, wasteful development methods were initiated in Oil Creek and these became industrial habits. These habits in turn became oil and gas law. Under that law vast sums of money have been expended, rights have become vested and development methods fastened on a great industry that not only bring upon it periodic demoralization but cause ruthless destruction of the nation's reserves of these important natural resources. This is occurring in the midst of a petroleum era when oil is essential to the nation's security, its industrial supremacy, and the personal convenience of every citizen. Its conservation, therefore, has become a question of grave national concern. IN the field of mineral exploration, 1956 can be looked upon as the International Geochemical Year. This is not because of unusual developments in geochemical prospecting but rather because of the world-wide effort in geochemistry and the realization that geochemistry is now an established exploration method. Use of mining geophysics has continued to increase. Those extensively employing exploration techniques indicate that developments of the past few years have permitted better programming of methods, from reconnaissance to location of drill- holes. There is greater diversification of methods- reliance is not placed on results of one. However, it is realized that often it is more economical to drill an anomaly than to conduct additional expensive geophysical surveys

MILNOR ROBERTS,* Seattle, Wash. (written discussion?).-The coal fields of Washington, on which Mr. F. A. Hill's paper gives much detailed information, lie on the western slope of the Cascade Range, which extends north and south through the State just west of its center. The mines are on the lower half of the slope, the lignite fields of Lewis and Thurston Counties extending into valleys and low hills west of the mountains. An exception is to be noted in the case of the Roslyn field, a small but important area which lies on the eastern slope.

THE investigation discussed in this paper concerns phase equilibria in the alumina-silica-water system. Studies in this system are part of a re¬search project sponsored by the Geophysics Branch of the Office of Naval Research2 directed toward increasing knowledge of the stability relations of metamorphic mineral assemblages. Inasmuch as metamorphic rocks consist largely of aluminosilicate struc¬tures, many of them hydrated, the system alumina-silica-water is a logical starting point for the systematic laboratory study of metamorphic mineral systems. Although logical, this is not, however, an easy approach to the problem because of the very great difficulty of obtaining transformations among structures in response to changes in temperature, pressure, and con¬centration. Commonly equilibrium among the phases in this system is exceed¬ingly difficult to attain. New laboratory techniques are required to produce certain structural rearrangements, such as inversion of diaspore to boehmite or the transformation of alumina-silica mixtures to andalusite or kyanite. Phase equilibrium data for the alumina-silica-water system are consequently only partly complete, and only a summary progress report is presented here. Crystalline phases in the alumina-silica-water system are numerous and many are common minerals. The oxide components exist as: quartz, tridymite, cristobalite, corundum, water, and ice. Binary compounds occurring naturally are: sillimanite, andalusite, kyanite, and mullite in the alumina-silica system and gibbsite, boehmite, and diaspore in the alumina-water system. The most abundant among the ternary compounds is the composition A12O3.2SiO2.¬2H2O, existing in the four structural modifications, kaolinite, nacrite, dickite, and halloysite. The hydrated form of halloysite, A12O3.2SiO2.4H2O, is here called endellite. Pyrophyllite, A12O3.4SiO2.H2O, is the third ternary compound of natural occurrence. In addition to these minerals, two other ternary crystalline phases have been encountered in this study. The first is a structure resembling montmorillonite and corresponding perhaps to the pure aluminian end member of the beidellite series. The other has a composition approximating A12O3.2SiO2.H2O but its composition and structure are still in doubt. JAMES P.. MUNROE.-The present situation is vastly different from the situation at the, time the paper was written. We now know pretty well what our problem with the disabled soldier is: 50,000 disabled men have come back and the Surgeon General tells us that probably 35,000 more are coming over in the months of March and April. So the total number of disabled men will be 85,000, which of course includes a great number of slightly disabled. If we followed the proportion that obtains in other countries, we would have about 10 per cent. of those people to be retrained under the Vocational Law. As a matter of fact, the general intelligence of our men is so much higher and the provision the government has made for the training off these disabled men is so much more liberal than with the other governments that we feel very certain indeed that instead of having 8500, men to be retrained there will probably be twelve and possibly fifteen thousand.

AN unusual thermal etch figure in copper is described and an explanation in terms of twinning is suggested. A flat polycrystalline specimen of OFHC copper cut from a rolled sheet was electro-polished in orthophosphoric acid and annealed at 950°C in a vacuum of approximately 10-3 mm Hg for 2 hr. The specimen was found to be thermally etched, the markings on the surface being consistent with the assumption that they were the traces of the (111) planes which are developed preferentially because they have the lowest free energy. However, on one grain (the grain shown in Fig. 1) the traces formed an almost regular pentagon and at first sight it seemed unlikely that they could all be (111) traces. These traces were studied further because it was thought that they might be a type of growth spiral. A fringe pattern showed that this was not so, the grain being sensibly flat and the only features having steps were the striations and the faint curved line passing out from the center of the pentagons. To obtain some additional information, the specimen was deformed in tension. The effect of the stress was first to cause the appearance of lines running from the centers to the apexes of the pentagons and then to tilt the five segments so formed. At a much greater stress, appreciable slip appeared on the grain; these effects can be seen in Fig. 2. The micrograph was taken at a fairly late stage in the deformation and the tilting is quite marked. The magnification is the same as in Fig. 1, and although some slip can be seen it could be observed better by varying the illumination and using higher magnifications. In each segment of the grain, slip (which takes place on the (111) planes) was parallel to the side of the pentagon in that segment. The marked changes in direction of slip from segment to segment seemed to be incompatible with the presence of a regular array of subgrains. These results suggest that some of the five segments were twins. If this is so, since the twinning plane in copper is the (111) plane, the radial lines must be traces of the (111) planes on the surface. From the symmetry of the striations about the radial lines, these planes must be almost perpendicular to the surface. The angle between <III>directions in face-centered-cubic copper is 70&apos;32&apos;. If, in Fig. 3, OAB (triangle 1) is taken as matrix and OA, OB are (111) planes viewed edge on, then AB is in the correct direction to be the trace of either of the other two (111) planes on the surface. If triangle 2 is the twin (about the (111) plane perpendicular to the surface and containing OB) of triangle 1, then once again it can be shown that all lines are traces of (111) planes. Similarly, triangle 3 is the twin of triangle 2, 4 of 3, and 5 of both 4 and 1. (The sequence is, of course, quite arbitrary.) However, if this were the case there would be a discrepancy of 7&apos;20&apos; to be accounted for. It is suggested that the faint curved line passing outward from the center of the pentagon represents either a low angle boundary or a sixth small twin. The slight step shown by the fringes at this line might be an indication that the former is the case. This explanation does not account for the coincidence of obtaining a grain whose surface must be so close to (110) and obtaining the curious twinning described previously; it would be of interest to find a specific mechanism for this.
