THE structural relations existing between cuprous oxide and copper -were first systematically studied by Heyn1', who suggested that a study of the microstructure of refined copper might be substituted for the analytical methods in vogue for determining the oxygen content of copper coming from the refining furnace. Hofman, Green and Yerxa,2 in their paper A Laboratory Study of the Stages in the Refining of Copper, working along the lines suggested by Heyn, showed that a study of the microstructure could be made to yield a correct estimate of the oxygen content of the specimen of refined copper under examination. In order to determine the oxygen content of the specimen of refined copper under. examination a photomicrograph was first made. From the relative areas of copper and eutectic, the percentage of cuprous oxide and the corresponding percentage of oxygen were then readily calculated. It was found that the values for oxygen thus obtained corresponded closely with the analytical results. With the idea of utilizing this method of determining the oxygen content of each charge dipped from the refining furnaces at the Boston & Montana Reduction Plant, the physical testing laboratory was equipped with suitable apparatus for carrying out the work. It may be of interest to describe certain of the methods which have been worked out in this connection and give such data as have been obtained bearing on the effect of the oxygen content of refined copper upon its conductivity. Apparatus.-For the benefit of those who may be unfamiliar with metallographical apparatus and methods and may be interested to know what equipment is required, a few words with regard to the apparatus is in place at this point.

A considerable interest in the subject of superlattices has been manifested by many papers and reviews that have recently appeared, both in physical and metallurgical publications. This interest is due largely to the apparent simplicity of the ordering process, which permits the explanation of many phenomena on the basis of elementary theory. Moreover, ordering may cause important changes in the physical properties of alloys. In this paper, we shall discuss the causes of superlattices in terms of simple properties of the elements that give rise to them, together with a series of experiments performed to test our conclusions. Evidence is presented that in some cases the process of ordering is more complex than might be supposed. While the different species of atoms are usually found in random positions in alloy lattices, in some cases unlike atoms tend to be nearest neighbors. Bethe's1 "order of neighbors" is a statistical measure of thib tendency. At suitable compositions it is possible for atoms in large regions to be regularly arranged, which causes superlattice lines to appear. in X-ray diffraction patterns. Bragg and Williams2 haw dealt with this "long-distance order" in their fundamental work 011 superlattices. The magnitude of the effect can be determined from the entropy of mixing, which is calculate from first principles. A theoretical analysis of alloy solidification in which the effective partition coefficient, k, of the solute is allowed to vary as a function of interface position is performed. A variety of solute distm'butions in the solid is predicted depending upon the functional dependence of k with interface position. Conversely, the variation of k with interface position required to produce a particular solute distributzon in the solid can be calculated. These preciictions have been tested by controlling the width of the momentum boundary layer in the liquid as a function of interface position with a rotating mugnetic field. One of the objects of controlled solidification is to utilize the freezing process for the preparation of crystals of specific materials containing a predetermined distribution of solutes. For example, a thermoelectric power generation material may exhibit a figure of merit, 2,' as a function of temperature, T, and solute concentration, C, as illustrated in Fig. 1. If we wish to use this material in a device between the temperature limits T1 to T2 a significantly greater efficiency will result from the device if the thermoelectric element illustrated in Fig. 1 consists of a range of solute concentrations appropriately located with respect to the temperature distribution rather than using a sample of constant solute concentration. In the equilibrium phase diagram of the Ni-Mo sys-tem1,2 available at present, intermetallic compounds (or ordered phases)ß(Ni4Mo) and ?(Ni3Mo) are known to exist to the nickel rich side. In our recent investigations on Ni-Mo alloys, however, it has been found that the quenched alloys from the high temperature region containing more molybdenum than the Ni4Mo do not decompose directly into 0 and when annealed isothermally below the peritectoid temperature, i.e., 865°C. This note is to report the existence of Pt2Mo type superlattice (possibly ordered Ni2Mo) as a metastable phase in the early stage of decomposition. Alloys containing 20.1, 22.7, and 24.4 at. pct Mo were prepared by vacuum-melting electrolytic nickel of 99.9 pct purity and molybdenum powder of 99.9 pct purity in an alumina crucible. From the resulting ingots, sheets 0.3 mm thick were obtained by forging, hot-, and cold-rolling. The sheet specimens were water-quenched from ! region and subsequently annealed for various periods of time at temperatures below the peritectoid temperature. On these specimens were made optical-microscopic and transmis-sion-electron-microscopic observations. THE results of an investigation of the ternary system iron-chromium-ilicon were reported in 1936 by the present authors.1 Partly for the sake of theoretical interest, and partly because of the possible commercial importance of these alloys, the present investigation was undertaken to determine the effect of some of the commoner elements likely to occur, deliberately or otherwise, in such alloys if made on a commercial scale. The elements thus added were carbon, nickel or manganese. The alloys studied were, therefore, parts of quaternary systems. This investigation was concerned primarily with the effect of these additional elements on .the alpha-iron phase and the boundary between this phase region and the alpha plus sigma two-phase region. The sigma phase is a ternary solid solution based upon the compound FeCr. The work was performed mainly by X-ray methods, but a number of microscopic examinations were also made and are reported. While isolated alloys in the composition ranges studied may have been discussed in metallurgical publications, no systematic investigation of any assistance to us was found. Of the earlier work, the investigations on the iron-chromium-carbon system and on the chromium carbides by Westgren and his coworkers,2,3 enabled us to identify the carbide phase. Several articles appeared after the present experimental work had been completed. Lucas and Wintrup4 determined the solubility of carbon ill molten iron-chromium-silicon alloys. Tofaute and his coworkers5,6 have made detailed studies of the iron-chromium-carbon system, which will he referred to later.

IT is now five years Since I called the attention of the Institute to the industrial importance of the coal and the iron ores of the Hocking Valley in Southeastern Ohio, and in a pamphlet on the region published Soon after, in 1874, endeavored to resume the principal facts then known respecting it, including the observations of the geological survey of Ohio, made and published up to the time by Professors Andrews and Wormley, together with an estimate of the probable future of the region, and its relations to the coal and iron markets of the country. Since that time the labors of the Geological Survey have included a further Study of the coal by Prof. Edward Orton, the results of which will be awaited with much interest. I may say from my knowledge of them, that while confirming the general conclusions of his predecessors, he has been enabled to add much to our knowledge as regards the correlation of the various members in different parts of the coal-field, and to Show more clearly the positions and the importance of the ore-beds in the Hocking Valley region. The only ore mined in that vicinity previous to 1874, was below what is called the Great Vein or No. VI coal, and to the west of what is known as the Hocking Valley coal-field, and although experiments in a few furnaces in the State had Shown that this coal could be used with advantage in iron-Smelting there was not a single blast furnace within the field. My observations at that time, however, impressed me with the abundance of iron ore, not only below but above this important coal Seam, and I then ventured to express the opinion that this region, from its cheap and easily mined Smelting-coal, its native ores and limestones, and its geographical position and relations to the great markets of the West, and to the supply of rich iron-ores from Lake Superior, was destined at no distant time to become a great metallurgical centre, where iron could be made more cheaply than at any other equally accessible point in the country. The object of the present communication is to report progress, and to State how far my observations made in the region last month have justified the predictions of 1874. The five years which have elapsed have been, as all know, most unfavorable to the iron trade, and especially to new enterprises in untried regions, yet they have not passed without important industrial developments in the Hocking Valley, where not less than thirteen blast furnaces have been erected

The eastern section of the Park City district is drained to an elevation of 6300 ft, by means of the Ontario drain tunnel owned and maintained by Park Utah Consolidated Mines Co. This elevation represents a depth of 920 ft, in Park City Consolidated Mines Company's property. When development below the 900-ft. level was commenced, sinking was attempted through an incline winze in the fissure. The intensely fractured quartzite forming the walls of the vein could not be held after water was encountered, so it was decided that further sinking should be done in a vertical winze far enough in the foot-wall to be in the more solid quartzite outside the fractured zone containing the vein. Progress was good until a depth of 200 ft. below water table was reached, where the flow of water became serious. Sinking progressed 300 ft., to the 1200-ft. level, and there approximately 750 gal. of water per minute was being pumped. The last 20 ft. of sinking cost more than $200 per foot direct charges, whereas the over-all cost for the 300 ft. was $100 per foot. This high last cost was caused by excessive lost time in pumping. Crosscutting to the vein disclosed the fact that the 1050-ft. level had been developed only after drainage had been effected from the 1200-ft. level, but that the 1200-ft. level could not be opened because of the great amount of water encountered when the fractured zone was intersected. The ground in the fractured zone is so finely crushed that it precludes any possibility of economic support when it is wet. Furthermore, mining costs were found to be prohibitive after caving of vein walls had taken place as a result of an attempt to drive drifts before complete drainage had been effected. More than 3000 gal. per minute was pumped from the 1200-ft. level and the water table remained 75 ft. above this plane even after five crosscuts were driven to the fractured zone at 50-ft. intervals along the strike of the fissure from a footwall drainage drift. It was evident, therefore, that complete drainage must be effected before the fractured zone could be opened in any future development. After extensive investigations in this connection, a well-drilling campaign was decided upon to effect drainage of the fissure in advance of sinking and level development, so that all mining operations would be carried on in dry ground. Drilling Procedure A crosscut was driven through the hanging wall of the fissure on the 1050-ft. level, which was the deepest dry level at the time, to a predetermined location from which a vertical hole should reach the fractured zone at about 400 ft. below this level. A drill station was made and a raise was driven over the location for the hole, to act in lieu of a derrick or drill tower. This raise

PONDERING the action of a ball mill employed to carry on comminution from the product of fine crushing to the point where flotation, cyanidation or other concentrating methods are applicable, one wonders where this machine had its origin. When Henry Wadsworth Longfellow reiterated the observation of that older poet Von Logau, and wrote “Tho’ the mills of God grind slowly, yet they grind exceeding small," he probably visualized the type of mill that was employed in medieval times for the production of flour, and can therefore not be considered as having gained admittance to the fraternity of millmen, on behalf of, either poet. He does, however, make it quite clear that the efficiency of even these Mills of Destiny was low, and to that extent voices a characteristic of fine-grinding equipment that has been the bugbear of all metallurgical engineers. PRINCIPLE OF BALL MILL The principle of the ball mill probably is traceable to the action along the coast line of oceans or lakes, or in the mountain streams. Wave action on rocks and pebbles, close to the shore line, gives the potential energy to the grinding media, which, in their rolling and tossing, break down the sands, and the resultant "pulp" carried out from the shore is classified and settles out in sizes ranging downward to extremely fine mesh. Surely, these are the real mills of God. If we allow our minds to dwell on the total tonnage that has been handled in this way, adding to the sands and clays at present in existence those enormous tonnages of metamorphosed sedimentaries, we sense the vast quantity of rock that has been so reduced. Is it not likely, therefore, that the answer to the beginnings of pebble milling, and eventually ball milling, came through the perception of this natural mill by one of our engineering forebears? METHODS OF GRINDING The relatively low return of mechanical input to a ball mill, in terms of useful work accomplished, has always intrigued me immensely. The potential energy absorbed by a ball raised to a high point in its path is apparently released with a very small return in useful work. Is the ball mill the most desirable means of fine grinding, or is there some other method through which we can recover a reasonable amount of the energy input in terms of useful work? Some years ago, on his retirement, H. W. Hardinge was questioned as to his thoughts on the trend of fine-grinding equipment. As I recall, his prophecy at that time was that the most likely field for improvement in grinding media would be toward a charge of flat disks with some mechanical scheme to cause them to slide over each other. Undoubtedly, Mr. Hardinge went through the usual experience of the muller and bucking board, the customary introduction of the budding millman to his calling. I have often wondered, but have never got beyond the wondering stage, as to the

The term "survival" in the title means the preservation of a society in which men are free from the political and economic restraints that characterize totalitarian systems, be they communist, socialist or facist. It means the ability to withstand the enemy's offensives in the fields of propaganda, commercial competition and, if necessary, war. The temptation to substitute "victory" for "survival" is great but a realistic appraisal of the creeping socialism and demagoguery that pervade our time indicates that we may have to be content with survival in status quo. "Mineral strength" means assurance that adequate supplies will be available to meet all the contingencies of cold and hot wars. The overall mineral position of the U. S. viewed in the light of these premises is far from secure. It is true that we are the leading producing and consuming nation of the world, but the Soviet Union is gaining and the Sino-Soviet Bloc confronts us with a sobering potential. The emergence of the Common Market in Europe as an economic and political unit places a third independent entity into the competition. Our total mineral output continues on an up- ward trend but the reverse is true in certain strategic commodities. Moreover, consumption is moving ahead faster than production so that there is increasing dependence on imports which has significant adverse geopolitical connotations. There is widespread belief that our resources can at least maintain present levels of self-sufficiency during this critical period in world history, but social dreamers, the labor monopoly, and trade and taxation policies have discouraged aggressive activity in exploration and development, and access to essential foreign sources is threatened by a variety of circumstances. Our stockpiles, belatedly built up to achieve minimum protection against shortages in time of war, are under. political attack and threatened with partial destruction on the basis of what are at best uncertain assumptions regarding the new: look of global warfare.

The placer gold occurrences at Sart Çayl, Manisa, Turkey, the legendary River Pactolus of King Croessus, were evaluated in this study to determine if this deposit contains sufficient recoverable value to justify development and exploitation. The gold occurs both in the upper Neogene conglomerates and the alluvium derived from these conglomerates. The total reserve in the whole region is estimated to be 500 million cubic metres. Samples were taken of the upper conglomerate and in the alluvium in an attempt to determine the amount and the physical nature of the gold. The gold in samples was recovered by screening out barren oversize followed by washing the sand and gravel through riffled sluices. The resulting sluice concentrate was later panned and amalgamated at site. Laboratory cyanidation testing of some samples for control purposes was also done. The average calculated free gold was found to be about 90-100mg/m3 and the size of gold flakes found was quite small. The field as well as laboratory testing of the samples of Sart Çay1 indicated that the potential reserves in this region could only be developed as a sand and gravel operation and the gold could be recovered together with the heavy minerals as a byproduct.

The early history of the mining and metallurgical industries of Pennsylvania is so intimately associated with the section of the State in which we meet, that a brief resume of a few of the important historical facts, and a reference to some of the more modern enterprises, in which members of the Institute have been largely concerned, seem appropriate to this occasion. It is just two hundred years since the publication of the earliest mention of the manufacture of iron in Pennsylvania. What kind of iron this was, or where or by whom it was produced, is uncertain. The only record of it is the following verse, quoted in the admirable work of Mr. James M. Swank,* from a poem published in 1692: " A certain place here is, where some begun To try some Mettle, and have made it run, Wherein was Iron absolutely found, At once was known about some Forty Pound." One who stood one hundred and seventy years ago on the summit of this Neversink Mountain † (had the atmospheric conditions been favorable, and the timber somewhat removed) might have noticed in the daytime the smoke, or at night the reflection, from the fires of the first successful Pennsylvania iron enterprises, scarcely 15 miles to the south, viz.: Rutter's bloomary forge, built in 1716, and the Colebrookdale blast-furnace erected in 1720, respectively 3 and 8 miles distant from Pottstown. Here the pioneers of iron production in the State which has so long led, and still leads all others in this manufacture, had their trials and successes ; and it may be a satisfaction to some who bewail a present depression in trade, and the low prices now ruling, to recall the fact that in 1731 pig-iron is reported to have been sold ''in large quantities" at the Colebrook-

NORMAN B. PILLING (author's reply to discussion *).-The discussion by Mr, Bassett raised one or two points that deserve further discussion. The printed figure for the lead content of the copper used was 0.015 per cent. and not 0.15 per cent., upon which his comment was based. A copper having the latter figure would, of course, be quite unusual. Mr. Bassett takes exception to the writer's statement regarding the distribution of cuprous oxide in wrought copper and states that "the FIG. 1.--ROLLED AND ANNEALED SHEET. ETCHED WITH AMMONIA AND HYDROGEN PEROXIDE. X 75. eutectic of copper with cuprous oxide is usually found between the crystals of pure copper, whether in the cast or the wrought form." While it is very well known that during the solidification of cast copper the cuprous oxide is segregated completely as an envelope of cuprous oxide-copper eutectic around the crystals of copper free from oxide, it is the writer's opinion that, as a result of repeated rolling, this eutectic structure is quite destroyed and the small particles of cuprous oxide become widely scattered, and in the recrystallization following, during annealing, the rearrangement of the grain boundaries takes place with much indifference to the actual distribution of these particles. In the accompanying micrograph, taken from a rolled and annealed sheet, the random distribution of the small cuprous-oxide particles with reference to the location of the grain boundaries may be seen.

INTRODUCTION Utilization from the Point of View of the Preparation Engineer The primary interest of the coal preparation engineer is in process design, operation, and maintenance to produce an acceptable product that can be sold at the greatest possible profit. Because of emphasis upon these interests, attention to other potential values of coal is sometimes neglected. The intent of this chapter is to alert the preparation engineer to the utilization possibilities of the product as well as the tributary coal flow moving through a modern coal preparation plant. The basis for any unrealized potential derives directly from the coal seam itself. Most coal seams consist of coal bands and benches sandwiched together in layers that differ visually from each other in physical structure and luster. Randomly selected physical and chemical ranges determined from layers of coal in a single seam can easily differ by as much as 30 Hardgrove grindability indices, 0.30 of a specific gravity point, 20 percentage points of ash, 6 percentage points of dry volatile matter, and 10 percentage points of total su1fur.l Similar wide variations exist for calorific value, seam moisture content, and, undoubtedly, for any other conceivable coal test parameter that might be used for comparative purposes. These observations all point to the long-established fact that coal is not homogeneous, as conventional analytical methods might tend to indicate, but is instead a highly heterogeneous substance.

The main problem in tunneling without the use of explosives lies in the development of tools capable of continuous mechanical destruction of rock, resulting in a fragmentation which lends itself to a smooth, uninterrupted transportation of the broken rock away from the tunnel face. While all moles of U.S. design mainly achieve this by crushing the rock by means of "disk cutters" or "roller bits," a boring system based on the principle of cutting the rock came into being in Europe, whereby the rock is worked in a manner very similar to the milling of metals. For tunneling purposes, this principle was first developed by the late Austrian engineer Wohlmeyer. Between late 1962 and the spring of 1965, the first experimental machine was tested in a German coal mine, working in coal and shale over a distance of some 3000 ft, divided over two runs separated by a period of time to allow for equipment modifications. In 1964, a collaboration was started between Wohlmeyer and the Habegger engineering firm of Thun in Switzerland. The normal Habegger range of equipment consists of aerial ropeways, ski lifts, and certain tool machines, to which in later years have been added monorail passenger-transport systems. One of these was installed as the main mode of transport at the 1967 World Fair in Montreal. After taking over the Wohlmeyer patents, Habegger further developed the original cutting principle, aiming at more robust machines in order to be able to tackle harder rock. A first machine was built and tested at a site near Thun in sandstone averaging 17,000 psi compressive strength and limestone of 25,000 psi. In May 1966 this machine was delivered to Japan for the boring of a pilot tunnel for the Honshu-Hokkaido railway connection under the sea. A second machine, incorporating many improvements based on experience gained with this first mole, was built during 1966 and tested in the same limestone as mentioned previously (25,000 psi), before being installed to bore the head race tunnel of the Julia hydroelectric power scheme near St. Moritz, Switzerland, in the early summer of 1967 (Fig. 1 ) .

ARSENIC and orpiment are two mineral substances of a similar kind, and they are by nature pure, without admixture of other species. In regard to their apparent qualities we shall say that their composition is scorched, well-purified earth; and because of a certain subtlety and easy digestion they penetrate very easily into fused metals, indeed they act in such a way that they corrupt and convert almost into another nature any metal with which they find themselves. Orpiment and arsenic act in almost the same way as do tin and mercury. With these the fraudulent alchemists blanch copper, brass, and even lead to the whiteness of silver. According to the physicians they are in fourth part hot and dry. They are also corrosive because of certain powers; indeed, they are a most powerful poison to the life of all things. Arsenic is found in white and citrine colors. Orpiment seems to be a separate thing, although both are formed in the same ore and both are in lamellae or scales.
