The phosphate pebble-bearing matrix in the Florida Phosphate Pebble Field has physical properties which make it readily adaptable to hydraulic transportation methods employing solids-handling pumps and pipelines. The abundance of water available, a practically flat terrain, low costs per ton-mile, and beneficiation of the matrix by agitation while being pumped have contributed to the popular choice of hydraulic transportation. Phosphate pebble mining in Florida, begun in the 1860's, first used high pressure water and solids-handling pumps for overburden removal about 1900. Removal of the average 25 ft of overburden was followed by hydraulic mining of the matrix, with 6-in. and 8-in. pumps handling 50 to 100 cu yds per hour being moved along the floor of the pit as they were advanced toward the face being undercut and slurried by hydraulic guns.

A special meeting of the Alaska Mining and Engineering society, held at Perseverance Mine of the Alaska Gastineau Mining Co. on Mar. 17, 1017, was attended by 46 members and about 80 guests, among whom were members of the Alaska Territorial Legislature. After an interesting trip through the mine in the afternoon, the members and guests assembled for dinner at the Perseverance Dining Room. After the dinner G. T. Jackson, assistant manager of the company, as president of the society, called the meeting to order. After the reading of the minutes, he welcomed the guests and then gave a short history of Perseverance Mine. B. L. Thane, manager of the company, briefly out-lined its general organization. The following papers were read-by members of the society and members of the staff of the Perseverance Mine: "The Organization of the Mine Staff and the Methods of Mining," by B. B. Nieding, Mine Supt.; "Tramming Equipment and Costs," by R. R. Van Valkenburgh; "The Surveying of the Mine," by R. L. Healey, Mine Engineer; "The Electrical Equipment of the Mine," by W. S. Pullen, Supt., of Power Supply; "The System of Mine Accounting, "by E. J. Doherty, Mine Accountant; and "The Mine Buildings," by D: J. Argall, Asst: Mine Supt. M. T. Tolch, Transportation Supt., described briefly the general transportation of the ore to the mill and the equipment used.

THE absence of paraffin and other oil hydrocarbons in the soil, although they are concentrated in extensive deposits in some localities, the common distribution of plant remains through many formations that .are not productive for oil, and many other factors, seem to indicate the existence of an intermediate organic compound between the complex plant compounds and the petroleum hydrocarbons; and much evidence points to the humus acids or associated organic compounds, which are probably collected by surface waters and concentrated in certain areas by means of precipitation by electrolytes, which would be contained in sea water or possibly in various inland seas or lakes. PRESENT-DAY EVIDENCE There are many present-day evidences of the association of petroleum with humus acids. Binney, in 1912, made observations without explanations on the peat mosses of Down Holland, England, where he found petroleum being formed by decomposition, in the presence of an infiltration of sea water. The analysis of a typical peat will show its relationship to the humus acids under consideration. SAMPLE 'No. 1, SAMPLE NO. 2, PER CENT. PER CENT. The University of Illinois, by Prof. H. H. Stock, professor of mining engineering, sent out to its mining students a long letter urging them to attend a Chicago meeting of the Institute. It stated that the University Council authorized the remission of the registration fee for sophomore, junior and senior mining engineers who would attend the meetings and present a written account of the sessions and excursions attended. Young engineers are rarely flushed at the beginning of their careers but if they ever expect to amount to anything at the end of 10-years-they are going to regret that they have not long been a member of the Insti-tute. So that the slogan "Do it now" is snore than particularly appli-cable in their cases and nothing will better indicate to them the scope of the Institute's work and the advantages which they are to get from mem-bership than attendance at one of the big meetings of the Institute and the preparation of a written report on the sessions and excursions attended to be returned to the University.

Meeting of April 24, 1914.-President Thayer announced the appointment of the Committee on Safety and Sanitation. The Committee on Nominations for officers for 1915 was appointed, as follows: William J. Cox, Chairman; H. Poster Bain, Joseph Daniels, Charles E. Mills, R. V. Norris, E. Gybbon Spilsbury, and Herbert A. Wheeler. The request of twenty residents of Salt Lake City and vicinity for permission to establish the Utah-Nevada Local Section was granted and R. C. Gemmell was appointed Chairman of the Committee on Organization. The following resolution was adopted: Resolved: That under authority of Article V, Section 7, of the Constitution, a special Committee be and hereby is appointed, to consist of the President and six other members of the Institute, to be named by him, Who shall be authorized to appear before the proper authorities at Washington and urge that Mining Engineers be appointed upon the proposed Commission for revision of the Federal Mining Laws. Further Resolved: That the activities of this special Committee be restricted to the authority given in this resolution.

The Institute has prepared a list of Societies' publications, magazines, . etc., which were duplicates and were discarded at the time of the consolidation of the libraries of the three Founder Societies. These books will be disposed of about March 1, 1916 by the Board of Directors of the Institute through the Library Committee. If, meanwhile, members who have incomplete sets of these books, or for any other reason desire to secure some of them, they are asked to communicate immediately with the Secretary, as this is in unusual opportunity to secure books at a very low price. In response to Dr. Ledoux's paper, a large number of metallurgical establishments and individual assayers expressed their willingness to co-operate in the plan he proposed. The necessary samples were prepared as follows : Matte.—A car-load of matte was put through a Blake crusher, then automatically subdivided into tenths by a Taylor and Brunton sampler, and one-tenth passed through Cornish rolls and through a 12-mesh screen. This was again subdivided by an automatic sampler into tenths, and a final tenth, representing 1 per cent. of the original lot, was finished by hand-sampling on an iron floor until 100 pounds remained. This was pulverized to pass a 40-mesh screen and then thoroughly mixed and divided in the presence of my assistant for distribution to the parties co-operating. Copper Borings.—These were taken from a lot of anodes, the dip-samples from several batches having been united, remelted and cast into a plate, which was proved by assay to be of uniform quality in its different parts. Borings from this plate were intimately mixed and divided in the presence of my assistant. Samples were sent out November 1,1894, with the following letter: New York City, November 1, 1894. Samples of matte and copper (about I pound each) carefully prepared in the presence of my assistant and sealed with his seal as below, are sent you by express for assay and report according to the plan of Dr. Ledoux. ALL of our accounts of the discovery of copper ore at Ducktown, Tenn., state that the discovery was made in August, 1843, yet it would appear that samples of copper from this district were found by the Spanish explorer, DeSoto, when he wandered into Southern Tennessee, in 1539, in his four years of exploration through the Southern States. The following quotation is taken from his diary: "Towards the north there was a province named Chisca; and that there was a melting of copper, and of another metall of the same colour, save that it was finer, and of a farre more perfect colour, and farre better to the sight, and that they used it not so much, because it was softer. And the selfe same thing was told the governor in Cutifa-Chiqui, where we saw some little hatchets of copper, which were said to have a mixture of gold. But in that part of the country it was not well peopled; and they said there were mountains, which the horses could not passe; and for that cause, the governor would not goe from Cutifa-Chiqui directly quicker." DeSoto sent two of his company to try to find these mines, but after five days' wandering through the mountains they returned, stating that their guides had become lost. Although the Ducktown area may have been known to the ancient Indians, it was not until August, 1843, when a Mr. Lemmons, who was panning for gold on Potato Creek, in the Ducktown basin, found some reddish-brown decomposed rock, which he supposed to be gold, that the copper deposits were actually discovered. His disgust on finding that this yellow metal. was not gold was so great that he did not. try to develop his find. In March, 1847, B. C. Dugger erected an iron forge at this same place, but was unable to work the iron as it contained so much copper that on cooling it would break to pieces. The finding of copper in the iron ore by Mr. Dugger led to further explorations; and in April, of the same year, A. J. Weaver, who was passing through that country, told the people that the black rocks they had dug out were rich copper ore. Mr. Weaver began the first mining in this district.

Prior to World War I, zinc was universally made by the distillation process. Small plants were operated at Cockle Creek, N.S.W., and Port Pirie, S.A. Then the electrolytic process was developed at Great Falls, Mont., in 1915 and at Trail. B.C. encouraging the Broken Hill companies to investigate the process. England's war-time need for zinc gave impetus to the development, and the site at Risdon, Tasmania, coincided with the developing hydro-electric power there. Experimental work was begun in 1917 by a proprietary company formed and owned by Broken Hill interests. Then in 1920, the principal features of the process having been established, a public company. Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Ltd. was formed, now known as E.Z. Industries Ltd.

The following Nominating Committee having been already appointed and approved by the Executive Committee in accordance with authority vested in the Executive Committee by the Board of Directors, was approved by the Directors: John V. N. Dorr, Chairman, Percy G. Beckett, J. W. Hutchinson, Julian Kennedy, William H. Linney, Charles W. Merrill, and E. Gybbon Spilsbury. The question of the purchase of Liberty Bonds, as well as that of bringing to the attention of the members the advisability of the purchase of these bonds, was referred to the Finance Committee. Sixty Members, four Associates, and thirty-six Junior Members were elected. Two Members were reinstated. Eight resignations were accepted.

This magazine contains articles on a wide variety of subjects, as do most technical magazines. Several years ago the engineering societies of Colorado turned over to the Public Library of Denver their technical libraries and the Public Library now has a Technical Department serving engineers This library has been enlarged and is supported by the state as well as the engineering organizations of Colorado A bimonthly New Books List is sent out from the Technical Department to all engineers on the mailing list. Books will be lent for the cost of transportation The Technical Department endeavors to keep a file of all state and some foreign publications on mining, geology and engineering Effort will be made to borrow from other sources, any publications which are not on file. The Technical Department does research, compiles bibliographies and answers reference questions. For the past several years the policy of a large section of our mining industry in relation to our present bureaucratic form of government has become increasingly amusing, if not a little disgusting. In the past, mining men have always featured themselves the self-announced champions of free enterprise, and, generally, this conviction, was substantiated by their deeds. In recent years, however, a large group of the industry, while still expounding, from the front porch, the principles of free enterprise and a sound economy based upon the law of supply and demand, have gone around to the back door with palm extended, to join labor, farmers, bureaucrats, and other pressure groups to get their share of the take. The procurement of subsidies, bonuses, increased metal prices, and government assistance in a multitude of forms seems to have obscured from their thinking the welfare of the country as a whole and the sounder economic principles of a balanced budget and lower taxes. At the recent Colorado Mining Association convention in Denver, I. was alarmed to see just how far this specialinterest type of thinking has progressed within the mining industry. Government assistance to mining. was generally considered inadequate, and a flat bonus for any new mineral discovery was proposed. It was disquieting, too, to learn how far the federal alphabet agencies have entered into the mining industry and of the thousands of highly paid technical. men on the federal payroll required to man these numerous overlapping agencies and bureaus. Now all this is very fine, and some aspects of the federal give-away program can be very appealing to the unsuspecting in the mining industry as they have been to those in other groups. Some of these expensive programs may bring about a few dividends or even several new mines. But to this whole line of pump-priming reasoning there is one big disastrous fallacy.

Discussion of the paper of PAUL BILLINGSLEY, presented at the New York meeting February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 97, January, 1915, pp. 31 to 47. JAMES F. KEMP, New York, N. Y.-Mr. Billingsley has spoken so concisely that we may not realize the many important topics which he has passed in review and upon which lie has thrown much illumination. The exact determination of the age of the granite, itself, is one. If we were to look over a geological map containing the region of Butte and 25 years old, we would find this coarsely crystalline mass assigned, as were others of its kind, to the pre-Cambrian, or as we used to say, to the Archean. In the course of time it was found to be later. The Butte Special Folio, 1907, described it as post-Carboniferous and possibly post-Laramie. Mr. Weed in Professional Paper No. 74 of the U. S. Geological Survey (1912) placed it as probably Niocene because of its relations with the andesite, which was believed to be Eocene. Mr. Billingsley now by a very neat demonstration circumscribes it more definitely and we recognize that it must be latest Cretaceous or earliest Eocene. We see, however, that extensive field observations, ably correlated, were necessary to establish the conclusion. For some years all familiar with Butte have known that there was a central area the veins of which carried copper ores in a quartz gangue; and that outside this area there were veins carrying silver ores in a gangue of manganese minerals. Mr. Sales's able and detailed paper, read at the Montana meeting, August, 1913, not only corroborated these relations, but emphasized the transitional character of the intermediate or passage zone. Mr. Billingsley is now able to show from observations at increasing depths, the tendency of the copper ores to appear deep down in the veins

DORSEY HAGER, Tulsa, Okla.-I have been asked why the Dexter region is dry. I would like to know myself. I drilled two dry wells on that same anticline which has production to, the east and west and south and north. That same anticline has seven domes that have been drilled and only three have proven productive out of the seven. In other words, you have one well-defined anticline with seven domes along its length, all mappable, all checked carefully, and only three of those seven have produced. Now why the others did not produce, I do not know. L. L. HUTCHISON, Tulsa, Okla.-There is no appreciable difference in the character or structure of the sands? DORSEY HAGER.-NO, I have never .been able to see any appreciable difference in the sands where we got production and Where we did not get it. I will say that the deepest wells we drilled, in the vicinity of Dexter, had no sands at the point where they got the production farther north. I. N. -KNAPP, Ardmore, Pa.-I first went to the Kansas-Oklahoma field in 1895 and occasionally thereafter until 1899, when I began drilling; for oil. I started close to wells that were producing gas and which, when drilling, lead made good oil showings in a sand above the gas. I thought these showings were good enough evidence of an oil pool for me without looking for any anticline and I made a paying development in what' I was afterward told by geologists was probably a synclinal trough. If I remember correctly Dr. Orton's report on the lola gas pool (about 1898) he distinctly said that he found no evidence of anticlinal structure and concluded from the records of a large number of wells that there, was a terraced structure of the productive gas sands, of which there were no surface indications.

The depression of dithiophosphate by phosphate was investigated by correlating radiotagging measurements of competition in sorption with measurements of flotation. Competition in sorption was as complex as the sorption of the individual ions, thus strengthening the conclusion that more than one process was involved in the interaction of the ions with galena. The depression of flotation was chiefly a result of reducing the amount of dithiophosphate sorbed.

EVER since his college days at the University of Iowa, the professional interest of Morris Morgan Leighton has centered on geology, and he now heads the State Geological Survey of Illinois. Just 52 years ago--on Aug. 4, 1887-he was born at Wellman, Iowa. He remained at the State university for his Master's degree, awarded in 1913. A two-year fellowship at the University of Chicago led to a Ph. D. degree, after which Dr. Leighton went out to Seattle as instructor in geology at the University of Washington during 1915-'16. He returned to Iowa as assistant professor of geology at Iowa State Teachers' College for a year, followed by another year at Seattle, after which he returned permanently to the Middle West, first as acting professor of geology at Ohio State and then, from 1919 to 1923, as assistant professor of geology at the University of Illinois and geologist for the Illinois Geological Survey. Of the latter organization he has been chief since 1923, with no present teaching duties. As a result of the successful work of the Survey, notably in non-metallics and in the initiation and stimulation of the recent oil activities in the southern part of the State, it is soon to have a new building with modern laboratory facilities.

THE alloys of gold and iron were investigated in 1907 by Isaac and Tammann,1 who determined the thermal diagram for the entire system by thermal analysis and microscopic examination. They also reviewed the previous literature. Since that time the present authors have been able to find only two additional references. Guertler and Schulze2 examined the electrical resistance of iron alloys containing up to 40 per cent by weight of gold between 0° and 200° C.; the alloys were in the form of wires. The main result of this work was to confirm the solid solubility limit found by Isaac and Tammann; namely, about 20 per cent Au. More recently, Shih3 has examined the magnetic properties of gold alloys containing up to 10 weight per cent iron and particularly the range below 5 per cent. The alloys in the lower range were found to be paramagnetic; the 10 per cent alloy was ferromagnetic. The present investigation was undertaken to determine the solid solubility limits at various temperatures, particularly below the a-y transformation point of iron, since these solubilities are of some impor-tance in connection with the working of the alloys in the manufacture of certain "grey" and "blue" golds.

QUESTIONS raised during earlier investigations of the preferred orientation in titanium1 and zirco-nium sheet led to the examination of the rolling and annealing textures of beryllium and hafnium sheet. Since the c/a ratios are 1.568 and 1.584, less than that of ideal close packing, 1.633, it would be expected that the preferred orientations would be similar to those exhibited by zirconium and titanium. This was found to be true. However, in several regards the orientations observed for beryllium differed from those reported by Smigels-kas and Barrett4 and so are given here. The okientations for hafnium are presented since only the cold-rolling texture has been reported in the unclassified literature. The pole figures were determined by transmission using an X-ray spectrogoniometer with copper Ka radiation and the automatic pole-figure recorder designed by Geisler described previously.6 The intensity units in the pole figures in this case are only arbitrary since calibration against a random sample of the same material was not considered necessary for the original purpose of the examination. The beryllium sheet, cold-rolled from 0.036 in. to 0.006 in., a reduction of about 84 pct, exhibited a split texture with the [1010] direction in the rolling direction as shown in Fig. 1. The same specimen annealed in vacuo for 1 hr at 1000°C showed no change in orientation. These textures
