Although determining and controlling specific gravity of operating medium in a heavy-media plant manually presents no problem, there are advantages to automatic recording and control. The two installations discussed employ the usual method of measurement. Pneumatic control with band control and reset features is used to regulate dilution water and hence specific gravity. Difficulties have been mechanical in nature and associated with obtaining a proper sample and maintaining tight air connections in bubble-tube piping.

It was said by many who discussed Professor Posepny's admirable paper on the "Genesis of Ore-Deposits," read at the Chicago meeting of the Institute, in 1893, that its most valuable feature was the clear distinction which it drew between the influence upon ore-deposits of the " vadose " circulation of waters descending directly from the surface, and that of the deep underground circulation of waters generally coming from the depths, and assumed by the author to be ascending through more or less open spaces under the influence of heat. A little later the effect of the oxidizing action of the vadose circulation upon ore-deposits was ably and exhaustively treated by Prof. R. A. F. IT is an outstanding fact of Nature that many of the practical properties of substances are dependent, not on their ultimate chemical composition, but on the kind and degree of aggregation of their constituent particles. Thus, a granite boulder is unmoved by wind or water, but if reduced to a fine dust it will be blown about by the wind and washed away by the rain. Carbon in one crystalline state of aggregation (diamond) is the hardest known substance, whereas in another crystalline state (graphite) it is so soft that it is used as a lubricant. Laying too much stress on the mere chemical analysis of substances is apt to obscure the fact that the nature of the aggregation of their particles is always a factor of importance, and sometimes the most important factor. Colloid chemistry deals with matter in. a very fine state of subdivision; its sphere begins with particles just a little smaller than a wave length of light-and extends clown until they blend into molecular dimensions. With particles of this size; such phenomena as surface tension and adsorption, which depend on the development of free surface, become enormously magnified. Thus a cube of 1 cm. edge has a surface of only 6 sq. cm.; but if it is reduced to colloidal dimensions by being cut up into cubes each having an edge of 0.01 , (0.00001 mm.), it will yield one million, million, million (1,000,000,000,000,000,000) such cubes, having a combined area of 600 sq. in., or 21,274 sq. ft. The tiny force with which a drop of rain clings to the window pane becomes a. factor to be reckoned with, if the surface involved is increased millions of times. From the colloid-chemical viewpoint, metals and alloys may be regarded as jellies or sponge-like structures, the viscosity or stiffness of which at ordinary temperatures is exceedingly great; and like all jellies their properties are dependent on the composition and degree of dispersion of their constituent phases. From the chemical, metallurgical, and mineralogical points of view, the importance of thermodynamic data for metal-sulphides and sulphur dissolved in molten metal has long been realized. Such data will give a basis for thermo-dynamic calculations of processes such as roasting and the distribution of sulphur between molten metal and slags. Furthermore, it will help us understand the chemical forces which tie sulphur to the metal and to the melt. Thermodynamic studies of solid sulphides and the equilibria between solid sulphides and metals have been carried out in a rather large number of cases by several investigators. An excellent review of this work is given by Kelley.1 On the other hand, very little is known about the thermodynamic properties of molten sulphides and of sulphur dissolved in molten metal. The only system which previously has been investigated in this respect is the iron/sulphur system. The purpose of the present investigation was primarily to obtain further data for metalisulphur melts and the system silver/sulphur was chosen, not because this system was expected to be of special interest in itself, but because the silver/sulphur system is a typical example of a metal/sulphur system. Because of the low melting temperatures, the work could be carried out without appreciable furnace and refractory difficulties. The sulphur in this system possesses a rather high escaping tendency compared to most other metal/sulphur systems. By the method employed (reaction with hydrogen to form hydrogen sulphide) this gives ratios Ph2s/Ph2 up to 0.30, which may be determined accurately. 'rhermodynamic investigations of the heterogeneous reaction Ag2S +H2 —+ 2Ag + H2S have previously been carried out by Pelabon,2 Keyes and Felsing,3 Jellineb and Zakowski,4 Wat-anabe,6 and Britzke and Kapustinsky.6 Their results are in rather poor agreement. Experimental Part PRINCIPLE In the present invehgation the escaping tendency of sulphur from the condensed phase was determined by the reaction: S + H2 = H2S The ratio Ph2s/Ph2 is at constant temperature, directly proportional to the escaping tendency of sulphur and to its chemical activity in the condensed phase. (This ratio will subsequently be denoted by H2S/H2.) From this ratio and its variation with temperature and with change in the com- position of the condensed phase, thermodyrlamic quantities such as free energy and heat of reaction can be derived. The apparatus used is shown in Fig 1. The silver/sulphur alloy was placed in a crucible inside a refractory tube and mounted inside the furnace to the left. The tube was a part of a closed, gas-tight system in which the gas mixture could circulate until equilibrium was established. Circulation was maintained by the glass propeller to the right, driven by an external magnet, and promoted by the chimney action of the furnace. The gas passed up through the furnace, down into the crucible where it came in contact with the alloy, passed rapidly up through a narrow tube and out of the hot zone. After equilibrium was established between the gas and the condensed phase, the composition of the gas mixture was determined from its density. In its circulation, the gas mixture passed through a chamber (lower right on Fig 1) containing a buoyancy-balance, where the density of the gas was determined by magnetic balancing. THE binary aluminum-silicon alloys have certain characteristic advantages which are now well known, and these alloys have come into considerable use during the past several years.1 Their field of application has been limited to a certain extent, however, by their low yield point and hardness, low endurance limit, and relatively poor machining characteristics. These properties are improved by the addition of copper, and the ternary aluminum-silicon-copper alloys constitute an important class. The addition of copper decreases the corrosion resistance of the aluminum-silicon alloys and increases specific gravity. Magnesium is a hardening addition which seems to have relatively little effect on corrosion resistance, and which, of course, reduces specific gravity. The object of the work described in this paper was the development of alloys and heat treatments for the production of sand castings and permanent-mold castings having substantially all the advantages of the binary aluminum-silicon alloys together with mechanical properties improved to a degree permitting wider application.

This paper will describe the development and application of large-scale integration techniques employed in the fabrication of a germanium multielement array. The array consists of 100 by 228 PNP bipolar transistors fabricated on 5 mi1 centers. Back-biased p-n junction techniques are used for electrical isolation of the individual elements. The end use of the array is a high resolution, large area IR sensor. The monolithic array is fabricated in 1 ohm-cm p-type germanium epitaxially deposited on 6 ohm-cm n-type substrate. Epitaxy was accomplished through the hydrogen reduction of germanium te trachloride. Di-borane was used as the dopant. Base regions are achieved by the diffusion of arsenic from doped oxide or arsine sources. Oxide-masking of the arsenic im-pzlvity was achieved by the chemical deposition of a boron doped glass. The emitter is formed by an aluminum alloy diffusion technique. Vacuum deposited aluminum is used for the emitter, interconnections, and for the contact and bonding pads. ALTHOUGH a great volume of literature pertaining to the development of large scale integration techniques (LSI) has been published for silicon and in particular silicon imaging applications,' to date only a small number of similar devices have been constructed using germanium technology.' Since the physical and chemical properties of germanium are vastly different from those of silicon, the fabrication technology for integrated structures in germanium is also different from that of silicon. In particular germanium does not possess a stable oxide as can be grown on silicon by heating in an oxidizing ambient for masking of dopants and passivation. This paper describes the application of germanium LSI techniques employed in the fabrication of a multielement infrared sensor array. The array is used in a high resolution, large area infrared sensor for operation in the 0.8- to 1.5-u spectral range. Back biased p-n junction techniques are used for electrical isolation of individual elements. Discrete germanium devices have been fabricated routinely for some time. However, mainly due to the lack of a suitable mask for selective doping and the high current leakages inherent in germanium p-n isolation, few monolithic germanium structures have been constructed. THE INFRARED MOSAIC A cross-sectional view of the array is shown in Fig. 1. The monolithic structure consists of 12,800 PNP transistor elements in a 100 by 128 matrix fab- ricated on 5 mil centers. The emitters of each line of transistors are connected together using aluminum interconnects while the strip collectors are connected together in series at right angles to the emitter lines. The selection of this structure is dictated by the readout technique involved. Access to each element transistor is obtained by applying a bias voltage to a particular collector strip and separately interrogating each emitter row. A charge storage, i.e., an integration mode is used for reading out this particular array Construction techniques available for use with germanium do not include a selective p-type diffusion capability for surface concentrations greater than 10" per cu cm and junction depths greater than about 10 u. This fact limits the type of structure that may be used. Therefore, an array of PNP transistors that did not employ p-type diffusions was chosen. The structure was fabricated by growing a 1 ohm-cm p-type epitaxial layer on a carefully prepared 6 ohm-cm n-type substrate. N-type dopants were used for the isolation and base diffusions and alloyed aluminum was used to form the emitter junctions. The array was then completed by evaporation of aluminum interconnections and contact pads. SUBSTRATE AND SUBSTRATE PREPARATION Germanium substrates of (111) orientation grown by both Czochralski and zone leveling techniques were utilized for mosaic fabrication. Czochralski substrates were preferred because of the lower dislocation densities available in this type of material. Dislocation densities for the Czochralski material were typically less than 3000 per sq cm, while those for the zone leveled material were typically less than 5000 per sq cm. All substrates were uncompensated to minimize thermal conversion problems in subsequent epitaxial and diffusion processing. Both in-house and vendor polished wafers were used. The in-house polishing technique employed consisted of an initial gross chemical etch in CP4 to remove saw damage from both surfaces. This was followed by a chemical-mechanical polishing operation of one side of the wafer. The chemical-mechanical polishing solution used was Lustrox 1000 (Tizon Chemical Co.), and consists of zirconium dioxide, sodium hypochlorite, water and a surfactant. The wafer thickness before and after polishing was typically 0.020 and 0.010 in, respectively. THERMAL CONVERSION The problem of thermal conversion of both the substrate and epitaxial layer was particularly acute because of the relatively low carrier concentrations employed in both regions. Rhyolitic welded-tuff wallrocks of the epithermal base and precious metal veins of the Creede district were pervasively altered by the addition of more than two billion metric tons of potassium some 1.5-2 million years before mineralization. Sodium, calcium and magnesium were strongly depleted, yielding a nearly binary quartz + potassium feldspar assemblage containing as much as 13 weight percent K 0. This large-scale metasomatism, originally noted by Steven and Rattle (1965), took place progressively by initial alteration of plagioclase phenocrysts to orthoclase or microcline followed by alteration of the groundmass feldspar to orthoclase and gradual change of the sanidine phenocrysts to more Or-rich compositions. Oxygen isotope and chemical studies show that the metasomatism resulted from the interaction of the tuffs with deeply circulating heated ground water and suggest that the potassium metasomatism of rhyolitic rocks is the facies equivalent of propylitization of volcanic rocks of more basic composition.

A satisfactory well-cementing composition must retain its fluidity long enough to be pumped into Place; then it must develop within a reasonable length of time sufficient strength and impermeability to anchor the casing in position and to form an effective seal between the casing and the formations. These properties may be evaluated by pumpability, strength (compressive or tensile), and permeability tests. Laboratory test procedures for the determination of pumpability time and strength development have been outlined previously and are readily available,1 but a satisfactory and convenient laboratory procedure for the measurement of the permeability of set cement has not been developed heretofore. some permeability data have been obtained previously by passing air through dried cement specimens.2 such a procedure is unsatisfactory because the drying of set cement alters it physical and chemical properties and subjects it to conditions dissimilar to well conditions. The problem of determining the number of particles of a phase distributed randomly in unit volume c an opaque matrix from measurements made on random plane sections is closely investigated. A formalized derivation for the general case is presented. Applications of this formal result are made to specific types of aggregates dispersed in a matrix; circles, particles with flat circular ends, cylinders, and constant shape aggregates of ellipsoids of revolution. Quantitative measurements of the average geometric properties of these aggregates are developed. In 1953 R L. ullman' developed a technique for determining, from measurements made on random plane sections, the number per unit volume, Nv, of particles imbedded in an opaque matrix. Using meas urements previously developed for volume fraction, vV,' and surface area per unit volume, .SV,= he was able to determine average volume, average surface area, and average dimensions of particles, independent of size distribution, for spheres and circular disks,' as well as for uniformly sized cylinders of any axial ratio.4 The technique is mathematically rigorous for the cases studied. Recent studies of this problem have yielded rigorous solutions for the general case of cylinders, permitting evaluation of NV independent of size distribution and with all axial ratios intermixed. Generalization to shapes having flat, circular ends has been deduced. A solution has also been obtained for the ellipsoid of revolution, independent of size distribution, but requiring a constant axial ratio in the generating ellipses. In the following derivations, as in Fullman's work, it is assumed that the problem is purely a combination of geometry and probability theory,that is,eithe the particles to be measured are imbedded randomly in the matrix, or a sufficient number of random plane sections are taken to make the sample representative. A relationship exists between the number of par- ticles of a given size and shape that may be situated in unit volume (Ny) and the number of intersections a random plane can be expected to make with these particles (Na). It is the purpose of the following section to derive this relationship. The probability of Intersecting Convex Bodies. Consider a convex, closed surface, that is, one for which no two surface normals point in the same direction, situated at some arbitrary position and orientation in a cube of material that is one unit long at each edge. It is not necessary to assume that this surface is symmetrical. Let planes be constructed in the cube parallel to the top face and at random distances from it. Those planes which lie between the two planes which are just tangent to the top and bottom of the surface will intersect it. The probability that a plane will intersect the body may be defined as the limit of the fraction of planes that lie between the two tangent planes as the total number of planes constructed becomes infinite. This fraction, in the limit, is equal to the distance between the two tangent planes, DV, divided by the total length over which planes are constructed, which has been taken as unity. If the body is now rotated to a new orientation, applying the same argument, the probability of intersection is again numerically equal to the distance between tangent planes. Let DV ($, 0) be defined as the distance between tangent planes of a convex body as a function of orientation, Fig. 1. The probability, Pr, of intersecting the body with a randomly oriented and randomly positioned plane, is then equal to the average value of DV (0, $) over all possible orientations. I NOW call your attention to two directions in which very important progress may be confidently hoped for—pyrometry and the heat-treatment of steel. We already find in the market more than one pyrometer which, in spite of serious defects, may lie used advantageously for determining and controlling the temperature of many of our metallurgical processes. It is to be hoped, and with much confidence, that by the rapid extension of the use of such instruments, the economy and efficiency of these processes may undergo an increase which, in the aggregate, will be of the greatest importance. In this connection, the lucid paper of Prof. Roberts-Austen," and the learned bulletin of Mr. Barus, are most welcome. But much remains to be done in the way of devising pyrometers suitable for manufacturing purposes. M. O. Holowaty (Inland Steel Co., Chicago)—Messrs. Stephenson and Carney should be commended on the presentation of this very interesting paper. They have introduced new ideas on sampling of sinter and have thereby made a valuable contribution to the qualitative evaluation of sinter. The paper undoubtedly presents a novel approach to the problem of sinter sampling and this is to be regarded as its main value. Sampling of sinter from the pallets prior to the discharge is by no means new. This sampling procedure was used in the past by Philbrook; Hamilton and Ameen and others. The sampling basket used by the authors of this paper, however, permits one actually to obtain a good sample of the sintering mixture. The basket which can also be described as a removable pallet goes then through the entire process of sintering and thus offers a sample which is positively representative of the batch in question. The authors' method of evaluating physical properties of sinter seems to be not altogether clear, however. It is felt that the following points should be clarified: I—In the section describing the shatter test the authors state that a 5-lb sample was used in the actual tests. There is no mention of the initial size of sinter particles used and the method of obtaining this 5-lb sample from the sinter cake weighing about 100 to 120 lb. It is also surprising that the sample was dropped from a height of 3 ft instead of the conventionally used 6 ft. Unfortunately there is no mention of the number of drops to which the sample was subjected. 2—The tumbler test used by Messrs. Stephenson and Carney in testing the samples of iron ore sinter was performed in a standard ASTM coke tumbling drum. The drum measures 3 ft in diam and is equipped with two 3-in. lifter bars. The distance of fall in this testing drum is identical with the distance used in the previously described shatter test. The number of drops in the tumbling drum is approximately double the number of revolutions. The basic difference then between the drop-shatter test used by Stephenson and Carney and the tumbling test seems to be the number of drops to which the sample is subjected and the abrasive action to which the sinter particles are exposed in the rotating drum. In any case, the choice between the shatter test and the tumbler test seems to be only a matter of taste and convenience. 3—The authors of the paper state that "in order to insure getting results that were representative . . . the entire sample obtained by means of the sampling basket was used as the starting material for the tumbler test. If the sample broke in pieces, all the pieces were used regardless of their size." The initial size of the material is known to be a very important factor, influencing seriously the final size of the particles. This should be particularly important in case of hard sinters. It seems also very troublesome and inconvenient to charge 12-in. cubes of sinter weighing about 100 lb into the testing drum. This could be eliminated by taking a standard fraction of somewhat smaller particles.

Seismic velocity determinations over Precambrian outcrops near Flin Flon, Manitoba, indicate that several different rock types have sufficient velocity contrast to make reflection mapping possible. Stratigraphic and fault contacts between metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks have been mapped at some depth. A mu1ti-fold reflection survey attempted to trace the depth extension of an ore-bearing (Pb-Zn) rhyolite horizon within the metavolcanic rocks. A synthetic seismogram has been produced from a 10,000-ft sonic log and provides means of comparing seismic records with the local geology. From this the optimum frequency spectrum and the maximum resolution of the seismic signals were estimated.

THERMAL expansion of rhenium data have been reported by Agte et al.,&apos; and Medoff and cadoff,&apos; respectively, while the linear expansion coefficient was determined by Sims et Al.3 Denoting expansion coefficients parallel and at right angle to c axis by all and Al respectively, their weighted mean should be equal to dilatometric linear coefficient of a random polycrystalline specimen. The values reported for these coefficients are tabulated below: Since these values are in poor agreement, and because of anomalous expansion behavior observed in titanium 4 and chromium, a rede termination of the axial expansion was carried out. A Unicam 19-cm-diam high-temperature camera was used, with unfiltered CuK radiation. Camera calibration was carried out using at Pt wire standarde at temperatures up to 1100oC, the variation between indicated and true temperature being within the experimental error (estimated at <3oC) above 750o C. Rhenium Johnson Matthey spectrographic standard) was vacuum annealed at 1000 oC prior to X-ray diffraction experiments. Lattice parameters were obtained by least-squares solution using the reflec- tions (1232), (1015), (2024), and (3030) for all the patterns, and the additional reflection (2133) for higher temperature (400°C and above) patterns. The relative expansion data obtained are shown in Fig. 1, lengths of the vertical bars indicating the spread in the parameter values obtained by using various combinations of three spacings from the four or five measured. The data calculated from the equation of Ref. 2 are included for comparison purposes. Several specimens were used to obtain the above data, neither of them showing a significant parameter change after completion of the high temperature runs. Some parameter data and the corresponding expansion coefficients between 25 oC and the measurement temperature are tabulated below. The comparison of the present data with those previously reported shows reasonable agreement with the results of Medoff and cadoff2 within the temperature range covered by them (up to 1000 oC). The a values are appreciably higher throughout most of the investigated temperature range. The basal expansion is—in agreement with their findings—appreciably higher than that in the direction of hexagonal axis. The expansion coefficient, al, however, decreases rather more slowly with temperature than previously reported. The expansion along the c axis up to nearly 1000°C appears in excellent agreement. However, at higher temperatures there is a marked deviation towards higher expansion, reproducible between different specimens. Furthermore, there seems to be some irregularity in the variation of all with temperature, the apparent local minimum and maximum values at 510o and 1024o C, Table II, being well outside the experimental error limits. It must be stressed that the apparent discontinuity in the c parameter expansion is still insufficient to account for the expansion value reported by Agte et al.&apos; since a total expansion of close to 2 pct would

The paper relates to the laboratory and pilot plant studies that have been carried out by Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd., Metallurgical Research Div., in developing the ammonia pressure leach process for extracting copper, nickel, cobalt, and sulphur from high grade nickel concentrate produced from Lynn Lake ores, and describes in some detail the chemistry of the process. IT is well known&apos;.&apos; 2 that copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc, ferrous iron, and a number of other metals combine with ammonia in aqueous solution to form complex ions of the form [Me(NH,)x]"+. The stability and solubility of these ions depend on the concentration of the metal ion in solution, on the amount of NH, present, and on the amount and type of anions present, e.g., OH-, C0;-, NO,, C1-, SO;-. If ammonia is partially or completely removed from such solutions, for example by boiling, the soluble ammines tend to decompose and the metals precipitate as basic salts. These properties of metal ammines have found practical application in the commercial recovery of copper, nickel, and cobalt from a variety of ores. In an operation formerly conducted at Kennecott"" the mill tailing containing 0.80 pct Cu as copper carbonate was leached by percolation with an ammonia-ammonium carbonate solution to dissolve the copper as the ammine. At Calumet and Hecla0-" With a mill tailing containing about 0.4 pct Cu as metallic copper, it has been found necessary to aerate the ammonia-ammonium carbonate leach solutions between stages to oxidize the solubilized copper. At Nicarol"-" where nickel and cobalt occur as oxides and silicates which are not soluble in ammonia, the ore is heated to decompose silicates and to selectively reduce the nickel and cobalt to metal, leaving the iron as Fe,O,, and is then leached with ammonia-ammonium carbonate solution accompanied by aeration to dissolve nickel and cobalt as ammines. In each of these leaching operations, the anion present is CO, and the metals can be precipitated from the leach solution as oxide (copper) or hydroxide and carbonate (nickel and cobalt) by boil- ing off NH, and C02 both of which are recycled to treat a subsequent ore charge. The products-—oxide, hydroxide, or carbonate—can be treated by conventional smelting, calcining, or electrolytic methods to convert them to refined metals. Thus the procedures mentioned utilize the properties of the ammines to extract copper, nickel, and cobalt from nonsulphide ores and separate them from the leach solutions. These processes have the advantage that they can be carried out in closed vessels at atmospheric pressure, that the leaching solutions are specific for the desired metals, that the metals can be recovered as relatively pure compounds by the boiling operation, and that the NH, and CO, can be recycled. Also, as the leach solutions after boiling and filtration are substantially free of metals, NH,, and CO,, they can be discarded, thus facilitating the control of the water balance in the leaching circuit. When, as is the case with Sherritt Gordon concentrates, sulphides are treated with ammonia solution in the presence of oxygen, the leach solution contains SO,--, and an entirely different set of conditions is encountered. The ammine sulphates (of nickel, for example) are more soluble than the carbonates and can be only partially decomposed by boiling. The SO, and NH, in the solutions can not be recovered by boiling. Thus, despite the more favorable leaching conditions resulting from high solubility of the ammine sulphates, the recovery of metals, NH,, and SO, from the solutions must be effected by other means. Sherritt Gordon Nickel Concentrate Treatment The Ni-Cu-Co flotation concentrate produced at Lynn Lake&apos;" contains 12 to 16 pct Ni, 1 to 2 pct Cu, 0.2 to 0.5 pct Co, 33 to 40 pct Fe, 28 to 34 pct S, 8 to 20 pct insoluble, and less than 0.02 oz per ton precious metals. The nickel is present chiefly as pentlandite, the copper as chalcopyrite, and the iron as pyrrhotite and pyrite. Most of the cobalt is thought to be present in pentlandite, although it is known that a small amount occurs as Co-Ni-pyrite.

A method is presented for determining minimum waiting-on-cement time, which takes into account the differences that exist between types and brands of cements and such individual well conditions as depth, temperature, and pressure. The basis for the method was determined by laboratory tests. Being a laboratory development, several steps were required to prove its merit. The first step consisted of laboratory tests designed to determine the minimum cement strength required in wells. Basis was found for setting a minimum value of 8 Ib. per sq. in. tensile strength. Next, it was shown by laboratory tests that the time to 8 Ib. per sq. in. tensile strength may be expressed as a function of consistometer stirring time to loo "poises," the approximate relation being "the time to 8 Ib. per sq. in. tensile strength equals the time to I00 &apos;poises&apos; times three." Next, it was shown that the time of maximum temperature development in cement slurries, due to heat of hydration, is also related to consistometer stirring time to loo poises, but only by a factor of approximately two. It was shown also that the shut-in casing pressure will build up after cement is placed and register a maximum pressure at approximately the same time the slurry down the hole attains maximum temperature. From this and the relationships listed above, the general rule was established that minimum waiting-on-cement time (time to 8 Ib. per sq. in.) after casing cement jobs in any well is equal to the time when the shut-in casing pressure reaches a maximum, as measured from the initial mixing of cement, times a factor of 1.5. Cement plugs drilled in the field at the time prescribed by this formula were found to drill "firm to hard," thus confirming the laboratory tests. These tests prove that many of the present regulations for waiting on cement require a longer time than is absolutely necessary. Use of the method herein proposed offers the possibility of a saving of $1200 per well. An even greater difference in practices will be found by making similar comparisons with respect to oil-string cement jobs. Differences in waiting-on-cement times of 36 to 48 hr. are common. At the outbreak of the war the firm decided to specialize in the manufacture of propeller wheels. It attacked the problem, therefore, from a foundry point of view, seeking to produce a casting that would be so accurate that no subsequent machining would be required on the blades, also from the point of view of the ship builder. There were two general methods of manufacture, the shortcomings of which have been freely acknowledged. In the sweep method, the nowel, or bottom half-mold, for each blade is swept up by a spindle beam and pitch race, while the top half-mold for each blade is built up individually. In the pattern method one individual blade, with the hub or hub portion, is mounted on a spindle and the individual blade mold formed, the pattern is then rotated on the spindle to the position for the next blade, etc. In rare cases wheels were made from a solid pattern. Owing to the cost of the pattern, its failure in many instances to be correctly made, and (when made of wood) its early and sure distortion the disadvantage of this pratctice is obvious, while metal patterns in most instances were prohibitive in cost. In these methods both green-sand and loam molding was practiced. The casting produced by either method can be considered only as a blank from which the propeller must be machined. The back surface of each blade must be chipped to the templet and through this procedure chipped to such accuracy as will be required for a static balance. Inasmuch as the work done by the machine tool is confined to the driving face of the blades, not only is perfection most difficult, but corrosion will be greater because of the removal of the dense skin of the casting and the local strains set up by the pneumatic tool in chipping. To produce a finished 9-ft. propeller for a Navy destroyer required from 8 to 21 days of foundry work and about the same length of time for the machining. Through the use of the Thacher process, only as many hours are required, besides it is possible to produce a finished casting in perfect conformity with any particular propeller-wheel design.

When a binary alloy is oxidized to form simultaneously an internal oxidation zone and an external scale which grows at a constant rate, the oxidation should reach a condition of steady shale, in which the internal oxidation zone is maintained at a time-independent thickness. Assuming an ideal model for the steady-state oxidation, the diffusion equation is solved for the steudy-state concentration profiles for oxygen and alloying- element in the metal. A theoretical prediction of&apos; the steady-state thickness of the internal oxidation zone is made in terms of the experimental parameters. FOR the oxidation of binary alloys, Rhines, Johnson, and Anderson,1 as well as Mask: have derived equations describing the kinetics for the simultaneous formation of an internal oxidation zone and an external scale which was assumed to mow according to a parabolic rate law. Experimental determinations of internal oxidation zone thicknesses beneath a Cu2O scale for Cu-Be and Cu-A1 alloys3,4 have shown some deviation from Maak&apos;s theoretical expressions, because the ideal model assumed for the calculation is not met experimentally. Some pure metals, such as columbium and tantalum oxidize at elevated temperatures and high oxygen pressures to form nonprotec-tive external scales which thicken at a constant rate. If such a base metal is alloyed with a solute element which may form a more stable oxide than the solvent oxide, then internal oxidation of solute may occur beneath the growing external scale. A review of the internal oxidation of alloys has been published recently.5 The purpose of this paper is to analyze theoretically for a binary alloy the kinetics for the simultaneous formation of an internal oxidation zone and an external scale which grows at a constant rate. Consider an alloy A-B in which A is the more-noble solvent and B is the less-noble solute. The solute oxide is assumed to precipitate in internal oxidation as stoichiometric particles of BO, which are assumed to have a negligible solubility product in the A matrix. It is further assumed that the diffusion of oxygen through the zone of internal oxidation is not impeded by previously precipitated BO, particles. The specimen is assumed to be sufficiently thick so that the solute content in the center of the specimen does not change. For consistency: the following notation of Maak2 has been used:

IN 1920, 531 million barrels of crude petroleum were consumed in the United States. As imposing as this figure is, the fact that the domestic consumption of crude petroleum has increased at an average rate of 10 per cent. a year for the past decade is more striking. Will this rate of increase in demand continue? If so, the year 1930 will call for 1260 million barrels of petroleum-a staggering volume. On the other hand, may we expect the demand for petroleum to grow as rapidly as it did when the automotive industry was having its most phenomenal expansion? If not, to what extent will the growth of oil requirements decrease? When and to what degree will the petroleum industry become affected by the economic law of diminishing returns? Obviously, this matter requires careful analysis, especially as both national and industrial planning must be predicated upon present estimates of the requirements of the future. The purpose of this paper, accordingly, is to project, as closely as present limitations of knowledge permit, the course of the demand for petroleum in the United States over the next ten years. At first, the problem of estimating the future of a demand as complex as that for petroleum might appear insoluble. Fortunately, however, there are several scientific methods of approaching the problem, centering around a study of rates of industrial growth, which lend considerable hope that the requirements of the immediate future in this field may be approximated with sufficient closeness to have practical value as a basis of action.
