The suggestion, which appears to find increasing favor, that the elementary composition of coals should be used as the basis of their classification, makes it important that our methods of expressing this elementary composition should be refined. It is doubtful whether many published ultimate analyses of coals are accurate within 1 per cent. carbon. Many are probably as much as 3 or 2 per cent. in error in carbon. It is, perhaps, not always realized that the extreme variation in carbon content over the range of bituminous coals is but 16 per cent. An error of 1 per cent. in carbon on analysis corresponds therefore with one-sixteenth of the whole range, an amount which is unjustifiable even for the application to commercial needs of a system of classification based on ultimate analysis. For the purposes of scientific research such limited accuracy is of little value. The object of this paper is to examine one important source of error in ultimate analysis, that due to the occurrence in coal of inorganic material, and to emphasize the need for the quantitative measurements (of carbon more particularly) on coals to be rendered independent of their contents of such material. Adventitious Mineral Matter When a determination of calorific value, for example, is made upon a coal, it is customary to correct the measured value with respect to the ash left by the coal on incineration, recording the result as being on an "ash-free basis." It is desirable, before discussing the adequacy of the correction thus made, to demonstrate its validity, which turns on whether the ash is present as an adventitious impurity in the coal and forms no part of the coal substance itself. The inorganic matter associated with coal has originated in several ways1: 1. The "inherent" inorganic materials, occurring as constituents of the plants from which the coal-forming deposits were derived.

The solid state bonding of aluminum to nickel was studied as a function of temperature, pressure, and time at pressure. The initial results indicated that as the reaction conditions were varied, marked changes in tensile strength occurred. Plots of the log penetration coefficient vs the reciprocal of absolute temperature for various isobars were straight lines displaced from each other. THE techniques of bonding different metals to A each other include brazing, welding, welding by application of a molten phase, and solid state welding without any molten phase present. This last technique, the pressing of metals either at room temperature or at some temperature below the melting point of the metals to be joined, seems to offer interesting possibilities for bonding purposes. However, this technique has not been completely investigated, and very little is known about the diffusion phenomena which occur during solid state welding. Some previous work on the effect of pressure on diffusion1 was inconclusive. This paper is concerned with an investigation regarding the effect that the processing variables, such as pressure, temperature, and time at pressure, have in solid state bonding. The tests were made with aluminum and nickel and special emphasis was given to the strength of the bond between these two metals and to the intermetallic penetration rate during the bonding process. It seems that the effect of pressure on the intermetallic penetration is of particular importance for practical purposes and this effect was therefore studied in detail. Procedure Apparatus: The means of solid state bonding used for this study was that of the hot-pressing technique. This method requires the equipment pictured in Fig. 1 and involved the following procedure. The two metals to be bonded were placed in an aquadag lubricated 18-4-1 tool steel die, 16 in. high by 1.440 in. ID, between punches of 1.366 in. diameter made of the same material. A thermocouple

THE magneto-optic method of analysis had its origin in experiments1 which were designed to detect and measure a time lag in the Faraday effect and later to study this time lag as a function of the wave length of the light.2 Faraday discovered in 1845 that a beam of plane polarized light, when passed through a transparent, isotropic medium traversed by a magnetic field of force parallel to the direction of the light, suffers a rotation. The direction of rotation is reversed with the reversal of the magnetic field and its magnitude depends upon the strength of the field, the length of the path of light in the substance and the nature of the substance. This phenomenon of magnetic rotation is known as the Faraday effect. A question which had been of some interest for years was whether this power of a liquid to rotate polarized light is acquired instantly with the application of the magnetic field, that is, whether it is a case of instantaneity or whether there is a very small interval of time which intervenes between the application of the magnetic field and the consequent rotation of the light by the liquid; in other words, whether there is a time lag in the Faraday effect. Efforts to measure such a lag previously had met with failure. It was recognized at the outset' that since a time lag had escaped detection it must be extremely small, if to a measurable extent it exists at all. It became necessary therefore to adopt a timing device capable of making measures of almost infinitesimally small intervals. The velocity of light served as this timing device, a modification of a method originally employed by Abraham and Lemoine3 being adapted to the requirements of the problem. Since light travels about 30 cm. in a billionth of a second and since settings in our observations may be repeated with deviations not exceeding 3 mm.,

TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF MINING AND METALLURGICAL ENGINEERS Gentlemen:-The following report covers briefly some of the more important activities of the Institute during the year 1923. In my report for the year 1922, I drew attention to the falling off in membership of the Institute due to the depressed condition of the mining industry in several lines and the inability of many of our members to find profitable employment in mining or its associated branches. A number who were unemployed during 1922 established connections during 1923, but a still greater number have been forced to resign or drop their membership during 1923. Fortunately, the number dropped is not so great as in the previous year. The Employment Service conducted by the four Founder Societies bears witness to the trend in business. For the young men just out of college, there are plenty of opportunities at small salaries, there are plenty of opportunities for them as laborers; but for the mature members, those of experience, there are few calls. During the last eighteen months, our Employment Service has been able to place only six of our members out of every hundred engineers for whom it has found work. Another loss which this Society has suffered, but which is not felt so keenly by our sister societies, is in its foreign members. The A. I. M. E. has always had a large foreign membership, but of recent years exchange has been so heavily against many European and South American countries that a large number of members residing abroad have been compelled to relinquish their membership. Almost invariably these members express keen regret because of the necessity that confronts them, and almost invariably the writers express hope that present conditions will not last long and that they will soon be able to ask-for reinstatement. Having stated the darkest side of the picture first, it may now be drawn to your attention that in spite of these losses the number of persons applying for membership was decidedly encouraging.

IT is a well-known fact that the solubility of zinc compounds decreases when these compounds are roasted in contact with iron compounds, but descriptions of tests to quantitatively express the fact have not appeared in the literature. Possibly such an expression cannot be uniformly and exactly duplicated by different operators because of the variation in the personal equation. In a general way, however, the reactions between zinc compounds and iron compounds under roasting conditions will show a certain trend with changing conditions and the approximate quantitative expression of this trend appears reasonably well established by experimental work conducted for this purpose. Ferrites and Marmatites The name "ferrite" has been given to the compound of zinc and iron which has the formula Zn0.Fe203. Among the questions pertinent to this subject are those involving inherent or natural ferrite, and also the synthetic or artificial variety. The inherent or natural product is formed when the mineral containing iron and zinc sulfides isomorphously crystallized is subjected to oxidation at roasting temperature. These isomorphously crystallized minerals are known, mineralogically, as marmatites, and contain ZnS and FeS in ratios of 2 to 1 up to 5 to 1 respectively. The zinc and iron sulfides form a definite mineral. They are firmly attached to each other and form common contact planes through which diffusion of the entities occurs during the roasting process. This diffusion of the molecularly intimate entities produces, during roasting, the compound referred to as ferrite, in proportion to the amount of iron originally present in the marmatite. For example, a marmatite from British Columbia containing 9.739 per cent. Fe and 56.87 per cent. Zn corresponds with the mineral having the formula 5ZnS.FeS. The ferrite produced in roasting, which has the formula ZnO.Fe203, contains 27.07 per cent. Zn and 46.40

What would be the, effect on the formation of sulfates of an increased water vapor content in the roasting gases? CHARLES H. FULTON.-I cannot answer that from our experience. The question of the formation of sulfate in the roasting of zinc is mainly one of temperature and the concentration of S02 and S03 in the gases. We found we could roast almost completely to sulfate if the concentration was kept at the proper point. We, however, did not care to do this because we wished to make a 5 to 6 per cent. S02 gas for sulfuric-acid work. The sulfating of the zinc oxide in the proper concentration of gases goes on very rapidly. In 1929, Coleman, Wilde, and Moore1 undertook an investigation of the theoretical decline in reservoir pressure as related to the production of oil and gas. The most important part of this work was presented in an equation defining the relationship between the reservoir pressure, the quantities of oil and gas produced, the oil and gas content of the reservoir, and the properties of the reservoir fluids. With this equation, it appeared that, with sufficient data, it would be possible to calculate the oil content of the reservoir and predict quantitatively the effect of gas-oil ratio on the decline of reservoir pressure. Needless to say, such an expression would be highly important in evaluating fields and in arriving at a choice of production methods to be used. Unfortunately, at the time these investigators published their work, there were not sufficient data available to permit application of the equation. The technique of measuring reservoir pressures had not been developed, gas measurements were uncommon, oil and water production records were in most cases inadequate, and little was known of the properties of the complex hydrocarbon mixtures making up the oil and gas in the reservoirs. For these reasons, little additional work of a similar nature could be done. However, during the past four years many data have been systematically accumulated on reservoir pressures and the properties of oil and gas, and it is now possible to use these data in furthering the studies on the behavior of oil and gas reservoirs. It is the purpose here: first, to present the derivation of a modified form of the equation given by Coleman, Wilde and Moore, which will permit the calculation of what later will be defined as the "active oil" content of a reservoir; second, to derive formulas for calculating the reservoir-energy changes that occur during the course of production, and finally, to discuss the limitations and application of the equations developed.

(communication to the Secretary*). -We must keep in mind, in balancing the savings-to be anticipated by the most efficient combustion of gas, the best heat absorption by stoves or boilers, and by heat conservation of the thermal equivalent carried in. blast-furnace gas-against the cost in operation, maintenance, depreciation and interest charges of the equipment required to realize the savings, that in boilers and hot-blast stoves we are basing our economies upon two different, combustion phenomena. In a boiler, evaporating water at a heat efficiency of 70 per cent., approximately 47,550 B.t.u. is consumed per boiler horsepower. Taking the blast, furnace gas cited in the above paper, we are using about 38 ¾ lb. of cold-washed gas per boiler horsepower. Using the hot-cleaned gas, the same equivalent heat is furnished by 34 1b. of the gas , This leaves of the 38 ¾ lb. required in the case of cold-washed gas, 4 ¾ lb. or 6,650 B.t.u. available for raising more steam when dry-hot gas is used, which means that an equivalent amount of coal firing can be dispensed with. Per ton of iron, this figure 2/3 X 12,000/38.75 X 4.75 = 980 lb. gas or 1,372,000 B.t.u. or 100 lb. coal. At $1.50 per ton of coal, the net saving per ton of pig iron produced by the use of dry-hot over wet-cold cleaning will, therefore, be about $0.06 2/3. At a stove heating 8,500 lb. of air per toil iron from 150° F., one-quarter of the dry-hot cleaned gas, or 3,000 lb., would heat the air to 1,450° F. 3,000 X 1,400 X 0.70 = (8,500 X 0.255) = 1,300. The cold-wet gas would heat the same amount of air to 1,280° F. 3,000 X 1,225 X 0.70 = (8,500 X.0.255) = 1,130.

The tidings of Mr. Hewitt's death, cabled to me at Rome, Italy, brought me a great shock as well as a sincere sorrow. I had left him, a few weeks before, not indeed in vigorous health, but still quite able to command recognition as a continued power in public affairs; and I thought him destined to enjoy for many years that final stage of a long, active and honored career, in which, having passed beyond the struggles and rivalries of business and of politics, his life and character could be justly appreciated by all men, like some noble work of art, already crowned, and marked henceforward "hors de concours." Moreover, he was, and would be to the end, not merely the passive recipient of admiration and esteem, but the source of iuspiring appeals, effective warnings and wise counsel. His rich and varied experience he had placed at the service of his fellows. His lightest word was weighty, and those who contradiEted him only injured their own cause thereby. Great trusts (true " trusts," in the old and proper sense of the term), like the Cooper Union, the Carnegie Institution, and others, still commanded his disinterested services. Great principles of liberty and of justice continued to be reinforced in perilous crises by his powerful advocacy; great measures were daily receiving from him a decisive impetus. No wonder it seemed to. us that this happy period of reward so well earned, and of beneacence so welcome to innumerable recipients of its blessing, must continue yet awhile. We did not expect the night instailtly to engulf the full-orbed sun. Nor, indeed, has this been our experience; in this instance, the sunset has left an afterglow more luminous than many a noonday. The conversion of a successful research and development effort into a money-making business venture requires careful attention. Problems of a business nature, such as market size, product selling price, raw materials and fuel availability and cost, financing factors, local and national taxes, licensing arrangements, etc. must, of course, be considered and resolved. In addition, the technical questions involving the scale-up of pilot plant or laboratory results to the full-scale plant must be resolved in order to avoid the financial disaster that attends a major delay in the startup of a commercial facility. The very difficult and demanding task of providing the interface between the research laboratory and the profitable metals processing plant will be discussed with examples from the author's extensive experience. After I had accepted the invitation to present a paper on the above subject of the interface between R & D and production operations, I began to give some serious thought to the subject. The program chairman had told me, in conveying the invitation, that what the committee had in mind was a discussion of positive and negative, forces in that interface, based on "gray-hair" experience. I am, therefore, at least physically qualified! My first reaction was one of mild shock; after over twenty years in the direct pursuit of the conversion of research and development findings into plant operations, I had never tried to sort out my , experience into a formal system of DO'S and DON'TS for the edification of posterity. However, after a little further reflection, I realized that this carries no stigma. No one has been able to formulate such a set of rules, and it is not really very likely to be done. Particularly if they are to be practical. I shall therefore settle for a more modest goal; I will simply discuss the factors that I have come to believe are the most critical in insuring that re- search and development results are converted into successful operation.

SECTIONS 1. INTRODUCTION.—In this investigation the meltingpoint and the specific heat of certain artificial silicates were determined by the method of mixtures, using a large platinum-ball pyrometer. The silicates were placed in platinum crucibles on the hearth of a small regenerative gas-furnace (Figs. 1 and 2), and the platinum ball was placed between them. The temperature of the furnace was usually raised very slowly, the behavior of the silicates being observed as they gradually grew hotter; and their temperature was ascertained indirectly from time to time by determining that of the platinum ball, which to that end was temporarily withdrawn from the furnace and immersed in a known weight of water in a calorimeter. The weight and specific heat of water and of platinum ball being known (the specific heat of the latter approximately), it mas possible to calculate the temperature of the platinum ball, which was assumed to have been substantially that of the silicates which surrounded it in the furnace. The specific heat of the silicates also was determined by the method of mixtures. Their temperature having been determined as just described, one of them was dropped into a known weight of water in a calorimeter, whose rise of temperature was then noted. Knowing the weight and initial temperature of the silicate, its specific heat was wily calculated. The reults obtained, especially as regards the melting-point, must be regarded as first approximations. The technical difficulties encountered were so serious as to raise doubts, now from one cause, .now from another, as to the accuracy of most of the results: hence I give but a few, those which were reached without mishap, and with proper observation of the various precautions. Six or seven years ago the United States Bureau of Mines started development of instruments for the purpose of accurately measuring the vibrational movement of the earth in the vicinity of quarry blasts. For this work a new type of seismometer has been developed. A number of these have been constructed, the accessory field equipment has been assembled, and approximately 200 field tests of actual quarry, blasts have been made. The results of some of these tests have been published 2/ and others are the subject of two manuscripts now in preparation. So far the attention of the investigation has been centered on ascertaining the characteristics and behavior of the ground vibrations. Occasionally, when opportunity arose, measurements of the vibrations occurring in houses or other structures caused by-quarry blasts were made, but without any attempt at direct correlation or interpretation. During 1936 the National Bureau of Standards conducted some experiments to determine the normal vibrations to which the wells and floors of buildings are subject. Cooperation of the Bureau of Mines was requested in measuring the displace-ment. This afforded an opportunity to study the affect of mechanically induced vibrations end make limited comparison with previous records of vibrations from blasting. This paper deals with the experiments made in cooperation with the Bureau of Standards and includes some comparisons with effects from quarry shots. The results are in the nature of a progress report only, and are not intended to draw definite conclusions. These tests were concerned with the determination of the maximum amplitudes of vibration possible in the floors and walls of a typical dwelling when subjected to commonly experienced vibrations. The dwelling tested was obtained by the National Bureau of Standards. It was a large four-story stucco building, 41 ft. south of the southerly curb of Park Road, in Washington, D.C., which was constructed about 1900 and was supported on overburden. The basement floor elevation was approximately that of the pavement of Park Road, Park Road runs east and west; the front door of the house faced north.

As the result of a series of analyses and volume determinations of gases discharged from the converters at the Garfield Smelting Co.'s smelter at Garfield, Utah, it was found that a considerable amount of lead fume was escaping from the stacks of the converter plant, and that if this lead could be recovered at a reasonable expense an attempt should be made to collect it. Two methods suggested themselves: (1) filtration through bags; (2) electrical precipitation of the condensed fume by a Cottrell plant. Filtration through Bags Tests were made in filtering converter gases through the ordinary woolen bags of lead-smelter bag houses to determine how long such material could withstand the corrosive action of the gases. While blowing on white metal only, the fabric was usually destroyed in 10 to 14 hr. In tests conducted in filtering gases when blowing on matte or slagging stage exclusively and when relatively considerable lead was being volatilizcd, bags in one instance lasted 60.5 hr. It therefore was evident that the Garfield converter gases did not contain in themselves sufficient neutralizing elements for the purpose of direct bag filtration, even during the slagging stage. Such results were more or less anticipated, but it was thus proved that under all conditions of blowing Garfield mattes a very considerable amount of neutralizing agent, zinc oxide or lime, or both combined, as in the Sprague process, would be required to render bag filtration possible. Again, owing to the constantly changing quantities of SO3 from a given battery of converters, depending on the number blowing at a given time and on the stages of the blow, it would be practically impossible to feed automatically the required amount of neutralizer. In order to safeguard the bags sufficient neutralizer would have to be continuously added to meet the maximum SO3 output, thus wasting neutralizers and giving an undesirably diluted final product. Such a condition is entirely different

He has had 40 years experience in tunnel and shaft-sinking work in both soft and hard rock, as well as subaqueous rock. He has used moles in various locations and has traveled around the world studying the problems. SOME BRIEF COMMENTS ON "MOLES" by Thomas Adair We of the Perini Corp. have been, over the past 15 years, in the forefront of the battle to develop the mechanized miner. We have contributed much to pioneer, develop, and promote the use of the mining machine. Our money and talent have not been spared in this effort. However, we are sorry to say that as of the present time (1968), at least from the economic stand- point, this effort has not been very rewarding. But, I must say to those who are presently involved in the work of building mining machines, do not be discouraged. There is money in it. We of Perini Corp. know because we put it in there. It has been estimated that during the next 15 years, some $20 billion will be spent on underground excavation; more than 13 thousand miles of sub- surface tunnels will be excavated throughout the nation. An aggressive, properly structured research and development effort would produce, within the next five or ten years, a better excavation technology and improved boring system capable of reducing present costs drastically, with a resultant great saving. The time for this effort is now, but where the enabling money for this effort will come from, I have no idea. Machine builders should be encouraged to design and develop a shield- type boring machine capable of continuous mining through varying types of ground or rock by incorporating the possibility of making minor modifications such as change of bit type, power package, etc. Such a machine could

During recent years, oil producers have observed with interest the practical success which has attended the application of water as a medium for displacement of oil from its reservoir sands in the Bradford field of northern Pennsylvania and southern New York. Here, according to various authorities, additional recoveries of frorn 2,000 to 12,000 bhl. of oil per acre have heen secured by this method, after ordinary flowing and pumping. rnethods of production had practically reached the lower limit of economic operation. Notwithstanding the success which has attended the practical use of the flooding process in the Bradford field, oil producers in other regions are skeptical of its value when applied under physical conditions differing markedly from those which characterizc the Bradford field. Its usc would probably he construed as illegal in most of the oil-producing states. This general relnctance on the part of oil producers in other regions to accept the flooding process is due in large part to lack of infor-n~ation regarding the factors that influence its operation and efficiency. With the purpose of clarifying to some extent the issues involved, and of determining when the flooding proccess may or may not beeffee-tivcly ernployed, the writers have conducted a serics of laboratory exper-imentments under carefully controlled conditions, designed to indicate, the influence of various physical, chemical arid lithologic factors. These experments have not been conducted under conditions identical with those which exist at depths far below the earth's surface, so that direct quantitative comparisons with field results are not justified, hut it is believed that the experimental results at least warrant qualitative inter-pretations that may he applied to field conditions. The methods employed in the conduct of these experiments are briefly explained, and the results, together with the conclusions based thereon, arc presented. The early methods of mining anthracite in the steep pitching Mammoth bed consisted in driving breasts up the pitch from the gangways and airways driven in the bed along the strike (Plate 2, Fig. 1). Breasts are simply rooms driven up the pitch the full thickness of the bed (Plate 2, Fig. 2), having a width of from 18 to 30 ft., and a manway or traveling way on one or both sides. (For detail of breast method see Whildin, Trans., vol. 50, p. 704). Many difficulties were encountered, and the maintenance cost of the timbered gangways was so great as to be practically prohibitive. To reduce this expense, the gangways were driven in the thin Skidmore bed underlying the Mammoth, and the coal mined through rock holes. (Plate 2, Fig. 2, A.) It was found that after the breasts were driven up 80 to 100 ft., the coal almost invariably rushed or "ran away," making good ventilation almost impossible and the extraction of coal from the upper portion of the lift very difficult. The economic length of a lift is from 200 to 250 ft., and the percentage of extraction by the old method above mentioned was often under 50 per cent., while the coal recovered was so badly broken up as to reduce materially the percentage of large sizes. Principles of Present Mining Methods The present methods designed for the recovery of a maximum percentage of coal and a maximum yield of the prepared sizes depends largely on the following principles: First.—Formerly the practice in mining bituminous coal was to space rooms so that as much coal as possible could be extracted in first mining (Plate 3). The small pillars were often lost, and an improvement in total extraction was found in the system of driving narrow rooms with wide pillars, with a much larger final recovery (Plate 4). 7.5-1. introduction. The possible engineering uses of nuclear explosives were recognized with the first nuclear detonation. Subsequent experiments have demonstrated the ability of nuclear explosives to move very large volumes of rock and earth efficiently and at costs below conventional earth-moving methods. The ability to package a quantity of energy equivalent to a few million tons of conventional explosive in a container approximately 20 ft long and 36 in. in diameter enables easy emplacement and thus provides the potential for excavation on scales heretofore impossible. Space does not permit detailed discussion of the many experiments with conventional high explosives and with nuclear explosives that were performed in developing the information presented here. A bibliography is included for those wishing detailed information. Material from those sources and from personal experience has been used freely. 7.5-2. Nuclear Explosives. An explosion, in general, results from the very rapid release of a large quantity of energy within a limited space. This is equally true for both conventional and nuclear explosions, although the energy is produced in quite different ways. In the case of a conventional explosive, this energy arises from chemical reactions. In a nuclear explosion, the energy is produced as a result of the formation of different atomic nuclei by the redistribution of the protons and neutrons within the interacting nuclei. Nuclear energy is of a much higher order of magnitude than chemical energy when equal masses are considered, and the release of this energy is a thousand times more rapid than the fastest chemical detonations. Explosions may be produced by fission or fusion reactions. FISSION. When a free (or unattached) neutron enters the nucleus of a fissionable atom, it can cause the nucleus to split into two smaller parts. This fission process is accompanied by the release of a large quantity of energy. The complete fission of 1 lb of uranium can produce as much energy as an explosion of 9,000 tons of TNT.

THE milling practice at Mascot, at present, consists of dry crushing to 5/8 in., jigging, fine grinding, and flotation. The ore arrives at the mill from two mines, No. 1 mine shaft being located in the mill proper, and No. 2 mine shaft being situated about 2000 ft. east of the mill. No. 2 mine is served by a coarse-crushing plant and aerial tramway to the mill bins. In jigging the No. 2 mine ore, 50 per cent. of the mill feed is rejected by the jigs as a jig tailing ranging from 5/8 in. to 10 mesh; the balance of this ore, after removing a jig concentrate, is ground to flotation feed. In jigging No. 1 mine ore, approximately 80 per. cent. of the mill feed is rejected as a coarse jig tailing, and the balance is ground to flotation feed without the removal of a jig concentrate. The difference in the treatment is due to the fact that No. 2 mine ore carries a higher content of zinc than that from No. 1 mine. Of the total concentrates produced, 30 per cent. are made on jigs and 70 per cent. by flotation. At present, 1350 tons of No. 2 ore and 800 tons of No. 1 ore are treated each 24 hours. The recoveries for a typical week are as follows: Heads 3.55 Jig concentrates 61.30 Jig tails 0.80 Flotation concentrates 60.60 Flotation tails 0.09 Extraction 86.50 The associated minerals are a straw-colored sphalerite, dolomite, calcite, pyrite, quartz, and a small amount of greenockite, which occurs as a stain and sometimes small crystals along with sphalerite, but is comparatively rare. Pyrite is present in small quantities, usually less than 0.5 per cent.; quartz occurs in bands a few inches thick. A complete analysis of the ore is as follows:

It is well known that different forms of carbon show differences in chemical behavior under apparently identical conditions. It is fairly well known that these differences persist, although to a lesser degree, in a single group of carbons, such as the anthracites of Pennsylvania. It is the purpose of this paper to show the extent of these variations for Pennsylvania anthracites from actual quantitative measurements of the amount of carbon dioxide reduced under the standardized test conditions employed. As the amount of carbon dioxide reduced to the monoxide (under comparative conditions termed, for convenience, the "reactivity") is important in combustion, gas production and metallurgy, it is hoped that this paper will be a useful contribution to the store of knowledge on these subjects. In carrying out the investigation, considerable time and thought were spent in obtaining what seemed to be the best possible design of apparatus. The next step consisted in making a number of trial runs on the same sample, varying temperature, particle diameter, etc. and then outlining a standardized procedure to be followed in testing all samples. Fifty anthracites were tested. As a matter of interest, some 10 miscellaneous samples were also tested. The data show initial reaction temperatures (abbreviated I.R.T.), reaction velocity constants at 900" and 950" C., some effects of added substances, and a few additional tests designed to throw some light on the causes of differences in reactivity. The sample of charcoal, as was anticipated, proved to be easily the most reactive of any sample tested. The anthracites as a group came second. The five samples of gas and by-product cokes, obtained from five different coke manufacturers, came third, and a single sample of Rhode Island anthracite ranked fourth, with respect to reactivity as above defined. Although the five coke samples do not necessarily represent the average market coke, and five samples constitute a rather small number of samples to serve as a basis for comparisons, the fact that none
