IN ref. 1, on the basis of tension and torsion experiments with single crystals of a brass, the values given in Table I were obtained for elastic coefficients. It was pointed out by Zener that the values for the 71.2 pct Cu were not satisfactory, since they resulted in a negative value for the bulk modulus, namely —4.17X1012 sq cm per dyne. In reevaluating the data of this investigation, it was determined that the reason for this negative bulk modulus lay in the extrapolation of the reciprocal Young's modulus to the zero value of the orientation function shown in Fig. 5 of ref. 1. This extrapolation was reevaluated by the method of least squares (50 pct probability) and a new value of the coefficient S,, was determined as 18.9220.42X 10M sq cm per dyne in lieu of the value originally reported of 18.82x10 sq cm per dyne. This new value of S, leads to a new value of S, of — 9.43 X101" sq cm per dyne. The values of the other coefficients are unchanged. results. This value compares with the value of 12.3X10 sq cm per dyne reported by Schmid and Boas? The new results are summarized in Table 11. These results follow similar qualitative trends, previously published,' relative to the effect of zinc content. However, the derived values of C11, C,, C,, and K are so sensitive to the uncertainty in the first decimal place of the S, values that they are probably not useful. This uncertainty must also apply to the previous results of Masima and Sachs," who obtained S, values from a similar extrapolation drawn wholly above their data points. The study of cobalt-platinum alloys has been of interest since they represent a class of permanent-magnet material in which the disorder-to-order transformation plays a controlling role. The magnetic properties of alloys in the range 40 to 60 at. pct have been found to be greatly influenced by composition and heat-treatment. The peak properties of 4700 coercive force and 9,000,000 gauss-oersteds energy product were obtained by controlled cooling and aging. These high values combined with ductility and machin-ability give the alloys useful characteristics although their high cost limits their application. THE cobalt-platinum alloys have been of interest in the study of permanent-magnet materials ever since the discovery by Jellinghaus that they had unusually high coerceive-force values.' The high coercive force was associated by Jellinghaus with the disorder-order reaction which occurred in these alloys. This was later verified by Gebhardt and Koster in a detailed study.2 An investigation of the structure, mechanism, and kinetics of the disorder-order transformation and resulting property changes in cobalt-platinum alloys has been in progress for some years. Certain phases of this study related to equilibrium rela- tions, and to the mechanism and kinetics of the ordering reaction have been published previously.3-5 In this paper, the results of the processing and heat-treatment studies on 40 to 60 at. pct CO alloys are presented. The magnetic properties have been found to be influenced greatly by the composition, by the cooling rate from the disordering treatment, and the final ordering time and temperature. Coercive force values, Hc, of 4700 oersteds and energy values, (BH)m, approaching 9,000,000 gauss-oersteds have been obtained by controlled cooling and ordering. The members of the Institute have probably seen in the daily papers notices of the plans of the Secretary of the Navy to. form an Advisory Board to assist the Government to make available the latest inventive genius of the country. Secretary Daniels has appointed Mr. Thomas A. Edison Chairman of this Advisory Board and has officially invited the Institute to secure the selection of two of its members to serve. on this Board. The Secretary in his letter states: "I feel that the work your Institute has done has been such as to give it the right to be in a way officially represented, and the Navy Department desires in this way to testify to its own appreciation of the splendid work for our country that your Institute has done. I have the emphatic approval of Mr. Edison, and he agrees entirely with me that your Institute should he represented in this way and that no better method of getting the kind of men we need could be devised." The invitation of the Secretary of the Navy has been officially accepted and steps have been taken to nominate the two members. Since the Constitution provides for no meeting of the Board of Directors until September, and as Secretary Daniels urged early action, the matter was discussed at a special meeting of the Executive Committee of the Institute, at which were present as many members of the Board of Directors as were in New York City at the time. Invitations were also extended to other members of the Institute who happened to be in the vicinity. At this meeting it was decided to submit the matter by a special letter-ballot to the Board of Directors and in doing so to suggest or nominate five members of the Institute, accompanying this nomination with the statement that the Directors might vote for two of the members so nominated or for any other members of the Institute not so nominated. It was voted at this meeting that it. was the sense of those present that in view of the fact that this committee was an advisory one the type of men to be chosen should be men of administrative or executive ability, cap-

As the specific gravity of low-carbon steel seems to be attracting considerable attention as a means of détermining the quality and value of the metal, I give here a few of the results of a long series of experiments recently made by me. The object of the experiments not requiring more than approximate correctness in the third place of decimals, the extreme precautions to obtain accuracy which are sometimes used in determining specific gravity were not observed. But each piece of metal was carefully cleaned to remove scale, rust, dirt, etc., thoroughly dried, and then weighed in air, all weighings being carefully repeated. The balance used was one of Troemner's finest, and sensitive to one-tenth of a milligram. Before weighing in distilled water, care was taken to remove, as far as possible, the air enclosed in the pores of the metal. The pieces of metal were suspended by means of fine silk thread, a correction of course being made for the weight of the silk. Care was taken that the water in which they were weighed should he always at the same level, and, as far as possible, at the same temperature.

COLCOCK JONES FRANK ROBBINS The February meeting of the Southern California Local Section-was held at the headquarters in the Chamber of Mines and Oil of. Los Angeles on Feb. 17, C. Colcock Jones presiding. Fourteen members were present. The subject announced was Ore Sampling. W. M. Watts opened the discussion by a general outline of the important points to be covered, in sampling a mine and the methods to be used in the various stages of the work. All the members present successively contributed details from their personal experience. The March meeting of the Section was held at its headquarters on Mar. 15. Twelve members were present, with Dr. Theodore B. Comstock in the Chair. The subject announced was Secondary Enrichment and all present took part in the discussion, Frank Robbins contributing a short paper on some observations in Central America. Variations of a very reliable geochemical field test for beryllium developed by Patten and Ward, have been adapted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to facilitate rapid testing of reconnaissance samples and to aid in rapid examination of known occurrences. Although several qualitative tests for detecting beryllium have been described in the literature,1,2,3, the Patten-Ward4 morin geochemical field method has the advantages of being rapid and being quantitative for minute amounts of beryllium. In addition to the morin field method, Patten, in cooperation with Griffitts, have developed a contact- print method for determining beryllium in hand specimens.5 The semiquantitative method can be used for rapid screening of samples in exploration or reconnaissance work. The use of beads for fusing samples provides a more rapid test, but gives less accurate results than the method developed by Patten and Ward. The semiquantitative method, however, requires less equipment and combines three stock solutions into one reagent for easy application. Estimates of samples in the range from 3 to 1000 ppm varied from about 0.25 to 5 times the actual beryllium content.

GAYLER, Teddington, England (written discussion).-At the National Physical Laboratory, the writers have made a number of researches on the relation between the constitution and mechanical properties of aluminum alloys of various types; the results obtained were in good general agreement with those of the authors. The writers, however, did not think that increasing the copper content of sand-cast low-copper duralumin to 4 per cent. necessarily caused a drop in the elongation to 1.5 per cent., as stated on page 9. In the case of sand-cast copper-aluminium alloys they had obtained much greater elongation, in some cases as great as 13 per cent. in heat-treated castings. For example, in a sand casting containing 3.5 per cent. of copper, a strength of 12 tons per square inch and an elongation of 13 per cent. were obtained; in a casting containing 4.5 per cent. copper, a tensile strength of 13 tons, and an elongation of 9 per cent. were obtained. These values were the maximum; the elongation varied considerably, being as low as 5 per cent. in some cases. In the writers' opinion, such variations are due more to unsoundness in the sand casting than to any other cause.

THE hardening of alloys by the precipitation of a second phase has long been an important technological process. One approach towards improving our understanding of this phenomenon has been a correlation of mechanical properties with such parameters as particle size and inter par ticle spacing.' Several reviews of such data have appeared.2-4 A major limitation to this approach has been that for most alloys the particles are submicroscopic in size in the range of optimum hardness. Precipitation-hardening copper-cobalt alloys, therefore, are of interest, because the ferromagnetic properties of the precipitate make it possible to measure particle size, number of particles, and so forth, from magnetic measurements alone.5, 6 Livingston and Becker7 have applied these techniques to a study of precipitation hardening in an alloy of 2 pct Co in copper. It was found from magnetic measurements that nearly all the cobalt to be precipitated was out of solution within a few minutes at 600°C, whereas the peak in tensile yield stress was not attained until a much longer aging time. Thus during the first 1000 min of aging time at 600°C the Yield stress was increasing while a constant volume of precipitate was coarsening, i.e., while particle size and interparticle spacing were increasing. Peak yield stress was reached at an average particle radius of about 70A. The earlier study was confined to one alloy at one aging temperature, so that the volume fraction of precipitate was fixed and, therefore, particle size and interparticle spacing could not be independently varied. The work has now been extended to several alloys of varying percentage cobalt in copper, and to aging at various temperatures. It was hoped that such a study might clarify the relative importance to precipitation hardening of particle size, interparticle spacing, and volume fraction of precipitate. EXPERIMENT The alloys studied contained 0.7, 1.3, 2.0, and 3.2 wt pct Co in copper. They were prepared from electrolytic copper and electrolytic cobalt in a vacuum -induction furnace, worked to 3/8-in.-diam rod, and machined into tensile specimens with a gage section 1 1/2 in. long and 3/16 in. in diam. All specimens were given a solution treatment consisting of a 30-min anneal in nitrogen at 1000° C followed by a quench into iced brine. Subsequent aging was done in nitrogen and followed by a water quench. Average grain diameter was approximately 0.01 in.

The slow, tedious and costly method of reducing copper matte to metallic copper in the reverberatory furnace, commonly known as the Welsh process, was displaced by the rapid and inexpensive converter process about fifty years ago. The art of refining copper was for many generations a carefully guarded secret among the Welsh furnacemen and was handed down among them from father to son. An attempt was made to apply it at Butte when the smelting of copper ore first started there but it proved too difficult and expensive under local conditions, and until the introduction of the converter process the entire output of copper was shipped to Swansea in the form of high-grade (60 per cent) matte. Before the construction of the Manhes converter, attempts had been made to reduce copper matte in the bessemer steel converter, but these failed, chiefly because the air was blown through the bottom of the vessel. The air holes became clogged with chilled copper as soon as the reduction started. Manhes partially overcame this difficulty by placing the tuyeres in the side of the vessel, some, distance above the bottom, thus allowing space beneath them for the copper to accumulate. Nevertheless the first attempts to operate such a converter at Butte were not successful, as no means had been provided for clearing away obstructions, which formed to some extent in front of the tuyeres. This difficulty was overcome by drilling holes in the outside wall of the air chamber directly opposite the holes in the shell and lining, so that these could be punched

David H. Browne was born June 8, 1864; at Hollymount, County Mayo, Ireland. At the age of 16, after going through the Londonderry Academy; he came to this country, and entered the University of Michigan, where he was graduated in 1885. He began his scientific practice as chemist, under F. A. Emmerton, in the laboratory of the Joliet Steel Co., after which he served some time as chemist at the Ludington mine, Iron Mountain, Mich. But in 1888 he went back for a year to his alma mater as instructor in inorganic analysis. Those who knew him feel sure that he would have been an efficient and popular professor; but his ardent temperament could not brook the rnonotony and confinement of the class- room; and in 1899 he went to work at the Andrews and Hitchcock blast-furnaces, at Hubbard, Ohio, where he remained until 1891, when he entered as chemist the service of the newly organized Canadian Copper Co., operating in the Sudbury district, Canada. This was the beginning of his special professional life-work. For twenty-six years he devoted himself to the numerous and complex problems successively arising in connection with the metallurgical treatment of the nickel-copper ores of Sudbury. One of his notable achievements was the development of an electro-lytic process for the separation of nickel and copper in the ores referred to. This method was successfully employed for several years; but when the Canadian Copper Co. was absorbed by the International Nickel Co., the cheaper Orford process owned by the latter was substituted. . A still more permanently important piece of metallurgical progress credited to Mr. Browne was the successful firing of reverberatory smelting-furnaces with powdered coal-a measure which had been desired, dreamed and attempted by others, but which he was acknowledged as first to put in practice on a large scale. Effective methods for determining grade and reserves of pegmatites in advance of mining have been developed in recent years. When intensive work began on the economic geology of pegmatites during the early years of World War II, it was widely believed that grade and reserves could be estimated only in a most general way. The literature indicated that not all pegmatite deposits are unpredictable, but statements emphasizing unpredictability and irregularity seem to have been more widely accepted. Many standard references reflect the prevailing opinion that minerals are unsystematic in their occurrence in pegmatites. Pegmatites have been de- scribed as "notorious for their irregular structure," and minerals within pegmatites as "irregularly distributed," "irregularly disseminated,'' of "erratic occurrence," "proverbially erratic in distribution," "characterized by extreme irregularity in size and distribution of the essential minerals, and variety and proportion of the accessory minerals, and "spotty."

Small scale open pit mining of the Lucky Mc property in the Gas Hills district of central Wyoming was started in the spring of 1954 and the first uranium ore went to Vitro's mill in Salt Lake City that July. Shortly after mining started it became apparent that accurate ore control for mining purposes would be an absolute requirement. A systematic drilling program was initiated in the spring of 1955, and has been continued up to the present time. Two main mining areas have been developed. Mine 1, at the site of the original ore discovery in the Gas Hills, covers a mineralized zone roughly 600 x 2800 ft. This orebody was outlined and developed by drill holes on 50-ft centers. Approximately 1300 holes were drilled in the area before preliminary mining plans were made and mineable reserves calculated. Reserve estimates were based almost entirely on chemical assays of drill hole samples.
