Pyrite is one of the principal Au-bearing minerals in refractory gold ores. Significantly high Au concentrations of up to 5200 ppm are present in pyrite. Pyrite hosting high levels of Au is also enriched in As. Pyrite as an unwanted mineral ends up in wastes and constitutes one of the primary sources of As in the mining and metallurgical wastes. Arsenic can be readily released to the environment due to rapid oxidative dissolution of the host pyrite under atmospheric conditions. In order to determine the form and occurrence of arsenic in pyrite, micro-X-ray absorption fine-structure spectroscopy (XAFS) spectra were collected from a range of arsenical pyrite grains having different morphologies and a range of arsenic and gold concentrations. All the pyrite grains are characterised by the dominant edge aligned with As-1 valence state. In pyrite, arsenic atoms substitute for S atoms that are in six-fold coordination about each Fe atom. XAFS data suggest that As atoms occur in clusters within the pyrite structure. In addition to As-1, fine-grained, inclusion-rich and framboidal-type pyrite grains have a second As species at ~11 875 eV corresponding to As5+. This As5+ species in pyrite is highly variable and attributed to the oxidation of arsenic exposed on the surfaces of pyrite.

Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASSM) offers lucrative employment opportunities to the locals of most developing countries. The major drawback of ASSM is its adverse impacts on the environment resulting from improper mining and processing techniques. Papua New Guinea (PNG) has very active ASSM activities. The artisanal and small-scale gold mining in PNG provide employment at local and national levels and the sector is an important source for inflow of foreign exchange into rural communities. However, small-scale mining activities are associated with sensitive health and environmental issues. The process of recovering gold by retorting and heating the amalgam over an open fire is a dangerous health practice. This paper discusses artisanal and small-scale gold mining operations in PNG and their impacts on the local environment.

The Tamagawa Hot Spring, from which Ra-Pb-Sr-bearing barite precipitates, is a representative hot spring in a volcanic gas-bearing hydrothermal system associated with Quaternary andesitic to dacitic magmatic activity beneath the Yakeyama Volcano. Thermal water in the Tamagawa Hot Spring is divided into three types: Cl-SO4-type (Ohbuki hot spring: pH 1.2); SO4-type (pH 1.8 to 2.9); and neutral-type (pH 6.1). The concentrations of dissolved components in the Ohbuki Cl-SO4-type thermal water are about ten times higher than in the SO4-type thermal water. The 87Sr/86Sr isotopic signatures of the Ohbuki Cl-SO4-type thermal waters (0.703992 ¦ 0.000004 to 0.704032 ¦ 0.000006) are different from those of SO4-type thermal waters (0.704245 ¦ 0.000003) formed by the interaction of andesitic volcanic rocks (0.704065 ¦ 0.000007 to 0.704093 ¦ 0.000009) and groundwater derived from river water (0.704314 ¦ 0.000012 to 0.704519 ¦ 0.000013) in a shallower part of the hot spring area. The possible origins of Sr in the Ohbuki Cl-SO4-type thermal water and in the SO4-type thermal water are different. The Sr isotopic ratios (0.704130 ¦ 0.000012 to 0.707556 ¦ 0.000014) of Aniai Formation andPreYakeyama Lake deposits occurring below the hot spring area are distinctly higher than those of the Cl-SO4-type thermal water. However, it is expected that a solidifying andesitic or dacitic magma which has similar Sr isotopic ratios of the Ohbuki Cl-SO4-type thermal water, occur in the deep portion of the Tamagawa Hot Spring. The Cl-SO4-type thermal waters having low Sr isotopic ratios do not acquire their Sr isotopic signatures by interaction with strata below the hot spring area, but they are likely to reflect water interaction with a solidifying magma with low Sr isotopic ratios. Components including rare metals in Cl-SO4 type thermal water could be transported from a deeper part. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. The Rio Capim kaolin district, located in the north-east of Parß State, Brazil, constitutes one of the worldÆs largest high-whiteness kaolin reserves for the paper coating industry. It contains, at the base of the main ore, a soft kaolin that gradually changes at the top into a ferruginous duricrust followed by a flint kaolin. The flint kaolin is completely discarded during the exploitation of the soft kaolin. With the view of a more complete beneficiation, aiming at a sustainable development of the minerals industry, the use of this residual flint kaolin has been considered for the manufacturing of zeolites. Zeolites were synthesised from the flint kaolin through a reaction between metakaolinite with soda at 80¦C, for durations of 24 to 144 hours. The transformation into metakaolinite was carried out at 800¦C and was not affected by the titanium oxides. For a synthesis time of only 24 hours, a zeolite 4A very close to its theoretical definition was obtained, whereas for synthesis times longer than 96 hours, a slight formation of hydro-sodalite was also observed. The synthesised zeolites were tested as cationic adsorbents on 0.5 molar solutions of Cu, Pb, Cd and Zn. The adsorption was measured for contact durations of one and three days. It was noted that the exchange kinetics were slow and that the retention was significantly greater after three days than after one day. The retention was greater than 50 per cent of the theoretical exchange capacity for Pb, Cd and Zn, which was different to Cu, where the retention exceeded its theoretical exchange capacity.

The performance of prototype magnetic resonance sensors suited to mineral measurement in conveyor, slurry or portable applications is described. The sensors can be positioned around conveyors and modified slurry pipes, providing deep penetration of the sensing field, relative insensitivity to ore surface conditions and high mineral discrimination. Measurements on slurry, concentrates and ores sourced from mine operations are presented for two applications. Firstly, the quantitative measurement of chalcopyrite in slurry was demonstrated in laboratory measurements. In a calibration test, a standard error of 0.1 wt per cent and detection limit of 0.3 wt per cent was obtained. Secondly, results were obtained for the discrimination of iron ore texture. Signals were readily observed using measurement integration times of seconds to several minutes, depending on ore material. The results demonstrate the feasibility of online quantitative analysis of selected minerals in processing applications using magnetic resonance.

One of the mining worldÆs greatest challenges is to effectively use consumables (ie reagents and grinding media) to maximise metallurgical response, while minimising operating costs. It is anticipated that this paper will provide a logical frame work within which this can be achieved. The current study, at PerilyaÆs Broken Hill concentrator in the lead primary grinding/roughing circuits, examines the dependency of collector adsorption on Eh. The data demonstrates clearly that under the right grinding chemistry the addition of a xanthate collector during grinding can improve galena flotation. Further, operating the ball mill under the desired grinding chemistry regime leads to significant reductions in collector consumption whilst maintaining the metallurgical benefit.

The non-stoichiometric sulfide mineral pyrrhotite (Fe(1-x)S), common to many nickel and platinum group element (PGE) ore deposits, occurs in varying crystallographic forms with the different types exhibiting subtly different physical and chemical properties. These differing properties are likely to influence the flotation performance of pyrrhotite, which in the case of PGE operations is actively recovered, whereas in nickel operations pyrrhotite is depressed. In this study, examination of natural pyrrhotite samples from Southern African and Canadian nickel and PGE ore deposits revealed a variety of pyrrhotite compositions in terms of iron content (Fe7S8, Fe9S10, Fe11S12) and solid solution nickel concentration. Pyrrhotite composition was correlated with its mineral association depending on whether non-magnetic pyrrhotite occurred in conjunction with troilite, non-magnetic pyrrhotite occurred as single phase pyrrhotite, magnetic pyrrhotite occurred as single phase pyrrhotite or whether the two phases; magnetic and non-magnetic pyrrhotite co-exist. Subsequent microflotation tests of selected single phase pyrrhotite samples revealed that the non-magnetic pyrrhotite is slightly more floatable than magnetic pyrrhotite. Microflotation tests also showed that varying flotation responses occur between differing magnetic pyrrhotite samples. These differences in flotation performance are postulated to be a result of the effects of varying pyrrhotite crystallography, trace metal content and mineral association on pyrrhotite oxidation, formation of surface species and subsequent adsorption with xanthate collector.

Geologists often classify ore textures on the basis of the origin of the rock in which they form and the grade of one or more minerals within the ore (Sinclair and Blackwell, 2002, pp 32-36).  Metallurgists, on the other hand, need to know how best to process the ore in order to extract the valuable minerals from it (Petruk, 2000). Geological classification has the following disadvantages:it requires the services of skilled economic geologists, of whom the supply has been dwindling for many years;it is subjective, depending on the perceptions of the individual geologists who make the classification; andit may relate only weakly to processing requirements of the ore. We describe methodology for automatic classification of ore textures from images of drill core. The images analysed are æclassifiedÆ images, in which a particular mineral (or mineral group) is assigned to each pixel. The new methodology is intended to:provide a quantitative and reproducible alternative to traditional geological texture classification,relate to process mineralogy of the ore, andimprove the ore-texture-related input to orebody domaining and geostatistical block models.

The purpose of the Lower Lea Valley Cable Tunnel project is to relocate the overhead power lines circuits, which currently cross the proposed site for the 2012 London Olympics in East London. This was the first contract to be awarded as an Olympic project and is on the critical path for the proposed Olympic Park as the construction of the Olympic village, stadium and other venues cannot begin until the tunnels are complete, the cables installed and the overhead power lines removed. The tunnelling works for the scheme include two parallel tunnels between Hackney and West Ham. Each tunnel is approximately 6 km in length. One tunnel is 4.15 m ID and connects the National Grid substations. The other is 2.82 m ID and connects the EDF Energy substations. The tunnels were constructed through mixed ground using four earth pressure balance tunnel boring machines. These were driven simultaneously from two drive shafts within a single site. The 12 km of main tunnels were constructed within a year from start to finish, with completion in June 2007. The shafts range between 6 m and 15 m ID. These were constructed using a combination of caisson sinking and underpinning techniques. Dewatering was adopted to suit the groundwater conditions.Other works include the design and construction of the head house buildings, cable and ventilation culverts, mechanical and electrical (M&E) installations and all associated works. In addition to the above, a further 1 km of tunnel and two shafts were added to the project scope connecting the EDF Energy tunnel to the substation at Bow. These additional works provided further challenges to the project to ensure that these works were constructed within the program constraints for the 2012 London Olympics. This involved refurbishing one of the tunnel boring machines from the main EDF Energy tunnel drives and relaunching the machine to construct the Bow tunnel. The Bow tunnel was constructed within two and a half months, with the tunnel boring machine breaking through in August, ahead of schedule. The main challenge presented by this project is the program constraints. This project outlines the requirement for team work between the client, stakeholders, contractor and designer in order to provide program certainty. A close working relationship between the contractor and the designer is required to provide value engineered, time-saving solutions to mitigate the risks associated with the design and construction program.

Truck fires in a tunnel can create heat release rates (HRR) significantly higher than 100 MW. Because of a fast spread of smoke and heat the self-rescuing period is shortened significantly. Furthermore, it was experienced that firefighters are not able to approach the fire because of enormous heat and radiation. As consequence, the fire may spread to adjacent vehicles, which is reported for distances of more than 50 m. Tunnels can be damaged severely by fires and the repair works causes long closing time of tunnels. In addition to direct costs for the refurbishment of the tunnel, further economic losses will occur due to the closure time. Conventional deluge systems in Japanese and Australian road tunnels have been known since the 1960s. During the last years the research work was concentrated in the development of more effective and cost-effective solutions based on water mist technology. Orientating fire tests as well as specifications of minimum requirements were carried out within the European research project UPTUN. This basic work was extended by the safety of life in tunnels (SOLIT) research project, funded by the German government. The scope of SOLIT was not only to study the effects of water mist fire suppression systems in tunnels, but also the interactions with other safety systems, such as fire detection, passive fire protection or ventilation. Furthermore, the integration of active fire suppression systems into a holistic tunnel safety system was part of the work program. Within this research project a large-scale fire test program with more than 50 fire tests, including 25 truck fires with a potential HRR of almost 200 MW, was carried out in the test tunnel of San Pedro des Anes (Spain). Furthermore, a two-week testing and training period with the Madrid Fire Brigade was carried out after the SOLIT program. Two fundamental results were achieved during the fire tests:Primarily, water mist systems are able to control the HRR of fires in tunnels, so the atmosphere will be improved significantly. Hazardous effects of toxic smoke on people will be reduced and due to the reduction of temperatures and radiation, a firefighterÆs approach is improved significantly. Furthermore, the fire spread will be hampered and the thermal load on the building structure also be reduced. Secondarily, due to positive interactions with the ventilation system, the effectiveness of a tunnel ventilation system, longitudinal as well as semi-transversal, is increased significantly. Based on the results of the SOLIT research project, a water mist system was applied into several parts of the M30 tunnels in Madrid. As a basic principle the technical equipment and the methodology of implementation comply with the UPTUN 251 guidance, recommending minimum standards for water-based fire suppression systems in tunnels.

The Chang Jiang Tunnel and Bridge Project, when completed, will provide a fixed link between ShanghaiÆs rapidly developing Pudong District and Chong Ming Island, situated in the Yangtze River delta. The link includes 7.5 km of bored tunnel from the Pudong to the intermediate Changxing Island from where the link comprises viaduct and a cable stayed bridge. The bored section comprises twin 13.7 m internal diameter segmentally lined three-lane highway tunnels. At its deepest point the tunnel will be 55 m below the river. Cross passages will link the two bores for passenger evacuation. Tunnel boring commenced in October 2006 and is scheduled for completion in mid-2009. The paper describes the key features of the design and construction of the bored tunnel by two 14.53 m diameter slurry TBMs and eight cross passages using ground freezing techniques in alluvial sediments. A decision to include light rail below the road deck was taken after the completion of the detailed design. This posed a number of design challenges including passenger evacuation to the road deck, and the redesign of the low point sumps. The various options considered are discussed together with those adopted for construction.

In the present work, the microstructure and mechanical properties of structural mortar from glass insulators were studied by X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, microhardness and compression testings. The investigated glass insulators were manufactured between the 1960 and 1990 years and had been used in 230 kV transmission lines. The results evidenced that the structural mortar of glass insulator was replaced from Portland to aluminous cement along the years. The crystalline phases of the mortar were identified and mechanical properties were correlated.

This paper focuses on the impact of high pulp temperature on sphalerite flotation after the zinc regrind circuit in the Zinc Plant of Somincor, owned and operated by Lundin Mining Corporation. In the zinc circuit, the zinc rougher concentrate is reground with forged steel media before flotation with one stage of roughing and scavenging, and three stages of cleaning to obtain a zinc final concentrate (zinc grade >50 per cent). After regrinding, sphalerite flotation has been found to be seriously affected by high pulp temperature which may occur during the summer months. Mineral recoveries were found to be seriously reduced at pulp temperatures above 60¦C. At this high pulp temperature, neither elevated copper sulfate concentration nor a decreased pH alone appreciably increased Zn recovery. However, a combination of these two (eg a decrease in pH from 11.5 to 10.8, and an increase in copper sulfate dosage from 400 g/t to 800 g/t) was found to reduce Zn depression at high pulp temperature. At pulp temperatures below 45¦C, the negative influence of pulp temperature on mineral recoveries was minimal. A systematic series of flotation tests and solution/surface analyses were performed to reveal causes for poor sphalerite flotation at high pulp temperature after regrinding. The decrease in mineral recovery was shown to be associated with variations in the surface species on mineral particles in response to the increased pulp temperature. These variations in the surface species include collector desorption and superficial oxidation to form lead/zinc oxide/hydroxides on mineral particles. The influence of the type of regrinding media on sphalerite flotation at high pulp temperature was also addressed in this work.

Historic mining across the Bendigo goldfield reached an average mining depth of 750 m over an area of about 16 km by 4 km, with two shafts exceeding 1400 m. Mining ceased in the mid 1900s due in part to increased dewatering and ventilation demands. Water extraction technology of the day, combined with multiple mine ownership, did not allow uninterrupted and thus economic mining activity to prosper. Today Bendigo Mining Limited (BML) is targeting gold-bearing reefs beneath the water-filled historic mine workings. To ensure mining activity can proceed without the risk of water inrush, historic workings are being dewatered by submersible pumps in historic shafts and through a series of underground drain holes intersecting old workings. Due to the high heads involved, individual drain hole development requires rigorous safety control implementation and assessment prior to drilling. Water extracted via drain holes is pumped to the surface through a series of pipe lines and rising mains in conjunction with two staged pumping stations. Both stations are equipped with high-speed centrifugal pumps, each capable of pumping 40 L/s at a static head of approximately 300 m. BML, which operates beneath and within a large city, is confronted with unusual environmental and social challenges compared to many within the mining industry. The raw mine water, which contains elevated salt levels, is piped through residential areas and must comply with strict controls to prevent impacts on the surrounding environment. The final delivery point is BMLÆs water treatment plant at the north end of the city. The water treatment plant utilises chemical pretreatment and reverse osmosis. It is able to process 7 ML of mine water per day at full production. The product is approximately 5 ML of reusable irrigation quality water, which is made available to the Bendigo community for public gardens, sporting facilities and rural irrigation. The 2 ML of brine is directed to a purpose-built evaporation pond facility located 7 km north of the water treatment facility.

More than ten seafloor massive sulfides (SMSs), which tend to be enriched in Au and Ag with varying amounts of Zn, Pb and Ba, have been reported in Japanese Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) including the Jade hydrothermal field in the Izena cauldron Okinawa, theSunrise deposit in Myojin knoll Izu-Ogasawara, and other active deposits found in the past 20 years. From the fiscal year 2008 some universities in Japan will begin development of sensing devices to delineate surface distributions of known SMSs and to find new ones. The devices would be deployed by an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) or remotely-operated underwater vehicle (ROV) later in active hydrothermal fields and potential areas in the EEZ. On the other hand, different laboratories are planning to research and evaluate SMSs with state-of-the-art methods such as the benthic multi-coring system and geophysical devices to collect information in deeper parts of the SMSs. In this session recent projects on exploration and evaluation of SMSs with some new trials including geophysical and geological surveys in Japan will be reported. Selective leach analytical techniques applied to surface geochemical samples in the search for deeply buried mineral resources gained popularity in the late 1990s. Several commercial assay laboratories introduced their own selective leach methods, adding to the few established commercial methods at that time. Many of these laboratories promoted their methods with orientation data showing favorable responses to both precious and base metal mineralisation, concealed beneath extensive thicknesses of overburden. However, many explorationists remain confused about the utility of these geochemical methods. This confusion is due primarily to the lack of objective orientation surveys over significant mineralisation, comparing all commercially available selective leach methods and to the lack of a creditable theory explaining the formation of these selective leach anomalies. An orientation survey was designed to fill the first void û an objective survey over significant mineralisation. With the help of 17 mining companies and assay laboratories, an orientation survey was conducted over five significant covered gold deposits in Nevada, USA , representing over ten million ounces of gold. Hopefully the results of this survey will help provide fuel for those working on the second void û a theory to adequately explain the formation of these selective leach anomalies.

Based on the mode of occurrence, gold is classified into three categories: microscopic gold, submicroscopic gold and surface-bound gold. Microscopic gold, or visible gold, refers to gold minerals in which Au occurs in a substantial amount, such as native gold and electrum. Submicroscopic gold, ie invisible gold, refers to gold contained in the structure of other minerals (mainly sulfides) in minor to trace amounts. Surface gold is the gold that was adsorbed onto the surface of other minerals during mineralisation and subsequent oxidation or metallurgical processing. Gold mineralogy has a significant impact on its extractive metallurgy. Gold process mineralogy helps address problems related to gold ore processing. It is widely used as a predictive and troubleshooting tool in gold ore processing, and provides useful information on process selection, flow sheet development, recovery improvement and reagent consumption optimisation. This paper will begin with the classification of gold ores, and will focus on gold mineralogy and how it impacts extractive metallurgy through case studies.

This study relates to the spongillite deposits from the region of Jopo Pinheiro, in the north-west of the State of Minas Gerais, south-eastern Brazil. The deposits occur in shallow ponds (with a maximum depth of 3.5 m) on a karstic planation surface developed on rocks of the Spo Francisco Neoproterozoic Supergroup. Cenozoic detritic covers are associated with this surface. The field study of spongillite deposits from the Preguita and Avipo deposits revealed sedimentological and pedological similarities between the different deposits. They have a lenticular shape and contain different layers of sedimentary spicules intercalated with layers of quartz sand and clay minerals. Representative samples from the different layers investigated by X-ray diffraction, differential and gravimetric thermal analysis and infrared spectroscopy showed a range from three to 80 per cent of amorphous silica (opal) corresponding mostly to the sponge spicules in the sediments. Optical microscopic investigation determined that the spicules predominantly belong to the sponge Metania spinata. This species is represented by smooth megascleres (alpha type), prickly megascleres (beta type) measuring 240 to 450 mm in length, as well as the spiny microscleres; whereby the smooth megascleres are larger and thinner. The morphological variation of the spicules as well as the presence of more fragmented spicules towards the base of the deposits, portray a variation in texture and in the state of their preservation along the profile, suggesting environmental variations at the time of their formation and deposition.

Oyu Tolgoi is a large Cu-Au porphyry deposit in the south Gobi desert, Mongolia. The first of several deep, large-diameter, concrete-lined shafts, Shaft 1, is nearing completion. It will have a finished depth of 1380 m at a diameter of 6.7 m. These shafts will provide access to and hoisting capacity for block caving of deep underground ore. Geotechnical site investigations, and associated predictions of stability and ground support requirements, are compared against actual construction performance. Routine mapping is essential, along with checks against predictions and informing the contractor of ground conditions and variances.Advance rates are compared against predicted rock mass quality. A reasonable correlation exists between Qwall and advance rate. Overbreak and concrete liner thickness is related to the blockiness quotient, RQD/Jn.A ætool-bagÆ of just a few support elements (chain-link mesh, fibrecrete and 2.4 m long friction anchors and resin grouted re-bar bolts) was able to cope with the ground conditions encountered. QA/QC procedures are essential from the factory, through site storage to installation.

Ferromanganese nodules form a specific category of widespread marine mineral deposits. The tremendous increase in metal prices during the last decade raised new economic interest in their exploration. The German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR), which had been engaged in nodule research in the 1970s and 1980s, renewed its activities on this subject based on an exploration contract with the International Seabed Authority, signed in 2006. BGRÆs licence area û comprising 75 000 km2 û is located between the Clarion and the Clipperton Fracture Zones. In this so-called nodule belt north of the equator the sea floor reaches water depths of >4000 m. About 900 million tonnes of manganese nodules are expected there. In this study the fine-scale distribution of important elements in manganese nodules and crusts from a variety of locations was investigated. Besides 11 samples from the RV SONNE cruise SO-25, numerous samples from additional locations were included in this study for comparison. In general, the sample suite includes two genetic types of precipitates, manganese nodules and Co-rich crusts. A detailed characterisation of the distribution of major, minor and important trace elements in manganese nodules based on in situ microenergy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (¦-EDXRF) analysis is presented here. The data are compared with bulk major, minor and trace element data as well as with quantitative electron probe microanalysis (EMPA) data sets. The element distribution maps and profiles produced by ¦-EDXRF analysis with short or extended (in case of profiles) counting times, allow precise selection of æregions of interestÆ for further detailed investigation using high spatial resolution techniques (eg scanning electron microscope (SEM)-EDAX; laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (LA-ICPMS); isotopic studies).
