A number of gold processing plants in Western Australia have nickel in their ores, leading to significant levels of nickel on their loaded carbon. The presence of nickel during leaching, adsorption and elution'may have detrimental effects on cyanide consumption, carbon inventory requirements, stripping costs, electrowinning efficiencies and may contaminate the gold bullion.This paper discusses the competitive adsorption of gold and nickel cyanides onto activated carbon and investigates changes in solution parameters that may improve gold adsorption and/or inhibit nickel adsorotion.

There are a number of methods available for the determination of the fracture toughness of rock. Some of the most recognised methods include the hollow pressured cylinder, the short-rod, the chevron - edge-notched round bar in bending and the disc-shaped compact specimen. Most of these tests are difficult and expensive to conduct. In this paper the simple Brazilian testing of discs for tensile strength has been used to determine their fracture toughness. Tests were conducted on six different rock types and the values of the fracture toughness obtained for each type are in close agreement with the results of the well recognised the chevron edged types. During trials which began in May 2005, traditional steel dump bodies for transporting iron ore on 220-tonne haul trucks at a Labrador iron ore mine were compared to a novel rubber suspended dump body. Loads were measured and compared over some 93 700 loads, representing more than 20 Mt transported. Maintenance costs and downtime were also measured over the course of the trial, which lasted nearly one year. This paper outlines the parameters and results of the trials. Parameters measured included payload and production improvements, carry-back reduction, downtime due to body maintenance, and wear on the floor of the suspended dump body. These parameters were then compared to those for conventional steel dump bodies in use at the mine, and conclusions were drawn. The resulting comparisons were significantly positive in favour of the new suspended dump bodies, confirming that each truck could haul an additional 41 000 tonnes per year, that downtime hours could be considerably reduced, and that body availability and service life can be extended through use of the suspended dump body. There was also a high level of operator acceptance of the suspended dump bodies due to less loading shock and a smoother ride.

The ground handling system needed for the second lift of the underground block caving operation at Northparkes Mines had to link into the existing infrastructure. Production requirements indicated that an annual output of 5 Mtpa was necessary from a depth of approximately 850 m. The shaft that serviced the first lift stopped at a depth of 520 m. This paper covers the selection of the design for the system and the factors that were taken into consideration in making the decision. It will describe the installation program and methodology and highlight areas of significance and then detail some of the issues concerning commissioning of the ground handling system.

This paper discusses different possibilities to enhance coarse particle flotation using forth manipulation and improved flotation cell design. Experiments were carried out in laboratory, pilot and industrial scale ranging from 0.0015 to 100 m3/axle. During the work it could be shown that the conventional idea of one single flotation cell type for both fine, immediate and coarse flotation of coarse and fine particles need different impeller tip speeds and a different froth control objective for effective operation. For optimal operation for coarse feeds the tip speed must be reduced and the froth vertical velocity must be increased to compensate the respective drainage velocity and also the water film thickness must be taken care of. Turbulent eddies below the froth interface should be suppressed. The paper discusses the effects of different froth manipulation variables like froth vertical velocity and froth residence time to the recovery and selectivity. A function has been developed, between the residence time of the froth and the flotation cell's ability to produce an improved concentrate grade as a function of different operating and froth manipulation variables.

Over a four year period from 1984 to 1987, a broad range of ground conditions were experienced in recovering old workings at the Walhalla mine in central-eastern Victoria. Solvent extraction of cobalt from an ammoniacal ammonium sulphate medium was carried out using Di(2-Ethyl Hexyl) phosphoric acid in kerosene as diluent. The effect of ammonium chloride and ammonium sulphate on the extraction efficiency was studied. Problems with the cyanidation of copper-gold ores Copper-rich gold ores are becoming increasingly important both within Australia and overseas (Dayton, 1982; Deng and Muir, 1994; Muir et al, 1993; Sceresini and Staunton, 1991; Solis, Hefter and May, 1995; Wall, Hornby and Sethi, 1987). The wirebar furnacing and casting facility commissioned in 1970 at Copper Refineries Pty. Ltd. (CRL), Townsville, comprising a 70 tonne/ hour ASARCO shaft furnace and a Walker type casting wheel, contained several unique design features. Since commissioning, effort has been directed at improving metallurgical control of the casting process. This has resulted in the identification of optimum mould lubricant properties and the use of continuous on-line measurement of molten metal oxygen content. Casting defects such as cracks and surface porosity are readily explained and controlled using these techniques.

The world-class iron ore mines at Mt Whaleback, Torn Price and Paraburdoo located in the Hamersley Province of Western Australia must mine the Mt McRae Shale to obtain high grade ore from the Dales Gorge Member of the Brockman Iron Formation. The Mt McRae Shale contains a black pyritic shale lithology that reacts with ammonium nitrate-based explosives. This paper provides an overview of the problems associated with mining this reactive rock type as well as the development of a comprehensive procedure to safely and efficiently blast, excavate and dispose of this material. The strategy used to develop the procedure involved raising the awareness of relevant site personnel to the risks associated in mining the Black Pyritic Mt McRae Shale, obtaining the commitment of these personnel that a detailed procedure was required and that any procedure developed must be followed, otherwise the potential risks such as premature detonation were high. It was also necessary that an on-going training program be implemented so that all relevant new employees would be educated as to the reasons for adhering to the Black Pyritic Shale Procedure.
