This paper discusses the social and economic impact of mining, and in particular goldmining, on New Zealand. The range of topics covered and their complexity has confined us in this paper to highlighting the main points of concern û a detailed report is under preparation. A major problem in undertaking this study was the lack of hard data on important environmental, economic and social issues and if there is to be effective planning in the area of natural resource use this situation must be rectified. The following conclusions were drawn: Goldmining was very important in shaping New Zealand's early social and economic development, providing wealth, employment and impetus for social change.Foreign investment and technology has been an essential element in New ZealandÆs economic development.Mining is a small industry at present by this must not be allowed to obscure its potential to broaden New Zealand's economic base and provide foreign exchange.With modern methods, development of mineral resources and environmental protection are not incompatible but certain unique and irreplaceable areas must be preserved.There are problems in evaluating mining and other projects because different groups hold different values, and arguments often hinge on the valuation of costs and benefits rather than the technical aspects of the analysis.Mineral exploration is a high risk business and the potential returns must be sufficient to attract capital if New Zealand's mineral resources are to be developed.A resurgence of goldmining will clearly have obvious benefits for Waihi but the local community must plan carefully for their future. New Zealand will also gain valuable foreign exchange required for higher levels of economic activity.

Based on relative CO2, N2, and 3He contents, geothermal systems of the Taupo Volcanic Zone, TVZ, can be subdivided into two major groups: arc-type systems, associated with andesitic magmatism along the eastern boundary of the TVZ, and rift-type systems over its western parts. The highly increased N2/3He, CO2/3He and CO2/Cl ratios of the former are ascribed to entrainment of large proportions of volatiles of subducted, marine sedimentary origin. The largely rhyolitic, rift-type magmas are assumed to have formed from volatile-depleted, residual melts. Correlations of Cl and CO2 with heat contents suggest that formation of the two types of source magmas involves mixing of two end member components: a low-volatile melt with a heat/Cl ratio of 25 Ml/mol (0.7 MJ/g), and a low Cl vapor with a heat/CO2 ratio of 5 Ml/mol. On the basis of these values, the heat associated with andesitic magmas is found to be carried in close to equal parts by both vapor and melt; for the rhyolitic melts the proportion contributed from the vapor is only about 2%. The heat/He ratios of the rhyolitic source magmas for the rift-type geothermal discharges from the TVZ of 0.12¦0.05 Ml/pmol is within the range of 0.05 to 0.2 Ml/pmol of the upper mantle. The higher heat/3He ratios for the arc-related magmas of 0.4¦0.2 Ml/pmol are likely to be due to the high proportions of heat carried in the form of a separate, low 3He vapor phase derived largely from subducted sediments.

The epizonal Ag-Pb-Zn vein deposit at San Bartolome is characterised by a base-metal sulphide assemblage containing the spectacular development of interpenetrating, bladed networks of pyrrhotite which have been replaced by marcasite and pyrite. A similar assemblage displaying the same crystal habits and textures are also a diagnostic feature of the Sn and SnAg deposits ofBolivia. On this basis, it is reasonable to conclude that both deposits were formed from fluids of similar nature and origin. Although no economic accumulation of Sn is known in San Bartolome, further comparison of the geologic setting, age, mineralogy, fluid inclusion data and magmatic association of this deposit with the Bolivian systems has highlighted additional similarities consistent with a hypothesis that more extensive Sn mineralisation might exist in the San Bartolome area.

The source and transport regions of fluidised (transported) breccias outcrop in the Cloncurry Fe-oxide-Cu-Au district, providing insights into the origins of other fluidised magmatic-hydrothermal breccias such as kimberlites. Discordant dikes and pipes with rounded clasts of metasedimentary calc-silicate rocks and minor felsic and mafic intrusions extend several kilometres upwards and outwards from the contact aureole of the 1530 Ma Williams Batholith into overlying schists and amphibolites. The brecciation initiated at depths >10 km and may have resulted in surface breaching. We used analytical equations for particle transport to estimate clast velocities (eÆ 20 ms-1), approaching volcanic ejecta rates (up to 80 ms-1). The wide range of CO2 fluid inclusion densities (up to 150 MPa), the localisation of the base of the breccias in contact aureoles, and the scale and discordancy of the bodies suggests the breccia transport process was triggered by an abrupt release of overpressured fluid. At these depths, such extreme behaviour may have been achieved by release of dissolved fluids from crystallising magma, in combination with a strongly fractured and fluid-laden source, sitting under a strong, low permeability barrier, and such parameters may be analogous to the asthenosphere/lithosphere boundary in the case of kimberlite initiation. The relationship of these breccias to the Ernest Henry iron-oxide-Cu-Au deposit suggests they may have been either fertile or æfailedÆ orebody feeders.

The Central Andes in Peru, Chile, Bolivia, and Argentina , contain two contiguous terranes which were accreted to Gondwanaland between the end of the Devonian and the end of the Triassic. These terranes, Arequipa in the north, and Chilenia in the south, differ from each other in the timing and style of their metallogenic development. However, they contain over 90% of the Central Andean porphyry copper resource. The copper porphyries in the Arequipa terrane are Paleocene to lower Oligocene in age, whereas the Chilenia deposits are mid-upper Cretaceous and mid-upper Miocene. Porphyry copper deposits occur outside these terranes, but are all Miocene in age. Miocene porphyry-style mineralisation also exists in the Arequipa terrane, but is copper-deficient and gold-rich. The accreted terranes may have favoured porphyry and other styles of copper mineralisation because they possessed relatively thin continental crust compared to adjacent parts of the Andes. Crustal thickening which commenced at about 30 Ma in the Arequipa terrane coincided with a major change to polymetallic, precious metal mineralisation which commonly displays high sulfidation characteristics.

The increasing need for alternative energy sources as well as the less clearly perceived but equally increasing demand for non-fuel minerals has resulted in extensive exploitation of near surface deposits. Many such deposits have depleted reserves and mining corporations are increasingly turning their attention to deposits, with thicker overburden, less competent materials, steeper dips and more complex structure. These deposits pose mine layout, geotechnical and equipment problems as well as the need for large outputs to achieve economies of scale. The paper describes the major problems and operational solutions for such deposits using continuous excavation and transport equipment.

Continuing the systematic investigation of the influence of elements on the properties of lead(1). If the effects of additions of copper (up to 0.3%) on Port Pirie lead have now been determined in so far as creep rate is concerned.The results in the present paper contain also a survey of the influence of copper on the micro-structure of lead, a feature which has not appeared in the previous papers of this series. Further, it has now become known that creep is but little related to the more usually determined properties such as hardness and tensile strength. Since, however, these properties are of considerable importance in connection with the fabrication and use of this metal. Brinell hardness determinations have also been made and are here included.It is becoming more and more realised also that to be useful, creep data should refer to stresses of the order of those used in practice. This is due to the fact that as soon as deformation takes place, the properties of the metal are automatically changed. Lead does, of course, creep during industrial use, and probably (in lead chamber construction for example) extensions of the order of 5%...

Willyamite from the type locality, Consols mine, Broken Hill, N.S.W., has been re-examined, and found to consist of zones with widely different Co:Ni ratios. The name willyamite is redefined to include the portion of the (Co, Ni)SbS series with cobalt in excess of nickel. Willyamite is pseudo-cubic, with the three axes equal to within 0·001 A.

The area between Merrygoen and Digilah is located on a structural high that separates the Sydney Basin from the Great Artesian Basin, and hence the stratigraphic succession of younger rocks overlying the basement is relatively thin. The stratigraphy is briefly described and it is shown that fluvial sedimentation prevailed from Upper Permian through to Middle Jurassic times. Flint clays occur in the Permian, Triassic and Jurassic but only those in the Jurassic appear to have commercial value at present. The chemical, mineralogical, and physical properties of the flint clays are discussed.

The greater part of this paper comprises the material used in a lecture delivered to the South Queensland Branch of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in September, 1949. It contains little in the way of original matter, its main purpose being to call attention to the need for research into the properties of Queensland coals and to indicate some of the lines such investigations might profitably follow.Since the lecture was given the Powell Duffryn (1949) 1 report, which has made an excellent start along these lines, has been printed. This report is, however, only a beginning, though a big one, and there is ample room for many years of work along similar lines.The paper is based largely on the work of de Jersey (1946, 1949)2,3,4,5 and Jones and de Jersey (1947)6, but these workers in turn owe a debt to the work of many British and American investigators, too many to enumerate. High speed diamond cutting has extensive applications in civil and mining engineering. A project involving the diamond sawing of black granite is investigating the nature of the diamond cutting process. A sawing machine was devised to adjust the cutting load and measure cutting speed. Cuttings were collected for size distribution analysis. The surface produced by interaction between diamond. grits and the rock was subjected to microscopic investigation. Increasing load prompts the proportional increase in the cutting rate. But the mean size of cuttings shows little change. The photomicrographs of the cutting tracks indicate neither patterns of crack formation nor signs of the ductile behaviour of the rock. A diamond cutting model for hard rock is formulated on these observations. Diamond cutting is a process of surface failure, which advances in four stages. The polycrystalline characteristics of a hard rock and the action of high-speed diamond grits guarantee the creation of crack nuclei which develop into cracks in various directions. This network crisscrossing cracks enable the stripping of this surface layer from the rock.

The Otago and Southland lignite deposits represent by far the largest known fossil energy resources in New Zealand. Despite their size they have remained virtually untouched since exploration in the 1970s and 1980s defined their extent. In total there is an estimated 10.9 billion tonnes of lignite in 13 defined fields in Otago and Southland. Much of the exploration work only targeted seams at shallow depth and it is highly probable that there are further resources at depth in the fields that have been explored to date.   L&M Lignite Limited (L&M) holds exploration permits over a number of lignite deposits and is currently engaged in pre-feasibility studies to investigate the potential of the lignites for gasification. L&M is focussing its studies on the Hawkdun and Ashers-Waituna deposits. Coal quality in these deposits, particularly Ashers-Waituna, is highly suitable for gasification. In total the two deposits contain 1647 Mt of potentially recoverable lignite. L&M has engaged a variety of consultants to progress this project. The Hawkdun and Ashers-Waituna deposit databases have been re-evaluated and the resources remodelled. Further drilling has been carried out and the coal quality database has been expanded. The baseline project is to develop a mine to feed a plant that will produce liquids, specifically low-sulphur diesel and naptha, using the Fischer-Tropsch process. The project anticipates a staged development of 10 000 barrel per day units, each requiring mining at the rate of 12 700 tonnes of lignite per day. The production of other products including ammonia-urea, methanol, hydrogen and electric power is also under study.

The author contends that geoscience is presently under-utilised in the rock fragmentation by blasting process. Before we can set standards in this area, the following is required: mine geologists need to gain a better understanding of the blasting process and the blasting team needs to obtain a better appreciation of geology. Both groups need to be informed of what can be done to improve blasting outcomes, why it is necessary and how it can be achieved. By working closely together, both the geoscience toolkits and blasting expertise can be applied and focused on priority blast sensitive issues, with potential to improve mine economics and safety. Finally, and ideally, mine geologists need to take a leadership role in raw rock mass data collection and data management, and invited to take an active role in rock mass related behaviour data collection, integration and presentation.This paper attempts to provide insight into all these prerequisites for setting a new standard for collaboration and mutual learning in this strategic opportunity area. The potential for blasting to leverage downstream processes is highlighted. Blasting objectives and blast design principles are introduced along with the required rock mass related inputs. Some hazardous geological materials and environmental conditions are described, along with how they can affect operational complexity.Four case examples are used to illustrate the need for closer liaison between geology and blasting professionals. The first related to grade control blasting, aims to demonstrate how a blasting geology approach can add significant value. Case example two demonstrates how geological models and bench face analysis can assist with fragment control. The third and fourth case examples involve an overview of two case studies where timely geological and geotechnical knowledge input and intervention into blasting activities may have reduced losses due to blast initiated open pit slope collapses.CITATION:Little, T N, 2017. Essential features of the role of the fill material in mechanized cut and fill mining are discussed, with particular emphasis on its dewatering and strength development after emplacement. The fill material is regarded as a chemically-reactive porous medium, the most important property of which is permeability. Methods are described for measurement of permeability and other fill properties and results of such measurements applied to develop an orderly approach to the operation.

The Huntly West Mine has undergone significant changes in the last two years, which will affect the remainder of the mine's life. The paper describes the evolvement of plans and an overview of the technical considerations made in planning for and implementing the first New Zealand longwall operation. The technical investigations involve the longwall equipment, exploration, ventilation and strata control. The focus on these areas was to ensure that unacceptable project risks were addressed. Implementation of longwall mining at West Mine is planned in three phases, Development, Panel One extraction trial, and Full Longwall operation.   At present the development phase is complete, longwall installation is in progress and production start-up is planned for the end of August, 1991.

In the Broken Hill South mine tile practice of issuing to the miner a quantity of fuse and a box of caps from which he made up the "rods" required for a particular blast, has been abandoned. Instead, capping stations have been established, and the miner can now obtain, from the magazines, fuses cut to accurate lengths with the detonators attached.Various types of fuse-cutting machines and crimping devices are available, but only those used by the Broken Hill South Mine Ltd. are described in this paper.The fuse-cutting machine, designed by the engineering staff, is an electrically driven unit fitted with a gear box for the purpose of adjusting the rate at which the fuse is fed to the cutting device, thereby enabling fuses of various lengths to be accurately severed from the main coil of fuse.The machine in question is designed to cut 4, 6, and 8-ft. fuses, but no difficulty should be experienced in designing a machine to cut fuses to any required lengths.

In mining, water management is an operational necessity, requiring planning and detailed engineering, as well as risk assessment. Yet, the hydrology of streams and aquifers typically extends well beyond the boundaries of mine operations and intersect with environmental and social values. Mine managers often plan, design and assess the impact of water management activities (such as dewatering, excess water disposal and flood management) with a mine site or process specific focus. The challenge is that the impacts are spatial, long-term and complex – and may be cumulative across multiple mine sites. Further, there is usually little consideration of the feedbacks and interactions between surface water, groundwater and catchment hydrology. Failure to understand these processes can lead to poor decisions and increased costs. The Velvet gold orebody (153 Koz Au) is located near the Kanowna Belle gold deposit in the Boorara Domain of the Kalgoorlie Terrane, a subdivision of the Archaean Eastern Goldfields Superterrane (Swager et al, 1990). Gold mineralisation at Velvet is hosted within an intrusion of intermediate composition that broadly follows a sub vertical hanging wall splay of the Fitzroy Shear Zone.Velvet was discovered in 2003 during an underground exploration drilling program targeting potential strike extensions to the Kanowna Belle deposit. Diamond drill hole KDU1595 returned a downhole intercept of 36 m grading 4.6 ppm Au approximately 500 m west of the deposit and at a vertical depth of 700 m below surface in the immediate hanging wall of the primary Kanowna Belle host structure, the Fitzroy Shear Zone. Subsequent drilling completed following the initial discovery, from both surface and underground collar positions, failed to replicate this result.In 2014, KDU1595 was resurveyed gyroscopically and the mineralised intercept correctly located. Additional drilling was undertaken to follow-up the repositioned discovery hole. Challenges included poor drilling angles through the Fitzroy Shear Zone, excessive deviation during drilling and the unknown geometry of the target. Navigational drilling helped to successfully penetrate the Fitzroy Shear Zone and in April 2015, drill hole KDU3234 returned a significant downhole intercept of 45 m grading 5.6 ppm Au.Additional drilling success resulted in a decision to develop a 600 m drive to serve as a dual-purpose access for further exploration and mining. This was a potential risk considering that the orebody geometry was unknown and all significant drilling results were clustered within a 50 m × 50 m panel. Development commenced in June 2015 and the first ore cut taken in April 2016. Geological mapping and structural interpretation, together with multi-element and spectral analysis of drill samples has enabled several other target areas to be identified for exploration. The Velvet mining area is critical to continued production at Kanowna Belle. Gold placers can be difficult to locate in areas where tectonic activity and paleogeography have changed significantly since placer formation. Existing placer exploration models are useful in areas that have a relatively simple geological history, identifiable relationships with parent sources, or a history of placer mining. However, exploration becomes increasingly difficult in areas where tectonic activity and sedimentary recycling repeatedly redistribute the gold. Gold placers in the Waitaki River catchment, North Otago, New Zealand have no primary source within the catchment. During the Eocene placer gold was transported by a river ('Buster River') that flowed in a northeast direction from Central Otago toward a coastline at Maerewhenua, North Otago. This river and coastal system was inundated by marine transgression during the middle Tertiary. Since the Miocene its placer deposits have been uplifted and eroded and any links with parent sources have been severed. Changes in paleogeography resulted in local reconcentration and local dilution of placer gold in different areas in the Waitaki catchment. Thin veneers of old Waitaki River gravels (Kurow Gravels), containing gold recycled from the older placers, have been deposited unconformably on strath surfaces cut into Tertiary or older rocks. These gravels along with remnant Eocene fluvial and shallow marine strata provide potential placer exploration targets. Uplift and erosion of non-auriferous rocks in the Waitaki catchment to the west and north of the study area has resulted in considerable dilution of potential placer deposits downstream, especially in areas of gravel aggradation. We present a placer exploration model that is founded on answering fundamental questions pertaining to the paleogeography and geological history of the sediments associated with the placers.
