The main factors which influence disposal of mine waste under New Zealand conditions are identified and discussed: namely, geological conditions which produce soft weather-sensitive waste, wet and cold winters which affect productivity in such waste, elevated seismicity which affects stability and the need for water rights which involve public participation. The waste disposal scheme for the Martha Hill Project is described, thereby illustrating how these factors influence the planning of a current mine strippings and tailings disposal scheme.

Geophysical anomalies result from the passage of hydrothermal fluids through rocks. Interpretation of these anomalies, when integrated with available geological and geochemical data, assists the construction of a conceptual model of the original hydrology of the system. The original extent of a geothermal system is often indicated by the distribution of low resistivity argillic clay alteration. Quartz-adularia vein deposits, silica sinters or stockwork (often mineralised) cause local increases in resistivity. Appropriately chosen electrical techniques can therefore be used to help target such structures. Airborne magnetic surveys have also proven useful in New Zealand epithermal exploration, because hydrothermal fluids destroy magnetite causing extensive demagnetisation anomalies. Ground magnetic surveys can sometimes be useful for geological interpretation on a local scale. Positive gravity anomalies may occur as a result of mineral precipitation (silica or calcite) in high porosity host rocks, while negative gravity anomalies can result from hydrothermal fracturing and leaching of relatively dense host rocks. The relative merits of these geophysical techniques as used in the exploration of epithermal mineral prospects are discussed, with particular reference to the Hauraki Goldfield. The preferred method for defining zones of quartz veining/silicification is vector or tensor gradient resistivity. Exploration strategies and technique refinements are suggested as a means of improving the resolution of potentially mineralised target structures, in a more efficient and cost effective manner.

Queensland Pacific Metals (QPM) is progressing its Townsville Energy Chemicals Hub (TECH) project to produce nickel and cobalt sulfates for advanced battery materials. Apart from the nickel and cobalt sulfates, the process also generates a hematite by-product (~640 ktpa). The hematite byproduct precipitated from the process, hereafter ‘hematite precipitate’, is high in Fe and particularly low in impurities. However, it is a fine <20 μm crystalline, hydrometallurgical precipitate and is produced as a filter cake containing a high moisture content of about 15 per cent. This is considerably different from natural hematite ore and is expected to change its performance during sintering. In the present study, laboratory scale sintering tests were undertaken to evaluate the potential impacts of substitution of the hematite precipitate for traditional magnetite concentrates and further for Australian hematite-goethite ores in a simulated industry base blend. Substitution of hematite precipitate for magnetite concentrates was found to slightly increase the sintering temperature required to achieve the strength of laboratory sinters. However, further substitution of hematite precipitate for Australian hematite-goethite ores slightly reduced the sintering temperature required to achieve the laboratory sinter strength. These results reflect the reduction in Al2O3 contents of the blends and are consistent with the trend observed in industry and pilot scale facilities. The reduction in sintering temperature generally correlates to a reduction in fuel rate in the larger scale sintering process. The pore structure of selected laboratory sinters was further examined and discussed in conjunction with sinter strength. The pore structure images highlighted the relative difference between the blends with the most obvious difference being seen at 1290°C which correlates well with the laboratory tumble index (TI). The laboratory sinter samples showed an increase in porosity and irregularity of pore shape, as hematite substitution increased demonstrating the correlation between a more porous structure and a lower TI.

In its industrial days, Hong Kong’s mining industry was thriving, benefitting from the mineral occurrences that are related to the regional Mesozoic igneous and hydrothermal activities.Hong Kong was unique in the mining sector as it was so small in landmass but with such a rich variety of commodities discovered. There are records of commercial exploitation of tungsten, iron, lead, silver, beryl, graphite, quartz, feldspar and kaolin in Hong Kong before 1981. Of these, most of them are located in the New Territories.The Lin Ma Hang lead mine was operated in the 19th century by the Portuguese and was abandoned in 1958. The Needle Hill tungsten deposit was discovered in 1935 during construction of the Jubilee Reservoir. The Ma On Shan iron mine, which operated for 70 years between 1906 and 1976, was the largest mine in the history of Hong Kong. The Mui Wo lead-silver mine on Lantau Island can be traced back to the Ming Dynasty 400 years ago. West Brother Island, which extracted graphite from 1952 to 1973, was levelled in the 1990s to make way for the development of the airport at Chek Lap Kok.Nowadays, these mines are disused and abandoned, but this extended abstract reviews the legacy of the mining industry in Hong Kong to understand the impact that it had on techniques, the economy and culture.CITATION:Chu, J C T and Chan, J S-L, 2015. Optimising pit slope stability and reducing strip ratio of a mining operation are two key tasks in geotechnical engineering. With a growing demand for minerals and an increasing cost associated with extraction, companies are constantly re-evaluating the viability of mineral deposits and challenging their geological understanding. Within Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO), the Structural Geology (SG) team investigate and collect critical data, such as point based orientations, mapping and geological inferences from adjacent pits to remodel deposits where previous interpretations have failed to account for structurally controlled slope failures. This work outlines the key methods utilised by the Structural Geology team which form the foundations of informed orebody knowledge and subsequent geotechnical design recommendations. This publication utilises the results from a recent analysis to highlight the benefits of this methodology and how it has impacted the economics of an operation through optimisation of a pit wall ‘cutback’ and crest relocation.

A common problem faced by underground mining operations around the world is airborne dust sourced from production and auxiliary processes. In most underground mining methods, air is generally directed through a limited number of drives and is thus more effective at carrying dust away from operational areas quickly. In a block caving operation, there are a number of ways to set up ventilation systems. In its simplest form the air is entering the extraction level through access drives and then split over the number of extraction drives—based on the pressure differences—without being regulated. This is the case at Northparkes Mines. Larger operations and panel caves most often utilise designated ventilation levels and ventilation raises with some form of regulation to ensure adequate airflow to all work areas.Northparkes Mines utilise electric loaders as a productive means to transport ore to the run-of-mine (ROM) bin, which have the added advantage of allowing the mine to require less airflow through the extraction drives as dilution of exhaust gases is no longer required. Dust was controlled during the operational period of the previous two block caves by using water spray bars in each of the drawpoints, which were seen as the main source of dust. These drawpoint spray bars only wet the surface of muck piles and require a lot of water to achieve an effect on the overall air quality. The drawpoint sprays can be remotely operated from mine control, whenever a loader is sent to bog a particular drawpoint. A significant amount of airborne dust is also generated during loading as rilling of material occurs, with further dust being generated during tramming and dumping activities as only limited mixing of the water and ore occurs. The water sprays are ineffective at precipitating dust that has already become airborne.When built, the currently operational E48 cave was fitted with drawpoint water sprays. As the cave is in a different orebody with higher silica content, the water sprays were not able to keep airborne dust and thus silica quantities under control efficiently. It was therefore necessary to find more sustainable solutions. The problem was further intensified by the concurrent load-haul-dump (LHD) processes across multiple extraction drives and tipping points, as well as secondary breaking, using non-explosive blasting and development activities occurring nearby.This paper describes the practical approach taken at Northparkes Mines to reduce personal dust exposure on the E48 extraction level. As the extraction level is one of the main contributors to airborne dust at the mine, it is believed that much can be learnt by focusing improvement efforts initially on this part of the mining process and later applying the effective solutions in other parts of the mine.CITATION:Vejrazka, C and Wyllie, A, 2014. The limit of pressure to which an underground dam may with safety be subjected, is a question that-as far as the writer knows has not received the same attention from authorities on engineering construction, or practical mining, that has been accorded to questions on which the design and strength of other structures or machines in connection with a mine are based. That dams may, under certain conditions, be constructed to resist water under great pressure is a known fact. But the difficulty of demonstrating beforehand that any proposed structure of this kind will withstand the pressure and be effective is, owing to the indeterminate nature of some of the risks to be provided against, very great. In the present state of our knowledge it may almost be laid down as a rule, that a dam of this kind should not be undertaken where grave consequences would attend failure until experience of structures where the physical conditions are similar, but where there are no such risks, has given assurance that such work would stand.In Mines and Minerals for May, 1900, there is published a paper by Mr. James McNaughton describing the construction of three underground dams in the iron mining district of Michigan.The first of these was put in to hold back a flow of 750 gallons per minute, which when pent up created a pressure of 276 pounds per square inch, showing that the height of the sustained column was about 635 &#183;feet. The TauTona (Sotho for Great Lion) Mine near Carletonville, which is one of AngloGold AshantiÆs most profitable operations in South Africa, has started a multi-million dollar expansion project that is expected to extend the operational life of the mine by at least three years. The project will also secure some 1900 jobs for existing workers and contract workers. The $US140 million project entails the development of the orebody to a record depth of almost 4 km underground. It means that TauTona, which already mines gold at the deepest levels in the world, will deepen its mining activities from 3600 m to a new record depth of 3910 m. There is great anticipation about the expansion program, especially because of new technology that will contribute to a safer working environment. It includes a simplified hoisting system that will minimise safety risks in conveyance activities. Due to the unique nature of this project, depth below surface and working through a three-tier shaft system, various innovative measures were incorporated into the planning of the endeavour. Special support equipment was designed to reduce cycle times and enable the crews to install the extensive support, prescribed by the mineÆs rock engineering department, right up to the face before every blast. Both declines dip at 23¦. The personnel/material (P/M) shaft is 4.4 m wide x 3.9 m high. This shaft is unique in that the conveyance will have an onboard driver. The rock shaft is 4.5 m wide x 3.6 m high. Rock will be hoisted with two, ten-tonne overturning skips. In both cases, P/M and rock, the winders were designed for the highest duty cycle, which is encountered during sinking.

The mining and milling groups at Batu Hijau are tasked with increasing SAG mill throughput by approximately ten per cent. Avenues used for this process are blasting and crushing optimisation, ore blending and predicting SAG mill throughput in relation to the geological model. This is in line with traditional æMine to MillÆ studies. At Batu Hijau, mill and mine sequencing cannot readily be configured to perform the surveys traditionally required by a æMine to MillÆ study while meeting the daily production target of 140 000 tonnes per day and processing from varying ore types in one pit. A program called BOCCOST (blasting optimisation crushing conveying optimising SAG throughput) has been implemented to capture approximately 200 variables from blasting, mining and milling operations and assign them to a common point in space in the geological model in real time. Interpretive analysis of data from BOCCOST is used to model relationships between the 200 variables to determine which and how these factors affect SAG throughput. Once these relationships are determined, the blasting, ore blending and crushing process can be optimised to generate a product that maximises mill throughput. The relationships modelled from BOCCOST are also used to generate a SAG mill throughput estimator, which can be coded into the production block model. The block model can be reconciled with the geological block model for correlation by geological domain. Once this relationship is established, SAG mill throughput domains can then be established for predicting SAG mill throughput. This SAG mill throughput estimator is then used in conjunction with revenue calculations to determine an ore cut-off, which combines these two elements to maximise metal production.

The Galandrud coalfield is located approximately 20 km south from the coast of the Caspian Sea, Ruyan town, on the north slopes of the Alborz mountain range, in the elevation between 500 m (the Galand River valley) and 1350 m. For the time being, 32 coal seams (generally of small thickness û 0.8 m on average) have been recognised within the. On the other hand 72 coal banks of balanced properties have been included in reserve calculation, which means that some of the seams consist of several banks. The general dip of strata belonging to the south limb is about 30¦ to the South (with drags close to the south overthrust, where the dip reaches 85¦), while the dip of beds at the north limb is rather steep and usually between 45 to 75¦ to the North. The coal quality is in a rank of high volatile bituminous coal. The steep dip, unstable lithological development, complicated tectonics and comparatively lower coal seam thickness are the characteristic features of the Galandrud deposit. Environmental protection of this area makes exploration and exploitation more complicated. During mine exploration several adits were driven at three levels with 50 m vertical distances. About 4000 m of gates and crosscuts were up to now driven. During mining test the down-cut mining method (with one cut), the strike cut mining method and the down-cut mining method with two cuts were tested. The paper describes outlines for the selection of mining methods on the base of classification of the effective hangingwalls and footwalls, hazards of mining operations, and possibilities of the mechanised mining.

The proper selection of a coal for a particular use depends on knowledge of fundamental data concerning the coals that offer, particularly their type and rank. Type of coal depends on the nature of the original plants and the environment in which they accumulated.Rank reflects the subsequent metamorphism of the coal, and is of two kinds-physical rank and chemical rank.INTRODUCTIONIn the different coalfields of the Commonwealth of Australia there occur many different kinds of coal which provide the coal-research worker with a wide range of material, but to the fuel technologist they represent complex problems in utilization.In the past it has been common practice to instal coal-using equipment of a design based on plant used in large industrial centres of other countries and then search for supplies of suitable coal. This has led to the transportation of coal mainly from New South Wales to other States, which have inadequate supplies of coal suitable for use in the equipment they have installed. However, modern economy and industrial practice demand local resources of coal for the development of industry, transport and domestic services, and a change in the old order is rapidly taking place. Technologists and engineers are now faced with the problem of designing and installing equipment to use whatever kind of coal is available in local coalfields.Much has been accomplished in this direction and important investigations are at present being carried out, but there still remains a wide field of problems for research.In planning and carrying out investigations into coal utilization it is essential that fundamental data and knowledge should be available and that its significance should be appreciated.

A recently-developed model is used as a tool to optimise the design of blasts used to create final walls in large open pit mines. The use of this tool has allowed present blasting practice and proposed designs to be evaluated to predict the likely extent of rock damage behind the final wall. The evaluation of the damage is dependent on the predominant local geology. Modelling of damage using the software allows the potential zones of rock damage to be evaluated under the following criteria: I . the extent of new fractures formed in the intact rock mass; and 2. the distance to which dilation and extension of existing discontinuities and pre-existing fractures will likely occur. The computer model has been used to examine present blasting practice and to estimate the damage induced by final and intermediate rows of blastholes. The results of current practices are presented in a visual form that allows simple comparisons to be made for any proposed changes in design. To confirm the predictions of the modelling, physical measurements are being undertaken at selected mines to quantify damage behind blast patterns, and experimental programs are underway to measure near-field vibration, or shock, levels. The computer modelling software is being used to qualify and improve the design of final rock slopes in large surface mining excavations, and to provide site engineers with well-defined design criteria for consistency in design. The model is seen to be just one of many tools which are being used in large open cut mining operations to gain an improved understanding of blasting and blast control.

SomincorÆs Neves Corvo Mine, one of the largest copper producers in Europe, is currently constructing a paste backfill plant in order to replace cemented rockfill in its bench and fill stopes and possibly replace hydraulic sandfill in the drift and fill stopes. A 250 m flow loop was constructed at the mine and the flow properties of various paste blends were investigated. Cycloned tailings and total tailings were both pumped successfully as pastes and were also combined with waste rock for additional testing. The pressure losses in 102 mm and 154 mm diameter pipeline were recorded at flowrates up to 60 m3/hr and are presented at slumps from 120 mm to 250 mm. The data showed the sensitivity of paste mixtures to slight changes in consistency, confirming the need for accurate control during paste production and distribution. The flow results clearly showed the different paste behaviour between cycloned and total tailings pastes and the change in properties at low and high slumps. In addition to pressure loss data, strength testing was done on 38 mm and 82 mm diameter samples. Further strength testing is ongoing at the mine using fly ash as a supplement to cement, reducing the overall binder cost. Preliminary engineering for the underground distribution system is briefly discussed, with reference to the siting of the plant. The Neves Corvo Mine is particularly shallow and alternative methods to pumping were sought in order to ensure sufficient hydraulic head for underground distribution. The comparison of options had to take into account the capital and operating costs, the operation of the plant and the impact on the future expansion of paste fill utilisation at Neves Corvo.

Gold placers in the Nokomai and Nevis valleys are dominantly Quaternary in age. They occur mainly in western tributaries of the upper Nevis, eastern tributaries of the middle and upper Nokomai, and in the trunk valleys themselves. Placer gold in both valleys is dominantly a-phase Au-Ag-Hg alloy. Au-Ag alloy is absent or rare in most of the deposits, except in the lower Nokomai. Alpha-Au-Ag-Hg alloy is typically coarse-grained (up to 2 cm), angular, and rarely flattened or folded. Crystalline texture, quartz intergrowths, and psuedo-hexagonal crystal-pluck cavities are common. Fluvial transport distance predicted from the maximum Flatness Index ofAu-Ag-Hg alloy particles is typically less than 10-20 km. Coarse (up to 2 cm) cinnabar is commonly associated with the Au-Ag-Hg alloy, and both were probably derived from hydrothermal sources in western tributaries ofthe upper Nevis and eastern tributaries of the upper Nokomai. Minor secondary Au-Ag-Hg alloy occurs locally in the lower Nokomai, where it coats or cements detrital a-phase Au-Ag-Hg and Au-Ag alloy particles. Au-Ag alloy dominates over Au-Ag-Hg alloy in the lower half of the lower Nokomai alluvial plain and gravel of a raised channel incised into semischist basement adjacent to the plain. The Au-Ag alloy is rounded and commonly flattened and folded. Crystalline texture, quartz intergrowths, and pluck cavities are rare, and a fluvial transport distance of 25-40 km is estimated from maximum Flatness Index ofAu-Ag alloy particles. The Au-Ag alloy, three types of gamet, magnetite, clinozoisite and well foliated schist boulders in the abandoned channel are not found in the pumpellyite-actinolite facies bedrock in the Nokomai. These components were derived from greenschist facies schist and sedimentary sources in Otago, many tens of kilometers north of the Nokomai catchment. They were transported to the Nokomai either in Wakatipu Glacier till or fluvio-glacial outwash that entered the valley via Nokomai Saddle, the confluence with the Mataura, or both.

Both blast furnace and steel furnace slags have been used extensively and successfully on main line railroads in the United States for more than 25 years. Annually, these slags are being used as ballast at the rate of about 4 million tonnes of blast furnace slag and 1 mil- lion tonnes of steel furnace slag, much of it on main line with 90 metric tonne car loadings. More steel furnace slag would be used if it was available. Both slags meet all the specification limits of the American Railway Engineering Association. Actual use on high density rail- roads has confirmed the long range economics of their use. Comparison of laboratory tests, such as Los Angeles abrasion, with actual field per- formance has shown conclusively that commonly used laboratory tests can not be used to accu- rately compare the quality of various types of ballast materials.

Pressures are foreseen for departments of metallurgy to make. radical changes in their undergraduate curricula. The curricula need to be made more attractive to high&apos;school students in -order to increase the number of enrolled students. The distinctive character of extractive metallurgy needs to be emphasised to resist encroachment by chemical engineering. There should be content relevant to each of the professional functions and, particularly, to&apos; society&apos;s broad expectations of metallurgists. Content, teaching methods, etc. need to be acceptable to women, mature-age -students, Aboriginals, and other groups, as well as young white males. Learning experiences should be negotiable by the students in response to the advent of learning packages delivered via personal computers. All of these needs could be satisfied by a radical change. in attitudes and objectives during the design; implementation and evaluation stages of . a new type of curriculum, using a wide range of problem-based learning experiences..

Soil improvement technologies have been widely employed over the recent decades to overcome tunnelling problems in difficult grounds, their range of application growing proportionally to the technological development. The constant advancement in the different mechanical (flexible and more powerful equipment) and electronic (enhanced reliability and direct quality control) aspects of these technologies, fostered the confidence of engineers and tunnellers and, ultimately, allowed the entire tunnel industry to approach difficult excavations in a safer and cost effective manner.This paper outlines the main features of commercially available soil improvement techniques, with particular emphasis on permeation grouting and jet grouting. These two technologies, developed concurrently in Europe and Japan, and there customarily adopted in the design of underground structures, have known extensive and extreme applications worldwide in recent years. Case histories and current practice of soil improvement techniques, as they apply to tunnelling, are also rendered.

The smelting, refining and hydrometallurgical operations practised in the winning of non-ferrous metals are associated with severe aqueous and high temperature corrosion problems.With the increasing costs of maintenenace and the utilization of computerization to control the processes, the trend in recent years has been to spend more capital on improved and proprietory grades of engineering materials, which offer greater reliability and more cost effective plant performance.The problems which have plagued stainless steel users for many years are the alloys&apos; poor performance in chloride or other halide media where pitting, crevice or chloride induced stress corrosion cracking may occur, have been essentially solved by the new proprietory grades. The controlled additions of minor alloying elements including rare earth metals have led to the development of stainless steels with high mechanical strengths, improved corrosion resistance, and high temperature corrosion resistance and structural stability.

The seams of black coal occurring in Victoria are so disturbed by faulting, wash-outs, thinning, etc., that it is necessary, for the prevention of costly errors in development, that close boring be undertaken so that the correct positions of the shafts, tunnels, main and auxiliary roadways can be set out in order that the area can be economically worked. The State Coal Mine has two boring plants continuously at work, which have given good service for the last twenty-five years.The information supplied herein is merely our experience in boring at the State Coal Mine over an extended period. The type of plant in use is that known as the Victoria Drilling Plant, equipped with an 11 h.p. portable oil engine, using power kerosene as fuel. It was purchased in 1914, complete with mechanism for cable drilling, capable of boring to a depth of 1500 ft. with a guarantee of 1000 ft., with Calyx cutters, boring rods and all necessary equipment for the sum of &#163;1473. The chief mechanical features of the plant are as follows:-The derrick is in the shape of a tripod (see Fig. 1), two of the legs being of steel channel built together to form a frame which, when lowered on to two sets of road wheels, forms a carriage for the transport of a portion of the boring equipment. The third leg is made of oregon in the form of a double bow, with bolts and distance pieces between the wooden sides. The top of this is hinged on to the steel frame, and the bottom is fitted into a cast iron block, having two small wheels to facilitate erection.
