There is a difference in design aspects between steel linings and rubber linings for grinding mills. The basic design rules for rub- ber are described as well as the liner designs for different applications.

Mining of sulfide-based ore deposits typically creates a potential for release sulfate and acid to groundwater, and many operating mines are thus predicted to require long-term post-closure treatment of groundwater. Toward the goal of selecting an optimal treatment, this paper compares costs of four demonstrated technologies for long-term treatment of sulfate-contaminated groundwater: in situ biological reduction (ISR), in situ permeable reactive barrier (PRB) composed of compost and zero-valent iron (ZVI), and two ex situ æpump-and-treatÆ technologies ù ex situ biological reduction, and ex situ nanofiltration with lime precipitation. Costs for each technology are estimated for treatment of a model aquifer system containing sulfate-contaminated groundwater, with the goal of treating 1 m3/min of groundwater from 1500 mg/L sulfate to a target level of 500 mg/L. (Metal removal is typically achieved by these technologies, and thus excluded from this analysis.) Costs are estimated for each technology as a function of treatment duration (ten to 60 years) and, for PRB and ISR, required replacement frequency (ten to 60 years). Estimated costs include capital and operation and maintenance, using a seven per cent net discount rate. Results indicate that ex situ technologies (biological reduction and nanofiltration with lime precipitation) are the most expensive. In situ technologies may be much less expensive, with PRBs having by far the lowest potential cost, followed by ISR as the next least expensive. However, actual costs for the in situ technologies are very sensitive to poorly constrained parameters, particularly the ZVI content of the PRB, and the effective life of PRB and ISR systems. This large cost uncertainty supports delaying remedial actions where viable, and suggests that feasibility analyses are generally warranted for specific applications to focus on these sources of uncertainty.

Conventional models, based on pulp kinetics, were regressed directly to steady-state data from a nine-stage platinum flotation plant, to provide a basis for optimisation studies. æFroth factorsÆ were used to characterise the froth in each stage and a ædepressant factorÆ was used for gangue minerals, to account for addition of depressant to the cleaners. These factors improved the fit, but differences between plant and model of up to 50 per cent were still present in a number of streams in the cleaning circuit. A new model was developed, which incorporated two rate constants for the recycle of particles from the froth. These parameters provided a workable approximation of the distribution of probabilities of particles being recycled in plant cells, depending upon where particles appeared at the surface. The feed streams were characterised by two pulp kinetic parameters and the above recycle parameters, for all minerals and all stages. The fit to the data was improved very significantly, when compared to the use of conventional pulp-based models with several pulp rate parameters. This relatively simple model did not require additional data from batch tests and it was suitable for plant simulations.Simulations of various strategies for plant operation were tested, allowing the simulator to vary the concentrate flows from all or some of the stages, in order to maximise platinum recovery. The simulator was imbedded in an automatic optimiser and constraints on chrome content or mass flow of final concentrate were used. The simulations of the existing circuits demonstrated that an improvement in recovery, (for a constant concentrate mass) of about 0.5 per cent was possible, by optimising all concentrate flows. A significant reduction in the flow of scavenger concentrate and an increase in the recycle flows in the cleaners were noted. The results of simulations of various changes to the circuit configuration are also discussed. An increase in recovery of 1.4 per cent (for constant concentrate mass) has been achieved in recent simulations, through circuit changes. However, it was necessary to keep the mass pull of concentrate, per unit area, within typical limits.

The implementation, during recent years, of the concept of distributing chilled water to improve cooling at the working faces represents a very important innovation for the mining world. In a logical extension to that concept it has been recognized that distribution of the cooling water at high pressure would provide a potential source of energy for driving water powered hydraulic machinery such as rockdrills, water jets for moving rock, and support props, in the workings. With this in mind, the Research Organization of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa is pursuing the development of such a dual system that will provide cooling in a deep mine and, at the same time, drive hydraulic machinery. A comprehensive design of such a system has been completed and has shown the concept to be entirely feasible technically using technologies currently available. A pilot system is working in a mine shaft 2000 m deep giving a pressure of 20 MPa at the bottom of the shaft and distributing the cold water into the workings at a pressure of 17 MPa. The system shows considerable potential for improving existing mining methods and will open the way for the development of new mining methods for deep mining operations.

Modern technology and the need for published results have created the tendency for exploration to concentrate on drilling and assaying rather than building a broader geological understanding. Though grade is vitally important to a resource estimate, density and volume are also very important aspects that require equal consideration. Wet tropical nickel laterites are developed in humid environments over ultramafic bedrock where the nickel and cobalt are enriched to economic levels by weathering, leaching and supergene processes. These laterites often occur over rugged terrain at higher elevations where there is sufficient rain and stability for the long lateritisation process to occur. For nickel laterite profiles, the variable terrain and significant material type changes within the relatively thin profile make density and particularly volume estimation, just as significant as grade in resource estimation and assessment of resource risk. Drilling alone is generally not a cost-effective way to reduce the risk in laterite volume estimation to acceptable levels. Surface geological mapping, high resolution topographic data and other information such as ground penetrating radar (GPR) can be used very effectively to improve volume estimates. These data types are all differently structured, have different data density and quality and may potentially overlap. Integration of these disparate data types provide the most cost-effective approach to modelling wet tropical nickel laterite volumes and minimising risk. The use of spectral data has traditionally been for obtaining mineral information and for mapping out alteration systems. The output from these data is typically in the form of mineral assemblages and data on relative proportions of minerals. However there is much more than just mineral information in the spectral data. Most importantly, the data allow the user to obtain vital information on mineral chemistry for some key alteration minerals. The mineral chemistry data allow the users to evaluate multiple phases of alteration of the same key mineral species, and to assess which phase is related to mineralisation. Mineral indices can be extracted from the spectral data and plotted to represent variations in the chemistry and relative proportions of key mineral phases as downhole, section and three-dimensional (3D) plots. These data can also be compared with the spatial distribution of the mineralisation by integration with geochemical and logging data. Through spatial and statistical evaluation the mineral information obtained using spectral analysis can provide vital information to assist in building alteration models and therefore improve targeting for further drilling and exploration.

Changes to water industry practice are required as a consequence of the Council of Australian Governments water reform agenda which binds all states and territories to a range of measures intended to drive new efficiency, sustainability, higher value use and proper provision for environmental needs. Queensland is implementing its reforms program through its water resource planning process, a legislatively underpinned program that provides for a new level of social, economic and environmental security. A water resource plan for the Fitzroy Basin has been finalised and its implementation plan, which details infrastructure operational arrangements for the basin, is due to be released later this year. The mining industry is a major contributor to the economy of the Basin, and although a comparatively minor water consumer, is now aligning its water use practices with the stateÆs maturing integrated resource management paradigm. This new culture presents both challenges and opportunities. Water reform in the Fitzroy basin is well advanced. The processes and institutional arrangements that have been developed are of significant importance to the aspirations of current and future minerals development. This paper outlines the current status of those reforms and the likely institutional framework for the near future. The paper also discusses how the reforms impact on the availability, access and security of water available to mining interests.

Mining is essential for facilitating human development particularly as demand for critical minerals grows. However, over the mine life cycle, the environment is permanently changed. Once mining ceases, mine-affected land can leave significant legacy issues on the surrounding environment if not managed. Therefore, mine closure planning is critical. Mine closure occurs over large scales often with the aim of recreating resilient ecosystems over mined landscapes with mitigated negative impacts. The natural state of the landscape and the environmental risks over planning time-scales are largely driven by climate. Climate change is expected to impact different parts of the post-mining landscape, from stable landform design (soil erosion mitigation) to revegetation efforts and pit lake management. Consequently, mine closure plans may need to account for a non-stationary and uncertain future climate, that may be both different to the current climate and evolve during the mine life and post-closure. Here a new data-based approach is presented for incorporating climate change projections in mine closure planning, based on the recently released Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6) climate data used in the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) assessment report. The approach: (i) characterises closure-related attributes of the future climate, and (ii) identifies the amount (and direction) of change expected to occur, and its uncertainty, focusing on five metrics for demonstrative purposes and initially describing changes in erosive potential below. This provides information on the type of future environment (ie the changing baseline) that mine closure should plan towards, and identifies rehabilitation options that may be susceptible to increased risks from climate change.

However, a decline in the demand forsulphuric acid may limit the amount of pyrite thatcan be roasted before cyanidation.

A neutron irradiation technique has been developed which is suitable for the determinat- ion of the iron and aluminium content of iron ore fines (-6 mm particle size) on a moving rubber conveyor belt. The determination of iron entails measure- ment with a NaI(Tl) gamma ray detector of the characteristic prompt gamma rays (7.64 MeV) due to thermal neutron capture in iron, while the determination of aluminium is based on thermal neutron activation analysis. For the latter a second detector must be placed down- stream to monitor the 1.78 MeV gamma radiation emitted after activation of aluminium. Although conveyor speed has no effect on the Fe measurement, it has an adverse influence on the aluminium signal, and the belt speed should not exceed 0.1 m/s if good accuracy is required. Static trials on a 460 mm rubber conveyor belt with constant ore geometry indicate that for iron an accuracy of ¦ 1.2% Fe (2a) can be achieved for crushed run-of-mine ore at

The high oas emissions which are associated with high production lonowall mining have provided a need to investigate the limitations and reouirements of the various gas control methods. The major relationships between oassiness and various other parameters are presented with computer analysis being adopted to assess the respective correlations. Some of the relationships are studied in detail with emphasis being placed on methods for overcomino the changes in conditions resulting from high production levels. The importance of the various drainage systems which can be adopted to combat high gassiness levels are analysed. Logical and necessary steps are also proposed for gassiness prediction and data monitoring as well as various combinations of gas drainage systems. The gassiness prediction methods which are discussed outline the need for a sound knowledge of the established worldwide methods together with a comprehensive study of the local mining and geological environment in order to develop a system which is adaptable to the changing conditions. This is particularly important in mines where high coal production levels are anticipated and the need for accurate gassiness relationships is essential.

This paper examines the complex interplay of deposit characteristics, mining plans, tailings disposal techniques and rehabilitation requirements on planning for mineral sands operations. All component parts of this mining cycle are interdependent and cannot be evaluated in isolation when optimising a mineral sands operation. This is most evident when projects are large-scale or involve resources that contain complexities such as high slimes content, consolidated hard band materials, acid forming materials and radioactive materials. Projects located in environmentally sensitive areas add further to the need for more stringent planning. This paper describes the analysis techniques adopted by Hatch to evaluate mining and tailings placement options for a dredging and floating concentrator system. The principles and methods used in the analysis are applicable to any mining system involving the complexities listed above. The focus of this paper is on the reconstitution of mined material as tailings and the impact of this process on mining schedules and tailings construction and placement options.

The minerals industry has been given an opportunity to grow and continue to advance again in an environment where there is the potential to reap big rewards for efficiency improvements due to buoyant metal prices and the growing demand of markets in Asia. Improving efficiency may also provide a better return compared to risks of expansions and bringing new projects online due to limited human and financial capital.An opportunity for improvement presents itself in the area of mine-mill reconciliation, which entails the quantification of the variance between measurement points along the mining value chain. Reconciliation factors are calculated from the variance between respective sections within the mining sequence. These factors are commonly used as key performance indicators to provide a check on the performance of the operations. Over parts of the mining value chain, there is a fair understanding of the reconciliation between the Resource and Reserve estimates and the measured metallurgical plant inputs and product outputs through understanding of the mine-mill interface. The quality of reconciliation data gathered across the mine and plant is generally not well established due to practices employed in generating the data. The reconciliation variances are often a function of data accuracy and quality used in the comparison. In general, the sources and magnitude of measurement and sampling errors and their impact on reconciliation are not that well understood. Examples of the current practices of mass measurement, sampling, sample preparation, chemical analysis and quality assurance for broken ore and across the metallurgical process stream are considered. Guidelines are given for those reconciliation elements that are identified as requiring a high degree of confidence for Mineral Resource/Reserve and metal accounting reporting. The Islamic Republic of Mauritania is a large country of over 1 000 000 square kilometres situated on the Atlantic coast of north-west Africa. It is bounded to the north by Western Sahara and Algeria, to the east by Mali, and to the south by Mali and Senegal. With the exception of a narrow strip in the south along the Senegal River valley, the country lies entirely within the Sahara. The north of the country is largely devoid of vegetation, and it is estimated that 90 per cent of the population of 2.1 million people live in the southern quarter of the country. From about the turn of the century, Mauritania was ruled by the French from Dakar in Senegal and, until 1960 when it obtained independence from the French, Mauritania did not have a capital. Today, the capital is Nouakchott, home to an estimated 600 000 Moors of mixed Arab, Berber and African descent. After independence in 1960, disputes over Spanish Sahara to the north led to a military coup in 1978 and it was not until 1991 that a democratic constitution was adopted. The new constitution declares Mauritania to be an `Islamic, African, and Arab Republic.' It provides for an executive president, elected for a six-year term, and for a bicameral legislature, consisting of a national assembly and a senate. The first presidential and legislative elections were held in 1992 under United Nations' supervision. Mauritania's economy is predominantly pastoral, and the country depends heavily on foreign aid. Its principal export industries are iron ore mining (about ten million tonnes per annum from mines near Fderik in the north) and fishing. Mines d'Or d'Akjoujt SA (MORAK), a company in which General Gold Resources NL (GGR) has 42.5 per cent equity, produces over 50 000 ounces of gold per annum, which represents the third largest export industry in the country.

Cleaner Production stands for a proactive and preventive approach to industrial environmental management and aims for process- and/or product-integrated solutions that are both ecologically and economically efficient (æeco-efficiencyÆ). Pioneers in the field were large manufacturing and processing industries in the USA (since the late-1970s), but it took until the early-1990s before Cleaner Production was generally recognised as a valuable approach for large and medium sized enterprises. The application of Cleaner Production in mining and minerals, metals and energy production appears to lag behind other sectors, such as manufacturing and processing. This paper starts with a discussion of the Cleaner Production concept and provides examples of its application from a few selected Australian mining and minerals processing industries. This evidences that Cleaner Production can achieve significant reductions in environmental impact, in terms of reduced waste and emission generation and in terms of conservation of materials, energy and water, while simultaneously reducing operating costs. The paper then investigates a number of key issues pertaining to the implementation of Cleaner Production; ie organisation and management of Cleaner Production activities, effective tools for mastering the Cleaner Production concept as a way of life, and performance measurement.

Sulfur isotope data are available for 18 low-sulfide orogenic gold systems hosted by the Lachlan Orogen in eastern New South Wales including those in the northern Hill End Trough (Hargraves, Hill End, Napoleon Reefs, Sofala-Wattle Flat, Stuart Town, Windeyer) and adjacent areas (Bodangora, Lucknow, Springfield), the Gilmore Fault Zone (Adelong, Sebastopol) and those in the Parkes district (Calarie, London-Victoria, Wyoming One-Myall United). Other systems for which data are available include Mongarlowe, Murrumbateman, McMahons Reef and Yalgogrin. The d34S data for many of the larger deposits including Adelong, Bodangora, Calarie, Hargraves, Hill End London-Victoria, Lucknow, Sebastopol, Sofala-Wattle Flat, Stuart Town and Windeyer (Group 1) are all very similar and have average d34S values close to zero per mil. Near 0ë d34S signatures imply that sulfur was sourced from a magmatic reservoir. Furthermore, the large Wyoming One deposit has d34S values significantly below 0ë with the data implying that sulfur was sourced from a fractionated magmatic reservoir. Group 2 deposits include those at Mongarlowe, Murrumbateman, Napoleon Reefs, McMahons Reef and Springfield . These deposits have average d34S values significantly above 0ë. With the exception of Springfield where sulfur was probably sourced from the Hill End Trough, Group 2 deposits are an order of magnitude smaller than Group 1 deposits. The results suggest that many of the larger orogenic-related gold deposits hosted by the Lachlan Orogen in eastern New South Wales derived sulfur and gold as a result of leaching and recycling from a magmatic reservoir. Alternatively, there may have been direct mantle-derived input; however, this is considered unlikely on geological grounds. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. As Project Managers for the Blair Athol Coal Mine Project, CMPS selected a number of computer systems to assist in project control. The areas where computers were used were: 1) Planning & Scheduling 2) Procurement Reporting 3) Document Control 4) Accounting 5) Cost Control 6) Control of project management and engineering manhours The computer packages selected were generally effective in their own areas. During 1982, CMPS acquired an in-house project control package called GC/Cue. Project control systems for the project are progressively being set up on this system. The advantages of this type of system are: 1) Improved accessibility of information, due to on-line operation and the use of VDU's. 2) Improved turn around time for computer runs and production of reports. 3) Improved presentation and format of reports. 4) Lower costs.

The Argyle AK1 orebody was discovered in 1979 and subsequently found to be a large, economically viable reserve with high grade diamondiferous ore. Production began via an open pit operation at the end of 1985 and has continued for some 25 years to present day. This, however, will come to an end in the next few years with production moving to an underground operation via block-cave mining methods.A series of studies from 2001 - 2005 was carried out; diamond drilling commenced after approval in 2006, from an exploration drive to determine the likelihood of the current proposed block cave operation.In 2006, development of the block cave project began, in order to realise the part of the orebody below the extent of the open pit mining operation.Development of the block cave technique, comprising an undercut level beneath the target zone of the orebody with subsequent extraction level 15 - 20 m beneath, relies largely on a number of block-caving parameters (hydraulic radius, rock type, structure and orientation of stress and grade of the orebody). These all have an influence on cave ability and eventual profit of the operation. Evaluation of further potential for taking this orebody beyond the block cave phase with options such as sublevel-caving are being considered for the UG-2 portion of the resource/reserve. Diamond drilling for this work is currently under revise.The challenges faced in transitioning form the surface operations to the underground, comprising a changing workforce, converging development drives, underground aquifers, major excavations and transportation of ore via automation are intriguing.

The aim of all modelling is to replicate geological reality as closely as possible using available data. This paper is aimed at one end of the spectrum, where very limited data is combined with intuitive geological ideas to synthesise models for either target definition or for determining minimum viable mining scenarios. Interactive 3D modelling allows a satisfactory hypothetical geometry of surfaces to be assembled, and provides a fast quantitative method for generating targets. As data flows from exploration, an evolving geological model assists with the progressive evaluation of a prospect. Two case histories are described where this approach has been used successfully, the Mosquito Hill Prospect in Queensland and the Longwood Ranges Platinum Prospect in New Zealand. The possibility is also discussed of hypothetically modelling an orebody which has yet to be discovered. The proper description of an orebody is the foundation upon which all mine design and planning is undertaken. The volumetric accuracy of the model is crucial in valuing an orebody. Geologists must form a geometry which matches the conceptual view of the ore occurrence and ensure that they understand how the computer system used calculates volumes. If the underlying assumptions inherent in the method conflict in any way with the conceptual model visualised for the ore occurrence, then that method must not be used.
