Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are computerised management systems for spatial data, offering improved data management, extensive data manipulation techniques and greater understanding of data. At the Wangaloa Coal Mine, South-East Otago, ArcGIS is being used to manage, integrate, analyse and visualise the diverse range of datasets being generated from an interdisciplinary research team. GIS will assist with identifying spatial and temporal patterns associated with the current site rehabilitation strategy. This paper will present an overview of how GIS can be a useful tool for understanding ecological recovery during mine site rehabilitation.   The Wangaloa opencast coal mine, owned by Solid Energy NZ Ltd, was closed in 1989 after more than 40 years of operation. Rehabilitation efforts involving more than 60 000 native plants began in October 2001. At Wangaloa sample points were randomly selected at 100 m intervals and recorded using a differential GPS. Plant, soil and invertebrate data have been collected at each sample point. Plots of 8 - 9 plants have been established within approximately 5 m of each sample point. Since September 2003 seasonal monitoring of plant growth and survival has been carried out. Chemical and physical datasets have been generated from soil collected in June and December 2003 for each sample point. A more restricted dataset is being generated for soil collected on a seasonal basis from March 2004. Plant and soil characteristics from these datasets have been attached to each sample point and GIS layers have been created. Relationships between data layers can be explored based on their spatial patterns. Examples presented from Wangaloa include distribution of planting success and temporal variation; temporal change in pH; interpolated pH map; digital elevation model; relationships between planting success and growth with pH and organic matter. GIS is proving to be a valuable tool on the integrated project at Wangaloa.

The basic model for the evaluation of any coal-bearing property is the cash flow projection, the major components of which are operating costs, capital charges, taxation and revenue. A range of cash flow projections can be produced by varying the assumptions which underlie the operating costs, by assuming various forms of capital funding, by making assumptions as to future taxation and by speculating upon the present and future market value of the product. As for any model, the informational inputs and assumptions are vital because, no matter how sophisticated the processing, the informational inputs and assumptions cannot be improved by it. That is to say, the validity of the output (the total evaluation itself) cannot be of greater certainty or significance than that of the inputs. The total evaluation can of course be expressed in a number of ways such as the Discounted Cash Flow (D.C.F.) Rate of Return, the Net Present Value or, the Payback Period. The foregoing statement may seem trite. However, it is necessary to be clear about it so as to avoid unnecessary complication and a preoccupation with techniques as opposed to the informational inputs and assumptions. So far as techniques are concerned, much has been written and said about them during the last decade. Most of us have heard, if not always understood, something about probabilistic models, Monte Carlo simulation, sensitivity and risk analysis to say nothing of inflationary costing and the relative merits of developing cash flows in terms of current or constant money. Those techniques have their value, particularly if they can serve to illuminate conclusions which could not be reached on a simple and even perhaps on an intuitive basis. I am, however, reminded of one major coal mining project in which 20 or more major variables were identified, many cash flow projections were run on the computer and a detailed sensitivity analysis was carried out. The major conclusion reached was that the D.C.F. Rate of Return was predominantly sensitive to variations in selling price and operating cost. Of course, the funding and fiscal elements of a cash flow projection have to be dealt with as rigorously as possible. However, in the development of any coal property, capital requirements and taxation are, in part at any rate, dependent upon the assumed operational parameters. If the latter are misjudged, the whole evaluation process is deeply affected. The same is true of revenue, in the sense that, the positive cash flow is a function of output as well as selling price and again, misjudgements about achievable and maintainable levels of production also deeply affect the final evaluation. I shall try to underline the fundamental influence of the technological factors upon lead times, capital costs, operating costs, taxation, funding and the achievable and maintainable levels of production. In turn, these affect the whole question of coal property evaluation and indeed, the likely success or failure of any coal mining venture. I make no apology therefore that this paper does not set out to discuss the more esoteric aspects of the evaluation process but rather, directs attention towards some of the informational inputs and assumptions which merit clarification and discussion.

The electrochemistry of leaching gold with thiosulphate has been studied systematically by using electrochemical techniques. Results show that the current peak of anodic dissolution of gold occurs at about 50 mV(SCE) and there is passivation in the polarisation curve in the thiosulphate solution in the absence of ammonia. Ammonia markedly improves the anodic dissolution rate of gold and reduces the passivation as well as making the current peak shift negatively. Results also show that there is no current peak for a cathodic process in the range of 0 -900 mV(SCE) in the thiosulphate solution in the presence of oxygen but absence of cupric ions and ammonia. In the solution containing 0. 1 mol/L cupric-ammonia ions, the peak occurs at about -400 mV (SCE) and the cathodic process is characteristic of a catalytic reaction. Oxygen presents a predominate effect on the cathodic process. Based on the electrochemical investigation, the following mechanism of leaching gold with ammoniacal thiosulphate has been proposed. Ammonia reacts primarily with gold ions on th anodic surface of gold and the formed A (NH3)2+ rea~s then with S2O 3 in solution to form the stabler Au(S203) 2 . Cu (NHS) 4 gains electrons on the cathodic surface and is reduced to CU(N) ? which is then oxidised by oxygen and regenerated into Cu(NH3) 4 after entering the solution.

When iron ore is crushed and split into lump and fines components, there are systematic differences between the lump and fines grades. Generally the lump product is richer in iron and lower in the other minerals, compared to the fines product. The grade differences between lump and fines, together with the lump percentage, are referred to as the ælump algorithmÆ. Mine estimates of grade, based on exploration or blasthole drilling, relate to head grade. The ælump algorithmÆ predicts lump and fines product grades from the head grade. This knowledge is important when developing mine plans. Different ore types can be expected to have systematically different lump algorithms. Previously, lump algorithms for specific ore types have been estimated by running the crusher with a single ore type over a sample period. This method is costly, interferes with production, and yields results of limited statistical power. It has been found that weighted-least-squares (WLS) multiple regression can be used to ascribe lump algorithms to different ore types, provided sample periods have sufficiently varied ore type mixes. This study discusses the method and its application to the analysis of Mining Area C crusher production records to estimate the separate lump algorithms, which could be applied to the different ore types. The analysis has enabled the set up of lump algorithms in the production system, to improve the grade control of lump and fines product. Some other relevant applications of the WLS multiple regression approach are also considered.

In cut-and-break rock excavation use is made of the fact that breaking rock in tension towards a free face requires a specific energy of excavation which is small in comparison with that required for rock excavation using conventional tools operating by a process of indentation of the rock.The process of cut-and-break excavation comprises firstly a cutting step in which a groove is cut into the rock surface, followed by a breaking phase in which a tool is inserted into the cut in order to break the rock adjacent to the cut.

In 2015, Ernst and Young (EY) ranked socio-political license to operate (SPLTO) as the fifth greatest challenge to the mining sector (EY, 2015). The EY report asserts that SPLTO will continue to present a risk to the mining sector in the context of ‘increased activism, digitally connected stakeholders and politicians who need to respond to general consensus’. While there is no consensus on a definition, SPLTO is commonly regarded as the ongoing acceptance or approval of an operation by affected stakeholders (Moffat and Zhang, 2014; Thomson and Joyce, 2008) as well as those stakeholders that can affect the operation (Graafland, 2002). Warhurst (2001) relates the process of stakeholders granting SPLTO to the establishment of meaningful partnerships between operations, communities and government based on a variety of factors that build trust between stakeholders.From these accounts, we can see that understanding stakeholder attitudes about company performance and impacts on stakeholders directly affected by an operation are important in any attempts to measure SPLTO. Understanding the level of acceptance of an operation within these stakeholders provides a good proxy or outcome measure of SPLTO. Moreover, trust seems to be a central variable in the translation of these experiences of an operation into acceptance. What the mine or company does, its behaviour, degrades or builds trust with stakeholders, and this then affects acceptance (Moffat and Zhang, 2014).In addition, a strong emphasis is placed on the nature of the relationship between companies and stakeholders as influenced by inter-group interactions. It is not just what companies do well or poorly with respect to environmental impacts, for example, that will determine trust and acceptance, but how the company relates to its stakeholders at personal and group levels.These relationships between communities of stakeholders and extractive companies are dynamic. Brown and Fraser (2006) recognised the importance of industry being able to respond to the changing nature of societal approval and acceptance, arguing that ‘business must have regard for evolving social attitudes and expectations if it is to maintain its ‘social licence’’.This paper will describe a series of five pilot projects conducted by CSIRO with Anglo American in Australia and South Africa to generate a real-time understanding of SPLTO to guide more reflexive and effective social performance strategies.CITATION:Moffat, K, Boughen, N, Brooks, L and Zhang, A, 2016. Bauxite mining on Cape York Peninsula (CYP) commenced in the early 1960s in the region surrounding the town of Weipa. Rio Tinto Alcan (RTA) operates its bauxite mines on the homelands of 11 Indigenous Traditional Owner groups. The mining activity currently operates under three Aboriginal Agreements including an Indigenous Land Use Agreement – the Western Cape Communities Coexistence Agreement (WCCCA) – which provides RTA with access to the land in return for a range of benefits to the Traditional Owners, including employment, training, royalty payments and future relinquishment of the land (Klimenko and Evans, 2009). Despite reports of some ‘good progress’ in meeting the terms of the WCCCA (Klimenko and Evans, 2009, p 5), many of the region’s Traditional Owners remain dissatisfied. The world is getting flatter through internet, mobile phone technology, relatively low cost travel, massive outsourcing of manufacturing to China and the transfer of company backroom operations to India. In the iron and steel industry, however, things will remain relatively the same with slow gradual improvements in technology; only the geographic location of plants may change over time. Or will it? The blast furnace smelting process has remained largely unchanged since 1828 when James Neilson came up with the idea of preheated air being delivered to the tuyeres. Likewise, oxygen steelmaking that takes molten iron from such blast furnaces has remained conceptually unchanged since Sir Henry Bessemer invented an air-based system in 1856. These two processes are the core of integrated steel mills that we know today. Typically such mills consist of coke ovens, sinter plant, blast furnace, oxygen steelmaking, continuous caster, rolling mills and metal coating lines. In the intervening 150 years the only real disruptive technology to the integrated steel mill has been the minimill. Based on the use of the electric arc furnace (EAF), in conjunction with a continuous caster and rolling mill, the term minimill is used because steel products are produced at down to one-tenth the scale required for economic operation of an integrated mill, with the EAF producing molten steel using largely scrap steel as its feed, as against transforming coal to coke (coke ovens), iron ore, coke and limestone into molten iron (blast furnace) and molten iron to steel (oxygen steelmaking). There are, however, a number of technologies in development that may cause a paradigm shift in the way steel products are produced and perhaps push the evolution of the minimill as a disruptive technology. Two examples are direct iron smelting, where iron is produced in a matter of seconds by injection of ironmaking feed materials into a molten bath, and thin strip casting, where molten steel is cast into 2 mm strip or less, in similar time. Both have Australian connections. A leading iron smelting technology is the HIsmelt« process, which has its first commercial application at Kwinana, Western Australia, where a joint venture of international parties, consisting of Rio Tinto and the Nucor, Mitsubishi and Shougang corporations, are in the stage of ramping up commercial production. The leading strip casting technology is the Castrip« process that arose from development work done by then BHP Steel, with IHI of Japan, at Port Kembla, New South Wales in the 1990s. Nucor followed this work up, building the first commercial plant for the technology at its Crawfordsville site in Indiana in 2001 and has recently announced an intention to build a second plant in the USA. While both technologies are only into the early stages of commercialisation they are likely to change the face of iron and steelmaking as we know it over the next 20 years. This paper elaborates on the technology of the two processes, why they could change the face of the iron and steel industry forever, what might drive the rapid change and what the changes may look like.

An intermediate scale (8 m + 8 m + 5 m high) constructed waste rock pile experiment was built upon a contiguous grid of 16 gravity drainage lysimeters to investigate the flow of water in unsaturated waste rock. Average net infiltration to the uncovered waste rock pile is 55 per cent of precipitation. Large rainfall events have net infiltration of 55 per cent to 85 per cent. Net infiltration estimates range from 23 to 120 per cent of precipitation between lysimeters. Small-scale lysimeters of less than 4 m2 area are shown to be poor predictors of net infiltration for uncovered waste rock. The appropriate size for lysimeters increases with increasing flow rate. The residence time distribution has an estimated median value of 3.0 to 3.9 years under average infiltration conditions. Water flows within the fine grained matrix, within larger pores (macropores), and in matrix free areas of the pile. In situ tracer concentrations vary between pore sizes, and between spatially distinct areas of the pile, indicating water geochemistry may also be variable. Water samples collected from in situ soil water samplers are dominated by the most mobile water fractions. In situ measurements of water content and matric suction are compared to the measured outflow. The data indicate the focusing of flow in spatially distinct areas can make in situ instrumentation a poor (non-conservative) predictor of volumetric water flow.

Civil engineering infrastructures are often subjected to different types of natural and mechanical activities. These influences may result in serviceability or even in stability of structures due to material deformations, increased water content within the materials used or the formation of internal or adjacent cavities that may threaten the infrastructure. Construction practices can lead to development of such defects in the form of cavities. In civil engineering it is crucial to detect these variations in material properties and to detect the presence of defects. However, as they are often hidden from view, these attributes may be difficult or impossible to target with traditional testing methods. For these reasons rapid geophysical methods, such as ground penetrating radar (GPR), are increasingly being used. At the University of Queensland (UQ) GPR is used for detection of voids and cavities which have been caused by an over excavation of the earth pressure balance machine (EPB) operating in a closed mode.A variety of numerical simulations using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) methods and preliminary experiments have been carried out in order to specify information about the nature, type, size, location and other characteristics of targets to be detected by GPR. In doing this the difficulty of interpreting GPR data, which is mainly due to the complexity of the factors involved in multiple possible solutions of the observed features, can be overcome.

This work investigates some suggested methods for blast vibration monitoring on a hard surface based on 53 tests on a vibration exciter. Errors in the measurement attributable to coupling have been described as function of frequency by the rock-to-mount (or coupling) transmissibility, ie ratio of the velocity of the vibration sensor mount to the velocity of the rock motion. Transmissibility has been measured from 2 to 200 Hz, at two vibration levels (5 and 20 mm/s), in four seismographs. Attachment methods with an anchor, thermal adhesive and gypsum plaster allow stiff rock-to-mount coupling. They ensure accurate measurements (errors below 0.3 dB) for frequencies commonly found in blasting (below 100 Hz) irrespective of the mount characteristics and the vibration level. Free laid mounts and sandbagged vibration sensors lead generally to a poor, weak coupling. Errors are non-linear errors with the input velocity, ie the operating frequency window narrows as the velocity of the ground increases. Free mounts follow ground motion acceptably well (error up to 0.4 dB) at both vibration levels and frequencies below 15 Hz. At higher frequencies, free mounts lead to the largest distortions with expected errors ranging from 0.8 to 6.6 dB. Sandbagging limits the expected errors below 1.3 dB, but it does not prevent large errors that can be up to 4.5 dB. This paper describes work conducted as part of an overall research project that aims to identify current and emerging trends in the development of automation and remote mining technologies, and to provide an operator-centred perspective to the design and deployment of such systems. More specifically, this paper outlines a research and development process being constructed to examine the issues of the human skills and capabilities required to operate or maintain automated/remote controlled mobile mining equipment. A human factors approach presented here, where the focus is upon designing equipment interfaces to fit operators, rather than purely designing and deploying the equipment based on a technology-centred approach. However, the importance of training to help develop the required skills and capabilities is also emphasised.The work built on a full review of the literature about the effects of automation in mining and elsewhere, extensive interviews with different stakeholders in mining automation and recognised best practice regarding designing for the human element in automated systems. The human element research and development process proposed is in four stages, ranging from understanding the tasks involved in both manual and automated equipment operation through to user trials to ensure that the automated systems are acceptable to operators and are fit for purpose.It is outside the scope of the current paper to present the full data collection described by this four stage process, but an overview of what will be collected is presented. As such, this paper focuses on the broad methods being developed, rather than the specific results to be obtained. The ultimate objective is to apply a broad ‘technology assessment’ approach to the design, deployment and evaluation of automated mining technologies, in particular by considering the user-centred design implications of these technologies.

A block model of the orebody is used to plan a mine. The first requirement is to identify ore to be extracted, discarding waste, so as to meet target grade, generally in multiple analytes. Commonly, cut-off values are set for each analyte, so as to distinguish ore from waste. It will be shown that, if more than one analyte is important, this procedure is wasteful of ore and a composite cut-off function is preferable.A second requirement is to sequence the ore extraction so that the variability in ore grade is controlled: failure to do so will result either in low-quality ore being marketed, or excessive re-handling being required to blend the ore to reduce the grade variability.A third requirement is that the extraction sequence should be such as to control the amount of equipment movement required, enhancing the equipment productivity.The overall objective, to optimise the Net Present Value (NPV) of the mined ore, is simply stated but complex in realisation, since so many factors, such as target grade, grade variability, equipment choice, equipment movement, and downstream blending all have alternatives which can be traded off against each other, and all of which contribute to the costs and benefits making up the total NPV.There exist commercial packages for ore selection and mine planning. However, they are often of a ‘black box’ nature, and users are sometimes not fully aware of the criteria being applied. In particular, the treatment of quality as a multidimensional vector may be problematic. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of the issues involved and to suggest an alternative set of approaches, which should complement existing commercial treatments.The discussion will be illustrated specifically by reference to the mining of iron ore, but the issues are relevant to a wide variety of mining situations

The moisture content of iron ore during handling can range from the dust extinction moisture at the point of arrival at the port to the transportable moisture limit at the point of loading ships for maritime transport. Moisture content and ore composition, specifically fines content, have a large influence on ore flowability. Typically, elevated moisture can result in bottlenecks, downtime and lost productivity due to build-up, conveyor carry-back and blockages, increasing maintenance costs. On the other hand, low moisture can result in increased dust emissions influencing the environmental footprint and product losses. Managing the use of water across the supply chain is therefore critical for service life of equipment, productivity, but also has environmental and social impacts, affecting the social license to operate. Previously, experiments have shown that oscillations induced in iron ore during handling and transport can result in movement of moisture through the ore. This kind of moisture migration depends on the nature of these oscillations, such as the undulation of idlers during conveying, the inherent ore properties and the initial moisture content. Moisture has been observed to move either upwards and/or towards the bottom of the burden. These effects can be exploited to remove excess water from the ore influencing handleability and operation, however, the actual mechanisms of moisture migration are currently poorly understood. The study presented herein involves the use of simulation to examine moisture and ore interactions. Simulations using discrete element method (DEM) and coupled with smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) are implemented to investigate the behaviour of moisture in wet ore in the presence of oscillation. This is conducted at a fundamental level first using glass beads and water which is then compared to iron ore at high moisture content. The results of the modelling are discussed in view of experiments conducted.

Prior to the commencement of mining, the acid rock drainage (ARD) potential of the waste rock to be produced by an open cut mining operation is assessed by a variety of techniques carried out on drill-hole samples. These include, among others, acid base accounting (ABA), net acid generation (NAG) testing, and kinetic testing. Based on the results obtained, a strategy for the identification, separation and selective placement of waste rock having different potentials to form ARD is developed. During the course of mining, the waste rock classification scheme will be re-assessed periodically to confirm that it is appropriate. This re-evaluation may result in a change in classification scheme, and waste rock dump samples may be obtained for ARD assay purposes to confirm the appropriateness of the revised scheme. The paper describes the evolution over time of the scheme used to classify waste rock at a major open pit gold operation in New South Wales, Australia, including the development of a hydrological model. To confirm the appropriateness of the revised scheme, ARD assay testing was carried out on drill-hole samples collected from dumps having different ARD potential designations, including Non-Acid Forming (NAF), Potentially Acid Forming (PAF), and Low Grade Ore stockpiles. The results of the ARD assay testing and water quality monitoring confirmed the appropriateness of the ARD potential designations and the revised classification scheme, which has been adopted.

This paper is concerned with two case histories of wastewater quality management in underground coal mines in the Illawarra region. The first investigation briefly presents an analysis of mine water discharge having an extremely high concentration of suspended solids and consistently high barium concentrations, averaging, 14.4 mg/I Barium, over the sampling period. A laboratory study of chemical precipitation processes has indicated that about 91% of barium could be removed by using ferric sulphate and lime. On the basis of the information obtained from the environmental audit process an alternative water treatment and reuse system incorporating 51% reduction in the water consumption with 32% less off-site discharge has been suggested (Thomas, 1995).The second case history is concerned with the storm water management at a mine situated in the Illawarra escarpment where only 20% of the wastewater generated in the colliery is discharged off-site. Computer modelling of the storm water system showed that 75% of the clean runoff becomes contaminated through poor management practices and causes the process wastewater treatment system to fail in wet weather. Suggested improvements include relatively simple alteration to the coal wash filtration dams which are expected to reduce the periods of inefficient operation of these dams by 95%. The use of storm water diversion channels and detention basins can reduce the overflow volumes by 70 - 100 % for a ten year ARI (Average Recurrence Interval) storm event (Wingrove 1996).

Anglo American Metallurgical Coal (AAMC) manages five open cut coal mines in Queensland and New South Wales, producing approximately 30 million tonnes per annum. The size and complexity of these mines require efforts by a large and diverse number of personnel to minimise adverse geotechnical events from occurring. To achieve this, the AAMC coal mines in Australia are developing a concept of managing the geotechnical risks associated with open cut coal mines. The overall system utilises a combination of internal training, a management system (operational management systems) and standards, numerical modelling, monitoring, inspections and audits. The development of the standards as well as training and mentoring of exploration personnel, geotechnical engineers, engineering geologists and mining engineers with an interest in the geotechnical aspects of mining, training of the production workforce, mentoring and training of the technical staff create the basis for achieving a pro-active rather than a reactive system. Audits are used to assure that personnel are maintaining the standards and to facilitate cross-mine leanings so that best practices are developed across all sites.

This paper details the approach adopted to upgrade the current metallurgical facilities at both the Driefontein and Kloof Gold Mines in the Republic of South Africa. Goldfields Ltd operates eight metallurgical plants within South Africa of which three have recently been upgraded to replace the older technology previously installed, with modern equipment. This upgrade was undertaken with a view to improving extraction efficiencies and to reduce operating costs. The upgrade was undertaken in a phased approach with the first phase focused on the replacement of the filtration/zinc precipitation processes with modern pumpcell carbon-in-pulp technology. Included in this upgrade phase was the installation of an automated hands-free electrowinning cell, which represents the first commercial application of its kind in the industry. The second phase of the upgrade entailed replacement of the multiple comminution stages previously installed with large SAG and SAG/Ball mill combinations. Due to the rapid return on these projects, a fast-track approach was adopted which necessitated the purchase of available good conditioned second-hand mills from both within South Africa as well as in Australia. Goldfields Ltd is a large mining house with gold mining operations in South Africa, Australia and Ghana. A well advanced PGM exploration project is underway in Finland- Arctic Platinum.

Approximately 2.4 million ounces of gold and 11.3 million ounces of silver have been produced from the Umuna Lode by Misima Mines Pty Limited between June 1989 and the end of Decemeber 1996. Reserves remaining at the end of December were 32.1 million tonnes at 1.0 gram per tonne gold and 9.7 grams per tonne silver. To attain precious metal production of this volume, an estimated K60,000,000 (1996 Kina) was spent on exploration alone. from the 1940s to the present day. Exploration expenditure for the 1996 calendar year was approximately K4,400,000. With such a large investment in exploration, large quantities of data were generated and stored in various forms. To make best use of this data, it was necessary to organise and systematically store this data in a form compatible with a modern Geographical Information System (GIS). The Umuna Lode on Misima Island is a low sulphidation gold- silver deposit dated at 3.5 ¦ 0.2 Ma. The deposit is controlled by the 50 to 100 metre wide Umuna Fault- a moderate dipping, brecciated clay- chlorite- carbonate altered, normal fault zone. There is approximately 230 metres of mostly dip slip offset on this fault, which is measurable by the offset of the Cretaceous schist, marble and greenstone host sequence. Late Miocene microdiorite spatially related to the Umuna Lode does not appear to be genetically related to the gold- silver mineralisation. GIS was introduced to Misima at the end of 1995 and until recently has been mostly used for data storage and retrieval, the over- laying of various data sets to assist in targeting prospective areas, and as a drafting tool. The use of data-driven, predictive data analysis is the most recent effort in maximising the use of the extensive Misima database. By characterising the key controls and properties of the Umuna- type mineralisation, a Weights of Evidence, data-driven analysis produced a prospectivity map of Misima Island. The purpose of this map was to identify prospective areas yet to be explored and to assess the effectiveness of exploration to date.
