Geophysical methods are useful non-invasive means of collecting subsurface information on the environmental impacts of resource developments. Techniques such as seismic refraction, ground probing radar and magnetics are well established tools for environmental studies of waste disposal sites. Repeat resistivity surveys, gravity surveys, and infrared or multispectral remote sensing hold great promise for monitoring environmental changes. Examples from New Zealand include geothermal field monitoring, which may involve the use of geophysics for .detecting changes of surface thermal activity, hydrothermal eruptions, induced earthquakes, contamination or depletion of shallow groundwater, and subsurface fluid recharge. Other examples include resistivity monitoring of contained effluent disposal ponds, tailings dams and landfills. Experience has shown that care is necessary to identify the natural variability of the parameter measured before drawing conclusions regarding an observed change.

The use of solid state detector and radioisotope x-ray source for x-ray fluorescence analysis is illustrated by analysis for iron, copper, zinc, tin, and lead in about 700 samples taken from Australian mineral process streams. Limits of detection based on counting statistics (3 standard deviations) range from 0·001 to 0·004 per cent by weight element. The analysis accuracy was usualIy between 2 to 10 per cent (rms) of the mean element concentration and was determined by comparison with assays supplied by mineral companies. In most cases the main cause of error appears to be due to this assay and not the x-ray fluorescence technique.Some potential fields of application of solid state detector and radioisotope x-ray source for analyses in the mineral industry are indicated.

This paper describes the new legislative regime that will apply to the regulation of the minerals industry in New Zealand. The reform of New ZealandÆs minerals legislation was initiated in January 1988 when the Minister for the Environment, Rt Hon Geoffrey Palmer, announced the Governments intention to review all the major laws governing New ZealandÆs resources. The Resource Management Bill is scheduled for introduction to the House in December 1989 and its date of enactment is scheduled for June 1990. With some matters still to be determined (at the time of writing), this paper cannot be a definitive review and description of the new legislation, it is instead an attempt to outline the major features of the Bill, to date, that are seen as important to the mining industry.

The paper addresses certain mining provisions of the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 and the development of Mining agreements negotiated pursuant to Section 43 of the Act. Difficulties for miners and Land Councils alike arising out of the operation of the Land Rights Act will be discussed. Possible scenarios for the resolution of these difficulties will be proposed.

A detailed study of the capital investment and production cost for copper electrowinning plants shows that significant savings in both can be achieved by increasing the current density. From the economic analysis it is determined that the optimum current density which will result in lowest capital investment and lowest operating cost is between 60 A/sq. ft. and 70 A/sq. ft., or at least three times as high as the Conventionally employed current density. The specific investment, expressed as $/ton-year, is found to be a function of both the current density and plant capacity and has a minimum value at the optimum current density. Empirical equations are developed for the purpose of estimating the capital investment and operating cost for plants of any production capacity operating at any current density.

In Victoria’s onshore Gippsland Basin, geology is driving brown coal developments, and geologists are key decision-makers. Prompted by volatile energy prices and the likelihood of a carbon constrained future, significant work has been carried out on the next generation of technologies to be applied to this giant resource. These include new-generation gasification technologies, coal conversion processes yielding products as diverse as diesel and fertiliser, drying technologies producing thermal and metallurgical coals and in situ conversion processes. However, coals aren’t coals, and brown coal available for new projects will have different quality parameters and mining economics from that currently mined.New projects are likely to be developed on coals with moisture contents averaging 60 per cent and corresponding low energy values. Whilst ash values will be low, averaging just 5 per cent (dry basis), this will at times approach 10 per cent, which is a level that would challenge the installed-generation technologies. Sulfur values will average 0.4 per cent (dry basis), but at times exceed 0.6 per cent, requiring technologies that address the potential for sulfur dioxide emissions. Whilst localised high levels of the fluxes iron (>1 per cent dry basis) and sodium (>0.3 per cent dry basis) would increase fouling of installed technologies, they may be suitable for selected next-generation technologies.Project viability for this next generation of technologies will be strongly influenced by mining cost, and geologists are playing a role in identifying higher-value coal. At its simplest, this is being achieved for open cut mines through regional, vertical strip ratio assessments, which are considered a first-order proxy for mining cost. Follow up assessments are incorporating mining and processing cost, coal quality penalties and product revenues. At a regional scale, it is informing the likely location and relative timing of future mine developments, as well as thinking around rehabilitation strategies, infrastructure and land-use planning.For deeper coal, factors like macro permeability, the ability to isolate seams from aquifers, groundwater chemistry, pressure temperature conditions, connection with groundwater recharge and in situ biota are being used as vectors to in situ coal conversion opportunities.Matching coal to the next generation of technologies has benefited from regional-scale geological studies of coal quality and mining economics, and has benefited from early engagement between geologists, technology developers and project proponents.CITATION:Maher, S and Love, G, 2014. Weinberg, born and educated in Germany, worked in'the American West for 10 years as a mining engineer and metallurgist. He was the first head of the Queensland Smelting Co. and from 1889 through 1915 was a prominent mining figure in Queensland. He was a competent manager at Aldershot, Dapto, and Chillagoe, but always lacked huge ore deposits for his smelters.

Automatic sampling and weighing of copper sulphide concentrate produced on Bougainville Island (PNG) is described. Contained metal weights gave satisfactory agreement with buyer's results after the introduction of polyethylene lined sealed aluminium foil bags for transport and storage of assay samples. Paper bags used previously for this purpose permitted oxidation of the sulphide concentrate and thus caused lower assay values.

A highly effective binder for iron ore pellet making is obtainable from bituminous materials produced in the hightemperature cracking of crude oils. Recent exploration has established depos its of nickel sulphide in several areas of Western Australia. To assist in their develop- ment Amdel has investigated the beneficiation of many samples from these deposits and has estab- lished flowsheets for the recovery of nickel values by flotation. Metallurgical data are presented for the samples according to four factors which were encountered in their respective treatments.

The efficiency of operation for each cell is,discussed in terms of the electrochemistry of (a) gold deposition, and (b) packed bed electrodes. On the first of July, 2012, the Australian GovernmentÆs Clean Energy Act commenced. From this point, a price of $23/t of CO2-e will apply to facilities that trip the liability threshold. This first part of this paper concentrates on the mechanics of the Clean Energy Future legislation and how it will be applied to the mining and mineral processing industry.The second part of this paper contains analysis of the data presented for typical mine operations. Methodologies for constructing a carbon strategy are also presented. This will entail determining what the objectives of the carbon strategy are, and defining what the strategic priorities for a business should be. An action plan to address the risks identified from the Clean Energy Act is also developed as part of the strategy.Details such as the advantages and disadvantages of opting into the carbon price scheme for liquid fuels are shown. Classification of mineral resource estimates is one of the most important responsibilities of the Competent Person. In recent years, classification decisions have been driven more by the detailed block-by-block attributes generated by the now widely applied geostatistical estimation methods, and less by a general geological overview. This is increasingly resulting in æspotted dogÆ outputs, in which blocks of Inferred Resources or unclassified material separate blocks of Measured and/or Indicated Resources, or individual drill holes are surrounded by annuli of Measured and Indicated Resource blocks. Not only are such outputs potentially misleading, since they ignore fundamentals such as continuity of geology and mineralisation between drill holes and the imprecise nature of resource estimation, they can also cause substantial problems for engineers undertaking mine designs and estimating ore reserves, particularly for underground mines. Competent Persons for mineral resources must keep in mind the purpose of their work, and should use their experience and judgement to avoid or smooth out æspotted dogÆ classifications, providing a result commensurate with the level of geological and resource estimation confidence. For their part, ore reserve Competent Persons must understand the resource estimation and classification process, and should question resource classifications that are not consistent with the level of geological and resource estimation confidence.

The optimisation of an open pit mine can be broadly split into two stages, the first being the ultimate pit optimisation (and subsequent stage designs), and the second being schedule optimisation. Macroeconomic uncertainty clearly impacts on both however interrelationships do also exist. Generally, the opportunity exists for the ultimate pit to be revised during each planning cycle, however when this reprieve is removed the uncertainty for the underlying business increases. As one example, the introduction of an in-pit waste dump can be seen to significantly limit the option to revise the ultimate pit. When in this situation there are two potential risks that present: (i) the long-term price used for the ultimate pit selection is optimistic, and too large of a pit is selected resulting in waste being mined which uncovers material not of a significant value to deliver a profit; (ii) the long-term price used for the ultimate pit selection is pessimistic, too small of an ultimate pit is selected, and ore of realisable economic value left behind. Martabe gold and silver mine is operated by PT Agincourt Resources (PTAR) and is situated in northern Sumatra and comprises several deposits in steep terrain, and in a tropical climate, that are required to be developed in the optimal sequence for the best possible Net Present Value (NPV) return on the project. In addition, the waste rock from excavations and tailings from processing is a by-product to be scheduled and used for a number of purposes identified as part of life-of-mine planning. These uses include construction of the current integrated tailings storage facility (TSF) as well as future engineering construction and waste disposal projects which includes plans for a program of in-pit backfilling. These plans need to be aligned to ensure the waste rock and tailings can be contained relative to the production rate. Given that the site will have multiple open pit voids upon cessation of mining activities opportunities for integration of in-pit disposal of mine waste have now been assessed with technical studies to review the practicality of the approach with respect to operational challenges and conformance with closure planning requirements. This includes assessment of disposal of waste rock, tailings (including consideration of filtered tailings) and co-disposal of waste rock and filtered tailings.

Selective leach analytical techniques applied to surface geochemical samples in the search for deeply buried mineral resources gained popularity in the late 1990s. Several commercial assay laboratories introduced their own selective leach methods, adding to the few established commercial methods at that time. Many of these laboratories promoted their methods with orientation data showing favorable responses to both precious and base metal mineralisation, concealed beneath extensive thicknesses of overburden. However, many explorationists remain confused about the utility of these geochemical methods. This confusion is due primarily to the lack of objective orientation surveys over significant mineralisation, comparing all commercially available selective leach methods and to the lack of a creditable theory explaining the formation of these selective leach anomalies. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. An orientation survey was designed to fill the first void û an objective survey over significant mineralisation. With the help of 17 mining companies and assay laboratories, an orientation survey was conducted over five significant covered gold deposits in Nevada, USA , representing over ten million ounces of gold. Hopefully the results of this survey will help provide fuel for those working on the second void û a theory to adequately explain the formation of these selective leach anomalies.

A new process is described which allows for direct recovery of base and precious metals (Au and PGMÆs) from sulphide concentrates or other feedstocks. The process was developed initially for application to ores or concentrates that are too low-grade for economic treatment by the conventional smelting and matte leaching process (for PGMÆs). It is now believed that the process may be widely applicable to a variety of materials including PGM concentrates containing high amounts of chromium or magnesium. Operating conditions have been identified under which gold, the PGMÆs and the base metals dissolve simultaneously in a pressure leaching autoclave. The product of this leaching process can then be treated by one of several flowsheets, of which the preferred will likely involve solid/liquid separation, followed by precipitation (or adsorption on activated carbon) of gold and the PGMÆs, followed by copper solvent extraction/electrowinning. Depending on the concentrations of nickel and cobalt, the copper raffinate would either be partially recycled to the autoclave to allow Ni/Co concentrations to build up, or it would proceed directly to a Ni/Co refinery. This paper deals with the pressure leaching process and the recovery of gold and the PGMÆs from the pressure leach product.

Blast furnace slags which fall into the quaternary system SiO2 - A1203 - MgO - CaO have latent hydraulic properties which depend on the degree of vitrification. When the oxides com- bine to form Calcium Silicate Hydrates and other products of hydration the bonds between elements are at a lower energy level than those which exist in the glassy state. Transition from the glassy state to the crystalline state is thermo- dynamically favoured and, in the context of this paper, such slags possess internal energy. Manufacture of Portland cement is respon- sible for about 3.6 per cent of total industrial energy consumption in Canada. Pyroprocessing accounts for about 83 per cent of this figure or 3 per cent of the total. The processing of blast furnace slag to a condition in which it can be used as a partial substitute for Portland cement requires no pyroprocessing and, on average, only about 11 per cent of the energy needed for Portland cement. In North America the benefits of slag as a cementitious materials have been obscured by other considerations, the most important being commercial strategy. This situation has under- gone radical change as a result of the rising cost of energy, and government pressures to conserve energy.
