Research conducted into backfill drainage at Mount Isa Mines since 1992 is described. Piping in draining backfilled stopes has been the primary cause of bulkhead failures and emphasis is placed on research into the piping mechanism. Laboratory and in situ tests aimed at understanding the piping mechanism have been conducted and the results are presented. A case history of piping in a draining bench stope fill mass is described and a technique for reducing the potential for bulkhead failures in bench stopes is presented. Hydraulic fill is produced by standard cycloning of tailings and the overflow (reject material) is sent to thickeners prior to placement in the tailings dams. Research into the partial introduction of thickener underflow into the backfill system and its influence on backfill drainage is also described.

Silver and gold bearing ore from the Troy Resources NL Casposo Gold-Silver Project, located within the San Juan Province of Argentina contains a complex mix of gold, silver, electrum and silver sulphides in the ore. Casposo is a typical low sulphidation epithermal style gold–silver deposit where mineralisation is hosted within rhyolite – andesite flows and breccias. Veins are typically banded quartz–chalcedony colloform - crustiform banded with quartz - carbonate infill. Mineralisation is associated with an assemblage consisting of quartz, chalcedony, adularia, calcite, illite, sericite and trace sulphides. Gold and silver occur as electrum, native silver, sulfosalts and silver sulphides. This paper presents a case study that describes the process selection, development and engineering of a tailored process plant for the recovery of gold and silver from this ore.The original feasibility study, modelling, metallurgical testwork and engineering studies are outlined. The final flowsheet was based on minimising capital cost, operability, recovery and minimising technical risk.The process flowsheet uses the traditional Merrill Crowe route because of the high silver to gold ratio in the feed and achieves maximum gold and silver recovery while providing a common facility for future ore body treatment.

One of the earliest and continuing challenges in driving sustainable development in large scale resource industry projects is around the issue of assessment û how do you measure the sustainability of a mineral operation? One of the key road blocks when confronted with this challenge is the temptation of technical folks to reach for a definition of sustainability or sustainable development. But definitions, by definition, have boundaries and limitations that serve to constrain thinking û they limit the thinking of what we can achieve with sustainability (it also acts as a barrier that constrains innovation). Rather than seeking definitions, better understanding of the core perspectives around sustainability and their application to the minerals industry provides a much more powerful platform from which to conduct assessments. But it is only when these perspectives are combined with the right framework and supporting techniques that the complex becomes doable. With the support of the perspectives and the framework, various assessment and measurement methodologies can be used; the challenge is communicating to stakeholders the sustainability character of the project in ways that are meaningful and to which people can connect. Assessment is not about finding the best or most accurate methods that fulfil strictly academic and possibly abstract requirements. The challenge is to help people understand what the impacts are, and what the value contributions will be, in a format and language that make sense in their world-view.

In 2009, Peter Munro and Peter Tilyard examined the “human capital” in the mineral processing sector in a paper entitled Back to the Future (Munro and Tilyard, 2009). One of their major concerns was a general decline in technical skills and process knowledge, exacerbated by lack of appreciation of the impact this can have on process plant performance and, ultimately, profitability or sustainability of the industry. There are many reasons for this decline, not least of which are the work schedules of today’s metallurgists which have a very different balance between technical and non-technical responsibility than those in the past. However, a shift towards a more technical focus has potential to deliver a range of benefits for industry at large and for the individuals in it This paper discusses some options for development of core metallurgical and process engineering skills that can be used by graduates, employers and training providers.Key skills are identified and mapped against available opportunities for development, such as existing graduate programs, on-the job training and external courses. The authors also review a number of past and present high-quality graduate development programs, including the graduate development program in place at Mount Isa Mines in the 1980s and the Anglo Platinum Graduate Development Program (AGDP) currently operating in South Africa.

The Work Health and Safety Act 2020 (WA) (WHS Act; DMIRS, 2020) and associated Work Health and Safety (Mines) Regulations 2022 (WA) (WHS Regulations; DMIRS, 2022), supporting guidance materials and other laws, such as the Sex Discrimination Act 1984 (Cth) (SD Act), have imposed new duties on every person or business conducting an undertaking (PCBU) in Western Australia, including those operating in the mining industry. These laws and associated guidance materials combine to require owners, operators and contractors to discharge positive duties and better report and manage psychosocial hazards in the workplace. For mine operators, there is a positive duty to not only identify and eliminate hazards relating to psychological harm, sexual harassment and gendered violence at work, but to also report incidents to the safety regulator that could result in serious harm, even while internal and police investigations are ongoing. Traditional mines safety teams are navigating the evolving frontier of psychological and gendered safety as the duties relating to psychosocial safety and sexual harassment at work continue to expand. This paper will review the legal obligations on PCBUs to conduct internal investigations into critical psychosocial incidents and gendered violence on mines, whilst balancing the demands and sensitivities of investigations by the safety regulator and police. There are emerging approaches to safety investigations that can aid PCBUs in managing their investigations of psychosocial incidents and gendered violence, including trauma-informed investigation techniques, collaboration with psychological experts and the use of limited legal privilege. Well managed and sensitive investigations can foster trust amongst workers, result in improved incident reporting by workers and lead to enhanced safety outcomes for the resources industry whilst preserving the legal positions of involved PCBUs. Specifically traversing the new duty to consult, cooperate and coordinate, this practical session will arm mine managers, safety professionals and human resources professionals, from mine operators and mining contractors alike, with tools and processes to bring to safety investigations, particularly on residential mine sites.

The operations and project environments are very different, but overlap in many areas. The development of mineral processing projects is goal oriented, is schedule focused and is a contractual environment. The operating environment for a mineral processing plant is oriented around longer-term commitments, focused on delivery against budget expectations, and an environment heavily influenced by long-term personal relationships, community relationships, and people issues.Further contrast is evident in the way expenditure is managed. Projects commit large amounts of money quickly to meet schedule-based objectives. Operations manage expenditure to minimise operating costs and are able to, or are forced to delay decisions on large expenditures. However, these two environments need to come together in many ways, ranging from greenfields plant handover to a new operations and maintenance crew, to day to day interaction and management of brownfields projects, often in close proximity.This paper considers the different perspectives people bring to projects and early operations, including the advantages and disadvantages of æoperationsÆ input to a project and models for managing value adding during project development, implementation and debottlenecking.CITATION:Lane, G and Clements, B, 2012. "Most of VictoriaÆs rivers and aquifers are already fully allocated or reaching full allocation. In regions without a well-established water market, access to water entitlements to facilitate new development is limited. In areas with established water markets, mine developers face an undue cost burden in circumstances where they are only planning to consume a fraction of the water entitlements that they purchase. The challenge for water managers is to ensure protection of water resources and other water users without creating an unnecessary disincentive for those types of developments that return most of the water that they take from water sources. The opportunity for development of a mine is explicitly linked to a particular location and must be developed where a resource is located or it cannot be exploited at all. Regulatory arrangements that facilitate development may have a positive impact on economic development, particularly where water availability is a potentially limiting factor. Net volume licensing has the potential to allow increased economic outcomes through improved licensing of access to water. Net volume licensing differs from traditional water licensing in that it authorises access to water on the basis of ænet useÆ rather than æthe gross volume takenÆ. This paper asks under what conditions net volume licensing is likely to be feasible and effective. In particular, the paper examines the information and accuracy requirements to allow net volume licensing decisions to be made. This work is based around five case studies in Victoria that were used to examine the potential for net volume licensing for mines and quarries. Assessing a potential net volume licensing arrangement requires the regulating authority to have an understanding of the inputs and outputs of water to a site. In contrast, assessment of take and use licences consider only a single input. It was concluded that the conditions that lend themselves to net volume licensing include: well understood water inputs and outputs, including appropriate accuracy of information where the location of site water inputs and outputs are the same where the timing of extraction and discharge can be managed to minimise impact on the water resource.A key remaining challenge is establishing an accounting framework that allows net volume licensing under current water resource limits. "Recent project failures have called into question the use and relevance of benchmarking and independent reviews, forcing a rethink of traditional processes and procedures.With cost estimates and schedules dramatically varying from lows seen around the global financial crisis to peaks experienced in the recent mining boom, benchmarking has ranged between essential and misleading.Profound shifts are now underway in future project delivery strategies as the market moves away from cost-plus engineering, procurement and construction management. The current trends in project implementation are to utilise more lump-sum design and construct or fixed-price supply and construct contracts. This trend will remove transparency in detailed cost information by reducing the sources and clarity of cost data.Independent peer reviews (IPRs) of studies and investment recommendations performed over the last decade have both failed to prevent flawed or deficient projects from proceeding to approval and funding, and been successful in ensuring that owners did not proceed with doomed investments.In recent times, it has been recognised by some owners, contractors and engineers that traditional benchmarking checks or IPRs, or a combination of both, will not necessarily produce reliable assessments of study conclusions and of the forecasts of project outcomes. To be of value, the benchmarking process now also needs to recognise the highly volatile responses from the engineering and construction industry to the current and future markets for their services.Similarly, reviewers who draw upon benchmarks of past project experiences on an understanding of the things that shaped and influenced their outcomes need to be more aware of how a future dynamic market may impact the outcome of the projects and raise warning flags accordingly.With the commodity cycle currently approaching what is hoped is its bottom, ensuring that benchmarking and independent reviews evolve into reliable, transparent and worthwhile processes becomes even more important. "The Australian mining industries approach to life-of-mine planning has improved considerably in recent decades. It now needs to be matched by, and embedded in, mining governance systems that utilise a comprehensive whole-of-mine-life approach within a jurisdictional, industry and regional regime rather than just focusing on specific impacts in isolation. The need for a more comprehensive approach is supported by the many mining legacies, from historic, recent and some operating mine sites around Australia. There are sites that are leaving enduring environmental, community and public health impacts that are yet to be accurately assessed. While a number of these sites in Australia are estimated to be more than 50 000, this is probably an underestimation, with a lack of data and different state-based approaches complicating attempts to quantify mining legacies as a national issue. Qualitative assessments about the extent and nature of mining legacy impacts on nature and communities across Australia are also required if we are to understand and avoid ongoing and future mining legacies.This paper commences with an exploration of mining legacies as an umbrella term for previously mined, abandoned, orphan, derelict or neglected sites. This is followed by a discussion of the current status of mining legacies as an Australia-wide issue, contrasting the Australian response with overseas examples. Common themes from past workshops are explored recognising that mining legacies are a growing public policy issue and identifying key ingredients for a successful response. Supporting this, and based on national data which re-enforces the need for action, is the changing scale and intensity of mining in Australia that, while lowering costs for mine operators, increases the liability that may eventually fall to the state if mine sites are not rehabilitated effectively. Though a national issue, mining is a state and territory responsibility, so the current approach to mining legacies is then examined state-by-state. Given the widespread application and recent changes to bonds and levies in Western Australia (WA) and the Northern Territory (NT) the merits of both are examined with reference to specific case studies. Despite the current division of responsibility and diversity of approaches, however, mining legacies remain a significant and growing problem with a recognised need and repeated call for cooperation and coordination at a national and international level. This paper has been developed for æThe Race for SpaceÆ conference. It ranges over various aspects, all of which are within the umbrella of marketing. The question is posed because many engineers, tunnelling and other specialisations, frequently demonstrate an unwillingness to embrace marketing. The in-pipe treatment of slurries with polymer addition shortly prior to deposition is a noteworthy emerging technology of increasing popularity. Although polymer treatment has been shown to substantially modify and improve depositional and dewatering behaviour in a significant number of cases, the impacts of polymer treatment on geotechnical performance of tailings are less well understood. For example, certain combinations of polymer and slurry type have been shown to result in lower final densities at a given vertical effective stress. Despite these lower densities, polymer-treated tailings often exhibit peak undrained shear strengths consistent with untreated material. However, the sensitivity and/or brittleness of the material may be negatively influenced by the looser state created. Although these changes have been studied, most testing available in the literature was undertaken on relatively ‘fresh’ samples of polymer-treated material. However, significant shear may occur following treatment and prior to the commencement of settling and self-weight consolidation as the material moves down the beach.To study the effects of shearing on the subsequent performance of polymer-treated tailings, a test program consisting of consolidation, triaxial and direct simple shear tests was undertaken on presheared polymer-treated material. Materials used were identical to those used in previously published studies on the impacts of polymer treatment in a ‘fresh’ condition. Shearing of the polymer-treated material generally appeared to lessen the impacts of the polymer treatment process. However, the behaviour of the material when sheared indicated that the polymer was still impacting the behaviour of the material in some respects. The results indicate the importance of the consideration of shearing on material behaviour when planning and designing a tailings deposit where polymer treatment is to be implemented.CITATION:Reid, D and Fourie, A, 2015. Cooling of coal mines in the Bowen Basin, characterised by steep geothermal gradient, is presently achieved mostly through rental surface bulk air cooling in summer months. This paper argues that future mines will be required to focus their cooling resources more intensively to manage a challenging thermal environment where virgin coal temperatures of over 50¦C at a depth of 500 m are expected. Currently, mine cooling systems are employed to maintain the wet bulb temperatures (WBT) to below 27¦C at which point the risks of heat stroke or other heat-related issues are manageable. The capacities of these systems are in the range of 6 MWR to 10 MWR. The relationship between high working temperature environments and injury frequency rates is well established. Therefore, provision of appropriate cooling strategies and understanding their optimum performance and suitability are important to Australian coal mines of the future. This paper evaluates the underground temperature profiles of deep, gassy coal mines with propensity for spontaneous combustion and proposes the long-term cooling pathways to effectively manage thermal hazards. Thermodynamic modelling is performed on a longwall face and includes air leakage effects from goaf streams at various locations along the longwall face. The strategy summarises the application of underground bulk air cooling, chilled water sprays on the shearer and the resulting temperature profiles. Considering the new mining projects planned for the Bowen Basin region, a review of implementable cooling strategies such as mid-gate mobile bulk air coolers (BACs), spot coolers, underground bulk air cooling and the use of chilled water to enhance the positional efficiency of cooling plants, are discussed in this paper. The pervasiveness of poor sampling practices in and around mineral processing plants could seem intriguing in view of the various documented evidences both for causes and consequences. To this extent, this paper revisits the well-documented but lesser-known fact that failure to care sufficiently about how samples are selected and managed is the mother source of almost all sampling biases. The authors believe that the potentially huge leverage between causes and consequences as well as the diversity of people involved in sampling call for a globally integrated solution rather than for a point solution. Such a globally integrated solution has already been put forward by the AMIRA P754 Metal accounting – code of practice and guidelines (AMIRA, 2007) that inherently requires accuracy to be targeted, measured, reported and managed. Furthermore, always in order to avoid a point solution, several layers of protection against biases must be put in place with each one involving a different ownership whenever possible. This is exactly the role intended by the supervisory bias detection method described in this publication. It is based on the continuous monitoring of the expected value of reduced residuals obtained from statistical data reconciliation conducted in a metal accounting context. "The rise of autonomous haul truck fleets may have been initially driven by the rapid escalation of the cost of equipment operators, but the actual improvements reported by the major iron ore miners far exceeds the simple reduction in workforce. Utilising cost models developed for feasibility studies and mining contract modelling, the limits of cost improvements due to simple labour reductions are compared to those achieved by the early autonomous fleet adopters and through traditional process improvement techniques such as fleet class upgrades or hot-seating of equipment. As autonomous fleet implementation matures, it is likely that the gains seen by current adopters will seem minor compared to the limits generally governed by the limit of equipment utilisation. IonicRE acknowledges within our mining industry, there is a common belief that workplace health and safety, often referred to as safety, is just a matter of ‘common sense’ – something obvious and easy. However, at IonicRE, we hold a different perspective. We understand that safety is far from easy. We recognise the need to emphasise the importance of understanding and conveying the inherent difficulties of working safely. We are committed to implementing processes that support individuals in achieving our safety objective of eliminating fatalities and permanently disabling injuries. To build resilience and sustainability into safety performance, we draw parallels with the principles underpinning sustainable and exceptional production performance. Achieving sustainable safety performance demands effective leadership, meticulous planning, adept management, genuine care and unwavering commitment. We’ve leveraged various tools and techniques, such as DISC theory, Maslow’s hierarchy, process control, Kaizen, Six Sigma and Kirkpatrick’s 4 levels, among others, to facilitate this improvement. There methods play a pivotal role in developing a Safety Blueprint for enhanced safety performance. This paper provides an overview of IonicRE’s Safety Blueprint, a strategic framework for developing our safety capability. Our capability is underpinned by three key pillars. Firstly, a comprehensive risk management approach is imperative, encompassing the understanding of hazards, the identification of threats to our people and the associated risks. Secondly, it entails providing and enforcing accountability to sustain our safety capability. Lastly, it involves constructing an effective defence system against threats and harm. Implementing these pillars requires a meticulously devised change process. Anticipating resistance and potential setbacks, we underscore the importance of having the right people and a wellcommunicated vision for safety at IonicRE. A Safety Blueprint serves as a detailed plan outlining the path toward a future goal. At IonicRE, we contend that safety in the mining industry has generally lacked a coherent and effective Safety Blueprint – a comprehensive plan to navigate the journey toward a destination. Drawing parallels with NASA’s detailed plan for landing a man on the moon safely, we question why, as an industry, we cannot similarly eliminate fatalities. While progress has been made in the last century, we must not wait another 50 years to eradicate fatalities from our industry. Examining Safe Work Australia data from 2008 reveals that 47 per cent of mining fatalities result from vehicle activity and 40 per cent stem from individuals being struck by an object. As of December 7, 2023, seven lives have been lost in the mining industry in Australia this year, indicating a stubborn trend mirroring 2022, with limited improvement over the past 25 years. These incidents are not isolated or unexpected. We understand the hazards and controls, yet fatalities persist. IonicRE considers that the mining industry stands at a critical juncture – do we accept a plateau in mining safety performance, or do we rethink our approach? At IonicRE, we are thoroughly reassessing the hazards that threaten our people, systematically redefining effective risk control measures and establishing a robust framework to hold individuals accountable for the effective implementation of the control measure.

"As of 1 December 2014, the 2012 edition of the JORC Code requires Ore Reserves to be defined by studies at the pre-feasibility or feasibility level. This paper examines how the pathway for most mining developments is determined in the Pre-Feasibility Study and how a trade-off must be made between the need to make the best decision, the constraints of limited time and resources, and the level of the project’s accuracy and uncertainty in terms of value. Issues considered include framing the scope of the study, planning for robust decision-making and ensuring effective communication between the diverse disciplines within the team.An inherent conflict exists between the immediate value added to a mining business from an increase in ore reserves resulting from a ‘quick’ Pre-Feasibility Study and the long-term value of pursuing a development strategy based on proper investigation and evaluation of the options. FLSmidth (FLS) has spent the last 15 years, working with customers and engineering houses to deliver innovative improvements in crusher safety, coupled with the latest, maintenance friendly, crusher design. The key focus being to prevent service personnel from working underneath the crusher during maintenance and obviate the need for personnel to be exposed to suspended loads when performing tasks such as, main shaft installation, for example. Improvements include: full top-service capability to ensure the safest and fastest way to disassemble the crusher for maintenance purposes, which also removes the requirement for a service cart; a selfaligning main shaft which ensures remote assembly is now possible, keeping service personnel well out of harm’s way; And rotable shells, or the ability to perform relines off-station, allows for quick shell ‘swap-over’ without the downtime associated with removing, refitting and curing time associated with epoxy backing. The high flow spider improves large material entry into the crusher, reducing blockages and downtime and therefore maintains crusher capacity. Each size of crusher in the range comes with an option to increase the standard feed opening to a larger one if desired to compensate for ‘blocky’ or ‘elongated’ feed material, a common problem for Pilbara hematite iron ores. Power capability has also been increased with a maximum of 1500 kW, to match the higher throughput capacities being achieved. This due to uprated eccentric speeds and larger discharge annulus. Increased eccentric throws and mantle diameters are also now a reality, when compared to more traditional designed gyratory crushers. To keep up with the improved design features of the Mk V, digitalisation has also been upgraded to maximise performance capabilities to ensure that the most efficient reduction and throughput capacities are achieved, whilst utilising the higher powers now available as standard. Condition monitoring ensures that the crusher is at its optimum operating capability by monitoring and adjusting the crusher settings via feedback from additional sensors, ie main shaft spin, temperature and vibration. Camera monitoring capabilities are available as is an advanced oil contamination monitoring system. As a result of the above design improvements, it will be shown that the Mk V range offers benefits such as: enhanced safety features, increased availability, faster maintenance turnarounds, higher power utilisation, equivalent product size at higher throughput capacities and with Remote operation capabilities. All of which result in a gyratory crusher with higher levels of safety and a lower per tonne operating cost.

Achieving occupational health and environmental noise objectives is a major consideration in the planning or operational phase of resource development and industrial projects to meet the needs of the workforce and community and comply with legislative requirements. For material handling systems, ventilation plants, mobile equipment, process plants and fixed infrastructure, noise emissions need to be considered at the design phase. The preferred approach is to provide noise emission technical specifications, but in many cases this is not stipulated. An occupational noise requirement, such as ‘not to exceed 85 dBA at 1 m’, is often provided, but this will not achieve the required occupational or environmental noise objectives and may cause overly stringent requirements when they may not be needed. It should be noted that when developing the technical specification, measuring compliance needs to be taken into account as, in some cases, measuring may be very difficult or even not possible.This paper will discuss the requirements for providing an effective noise specification that ensures the environmental and occupational noise objectives are able to be achieved and that, once installed, compliance can be measured. It discusses planning such as when to set the objective, correlating the appropriate objectives for the environmental and occupational noise requirements, allowing for measurement tolerance, providing a suitable criteria and data format for the suppliers to respond to and methodology to measure compliance. Different phases of a project require different approaches to planning for noise management and these will be discussed in the paper. With the current focus in the mining industry on reducing costs, while simultaneously improving ore quality, infrared spectroscopy is a tool that can potentially assist companies to meet both challenges. Changes in the nature of infrared spectra are strongly influenced by changes in mineralogy, which is a key input variable for exploration (geology and orebody modelling and ore characterisation) and mining (pit design, mine scheduling and processing plant design/management).Infrared spectroscopic logging of drill holes has been embedded as a standard tool in BHP Billiton Iron Ore exploration, with a process set up to automatically deliver mineralogy and associated imagery to the end users (typically exploration geologists). The availability of consistent and automated mineralogy drill hole logs across a project is improving the output quality and reducing re-work.BHP Billiton Iron Ore is now looking into using the same infrared spectroscopic data for other applications, including improving predictions of geometallurgical and geotechnical parameters. Trials show that addition of infrared spectroscopic data to conventional data sets (element analysis and depth information) is significantly improving the accuracy of regression models to predict the lump-fine ratio.Further initiatives around infrared spectroscopic data in BHP Billiton Iron Ore include the installation of infrared spectroscopic sensors over conveyor belts, infrared spectroscopic mine face scanning and infrared spectroscopic blasthole logging. The ultimate vision is to have consistent, seamless mineralogical data from infrared spectroscopic sensing available throughout the mineral value chain (exploration/mining/processing). This seamless infrared spectroscopic data ‘bridge’ will allow the transfer of knowledge between the different sections of the value chain (exploration, mining and processing). For example, ore handle-ability could be predicted on exploration samples using regression models built from processing plant observations. In the opposite direction, information gathered about the buried stratigraphy by infrared spectroscopy utilised during exploration, could be used to predict the stratigraphy encountered during mining. With commodities suffering dramatically low real prices, mining business margins are under intense scrutiny. Unfortunately, management systems developed early this century for manufacturing are driving counterproductive behaviours that choke productivity. The paper and presentation will explain this and present a proven methodology for increasing productivity. This will be supported by operational examples from Australian and American mining management to demonstrate the importance of modern business performance measurement and analysis systems. It will explain the importance of management systems in driving organisational change to sustain superior productivity and margins. The paper will explain why many executives and managers confuse production (a measure of volume) with productivity (which measures efficiency and effectiveness). It will explain how this and other counterproductive managerial and operator behaviours and attitudes are driven by traditional business management systems exacerbated by managerial and consulting fads. The paper will begin with the simple principle that to improve results one needs to first improve the process producing the result û and will show how this is often violated. Improving productivity then boils down to:accurately identifying opportunities using sound, modern measurement, analysis and reporting systems; methodically improving operating and commercial processes, and changing peopleÆs behaviours and attitudes to sustain changes in practices. The paper will include fundamentals of applying sound measurement and analysis to:processes directly, eg cycle time charts and their impact in cyclical (non-continuous) operations commonly used in rock breakage; drivers of productivity; and process results themselves since correct analysis identifies opportunities accurately. The paper will cover the importance of practical leadership and the need to follow a simple, solid plan for changing systems that drive behaviour. Overall, it will highlight use of modern performance Measurement, Analysis and Reporting systems to drive behaviours and improve margins - without capital investment û and make executive and managerial work easier and more effective.
