The anorthosite complexes and related rock types of the Indian Precambrian shield are primarily associated with either cratons or mobile belts. They were metamorphosed under amphibolite to granulite facies conditions. The major rock types are chromite-bearing meta-anorthosites, amphibolites, basic granulites, pink granites and gneisses. This study was carried out on chromitite bearing samples from Sittampundi Anorthosite Complex (SAC), Tamil Nadu, to evaluate the nature and textural settings of platinum-group minerals (PGM), using state-of-the-art technology. The structure and petrology of SAC were well studied by earlier workers (Subramanian, 1956), but only scanty data on geochemical, petrology and mineralogy of PGM are available. The mineralogy of the samples is dominated by chromite (>70 mass per cent), plagioclase (An90) and chlorite-actinolite with orthopyroxene (En85). Details of the petrological evolution of the Sittampundi complex will still have to be studied further, but indications of magma replenishment at the level of chromite formation and the elevated PGE values associated with the chromitite samples make the Sittampundi complex a promising target for future exploration activity.

Australia is not capitalizing on the raw gems and precious minerals that it produces in abundance. In particular, there is an unrealised value for diamonds due to lack of processing after mining. Australia could enhance the value of its raw jewellery products by developing and integrated jewellery industry. For instance, initiation of a diamond industry would require training programmes to educate people in the requisite skills, such as diamond sorting, cleaving, sawing, bruting and polishing. Equally important would be the training of people in design jewellery, manufacturing, and appropriate diamond grading and sales techniques. Future technological advances in diamond processing will decide where the major diamond processing centres of the world will be. Australia, for a relatively small investment, could develop a highly productive diamond processing capacity using the new technology available. Australia's geographical position, and advanced banking and communication facilities provide the potential for this country to become a major trading centre for diamonds. ON mineral lease 38 of the Sulphide Corporation Limited, Broken Hill, a shaft was sunk in the early days Ior prospecting purposes and at the present time it is accessible as far as the 1000-ft. level where a connexion exists with the main workings of the Corporation's Central Mine, mineral lease 9. About the year 1895· a crosscut was driven east from this shaft at the 1330-ft. level cutting the Central Ore-body in mineral lease 9 and the shaft is supposed to extend a further depth of 25 ft; but no records of any of this work are in existence, the whole of the evidence being based on hearsay and memory:Fig. 1 shows the position of the Extended shaft in relation to the main workings. New sedimentological and biostratigraphic data indicate that the Leron Formation in the Markham Suture Zone, Papua New Guinea (PNG) represented Pleist- ocene alluvial fan-delta deposition in shallow marine to lacustrine environments. The distribution of sedimentary regimes in the Leron Formation indicates that during collision zone evolution, various tectono-sedimentary regimes do not always track the movement of the triple-junction systematically as idealized by Crook's (1989a) model. The migration of various tectono-sedimentary regimes are also controlled and influenced by the effects of second-order geometric features of the convergent margins. Leron Formation in the Markham Valley represents late to post-collisional marine to fluvial molasse. Foraminifera indicate that the collision and concomitant suturing of the Markham valley occurred after 1.32Ma.

The natural semiconducting mineral rutile and sphalerite exhibited highly photocatalytic activities on degradation of methyl orange under visible light irradiation. The isomorphous substitutions of host metal ions by foreign ions and other defect states in natural semiconductors altered the band structure, decreased the intrinsic band gap, and then made them very attractive for solar energy utilisation. Our study indicated that natural semiconductor minerals might be suggested as a new class of cost-effective and solar light-responsive photocatalyst.

The Department of Industry and Resources (DoIR) is responsible for several sets of legislation, which, among other things, regulate the storage, handling and transport of dangerous goods as well as every aspect of the life cycle of explosives in order to prevent explosions, fires and spillages. The legislation with particular relevance to explosives includes: The Explosives and Dangerous Goods Act 1961; the act deals with the storage, manufacture, sale, import, authorisation and use of explosives. It is primarily framed for use of explosives and fireworks in the general community but also has relevance for storage on mine sites. The Dangerous Goods (Transport) Act 1998; this act regulates the transport of explosives on public roads, but not on mine sites. The Mines Safety and Inspection Act 1994 (MSI Act); this act and supporting regulations deal with the full spectrum of occupational health and safety in the mining industry. There is a substantial section in the regulations dealing with the use of explosives at a mine site.DoIR has identified the need for security upgrades of the Government Explosives Reserves, the need to tighten security measures at mine sites, the need for improved security checking for licensed shotfirers and the need to restrict the availability of explosives to authorised people who have had appropriate security checks. It is also clear that we need restrictions on the sale and use of ammonium nitrate (AN). A number of additional security measures are being proposed and all proposals are being refined by ongoing industry consultations. These will be adopted into new explosives regulations in association with the new Dangerous Goods Safety Act 2002 (DGS Act). Government finalised the act in June 2004. The act remains dormant until new explosives and dangerous goods regulations have been prepared. When the DGS Act and a suite of regulations are proclaimed as a package, sometime between December 2004 and April 2005, the old legislation consisting of the current two acts, will be automatically repealed. It is also proposed that all explosive regulation, including those under the MSI Act will be consolidated in one place under the DGS Act for user friendliness.

For 20 years the US Bureau of Mines has been researching strategies for improving the physical, social, and psychological work environment of the miner. The products of this program have shown that a consistent link exists between safety and productivity, and the key to this link is the use of effective human factors and management practices. There are specific research findings from the research projects of the Bureau on ergonomic design of mining equipment, redesign of tasks (especially materials handling) to minimize back injuries, human resource management techniques for increasing safety and productivity, and improved shift rotation schedules. Current research is continuing these themes with new applications to high technology mining systems, including computer assisted extraction devices and mine monitoring.

Recently discovered Carboniferous bentonites are variable in charadeI and thickness, but being altered aeolian, ash-fall tuffs, they are probably extensive. Most are the Ca-montmorillonite type without the natural swelling characteristics of the Wyoming deposits, but their situation, thickness, and response to beneficiation through cation exchange may give them some potential as sources of future economic deposits.INTRODUCTIONLoughnan and See (1959) gave an account of bentonites and fuller's earth deposits of New South Wales. The most likely potential industrial sources were those occurring in the uppermost formations of the Newcastle and Singleton Coal Measures (Permian) in the Hunter Valley and deposited during epochs not marked by strong contemporary vulcanicity.One feature of the record of known occurrences at that time was the absence of bentonites from the thick volcanic sequences of the Carboniferous, but since this paper appeared, many bentonite beds have been discovered by the writer in the Carboniferous facies formerly known as the "Kuttung Series".The purpose of this contribution is to report briefly on the occurrence, genesis, mineralogy, and economic potential of these deposits which augment possible sources of bentonite near major industrial centres on the eastern seaboard.The potential world demand for bentonite would increase markedly with the trend to pelletization in the steel industry, if its use in this field became more general. The present paper gives the design of a new HGMS for magnetic separation of sulphides. The main characteristics of this HGMS are using iron-cladding saddle-shaped magnetic coil for instead of the ordinary magnet, and combining reciprocal-linear motion with vibration to actuate the separation box, and the magnetic field intensity is high up to 2T as well. For improving the magnet system design, a modified finite element method is used to calculate the distribution of magnetic field intensity of separation space of the magnetic coil, and accordingly the calculation results the magnetic leakage coefficient can be determined easily, thus designers apart from the empirical way. A new approach to resource estimation at the exploration stage is emerging, based on the application of simple software techniques. The techniques combine the power of interactive graphics with proven database, analysis and estimation tools. With effective use of these tools the geologist now has maximum chance of deriving a reliable structural and grade model from the limited exploration data. Unlike cutoff-based polygonal methods, the resultant geological model can immediately be used to evaluate any economic scenario.These modelling techniques are embodied in MINEX-3D, an Australian software system. With the emergence of the 386-based PC and high resolution (VGA or better) graphics, MINEX-3D makes the power of this new 'desktop geological modelling' accessible to most exploration geologists.

A linear motor properly wound can serve as a mechanism for separating paramagnetic sulphide minerals, like pyrrhotite, from other sulphides and associated gangue minerals. The effectiveness of separation depends on the energising current of the separator, the frequency of the ac cycle, and the particle size of the minerals. The speed of travel of the minerals over the surface of the separator is also a function of particle size, and appears to be constant. The movement of pyrrhotite, magnetite and iron filings of comparable size fraction (150 ¦m +74 ¦m) on the linear motor surface has been observed using a cine camera. An attempt, has been made to give a theoretical basis for the movement of the particles by calculating the minimum electrical energy required to move them. Further, the rate of decay of magnetic moment of the particles has been estimated for magnetite and it has been found that sufficient residual magnetism existed in the particles after they had been exposed to the first half of an ac cycle for them to have like polarity with the second half of the cycle. The particles are therefore repelled from the motor surface every second half of the cycle. This repulsion due to remanent magnetism is the probable cause of particle movement over the linear motor surface.

Climate change and global warming present a significant challenge as unsustainable levels of greenhouse gas emissions arising from human activities continue to be emitted. The cement industry is responsible for between five and ten per cent of annual world carbon dioxide emissions; most arising from the manufacture of Portland cement (PC). An effective way of reducing emissions is by incorporating supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) as partial PC replacements. SCMs are silicate or aluminosilicate based pozzolanic materials which, in finely divided form, combine with water and calcium hydroxide (lime), liberated by cement hydration, to form compounds exhibiting cementitious properties. Pitchstone is such an aluminosilicate and has the potential to act as an effective pozzolan for partial replacement of PC. In North Queensland, Australia, a vast deposit of pitchstone is mined and processed for expandable perlite aggregate. During the classification stage of the excavated natural material, waste pitchstone fines (PF) less than 0.5 mm in size are generated. This study evaluates the waste PF as a viable, eco-friendly pozzolan for the partial replacement of PC. The reactivity of the PF is compared to fly ash (FA), using the pozzolanic compressive strength activity index (SAI) after seven, 28, and 91 days ageing at 20 per cent and 40 per cent PC substitutions. PF was found to be comparable to FA as a pozzolan at 20 per cent PC substitution at all ages tested. However, for the 40 per cent substitution blends significant strength was only achieved at 91 days ageing for the FA blend. The pozzolanic reactivity was also investigated using thermogravimetric analysis to determine the degree of free lime present after 91 days. In all cases where an SCM was added, the free lime was observed to be consumed with increasing age.

Most developing projects face a range of technical and non-technical challenges, and examination of development histories can potentially provide insights into improved approaches to project development. The Kestanelik project in the Canakkale region of Western Turkey was acquired by Chesser Resources Ltd in 2008. Turkey is a significant and growing source of gold production, with sector participation by both domestic and international companies. While the broad ranges of challenges faced by developing projects is well known, there are relatively few case studies in which the range of technical, environmental, social and governance challenges are presented in a single contribution. Recent studies of undeveloped complex orebodies have particularly shown the extent to which environment, social and governance (ESG) complexities contribute to project delays and failures. The Kestanelik project faced a full range of technical and ESG complexities, and provides an illustrative example of the associated challenges. CITATION: Valenta, R, 2018. Today tunnel segment liners are sealed with corner-vulcanised gaskets made of extruded elastomeric compression profiles. The profile geometries and the elastomeric materials have been further developed in course of time to meet the steadily increasing water-proofing requirements. After 40 years of using such compression gaskets, a wide range of proven standard profile geometries and well-known brands can be found on the market. Even so, there is still potential for further developments and improvement, not only with regard to the water-proofing performance. Permanently increasing cost pressure in the segment production plants demands further developments and new solutions with regard to application techniques. This is an abstract only. No paper was prepared for this abstract.

Two industrial case studies in which detailed investigation of the flow behaviour of mineral slurries is used to assess the feasibility of pipeline solid transport are described. The first example deals with the pumping of highly concentrated bauxite tailings to disposal, while the second exam- ple examines the possibility of transporting high-density Victorian brown coal slurries which previously has been thought as uneconomical. It is demonstrated that these typical solid handling problems can be solved by a good understanding of the rheology of suspensions.

A commercial Philips X-ray Fluorescence (X.R.F.) analyser was converted to an experimental instrument suitable for determination of the accuracy to be expected of X.R.F. on line analyses of concentrator slurries. Problems with stability of slurry sample presentation were eliminated by a number of minor modifications.By the use of multiple linear regression techniques instrument calibration equations including error terms were determined for copper flotation feed slurries. Results indicated that the accuracy of copper and iron analyses of flowing slurry samples could approach that of static pressed powder samples.Possible means of reducing the error terms to a level of at least that of pressed powdel' samples involve alternative methods of compensating for the per cent solids in the slurry, Design is under way for installation of a plant unit.

As it is probable that a large proportion of the members of the Institute attending this meeting are connected with the metalliferous side of mining, the writer thought that, as coal and coke are required for various purposes in considerable quantities by their companies, some particulars of the coal industry might be of interest, especially when visiting such an important coal-mining centre as Newcastle. It is proposed to deal with the matter from the mining and economic point of view, as the geology has been so well and exhaustively dealt with in various publications referred to in the bibliography at the end of this paper. In the immediate vicinity of the city of Newcastle the collieries are gradually being abandoned, and during the past few years the Wickham and Bullock Island, Stockton, Hetton, Newcastle Coal Mining Company's "B," and the Australian Agricultural Co's Sea pit, have disappeared from the coal-producing list of collieries. AIl of these collieries worked the Borehole seam, from which, up to date, the largest quantity of coal has been produced in the northern district.It is the bottom seam of any present commercial value in the Upper or Newcastle coal-measures, and although the coal-in this seam has not been entirely 'exhausted in the collieries referred to, they have been abandoned for various reasons. For example, although about 60% of the seam (18 to 20 ft. thick) was left in the workings in the form of rectangular pillars under the city of Newcastle, this was not sufficient to 1?revent'the subsidence which took place about twelve years ago.Again, large quantities of coal in the Borehole seam have been left to protect the shipping arrangements at the Dyke, and other...

Coal Mining Land Use on the southern coalfields often preceded other land uses. Over the past century overlying land use has altered significantly, particularly with water supply storage development, road system building, railways, pipelines, electricity reticulation schemes and general urban develop- ment. National Parks were declared over coal bearing lands. Little regard was paid to the coal under the land surface by land developers, Government instrumentalities, central planners and the Metropolitan Water, Sewerage and Drainage Board and others, and little value was placed on this valuable energy source. These bodies derived no benefit from the under- lying mineral. In these circumstances, mine operators and such surface land users were put into adversary roles. Mass sterilisation of coal resources resulted. The loss of reserves continues, although the problem has become better under- stood. An Energy Impact Statement (EIS) submission by all surface land developers has been proposed as a means to justify the impact of the development on the coal reserves Beneath.
