Steel fibre reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) is increasingly being used as ground support in both civil and mining applications. In recent years, methods of assessing the performance of SFRS have been developed. These include the beam test such as that prescribed by ASTM C-1018 and the panel test prescribed in the EFNARC European Shotcreting Standard. The panel test has gained popularity in recent times due to the two-way action modelled in the test. However, some difficulties have been noticed. Shear failures sometimes occur and there appears to be a rather high degree of variability in the panel test results. A new method of testing panels has been proposed. A circular panel supported on three symmetrically arranged points has been assessed at the University of Western Sydney. This paper describes the new test which may be the basis of a new specification for the testing of toughness of SFRS and summarises research work which has been carried out to-date.

TheSouthern Alps in the South Island of New Zealand are currently rising rapidly as a consequence of continental collision along the Pacific-Australian plate boundary. Rapid uplift has resulted in a major thermal anomaly in the shallow crust beneath the alps. Alpine topography and associated intense precipitation, coupled with the thermal anomaly are responsible for vigorous combined topographic/convective circulation of water through the shallow crust.   Uplift is greatest in a wedge-shaped region between the Alpine Fault and an associated second-order backthrust system, the Main Divide Fault Zone, approximately 20 km to the east. The Main Divide Fault Zone is segmented into NNE and NE striking faults, which are regionally sub-parallel to the Alpine Fault, but dip northwest in the opposite direction. Reverse oblique-slip on the Main Divide Fault is in an easterly direction, with a greater component of strike-slip movement on the NE trending faults. Elevated topography in the Mt Cook region is related to thrusting of a relatively homoclinal sequence of semi-schistose rocks on top of lower-grade greywacke, which controls the position of the Main Divide. Tectonically induced fluid flow resulted in only minor alteration and hydrothermal mineralisation of fault-rocks in Alpine and Main Divide Faults, and localised deposition of quartz and/or carbonate in the immediate hangingwall.   The wedge between the Alpine and Main Divide Faults is segmented by third-order structures north of the Mount Cook region. A series of right-lateral (-085/700S) and left-lateral (-150/600SW) faults, which are synthetic and antithetic to the Alpine Fault, respectively, developed as a conjugate set during uplift. Fluid-flow in the Southern Alps is controlled by these third-order fault/fracture systems. Cu-Au mineralisation, hydrothermal veins, and surface hot spring activity are localised by third-order fault/fractures and appears to be enhanced where conjugates intersect.

Of late there have been various papers published on this subject by various authorities, in which certain definite factors influencing slime settlement have been brought forward. As the principles set forth by these writers are of great interest, and have, in most cases, been generally accepted, the author will review them in the hope that by discussion some more knowledge may be brought to bear on many points connected with the subject.The definition of slime at the present time is not a standard one, and varies according to different authorities, some defining slime as ore crushed to such a fineness that it will pass through a screen of standard size, say 150 or 200-mesh, in water (1, 2);others as that part of the finely-crushed material which is in the physical condition which causes it to remain in. suspension in water, and possesses pr?perties which render it almost unleachable (3). Authorities seem divided on this point, but of late American writers seem to prefer the former definition. Electrochemical Behaviour of Massive Chaclopyrite Bioleached Electrodes in Presence of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus caldus In this work, the monitoring of bacterial and chemical dissolution of massive chaclopyrite was evaluated using cyclic voltammetry (CV); the mineral surface was examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the elements were examined by Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDAX). The electrolyte employed for the electrochemical tests was the medium used to bioleaching the electrodes (3.0 g/L (NH4)2+SO4, 0.5 g/L K2HPO4, 0.5 g/L MgSO4+7H2O and 0.1 g/L Ca(NO3)2).The results showed differences in voltagramms carried out by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus caldus: In bioleached electrodes tested in the presence of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, the anodic and cathodic current signals were larger than with Acidithiobacillus caldus. The analysis of CV results allowed attributing the different peaks observed in both the direct and reverse potential scanning to the oxidation of chaclopyrite to a secondary copper mineral (bornite, chalcocite and covellite) and its reduction via different non stoichiometric copper sulphides intermediaries. Surface evidences were observed by SEM, and chemical elements evidences were also investigated by EDAX.

The mineral composition and microtextures of a cubanite-rich sulphide ore are described and cubanite breakdown textures are illustrated. The occurrence of cubanite in macroscopic dimensions is featured.The origin of the ore is tentatively related to a composite ore fluid arising initially from an ultramalic source and extracting some metal components from an older granite mass along the margin of which the serpentine was emplaced. Some alternative possibilities as to origin are also mentioned.

Lower greenschist quartzo-feldspathic schists within the N-S trending Earnslaw Synform of the Upper Wakatipu area are pervaded by late-stage quartz filled extensional and extensional shear fractures, with quartz-scheelite lodes infilling normal faults. Exposed veins/lodes mapped over at least 1000 km2 define a paleoflow system developed during late metamorphic exhumation of the schist. Both veins and lodes have consistent angular relationships to the schist foliation independent of their location on the Earnslaw synform. Unfolding the synform leads to a regional subhorizontal foliation and a systematic set of subvertical quartz veins striking NNW extending over a depth interval >5 km, striking parallel to a set of normal faults hosting the quartz-scheelite lodes. The structures define an extensional regime with s1 sub-vertical, s3 oriented WSW-ENE, a low differential stress, and suprahydrostatic fluid pressures.   The quartz-scheelite lodes (<2 m thick) occupy faults which cross-cut the quartz veins, and are traceable for a few hundred metres, at most. The lodes consist of laminated and/or massive quartz, slivers of crushed and folded schist, random and discontinuous lenses of scheelite with clay selvages separating the lode from relatively undisturbed wallrock schist. Textural evidence suggests that slip developed incrementally with total displacement on faults during lode formation on the order of a few ten's of metres.   The distribution of Glenorchy veins demonstrates broad scale hydrothermal flow through low-permeability schist, channelled within dilatant mesh style structures comprising interconnected shear and extension fractures. Flow through the lodes was likely derived from the greater surrounding area via the interlinked network of fractures and focused into the low displacement shears. Available evidence suggests the system developed together in a uniform extensional stress regime toward the bottom half of the seismogenic regime.

The following observations on the mineral composition of the lead-zinc ores at Captain's Flat, New South Wales, are based upon the examination of a collection of specimens made during a brief visit to the mine in January, 1942, in conjunction with earlier studies of specimens and mill products, which have 'been the subject of various Mineragraphic Reports, Captain's Flat is about 35 miles south of Canberra, and is connected with the main line from Goulburn to Bombala by a branch line to Bungendore, 23 miles away from the mine.The geology of the mine has been described by Kenny and Mulholland2 and by Harper.3 The country consists of Silurian sediments, which have been invaded by a composite sill of quartz-felspar-porphyry. Both sediments and sill have been folded gently, the axial lines of the folds trending north and south. In the vicinity of the orebodies the folds are steeper, and thru,st faults are associated with the anticlines. The intense compression and shearing that accompanied the faulting has converted the adjacent porphyry to schist. The Captain's Flat orebodies occur along such a zone of shearing and faulting, on the eastern limb of a steep, north-pitching anticline. At their southern end the orebodies are enclosed in the slates underlying the porphyry, but the northerly pitch of the fold carries the slate to greater depth in the northern part of the mine, where the orebody lies beween schistose porphyry on the hanging wall and massive porphyry in the footwall.THE OREBODIESThe orebodies occur along a N.-S. strike length of 4,200 ft., and from the point of view of mining, fall into three sections: the Elliot's Section to the north, the Central Section, and the Keating's Section to the south. The Keating's Section is separated from the Central Section by 500-600 ft. of mineralised ground of so low a grade as' to be called barren, and is offset about 125 ft. to the 'east of the Central body by an oblique fault striking N.300E. THE following really forms the second part of, or a sequel to, a paper, " Ventilating Metalliferous Mines: a Method of Attack," read before the Broken Hill Branch of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in May, 1920. In that paper the writer advocated a consideration of the question of ventilation in metal mines from a different aspect to that 'which had hitherto prevailed locally. Various factors regarded as having an important bearing on the subject were set forth, together with the results of observations made during ventilation tests carried out at the mining department of the Zinc Corporation.During the subsequent discussion the question was raised of the possibility of any practical application of the method of attack described, and also whether the theoretical considerations mentioned were likely to be of any real utility to the mining engineer engaged in ventilation work in a metalliferous mine.

Alluvial gold was discovered on Sudest Island in 1888, and by 1893, an official production of 10 000 oz had been won by expatriate miners from shallow alluvial and colluvial workings. Hardrock sources were located and while one was developed at Mt Adelaide, production is unknown. Sudest Island comprises mostly phyllites and lesser coarse grained rocks which are cut by metamorphic quartz veins and basic (locally shoshonitic) intrusives. Sheared and altered basalts and serpent- inites represent are believed to be elements of an ophiolitic suite inferred to be associated with metamorphic core complex development and thus similar to tectonic environments on Misima and the D'Entrec- asteaux Islands. No epithermal-style quartz suggestive of a target similar to that on Misima Island has been identified on Sudest. A hardrock source for the alluvial and colluvial gold is interpreted to be metamorphic quartz veins similar to those in the Bendigo- Ballarat Zone of central Victoria, possibly remobilising gold derived from the meta- sedimentary and meta-igneous rock pile. The present focus is on development of a small scale alluvial gold mining operation in conjunction with exploration for hardrock targets. This latter programme remains at a reconnaissance stage.

Until recently, the Australian mining industry received unquestioning encouragement from both State and Federal Governments. Now governments adopt a more questioning outlook about, for example, the proportion of local mine income accruing abroad, about the contrib- ution of the industry to public revenue, and about the industry's impact on the environment. This paper reports on attitudes at a recent industry-government-academic conference on planning and problems for the minerals sector in the next decade and beyond. It also examines a government policy review in Canada, which has undertaken some change in direction of mineral policies in the last few years.

From statistics on general and electrical fatalities in the Australian mineral industry, it could be said that the present approach to industrial safety is irrational. Deaths are few and decreasing in number, yet spend- ing on occupational safety is large and increasing. State mine safety inspec- torates are being expanded and a National Occupational Health and Safety Commission was recently established. Recent data are analysed in the paper and mining industry fatalities placed in perspective with deaths in other areas. Cost effectiveness of different strategies is discussed along with social implications. Strategies found successful are described and others suggested.,

Most of the existing models of the mechanisms of drilling and cutting processes are oversimplified in both stress state and failure criterion. On the other hand numerical modelling techniques are a more versatile method with great potential for development. In reviewing drillability and predicting performance of excavation machines the empirical tests, which simulate the physical breakage action in excavating processes are seen to be the best in terms of penetration rate predictability. Future methods of determination of drillability should concern the breakage characteristics and rock abrasivity involved in the two basic types of attack, i.e., percussive and rotary drilling.

Potential acid rock drainage from the destruction of metalliferous sulph-ides is recognised as a critical factor in the design and economics of any mining venture. While this realisation is relatively new, mining companies have embraced the issue with the aim of scientifically quantifying the magnit-ude of the problem, specific to indiv-idual properties.Coinciding with the development of the open pit mine at Porgera, a comprehensive assessment of the potent-ial for the formation of acid rock drainage was initiated in 1991. Detail-ed study of the mineralogical charact-eristics of all rock types, along with extensive test work to determine the maximum potential of rocks to generate and consume acid (known as acid base accounting or ABA), has been conducted. Correlating this with the known and interpreted geology of the open pit has indicated a strong relationship between rock type, sulphur content and the acid base character. This relationship is used daily as a simple, cost effective means for classification and management of the variety of material types produced from the minincx operation.

THE method of stope surveying as practised at the Mount Lyell Company's mines has been evolved out of the exigencies created by special conditions. It presents some novel features, and has proved effective for all requirements. All stope measurement work is brought under one complete system, to which office methods are standardized. Before proceeding to deal with the subject a brief description of the physical characteristics of the ore-bodies of each mine and the method of stoping will serve to show, cause ,for departure from ordinary survey practice.NORTH LYELL MINEThe ore-bodies of this mine occur on or near the conglomerate schist contact, and, being probably the result of replacements of both rocks, they rarely present any definite walls. It is usual for the payable material to merge into the respective countryrocks, and the limit of the occurrence is defined rather by assay value than by any distinct natural boundaries. The general configuration of these ore-bodies, therefore, is highly erratic both in horizontal and vertical section, so that, in order to obtain an accurate record of any occurrence, the measurement of the actual contour at short vertical intervals is essential.Stoping is carried out on a modification of the "rill." system, perhaps more properly described as "arched back" or "dome" stoping. Mullock rises are placed in as convenient positions as the erratic configuration of each ore-body will allow, and aroundthese rises the back is kept well arched, both longitudinally and transversely. A water/air model was developed to simulate the refining of molten aluminium by the sparging of gas through an impeller. The optimal gas dispersion depends upon selecting the correct gas rate for a given impeller rotational velocity to prevent flooding or channelling. Correlations illustrating this flooding behaviour exist for standard impellers within standard tank geometries. However the validity of these correlations has not been substantiated for gas dispersion in high temperature molten metals with non-standard tank and impeller dimensions.

For the past 120 years, Portland cement manufacture has been undertaken on the shores of the Whangarei Harbour in northern New Zealand. Through a serendipitous conjunction of geo-chemistry, the argillaceous marl found on Limestone Island in the harbour and Tikorangi Hill provides a perfect mix of the various elements required for strong and durable cement. Golden Bay Cement, and its predecessors, have been the guardians and managers of the use of these minerals. As the demands of the concrete industry have increased, so have the needs of the manufacturing process. Careful mapping of the resource at both Portland and Wilsonville Quarries has been undertaken. This has allowed the Company to change the Quarry operation from a purely volume basis to one of selection and blending of constituent minerals. Within the manufacturing process, change has also been introduced. Analytical techniques, using x-ray fluorescence spectrometry, microscopy and the application of modem data collation, has allowed fine tuning of the process. The Company now produces an increasing diverse range of products for both the domestic New Zealand market and exports to various South Pacific countries. This paper discusses the processing of limestone and æcement rockÆ into cement clinker, an intermediate synthetic mineral ground into cement. It examines control and blending regimes, and some methods used in determining process efficiency. An important technique ærediscoveredÆ has been the application of microscopy to clinker.  Examination of the major silicate minerals enables interpretation of the kiln processing and feedback to process operators. It also enables a prediction of indicated performance when ground into cement. Examples this paper give an insight into the use of minerals from Northland in some of the more important construction projects in modem New Zealand.

Since the first occupation of New Zealand in 800 - 900 AD, various useful minerals, rocks, and energy resources have been identified and extracted. The Maori prized greenstone for ornaments, tools, and weapons, used argillite and obsidian for tools, and decorated their carvings and bodies with colours made from clays, limonite, and vivianite. They were aware of coal (waro), but are not known to have used it for fuel. Before 1840, visiting whalers used coal from Shag Point to heat their trypots. Mining activities got underway in the 1840s, with the finding of manganese oxide deposits in the Bay of Islands, Kawau Island, Waiheke+ Island, and Taieri Mouth. Secondary copper ore was mined on Kawau Island (1846 - 1869), and native sulphur was exported from White Island to Europe. The discovery of gold at Coromandel in 1852 and a few years later in Northwest Nelson and Otago opened the way to gold rushes in these areas and subsequently in Marlborough and Westland. Mining of alluvial gold evolved through sluicing to the invention of gold dredges; first (1863) was the simple spoon design, but later (1881) large steam-powered bucket-ladder machines weighing around 3800 tonnes were built. Most of the gold dredges had gone by the early 1960s, following a revival in the 1930s, but one large dredge operates today on the Grey River. Other mining events included: underground mining of coal from 1849 and underground mining of lode gold from 1863 in the Coromandel, Reefton, and Otago fields. Most outcropping coal deposits had been discovered by 1870. Building stones were used by the early settlers for construction of houses, churches, banks, public buildings, and some universities from 1836. Aggregate for roads, railway ballast, and concrete, and limestone for cement and fertiliser, and clays for bricks and china have been quarried for many years.

When an aqueous suspension of pyrite and manganese ore reacts with oxygen, manganese is dissolved by the ferrous sulphate and sulphuric acid produced by the oxidation of pyrite. The kinetics of certain steps in the overall reaction were studied. A rate equation for the oxidation of ferrous sulphate by gaseous oxygen was derived for the temperature range from 1000 to 200° C. An exact rate equation for the production of ferrous ion from pyrite could not be established but it was shown that the temperature, oxygen pressure, pyrite surface area, and the reduction of ferric ion by pyrite are important. A rate equation was derived for the reaction of manganese dioxide with ferrous sulphate. A major facfor controlling the rate was whether or not ferric oxide was formed by hydrolysis at the manganese dioxide surface.It was shown that if hydrolysis was prevented the factor cpntrolling the rate of the overall reaction ,was the rate of production of ferrous ion, and little ferrous ion was oxidised by oxygen. When hydrolysis of iron did occur, the overall rate was not a simplefunction of anyone factor and much ferrous ion was wasted by oxidation with oxygen.INTRODUCTIONIn another paper (Cornelius and Woodcock, 1958) the results of the reaction of an aqueous suspension of a manganese ore and pyrite with oxygen are reported. It is shown that the ferrous ion and sulphuric acid generated in situ by the oxidation of pyrite, dissolves manganese as manganous sulphate. By using knowledge-based technology to create a Virtual Mining Enterprise and integrating it with existing technical and financial computer systems, a gold mining company has been able to reduce the time taken to produce a mine plan from 14 weeks to less than one week. Typically, the mine planning process requires circulating and managing large amounts of information. Even with the use of computers in todayÆs business, this is often still a manual process involving file transfers and individualised spreadsheets. Mine planning also involves understanding and managing large quantities of complex and interrelated variables. Added to this is the ever changing dynamics and constraints associated with the business of mining. These issues not only hamper the planning process but also question the validity and usefulness of the mine plans being generated. By integrating the information and knowledge of the numerous departments involved in mine planning into one core Knowledge Base - so called æone version of the truthÆ, - mining companies are able to overcome these pitfalls experienced in traditional planning methods. Once set up, the Knowledge Base creates and runs a virtual mining enterprise with which to visualise and test various scenarios of mining, business and logistical activities. The final output is an optimised enterprise-wide plan with clear and detailed instructions for each of the divisions of the company.
