A geostatistical study was made of diamond drill hole intersections within 18CC stope block at the C.S.A. Mine, Cobar, N.S.W. The stope block is located in 18CC orebody which is a massive sulphide - multiple vein, Copper-Zinc type, lacking clear definition on gangue mineralogy, base-metal assays and total sulphide considerations. Of the variograms constructed for inter- section width and copper, lead and zinc grades and accumulations, only zinc displayed behaviour amenable to model fitting and kriging procedures. Zinc grades were calcu- lated for sub-blocks comprising the total stope block and comparison with equivalent grades determined by traditional methods showed them to be generally less extreme in the highest and lowest grade sub-blocks. The total-block grades derived by the two methods were almost the same. It is suggested that the failure of copper to show variogram continuity might reflect the difficulty in defining the actual 18CC orebody, a proposition which is supported by the poor continuity in the variogram of horizontal width. In the case of lead the poor continuity may be due to the frequent manner of occurrence of galena as coarse grained patches of limited extent. The results of the study, did not provide a convincing reason to depart from the traditi- onal methods of grade estimation at the C.S.A. Mine.

The Kyaukpahto gold deposit is located at latitude 23¦ 47Æ 55" N and longitude 95¦ 56Æ 35" E in the Kawlin-Wuntho district, Sagaing Division, Myanmar. Gold mineralisation is hosted in sandstone of the Male Formation (Eocene) and occurs as stockworks and disseminations. The high-grade gold mineralisation is locally concentrated in a breccia zone. The gold deposit is closely associated with a NNE-SSW trending fracture system that forms tensional open fractures. These tensional zones are thought to be directly related to the Sagiang transfer fault system that experienced several hundred kilometres of northward dextral movement during the post-Upper Miocene. Major sulfide minerals are pyrite and arsenopyrite with minor galena, chalcopyrite and sphalerite. Gold mineralisation is associated with intense silicification, sericitisation and argillic alteration. Primary Type I fluid inclusions in the quartz from the mineralised zone are 5 to 15 ¦m across and yield homogenisation temperatures of 239¦ - 310¦C and salinities of 1.2 - 10.9 wt per cent NaCl equivalent. Laser Raman spectroscopic analysis indicates the presence of CO2 and CH4 in Type II fluid inclusions. Sulfur isotope analysis of disseminated pyrite in the ore zone by the laser ablation method indicates d34S values from -5.48ë to +5.53ë. The geology, alteration, ore mineralogy, fluid inclusion microthermometry and sulfur isotope data of the Kyaukpahto deposit are consistent with an epithermal ore deposit model for the deposit. However, the presence of CO2-liquid bearing fluids and the detectable CH4 in the gaseous phase of the fluid inclusions conflict with a typical epithermal origin for the Kyaukpahto deposit. The host siltstone and mudstone sequence, trace element geochemistry, and the disseminated nature of sulfide and gold mineralisation are also common characteristics of a sedimentary rock-hosted gold deposit, and these features may indicate a Carlin-like affinity. A quarter of the North Island, New Zealand is covered by weathered volcanic tephras of mainly andesitic and rhyolitic compositions. Rapid weathering of basic volcanic glass and slower weathering of acidic glass have produced short-range order alumino-silicate clays such as allophane. Although amorphous to x-rays they have a high degree of local structure. Allophane comprises hollo spheres of approximately 40 diameter and 7 X wall thickness. This small particle size and morphology gives a very high surface area (up to 800 m2/g). Ferrihydrite is another short-range order clay of similar small size and high surface area; it has ò formed from the rapid oxidation of water containing ferrous iron derived from volcanic rocks. The quantity of allophane present in tephra depends upon the climate, the nature of the volcanic glass and the time it has weathered. In New Zealand highest amounts (-50%) occur in beds of andesitic ash deposited on old ignimbrite surfaces with mean annual rainfalls >1600 mm. Both allophane and ferrihydrite will react with oxyanions, such as phosphate, arsenate or borate, and remove them from solution. Other anions such as fluoride also react with aluminium sites on the mineral surface. At NZ Soil Bureau, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), New Zealand, techniques have been developed for granulating allophane to enable it to be used to remove pollutants from solution without dispersion into the liquid phase. This granulated allophane can be used to remove phosphate from sewage effluent or fluoride from tap water without having a sedimentation stage to remove the clay.

For nearly 100 years, the flotation plant metallurgist has often wondered what is happening æbeneath the frothÆ. To assist in unravelling this mystery, new technology has been developed as part of the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association (AMIRA) P9 project, to measure gas dispersion characteristics (such as gas hold-up, superficial gas velocity and bubble size) in industrial flotation cells. These measurements have been conducted in a large number of cells of different types and sizes by researchers from the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) and JKTech. A large database has been developed and the contents of this database are described in this paper. Typical cell characterisation measurements show a wide spread in values, even in the same cell types and sizes performing similar duties. In conventional flotation cells, the typical gas hold-up values range from 3 - 20 per cent, bubble sizes range between 1 and 2 mm, and superficial gas velocity ranges from 1 to 2.5 cm/s. The ranges of cell characterisation measurements given in this paper will enable plant personnel to compare their operation to other similar types of operations from around Australia and the rest of the world, giving opportunities for further improvement to flotation plant operations.

In China the hydrogeological type of solid mineral deposits can be divided into A. Mineral deposits with fissure water; B. Mineral deposits with pore water; and C. Mineral deposits with karst water. The hydrogeological conditions of mineral deposits with fissure water are relatively simple with the exception of a few cases. Mineral deposits with pore water are few but great amounts of ground water can be encountered in the mine accompanied by floating sand or slope failure during the exploitation. Mineral deposits with karst water are complex in their hydrogeological conditions. Enormous inrushes occur frequently in the mines of north China; Karst collapses are a serious matter in the mines of the south; Subterranean river and conduit systems are often encountered in the southwest. This paper will give full discussion on these features and put forward a way of combating and controlling the groundwater problem in accordance with type and feature.

Laboratory test work has indicated that substantial increases in recovery could be achieved by improvements in technology in all these areas. A distinct zonation occurs in the nature of submarine volcanic activity associated with westwards propagation of the Woodlark spreading system into continental crust. Olivine tholeiites (Type I MORB) flooring one spreading segment in the Eastern Sector of the Western Woodlark Basin are accompanied by more evolved "ferrobasalts". Basaltic andesites and Mg-poor andesite-dacites occur on axial and flanking seamounts respectively. In the Western Sector, Mg- and K-rich olivine andesites occur in a rift valley and on an axial seamount near the tip of the propMr/8 tig rift. Observed correlations between 6Sr ratios (0.7028-0.7041), REE patterns and K contents imply a complex petro- genesis with the relative importance of mantle heterogeneity and crustal contamination difficult to resolve.

The effect of accurate detonator delay timing on blast results can now be studied with the development of the ICI Electronic Detonator. This detonator has an accuracy and precision orders of magnitude greater than the current range of pyrotechnic delay detonators. A series of field trials have been conducted to quantify the effect of delay accuracy and timing on blast performance. These trials have demon- strated that delay timing can have a marked influence on blast fragmen- tation, muckpile displacement, blast vibration and airblast.

The installation of a final cleaning column at Ok Tedi Mining Limited was carried out to increase final concentrate grade in order to reduce concentrate handling, shipping and treatment charges and to reduce penalty payments. To fast-track the project a decision was made to install a full-size column on one of the two parallel circuits, designed on information readily available and utilising the experience of mill staff and an engineering consultant, rather than delay installation while a pilot scale program was conducted. A 3.66 m diameter by 12.8 m high column was installed to produce 40 t/h of final concentrate from a combination of rougher concentrate and recleaner concentrate. The column design and sparger system were by Cominco Engineering Services Limited.

Selective oxidation of minerals was used in this study to separate by flotation the copper sulphide minerals of chalcocite, covellite and chalcopyrite from the arsenic copper sulphide minerals of enargite and tennantite. It was found that a satisfactory separation of these minerals was only possible after selective oxidation of their surfaces in slightly acidic pH conditions, or after oxidation and selective dissolution of the surface oxidation products with a complexant in basic pH conditions.

With the proclamation of the Environmental Protection Act, 1971-80, the Environmental Protection Authority and Department of Conser- vation and Environment were established to enhance the quality of the environment. Proposed gold developments of all scales can be referred to the Authority in the form of a Notice of Intent. Environmentally significant projects might then require preparation of an Environmental Review and Management Programme. Current environmental issues include the'effects of clearing by prospectors,, mine dewatering and tailings disposal. INTRODUCTION In the past, the environmental aspects of gold industry related activities have received little attention. However, with the proclamation of the Environmental Protection Act, 1971-80, mechanisms were instituted which allowed both for referral of projects to the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) and establishment of the Department of Conservation and Environment. As well as providing assistance to the EPA on referred projects, the Department is concerned about a number of environmental issues associated with the gold mining industry.
