Estimation of operating costs in the nickel production industry requires a detailed analysis of material flows from mine to smelter to refinery. Despite the small number of nickel producers compared to other base metals, the existence of two very different ore types (sulphide and laterite) and a wide variety of mining and processing technologies make the identification of these flows of critical importance if an accurate global picture is to be obtained. Smelting and refining processes in nickel metallurgy have evolved with a high degree of adaptation to specific operating conditions in different locations. Overall costs are calculated by combining individual cost elements for each unit in production chains from mine to saleable metal product. The average cost of western world primary nickel production in 1995 was US$2.07/lb ($4560/tonne). Average operating costs remained virtually unchanged in the three years to 1995 after an 8.5 per cent fall in 1993, but a 3.9 per cent increase to $2.15/lb is expected for 1996. A major factor in this rise results from the lower prices of copper and cobalt this year, reducing the by-product credits available to major producers.

The Dome Mine of Timmins Mining company is located in South Porcupine, N.W. Ontario. The orebody being mined partially lies in the No. 3 shaft pillar. Stability analysis has been carried out to establish the influence of nearby mining on ground movement in the shaft vicinity. Mathematical modelling of shaft displacement has been done for stope layout at depths from 180-210 m and distances of 10-50 m from the shaft. Analysis indicated that ground displacement around the shaft is below 1 mm/m and one third less for cut and fill than in the case of open stope mining. The result of the investigation was later confirmed by cut and fill mining of this orebody.

Deposition of uranium in the South Alligator river area has been influenced structurally by reverse faulting; and lithologically by carbonaceous shales and sandstones. Mineral assemblages suggest a mesothermal-epithermal epigenetic mode of origin. The ultimate source of the uranium and associated metals is probably in deep seated magmatism which is expressed at surface in the widespread penecontemporaneous vulcanity.

The cement industry requires large quan- tities of limestone, its main raw material. It is the major consumer of this mineral. Limestone is widely distributed throughout Australia but location in relation to major markets, and transport considerations render most deposits of no economic value. Of those which are sufficiently close to the major me- tropolitan markets many are rejected as being unsuitable on grounds of quality, inadequate size for major development, or other reasons such as environmental considerations. Detailed geological investigations are necessary, not only to prove raw material sources prior to establishment of a cement works but also to permit planned extraction programmes and satisfactory grade control during subsequent development. Conventional field techniques have generally proved adequate for raw material exploration. Data assessment and reserves estimation also are by conventional methods although the specific requirements of the industry relating to raw material and cement quality, the type of manufacturing process and fuel used are relevant. A number of case studies from different geological environ- ments are examined and comparisons made bet- ween the predictions of the exploration stage and subsequent experience in quarrying prac- Tice.

Neutralization with lime is a simple, cheap, and effective means of treating acid raffinates from uranium processing to' raise the pH, reduce the concentrations of dissolved salts (including heavy metal impurities), and remove amine by adsorption. Two-stage neutralization, using limestone in the first stage at approximately pH 4 and lime in the second, lIlay be advantageous.Lime neutralization of mffinates in the pH range 7 to 8· 5 generally reduced the radium ·concentration to 10 to 200 pCi 1-1, but ·there was considerable scatter in the experimental data. The radium concentration was further reduced to less than 3 pCi 1-1 by co-precipitation of barium (radium) sulphate with 10 mg Ba (as barium chloride) per litre of raffinate. Adsorption of radium on barytes was -also effective in reducing the radium concentration in neutralized raffinate to less than 3 pCi 1-1.The radium concentration of pit water was readily reduced to less than 3 pCi 1-1 when pit water containing 0·01 M sulphate as ammonium, calcium, or sodium sulphate was treated with 20 mg Ba per litre of pit water.Adsorption on barytes was also effective in removing radium from pit water containing 0·03 M sulphate.

The Hedong Gold Mine is located in the Yantai area, Shandong province, China. It is an underground mine with an annual gold output of some 700 000 grams. The orebody is located on the edge of the Wanger Shan metamorphism zone, and the hangingwall of orebodies is thus defined by a prominent set of fractures. The proximity of the metamorphism zone and the inclusion of the fracture set ensure that both the orebody and the country rocks are unstable. The main orebodies dip at an angle of between 40 to 45¦, with a strike length of 160 metres and a horizontal width of 50 metres. Surface subsidence in the area is not permitted. Cut and fill mining is usually practiced. As the mining operation proceeds to greater depths, the ore grade is diminishing and it is necessary to find a more efficient stoping method. Sublevel open stoping with sequential extraction and filling of each sublevel has been designed and applied in situ. This new mining method is called æsublevel open and fill stoping methodÆ in the mine. Experience to-date is that new mining method is satisfactory.

Botanical exploration has identified many plant species that naturally accumulate very high concentrations of elements, particularly heavy metals. The enormous potential applications of some of these species to remove metals from soil (phytoextraction) are slowly being realised. The discovery of hyperaccumulation has resulted in considerable research into applications for removing contaminants (phytoremediation) or more importantly, in the context of this discussion, for commercially æfarmingÆ metals (phytomining) from metal-bearing soils. Currently published phytoextraction models estimate Ni yields using Berkheya coddii (a South African nickelophyte) are approximately $US 750 ha-1, excluding the cost of processing. Research indicates that B. coddii will also accumulate significant amounts of Co, resulting in a considerable increase in the value of the crop. Modification of the substrate by acidification, fertilisation and/or chelation indicate fruitful avenues for improving this yield by increasing the extractability of the target element, elevating biomass production rates and/or rendering other contained heavy metals extractable. Plant uptake of more insoluble elements, such as Au, may be induced in many plant species using chemical compounds. These chelates applied to the soil, form soluble complexes with poorly soluble metals forcing them into the soil solution. Plants may then accumulate these metal complexes through transpiration. Research has achieved foliar Au concentrations of 78 mg kg-1 in Iberis intermedia, 56 mg kg-1 in Brassica juncea and 9 mg kg-1 in B. coddii (on a dry weight basis). Therefore in theory B. coddii could phytomine a soil containing modest concentrations of Ni, Co and Au to yield 116 kg Ni, 36 kg Co and over 6 oz Au ha-1 at a current value of $US 4000. Root crops have also shown promise in chelate assisted Au accumulation (eg 6.8 mg kg-1 in Beta vulgaris and 118.5 mg kg-1 in Raphanus sativus). Phytoextraction, in its varied applications, is rapidly coming of age as a technology having considerable potential for application in environmental science and the minerals industry. Phytotechnology employs unique plant biochemical behaviours in the rhizosphere, driven by the sunÆs energy, to seek out and concentrate low levels of heavy metals at very low cost.

Agglomeration pre-treatment is a new process now being used here and overseas whereby problems arising with the heap leaching of gold and silver from materials containing critical amounts of fines or clay can be simply and cheaply overcome. The technique involves mixing the material with a suitable binder, commonly Portland Cement, and tumbling the moistened material to agglomerate the fines. These agglomerates are placed on the leach pad and cured prior to leaching. Test results, plant and operating cost data are presented. INTRODUCTION Heap leaching is a low capital and operating cost alternative to conven tional processing techniques for gold and silver extraction. A number of commercial-scale operations have recently started in the United States and the method is being considered for further deposits there and elsewhere.

The integration of gravity, geomagnetic, LANDSAT data and geotectonic history is used to formulate an ore deposit model which can be used in the implementation of mineral exploration programmes. The behaviour of coal in a process is a function of both the coal properties and the processing conditions. In the case of the Loy Yang coal deposit, extensive testing has been undertaken to determine: ò the extent, distribution and structure of the coal resource; ò the variations in properties throughout the resource; and ò evaluation of the behaviour of the coal during processing. This has involved the conduct of an extensive borehole drilling program, backed by geological modelling and material characterisation (chemical, physico-chemical and petrological). Evaluation of the behaviour of the coal during processing has ranged from theoretical modelling, laboratory-scale investigations through to pilot scale and full-scale tests. Until recently, the bulk of the work was directed at evaluating the behaviour of the coal for existing pulverised fuel (pf) firing/steam boiler technology and a high level of understanding has been developed of both the coal resource and its behaviour within these systems. More recent efforts have been directed towards the evaluation of new technologies directed towards cheaper and more efficient power generation using this coal. Loy Yang coal has been evaluated in the following technologies: ò Hydrothermal dewatering/direct coal-fired gas turbine; ò Steam fluidised bed drying; ò Solar drying/densification; ò Briquetting; and ò Gasification.

"Column flotation has been successfully applied to iron ore concentration since the 1980s with the goal of reducing silica content and allowing for the efficient production of pellet feed. Since then, columns have been widely used in iron ore processing due to: their lower capital and operational costs when compared to conventional cells their ability to generate higher concentrate grades and recoveries.Currently, more than 100 columns have been installed within Brazilian iron ore processing circuits for rougher, cleaner and scavenger duties. Despite it being a well-established approach, several technological advances have improved column design, accessories and performance. The Merrill-Crowe process for gold and silver recovery yields a low grade concentrate containing high levels of zinc and copper. External refining charges and high transport costs prompted the company to establish itsown enrichment facility.The route chosen was a wet chemicaltreatment which converts the gold, silver and other metals to their chloride. This is achieved with hydrochloric acid and sodium hypochlorite. Gold is recovered from the resulting filtrate by cementation with copper.The solid residue from the gold process is washed and treated with ammonia which dissolves the silver chloride. Metallic silver is recovered from this solution, againby cementation with copper.

Water is important commodity in the mining industry. Water is used in the many stages of mining from the exploration stages and drilling, to mine development and operation and finally throughout mine rehabilitation and post mine activities. With the use of water throughout the life span of a mine, its management is an important component in the operation of any mine. Unfortunately the use of water within the operations can be one of the major sources of pollution generated from a mine. Such contamination can occur via numerous mechanisms including ground water flow, over land flow and accidents. Contamination may occur in any stage of mining operations, for example a leaking or failed tailings dam. With the above in mind, the paper presented will focus upon the use and management of water in the mining industry: ownership rights of water û common law as well as legislative rights; a review and analysis of the existing Queensland legislation and its mechanisms for the protection of water pollution from mining operations; and conclusions drawn from the paper relating to the Queensland legislation.

In 2005, El Teniente mine began preconditioning the primary rock mass by hydraulic fracturing (HF). The major perceived benefits of this process are a decrease in the magnitude of the expected maximum seismic event and improved cave propagation. In addition, HF has resulted in new information on the propagation pressures of each fracture. Previous studies have attempted to relate propagation pressure to minor principal stress or confining stress.Considering the spatial continuity of propagation pressure and the significant quantity of collected data since the incorporation of the HF technique, minimum requirements for geostatistical modelling have been reached, permitting robust estimates inside the representative volume with acceptable errors (Cornejo, Muñoz and Rojas, 2012; Cornejo and Landeros, 2013). These results are then used to identify zones with higher magnitudes, which are mostly related to more complex geotechnical zones (intrusive and major faults) and caving singularities, making it possible to estimate the spatial extension of these zones.Finally, these results are integrated with other geomechanics aspects to support risk analysis of the mining plan.CITATION:Cornejo, J, Landeros, P, Benado, D, Caviedes, C and Pinochet, A, 2016. With a view to characterising activated carbons with respect to their ability to adsorb gold from cyanide solutions, an attempt was made to establish correlations between the equilibrium capacity constant of the activated carbon for gold (k value) and five other parameters. These parameters were percentage ash content, iodine number, methylene blue value, surface area, and pH respectively. Twenty four different proprietary brand activated carbon products were examined, the correlations being established by means of linear regression analysis. It was shown that a significant correlation only existed between k and pH value. This was interpreted in terms of the presence of oxide complexes on the activated carbon surface. Further test specifications as developed at the Anglo American Research Laboratories are also outlined with a view to the selection of activated carbons suitable for use in' a carbon-in-pulp operation. Methods for assessing both the capacity and the kinetic response of carbons for gold adsorption are presented, while the measurement of attrition resistance, particle size distribution and moisture and solubles content is also outlined. The measurement of the capacity constant for gold adsorption together with attrition resistance are considered to be necessary in the initial selection of a suitable carbon.

Before any accident prevention and total safety programme can succeed, a safety concientiousness or attitude needs to be implanted in the employees' minds. Psycholog- ical and physiological conditions play a vital role in accident causation and prevention. Both need attention in a good safety programme, but working place conditions and environment are more easily corrected. However, the challenge is to change attitudes in the minds of men - psychological factors in accidents. To do this does not require a Safety Officer, but does require a Safety Adviser. At Blackwater mine a Safety Adviser is available to all sections of the organisation to guide and assist, to provide data and material to use at meetings, to help in accident investi- gations and to help organise training. To eventually achieve total commitment requires every member of the management team to be a salesman towards all around selling an attitude to safe working, a way of life. At Blackwater mine the workforce is young overall with most employees being under 40 years old. Psychologically this is a quite different problem to a balanced ages working group. A great deal of effort is needed to communicate with the younger, articulate, better educated employee who is also generally a skilled operator in the capital intensive
