Three-dimensional microscopic modelling techniques involving specific calculations based on direct computation of the Brownian, van der Waals, Born, electrical double layer repulsion, bulk, hydrodynamic and external forces (gravity, magnetic etc) acting on and between each particle in a mineral dispersion are now feasible using advanced computer processor architectures. This contribution surveys the hardware requirements, the advantages and limitations of the approach for enabling prediction of dispersion behaviour a priori. The notion of developing a generic particle simulator, akin to the use of molecular modelling in the area of drug design, based on inputting process-relevant data (solution chemistry, mineral solids properties, hydrodynamics etc) is discussed. The methodology is illustrated with application examples involving: predictions of coagulation of mineral fines; shape and size of magnetically-flocculated hematite; and the kinetics of fouling of membrane surfaces and walls.

The gold salting fraud at Busang on the island of Kalimantan, Indonesia was exposed in early 1997 and resulted from the independent drilling, sampling and assaying of PT Freeport Indonesia which reported assays from the South East Zone with negligible concentrations of gold. Since then, a number of legal actions directed at former Bre-X directors, consulting firms and financial or broking institutions are at various stages and are based on numerous allegations surrounding the supposed existence of obvious and numerous warning signs or æred flagsÆ. These include: the absence of references to visible gold in the drill logs; the alluvial nature of the gold grains; the high gravity recoveries; the invalid comparison with Kelian; the absence of outside scrutiny and the lack of external review/audit and surface depletion of gold. The focus on the red flags has been at the expense of the numerous positive indications or ægreen flagsÆ. These include the morphology and chemistry of the gold grains, the gravity testwork, the amalgamation results, the role of external consultants, the results of a review by one of North AmericaÆs leading minerals auditing groups, the behaviour of the gold at surface and the presence of references to visible gold in the drill logs. The flawed nature of the discussion of the technical facts surrounding Busang has prevented a meaningful and informed discussion about what actually happened and has, therefore, prevented the formulation of meaningful remedies for the future.

Draglines have found wide application in strip mining coal seams down to 60m depth. A research Project funded through NERDDC has been underway during the past two years investigating the application of large draglines loading overburden into hoppers feeding into conveyor systems or off-highway trucks. This paper presents the preliminary results of these investigations and covers overburden characteristics, bucket spotting con- trol, bucket design, conceptual hopper systems, system application at representative mine sites, and broad process comparison. The studies have initiated new concepts in the extended use of draglines at deeper strip- ping depths. Alternate arrangements for dragline bucket rigging and bucket control aspects of dragline stripping operations offer productivity improvements. Extended use of existing draglines includes, draglines dumping into hoppers which feed large trucks or conveyors, trigger dump buckets rigging arrangements, and rear dump dragline buckets with integral grizzly bars. The paper details these suggestions, and points to specific areas where the most productive applied research is anticipated. Mine planning considerations detail the factors involved in selecting dragline bench heights in association with hopper operations.

The large body of knowledge about the relation between chemical process efficiency and mineralogical features is of only limited use. The profession ought to try to improve the methods of using information as well as adding to the knowledge. One attempt isòdescribed. Correlations between process efficiency factors and the mineralogical features of low- grade concentrates have been developed from both a theoretical analysis and experimental measurements. The ultimate recovery of a reactive phase in an inert matrix can be calcu- lated from simple measurements of the particle size, porosity and pore size of the concentrate, and the grain size of the reactive mineral., The rate of recovery, up to 98% recovery, can be calculated from simple measurements of particle size, porosity, proportion of reactive mineral and tortuosity. Some details are given. The correlations are of potential use in process selection and preliminary design. Satisfactory predictions have been made for near-ideal systems. Improvements in the measurement of pore size and tests on more realistic materials are required. The ultimate benefit of the correlations will be determined by the magnitude and frequency of the effects of mineralogical features other than those specified above.

PT Freeport Indonesia operates a large copper and gold mining operation near Tembagapura, Papua (formerly, Irian Jaya), Indonesia. This is a remote location with its own set of unique operational characteristics. The mining and concentrating operations typically produce a concentrate containing 2500 tpd of copper and 6000 oz of gold per day from the combined mining of a 45 000 tpd (ore) block cave operation (DOZ Mine) and a 190 000 tpd (ore) open pit mining operation (Grasberg Open Pit). The Grasberg Open Pit mine will be exhausted in 2015 at which time FreeportÆs operations will entirely underground mining methods. The Common Infrastructure Project (CIP) incorporates the elements required for the shift to underground mining at a production rate approaching 200 000 tpd. The AB Adit portion of the CIP will provide deep level access to the Grasberg Block Cave (below the Open Pit), Kucing Liar, Big Gossan, and the Mill Level Zone orebodies. Commencement of the project was September 2003. The Grasberg Block Cave is planned to start production in 2014. This paper provides details on the project scope, innovative contractual framework, advancement of mining methods throughout the life of the operation, equipment selection, manpower selection, training, geological, and socio-political conditions related to the project.

The Lihir gold operation, located in the New Ireland Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG), approximately 900 km north of Port Moresby, was commissioned in 1997 under the management of the Lihir Management Company, a subsidiary of Rio Tinto. This management period ended in 2005 with Lihir Gold Limited (LGL) becoming self-managed. LGL is now the largest listed company in PNG and a top tier mining company in Australia. The focus of the operation since 2005 has been to take advantage of strong market conditions to increase cash flow while driving operating costs into the lowest quartile of gold producers. During this period production has increased through capital expansions, most notably with the addition of a flotation circuit, and through culture change and efficiency improvements. The next step forward for the Lihir operation is a major plant upgrade to increase production to an average of around one million ounces per annum by matching the ore processing rate to the ore mining rate. The key benefits of this project will be the addition of approximately 240 000 ounces per annum of gold production, the access to an additional one million ounces of gold and the ability to meet all stockpiling requirements. The Lihir operation has come out of the boom period in a strong position, is undertaking a major upgrade at a time when prices are low and labour is available, and will be positioned to take advantage of future opportunities as they arise.

With the depletion of high-quality ores, the efficiency of extracting difficult gold ores through flotation and leaching becomes very important in the mining industry. Iron contaminants, sulfide and carbonaceous coatings on the surface of gold and gold bearing minerals significantly hinder the recovery of gold during gold processing. As the surface of gold minerals is easily contaminated, coatings of iron oxides and iron hydroxides originated from the grinding process and oxidation of iron sulfides will cause a retarding effect on both gold flotation and leaching.To mitigate the processing issues caused by undesirable surface coatings on gold minerals, a new technology in treating surface coatings of iron contaminants has been developed. The pulp potential and pH of the slurry are altered to allow dissolution of surface coatings which are further excluded by the use of complexing reagents. The current work shows that iron contaminants can be removed from the surfaces of gold through Eh-pH adjustment and chelation which result in significantly improved gold flotation response. The addition of complexants aids the formation of iron chelates to prevent the iron species in the solution from forming iron oxide and iron hydroxide in the flotation conditions.CITATION:Wei, R and Peng, Y, 2014. INAP was formed in 1998 by a number of major mining companies, with a view to sharing acid rock drainage knowledge and experience, and to coordinate global research on the management of sulfidic mine wastes. INAP is now moving to further strengthen its global role by networking with regional organisations that are active in the area of ARD, including MEND 3/NEDEM 3 in Canada, the ADTI in the USA and ACMER in Australia. The INAP-Regional Organisation partnership will be formally launched at the 6th ICARD.

Uniaxial compressive strength and Young's modulus values measured in the laboratory on NX diamond drill cores were examined statistically to bring out any significant differences between different locations in the mine which might require special treatment in subsequent photoelastic analyses of the mine layout. Correlations were sought between the strength and modulus and various other features of the rock. The estimated mineral content of the core correlated with the modulus of the core, but the range of modulus values was too limited to show any strong correlation with compressive strength.Strength in the vertical direction was found to be significantly higher than in the horizontal direction and the same pattern was followed by the moduli, but was less pronounced. It was concluded that, whilst the modulus variations were significant, they would not invalidate any photoelastic studies.

The Malvern Hills coal project is now in an advanced stage of development with the stripping of overburden from above former underground workings in which a 3 m seam of subbituminous C coal with very low ash and sulphur was previously mined. The main seam dips at 45¦ to the south-east, along with other adjacent potentially recoverable thinner seams, and the strike extent of past coal mining in the Malvern Hills approaches 10 km with most extraction by underground methods. Overburden and interburden is predominantly weak mudstone, with only very minor sandstone, whilst a 1 - 2 m thick veneer of Last Glaciation loess covers the area. The coal product from the present mine site will supply the local industrial market, with production planned to peak at about 20 000 tpa. Settling pond design has been based on several different approaches, including an estimate of likely inflows from the contributing catchment of about 5 ha under predicted storms having a ten year recurrence interval. A pond of about 1000 m2 in area has been constructed with its invert in mudstone bedrock, and soil slopes have been lined with lime-stabilised clayey loess silt incorporating a gravel armour layer. The pond outflow takes place via a 2 m high 1.8 m diameter concrete dewatering tower, with a skimmer arrangement to lower the pond by approximately 500 mm between storm events. The overflow water discharges to the main stream above a natural wetland, which will act as a secondary polishing pond, and this is to be enhanced in conjunction with the neighbouring forestry company. Discharge consents specify turbidity and pH as the controlling criteria, and both will be monitored at the settling pond discharge point as well as at the entry to the main stream. Investigations to date indicate that the pH of water exiting from previous underground workings is in the range 6.8 to 7.2, and that acidic drainage will not be an issue with this mine site. No dispersive clays have been identified in assessing the overburden and batter materials, although erosion during storm events is expected and all drains will ultimately be routed through the main settling pond to ensure adequate control of runoff-generated sediment. Reestablishment of vegetation on cut and fill batters remains a priority, and ongoing monitoring will ensure satisfactory long-term performance of the pond system.

Jarrah Decline is currently the only underground operation at the Boddington Gold Mine, (BGM). The mine is located 120 km SE from Perth in WA, with mineralisation hosted within deeply weathered felsic and intermediate intrusions and volcanic rocks of the Saddleback Greenstone Belt (Morley and McBride,1995). Open cut operations commenced in April 1987 with a mill throughout of 3.OMtpa. A number of upgrades have since taken place, with the oxide material throughput currently milled at a rate of 7Mtpa. In 1992 a separate circuit, the supergene mill, was commissioned to treat copper material from the open cut and now ore from the Jarrah Decline. Current throughput in the supergene plant is 30,000 tonne per month, with a varied blend according to mill requirements. Total gold production from the Jarrah Decline in 1994 was 60,000 ounces from 90,000 tonne of ore.

That competence is based not just on adopting internationally-developed technology but also on ground breaking research conducted at Australian research institutions, many of which have global reputations. A number of forces are now operating to speed the introduction of advanced technology to mining and processing operations around the globe and this will create pressure on the Australian industryÆs ability to retain its competitive edge. Examining the foundations of that national research base and the associated culture of innovation may provide some guide to the dynamics that will be required to maintain technical competitiveness in the future.

About 3km2 of the central Luise Caldera, in which the Lihir orebody is located, is geothermally active wit.lj gas seeps and fumaroles, and in some areas, a water table at boiling point.The proposed mine, adjacent to Luise Harbor, will be excavated to more than 200m below sea level and will extend into the geothermal system to depths at which current rock temperatures are 170¦C.

This paper describes four new families of collector products which are currently being introduced at the industrial level. A brief summary of the chemical basis behind each product family will be given. This is then followed by a selection of flotation examples which illustrate the more important use characteristics that have been observed to date. It is becoming more apparent with further testing that these four new product families can offer both technical and economic advantages to the industrial flotation process operator.

X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is a widely accepted technique for the elemental analysis of iron ores and their concentrates. Wavelength-dispersive, or WDXRF, and energy-dispersive, or EDXRF, spectrometers offer distinct advantages for particular applications, elements and concentration ranges and are, therefore, more complimentary than people might realise. A key example is the ability of EDXRF to identify, and often quantify, unexpected elements in production samples that would typically be missed by routine WDXRF. The removal of a horizontal piIlar between Nos. 9 and 11 levels (1,116 feet from the collar of main shaft) was successfully carried out by blast hole drilling, and, to the best of the authors' knowledge, this mass blast of 40,000 tons of ore (requiring the use of 7,150 Ibs. of explosive and 5,385 feet of primacord) was the first occasion on which a task of this magnitude has been carried out underground in an Australian mine.Blast hole drilling was introduced by this company approximately fifteen months ago at New Cobar Mine in sub-level stoping.This experimental drilling and blasting gave very valuable information as to the correct technique to be adopted when the final plans were being prepared for the removal of the horizontal pillar at New Occidental Mine.The dimensions of this pillar were approximately 15 feet long, and from 40 to 60 feet wide, and 65 feet in depth.The block of ore extended to 35 feet above the level and 30 feet below, the upper section being partially excavated to form the bell-hole floor and grizzly chambers used for drawing off the broken ore in the shrink stope above the No. 10 level.Description of Ore-bodyThe main ore-body is situated almost vertically in a well-defined shear zone at the junction of sandstone and slate, the sandstone forming the eastern and the slate the western wall.The ore-body consists of highly silicified slate (chert) sparsely impregnated with sulphides, containing a small percentage of copper and bismuth.The total length of the ore-body is approximately 450 feet, with a maximum width of 60 feet in the main section, which is about 200 feet long.This is the section shown in longitudinal and cross-section (Fig. 1).The ore-body is divided by a horse of mullock in the northern end into two legs, the eastern and western, which are approximately 250 feet long and averaging 25 feet in width.This ore-body is strong, hard and abrasive with extremely strong walls, an ideal proposition for open stoping and mass blasting.MiningIn all levels above No. 9 the cut and fill method of ore extraction was adopted.
