Zinc produced by pyrometallurgical processing techniques suffers the disadvantage of restricted market potential because of its impurity contents, typically lead and cadmium. Market zinc to the Special High Grade (SHG) standard can only be produced by reflux distillation refining, which is costly in terms of energy and equipment, and potentially capacity limiting. Recent published laboratory work suggested that molten salt electrorefining of zinc metal is a potentially much cheaper alternative to the reflux distillation refining. The extrapolation of the laboratory results to an industrial configuration, however, resulted in an estimated power consumption for electrorefining and associated costs offering no advantage over current reflux distillation practice. A review of this estimate now shows that a serious error in calculation was made, and that the energy consumption for the electrorefining of molten zinc would be an order of magnitude lower than that for reflux distillation refining. While this is a promising indication, further research is required before development towards an industrial scale operation is warranted. This would particularly relate to the extent to which adverse electrolyte deterioration may take place and its potential effect on the anode and cathode efficiencies of the process. This paper considers the laboratory investigations required to explore the industrial potential of the molten salt electrorefining of zinc and foreshadows some of the practical problems to be solved in further development.

Recent developments in geophysical borehole log analysis using the Geophysical Strata Rating (GSR) are now routinely used in a number Australian coal mining operations. This allows development of 3D geotechnical strata characterisation models for a range of purposes. The availability of this data provides a means to identify relationships between ground conditions and ground behaviour. As a result, several new design methods have been developed to assist in the strata management process such as roof support, longwall shield design and shaft stability assessment. The new South Mine in the Western Deep Levels complex is destined to become an ultra deep project extending to depths of 4 200 m below surface and where rock temperatures are likely to exceed 65 ¦C. Initial estimates put refrigeration requirements at 133 000 kWR. A surface refrigeration plant with an initial capacity of 42 000 kWR has been commissioned and will be used for mining the upper levels.

Complex ores, characterised by intimate intergrowths between minerals, have previously been treated by flotation with limited success. The most common problem has been that the liberation size is often finer than the lower size limit for selection flotation. A technique has been developed in which the problem is overcome by the use of a selective agglomeration procedure in which the values are coalesced with oil to a size suitable for flotation prior to introduction into the flotation machine. A complex lead ore was characterised by QEM*SEM mineralogy as having a mean galena liberation size of 15 ¦m. The best recovery of lead at 50 per cent Pb grade by standard flotation was 53 per cent. After application of the procedure, 86 per cent recovery was obtained after a single cleaner step. The oil functions as a bridging liquid in the presence of conventional collectors which render the mineral oleophillic.

The legislative operating environment, or the mineral regime, that a country has to offer is one of the key determinants that a company wanting to invest in an area takes into account in formulating its investment decision. The New Zealand Government recognises this and the importance of getting the regime right in order to provide for continuing investment in mineral exploration and mining in New Zealand. In recent years, the Government has given considerable attention to developing legislation which provides for investment to take place; for those making the investments to have a stable, fair and open investment environment with government intervention only when considered absolutely necessary because other approaches are not working; and for the people of New Zealand to know that investment must meet acceptable health and safety standards and have acceptable impact on the environment. Also of key importance is having a clearly defined mining regime which includes rules on how to obtain a permit and rules in respect of ongoing permit compliance, rights to develop a mineral resource and permit conditions (in particular, the royalty regime). In New Zealand, these matters will all be addressed in what are referred to as "minerals programmes".

This paper summarises the research, development and initial application of a sensing platform that has the potential to monitor subsurface deformations, pore pressure and other variables simultaneously to gain a better understanding of rock mass behaviour. The platform is based on Networked Smart Markers (NSMs) devices, which, with their ability for wireless communication between individual sensors and the possibility of real-time data acquisition and processing, will assist in the development of predictive tools to better assess rock mass behaviour.A good opportunity to implement this technology is in the specific application of transitioning from an open pit mine to an underground caving operation. One of the key elements to maintaining the mining business during such a transition is having a good understanding of the unique geotechnical conditions of mutual influence created during the open pit to underground interaction. Most mining operations, including iron ore, maintain a focus on continuous improvement and asset optimisation in their operations. As all the unit operations in the Mine-to-Mill value chain are interdependent, available technologies that address efficiencies across the value chain are once again in the spotlight as companies are driven to improve productivity and maximise mine site profits to increase return on capital invested. Core to continuous improvement is the need to understand the baseline and impact of changes to the process. In this paper, we discuss some of the critical attributes in the Mine-to-Mill process, including their influence on productivity and cost, the need for direct measurement and areas where they should be applied. Many initiatives can be considered to improve Mine-to-Mill processes. Mining operations are planned and executed based on designs and models to achieve the operation's objectives. However, there are many variables in the different parts of the value chain, such as blasting, material handling, crushing and screening. Therefore, measurement of the key attributes establishes the baseline for Mine-to-Mill (or Pit to Plant) performance, which is necessary to understand the impact of any proposed improvements to the process design and execution and monitor the outcomes on an ongoing basis sustain the improvements that have been implemented. This paper focuses on two types of measurement – blast movement and particle size of materials through the Mine-to-Mill process. Several innovative technologies and control loops are readily available to measure these attributes and assist operations to improve productivity and mine site profits. The size of the tangible benefits, which can flow from measuring and optimising fragmentation and blast movement, provide a remarkable return on the investment. Realising these benefits needs a focus outside conventional operation silos as a successful Mine-to-Mill project requires a multidiscipline approach across all the silos in the value chain. Required technologies are available; adding the necessary ingredients of communication and co-operation by all concerned across the silos will ensure the benefits are realised.

In the iron ore industry significant emphasis is placed throughout the mining process on meeting chemical composition specifications for the export of fine ores, however, little has been published on the implications of ore chemical composition for iron ore sinter and pellet product quality. The ore bulk composition, together with the nature of the minerals in the fine ore both play a critical role in determining the type of high temperature bonding phases that form during sintering and pelletising. This paper uses the experimental determination of phase relations in model sinter and pellet systems such as Fe2O3-CaO-SiO2 (FCS) and Fe2O3-Al2O3-CaO-SiO2 (FACS) to examine the links between iron ore chemical composition and the temperatures used during sintering and pellet firing. The phase relations help to establish the critical thermal and compositional parameters that control the bonding phase chemistry which in turn influences the physical characteristics of the sinter or pellet matrix. In a fundamental study of the physical chemistry of steelmaking slag, equilibra bet- ween hydrogen-water vapour gas mixtures and liquid slags contained in solid iron crucibles have been measured for four binary slags, FetO-CaO, FetO-Si02, FetO-TiO2 and FetO-Al203 at 14000C. From the data, the activity of iron oxide and the ratio of ferrous and ferric ions (A = Fe3+/Fe2+) were calculated for the slag composition. The best ionic model is found to be that based on regular solution of cations. The oxygen distribution between slag and metal is quantitatively expressed by this model over a wide range of slag composition.

At Pasminco Mining's South concentrator. which was commissioned in 1952. an expansion. modernisation and efficiency improvement program commenced in 1986 with a coarse ore stockpile and grinding circuit expansion. the replacement of small flotation cells and the upgrading of reagent mixing and metering equipment. The program continued with the installation of a TDC 3000 based process control system (1988) and concentrate thickeners (1990). By mid-1991 a further grinding expansion and the installation of zinc flotation feed regrind ball mills and zinc recleaner column cells will be complete. leaving the use of ceramic disc fillers and development of process control strategies as probably the remaining major avenues for improved process efficiency at present.

Rock blasting outcomes are often a shared responsibility of both the mine operations group and the mine geotechnical group. From an operational logistics and planning perspective, blasting concerns include optimal fragmentation for subsequent crushing, ensuring the blast is energetic enough to allow easy digging, and understanding the effect of muck from a previous blast on the current blast. From a geotechnical perspective, wall damage and catch bench capacity are the primary concerns. Other concerns for both teams include damage to mine infrastructure by fly rock or blast-induced vibrations, and the stability of open stopes under the pit. This work presents two blast modelling applications (or ‘apps’). The basic app instantly gives fragmentation and wall damage predictions for a given generic blast design. The advanced app loads the current pit contours, reads the blast design from a spreadsheet, and calculates the expected vibration magnitude and peak frequency. The apps have been developed specifically for the Rio Tinto Borates and Lithium Mine in California and are used to support blast design between the operations group and geotechnical group. The basic app instantly gives fragmentation and vibration predictions given a blast design by combining the Kuz-Ram fragmentation model with the scaled distance model for vibrations. The advanced app uses the signature hole method. Blasting outcomes at the mine have improved since using the apps.

This paper describes the operation involved in the sinking of a concrete-lined elliptical-shaped shaft at North Broken Hill Limited.Major factors such as geological features, future ventilation, ore haulage at depth and their relation to the location and selection of the type of shaft are described.Features covered in the sinking of the shaft include equipment details, with special reference to mechanical mucking, operational cycles based on time study analyses for sinking, concreting and the placing of steel sets. The use of spectral data has traditionally been for obtaining mineral information and for mapping out alteration systems. The output from these data is typically in the form of mineral assemblages and data on relative proportions of minerals. However there is much more than just mineral information in the spectral data. Most importantly, the data allow the user to obtain vital information on mineral chemistry for some key alteration minerals. The mineral chemistry data allow the users to evaluate multiple phases of alteration of the same key mineral species, and to assess which phase is related to mineralisation. Mineral indices can be extracted from the spectral data and plotted to represent variations in the chemistry and relative proportions of key mineral phases as downhole, section and three-dimensional (3D) plots. These data can also be compared with the spatial distribution of the mineralisation by integration with geochemical and logging data. Through spatial and statistical evaluation the mineral information obtained using spectral analysis can provide vital information to assist in building alteration models and therefore improve targeting for further drilling and exploration.

Outbursts of coal and gas are coupled both in their nature and mechanism and take place under varied sets of physical and geological conditions. The main interacting factors are geology and seam structure, seam gas composition and pressure and strata stress. By pre-draining the seam gas in advance of workings one of the factors contributing to outbursts is removed. One method of pre- draining gas from the coal seam or from areas of geological disturbance is to drill long horizontal holes in the coal seam. The technology to drill horizontal holes up to 600 m in the coal seam is now available by hydraulic control of the rotation and thrust on the drill bit and accurate survey methods to determine the vertical and horizontal position of the drill bit.

On account of the increased work required from the assay office, owing to the large additions which have been made to the smelting and superphosphate plants during the last few years, it was found necessary to build a more extensive and up-to-date assay office than the one that had been in use since the starting of the works some twenty years back.A site was chosen adjacent to the main office, so as to be free from smoke and dust.. The building is constructed of red brick, the over-all dimensions being 109 ft. x 37 ft. The roof is of fibrous-cement slates, 31 ft. high, with a two-to-one rise, and overlaps the walls to the extent of 4 ft. 6 in. on all sides.Special care was taken to give light to all working benches, fume cupboards, and balance rooms. The main chemical room occupies the entire western end of the building, and the fire room the entire eastem end. Between these two rooms are the superphosphate, refinery, and gold-parting rooms on one side of the central passage, and three balance rooms, general office, and cloak room on the other side. The height of the roof affords ample space above these central rooms for storage purposes, and also maintains a fairly even temperature. The ceiling of the main chemical and fire rooms is carried immediately under the slates, which gives a total height in the centre of about 25 ft.

A strong correlation between the reduction degradation index (RDI) of production sinter and the titanium content of the sinter mix was identified at the Ruukki sintering plant between 2000 and 2004. The titanium distribution in different mineral phases was studied using samples from pot sintering tests. Titanium additions were made using two different materials: rutile and crushed titanium-bearing haematite pellets. While both titanium additions clearly increased the RDI, titanium seemed to favour secondary haematite. The study focused on the effect of titanium in haematite, because haematite is reduced to magnetite in the RDI test. During the haematite-magnetite reduction, reduction degradation was observed. To increase accuracy, the phenomenon was investigated first by sintering and then reducing synthetic minerals under controlled laboratory conditions at the University of Oulu. The effect of titanium oxide in solid solution in magnetite on the magnetite to haematite transformation rate was studied first in order to simulate the final stage of the sintering process. In other experiments, haematite samples doped with 0.5, 2.0 and 5.0 wt per cent titanium oxide were studied using thermogravimetry under a controlled gas atmosphere (CO/CO2/H2/N2). Sintered samples were reduced using the same gas composition as in the RDI test. Polished sections for optical microscopy and SEM-EDS analysis were prepared from both reduced and oxidised samples and unreduced sintered samples. The titanium oxide content of haematite had a clear effect on reduction degradation of the samples. Furthermore, increasing titanium oxide content in solid solution in magnetite radically accelerated the oxidation rate. Similar observations regarding the effects of titanium have been reported earlier, but this was the first time the effect of very small additions of titanium were shown to deteriorate blast furnace burden quality and a reason suggested behind the process.

The Yabulu refinery of Queensland Nickel Pty Ltd located near Townsville now imports more than three million wet tonnes per year of nickel laterite ore from New Caledonia and Indonesia, making it the largest importer of any commodity in Australia. The project has illustrated that importing untreated bulk ore and re-exporting high value products makes good economic sense for the company and the nation. The economics of this exercise have been considerably enhanced in the past year by changing the project's principal product from nickel oxide sinter to refined high purity nickel metal. It is one of the few operations in the world where nickel ore is transformed to nickel metal at a single site. Several novel technological processes were developed at Yabulu and incorporated into the refinery to allow this product transition to occur. By utilising internally developed technology the new processes were installed at a capital cost of less than $10 million. It is unique for a large nickel producer to completely change the quality of its entire product range many years after the plant was constructed and considerable attention to marketing the new products has been required.

Following a summary of the development of a BF model using aerodynamic relationship and bulk fines index a blast furnace policy model is presented complete with the development of nomograms and featuring production rate, oil rate and total fuel rate. Application of the blast furnace model is then illustrated using No. 5 Port Talbot as an example. It is also shown how the policy model assists in ore allocation in the British Steel Corporation. Further developments which have recently occurred in the correlation between the bulk fines index and the permeability coefficient are detailed and a comparison made with a number of furnaces operated elsewhere. The implications of the comparisons made are that high driving rates are possible with burden containing a high proportion of sinter only if the burden behaviour in the lower parts of the furnace permits high driving rates with a steady gas distribution and low pressure drop. It is concluded that the value of a simple set of equations resulting from the model assisted furnace operators to pin-point likely causes of failure to reach or sustain target production rates.
