The Porgera Joint Venture commenced production during September 1990. A small tonnage underground mine extracts high grade gold ore using small scale stopes. Conventional drill and blast methods are used for development and production mining. Ground support is effected with Splitset anchors, grouted rebar bolts and grouted cable bolts. Splitsets and grouted rebar can be installed by mechanised means. Vertical crater retreat, slot and massfire, and modified VCR stoping tech- niques are used at Porgera. Stopes are backfilled with a relatively strong cemented rockf ill. Future stope sequences require recovery of pillars beside and under filled stopes.

An improved method of sample recovery for use with rotary percussion drilling has been developed. Cuttings can be recovered continuously from either dry or wet drilling, and the recovery under dry conditions is seldom below 99% of the cuttings brought to the surface by the rig. The system is designed for use with top drive drilling rigs using flush-jointed drill rods. The key feature of the system is a self-aligning mechanical seal around the drill rods. The sealing unit is removably fixed to a collar section of cas ing. the cuttings are recovered in a plastic bag attached to the bottom outlet of a cyclone. A valve at the bottom of the cyclone permits the cuttings representing various depths to I,e recovered separately for examination eind 0(iclysis. [u the Iron Monarch quarry, two percussion holes were drilled to depths if 30 metres and 28 metres using the unproved sample recovery system, and diamond drill holes bored 1 metre from each percussion hole. Considerable improvements in diamond drilling equipment have been made since the early 1950s. A recent drilling programme, however, at Williamtown, near Newcastle, carried out by the Joint Coal Board on behalf of the Electricity Commission of New South Wales, emphasized deficiencies in existing equipment when particularly diflkult coring conditions were encountered.Spurred by unacceptably low recoveries in coal seams in this area, the Joint Coal Board devised and developed, with the assistance of the Electricitv Commission, a new typc core lifter and a special 26 ft triple tube core barrel, designed to operate in conjunction with it in bad coring conditions.The core lifter, whieh is propped open clear of incoming core during drilling, is activated by fluid impulses generated inside the core barrel. It can be used with double tube barrels when drilling firm rocks whichdo not change diameter by compaction inside the barrel.Softer rocks. such as clayey types, require the use of a rriple tube barrel.Results from testing carried out to date in difficult areas in New South Wales coalfields have shown that greatly improved results can be obtained with the new equipment. Although developed essentially for coaldrilling, the new core lifter and barrel could be adapted to other fields of diamond drilling. Even in areas where no great coring difficulty is encountered the cost advantage deriving from the greatly inereased life of the core lifter and the adaptor in which it is housed could justify its use.

The Morobe Goldfield inPapua New Guinea has produced in excess of 120 tonnes of gold from predominantly alluvial sources. Hardrock gold has been mined historically at Wau (23 t) and Edie Creek (4 t) and geological resources have been established at Hidden Valley (78 t), Kerimenge (36 t) and Hamata (30 t).Numerous prospects have also been identified within the goldfield. Primary gold mineralisation is related to intrusion of dacitic to andesitic Edie Porphyry (2.4 to 3.8 Ma), often with associated diatremes, which have intruded along major regional structures. A full spectrum of deposit styles from proximal (mesothermal) to distal (epithermal) to the porphyry source is recognised. The transition between the proximal and distal styles is recognised both between deposits and within an individual deposit. The deposit styles should be termed porphyry related gold mineralisation rather than given the generic epithermal and mesothermal labels.   It is proposed that magmatic fluids which evolved from parent melts to the high level Edie porphyry stocks mixed with convecting meteoric fluids and were channelled along major structure and diatreme contacts. Proximal to the intrusives, gold mineralisation is associated with deposition of pyrite-hematite-quartz+/-magnetite-gold (Hamata) and pyritebasemetals-quartz-gold (Wau). The mineralising fluids were hot, and periodically saline due to pulses of magmatic fluid. Gold is non-refractory and occurs as 20 to 30 micron blebs within the pyrite.   More distal from the intrusives or under late cooler conditions, mixing of cool dilute meteoric and magmatic fluids resulted in gold deposition associated with arsenic rich pyrite-and arsenopyrite-mineralisation (Kerimenge, Hamata and Edie Creek). Gold is refractory and occurs within the sulfides either as sub-micron inclusion or within the lattice.   CO2 and H2S gases which evolved off the upwelling hydrothermal fluids as a result of boiling and pressure reductions, condensed within superficial groundwater and formed cool oxygenated bicarbonate fluids. These fluids percolated back down the structures depositing manganocarbonate in the upper parts of the hydrothermal system. At deeper levels in the system mixing of the descending bicarbonate fluid with upwelling mineralised fluids deposited manganocarbonate-quartz-sulfides nonrefractory gold (Hidden Valley, Wau and Edie Creek).   At Kerimenge the cool bicarbonate fluids have also quenched a late stage magmatic fluid rising along high permeability structures. The quenching has resulted in deposition of non-refractory gold mineralisation associated with hessite (Ag2Te)-tennantite-chalcopyrite deposition.   Within the Morobe Goldfield, a transition from deeper level pyrite-quartz+/-hematite-magnetite to intermediate level quartz sulfide and quartz-carbonate-sulfide deposition to upper level, massive manganocarbonate deposition is recognized. Gold mineralisation can occur within all levels up the system.

In the retreatment of an old tailing dump containing five per cent of lead principally as lead sulphate, the lead sulphate was floated with liquid Aerofloat reagent after sulphidising with phosphorous pentasulphide in an acid circuit. A zinc middling product was removed by flotation before recovering the lead. Concentrate products were sundried in surface dams.INTRODUCTIONDuring the period between 1917 and 1928 the Junction North Broken Hill Mine N.L. deposited several tailing dumps on its leases, which were acquired by North Broken Hill Ltd.in 1931. One of these dumps lay alongside a main road close to a residential area. The high metal prices prevailing in the post-war years (1945 onwards) provided a strong incentive for retreating this dump and transferring it to a less objectionable site.SAMPLING AND TESTINGIn 1946 a sampling and testing campaign was instituted which culminated in 1949 in a decision being made to erect a tailing retreatment plant adjacent to the dump.The dump was sampled with a 3 in. post hole auger using extension lengths of -! in. pipe for drilling to 30 ft. The dump material was fine and moist and core recovery was excellent. Hole depths ranged from 14 ft. to 30 ft., with an average dump depth of 20 ft.Individual samples were prepared from successive 9 ft.lengths of core and each sample thus obtained was, submitted for sizing and assay.The sampling showed that the dump contained approximately 380,000 tons of fine tailing assaying:

This paper presents results of an investigation on acoustic emission characteristics of granite, sandstone and rock-like material in the unconfined compression and tensile tests. Both the acoustic emission signature and stress-stain curve are analysed in the experiments.The experimental results show that different acoustic emission characteristics are observed at different stress and deformation stages in unconfined compression and tensile testing. Extensive and unstable acoustic emission changes may be interpreted as indicating failure of the rock.

To clarify the characteristics of non-uniform flow of gas through layered burdens of ore and coke, flow equations of continuity and motion were solved numerically taking account of the geometrical effect of a bed. The results are compared with that predicted by an approximate solution. A mathematical-kinetic model for determining the distributions of process variables over the region from the top to the melting level of blast furnace with the horizontal or the inclined layers of burdens is developed in consideration of the uneven gas flow. By the use of this model, the longitudinal and the radial distributions of process variables in an existing blast furnace in Japan were calculated with the aid of a digital computer. Computed results show that the process variables and the melting level change remarkably over the cross-section of the furnace and that the patterns of these distributions are similar to the results observed by other investigators.

Traditionally, the blast furnace (BF) has maintained a dominant position as the primary source of iron units. Notwithstanding the efficient nature of the process in respect of its material and energy consumption, the conventional blast furnace route is faced with limitations such as stringent quality metallurgical coke, high capital investment, etc. While BF will continue to retain its predominant position as the foremost ironmaking technology, the alternate processes may also have a role to play. Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) or sponge iron industry is all set to take a firm root in India as one important solution to the problems of shortage of metallurgical coal and ferrous scrap and high investment costs faced by the country's steel industry. The commercial proven DR processes coupled with electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking have also offered a viable alternative to the blast furnace - basic oxygen furnace (BF - BOF) route for the installation of integrated plants under specific local conditions. The performance and efficiency of DRI processes mainly depend upon the chemical and physical behaviour of the raw materials especially the iron bearing materials. Iron oxide pellet and sized lump ore constitute the oxide feed stock, while pellets form an ideal feed stock for direct reduction, use of lump ore is economically advantageous because of its lower price. National Mineral Development Corporation Limited (NMDC), being one of the major producer of iron ore in the country since last four decades, has established technology and developed process flowsheets for production of suitable calibrated lump ore for DRI production, besides supplying the natural lump ore for conventional blast furnace requirements. In addition to the above, extensive pilot plant tests have been carried out at the R&D Centre of NMDC for preparation of iron ore concentrates suitable both for direct reduction and blast furnace grade pellet feed using the iron ore fines from its own mines and as well as from the other iron ore mines in the country. For utilisation of the huge quantity of slimes generated in its ore processing plants, NMDC has planned to set up the first commercial plant adopting the smelt reduction process (ROMELT Process) for production of pig iron from Bailadila slimes. The paper mainly deals with various beneficiation techniques adopted for production of DRBF grade pellet feed from iron ore fines. Also presented in the paper, the extensive work carried out at R&D Centre on preparation and evaluation of calibrated lump ore (Natural Pellets), based on which, suitable modifications are incorporated in the ore processing plants of NMDC for production and supply of the same to sponge iron industries.

Geophysical anomalies result from the passage of hydrothermal fluids through rocks. Interpretation of these anomalies, when integrated with available geological and geochemical data, assists the construction of a conceptual model of the original hydrology of the system. The original extent of a geothermal system is often indicated by the distribution of low resistivity argillic clay alteration. Quartz-adularia vein deposits, silica sinters or stockwork (often mineralised) cause local increases in resistivity. Appropriately chosen electrical techniques can therefore be used to help target such structures. Airborne magnetic surveys have also proven useful in New Zealand epithermal exploration, because hydrothermal fluids destroy magnetite causing extensive demagnetisation anomalies. Ground magnetic surveys can sometimes be useful for geological interpretation on a local scale. Positive gravity anomalies may occur as a result of mineral precipitation (silica or calcite) in high porosity host rocks, while negative gravity anomalies can result from hydrothermal fracturing and leaching of relatively dense host rocks. The relative merits of these geophysical techniques as used in the exploration of epithermal mineral prospects are discussed, with particular reference to the Hauraki Goldfield. The preferred method for defining zones of quartz veining/silicification is vector or tensor gradient resistivity. Exploration strategies and technique refinements are suggested as a means of improving the resolution of potentially mineralised target structures, in a more efficient and cost effective manner.

The Research Centres Program initiated by the Federal Government and supported by the mining industry has had a major impact on geoscience research and education during the past five years. Eight major university based-Geoscience Research Centres are currently supported by the Government, including four Key Centres of Teaching and Research and a further four Cooperative Research Centres (CRCs). The Research Centres Program has led to a concentration of high quality research and teaching in areas of demand and strategic importance creating strong university - industry linkages and a source of well trained and motivated graduates. Over the last decade Australia's reputation as a leader in mineral exploration and ore deposit research has grown substantially, in part because of the development of the Research Centres Program, and to increased collaboration and interaction between research groups and exploration geoscientists across the industry. During a period when ore deposit research activity has been decreasing in other countries (eg USA, Canada, Japan and most European countries), equivalent research activities in Australia have been increasing, within a well co-ordinated national framework. The future challenge for universities and the mining industry will be to maintain the momentum of the successful research centres in order for the centres to become self-funding over a six- to nine-year period.

Gold, silver and palladium may be separated from the other base metals and sulphur contained in copper sulphide precipitates derived from the Sherritt-Gordon nickel process using a process involving an oxidation roast, a reduction roast and a Cu(II)/acetonitrile leach. Sulphur is removed as SO, in an oxidation roast and the hot calcine is reduced with carbon, or with carbon plus cuprous chloride. The resulting product contains metallic copper which is readily dissolved with cupric ions in aqueous acetonitrile solution. Copper powder is recovered by thermal disproportionation. The residue contains the bulk of the iron and precious metals and may be treated by a number of methods, including direct cyanidation or melting with suitable fluxes. Melting the residue will produce a copper alloy containing the precious metals and remove the iron as a slag. The alloy can be recycled to the copper leaching stage or sent for toll refining depending on the precious metal content. Impurities from the leaching circuit are controlled by a bleed circuit which in one approach utilizes the SO, from the calciner to produce Chevreul's salt and separates copper from the soluble cobalt and nickel. Alternatively, the bleed may be directed back to the main refinery copper boil stage or oxydrolysis stage.

In a previous paper the writer dealt -with the jasper bar formations and their relationship to the structural geology of older pre-Cambrian rocks in the goldfields districts of Western Australia (24). He has pointed out in this ahd other papers that jasper bars, or banded iron formations, banded hematite or ,magnetite quartzites, jaspilites and related banded ferruginous or non-ferruginous cherts, occur in abundan'ce in the Older Greenstone Series of Western Australia (22), (24), (26). They are considered to represent special forms of banded ferruginous sediments, and are usually fpund in the field interbedded with more or less metamorphosed pasaltic 01' andesitic lavas and tuffs, now amphibolites, together with occasional thin bands of normal pelitic sediments, which go to make up a large proportion of the Older Greenstones in thfs State (26).Great thicknesses of fiat-bedded ]:landed ferruginous cherts are also found associated with cherty' carbonate rocks; quartzites, shales and thin-bedded dolomite whicIi constit'ute the Nullagine (Pl'oterozoic) system in the northwest of Western Australia. In the Hamersley Range district these banded ferruginous chert beds are the hosts of important deposits of blue amphibole asbestos.In the paper mentioned above brief reference was> made to the importance, of geological structure in relation to economic geology, particularly in the goldfields regions of Western Australia, and it was shown that jasper bars may have an important role in the study of 'the structural geology of many of these regions. Of possibly more immediate economic importance is the part that these rocks play, both directly and indirectly, as host rocks for mineral deposits-the chief of Which are gold, iron ores, blue asbestos, and manganese ores. The blue asbestos bearing banded iron formations mentioned above are confined to the younger pre-Cambrian Nullagine formations. They have been described in detail elsewhere (23). In this paper it is proposed to discuss the economic geology of the jasper bars found in the older pre-Cambrian series.The jasper 'bars have in themselves little or no intrinsic value except perhaps some of the more highly coloured and banded varieties which may be utilised for ornamental and decorative purposes. Probably the best known of such varieties is the so-called "marble bar;" a belt of, strikingly coloured banded chert occurring just south and west of the famous town of that name (see Fig. 1t). This consists of a hard, very fine, even-grained rock with alternate individual stripes varying from the thickness of a sheet of paper up to an inch or more in width, and ranging in colour from clear white to yellow, from various shades of pink to brilliant...

The principal source of funding the working capital requirements of gold miners has traditionally been equity. However in the 1980s, with a substantial increase in activity in the exploration for, and the production of, gold the traditional sources of equity finance became no longer sufficient to meet demand. With the often high cost of raising equity, the need for developing alternative financing structures became critical, especially since the stockmarket crash of 1987 which at least until recently, adversely affected the amount of equity capital available for investment in mining.

The following note on the mineral association in the ores of the Tennant Creek Goldfield, Northern Territory, is largely based on Mineragraphic Reports Nos. 49, 89, 117 and 193 of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. These reports are the results of the examinations of auriferous specimens from a number of mines of the goldfield and are now supplemented by the examination of further specimens from Mt. Samuel forwarded by Mr. V. G. Martin.The Tennant Creek Goldfield lies in the central portion of the Northern Territory, about Lat. 190 35', Long. 1340 15', on the Overland Telegraph Line and about 369 miles north of Alice Springs. It comprise an area extending about 50 miles east and west, by 30 miles north and south.The geology of the goldfield has been described by Woolnough. (2)The rocks of the area are of pre-Cambrian age, and consist of talcose, chloritic, micaceous and siliceous schists of sedimentary origin, interbedded with flows or dykes of schistose quartz porphyry, and of granites which were intruded subsequent to the regional metarporphism of the area. The rocks are moderately folded, but the beclding tends to be obscured by a pronounced east-west cleavage. The most continuous orebodies run east and west, parallel with this cleavage.Numerous lenses of hematite occur in the schists, with their long axes, parallel to the cleavage, and the gold values of the field are frequently associated with such hematite bodies. The dimensions of these hematite bodies are variable but rarely exceed a length of 300 ft., with an average thickness between 10 and 30 ft.; the original vertical dimensions are thought to be comparable with their length. The lenses tend to occur in groups when they are arranged en echelon both horizontally and in depth; and erosion has exposed individual lenses to different degrees, ranging from incipient exposure to complete removal. The existence of unexposed hematite lenses at depth has been proved by geophysical surveys, coupled with drilling tests. (3)A few of the bodies are pipe-like. Many are surrounded by a casing of brecciated rock, composed of fragments of hematite and shattered country rock, and presumably caused by subsequent earth movements which crushed the country rock against the resistant hematite bodies. In the early days of the field most of the important gold occurences were found within these crushed zones, or, to a less extent, within the hematite bodies themselves.These occurrences appeared to be associated only with those hematite lenses which were intersected by quartz veins or other lines of weakness, of later origin than the crushing. Bacterial Leaching of Complex Polymetallic Sulfide Ore The work described here concerned the study on bacterial leaching of complex sulfide minerals and polymetallic ores operated in shaken flasks and small-scale columns. The bioleaching of jamesonite was not accessible. The iron extraction in pyrrhotite leaching reached 98.2 per cent after 23 days. After 26 days, the zinc extraction of marmatite reached 92.3 per cent while the iron extraction only reached 13.6 per cent. The pulp density had effect on the metal extraction of pyrrhppite and marmatite. For complex polymetallic sulfide ores, after 10 days in shaken flasks, 97.1 per cent zinc extraction was achieved. While after 60 days in small-scale column, the zinc extraction only proceeded to 7.8 per cent; By SEM and EDXA of experimental samples and their leaching residuum, the bioleaching mechanism was discussed.

Iron ore is AustraliaÆs largest commodity export and is vitally important to AustraliaÆs current and future prosperity. However, while major expansions are currently in progress to satisfy demand, the industry is also undergoing major transformations. Reserves of traditional high-grade Brockman ores that have underpinned the Australian iron ore industry since its inception are slowly being depleted and alternative ore types such as Marra Mamba bedded iron deposits, Yandi and Pannawonica channel iron deposits and magnetite deposits are now being developed. However, the impurity levels in some of these alternative ores are higher and they require blending and/or upgrading as well as an advanced knowledge of their downstream processing characteristics to facilitate cost-effective utilisation by overseas customers. The research challenge is to use advanced techniques for mineral exploration, ore characterisation, mineral beneficiation, agglomeration and sustainable processing to identify and develop innovative and breakthrough options for locating, unlocking and enhancing the value of AustraliaÆs iron ore resources. Furthermore, to sustain the steel industry and hence secure the demand for iron ore, there is a growing need to enhance the environmental and business performance of the industry through reductions in wastes and emissions. Therefore, cost-effective breakthrough and enabling technologies that massively cut waste generation, CO2 emissions and water consumption are also being developed. These include the use of renewable fuels and reductants, waste heat recovery and conversion of by-product slag into a saleable substitute for Portland cement. The need to continue the development of the Ensham mine has led to blast up to 75 m to the Eastern side of a water dam in the vicinity of Ramp 23. The water dam wall is exposed to blasting over a distance of approximately 500 m. The first decision was to determine that the existing rock pillar between the Eastern side of the water dam and the blasting operations may not be less than 75 m in order to minimise the damage that the blast could generate to the dam wall. It was also necessary to define blasting practices to minimising the blast damage to the rock properties of the dam wall and to avoid adverse effects from vibration and gases generated by the detonation on structures.For this purpose analytical designs and test blasts were conducted to assess the ground vibration attenuation within the rock pillar. From this analysis, it was concluded that the best practice to reduce the rock damage was to create a zone of fractured rock adjacent to the side of each production blast. This fractured zone would create an effective filter both for vibration and for gases generated by the blast. This zone of fractured rock was created by firing two buffer rows. In terms of pattern size and powder factor the two buffer rows were designed just to generate a fractured rock zone. To date approximately 500 m have been excavated along the eastern wall of the water dam where each production blast was preceded by a Trim blast. This practice has given good results with regard to minimising the damage generated by production blasting.
